We reported that meat chicks have either a greater capability to acclimatize to novel environments, or a blunted hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal response to novel environments compared with layer chicks in a commercial base. The present study compared the differences in behavior and plasma corticosterone concentrations under isolation‐induced stress between neonatal meat and layer Nagoya chicks which had been separated from the same population. Both types of neonatal chicks reared in groups were individually separated and their spontaneous activity and distress‐induced vocalizations were monitored for 10 min. The responses of the two types were remarkably different, with the meat chicks being less active than the layer chicks. Distress‐induced vocalizations were fewer in the meat than in the layer chicks. The meat chicks spent more time in a sleeping posture during isolation‐induced stress. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured at the end of the test tended to be higher in the layer chicks than in meat ones, but not significantly. In conclusion, the selection of Nagoya chickens for meat and layer may have trends similar to those observed in commercial chickens in relation to stress susceptibility.  相似文献

Two 21-d trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of heating time and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) on the nutritional value of full-fat soybeans for chicks. In Trial 1, four pen-replicates of eight chicks each were fed corn-based diets (19% CP; 3,167 kcal of ME/kg) containing either 44% CP soybean meal or full-fat soybeans. The soybeans either were unheated or were autoclaved at 121 degrees C for 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, or 90 min. Soybean oil was added to the soybean meal diet to make it isoenergetic with the soybean diets. Trypsin inhibitor, urease activity, and the solubility of protein in the soybeans decreased as heating time increased. Weight gain increased and feed:gain and pancreas weights decreased quadratically (P less than .01) with heating time. Rate and efficiency of gain were maximized when the soybeans were heated for 40 min; further heating for 60 or 90 min reduced performance. In Trial 2, SMBS was added at levels of 0, 1, or 2% to full-fat, unheated soybeans or to soybeans before autoclaving at 121 degrees C for 10, 20, or 40 min. Four pen-replicates of seven chicks each were fed corn-soybean diets (19% CP; 3,144 kcal of ME/kg) with 12 treatments in a factorial arrangement of heating times and SMBS levels. The rate and efficiency of chick weight gain improved linearly (P less than .01) and pancreas weights decreased linearly (P less than .01) as heating time increased. Less heating time was required to maximize performance and minimize pancreas weights when SMBS was added, resulting in a heating time x SMBS interaction (P less than .05). Under the conditions of this research, chicks fed full-fat soybeans achieved maximum performance when the soybeans were heated at 121 degrees C for 40 min, and SMBS decreased by one-half the heating time required to inactivate the trypsin inhibitors. Trypsin inhibitor activity in soybeans was more closely related to their nutritional value than was urease activity.  相似文献

Treating chicks, from 1 d or 5 weeks of age with ACTH three times weekly for 3 weeks depresses growth and causes adrenal hypertrophy at dose rates of 30 IU/kg or more, and depletion of adrenal cholesterol (greater than 10 IU/kg). 2. Treating chicks five times weekly at a dose rate of 30 IU/kg was as effective as a dose of 120 IU/kg three times weekly. 3. Plasma glucose and FFA concentrations of chicks treated thrice weekly with 120 IU ACTH/kg for 3 weeks were within the normal range. 4. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional quality of 2 varieties of Purdue high-digestible sorghum (PHD1 and PHD2) and a normal sorghum, compared with corn, in diets of pigs and broiler chicks. In Exp. 1, 12 pigs (average BW, 55 kg) fitted with ileal T-cannula were fed 4 diets containing 946 g of corn or sorghum (PHD1, PHD2, and normal) per kg in a 2-period crossover design (i.e., each pig received 2 diets over a 2-wk period with 6 pigs per dietary treatment) to determine apparent ileal or total tract digestibility of nutrients and energy. There was no difference in the ileal or total tract digestibility of DM, energy, P, Ca, or N among dietary treatments. In Exp. 2, a total of 192 broiler chicks were grouped by weight into 8 blocks of 4 cages each with 6 chicks per cage, and cages were assigned randomly to 1 of the 4 dietary treatments within each block. Chicks were fed corn-soybean meal (SBM) or sorghum-SBM diets for 21 d to determine apparent total tract retention and then switched to diets containing 935 g of the corresponding corn or 1 of the 3 sorghum varieties per kg for 7 d to determine apparent ileal digestibility and total tract retention. Apparent ileal digestibilities of DM and P, as well as energy, were not different in chicks fed diets containing 935 g of corn or 1 of the 3 sorghum varieties per kg. However, apparent total tract retention of DM, energy, and N in chicks fed corn was greater (P < 0.05) than those fed 1 of the 3 sorghum varieties. Although the apparent ME content of corn was greater than PHD1 and normal sorghum (P < 0.01), it was not different from PHD2 sorghum. There was no difference in apparent total tract retention of DM between chicks fed the corn-SBM and PHD-SBM diets, but it was greater (P < 0.05) in chicks fed the corn-SBM diet than those fed the normal sorghum-SBM diet. Apparent total tract retention of N in chicks fed the PHD1-SBM diet was lower (P < 0.05) than in those fed the corn-SBM diet but greater (P < 0.05) than in chicks fed the normal sorghum-SBM meal diet. No difference in the apparent ME content between the corn-SBM and PHD2-SBM diets was observed, but it was greater (P < 0.05) for the corn-SBM diet than the PHD1- or normal sorghum-SBM diet. Weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency were not different in chicks fed the corn-SBM or sorghum-SBM diets. Sorghum could serve as a substitute for corn in cereal grain-SBM diets for pigs and broiler chicks.  相似文献

Structural changes in bone, parathyroid, and ultimobranchial body were examined in three groups of chicks fed a vitamin D-deficient diet; one group was treated with vitamin D3 and another with 1,25(OH)2D3. Diets were fed from day of hatching until 5 weeks old, when deficient chicks were near death due to hypocalcemic tetany, loss of fat and muscle, and marked bone deformities. In deficient chicks, parathyroid mass increased linearly to 7.5 times normal at 5 weeks. Parathyroid cells were irregular and vacuolated, with few granules. 1,25(OH)2D3 had normal parathyroids until the fifth week, when parathyroid mass increased greatly. There were few differences in length of growth cartilage, but marked changes in length of metaphyses. Deficient chicks had metaphyses nearly five times longer than vitamin D3-treated chicks. Metaphyses in chicks given 1,25(OH)2D3 were twice as long as those of vitamin D-treated chicks at 5 weeks. Both osteoblasts and osteoclasts were more numerous in deficient chicks. These studies suggest that vitamin D3 is more effective than 1,25(OH)2D3 in preventing parathyroid and bone lesions of vitamin D deficiency.  相似文献

1. A study was conducted to identify the specificity of insulin-glucose interactions in newly hatched broiler chicks. 2. Plasma insulin concentrations in fed chicks at one day post-hatch were lower than those at later ages and tended to increase up to d 7, while the concentrations from 1 to 7 d of age were lower than those in chickens of 10 to 28 d of age. 3. Plasma glucose concentrations were lowered for 60 min by injection of insulin at 10 and 40 microg/kg body weight (BW) in both 1- and 21-d-old chicks, showing that the hypoglycaemic effect of exogenous insulin is of larger magnitude but shorter duration in 1-d-old chicks. 4. The decrease in plasma glucose concentration at 60 min after insulin injection (10 and 40 microg/kg BW) was larger in 1- to 7-d-old chicks than in 14- to 21-d-old chickens. 5. These results indicate that newly hatched broiler chicks are under the control of specific insulin-glucose interactions characterised by low plasma insulin concentrations with high sensitivity to insulin.  相似文献

1. Two-week-old male chicks of a light-bodied strain were fed one (1M) or two (2M) 2-h meals per day. An additional group was pair-fed (P1M) the amount consumed by the 1M group on the previous day. 2. After 21 days, final body weight of the 1M and 2M chicks attained 65% and 80%, respectively, of that of the control group fed ad libitum. The weight gain of the P1M chicks was equal to that of the 1M chicks. 3. Food consumption of chicks adapted to meals was not even throughout the feeding period. On day 16 of the experiment, the 1M birds consumed 65% of the meal during the first 30 min. P1M chicks behaved similarly to the 1M ones. The intake of the 2M chicks during each meal was exactly half of their daily consumption, despite the uneven time period between meals. 4. The time during which food remained in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) was longer under the meal feeding regimes than in the ad libitum-fed groups. 5. Although neither body composition nor metabolisable energy was affected by meal regime, food utilisation was poorer in the 1M and P1M than in the ad libitum and 2M-fed chicks.  相似文献

Thirty-three live 9-day-old broiler chicks were submitted for laboratory evaluation because of blindness. Blindness was observed in up to 1% of 25,000 birds from four different houses. All the chicks were from the same breeder source. Blindness was apparent when the chicks were 2-3 days old. Clinically, the blind chicks were smaller than their counterparts, were unable to find feed and water, and wandered aimlessly. Necropsy did not reveal any lesions. Two chicks examined clinically at 14 days of age lacked pupillary reflexes after light stimulation, and the anterior and posterior segments of the eye were normal. Microscopically, degeneration of photoreceptor cells characterized by vacuoles was evident at 9 days of age, and rosette formation of the retina, disorganization of retinal layers, synechia of the retina with mild inflammation in the choroid, and proliferation of the retinal pigment epithelial cells were evident by 15 days of age. Because the chicks came from the same breeder source and the incidence of blindness was low, a probable genetic etiology is suspected as the cause of blindness in this flock.  相似文献

The effect of the gut flora on chick growth and protein and energy utilisation at a marginal dietary energy level (calculated metabolisable energy value 11.7 MJ/kg) was determined with diets containing 227 or 293 g protein/kg. Germ-free (GF) and conventional (CV) chicks were reared for 10 d on the diets, and excreta were collected during the last 4 d. The chicks were killed and carcases and droppings were analysed for N and fat. The GF chicks grew significantly faster than the CV controls on both diets. The growth of CV chicks given the high protein diet was similar to that of GF chicks given the adequate protein diet. Protein and energy utilisation were significantly less for CV than for GF chicks on both diets. It was concluded that the energy requirement of CV chicks was greater than that of their GF counterparts, and that their poorer growth was due to utilisation of some dietary protein as an energy source.  相似文献

Limb deformities were detected in 135 out of 885 ostrich chicks, giving a prevalence of 15.3%. Tibiotarsal rotation affected 73% of the chicks with limb deformities, whereas rolled toes accounted for 36%. The right leg was more often affected than the left leg. The incidence of limb deformities was highest in 2- to 3-week-old ostrich chicks. The incidence of limb deformities was highest at the beginning of the breeding season and lowest towards the end, when it was relatively warmer. The mean serum manganese and zinc levels in deformed ostrich chicks were higher than the levels reported for normal chicks.  相似文献

A study of 10 clinical pathology values in four groups of Andean flamingo chicks (Phoenicoparrus andinus) was conducted to evaluate an artificial feeding program in Chile. Three groups were fed controlled diets (groups 2000, 2001, and 2002) with quantitative differences in their nutritional content. A fourth group of free-living Andean flamingo chicks was used as normal controls. Nutritional management techniques used in 2002 resulted in hematologic values with similar levels of total protein, globulins, albumin, cholesterol, urea, phosphorus, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine, and calcium to those obtained in free-living chicks. In addition, final weight, physical condition, and plumage in flamingo chicks of group 2002 were considered satisfactory to face local climatic conditions and nomadic activity. These results may be useful as reference values and help to improve conservation management and veterinary care of this species.  相似文献

Jackass penguins Spheniscus demersus hatch two different-sized eggs asynchronously: the second-hatched chick, being, on average, 59% of the weight of the first-hatched chick on hatching. We examined the effect of hatching order on growth rates of mass, culmen length and culmen depth by comparing: (i) growth rates of first-and second-hatched chicks, and (ii) chicks from experimentally synchronized broods to chicks from normal asynchronous broods. Only growth rates in mass showed significant variation. Within a brood, B chicks grew more slowly than A chicks. The effect of synchronizing a brood was to lower the growth rate of both chicks to that of a B chick, suggesting that equal-sized siblings feed less efficiently. Chicks hatching from larger A eggs, that had been synchronized for age and size with chiçks from B eggs, did not grow faster, indicating that chicks hatching from A and B eggs do not have intrinsically different growth rates. Single-chick nests result usually from egg infertility. Singletons showed only a non-significant trend towards faster growth in mass than offspring in two-chick broods, even though food availability in one-chick nests should be better than in two-chick nests. Overall, hatching order had more impact on growth rates of mass than did brood size or egg dimensions.  相似文献

Nine thousand commercial breeder chicks (Chankee) reared in a floor pen were exposed to restricted numbers of Eimeria tenella and E. necatrix oocysts to confer immunity. Antibody induction in these chicks was examined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with antigen prepared from E. tenella oocysts. The oocyst excretion pattern demonstrated recycled infections which continued in these chicks for greater than or equal to 22 days after exposure. Antibody levels in their sera, as determined by the mean absorbence values in ELISA, increased gradually up to 38 days post-inoculation. Mean absorbence values of sera from control chicks remained at a low level. When infected and control chicks were challenged with the two species of coccidia, the test chicks were protected against both species. The antibody level did not change for 8 days in the challenge groups, while in the control chicks, absorbence in ELISA rose significantly and the mean absorbence value was higher than that in immunized chicks. Some factors which influence the results of ELISA are considered and the applicability of this method to measuring immunity against coccidiosis in chickens is discussed.  相似文献

One-day-old broiler chicks were inoculated with volatile fatty acid producing cecal flora from adult chickens. The chicks were divided into four groups and provided 1) no lactose, 2) 2.5% lactose in water, 3) 5% lactose in feed, or 4) 10% lactose in feed, until 10 days of age. All groups were challenged at 3 days of age with 10(6) or 10(8) S. typhimurium. At 10 days, the number of Salmonella in the ceca of the chicks challenged with 10(6) Salmonella was significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) in the groups provided lactose as compared with the controls. A significant decrease (P less than 0.01) in Salmonella numbers occurred in the chicks challenged with 10(8) Salmonella and provided 10% lactose. Providing 2.5% lactose or 5% lactose failed to inhibit Salmonella growth in chicks challenged with 10(8) Salmonella. The pH of the ceca of the groups provided lactose decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) and was accompanied by significant increases (P less than 0.01) in the concentrations of bacteriostatic acetic and propionic acids. Results showed that providing dietary lactose to broiler chicks and inoculation with normal cecal flora decreased cecal pH, increased the concentrations of bacteriostatic volatile fatty acids, and inhibited Salmonella colonization.  相似文献

1. Responses of male broiler chicks and male chicks of an egg-laying stock to dietary crude protein (CP) concentrations ranging from 167 to 251 g/kg (metabolisable energy content 13 MJ/kg) were compared from 0 to 21 d of age, using 20 groups of 9 or 10 chicks (5 diets x 2 stocks x 2 replicates). 2. Average growth rate in the broilers was three times that of the layer chicks. The broilers needed at least 251 g CP/kg to maximise their liveweight gain but the layer chicks needed only about 188 g CP/kg. 3. The broiler chicks ate less than twice as much food as the layers and their maximum gain/food ratio was 0.6 compared with 0.4 for the layer chicks. These maximum efficiencies of conversion of food to liveweight were achieved in both cases with a diet containing 230 g CP/kg. 4. The efficiency of protein utilisation (above maintenance) was the same in fast- and slow-growing genotypes (about 0.47 g protein gain/g protein consumed). 5. Carcase analysis at 3 weeks of age showed that the broilers had deposited more fat than the layers and that protein content of the diet had markedly influenced fat deposition in both stocks. Fat in the whole body increased from 29 to 87 g/kg in the layer chicks and from 81 to 123 g/kg in the broilers as dietary protein was reduced from 251 to 167 g/kg. 6. The optimum protein to energy ratio of a chick starter diet will depend on the growth potential of the stock, as well as the cost of ingredients and the value of fatter or leaner carcases.  相似文献

1. To clarify the difference in behavioural activities and catecholamine metabolism between layer and broiler-type chicks two experiments were conducted. 2. In experiment 1, 1-d-old male layer and broiler chicks were placed in an open-field area and their responses were investigated for 10 min. The responses of the two strains were remarkably different, with broilers being less active than layers. Vocalisations rapidly decreased in broilers whereas those of layers remained elevated during the 10 min. 3. In experiment 2, 1-d-old chicks of both strains were killed and brain catecholamine concentrations were determined in three parts of the brain: telencephalon, optic lobe and brain stem. 4. In the whole brain, dopamine (DA) and dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were significantly higher in broilers. However, the values for norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetic acid (HVA) were similar between strains. The ratios of metabolite/precursor were also calculated: HVA/DOPAC was higher in layers, while NE/DA, E/NE and DOPAC/DA were not significantly different between strains. 5. These results suggest that behavioural activities differ greatly, while there are some differences in catecholamine metabolism between the two strains.  相似文献

Subpopulations of T-cells, B-cells, macrophages and ellipsoid-associated reticular cells (EARC) could be demonstrated by immunohistochemical staining early in the development of chicken spleen. However, the typical structures of the spleen, such as the peri-arteriolar lymphoid sheath (PALS) and the ellipsoids with their surrounding ring of macrophages, were only formed around embryonic day (ED) 20. These structures and especially the B-cell compartment, i.e., the peri-ellipsoid lymphoid sheath (PELS) gradually matured during the first week posthatch.

Therefore, we analysed at what age broiler chickens could generate a humoral response against the thymus-dependent antigen bovine serum albumin (BSA). Chickens were immunised in ovo (ED16 and ED18) and at 1, 7 and 12 days of age and subsequent BSA-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG responses were measured up to 10 days postimmunisation (DPI). No major differences were observed in the relative growth rates, while hatchability was only slightly reduced. Only in chicks immunised on 12 days of age, IgM and IgG responses were high with a normal kinetic pattern. In chicks immunised on 7 days of age, responses were just detectable, but they were absent in chicks immunised in ovo and on the day of hatching (Day 1).

In a subsequent experiment, 1-, 7- and 12-day-old chicks were BSA-immunised and Ig responses were measured for a longer period up to the age of 28 days. The IgG response of chicks immunised at 1 day of age was lower and occurred later (from 28 DPI) than the response of chicks immunised at 7 and 14 days of age (from 14 DPI). It was not increased by a booster immunisation on 29 days of age, in contrast to the response of chicks immunised at 7 and 14 days of age. These findings indicate that vaccination at 1 day of age does not activate the B-cell response resulting in antibody production and support the idea that the immune function of the late embryonic and neonatal chickens is not entirely developed due to the incomplete structural organisation of their secondary immune organs.  相似文献

1. Previous studies have shown that a bunch of string is a particularly attractive pecking stimulus for chicks and adult laying hens. Because movement is thought to be an important attribute of enrichment objects, this study determined whether occasional movement would affect the attractiveness of this device. 2. In experiment 1 the responses of pair-housed chicks to string were compared when devices in adjacent cages were either linked (so that pecking or pulling at the string in one cage moved the adjoining one) or not (separate). In experiment 2 the devices in half the cages were jigged remotely by the experimenter whereas the others remained static. In both cases, the string devices were introduced into the cages for 10 min on each of 5 consecutive days. 3. No treatment effects were apparent in experiment 1 when pooled data was analysed but comparison of responses on days 1 and 5 revealed that only the chicks presented with non-linked devices showed increased interest with repeated exposure. 4. Chicks given static devices in experiment 2 pecked sooner, more often and longer at them than did those exposed to similar ones that were jigged regularly by the experimenter. Jigged devices attracted slightly more pecking with repeated exposure, which may have reflected familiarity-induced fear-reduction, but chick responses showed no apparent changes from day 2 onwards. Conversely, rather than showing habituation, the chicks pecked progressively more at the static devices with repeated presentation. 5. The present results show that chicks pecked readily at bunches of white string, thus confirming its attractive properties but that static devices were more attractive than those incorporating occasional movement. These and previous findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the development of effective environmental enrichment.  相似文献

1. Zinc, iron and copper interactions were examined in chicks (New Hampshire X Single Comb White Leghorn) grown individually in stainless steel cages and fed on purified diets with three concentrations of zinc: control (37 mg Zn/kg), moderate (100 mg Zn/kg) and excess (2000 mg Zn/kg) in three studies. 2. Chicks given either moderate or excess zinc excreted more than twice as much 65Zn from a test diet as those fed on the control diet. Thus chicks given the moderate amount of zinc had concentrations of zinc in tissues similar to those of controls but chicks given excess zinc accumulated zinc in their tissues. 3. The specific activity of 65Zn in the tissues, especially in the bursa of Fabricius, of chicks given excess zinc was not reduced as much as would be predicted. Thus, ingestion of excess zinc appeared to reduce tissue turnover of 65Zn, especially in the bursa. However, humoral immune responses, as measured by antibody titres to sheep red blood cells, were not affected. 4. Chicks given excess zinc or pair-fed on the control diet retained less 59Fe from a test diet than chicks given control or moderate concentrations of zinc ad libitum. The iron concentrations in tibiae of chicks given excess zinc were depressed.  相似文献
