1. The behaviour and reactivities of visceral receptors to different mechanical and chemical stimuli in single unit preparations from the caudal mesenteric nerve of adult ducks were studied to examine the physiological roles of such receptors.

2. In total, 83 single unit activities were recorded from the caudal mesenteric nerve.

3. Receptors were grouped according to their locations in different layers of the rectum as (i) over the branching points of the blood vessel or in the serosal layer, (ii) in the muscle layer or (iii) in the mucous membrane of the rectum.

4. All the receptors, both spontaneous and non‐spontaneous, responded to mechanical probing. Receptors of the muscle layer responded to distension also and showed a slowly‐adapting nature. Most of the receptors of the other two groups were of the rapidly‐adapting type.

5. Conduction velocity ranged from 0.76 to 34.6 m/s.

6. Sympathetic afferent fibres from the hind gut ascend along the intestinal nerve and join the caudal mesenteric nerve via the colonic ganglion.  相似文献

Sensory nerve conduction velocities in the cutaneous afferents of the ulnar and peroneal nerves of the neurologically normal adult dog were determined by stimulation at stimulus intensities of 15, 20 and 25 V through subcutaneously placed electrodes and by the averaged evoked response technique. Stimulus intensities of 15 V for the ulnar nerve and 20 V for the peroneal nerve were adequate to measure the sensory nerve conduction velocities of these nerves. A linear relationship was seen between sensory nerve conduction velocity (y in m/s) and tissue temperature (x in °C) and the regression equations were expressed as follows: y=1.6x+12.3 at a stimulus intensity of 15 V for the ulnar nerve and y=2.0x–10.6 at 20 V for the peroneal nerve, respectively. The 95% confidence limits of the regressions of the sensory nerve conduction velocities against tissue temperature, obtained at a stimulus intensity of 15 V for the ulnar nerve or at a stimulus intensity of 20 V for the peroneal nerve, were proposed for a tissue temperature-dependent reference range to enable the clinician to evaluate graphically the sensory nerve conduction velocity in a diseased dog.  相似文献

In this present study was observed that the spermatids underwent morphological differentiation and modifications, which primarily comprised nuclear elongation, during the process of spermiogenesis in the domestic duck. The acrosome was formed and the flagellum developed concomitantly with nuclear modifications. Thus, various modifications could be observed during this process, especially changes in the distribution of cytoplasmic organelles. Long cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum present in the spermatid cytoplasm dissociated into vesicles and the distal centriole initiated the development of the flagellum in the cellular portion opposite to the acrosome. The ultrastructure of the spermatids of the domestic duck did not show the characteristic development of pre-acrosomal granules, but the acrosomal granule could be directly visualized in this species.  相似文献

1. Pituitary glycoproteins from domestic ducks and fowls were fractionated to separate luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) activities using the same chromatographic steps. 2. Fractions were bioassayed for LH using the release of progesterone from fowl granulosa cells and for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) by measuring the release of thyroxine in 3-d-old chicks. Follicle stimulating hormone activity was measured either in a cockerel-testes radioreceptor assay or by the release of oestrogen from cultured rat Sertoli cells. 3. Fractions containing predominantly FSH or LH activity were isolated from the fowl glycoproteins. Duck gonadotrophin did not occur in fractions corresponding to those containing fowl FSH. 4. Duck gonadotrophin was found in a fraction corresponding with the most highly purified fowl LH fraction. A duck LH fraction was found with little FSH activity for which there was no corresponding fowl LH fraction. 5. It is concluded that domestic fowl and duck gonadotrophins have different chromatographic properties. Further study is required to determine whether the purified duck gonadotrophin preparation comprises proteins with similar physico-chemical properties but with separate FSH and LH biological activities.  相似文献

Normal nerve conduction velocity values in 10 ponies were determined for sensory nerve fibers in the median and ulnar nerves. A percutaneous signal-averaging technique was developed and used. Medial and lateral palmar digital nerves on the abaxial surface of the proximal sesamoid bones were used as the sites for percutaneous stimulation, whereas recording sites included the medial and lateral palmar nerves just distal to the carpus and the median and ulnar nerves in the middle of the radius. Sensory nerve conduction velocities can be evaluated simply and clinically in the limbs of horses, using percutaneous signal-averaging techniques.  相似文献

The histology of the lachrymal glands of the duck and fowl is similar. In both birds the gland is a compound tubulo-acinar structure, lobulated and invested by a thin connective tissue capsule. Foci of lymphocytes, but few plasma cells, are found in the glands. Moderately acidic mucosubstances predominate in the gland of the fowl whereas sialomucins are found in that of the duck. Neutral lipids were detected only in the gland of the fowl.  相似文献

1. Ovomucoids were purified from Muscovy duck, domestic duck and domestic goose.

2. Peptide maps of cyanogen bromide‐cleaved ovomucoids from Muscovy duck and domestic duck were very similar to one another, but differed from that of goose.

3. Muscovy duck ovomucoid showed the same protease inhibitory pattern as ovomucoid from domestic duck, inhibiting trypsin in the molar ratio of 1:2 and chymotrypsin 1:1.

4. Inhibitory complexes could be detected between chymotrypsin and ovomucoid from both Muscovy and domestic duck, but not from goose, by using non‐denaturing gels.

5. No complexes could be detected between DFP‐inactivated chymotrypsin and any of the ovomucoids.

6. The results show that of ovomucoid from Muscovy duck more closely resembles that from domestic duck than goose.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the spermatozoa of the domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos sp.) was analysed by transmission and scanning electron microscopies and compared with the results obtained in preliminary studies involving other non-passerine birds. The spermatozoa were characterised by the presence of a short head, short midpiece and long principal piece. The head consisted of a reduced acrosome that contained moderately electron-dense homogenous material. The implantation fossa was observed between the base of the nucleus and the proximal centriole. The midpiece contained electron-dense material associated with the proximal centriole and nuclear membrane, and a long distal centriole surrounded throughout its length by 11-12 elliptical mitochondria. A dense annulus separating the midpiece from the principal piece was visible. Posterior to the annulus, the axoneme was formed surrounded by a dense fibrous sheath, representing the principal piece or flagellum, which was a long segment with a smooth surface and a smaller diameter than the midpiece. The spermatozoon of the domestic duck resembles that of other non-passerine birds, corresponding to a basic type of spermatozoon similar to that of reptiles, called sauropsid type.  相似文献

The somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) from caudal tibial nerve stimulation was recorded in sheep, using surgically implanted electrodes. Peak latencies of the SEP remained stable throughout the 3- to 5-month recording period. Wave-form and peak latencies from awake sheep and concomitant changes during barbiturate anesthesia were compared with those reported for other animal species, including man. Wave form components representing activities from the primary somesthetic cortex, association cortex, and non-specific diffuse projections were differentially susceptible to barbiturate anesthesia. The neural source of the initial positive peak (mean latency = 19 ms) was resistant to anesthesia and represented primary somesthetic activity of the cortex. Sheep with surgically implanted electrodes yielded stable latencies with SEP wave-form features essentially homologous to those reported for other animal species.  相似文献

Duck viral enteritis (DVE) was diagnosed in an outbreak of the disease in a resident population of Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata domesticus) on a privately owned multispecies game bird production facility in Illinois, where it claimed 625 ducks. This disease condition had not been reported previously in domestic ducks in Illinois. Although other varieties and age groups of domestic waterfowl (i.e., black ducks, rhumen ducks, Pekin ducks, ducklings, and geese) were present on the game bird farm, the morbidity and mortality (100%) in this epornitic was solely limited to adult ducks of the Muscovy lineage. The clinical signs in the affected ducks were lethargy, diarrhea, dehydration, and death within 2-3 hr of onset of symptoms. Gross pathologic changes were nonspecific and included ecchymotic hemorrhage, effusion of fluid and blood within body cavities reflective of an acute systemic infectious disease. Light microscopic findings were necrosis of primarily digestive lining epithelium and variable lymphohistiocytic infiltration within mucosal and serosal connective tissues. Intranuclear inclusions resembling characteristic herpetic (i.e., Cowdry type A) inclusions were observed primarily in the digestive, respiratory, and reproductive tracts; liver; and spleen. Esophageal candidiasis, bacteriosis, and systemic Pasteurella anatipestifer infections, thought to be concurrent or opportunistic infections, were present in several ducks. DVE virus was demonstrated in infected Muscovy duck embryo fibroblast cells by direct DVE virus-specific fluorescent antibody staining.  相似文献

The duck growth hormone encoding gene and its promoter region were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 5.25 kb were cloned and sequenced. Duck growth hormone (GH) consists of five exons and four introns and is structurally similar to mammalian and chicken GH gene. Although the distal region of duck GH promoter showed no similarity to chicken and turkey promoters, the proximal region of the promoter contained two putative Pit‐1 binding sequences, and showed similarity to chicken and turkey GH promoters. Genetic variation was detected at five positions of the promoter region. The results of this study indicate that the expression of duck GH is likely regulated in a similar manner to that of chicken GH via enhancer‐type cis‐acting elements and the presence of genetic variation in the duck GH gene may be applicable to marker‐assisted selection.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Idiopathic headshaking is often a facial pain syndrome, but a diagnostic protocol has not been described. In a previous study, caudal compression of the infraorbital nerve for treatment offered a fair success rate, but low case numbers and short follow‐up time were limitations. Objectives: To describe a diagnostic protocol for headshaking, examining the role of bilateral local analgesia of the posterior ethmoidal nerve (PET block). To report longer‐term follow‐up after surgery of the original cases and further cases and to determine whether changes to the technique influence success rates and complications. Methods: Records of horses that had undergone PET block and caudal compression surgery at 3 hospitals were reviewed. Modifications to the surgical technique included placing additional coils into the infraorbital canal and/or performing concurrent laser cautery of the nerve. Follow‐up information was obtained by telephone contact with owners. Results: The PET block was performed in 27 horses, with a positive result in 23 of 27 (85%). Surgery was performed in 58 horses. A successful outcome was initially achieved in 35 of 57 (63%) horses, but recurrence occurred between 9 and 30 months later in 9 (26%). Surgery was repeated in 10 of 31 (32%) horses. Final success rate, considering only response to the last performed surgery, was 28 of 57 (49%) horses with median follow‐up time of 18 months (range 2–66 months). Nose‐rubbing was reported post operatively in 30 of 48 (63%) horses. This resolved in all but 4 horses, which were subjected to euthanasia. Response to PET block or change in surgical technique did not appear to influence outcome or complications. Conclusions and potential relevance: The diagnostic protocol described is recommended for the investigation of headshakers. Caudal compression offers the best prognosis for a successful outcome compared with other treatments, for horses in which the only alternative is euthanasia. Surgical treatment of the disorder requires refinement, and the pathogenesis of the disorder requires investigation.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo develop an ultrasound-guided cervical perineural injection technique for horses and to evaluate and compare the distribution of contrast agent among perineural, intra-articular and periarticular injections.Study designProspective, experimental cadaveric study.AnimalsA total of 14 equine cadaveric necks.MethodsBilateral ultrasound-guided perineural injection technique for the caudal cervical spinal nerve roots (CSNRs 5–7) was developed. Paramagnetic or iodinated contrast was injected and the distribution of contrast was evaluated using magnetic resonance (MR) or computed tomography (CT) imaging, respectively. The presence of contrast in the CSNR region was determined by an observer unaware of the technique used for each injection performed. The ability of the perineural injection technique to distribute contrast agent to the CSNR region was compared with intra-articular and periarticular injection techniques.ResultsPerineural injection delivered contrast agent to the CSNR region 100% of the time and was significantly different when compared with intra-articular injection (p = 0.008). There was no difference in ability to deliver contrast agent to the CSNR region between the perineural and periarticular injection techniques or between the intra-articular and periarticular injection techniques. Conclusion and clinical relevanceThe ultrasound-guided perineural injection technique developed in this study accurately delivered contrast agent to the CSNR region in equine cadavers. This technique could potentially be used for the diagnosis and treatment of cervical pain in horses, particularly in cases where intra-articular cervical articular process joint injections have not been beneficial. Further studies are necessary to assess the effectiveness of the ultrasound-guided perineural injection technique in live horses.  相似文献

Complementary DNA (cDNA) and the flanking region of insulin‐like growth factor‐I (IGF‐I) of domesticated duck were cloned. The nucleotide sequence analysis of the cDNA showed seven and eight bases different, respectively, from chicken and turkey IGF‐I cDNA within the coding region. The amino acid sequence of prepro IGF‐I differed by one and two amino acids from those observed in chicken and turkey, respectively. However, no amino acid substitution was observed in the mature IGF‐I region. Sequence analysis of the promoter region and exon 1 of the duck IGF‐I revealed a high degree of similarity to that of the chicken IGF‐I gene. These results suggest that the mechanisms which regulate expression of the IGF‐I gene may be widely conserved in avian species.  相似文献
