Norway was requested by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to explore the use of high-velocity projectiles to replace cold harpoon as killing device for minke whales (Anon 1980). Tests of suitable high-velocity projectiles for minke whales were therefore initiated in 1982 as part of a wider project with the purpose of studying alternative killing methods to the traditional cold harpoon used in the Norwegian minke whale hunt until 1984 (Øen 1995). The results of the trials have previously been presented in unpublished reports to the IWC (Øen 1982, 1983, 1992).  相似文献

A penthrite grenade to replace cold harpoons in the Norwegian minke whale hunt was developed in 1983–1985. Data on survival times for 259 minke whales were collected from the trials in the 1984–86 hunting seasons, when 3 different prototypes were used. About 45% of the whales were killed instantaneously. The median survival time was 72 s. A substantially higher percentage of instantaneous deaths was recorded for penthrite grenades than for cold harpoons. The criteria for death were cessation of flipper movement, relaxation of the mandible, or sinking without any active movement. Some animals dived before the criteria could be controlled. If the central nervous system, heart, lungs or main vessels were damaged, a high percentage of the animals died instantaneously. In most cases, hits and detonations outside the thorax and central nervous system resulted in longer survival times than hits in the thorax. Survival time increased with whale size and range for animals not killed instantaneously. Marksmanship, technical and functional reliability of equipment and hunting techniques were all crucial to a good result. Better training of gunners, improved weapons and hunting equipment and more rapid reshooting of wounded animals would reduce the proportion of long survival times.  相似文献

Until 1984, cold harpoons, i.e. harpoons with no detonating device, were used to hunt minke whales in Norway. To investigate the effectiveness of such harpoons and compare them with alternatives, data on kills using cold harpoons were collected as part of a project dealing with alternative killing techniques for whales. Data on 353 whale kills were collected in 1981–83. The criteria used to determine the time of death were cessation of flipper movement, that the mandible relaxed, or that the whale hung immobile from the harpoon line. These criteria do not take into account any movements caused by spinal reflexes. About 17% of the animals died instantaneously (≤10 s). The median survival time was 570 s. Animals died most rapidly if hit in the brain, heart or major blood vessels. If only the lungs were injured, minke whales died less rapidly than terrestrial mammals. For whales that did not die immediately, shooting range, animal size and the angle of the shot all influenced the time to death. The efficiency of cold harpoons could be improved, but their use was no longer considered acceptable, and they were replaced by harpoons with penthrite grenades in 1984.  相似文献

The state of sensibility was determined from the study of electroencephalograms (EEC) which were of a bipolar transhemispheric derivation. In 3 pigs slaughtered by bilateral severance of both common carotid arteries and jugular veins, it was judged that insensibility occurred within 25s and there was no resurgence of cerebrocortical activity following subsequent respiratory gasps. The EEGs became isoelectric within 115s. These results are compared with previous findings by the authors that adult sheep and lambs slaughtered by similar techniques became insensible within 7s whereas, in calves, the onset of insensibility was delayed for up to 85s and there were resurgences of cerebrocortical activity, following a respiratory gasp, for more than 300s.

These differences in the apparent onset of insensibility in the 3 species of animal are discussed in relation to the anatomical features and possible dynamics of the blood supply to the brain during slaughter.

It is concluded that for humane reasons, “head-to-back” electrical stunning of pigs is preferable to a “head-only” method.  相似文献

Water is regarded as one of the most important distributors of infectious diseases. Moreover it can carry chemical compounds and toxic substances. Presently there are no specific legal regulations which define the quality of the drinking water for animals in Germany. However, some rules and criteria exist which help to survey and secure the water supply of animals on farm level. When controlling the hygienic quality of water on the farm it is necessary to investigate not only the water itself but also the local facilities around the water well. If health problems occur in the stock the water tanks, the tubing system which distributes the water in the animal houses and the drinkers have to be checked carefully. Water samples for the analysis on microorganisms and chemical contaminants should be taken according to a strict protocol. The regulations of the German drinking water directive for humans can be used as an orientation to characterise the drinking water quality for the animals. Nevertheless it seems useful to elaborate animal species specific thresholds for water contaminants particularly for food producing animals. This paper reviews recent data relating to the efficiency and humaneness of the methods used to kill minke whales in commercial and special permit whaling operations. In the 1980s a grenade-headed harpoon was developed for minke whaling. Most recent results indicate that in the Norwegian industry approximately 60 per cent of whales were considered to be killed immediately by this harpoon, with 40 per cent being wounded. However, in Japanese whaling operations, generally only 30 per cent of whales were killed immediately, with 70 per cent being wounded. In both operations, more than six minutes elapsed before half the wounded whales were pronounced dead, with some whales surviving for more than an hour after being harpooned. Details of morphology and distribution of hepatic macrophages in cetaceans were investigated using the immunohistochemistry with an antibody (SRA-E5) generated against human macrophage scavenger receptor antigen. Liver samples were obtained from five species of cetaceans (Baird's beaked whales, short-finned pilot whales, Risso's dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and pantropical spotted dolphins). Except for two species of whales, the number of SRA-E5-positive Kupffer cells was greatest in the perivenous zone (zone 3), followed by the mid-zonal (zone 2) and periportal (zone 1) zones; this distribution pattern was different from that in cattle examined here and previously reported rodents with the highest number in zone 1. The frequency of Kupffer cell in each of zones was significantly different among species, and interestingly, the total mean of the Kupffer cell number in three zones increased as the body-length of species was small. In cetaceans, Kupffer cells in zone 1 appeared larger and more stellate in shape, whereas those in zone 3 were smaller and rounder. All cetaceans but Baird's beaked whales had the black pigment-containing Kupffer cells, with the greatest number in zone 3, and macrophages with the similar pigments were also seen in the hepatic intermediate septa, indicating an active phagocytosis. Most of the black pigments were considered to be lipofuscin and such pigments were not seen in the bovine livers. These results indicate that cetacean hepatic macrophages show differences in the distribution and phagocytosis among hepatic lobular zones, or between cetacean species and terrestrial animals.  相似文献

The isolated heads of a Friesian bull and three large, Large White pigs were shot from various aspects with a 12-gauge shotgun using both a single 28 g solid lead projectile and buckshot, the latter consisting of nine individual lead pellets with a combined mass of 28 g. The sites of impact to the skull included the conventional frontal region, an occipital site and immediately behind the ear. A live mature Large White sow was shot with buckshot in the depression just caudal to the right ear, resulting in immediate insensibility and death. The damage caused to the isolated heads indicated that similar effects could be expected if the heads had been part of intact living animals. It is suggested that buckshot (nine lead pellets with a combined mass of 28 g) fired from a 12-gauge shotgun may be suitable for the emergency slaughter or euthanasia of a wide variety of domestic livestock and other species of animal.  相似文献

The phenomenon of endocrine disruption can be regarded as part of the disciplines of toxicology and environmental toxicology. These two disciplines have generated guideline protocols on how various effects of chemicals should be tested as a basis for regulatory decisions. These protocols almost exclusively involve laboratory rodents and the data obtained are then used for human risk assessment. Would it be justifiable, then, to introduce or promote the use of other species in these test protocols? There are, at any rate rationales for studying effects in species other than laboratory rodents: (1) other species may better mimic the human system; (2) they may in some cases be more useful for studying a certain mechanism or phenomenon; (3) they may highlight the diversity of effects or sensitivity between species. However, there are at least two basic criteria that must be met for a species before it can be introduced in this context: (a) we must have a good understanding of the physiological system to be studied; and (b) we must have a number of tools to study effects on this system. When it comes to the reproductive system – regarding which most endocrine disruption has been reported – farm animals are second only, or in some respects superior, to laboratory rodents with respect to these criteria. This review gives examples of how farm animals can be of use in the study of endocrine disruption with a focus on the author's own data from studies in the pig.  相似文献

The present paper critically examines the subject of huntsmanlike hunting with traps as it is practiced in the Federal Republic of Germany. In this context, consideration is given to the aspects of protection of animals, protection of species and safety for people and domestic animals. Hunting with traps is regarded a necessary element within the legal duties of game preservation. Basically, the focus is placed on efficient hunting of predatory animals that are mainly active at night such as foxes, raccoons and martenlike beasts. Trapping instruments and catching methods that respect the above mentioned aspects are presented. The legislator is requested to set up binding quality standards for the traps to be used. Special training for all trappers with a final examination in theory and practice is considered inevitable.  相似文献

During the whaling seasons of 1981 and 1982 16 inspectors were on the whaling grounds to collect data about weapons and equipment, shooting facilities, hitting areas, reaction to hits, tissue and organ damage and killing times. The inspectors were instructed to confirm the criteria of death by personal observation before reading the time. Consequently the recorded times are appreciably longer than real killing time for a number of whales. The average killing time according to this method was 11 min 50 sec in the 1981 season and 12 min 40 sec in the 1982 season (Table I). 22.4% and 21.8% died instantaneously in the two seasons. Hitting the CNS or the heart was most effective. Hits in the abdominal cavity or the musculature prolonged the killing times considerably.  相似文献

Using a partial sanitation method "Enzootic Pneumonia" (EP) could be eradicated in 17 EP-reinfected pig breeding herds. Partial sanitation includes separation measures in form of a piglet and gilt free interval on one side and as an additional protection against reinfection the temporary feeding of a medicated diet on the other side. Frequent herd controls for several years as well as mixed fattening experiments with carcass examination combined with milk and blood serology served as criteria for the sanitation success. From these results it is concluded that the infection pathway of EP is mainly maintained by young animals in the herd. Contrary to total sanitation, which will amount to at least sFr. 720 per sow, partial sanitation will only cost between sFr. 40-170 per sow, depending on herd size. Therefore, partial sanitation may be regarded as a full alternative to total sanitation after an outbreak of EP.  相似文献

The implications of shooting animals in the area of the occipito-atlantal junction was evaluated in three sheep by recording changes in the EEG activity. In one sheep, a shot which entered the occipito-atlantal junction and fractured the first cervical vertebra failed to produce insensibility. In contrast, a shot in another sheep which struck the occipital condyles of the skull resulted in loss of cortical evoked responses, the presence of high amplitude low frequency activity and ultimately all loss of brain activity. These results provide evidence that shooting through the vertebral column does not necessarily transmit sufficient percussive forces to higher brain regions to produce immediate insensibility. This has important implications for the humane destruction of animals, particularly, as in the case of cetaceans, where the occipito-atlantal junction or a high neck position is a recommended target area.  相似文献

SUMMARY: The protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium has gained better recognition over the last decade as an enteropathogen in a wide variety of host animals. Prior to 1975, infections were thought to occur infrequently and to be largely asymptomatic in nature. However, recent studies have revealed the organism to be more prevalent and pathogenic than previously thought. Infections producing clinical disease have been recorded in numerous host species including man, and the organism is now regarded as a newly-emergent zoonosis. This paper collates information currently available on the host range and specificity, life cycle and pathogenicity of the parasite and summarises the various techniques used to diagnose infections. Continual advances in the ability to produce transgenic animals make it likely that such animals will become important components of animal agriculture. The full benefit of the technology, and justification of its initial cost outlay, will be dependent on the establishment within these animals of new traits not easily achievable by other means. Potential applications include enhanced nutrient digestibility with reduced fecal losses, significantly altered milk composition with superior nutritional properties, and enhanced disease resistance. Our goal is to enhance mastitis resistance of dairy cows by enabling the cells of the mammary gland to secrete additional antibacterial proteins. Proof of concept has been obtained through experimentation with a transgenic mouse model. Three lines of mice were developed that produce varying levels of lysostaphin in their milk. This protein has potent anti-staphylococcal activity and its secretion into milk confers substantial resistance to infection caused by intramammary challenge with Staphylococcus aureus, a major mastitis pathogen. Additional antibacterial proteins are being sought that will complement lysostaphin. A potential benefit of transgenic application of antibacterial proteins is the concomitant sparing in the agricultural use of antibiotics currently used as human therapeutics. Antibacterial proteins, such as lysostaphin, are not typically used as injectable or oral therapeutics because of immune-mediated or digestive destruction of their activity. In contrast, the immune system of transgenic animals will not consider the transgenic protein as being foreign. In addition we are exploring the potential of involution or mastitis responsive promoter elements for use in subsequent transgenic experiments designed to restrict lysostaphin production to these important time points. It is anticipated that genomics will play a role in unveiling candidate genes whose promoter elements will enable desired temporal expression patterns. The transgenic approach to insertion of new genetic material into agriculturally important animals is feasible but requires extensive prior evaluation of the transgene and transgene product in model systems.  相似文献

Humane euthanasia is considered to be the rapid and painless inducement of death. It is necessary for unconsciousness to occur quickly and be followed immediately by cardiac and/or respiratory arrest. Although many methods of euthanasia have been used, not all fulfill the criteria of humane euthanasia. One hundred and twenty stranding events of Stejneger’s beaked whales were reported in Japan between 1999 and 2011. The purpose of this study is to introduce pathological data and to discuss probable causes of death for 44 Stejneger’s beaked whales among them. The significant pathological findings were the pulmonary edema, parasitic granulomatous nephritis, emaciation, amyloidosis, suppurative bronchopneumonia and so on. The probable causes of death were categorized as noninfectious in 43 of the cases, which included drowning, starvation and secondary amyloidosis. One individual was diagnosed with septicemia, which was the only example of an infectious disease. Because we could not always perform advanced analyses, such as microbiology tests, biotoxin examinations or contaminant analyses, the finality of our findings may be impaired. However, the present study has broad implications on the causes of death of Stejneger’s beaked whales of the seas around Japan, which are valuable for the future studies and for the detection of emerging diseases.  相似文献

The perception of pain stimuli by nociceptors and their conduction to the diencephalon are approximately identical processes in higher animals and in man. There are however differences between man and animal as well as between the species of animals concerning mental processing and assessing of pain. The importance of fear must be taken into regard.
