OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pulmonary and cardiovascular effects of a recruitment maneuver (RM) combined with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) during total intravenous anesthesia in ponies. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult Shetland ponies. PROCEDURE: After premedication with detomidine (10 microg/kg, IV), anesthesia was induced with climazolam (0.06 mg/kg, IV) and ketamine (2.2 mg/kg, IV) and maintained with a constant rate infusion of detomidine (0.024 mg/kg/h), climazolam (0.036 mg/kg/h), and ketamine (2.4 mg/kg/h). The RM was preceded by an incremental PEEP titration and followed by a decremental PEEP titration, both at a constant airway pressure difference (deltaP) of 20 cm H2O. The RM consisted of a stepwise increase in deltaP by 25, 30, and 35 cm H2O obtained by increasing peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) to 45, 50, and 55 cm H2O, while maintaining PEEP at 20 cm H2O. Hemodynamic and pulmonary variables were analyzed at every step of the PEEP titration-RM. RESULTS: During the PEEP titration-RM, there was a significant increase in PaO 2 (+12%), dynamic compliance (+ 62%), and heart rate (+17%) and a decrease in shunt (-19%) and mean arterial blood pressure (-21%) was recorded. Cardiac output remained stable. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although baseline oxygenation was high, Pa(O2) and dynamic compliance further increased during the RM. Despite the use of high PIP and PEEP and a high tidal volume, limited cardiovascular compromise was detected. A PEEP titration-RM may be used to improve oxygenation in anesthetized ponies. During stable hemodynamic conditions, PEEP titration-RM can be performed with acceptable adverse cardiovascular effects.  相似文献

Cardiovascular effects and pulmonary gas exchange were compared during conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) and interrupted high-frequency, positive-pressure ventilation (IHFPPV) in 6 anesthetized ponies in dorsal recumbency. When the peak airway pressure (Paw) was held constant at control values attained during CMV (18 to 20 cm of H2O), and the ventilator frequency of IHFPPV was varied over the range, 2.5 to 12.5 Hz, significant (P less than 0.05) changes from control values were observed only in the ratio of dead-space volume to tidal volume (VD/VT) and in the respiratory minute volume (VE). The mean (+/- SEM) carbon dioxide excretion (VCO2) was 2.12 +/- 0.1 ml/kg/min during IHFPPV. Dead-space ventilation ranged from 40 to 73.7% of total ventilation and increased directly with increasing frequency. The VE also increased, from 89 ml/kg/min at a ventilatory frequency of 2.5 Hz to 145 ml/kg/min at a frequency of 12.5 Hz. Maintaining the frequency of IHFPPV constant at 12.5 Hz and increasing the Paw over the range of 5 to 30 cm of H2O caused significant (P less than 0.05) changes in arterial partial pressure of O2 (PaO2), VCO2, pulmonary shunt fraction (QS/QT), VE, arterial-alveolar differences in oxygen tension (AaDO2), VD/VT, and cardiac output, compared with CMV. The PaO2 and the VCO2 increased linearly with increasing Paw. With increasing Paw, VD/VT decreased directly with increasing Paw from 98 to 69.3%. Gas exchange at a Paw of 15 cm of H2O during IHFPPV was equivalent to conditions at Paw of 20 cm of H2O during CMV. At a higher Paw during IHFPPV, improvements over control values were observed in gas exchange.  相似文献

Cystometrography and urethral pressure evaluations were performed in 7 horse mares and 5 pony mares before and after sedation with xylazine. Before sedation, mean (+/- SD) maximal bladder contraction pressure was 91.4 +/- 16.5 cm of H2O in horses and was 86.0 +/- 14.4 cm of H2O in ponies, and maximal urethral closure pressure was 49.1 +/- 19.4 cm of H2O in horses and 37.7 +/- 14.4 cm of H2O in ponies. A significant difference was not found between values of nonsedated vs sedated animals. Only values for threshold volume were significantly different (P less than 0.05) between nonsedated horses (1,982 +/- 1,241 ml) and ponies (825 +/- 412 ml).  相似文献

Despite numerous benefits of laparoscopic procedures, the serious hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis in hypercapnic patients with decreased pulmonary compliance during carbon dioxide-induced pneumoperitoneum (CDP) may be developed. Tracheal gas insufflation (TGI) has been shown to be a useful adjunct to controlled mechanical hypoventilation. This study was undertaken to identify whether TGI superimposed on controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) improve ventilatory efficiency during CDP in rabbits. Sixteen paralyzed and anesthetized rabbits were used. The animals were assigned to two groups-CMV group: CMV alone; TGI group: CMV superimposed by TGI with flow rate of 2L/min. The animals were insufflated to intra-abdominal pressure of 8 mmHg with CO2 gas. Then, tidal volume (V(T)) was changed to maintain the set peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) value, while other ventilatory settings were kept constant. The set PIP value corresponding to 30, 60, and 90 min after the start of peritoneal insufflation of CO2 were 15, 22, and 25 cm H2O, respectively. During CDP with TGI, PaCO2 decreased significantly (p<0.01) from CMV without TGI of 82.1 +/- 14.1 to 47.5 +/- 5.5, 58.1 +/- 9.9 to 40.0 +/- 4.6, 47.1 +/- 9.4 to 32.7 +/- 5.1 mmHg at PIP of 15, 22, and 25 cm H2O, respectively. The inspired V(T) decreased significantly (p<0.05) from CMV without TGI of 18.4 +/- 3.9 to 12.8 +/- 2.8 ml at PIP of 15 cm H2O. TGI superimposed on CMV is more effective than CMV alone in enhancing ventilatory efficiency during CDP in rabbits.  相似文献

Systemic distribution of blood flow was studied in 11 healthy adult grade ponies, using radionuclide-labeled microspheres (15 micron diameter) that were injected into the left ventricle. Measurements were made at rest, during severe exercise (SE) without furosemide, as well as during SE at 10 minutes and 120 minutes after furosemide administration (1.0 mg/kg, IV). During SE, heart rate, cardiac output, mean aortic pressure, and whole body O2 consumption were 220 +/- 4 beats/min, 720 +/- 44 ml/min/kg, 169 +/- 4 mm of Hg, and 126 +/- 9 ml of O2/min/kg, respectively. With SE performed after furosemide administration, mean aortic pressure decreased from prefurosemide SE value (P less than 0.05), but heart rate, cardiac output, and whole body O2 consumption remained similar to values during SE without furosemide. During SE, blood flow to cerebellar gray matter, pons, and medulla oblongata increased despite marked hypocapnia, but in other regions of the brain, blood flow was unchanged. As arterial O2 content increased by 58% with SE, O2 delivery to all brain regions increased. With SE, adrenal gland blood flow increased, but intense vasoconstriction in the kidneys, spleen, pancreas, small intestine, and colon caused blood flow to plummet. During SE, blood flow in the diaphragm, gluteus medius, biceps femoris (muscles of propulsion), and triceps brachii muscles increased to a similar level, indicating that metabolic requirements of the diaphragm during exercise may not be less than those of other vigorously contracting muscles.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Central venous pressure measurements were made in 74 horses and ponies free from clinical evidence of cardiopulmonary disease. Using the sternal manubrium as the zero reference point, the mean value obtained was 12 cm H2O (S.D. +/- 6). There was a significant correlation with body weight (r=0.6, p less than 0.001) but there was none with age, sex, breed or type. During halothane anaesthesia, using the same reference point, the mean value was 24.5 cm H2O (S.D. +/- 6) in 28 animals in right lateral recumbency, 29 cm H2O (S.D. +/- 8) in 17 animals in left lateral recumbency and -6 cm H20 (S.D. +/- 4) IN 27 supine animals. The use of the sternal manubrium as zero reference point did not allow comparison of values in standing and recumbent animals and it was considered that serial measurements were of more value than isolated determinations in assessing the circulatory state of an animal.  相似文献

The influence of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on the alveolar-arterial O2 tension difference [P(A-a)O2], physiologic right-to-left shunt fraction, physiologic dead space-to-tidal volume ratio, and hemodynamic variables was studied in halothane-anesthetized horses maintained in dorsal recumbency during controlled ventilation. Dobutamine was used to minimize the adverse cardiovascular consequences of PEEP. Six adult horses were anesthetized, using xylazine (2.2 mg/kg of body weight, IM), guaifenesin (50 mg/kg, IV), thiamylal Na (4.4 mg/kg, IV), and halothane (1.5 to 2% inspired) in 100% O2. Mechanical ventilation was controlled to maintain arterial eucapnia for at least 45 minutes during base-line measurements. Hemodynamic and respiratory variables were determined every 15 minutes during equilibration. Each horse was subjected to 4 randomized treatments: 5 cm of H2O PEEP, 10 cm of H2O PEEP, 5 cm of H2O PEEP plus dobutamine (1 microgram/kg/min), and 10 cm of H2O PEEP plus dobutamine (1 microgram/kg/min). Each treatment lasted 15 minutes and immediately followed its predecessor. Although the magnitude of PEEP was randomized with and without dobutamine, PEEP without dobutamine always preceded PEEP with dobutamine. Differences in hemodynamic or respiratory variables among base-line measurements, 5 cm of H2O PEEP, or 10 cm of H2O PEEP were not significant (P greater than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To establish maximum oxygen consumption VO2max) in ponies of different body weights, characterize the effects of training of short duration on VO2max, and compare these effects to those of similarly trained Thoroughbreds. ANIMALS: 5 small ponies, 4 mid-sized ponies, and 6 Thoroughbreds. PROCEDURE: All horses were trained for 4 weeks. Horses were trained every other day for 10 minutes on a 10% incline at a combination of speeds equated with 40, 60, 80, and 100% of VO2max. At the beginning and end of the training program, each horse performed a standard incremental exercise test in which VO2max was determined. Cardiac output (Q), stroke volume (SV), and arteriovenous oxygen content difference (C [a-v] O2) were measured in the 2 groups of ponies but not in the Thoroughbreds. RESULTS: Prior to training, mean VO2max for each group was 82.6 = 2.9, 97.4 +/- 13.2, and 130.6 +/- 10.4 ml/kg/min, respectively. Following training, mean VO2max increased to 92.3 +/- 6.0, 107.8 +/- 12.8, and 142.9 +/- 10.7 ml/kg/min. Improvement in VO2max was significant in all 3 groups. For the 2 groups of ponies, this improvement was mediated by an increase in Q; this variable was not measured in the Thoroughbreds. Body weight decreased significantly in the Thoroughbreds but not in the ponies. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ponies have a lower VO2max than Thoroughbreds, and larger ponies have a greater VO2max than smaller ponies. Although mass-specific VO2max changed similarly in all groups, response to training may have differed between Thoroughbreds and ponies, because there were different effects on body weight.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on oxygen delivery (DO(2)) with 1-lung ventilation during thoracoscopy in normal anesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled experimental study. ANIMALS: Eight, adult, intact Walker Hound dogs weighing 25.6-29.2 kg. METHODS: Anesthetized dogs had 1-lung ventilation during an open-chest condition. A Swan-Ganz catheter was used to measure pulmonary hemodynamic variables and to obtain mixed venous blood samples for blood gas analysis. A dorsal pedal catheter was used for measurement of systemic arterial pressure and to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis. Oxygen delivery was calculated and used to assess the effect of 0, 2.5, and 5 cm H(2)O PEEP during 1-lung ventilation on cardiopulmonary function. Each dog was its own control at 0 cm H(2)O PEEP. A randomized block ANOVA for repeated measures was used to evaluate the effect of the treatment on hemodynamic and pulmonary variables. RESULTS: Use of 5 cm H(2)O PEEP induced a significant augmentation in the arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO(2)). Shunt fraction (Q(s)/Q(t)), physiologic dead space (V(D)/V(T)), and the alveolar-arterial oxygen difference (P(A-a)O(2)) decreased significantly after 5 cm H(2)O PEEP, compared with 1-lung ventilation without PEEP. Use of 2.5 cm H(2)O PEEP had no significant effect on cardiopulmonary variables. Use of PEEP had no significant effect on arterial oxygen saturation (SaO(2)), DO(2), and hemodynamic variables in normal dogs. CONCLUSIONS: PEEP had no effect on DO(2) in normal dogs undergoing open-chest 1-lung ventilation because it had no adverse effect on hemodynamic variables. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: PEEP in normal dogs during open-chest 1-lung ventilation for thoracoscopy is not detrimental to cardiac output and can be recommended in clinical patients.  相似文献

Six ponies with recurrent obstructive lung disease were studied during two separate 60 min periods while receiving constant equal volume infusions of either aminophylline or sterile water. Dynamic lung compliance, pulmonary resistance, respiratory rate, tidal volume, blood gas tensions and heart rate were measured. Plasma samples were obtained for determination of theophylline concentrations before, and at 10 min intervals during, the infusion period. Excitability was assessed subjectively at these same time periods. The plasma theophylline concentrations in ponies were well predicted by a previously published model of theophylline pharmacokinetics in the horse. Sterile water had no effect on lung function. Aminophylline produced significant changes in lung function compared to baseline values, including a decrease in resistance at 30 min when the mean plasma theophylline concentration was 59 +/- 14 mumol/litre and an increase in compliance at 60 mins at a mean plasma theophylline concentration of 102 +/- 23 mumol/litre. Excitement was noted between 40 and 50 mins in all ponies (mean plasma theophylline concentration 74 +/- 20 and 84 +/- 24 mumol/litre, respectively). Heart rate increased at 50 mins. The therapeutic range for intravenous (iv) theophylline concentration in 'heavey' ponies therefore appears to be between 59 and 84 mumol/litre when aminophylline is administered iv. Below 59 mumol/litre there was no consistent bronchodilator activity and above 84 mumol/litre excitement and tachycardia limited the usefulness of the drug.  相似文献

Blood flow to the brain, kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas, and small intestine was studied in 8 healthy ponies while awake (control) and during 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 minimal alveolar concentrations (MAC) of anesthesia produced, using halothane vaporized in oxygen. During the anesthesia steps, intermittent positive-pressure ventilation was used to ensure isocapnia. Organ blood flow was determined with 15-micron (diameter) radionuclide-labeled microspheres, after allowing 30 minutes of equilibration at each of the 3 preestablished end-tidal halothane concentrations. The sequence of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 MAC levels of anesthesia (0.90, 1.35, and 1.80% end-tidal halothane) was randomized for every animal. In the awake ponies, cerebral blood flow in the cortical (106 +/- 15 ml/min/100 g) and deep gray (103 +/- 12 ml/min/100 g) matter was approximately 5-fold of that in the white matter (22 +/- 3 ml/min/100 g). In the brain stem, there was a decreasing gradient of blood flow from the cranial (thalamohypothalamus: 65 +/- 8 ml/min/100 g) to caudal regions (medulla: 34 +/- 5 ml/min/100 g). Vasodilatation occurred in all regions of the brain with halothane-O2 anesthesia; the decrease in vascular resistance reached its nadir at 1.5 MAC. In the medulla and pons, blood flow increased above control values, with each of the 3 concentrations of halothane, but in the midbrain and thalamohypothalamus, it remained similar to the control value. In the cerebral white matter and cerebellum, blood flow increased with 1.0 and 1.5 MAC of halothane anesthesia, whereas mean aortic pressure decreased to 91% and 74% of the control value. Blood flow in the cerebral cortex was not different from the control value, even at 2.0 MAC of halothane, despite a 49% reduction in perfusion pressure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Electrically induced osteogenesis exhibits a dose response curve and can induce bone formation in the absence of trauma and in nonunions. Electrically induced osteogenesis, using direct electric current (DC) in a third metacarpal diaphyseal osteotomy model, in conjunction with internal fixation and postoperative loading, was investigated. Twelve young adult ponies of mixed sex were divided into 2 treatment groups (A and B) of 3 stimulated and 3 controls each and evaluated, using a specifically designed procedure. Stimulated ponies in both groups were given 20 microA of DC via an implanted bone growth stimulator (BGS); group A ponies were stimulated for 60 days and group B ponies for 120 days. Biocompatibility of the BGS was excellent in all ponies. Radiographically, there was more advanced healing with better vascular development in the ponies stimulated for 60 days compared with controls, but no discernible difference was seen at 120 days. Nuclear medical bone imaging revealed a peak uptake at 4 weeks in stimulated groups and the uptake decreased after 8 weeks. Radiopharmaceutical uptake in stimulated ponies was consistently below control uptake throughout the study. Mean specific gravity (SG) of specimens prepared for testing materials properties for group A and B controls were 2.044 +/- 0.119 and 1.939 +/- 0.065, respectively. The SG for group A and group B stimulated were 1.992 +/- 0.049 and 1.876 +/- 0.031, respectively. The SG of specimens obtained from metacarpi of age-matched control ponies was 2.194 +/- 0.166. The ultimate bending strengths and the flexural moduli of elasticity in 60-day control ponies and stimulated ponies were 57 +/- 8.4, 59 +/- 23.9 MN/m2 and 89 +/- 3.5, 106 +/- 6.5 MN/m2 and in 120-day control ponies and stimulated ponies were 13 +/- 1.0, 13 +/- 3.2 GN/m2 and 13 +/- 2.89, 15 +/- 0.577 GN/m2, respectively. Sixty-day samples and 120-day samples had pending strengths (SU) of 25% and 50% that of unfractured cortex, respectively. These findings indicate that 20 microA of DC stimulation on a diaphyseal osteotomy model may not stimulate sufficient bone production to affect the mechanical properties of the bone. Therefore, based on our research, clinical use of BGS in fresh fracture management cannot be recommended.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of endotoxin administered IV on glucose and insulin dynamics in horses. ANIMALS: 16 healthy adult mares. PROCEDURES: Each week of a 2-week randomized crossover study, each horse received an IV injection (duration, 30 minutes) of Escherichia coli O55:B5 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in 60 mL of sterile saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (20 ng/kg) or sterile saline solution alone (control treatment). Frequently sampled IV glucose tolerance test procedures were performed at 24 hours before (baseline) and 24 and 48 hours after injection; glucose and insulin dynamics were assessed via minimal model analysis. RESULTS: 13 of 16 horses had a clinical response to LPS, which was characterized by mild colic and leukopenia. Before treatment, mean +/- SD insulin sensitivity was 2.9 +/- 1.9 x 10(4) L x min(1) x mU(1); this significantly decreased to 0.9 +/- 0.9 x 10(4) L x min(1) x mU(1) 24 hours after treatment (69% reduction) and was 1.5 +/- 0.9 x 10(4) L x min(1) x mU(1) 48 hours after treatment. At baseline, mean +/- SD acute insulin response to glucose was 520 +/- 196 mU x min x L(1); this significantly increased to 938 +/- 620 mU x min x L(1) (80% increase) and 755 +/- 400 mU x min x L(1) (45% increase) at 24 and 48 hours after LPS treatment, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Compared with baseline values, insulin sensitivity was decreased for 24 hours after IV injection of LPS, and affected horses had a compensatory pancreatic response. These disturbances in glucose and insulin dynamics may contribute to development of laminitis in horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pasture, and specifically the addition of fructan carbohydrate to the diet, induces exaggerated changes in serum insulin concentration in laminitispredisposed (LP) ponies, compared with ponies with no history of the condition, and also to determine insulin responses to the dexamethasone suppression test. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 10 LP and 11 control adult nonobese mixed-breed ponies. PROCEDURES: Insulin-modified IV glucose tolerance tests were performed (5 ponies/group). In diet studies, ponies were kept on pasture and then changed to a hay diet (10 ponies/group). Second, ponies were maintained on a basal hay diet (4 weeks) before being fed a hay diet supplemented with inulin (3 g/kg/d [1.4 g/lb/d]). Serum insulin and plasma glucose concentrations were analyzed before and after dietary changes. Serum cortisol and insulin concentrations were also measured in a standard dexamethasone suppression test. RESULTS: The LP ponies were insulin resistant (median insulin sensitivity of 0.27 x 10(4) L min(-1) mU(-1) in LP ponies, compared with 0.64 x 10(4) L min(-1) mU(-1) in control ponies). Median insulin concentration in LP ponies was significantly greater than that in control ponies at pasture, decreased in response to feeding hay, and was markedly increased (5.5-fold) following the feeding of inulin with hay. The LP ponies had a greater increase in serum insulin concentration at 19 hours after dexamethasone administration (median, 222.9 mU/L), compared with control ponies (45.6 mU/L). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Nonobese ponies predisposed to develop laminitis had compensated insulin resistance, and this phenotype was revealed by feeding plant fructan carbohydrate or by dexamethasone administration.  相似文献

Tracheal, bronchial, and renal flow were studied in 8 healthy ponies at rest and during exercise performed on a treadmill at a speed setting of 20.8 km/h and 7% grade (incline) for 30 minutes. Blood flow was determined with 15-microns-diameter radionuclide-labeled microspheres that were injected into the left ventricle when the ponies were at rest, and at 5, 15, and 26 minutes of exertion. Heart rate and mean aortic pressure increased from resting values (40 +/- 2 beats/min and 124 +/- 3 mm of Hg, respectively) to 152 +/- 8 beats/min and 133 +/- 4 mm of Hg at 5 minutes of exercise, to 169 +/- 6 beats/min and 143 +/- 5 mm of Hg at 15 minutes of exercise, and to 186 +/- 8 beats/min, and 150 +/- 5 mm of Hg at 26 minutes of exercise. Tracheal blood flow at rest and during exercise remained significantly (P less than 0.05) less than bronchial blood flow. Tracheal blood flow increased only slightly with exercise. Vasodilation caused bronchial blood flow to increase throughout exercise. Pulmonary arterial blood temperature of ponies also increased significantly (P less than 0.05) with exercise and a significant (P less than 0.005) correlation was found between bronchial blood flow and pulmonary arterial blood temperature during exertion. At 5 minutes of exercise, renal blood flow was unchanged from the resting value; however, renal vasoconstriction was observed at 15 and 26 minutes of exercise. We concluded that bronchial circulation of ponies increased with exercise in close association with a rise in pulmonary arterial blood temperature.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To determine whether temperature of rehydration fluid influences voluntary rehydration by horses, six 2-3-year-old horses were dehydrated (4-5% body weight loss) by a combination of furosemide administration and 30 km of treadmill exercise. For the initial 5 min following exercise, horses were offered a 0.9% NaCl solution at 10, 20, or 30 degrees C. Subsequently, after washing and cooling out, voluntary intake of water at 10, 20, or 30 degrees C from 20 to 60 min after exercise was measured. Fluid intake (FI) during the first 5 min of recovery was 9.8+/-2.5,12.3+/-2.1 and 9.7+/-2.0L (p>0.05) for saline at 10, 20, and 30 degrees C, respectively. Although not a significant finding, horses offered 0.9% NaCl at 20 degrees C tended to take fewer (p=0.07), longer drinks than when saline at either 10 or 30 degrees C was offered. Between 20 and 60 min of recovery, intake of water at 20 degrees C (7.7+/-0.8L) and 30 degrees C (6.6+/-1.2L) was greater (p<0.05) than that at 10 degrees C (4.9+/-0.5L). Thus, total FI was 14.7+/-2.5,19.9+/-2.5, and 16.3+/-2.4L for rehydration fluids at 10, 20, and 30 degrees C, respectively (p<0.05, value for 20 degrees C water greater than that for 10 degrees C water). Although the amount of metabolic heat transferred to the initial saline drink was correlated with the decrease in core temperature during the initial 5 min of recovery, heat transfer to ingested fluid was most likely responsible for the dissipation of, at most, 5% of the heat generated during endurance exercise. In conclusion, following exercise these dehydrated-normothermic horses voluntary drank the greatest amount of fluid at near ambient (20 degrees C) temperature. Although not determined in this study, greater satiation of thirst by oropharyngeal cooling may have contributed to lesser intake of colder (10 degrees C) fluid.  相似文献

This study was designed to assess the effects of 5 anesthetic drug combinations in ponies: (1) ketamine 2.75 mg/kg, xylazine 1.0 mg/kg (KX), (2) Telazol 1.65 mg/kg, xylazine 1.0 mg/kg (TX), (3) Telazol 2 mg/kg, detomidine 20 micrograms/kg (TD-20), (4) Telazol 2 mg/kg, detomidine 40 micrograms/kg (TD-40), (5) Telazol 3 mg/kg, detomidine 60 micrograms/kg (TD-60). All drugs were given iv with xylazine or detomidine preceding ketamine or Telazol by 5 min. Heart rate was decreased significantly from 5 min to arousal after TD-20 but only at 60 and 90 min after TD-40 and TD-60 respectively. Respiratory rate was decreased significantly for all ponies. Induction time did not differ between treatments. Duration of analgesia was 10 min for KX, 22.2 min for TX, 27.5 min for TD-20, 32.5 min for TD-40, and 70 min for TD-60. Arousal time was significantly longer with detomidine and Telazol. Smoothness of recovery was judged best in ponies receiving KX and TD-40. All ponies stood unassisted 30 min after signs of arousal.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To acquire reference range values indicative of glucose metabolism by use of the hyperglycemic clamp technique in healthy horses and evaluate the usefulness of the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique in healthy horses and ponies. ANIMALS: Dutch Warmblood horses and 4 Shetland ponies. PROCEDURE: The hyperglycemic clamp technique was used for quantification of the sensitivity of beta cells to exogenous glucose infusion in horses. The euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique was used to determine the sensitivity and responsiveness of tissues to exogenous insulin in horses and ponies. RESULTS: During the hyperglycemic clamp technique, the mean amount of glucose metabolized (M) in horses was 0.011 +/- 0.0045 mmol/kg x min(-1) (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.0018 to 0.020 mmol/kg x min(-1); range, 0.000035 to 0.021 mmol/kg x min(-1)) and the mean M value-to-plasma insulin concentration (I) ratio (ie, mmol of glucose/kg x min(-1) per pmol of insulin/L x 100) was 0.017 +/- 0.016 (95% CI, -0.014 to 0.049; range, 0.000025 to 0.055). During the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp technique, the mean M value was 0.014 +/- 0.0055 mmol/kg x min(-1) (95% CI, 0.0026 to 0.025 mmol/kg x min(-1); range, 0.0042 to 0.023 mmol/kg x min(-1)) in horses and 0.0073 +/- 0.0020 mmol/kg x min(-1) (95% CI, 0.0034 to 0.011 mmol/kg x min(-1); range, 0.0049 to 0.011 mmol/kg x min(-1)) in ponies. The M value was significantly lower in ponies than in horses, whereas the M:I ratios were not significantly different between horses and ponies.
