Uterine rupture was diagnosed in 2 postpartum mares with hemorrhagic vaginal discharge. Both mares had abdominal pain, as evidenced by pawing, kicking at the abdomen, or attempting to roll. Peritoneal fluid analysis was useful in establishing a diagnosis. One mare had many RBC in the peritoneal fluid and was anemic; this mare was managed medically with oxytocin, antibiotics, and blood transfusion. The mare was able to raise her foal to weaning age. The second mare had many RBC, degenerate neutrophils, and intracellular and extracellular bacteria in peritoneal fluid. Surgical repair of the uterus was performed, and the mare was treated for peritonitis. The mare later became pregnant.  相似文献

Stallion-like sexual behavior in mares is rare, except in association with ovarian tumors or hormonal treatments. The rarity of the phenomenon was confirmed in a recent 3-year study. The mean number of mares with detected stallion-like behavior, including mounting with thrusts, during an entire ovulatory season was 5.7 (17/3 years) in a herd averaging 105 mares (5% incidence/mare/season). From a total of 17 mountings of an estrous mare by another mare, 15 occurred when the mounting mare was in the follicular phase and two when in the early luteal phase. Plasma testosterone concentration on the day of mounting was higher (P < 0.01) in the mounting mares (17.7 ± 2.3 pg/ml) than in the standing mares (10.9 ± 0.5 pg/ml). No other deviation in the endocrine, behavioral, or morphologic aspects of the estrous cycle was observed. In another study, testosterone was assayed daily from 7 days before to 4 days after ovulation in seven mares during estrous cycles with no detected mare-on-mare mountings. Concentrations during the follicular phase were highest on the days corresponding to when mare-on-mare mounting was detected in the previous study. It is concluded that the rare occurrence of stallion behavior by untreated mares with no detected ovarian tumors is a consequence of an unusually high, apparently transient fluctuation in circulating testosterone at the time of mounting.  相似文献

Two groups of 3 mares were inoculated with Haemophilus equigenitalis or Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the 1st day of estrus. Uterine flushing samples were recovered on day 3 of estrus and day 8 after ovulation for each cycle. Mares were killed 22, 25, and 30 days after inoculation with P aeruginosa and 45, 46, and 49 days after inoculation with H equigenitalis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was recovered from the uterus of 2 mares 48 hours after inoculation. Although the initial flushing sample of 1 of these 2 mares had an increased total protein concentration, there appeared to be little difference between protein concentrations of other uterine flushing samples. Haemophilus equigenitalis was recovered from the uterus of each of the 3 mares at postmortem. One mare had a slight, purulent discharge from the vulva. Total protein values were not increased in flushing samples from this mare after inoculation with H equigenitalis. Total protein values decreased in the last flushing sample of each of the 2 remaining mares. Swabbing the uterus was more effective than was homogenizing the uterine mucosa in isolating H equigenitalis.  相似文献

Endocrine diagnoses of granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) in the mare are frequently based upon determination of serum concentrations of inhibin, testosterone, and progesterone (GCT panel). In the present study, we examined results from 2,253 samples submitted for determination of GCT panel. In an additional subset of samples (n = 75), diagnosis of GCT was confirmed based upon surgery or necropsy. The objective of the current study was to examine the agreement between serum inhibin and testosterone concentrations in mares with serum progesterone concentrations less than or ≥1 ng/mL. Across all samples, elevations in serum inhibin or testosterone were noted in 15.2% or 17.3% of samples, respectively. For samples with progesterone <1 ng/mL, more (P = .001) samples had elevated inhibin than elevated testosterone, whereas for samples with progesterone ≥1 ng/mL, more (P < .0001) samples had elevated testosterone than elevated inhibin. For samples with progesterone <1 ng/mL, the agreement between elevated inhibin and testosterone was greater than that for samples with progesterone ≥1 ng/mL. In a subset of 53 samples with progesterone ≥1 ng/mL, 28 samples had endocrine evidence of a granulosa cell tumors based upon elevations of serum anti-Müllerian hormone, and 4 of these samples had endocrine evidence of pregnancy based upon estrone sulfate concentrations. For samples from mares with confirmed GCTs, 85% and 55% had elevated inhibin or testosterone, respectively. Based upon endocrine diagnosis, GCTs occur in mares with elevated progesterone and/or estrone sulfate, albeit at a low rate.  相似文献

This report describes two mares with hydrallantois. One mare spontaneously entered labor, while the other had labor induced. Uterine inertia necessitated that delivery be assisted in both mares. After delivery, each mare went into hypovolemic shock. One mare survived and the other had to be euthanatized due to rupture of the ventral abdominal musculature with inguinal herniation. The occurrence, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of hydrallantois in the mare are discussed.  相似文献

This paper reviews the equine granulosa cell tumour (GCT) and describes the clinicopathological features, treatment and outcome in seven cases of GCT in mares. Mares were presented with unilateral ovarian enlargement during the 2007 to 2010 breeding seasons. The mean (sd) age of the mares was 11.7 (5.96) years. Three mares were multiparous barren, three were nulliparous and one was primigravida. Behaviour at presentation was 57 per cent anoestrus, 28 per cent with stallion-like behaviour and 14 per cent with persistent oestrus. All mares had unilateral ovarian enlargement. Six non-pregnant mares had a small and inactive contralateral ovary; the pregnant mare had a single small corpus luteum on the contralateral ovary and was at three-and-a-half months' gestation. Enlarged ovaries measured 7 cm to an estimated 30 cm in diameter. 28 per cent had a multicystic ultrasound appearance, 57 per cent were dense structures and 14 per cent were of mixed appearance. Mean concentrations of progesterone were <1 ng/ml, oestrone sulphate 3.06 (2.32) ng/ml and testosterone 0.58 (0.64) nmol/l in non-pregnant mares. Inhibin was elevated in all non-pregnant cases at 7.6 (12.45) ng/ml. The pregnant mare had concentrations of progesterone 2.5 ng/ml, oestrone sulphate 81.0 ng/ml, testosterone 1.9 nmol/l and inhibin 1.31 ng/ml. Mares demonstrating stallion-like behaviour had a significantly higher (P<0.001) testosterone concentration (1.85 [0.07] nmol/l) than those that did not (0.34 [0.26] nmol/l). Three mares underwent unilateral ovariectomy and resumed cyclic ovarian activity within nine months of surgery.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether concentrations of dimeric inhibin (CaCA) are greater in plasma and tumor fluid from mares with granulosa-theca cell tumors (GTCT), compared with concentrations in plasma and equine follicular fluid (eFF) from control mares. ANIMALS: 6 mares with GTCT and 12 clinically normal mares. PROCEDURE: The alphabetaA immunoradiometric assay used 2 antibodies, one against each subunit of inhibin (alpha and betaA subunits). Tumor tissue, tumor fluid, and a single blood sample were collected at the time of surgical removal of the GTCT. A single blood sample was collected from 7 control mares during various stages of the estrous cycle. Five other control mares were ovariectomized when their ovaries contained growing follicles of 25 to 35 mm in diameter. A blood sample and eFF from the largest follicle were collected at the time of ovariectomy. RESULTS: Mares with GTCT had significantly greater plasma concentrations of betabetaA (mean +/- SEM, 0.86 +/- 0.53 ng of recombinant human-alphabetaA/ml), compared with control mares (0.14+/-0.02 ng/ml). Concentrations of alphabetaA in tumor fluid and eFF were similar. Concentrations of alphabetaA were significantly lower after ovariectomy. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dimeric inhibin concentration was higher in plasma from mares with GTCT than in plasma from control mares. Increased granulosa cell mass and loss of mechanisms regulating alphabetaA release in mares with GTCT likely accounted for the increase in plasma concentrations. Measurement of alphabetaA concentrations may be useful for identifying mares with GTCT.  相似文献

Seasonal serum concentrations of melatonin in cycling and noncycling mares   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To determine whether secretory patterns of melatonin change throughout the seasons in mares, blood samples were drawn byvenipuncture from nine mares at noon and midnight for five successive days at monthly intervals from August through July at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. In addition, during September, December, March, and June, blood samples were drawn from indwelling catheters at 2-h intervals for 48 or 72 h. Mares were predominantly Quarter Horses weighing approximately 450 kg and ranged from 3 to 12 yr of age. Mares were housed in outdoor paddocks with three-sided run-in sheds for shelter. During the noon and midnight bleeding period, mares were placed in a larger open-sided barn with outside runs. Mares remained outdoors with the barn being used as a shelter in the event of inclement weather. All lights in the shed were converted to red light. Often, moonlight provided enough illumination to collect blood samples. Mares were returned to their normal paddock after each sampling period. For analysis of data, a mare was considered to be cycling if serum concentrations of progesterone were greater than 1 ng/ mL. For a mare to be classified as exhibiting a nocturnal rise of melatonin, serum concentrations of melatonin had to be at least two times greater at midnight than at noon. By month, a relationship did not exist (chi2; P > 0.05) among mares that were exhibiting estrous cycles and exhibiting nocturnal rises of melatonin. Likewise, examination of serum profiles of melatonin taken at 2-h intervals for 48 h revealed considerable variation among mares throughout the seasons. A nocturnal rise in serum melatonin was observed only in June (P < 0.02). In March and December, serum melatonin was greater in cycling mares than noncycling mares, but the elevation was not associated with light-dark periods (P < 0.01). Two of the mares exhibited estrous cycles throughout the seasons but melatonin secretion in these two mares were similar to that observed in the seven mares that demonstrated seasonal anestrous. From these results, it does not appear that changes in serum concentrations of melatonin are used as a cue to regulate cyclic activity in the mare throughout the seasons.  相似文献

From 1980 to 1989, 8 cesarean sections were performed on an elective basis in 5 mares. Four mares had partially obstructed pelvic canals; 2 of these mares had previously lost foals because of dystocia. Cervical adhesions that might obstruct passage of the fetus through the pelvic canal was suspected in the fifth mare. Cesarean section was performed prior to mares entering the first stage of labor. Readiness for birth was estimated by development of the mare's mammary gland and the presence of colostrum in the udder. A ventral midline celiotomy provided excellent exposure and healed without complications in all instances. Eight viable foals were produced. One foal developed bacterial pneumonia and septicemia after surgery and died. Follow-up evaluation of the 7 foals discharged from the hospital failed to reveal complications associated with elective cesarean section. All mares survived the procedure. Fetal membranes were retained for up to 72 hours following surgery; however, systemic complications secondary to retained placenta did not develop. Three mares were bred subsequent to elective cesarean sections, with each mare conceiving the year following surgery. Three foals were produced by 1 mare and 2 foals have been produced by another mare by elective cesarean sections.  相似文献

Blastic transformation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and serum neutralization antibody levels for equine herpesivurs type 1 were measured in 19 mares from three farms at the time of termination of their pregnancy by normal foaling or viral abortion. The stimulation indexes of lymphocytes obtained from the mares from two farms (Farm 1 and 2) which had virus abortions, ranged from 2.1 to 10.8. But there was no significant difference in stimulation index levels between the aborting and normal foaling mares on these two farms. Equine herpesvirus type 1 was isolated from the mononuclear cells of one mare (No. 5) about two months after she aborted. The stimulation index of lymphocytes from that mare was not significantly different from that of other mares on these farms. Stimulation index of lymphocytes from the mares on one farm (Farm 3) where there was no virus abortion or previous history of virus abortion but were exposed to virus antigen from vaccination, ranged from 1.6 to 2.9. The serum neutralization antibody levels were low in most mares ranging from 1/4 to 1/20 and in three mares these were higher. There was no direct correlation between the levels of serum neutralization antibody and stimulation index of lymphocytes from the mares on these farms.  相似文献

Persistent purulent endometritis in a mare was attributed to an unclassified species of Corynebacterium. Following intrauterine infusions of 20% betadine for 5 days the purulent vulval discharge ceased and the mare appeared clinically normal. Based on histological examination of endometrial biopsy samples, the severe acute inflammatory reaction had largely resolved 2 days after therapy. Three maiden mares considered resistant to bacterial endometritis received single intrauterine inoculations of 1.8 X 10(9) colony-forming units of the Corynebacterium species. The uterine response was followed by vaginal speculum examinations, uterine cultures and cytology, and endometrial histology. After an acute inflammatory reaction, each mare had recovered completely within 2 weeks. Most rapid recovery occurred in the mare in estrus at the time of inoculation. Subsequent secondary infections were detected in two mares. The uncertainty of correlations between results obtained by various diagnostic techniques emphasized the problems associated with each. This report illustrates the concept that endometritis in individual mares may relate more to as yet unidentified "mare factors" controlling uterine defense than to primary invasion by bacteria.  相似文献

Segmental ischemic necrosis of the descending colon associated with discrete tears of the mesocolon were diagnosed in 2 mares following foaling. After foaling, both mares had a slow onset of signs of abdominal pain and gradual deterioration of clinical status. Increases in peritoneal fluid total protein concentration and WBC count and a palpable impaction of the descending colon on examination per rectum were useful diagnostic aids. Surgical intervention was successful in one mare, but not in the other.  相似文献

Antiserum generated in a horse against testosterone conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was administered to six lighthorse mares (androgen-immunized mares) 1 to 3 d before a prostaglandin-induced estrus and twice again at 2-d intervals. Six control mares were administered antiserum generated against BSA on the same schedule. Relative to testosterone, cross-reactivities of other steroids with the testosterone antiserum were (%): dihydrotestosterone, 52; 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol, 8.6; androst-4-ene-3,17-dione, 1.2; and all others tested less than .1. Tritiated testosterone binding in plasma increased (P less than .01) in androgen-immunized mares within 1 h and remained elevated (P less than .01) relative to controls for greater than 21 d. There was no effect (P greater than .10) of passive immunization against androgen on interval to estrus after prostaglandin injection, duration of estrus, ovarian volume, number of palpable follicles or follicular volume during estrus. In contrast, concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) were higher (P less than .05) in androgen-immunized mares than in control mares during estrus and early diestrus. Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and progesterone at those times were not affected (P greater than .10). From these data, we conclude that androgens in the mare during estrus may be involved with the regulation of LH secretion. In contrast, no involvement with FSH secretion was apparent under these short-term conditions.  相似文献

Previous research from our laboratory showed that approximately one third of obese, nonfoaling mares displayed a condition of hyperleptinemia coupled with hyperinsulinemia that resembled type 2 diabetes in humans. The current study was performed to evaluate the prevalence of the hyperleptinemic syndrome in lactating mares and its possible impact on their rebreeding success. Additionally, we investigated possible relationships between leptin levels in lactating versus nonlactating mares. In experiment 1, jugular blood samples were collected from 198 lactating mares on two occasions approximately 2 weeks apart. The mares resided on eight farms in Louisiana; breeds included Thoroughbred (n = 86), Quarter Horse (n = 71), Warmblood (n = 24), and draft-type (n = 17). Body condition scores (BCS) were measured at the time of blood sampling; plasma samples were assessed for leptin and progesterone concentrations. Reproductive and medical histories, as well as feeding regimens, were compiled on each mare. Based on our previous reports and examination of the current data, a mare was considered hyperleptinemic if her plasma samples contained greater than10 ng/mL leptin; normal was considered 6.0 ng/mL or less; mares with levels above 6.0 and 10 ng/mL or greater were classified as intermediate. Overall mean leptin concentration was 4.7 ng/mL, and average BCS was 5.5. After analysis, 24 mares were classified as hyperleptinemic (12%), 138 were classified as normal (70%), and 36 were classified as intermediate (18%). Leptin concentrations were affected by BCS (P = .08), with higher concentrations in mares with higher body condition; however, there were hyperleptinemic mares with BCS of 4 to 5.5. Feeding regimen affected leptin concentrations (P < .01), with mares on pasture full-time having the highest concentrations. There was no effect of breed, mare age, number of years the mare had been bred, number of live foals, progesterone concentrations, or last foaling date on leptin concentrations. Rebreeding success averaged 81% overall and was not affected by leptin classification. In experiment 2, nonfoaling mares kept on pasture had mean leptin concentrations of 7.0 ng/mL; 8 of 31 mares (26%) displayed hyperleptinemia. Mean leptin concentration was correlated with BCS (R2 = 0.65; P < .02) but was not affected by age of the mare. It was concluded that the hyperleptinemic condition occurs in lactating broodmares, even at BCS as low as 4. The overall incidence appears to be lower in broodmares than in nonfoaling mares, likely because of their lower BCS in general and the energy demands of lactation. Hyperleptinemia did not affect rebreeding success at the end of the breeding season.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether iontophoretic administration of dexamethasone to horses results in detectable concentrations in synovial fluid, plasma, and urine. ANIMALS: 6 adult mares. PROCEDURE: Iontophoresis was used to administer dexamethasone. Treatments (4 mA for 20 minutes) were administered to a tarsocrural joint of each mare. The drug electrode contained 3 ml of dexamethasone sodium phosphate at a concentration of 4 or 10 mg/ml. Samples of synovial fluid, blood, and urine were obtained before and 0.5, 4, 8, and 24 hours after each treatment. All samples were tested for dexamethasone using an ELISA. Synovial fluid also was evaluated for dexamethasone, using high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: The lower and upper limits of detection for dexamethasone in synovial fluid with the ELISA were 0.21 and 1.5 ng/ml, respectively. Dexamethasone administered at a concentration of 10 mg/ml was detected by the ELISA in synovial fluid of 5 mares from 0.5 to 24 hours and in urine of 4 mares from 0.5 to 8 hours after each treatment, but it was not detected in plasma. Mean synovial fluid concentration of dexamethasone was 1.01 ng/ml. Dexamethasone administered at a concentration of 4 mg/ml was detected by the ELISA in urine of 2 mares at 0.5 and 4 hours after treatment, but it was not detected in synovial fluid or plasma. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Iontophoresis cannot be considered an effective method for delivery of dexamethasone to synovial fluid of horses, because drug concentrations achieved in this study were less than therapeutic concentrations.  相似文献

In its first year of commercial availability in the United States, reports from the field indicated that Ovuplant™ (a deslorelin-containing slow-release implant for hastening ovulation in mares) was associated with a delayed return to estrus in mares not becoming pregnant. Supposedly this effect was particularly prevalent in mares subsequently administered PGF to cause luteal regression after embryo collection. The present experiment was conducted 1) to determine if the field observations were repeatable under controlled experimental conditions, and 2) to gather endocrine data that might yield information on the underlying cause(s) of this observation. Twenty-five light horse mares were used. Ovaries of each mare were examined by transrectal ultrasonography daily during estrus until ovulation. Once a follicle >30 mm was detected, the mare received either Ovuplant (treated group; N = 13) at the recommended dosage or a sham injection (controls; N = 12); treatments were administered in a manner to ensure that they were unknown to personnel involved with data collection. On day 7 after ovulation, each mare received a luteolytic injection of PGF. Mares were examined every other day until return to estrus or development of a 30 mm follicle, at which time daily examination was performed until ovulation. Jugular blood samples were collected daily. Two mares receiving Ovuplant did not return to estrus within 30 days and their data were not included in the statistical analyses; in contrast, no control mare exhibited such an extended interovulatory interval. For all other mares receiving Ovuplant, the interval between the first and second ovulations was longer (P = .0001) than that of control mares by an average of 6.2 days. In addition, plasma LH concentrations were lower (P <.05) in the treated mares on days 0 through 4, 9, 11, 18, and 19 after the first ovulation. Plasma FSH concentrations were also lower (P = .017) in treated mares from days 4 to 11 and on days 6 and 5 prior to the second ovulation (P = .005). Differences in progesterone and estradiol were observed but were less consistent than for LH and FSH. Mares receiving Ovuplant had fewer small (P =.026), medium (P = .003) and large (P = .045) follicles prior to the second ovulation. In conclusion, Ovuplant treatment at the recommended dosage decreased follicular activity after ovulation and increased the interovulatory interval in mares short-cycled with PGF. These effects appear to be mediated by a hyposecretion of LH and(or) FSH.  相似文献

Fifteen mares which had each lost their pregnancies 2 to 8 times during the preceding 6 years were used in a study comprising 1 or 2 breeding seasons for each mare. During the research period all 15 mares conceived and 10 of the mares had normal pregnancies in the 1st experimental year. Five mares resorbed/aborted once or twice during the 1st year. This was followed by a pregnancy that terminated in a live foal. Histopathological examinations of uterine biopsies showed a wide range of histopathological conditions, from absence of changes excessive for the mare's age and parity to the most severe changes of the endometrium. Most likely, endometritis, acute as well as chronic degenerative endometritis, is the most common cause of early foetal death in the mare. Good breeding management is essential and was often enough to make the mares produce a foal. Additional treatment was needed in some of the mares and was based on the course of the conceptus loss and the condition of the endometrium, as determined by clinical, histological, bacteriological and cytological examinations.  相似文献

Hydrallantois in the mare is a very rare condition, and clinical reports help to gather information to elucidate its pathogenesis, treatment options and prognosis. Five different cases of hydrallantois in the mare are reported in this article, all with the involvement of placentitis. The five mares were presented because of acute distention of the abdomen, dyspnoea, stiff gait and a lack of appetite. After a gradual release of the excessive amount of allantoic fluid, an abortion was induced in all five mares. The foals were either born dead or euthanized. The mares recovered quickly. One mare conceived within the same season, one remained barren despite several cycles of natural breeding, and no data were available on the other three mares. In this series, the condition is reported for the first time in two Shetland ponies, both pregnant with foals sharing a close genetic background. In both cases, the condition led to hyperlipidemia. The condition as it occurs in nulliparous mares is also discussed. Finally, the possible involvement of placentitis in the pathogenesis is emphasized.  相似文献

Peripheral blood samples from a 13-year-old Thoroughbred mare were submitted for chromosome analysis. The mare had a poor reproduction record only producing four live foals during her 10 years as a broodmare. She had remained barren or experienced early embryonic loss in the other 6 years. Chromosomal analysis revealed the mare carried a rare nonreciprocal translocation involving chromosomes 2 and 13 [64,XX,t(2;13)]. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with probes specific for horse chromosomes 2 and 13 were used to confirm the nonreciprocal translocation. Both conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques are important for identifying and characterizing chromosomal abnormalities in horses with poor reproductive performance, particularly in mares experiencing repeated early embryonic loss.  相似文献

A surgical technique for removal of one conceptus from mares with twin concepti more than 35 days of gestational age was evaluated. One conceptus was removed surgically from each of 15 mares carrying twin concepti that were 41 to 65 days of gestational age. As determined by ultrasonography, eight mares had bicornuate and seven mares had unicornuate twin concepti. For maintenance of pregnancy if surgical trauma should cause prostaglandin release and luteolysis, progesterone was administered prophylactically. Flunixin meglumine was administered perioperatively to minimize prostaglandin release. Five mares with bicornuate twin concepti delivered a single viable foal; in one mare the fetus was alive 4 days after surgery when the mare was euthanatized because of a fractured femur. None of the remaining feti in the seven mares with unicornuate twin concepti survived. The poor survival rate of unicornuate twin concepti was attributed to disruption of the remaining chorioallantois during surgery. Thirteen mares have been rebred successfully.  相似文献
