The neurons in bilateral superior cervical ganglia (SCG) innervating the chick pineal gland were labelled by using the technique of retrograde axonal labelling with cholera toxin B subunit linked to horseradish peroxidase (CTB-HRP). To our results, perikarya of these sympathetic neurons distributed from rostral to caudal in the SCG, and mainly localized in the opposite side of the paravertebral trunk. The fibres of these neurons were collected by the cephalic carotid nerve. According to the sizes of somal area and dendritic field, these sympathetic neurons projecting to the pineal gland were classified into four major groups: group I cells (52.4%) with a small somal area (303.5 μm2 on average) and narrow dendritic field (3767.8 μm2 on average), group II cells (39.0%) with a middle-sized somal area (473.3 μm2) and middle-sized dendritic field (7522.2 μm2), group III cells (6.4%) with a middle-sized somal area (473.4 μm2) and wide dendritic field (13 104.4 μm2), and group IV cells (2.2%) with a large somal area (940.7 μm2) and wide dendritic field (14 553.2 μm2). Of these pineal projecting neurons, most took on a lesser dendritic field. The neurons with small or middle-sized dendritic field from group I and II were about 91.4% of the total neurons labelled with CTB-HRP, and the neurons with wide dendritic field from group III and IV were less with 8.6%.  相似文献

Nineteen dogs with histologically confirmed soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities were treated with a combination of marginal surgery and intra-operative chemotherapy in the form of cisplatin in a biodegradable implant delivery system (Atrigel®; Atrix Laboratories, Fort Collins, Co, USA). None of the dogs had evidence of metastasis at time of treatment. The median dose of cisplatin was 52.1 mg/m2 (mean 55.4 mg/m2, range 18.5–108.6 mg/m2). Wound complications were noted in 16 dogs (84.2%). Median follow-up time was 874 days (mean 777 days, range 125–1463 days). Nine dogs (47.3%) were alive at the time of analysis. Local recurrence occurred in three dogs (16.6%). The time to recurrence was 214, 264 and 874 days.  相似文献

Despite the availability of commercial tissue equivalent bolus material, wet gauze has an application in radiation therapy to provide superior conformance to irregular contours. Wet gauze bolus has the potential to reduce air gaps between the bolus and surface, which could decrease surface dose if sufficiently large to disrupt electronic equilibrium. Wet gauze bolus is often fabricated and wetness judged qualitatively. We assessed the effect of specific gauze wetness levels, quantified in terms of physical density, at various field sizes with respect to their effectiveness as bolus material compared with Superflab®. For large fields, >7 × 7 cm2 in this study, wet gauze sponges with a physical density of 1.02 g/cm3 performed essentially identical to Superflab®; at a smaller field size the wet gauze was slightly less effective, likely due to the heterogeneity of the gauze-water matrix. Gauze that was wetter, with a physical density of 1.2 g/cm3, or less wet, with a physical density of 0.75 g/cm3 was not as effective either due to enhanced photon absorption in the wetter sponges, or less effective establishment of electronic equilibrium in the less wet sponges. The presence of an air gap under Superflab® led to reduced surface dose, especially for small fields and large air gaps. Thus, if Superflab® use leads to poor contact with the skin, wet gauze having a physical density of 1.02 g/cm3 can be used as a substitute. Judging the water content of wet gauze subjectively is not acceptable as over- or under wetness can lead to decreased effectiveness of the bolus material.  相似文献

The ability of the SAV 6 high-frequency jet ventilator to effectively ventilate three anesthetized, paralyzed cats (3.2–4.2 kg), two small dogs (7.2 and 10.0 kg), six medium-sized dogs (20.5–25.0 kg), and three large dogs (36.0–43.0 kg) via a 14-gauge (dogs) or a 16-gauge (cats) catheter placed percutaneously into the trachea via the cricothyroid membrane or into a preplaced endotracheal tube was evaluated. The lowest driving pressure within the range of 0.25 to 2.0 kg/cm2 (1 kg/cm2= 14.2 psi) and the highest cycle rate within the range of 60 to 240 per minute that would generate a PaCO2 of 30 ± 3 mm Hg were determined.
All animals could be ventilated to a PaC02 of 30 ± 3 mm Hg by the endotracheal tube and transtracheal route, except the largest dogs, which couid be ventilated to an average PaC02 of 36 mm Hg by the transtracheal route. The transtracheal route consistently required higher driving pressures and lower cycle rates than did the endotracheal tube route. Cats could be ventilated with a driving pressure of 0.25 kg/cm2; small dogs could be ventilated with 0.5 to 1.0 kg/cm2; medium-sized dogs with 1.0 to 1.5 kg/cm2; and large dogs with 1.5 to 2.0 kg/cm2.
The SAV 6 high-frequency jet ventilator can effectively ventilate cats and dogs (7.2–43.0 kg) via a transtracheal catheter and an endotracheal tube.  相似文献

Forty-eight dogs with histologically confirmed appendicular osteosarcoma (OSA) entered a prospective clinical trial evaluating treatment with amputation and up to 4 doses of carboplatin given every 21 days. The median disease-free interval (DFI) was 257 days, with 31.2% of the dogs disease-free at 1 year. The median survival time was 321 days, with 35.4% of the dogs alive at 1 year. Dogs with proximal humeral OSA had shorter DFI (P = .016) and survival (P = .037) times than dogs with OSA at other locations. Dogs with lower body weights (40 kg) had longer DFI (P = .0056) and survival (P = .007) times than larger dogs. Survival times for dogs that received carboplatin were statistically longer than those previously reported for amputation alone (P < .001). DFI and survival times are similar to those previously reported for 2 to 4 doses of cisplatin. Carboplatin appears to be a well-tolerated chemotherapeutic drug that can be given safely every 21 days at a dose of 300 mg/m2. Neutropenia was the dose-limiting toxicity in this study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of an intensified dose protocol with no maintenance phase for the treatment of canine lymphoma. Forty-nine dogs all weighing more than 15 kg were entered. Dogs were staged and treated with a modified version of the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison protocol for lymphoma. Modifications included increased dosages of cyclophosphamide (250 mg/m2 compared to 200 mg/m2) and doxorubicin (37.5 mg/m2 compared to 30 mg/m2), with no crossover to chlorambucil or methotrexate. After 25 weeks on protocol (17 treatments), therapy was discontinued and dogs were monitored for relapse on a monthly basis. Disease-free interval (DFI) and overall survival were compared to 55 historical controls treated with the UW-Madison protocol. The 2 groups were comparable with respect to age, sex, breed, stage, presence of hypercalcemia, and CD3 status; a trend toward more substage b dogs was present in the high-dose group ( P = .076). When comparing response rate, DFI, death due to disease, and death due to treatment-related toxicity, more dogs were dead due to toxicity ( P < .001; odds ratio = 8.8) in the high-dose group. Overall survival between the high-dose and control groups did not differ significantly ( P = .55) at 270 and 318 days, respectively. The intensified dose protocol is an option for owners who are willing to risk higher toxicity for a shorter protocol with no statistical difference in survival from the UW-Madison protocol.  相似文献

Treatment of Tumor-Bearing Dogs With Actinomycin D   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Fifty dogs with advanced malignancies were treated with actinomycin D at doses ranging from 0.5 to 1.1 mg/m2 every 3 weeks. The greatest number of responses was noted in dogs with lymphoma, including dogs that had received prior chemotherapy. Other responding tumor types included anal sac adenocarcinoma, perianal adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, and transitional cell carcinoma. The median time to maximum response for dogs with lymphoma was 7 days, with a median duration of 42 days. Gastrointestinal toxicity was the most frequently observed side effect. A dose of 0.6 to 0.7 mg/m2 appears to be appropriate for treating various malignancies in dogs.  相似文献

Abdominal vasculature can be evaluated non-invasively using 2-D ultrasound imaging and Doppler ultrasonography.5,6,12 The identification of abdominal vessels using ultrasound is based on knowledge of their normal location, appearance and relationship to specific organs. Because anatomic location of major abdominal vessels is fairly consistent, finding and following vessels is a useful aid when attempting to locate and evaluate juxta-vascular organs. Sonographic vascular evaluation may be beneficial in providing information regarding central cardiovascular abnormalities, detection of abnormalities involving the vessel interrogated, or detection of abnormalities of the parenchymal bed that the vessel supplies,5–12 Knowledge of the location and appearance of the vessels is necessary for this information to be of diagnostic value.
In this paper, abdominal vessels in the dog are reviewed and a sonographic map of major abdominal vessels is described. This includes the sonographic appearance of the aorta, caudal vena cava, and portal vein, their major branches and their anatomic relationship with adjacent organs.
Identification of the medial iliac lymph nodes, mesenteric lymph nodes, abdominal esophagus, duodenum, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands and liver lobes are assisted by recognizing specific vascular landmarks. The locations and appearances of pertinent organs as pertains to abdominal vasculature (caudal vena cava and aorta) are described.  相似文献

The response of advanced stage cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) following treatment with photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been poor. It was the aim of this pilot study to determine whether an increase in the delivered fluence (i.e. energy density) would improve the duration of tumour remission in cats with advanced-stage SCC. Tumours were treated with aluminium phthalocyanine tetrasulphonate (AlPcS4) PDT at a fluence of either 100 J cm−2 or 200 J cm−2 and tumour response was evaluated at regular intervals. Those feline tumours treated with a fluence of 100 J cm−2 ( n = 8) had a significantly shorter median remission duration (69 days; range 0–619 days) than those feline tumours treated with 200 J cm−2 ( n = 6; 522 days; range 151–1057 days). It is our conclusion that a fluence of 200 J cm−2 is well tolerated and more effective when treating cats with advanced stage cutaneous SCC.  相似文献

Contents: The morphological appearance of ovarian structures in 79 sows with ovarian cysts was examined. Sixty sows had been culled due to sterility; 19 sows had been repeatedly investigated clinically before slaughter. It was found that cystic ovaries without corpora lutea (CL) had the largest diameter and volume (151.3 cm3), in comparison to both cystic ovaries with CL (85.7 cm3) and normalovaries (16.9 cm3). The number of cysts on ovaries without corpora lutea was approximately twice as high as on the ovaries with CL (23.3 vs 12.1 cystslsow; p < 0.001). A combined form of degeneration consisting of large (> 1.5 cm in diameter) and small (1.5 em in diameter) cysts was found in 63% of the animals, whereas degeneration with only small cysts occured in 8% of the cases. Dark CL, interpreted as being functional, were mainly present in animals with up to 10 cysts per sow (24 out of 27 sows, p < 0.001); pale CL, interpreted as being weakly functional, were mainly found on ovaries with more than 10 cysts (19 out of 23 sows; p < 0.001). Based on macroscopical differentiation cyclic activity was found to be dependent to the number of cysts. Regular or irregular estrous cycles were observed in oligocystic animals (10 cysts/animal) with functional CL (58%). Up to 75% of the animals with pale or absent CL showed no estrous activity.  相似文献

Purpose  To determine the effects of a standardized intravenous dose of an α-2 agonist (Domitor®, Orion Pharma, distributed by Pfizer Animal Health, Exton, PA) on the electroretinogram (ERG) response in normal dogs.
Methods  Twenty-five normal dogs were used to collect ERG responses including a- and b-wave implicit times (IT) and amplitudes (AMP) before and after administration of medetomidine. Dogs were dark adapted for 20 min and ERGs were obtained using the HMsERG (RetVetCorp Inc., Columbia, MO). The QuickRetCheck protocol (Narfström) was employed to provide the following flash intensities: 10 mcd s/m2, 3 cd s/m2, and 10 cd s/m2. ERGs were repeated after 375 µg/m2 of medetomidine intravenously. Statistical analysis of the difference between the responses before and after medetomidine at all flash intensities was performed using a mixed effects model for anova .
Results  The P value for the effect of medetomidine on each of the ERG responses was < 0.01. The estimates of the effect of medetomidine were (+)1.35 ms, (–)23 µV, (+)3.16 ms, and (–)47 µV for the a-wave IT, a-wave AMP, b-wave IT, and the b-wave AMP, respectively.
Conclusions  Medetomidine significantly prolongs the implicit time and lowers the amplitude response of both the a- and b-waves in normal dogs at all flash intensities examined. Clinically, however, medetomidine only minimally affects the retinal responses and is a viable choice for use in dog ERGs.  相似文献

QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR INDIRECT CT LYMPHOGRAPHY   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this investigation, we applied quantitative CT methods to characterize contrast enhanced lymph nodes opacified using iodinated contrast media for indirect CT lymphography. lodinated nanoparticles were injected into the buccal submucosa and SQ into the metatarsus and metacarpus of four normal swine (1.0–4.0 ml/site, 76 mg I/ml). Attenuation (HU), volume (cm3), iodine concentration (mg I/cm3), total iodine uptake (mg I), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and percent injected dose (%ID) were estimated in opacified inguinal, cervical and parotid/mandibular lymph nodes using manual image segmentation techniques on 24 hour post-contrast CT images. Lymph node volumes estimated by multiple slice ROI analysis were compared with estimates obtained by post-excisional weight measurements. HU and iodine concentration increased 5–20 fold in opacified nodes (p < 0.01) and CNR increased more than four-fold (p < 0.001). %ID ranged between 3.5 and 11.9% and did not appear dose related. ROI estimated lymph node volumes approximated volumes calculated from weight measurements. (R2= 0.94, p < 0.0001). We conclude that interstitially injected iodinated nanoparticles increase attenuation and conspicuity of targeted nodes on CT images. Quantitative methods could play an important clinical role in more accurate metastasis detection.  相似文献

Systemic Toxicity Associated With Doxorubicin Administration in Cats   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The systemic toxicity of doxorubicin, 30 mg/m2 body surface area (BSA) every 21 days to a cumulative dose of 300 mg/m2, was evaluated in six cats. Appetite, body weight, and the presence of vomiting and/or diarrhea were monitored throughout the study. Renal function was monitored by measuring serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine concentrations, urine specific gravity, and creatinine clearance before each treatment. Electrocardiograms and echocardiograms were also done before each treatment. The cats were killed 3 weeks after the last treatment, and complete necropsies were performed. Partial or complete anorexia occurred in all cats with significant weight loss occurring after a cumulative doxorubicin dose of 150 mg/m2 BSA. Mild vomiting and diarrhea that required no treatment also occurred sporadically in all cats. Echocardiographic changes consistent with doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopa-thy occurred in four cats after cumulative doses of 170 to 240 mg/m2 BSA. Clinical heart disease and electrocardiographic changes were not observed. Subsequent histological examination revealed myocyte vacuolization and myocytolysis in all six hearts. Renal dysfunction, characterized by increasing azotemia with progressively more dilute urine, was detected in two cats. Mean creatinine clearance values also decreased significantly throughout the study. At necropsy, all cats had histological evidence of renal disease. Twenty-five dogs with malignant lymphoma refractory to chemotherapy were treated with actinomycin D at a median dose of 0.7 mg/m2 (range, 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m2) every 3 weeks. The dogs treated had received between 2 and 8 chemotherapeutic agents (median 7), for a median of 266 days before being treated with actinomycin D. For 23 of the 25 dogs, previous chemotherapy included doxorubicin. No dog responded to actinomycin D chemotherapy.  相似文献

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection results in fluid and electrolyte losses in the small intestine. We investigated the effect of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) hydrolysis products of wheat middlings (WM) and flaxseed (FS) on net absorption of fluid and solutes during ETEC challenge. Products were generated by incubating WM and FS with a blend of carbohydrase enzymes to produce 2 products: 80% ethanol-soluble (ES) and 80% ethanol-insoluble (EI) which were studied in 2 experiments in which 2 factors were investigated: products (EI vs. ES) and time of ETEC challenge (before vs. after perfusion). Pairs of small-intestine segments, one non-challenged and the other ETEC-challenged were perfused with products for 7.5 h. ETEC reduced fluid absorption by more than 380 µL/cm2 in saline (control) perfused segments, whereas this reduction was significantly ( P  < 0.05) less for the WM and FS products. Interaction ( P  > 0.05) between product and time of challenge was not observed. For WM, products effects on ETEC-challenged segments were such that perfusion of ES resulted in higher total solute (measured as osmolality) absorption than EI (138 vs. 103 µOsmol/cm2). In conclusion, hydrolysis products from WM and FS were beneficial in maintaining fluid balance during ETEC challenge, suggesting potential in controlling ETEC induced diarrhea in piglets.  相似文献

An 11-year-old Siamese cat with an osteogenic sarcoma of the nasal cavity was treated by partial surgical excision followed by a course of high dose-per-fraction radiation therapy in conjuction with metronidazole, a hypoxic cell sensitizer. Four thousand two hundred rads were delivered to the tumor in 7 weekly fractions. Each treatment was preceded by 6 gm/m2 oral metronidazole given 3 hours before irradiation. There were no untoward side effects and the cat was in remission 2 years after treatment.  相似文献

The effects of buprenorphine in combination with acepromazine, midazolam or medetomidine were compared in dogs. Induction and recovery times, heart rate, respiratory rate and body temperature were measured. Posture, reaction to noise, analgesia and muscle relaxation were assessed and a global score of "sedation-analgesia" was calculated. There were 3 groups of 4 animals: group 1 received 0.1 mg.kg-1 acepromazine IM and 20 minutes later, 10 g.kg-1 buprenorphine IV; group 2 received 1 mg.kg-1 midazolam IV simultaneously with 10 ig.kg-1 buprenorphine IV and group 3 received 1 mg/m2 body surface area medetomidine IM and 20 minutes later, 10 Hg.kg-1 buprenorphine IV. Only one dog given acepromazine and buprenorphine reached a "sedation-analgesia" stage, denned as the inability to stand together with the absence of reaction to stimulation, including pain. Animals in this group showed a decrease in respiratory rate and in body temperature. None of the dogs given midazolam and buprenorphine became sedated or showed signs of analgesia. Following this combination, the dogs were excited and showed dysphoric reactions which disappeared within 20 minutes.
All of the dogs given medetomidine and buprenorphine showed good sedation and analgesia lasting more than 20 minutes. This drug combination produced a decrease in heart and respiratory rates and body temperature.  相似文献

Effects of neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser irradiation on equine endometrium were evaluated In vitro and in six mares with endometrial cysts. The Nd:YAG laser was applied to six endometrial sites, in each of five uterine specimens, with power densities of 5659 to 33,954 J/cm2. Depth of tissue ablation was measured and graded on histologic sections of the tissue lesions. Power density had a significant effect on the depth of tissue ablation (p < .001). Grade 3 lesions (full-thickness ablation of the endometrium) were created with energy densities of 16,977 to 33,954 J/cm2. Six mares had endometrial cysts treated by photoablation. Two of the four mares that were reproductively sound but barren, despite appropriate breeding, produced foals after treatment. One mare remained reproductively unsound after treatment, and another mare that was treated postpartum was bred successfully.  相似文献

The frontal, caudal maxillary, and rostral maxillary sinuses of 10 equine cadavers were examined endoscopically, and the findings were confirmed by sinusotomy. Similar endoscopic examinations were performed in five conscious, adult horses by using sedation and local anesthesia. Useful portals of entry for the arthroscope in adult horses were: for the frontal sinus, 60% of the distance in a lateral direction from midline to the medial canthus and 0.5 cm caudal to the medial canthus; for the caudal maxillary sinus, 2 cm rostral and 2 cm ventral to the medial canthus; and for the rostral maxillary sinus, 50% of the distance from the rostral end of the facial crest to the level of the medial canthus and 1 cm ventral to a line joining the infraorbital foramen and the medial canthus. The frontal sinus portal was most useful for examination of the frontal and caudal maxillary sinuses. The caudal maxillary sinus portal was most useful for examining the sphenopalatine sinus. Structures in the frontal and caudal maxillary sinuses could be approached surgically by viewing them through the frontal sinus portal and guiding an instrument to them through the caudal maxillary sinus portal. Tooth root identification was reliable for the second and third upper molars in animals older than 5 years, but was more difficult for the rostral teeth and in younger animals. Endoscopy was not difficult to perform and was well tolerated in standing, sedated horses. The only complication of this procedure was mild, local subcutaneous emphysema that resolved spontaneously within 14 days.  相似文献
