Background: Serum fructosamine (SF) concentrations depend on plasma glucose concentrations and are used to evaluate glycemic control in animals with diabetes mellitus (DM). Despite the strong association between obesity and DM, the effects of body weight (BW) and body condition on SF concentrations in clinically healthy cats have not been reported. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of BW, body condition score (BCS), sex, and age on SF concentrations in healthy cats. Methods: BW, BCS, and SF concentrations were determined in 84 clinically healthy client‐owned cats (50 neutered males, 33 spayed females, and 1 intact female) of known age. The cats were enrolled prospectively in the study. Results: Mean BW, median BCS, and mean SF concentrations for the 84 cats were 5.4 kg, 5/9, and 268.7±45.5 μmol/L (range 197–399), respectively. BW was weakly but significantly correlated with SF (r=.26; P=.02), whereas BCS was not. Cats weighing >5.4 kg and cats with BCS>5/9 had higher mean SF concentrations compared with cats weighing <5.4 kg and cats with BCS <5/9, respectively. Cats categorized as normal weight to obese by BW (BW≥4.0 kg) had higher mean SF concentrations compared with cats categorized as lean (BW<4.0 kg). For domestic shorthair cats, the same was true for BCS: cats with BCS≥4/9 had higher mean fructosamine concentrations than those with BCS<4/9. Male cats had significantly higher mean SF concentrations compared with female cats (285.1±45.3 vs 244.5±33.9 μmol/L, P<.001). Age did not affect mean SF concentrations. Conclusions: BW is positively correlated with SF concentration, and lean cats have lower SF concentrations than normal and obese cats. In contrast to previous reports, mean SF concentrations were higher in male cats than in female cats, even when males and females were matched based on BW, BCS, and age.  相似文献

Iodine, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) are required for normal fetal growth, maturation, and neonatal survival. There is a lack of robust information on iodine levels found in colostrum, milk, and serum of mares and foals after a healthy pregnancy. Our objective was to characterize colostrum, milk, and serum iodine levels in healthy postpartum mares and foals (n = 10) and explore relationships with thyroid hormone concentrations. Colostrum, milk, and jugular blood samples from draft breed mares and foals with an estimated average iodine daily intake of 39 mg per mare during pregnancy were obtained at Day 0 (foaling date) and/or 10 days later. Parameters studied were (1) mare basal concentrations of serum: TT3, TT4, and iodine; (2) iodine in colostrum at Day 0 and milk iodine (Day 10); and (3) foal basal: TT3, TT4, and serum iodine (Days 0 and 10). Median ± median error colostrum iodine levels (165 ± 15.1 μg/L) were higher than milk (48 ± 5.6 μg/L; P = .007) levels. Median ± median error foal serum iodine (268.5 ± 7.6 μg/L), TT4 (1,225 ± 47.8 nmol/L), and TT3 (14.2 ± 1.1 nmol/L) at foaling date were higher than at 10 days (serum iodine: 70 ± 3.6 μg/L; TT4: 69.6. ± 20.4 nmol/L; and TT3: 5.4 ± 0.3 nmol/L). In conclusion, equine mammary tissue concentrates iodine beyond plasma levels, making colostrum and milk a significant source of iodine. Foal serum iodine levels are high in the neonatal period and are positively correlated with TT4, which is important for neonatal adaptation.  相似文献

A total of 517 stray cats at an RSPCA veterinary hospital were tested for feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), feline coronavirus (FCoV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). The prevalence of FeLV was 3.5 per cent in all the cats, 1.4 per cent in healthy cats and 6.9 per cent in sick cats. FeLV positivity was associated only with disease of non-traumatic origin. Antibodies to FCoV were present in 22.4 per cent of the cats, and their prevalence was significantly higher in cats over two years old and in feral/semiferal cats. The prevalence of antibodies to FIV was 10.4 per cent in all the cats, 4.9 per cent in healthy cats and 16.7 per cent in sick cats. The prevalence of FIV antibodies was significantly higher in entire males and neutered males than in females, in cats over two years old compared with younger cats, and in cats suffering disease of non-traumatic origin rather than in healthy cats or cats suffering only from trauma. Sex, age and health status were each independently highly associated with FIV antibodies.  相似文献

A new automated affinity chromatographic method for determining glycated haemoglobin (GHb) in dogs and cats was tested. The method appeared to be practical, quick and accurate. The reference range, calculated on the basis of 50 healthy dogs and 43 healthy cats, lay between 2·4 and 3·4 per cent in dogs and 2·0 and 2·9 per cent in cats. Concentrations were not influenced by age or gender. GHb levels obtained for 21 dogs and 18 cats with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus were significantly higher than those of the control animals, ranging from 4·5 to 8·6 per cent (median 6·1) in dogs and from 2·7 to 6·0 per cent (median 3.8 per cent) in cats. The GHb levels in 31 normoglycaemic dogs with anaemia ranged from 2·3 to 4·3 per cent (median 3·3 per cent), and those of 22 normogiycaemic cats with anaemia from 2·6 to 3·9 per cent (median 3·2 per cent); both sets of levels were significantly elevated compared to control group values. GHb concentrations in animals with polycythaemia, azotaemia or liver disease showed no significant deviations from the control group; in individual cases they were slightly elevated compared to the reference range. The automated measuring method employed can be used to determine GHb in dogs and cats. Anaemic animals should generally be excluded from the GHb determination.  相似文献

The efficacy and safety of carbimazole (CBZ) was studied in a series of 45 hyperthyroid cats. CBZ was used before surgical thyroidectomy in 34 cats, at a dose of 5 mg administered orally every eight hours. Biochemical euthyroidism, as assessed by a decrease in serum total thyroxine (T4) concentrations into the reference range, was achieved in 31 cats (91 per cent) within a mean (± SD) of 5–7 (± 2–9) days (range, three to 15 days). Clinical evidence of euthyroidism tended to lag behind biochemical evidence but was usually apparent after 14 days. Continuing therapy tended to decrease serum total T4 but not serum total triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations below the reference range but clinical evidence of hypothyroidism was not apparent. In five additional cats, 5 mg CBZ was administered three times between 08.00 and 20.00 hours. Euthyroidism was achieved in only one cat after 14 days, emphasising the need for eight hourly dosing. Clinically observable side effects developed in five cats (13 per cent), two to three weeks after commencing therapy and included vomiting (n y 2) and vomiting and anorexia (n = 3). In three cases withdrawal of CBZ was required. Mild and transient haematological abnormalities developed in two cats (one case each of lymphocytosis and leucopenia). There were significant decreases in serum concentrations of alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase in those cats achieving euthyroidism (P < 0–001 in each case) but not in those that remained hyperthyroid despite CBZ therapy (P ± 0–05 in each case). CBZ was used as the sole therapy for the condition in eight cats for between four and 65 weeks. A consistent dosage of 5 mg CBZ administered twice daily was necessary to maintain euthyroidism. Adverse reactions were not noted. Chronic medical management tended to depress serum total T4 concentrations below the reference range. Corresponding serum total T3 concentrations remained within the reference range on 15 (88 per cent) of 17 occasions and may explain why the animals appeared clinically euthyroid. CBZ appears to be a safe and effective drug both in the short and long term management of feline hyperthyroidism and can be recommended as the current drug of choice in the UK.  相似文献

The efficacy of radioactive iodine (131I) administration was studied in a series of 50 hyperthy-roid cats. The dose administered to each cat was based on the clinical severity of the thyrotoxicosis, the serum total thyroxine (TJ concentration and the size of the goitre estimated by palpation. The activity ranged from 80 to 200 MBq (mean ± SD, 143 ± 24 MBq}. The 131I was injected intravenously in 27 cases and subcutaneously in 23 cases. Each cat was hospitalised for 30 days after the injection. Regardless of the route of injection, none of the cats exhibited any side effects after therapy and all tolerated the hospitalisation period well. There was a significant (P<0.001) decrease in the serum total T4 concentration (reference range, 10.4 to 42.0 nmol/litre) from a mean ± SD of 181.3 ± 111.4 nmol/litre (range, 43.8 to 575.6 nmol/litre) to a mean ± SD of 19.0 ± 29.6 nmol/litre (range, 2.0 to 175.7 nmol/litre) 30 days following the injection of the radioisotope. Five cats remained hyperthyroid, although in each case the serum total T4 concentrations had decreased from pre-treatment values. Two of the cats subsequently became euthyroid within three and five months of therapy, respectively, two were lost to adequate follow-up and the remaining cat was successfully retreated four months later. Before treatment, four of these cases had high scores based on the three criteria used for dose estimation. Serum total T4 concentrations below the reference range developed after treatment in many cases, but were often transient. Clinical evidence of hypothyroidism was not apparent in any cat. Recurrence of hyperthyroidism has not occurred in follow-up periods of up to 32 months. There was no difference in the outcome between the cats injected intravenously or subcutaneously and the latter was considered to be safer and simpler. The administration of an approximated dose of 131I proved to be an effective treatment for hyperthyroidism in 47 (94.0 per cent) of the cats and obviated the need for sophisticated nuclear computer facilities. There may be a lag period in some cases before euthy-roidism is achieved and this should be considered before the administration of a second dose. 131I can be administered subcutaneously without untoward effects.  相似文献

O bjective : Evaluation of efficacy and safety of a novel controlled-release formulation of carbimazole in feline hyperthyroidism.
M ethods : A multicentre, self-controlled study in 44 client-owned cats with history and clinical signs of hyperthyroidism, and total thyroxine concentration greater than or equal to 50 nmol/l. Treatment was started at 15 mg once daily, response assessed after 10 days, and 3, 5, 8, 26 and 53 weeks and dose adjusted as required.
R esults : The median dose of carbimazole was 10 mg (range 10 to 15 mg) and 15 mg (5 to 25 mg) once daily after 3 and 53 weeks, respectively. Median total thyroxine concentration dropped significantly from 118 nmol/l (50 to 320 nmol/l) at presentation to 33 nmol/l (n=40) after 10 days, 31 nmol/l (n=34) at 3 weeks and 21 nmol/l (n=18) at 53 weeks. Clinical signs improved or resolved in almost all cats within three weeks after starting treatment. Twenty-one adverse reactions possibly (20) or probably (1) related to treatment were reported. During treatment, increased blood urea nitrogen concentration was observed in 25 per cent of the cats, eosinophilia in 20 per cent and lymphopenia in 16 per cent, while liver enzymes tended to improve.
C linical S ignificance : Once daily administration of controlled-release carbimazole tablets was effective and had expected tolerance in hyperthyroid cats during short- and long-term treatment.  相似文献

Changes in total thyroxine (T4), free T4 and total tri-iodothyronine (T3) were measured in 13 cats after the intravenous injection of varying doses of thyrotrophin stimulating hormone (TSH) (0–5 U/cat n = 6; 1 U/cat n = 8; 1 U/kg bodyweight, n = 7) or thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) (100 ug/cat, n = 10). All three doses of TSH resulted in a significant (P < 0–05) rise in T4, free T4 and T3 levels, with the mean peak in hormone concentrations occurring six to eight hours after injection. The three doses of TSH all appeared to produce maximal stimulation of thyroid hormone secretion. The mean percentage increase in hormone concentrations at seven hours following the three doses of TSH ranged from 167 to 198 per cent for T4, 240 to 365 per cent for free T4, and 73 to 116 per cent for T3. Following administration of TRH there was also a significant (P < 0–05) rise in T4, and free T4. The mean peak in T4 and free T4 levels occurred at four hours, and mean increases in hormone levels at this time were 92 per cent for T4, and 198 per cent for free T4. The administration of TRH produced little change in T3 levels. TSH administration resulted in a significantly higher (P < 0–05) percentage peak increase in T4, free T4 and T3 levels at all three dosages than did TRH.  相似文献

Objective

To describe normative ocular surface and aqueous tear testing data for cats of various cephalic conformation.

Animals studied

Fifty-three healthy adult cats (11 British Shorthair, 11 Burmese, 10 Devon Rex, 10 Scottish Fold, and 11 Sphynx).

Procedures

Blink rate, corneal tactile sensation (CTS), and Schirmer tear test with or without topical anesthesia (STT-1, STT-2) and with nasolacrimal stimulation (NL-STT1, NL-STT2) were assessed. Palpebral fissure length (PFL) and skull morphology were measured, and cephalic index (CI) and craniofacial ratio (CFR) calculated.

Results

Mean ± SD test results were as follows: blink rate (5.0 ± 2.3 blinks/min), CTS (3.2 ± 0.7 cm), STT-1 (11.2 ± 4.3 mm/min), STT-2 (6.7 ± 3.6 mm/min), NL-STT1 (13.4 ± 5.7 mm/min), NL-STT2 (13.5 ± 5.2 mm/min), and PFL (2.0 ± 0.2 cm). Corneal sensitivity did not differ significantly among breeds (p = .152) but was negatively correlated with body weight (r = −.32, p = .019). STT-1 significantly differed among breeds (p < .001) and was lowest in Sphynx cats (8.7 ± 4.3 mm/min). A positive correlation was detected between STT-1 values at 30 and 60 s (r = .98; p < .001). The nasolacrimal reflex significantly increased STT in anesthetized and unanesthetized eyes (approximately +100% and +20%, respectively; p ≤ .002). STT-1 tended to be higher in intact versus neutered cats (p = .062). Age did not impact any test result (p ≥ .085).

Conclusions

Normative data described here serve as a baseline for future studies assessing ocular surface disease in multiple feline breeds. Unlike dogs, brachycephalic cats did not have lower CTS or STT-1 than non-brachycephalic cats.  相似文献

A five-year cohort study was conducted on bitches chosen by a sample of 233 randomly selected practising veterinary surgeons in the UK, to estimate the incidence of acquired urinary incontinence (AUI) in neutered and entire animals, and to investigate possible risk factors associated with neutering practices. Information was collected using questionnaires, and data on 809 bitches, of which 22 developed AUI, were obtained. The estimated incidence rates in neutered and entire animals were 0·0174 and 0·0022 per animal-year, respectively (95 per cent confidence intervals: 0·0110, 0·0275 and 0·0009, 0·0058, respectively). The relative risk, neutered vs entire, was 7·8 (95 per cent confidence interval: 2·6, 31·5). The attributable proportionexposed and population attributable proportion were 87·1 per cent and 63·1 per cent (95 per cent confidence intervals: 61·9 per cent, 95·6 per cent, and 28·3 per cent, 88·5 per cent, respectively). An increased risk, significant at the conventional 5 per cent level, was not demonstrated in animals neutered before, vs after, first heat (relative risk: 3·9, 95 per cent confidence interval: 0·8, 10·4), although the result was significant at the 10 per cent level. Removal of the cervix was not shown to be a risk factor in neutered dogs.  相似文献

The effects of ovariohysterectomy on bodyweight, composition and condition score were evaluated in 49 cats that were fed ad libitum and 11 cats that had their food allowances controlled with the aim of maintaining a stable bodyweight. In cats fed ad libitum, bodyweight increased by an average of 31 per cent in the 12 months following ovariohysterectomy compared with 3.1 per cent over the 12 months before surgery, and this was largely due to increased body fat content. There was no difference in weight gain between cats fed dry or canned foods, but weight gain was inversely related to age and bodyweight at the time of neutering. Mean bodyweight increased by 7.5 per cent in the controlled feeding group, compared with 3.6 per cent over the 12 months before surgery, and individual bodyweights were maintained to within 10 per cent of pre-neutering values in nine cats. The other two cats experienced substantial weight gain (+20 per cent and +36 per cent), despite being fed only 40 kcal/kg/day. There were no significant changes in body composition of cats with controlled dietary allowances and their condition scores were significantly lower than those of cats fed ad libitum. The results confirm a link between ovariohysterectomy and the development of obesity in cats with free access to food, and indicate that substantial reductions in energy intake are required to prevent weight gain in such cats.  相似文献

T-cell subsets were studied by flow cytometry in 58 feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)-positive cats with naturally acquired FeLV infection to determine whether the changes in CD4+ or CD8+ T cell populations differed from those observed in 55 feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)-positive cats with naturally acquired FIV infection. The sole criterion for inclusion into the study was seropositivity. Mean (SD) CD4+ T cell values of FeLV positive cats were decreased to 31·1 (8·0) per cent and their CD8+ T cell values were increased to 22·8 (6·3) per cent in comparison with uninfected control cats (37·9 [9·5] per cent CD4+; 15·2 [6·3] per cent CD8+). The CD4+/CD8+ ratio was reduced to 1·5 (0·7), compared with 3·0 (1·5) in 39 FeLv- and FIV-negative control cats. Differences from control values were significant, but there was no significant difference between CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes of FeLV- versus FIV-infected cats. These findings indicate that FeLv and FIV have similar effects on T lymphocyte subsets. Both retrovirus infections can induce immunodeficiency, both viruses infect a broad range of lymphohaemopoietic cells, despite having different primary target cells, and can induce the killing of lymphocytic cells in vitro. It is concluded that a decreased CD4+/CD8+ ratio is not restricted to FIV infections but may also occur in FeLv infection.  相似文献

A prospective study was carried out using a combination of propranolol and potassium iodate to assess whether there were beneficial effects in preparing hyperthyroid cats for surgical thyroidectomy. Group A (n = 11) received propranolol from days 1 to 10, followed by propranolol and potassium iodate from days 11 to 20; group B (n = 10) received the reverse regimen. Blood samples were taken daily for subsequent determination of serum total L-thyroxine (TT4), L-triiodothyronine (TT3) and reverse T3 (rT3) concentrations. The signs of hyperthyroidism improved in all cats over the treatment period. At surgery, 36 per cent of the cats in group A had reference range serum TT4 concentrations, while 89 per cent with initially elevated TT3 concentrations had reference range concentrations. In group B, 10 per cent of the cats had reference range TT4 concentrations, while 75 per cent with initially elevated TT3 concentrations had reference range concentrations. The drug regimen used in group A was better tolerated and more effective and offers an alternative before thyroidectomy in cats that cannot tolerate carbimazole.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical, radiographic, and histologic abnormalities in adult cats > 1 year old with spontaneous (ie, nontraumatic) femoral capital physeal fractures. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 26 cats. PROCEDURE: Medical records of cats > 1 year old with femoral capital physeal fractures and no history of trauma were examined. RESULTS: Mean +/- SD age of the cats was 22.5 +/- 6.5 months. Twenty-five cats were neutered males. Mean weight of the cats was significantly greater than mean weight of a group of age- and sex-matched control cats. Of 16 cats for which age at the time of neutering was known, 14 had been neutered before 6 months of age. Nine cats had bilateral fractures. Severity of femoral neck osteolysis and sclerosis increased with increased duration of clinical signs. The contralateral femoral capital physis, distal femoral physes, and proximal tibial physes were radiographically open in 13 of 18,19 of 24, and 24 of 24 cats, respectively. Histologically, the epiphysis contained normal articular cartilage and bone, but attached growth plate cartilage lacked the normal columnar arrangement of chondrocytes. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that adult cats with spontaneous femoral capital physeal fractures were most likely to be heavier, neutered males with delayed physeal closure.  相似文献

A questionnaire concerning the coat colour and sex of cats being vaccinated or neutered was sent to 2585 veterinary practices; 393 (15.2 per cent) were returned and information was obtained about 9816 cats. Of 4598 males, 20 were recorded as tortoiseshell (0.43 per cent). The frequency of the orange gene was 19.7 per cent assuming that male tortoiseshell cats had two X chromosomes. The chromosome complement and/or gonadal histology of 14 male tortoiseshell cats is described. Cytogenetic analysis of 11 animals revealed six with a 38,XX/38,XY complement, two with 39,XXY, two with 38,XX, and one with a 38,XY complement.  相似文献

Between March 2000 and February 2001, six veterinary practices in Cambridgeshire collected data on 117 owned cats which they had examined after a road accident. For one week every month during the same year, the practices distributed questionnaires to the owners of cats which had been examined for reasons other than a road accident, and the data from these cats were checked to ensure that they were representative of the practice records, which were compared with a survey of the owned cat population for age and sex. From this population, the cats that were allowed outdoors and had never been in a road accident were chosen as controls, and compared with the cats that had been in a road accident for age, sex, pedigree status and coat colour. The cats that had been in a road accident differed from the control population with respect to age, sex and pedigree status; for every one-year increase in age, the odds of a road accident decreased by 16 per cent; the odds for males (entire and neutered) being in a road accident were 1.9 times the odds for females (entire and neutered), and the odds for pedigree cats were 0.29 those for non-pedigree cats.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo evaluate the sedative and antinociceptive effects of combinations of dexmedetomidine and buprenorphine in cats.Study designExperimental randomized study.AnimalsTwelve purpose-bred neutered domestic short-hair cats (4 male and 8 female) weighing 4.6 kg (range 3.7–5.5 kg) aged from 2 to 5 years.MethodsSix cats per group were administered buprenorphine (B) at 10 (B10) or 20 μg kg?1 (B20) or dexmedetomidine (D) at 20 (D20) or 40 μg kg?1 (D40) or a combination of B10/D20. A feline thermal nociceptive threshold testing device was used to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of the drugs before and up to 24 hours after drug treatment. Sedation was scored using a 100 mm visual analogue scale (VAS).ResultsThermal thresholds increased significantly after administration of all but D20. Area under the curve (AUC, hours °C) for the first 6 hours (mean ± SD) for B20 (281 ± 17.8) was significantly greater than B10 (260 ± 11.4), D20 (250 ± 7.9) and D40 (255 ± 11.4). The AUC for B10/D20 (273 ± 12.2) was significantly greater than D20 but not the other treatments. No sedation was seen after administration of B10 or B20 and maximal sedation was seen for all animals in the D40 and B10/D20 groups and most animals in the D20 group.ConclusionsD20 alone had the smallest analgesic effect; B10 alone provided no sedation but their combination gave good sedation with analgesia comparable with B20.Clinical relevanceThis combination could be a useful multimodal sedative/analgesic regimen in cats.  相似文献

The clinical case records of 44 cats with distal aortic thromboembolism were reviewed. These detailed 49 separate episodes of thromboembolism. Of the 44 cats, 33 (75%) were neutered males, and 43 (98%) were domestic shorthairs. The mean age was 8.7 years (age range 2-16 years). Evidence of pre-existing heart disease had been noted in 23% of cases. Heart failure was a concurrent diagnosis in 51% of episodes and 36% of these cases survived their thromboembolic episodes. Overall, cats survived 39% of the episodes. Cats died during 28% of the episodes, while 33% of the episodes resulted in the cats being euthanased. The median survival time was 6 months. Seventeen per cent of cats on prophylactic aspirin therapy experienced an episode of re-embolisation. Forty-three per cent of episodes occurred in the spring.  相似文献

Practical management of obesity in dogs and cats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Obesity is the most common form of malnutrition encountered in small animal practice in the western world. In a survey of cats presented to the author's clinic, 40 per cent were overweight or obese; the incidence of obesity was highlighted in neutered cats, those that were kept indoors and those over 36 months of age. A number of clinical conditions of dogs and cats can be associated with obesity, therefore its prevention and control represents an important challenge for the small animal veterinarian and its success is largely dependent on effective client education. Treatment of obesity involves a suitable diet formulation and continual patient monitoring to maintain the owner's enthusiasm and cooperation. Commercial low calorie diets provide an effective and convenient means of weight loss in obese dogs and cats.  相似文献

The aim of the present study in cats was to investigate the potential effects of a calcium carbonate and chitosan supplement on blood parameters in aged cats with moderate chronic renal failure and on the mineral balance in adult healthy cats. For the trials, 10 neutered cats 2-4 years of age were fed for 21 days and six neutered cats (2 male and 4 female), 14 years of age, with elevated urea and phosphorus level in the plasma were fed for 35 days with a supplement. The apparent digestibility of phosphorus was (p < 0.05) reduced in the treatment period. Plasma urea inorganic phosphate decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the old cats after 35 days of treatment. The treatment had a significant effect on the phosphorus, gross energy, dry matter, crude ash, crude fiber and crude protein digestibility in adult healthy cats. The practical implication could be an alternative treatment option for cats refusing to ingest veterinary renal diets.  相似文献
