The objectives of this study were to determine the associations of breed, age, and scrotal circumference (SC), and their interaction, on the prevalence of sperm abnormalities in beef bulls in Alberta, Canada, and the percentage of satisfactory potential breeders identified during breeding soundness examination solely due to normal sperm morphology. Eosin-nigrosin stained semen smears and evaluation reports of 1642 bull breeding soundness evaluations were procured from 6 veterinary clinics in Alberta. Sperm morphology was determined for at least 100 sperm per bull. The most common defects were detached head [4.86% ± 5.71%; mean ± standard deviation (s)], distal midpiece reflex (6.19% ± 9.13%), and bent tail (1.01% ± 1.54%). Although breed, age, and SC did not significantly affect the prevalence of head or midpiece defects, morphologically normal or abnormal sperm, tail defects were more prevalent in Angus and Hereford bulls compared with other breeds. Overall, solely on the basis of sperm morphology, 1363 (83.0%) bulls were classified as satisfactory potential breeders and the remainder 279 (17.0%) as unsatisfactory (> 30% abnormal sperm, > 20% defective heads, or both). Although not significantly different, the breed with the highest percentage of satisfactory potential breeders was Limousin (90.6%) and the lowest was Hereford (78.8%). That 17% of bulls subjected to breeding soundness evaluation were designated as unsatisfactory solely on the basis of sperm morphology highlights its importance.  相似文献

The effect of age and body weight on scrotal circumference (SC), the effect of SC on percentage of sperm abnormalities and seminal characteristics, and the relationship of SC with testicular weight, epididymidal weight, degree of germinal epithelial loss (DGEL), and percentage of tubules graded 4 or greater (G4+) were studied in 37 Angus bulls. All bulls were from one herd and were examined at monthly intervals, during a 140-day weight gain test starting when they were 11 months old. The study was terminated when the bulls were slaughtered at 14 months of age. As age and body weight increased, SC increased (P less than 0.001). The incidence of sperm abnormalities decreased (P less than 0.001) as SC increased; however, seminal characteristics remained poor in bulls with SC less than or equal to 32 cm. Pathologic changes in 600 cross sections of seminiferous tubules from each bull were classified into 9 grades. The DGEL per 100 tubules was calculated by assigning a value to each grade according to the severity of loss of germinal epithelium. Tubules classified as G4+ were devoid of germinal cells and provided an index of irreversible loss of germinal epithelium. The SC was correlated positively with testicular weight (r = 0.91, P less than 0.001) and epididymal weight (r = 0.59, P less than 0.001) and negatively with DGEL (r = -0.48, P less than 0.01) and G4+ (r = -0.44, P less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Breeding soundness examinations (BSE) were performed on 327 bulls at three locations in Wyoming and Montana. Scrotal circumference (SC), scrotal volume (SV), and body condition score (BCS) data were also collected. The animals were classified as yearlings, 2-yr-olds, or mature bulls. Age class and BCS had significant (P<0.01) effects on SC. Age class also accounted for significant (P<0.01) variation in SV. The correlation between SC and SV was 0.88. Scrotal circumference, SV, and pelvic area (PA) were measured and adjusted for age on the 139 yearling bulls at Location 1 (MT) to allow comparison with other age-adjusted traits. The linear regression of SC on age was 0.023 cm/d (P<0.05). Scrotal circumference and age were significant (P<0.01) sources of variation for the percentage of motile sperm (MOT). Composite yearling bulls had larger (P<0.05) adjusted SV, adjusted SC, pelvic height (PH), and percentage of MOT than Red Angus yearling bulls. The simple correlation between adjusted SC and adjusted yearling BW was 0.33 (P<0.05). Actual SC and SV were positively correlated with actual BW, actual hip height (HH), and percentage of MOT. Scrotal volume and percentage of MOT were positively correlated (0.22) (P<0.05). Our results indicate that SV could be used interchangeably with SC as a measure of sperm- producing capacity in beef bulls. Results of this study indicate that selecting bulls with larger SC or SV should result in increased yearling BW, greater PA, and bulls with improved fertility.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the breeding soundness examination procedure in plains bison bulls. DESIGN: Multiyear (1993 through 1997) cross-sectional clinical procedure evaluation. ANIMALS: Two hundred thirty-four 28- to 30-month-old bison bulls at Custer State Park. PROCEDURE: Breeding soundness examinations were performed on all bison bulls using 1992 Society for Theriogenology guidelines for beef cattle semen evaluation and reproductive tract examination. Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to detect correlations and associations among breeding soundness examination variables. RESULTS: Scrotal circumference (SC) was significantly correlated with body weight, percentage of normal spermatozoa, percentage of primary spermatozoal defects, and percentage of motile spermatozoa. Scrotal circumference was positively associated with increased odds of semen collection, satisfactory motility (> or = 30% motility), satisfactory morphology (> or = 70% normal spermatozoa), and simultaneous satisfactory motility and morphology. Receiver-operator characteristic curve analysis selected 29 cm as the optimal SC cutoff most predictive of simultaneous satisfactory spermatozoal motility and morphology. Only 36.2% (83/229) of the bison bulls had a SC of 29 cm or greater and satisfactory spermatozoal motility and morphology. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: SC is a good indicator of adequate spermatozoal motility and structure in bison. We recommend use of 30% spermatozoal motility, 70% normal spermatozoal morphology, and 29-cm SC as minimal satisfactory measurements for breeding soundness examinations of 28- to 30-month-old bison bulls that have been raised on forage-based nutrition.  相似文献

Data on breeding soundness examinations (BSE) and performance traits were obtained on 549 yearling beef bulls at the San Juan Basin Research Center, Hesperus, Co from 1976 to 1984. Genetic parameters estimated for components of BSE included percent motility (PMOT), percent primary abnormalities (PPRIM), percent secondary abnormalities (PSEC), percent normal sperm (PNOR), scrotal circumference (SC) and BSE score (BSESC). Performance traits included birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and average daily gain. The least squares model included birth year, age of dam and breed as fixed effects, sire/breed as a random variable, and age and percent inbreeding as covariates. Paternal half-sib estimates of heritability were PMOT, .08 +/- .07; PPRIM, .31 +/- .09; PSEC, .02 +/- .05; PNOR, .07 +/- .06; BSESC, .10 +/- .06 and SC, .40 +/- .09. Phenotypic correlations among BSE components and growth traits were generally favorable. Genetic correlations involving percent secondary abnormalities were highly variable with large standard errors. Seminal traits improved as age increased and became poorer as inbreeding increased.  相似文献

Sixteen (mean age = 1.1 +/- 0.1 yr; mean BW = 478 +/- 34 kg) Brahman-influenced bulls were used to determine the influence of fescue type on sperm characteristics and serum concentrations of prolactin, cortisol, and testosterone. Bulls were blocked by BW, scrotal circumference (SC), and pregrazing sperm characteristics and randomly assigned to graze toxic endophyte-infected (EI; 4 bulls/pasture; 2 pastures) or novel endophyte-infected (NE; 4 bulls/pasture; 2 pastures) tall fescue for 121 d. Semen was collected by electroejaculation, and SC was measured and blood samples collected monthly. Sperm were evaluated for motility and morphology with an integrated visual optical system. Overall mean concentration of prolactin was decreased more (P < 0.01) in EI bulls than NE bulls from May to August. Scrotal circumference was not affected by fescue type (P = 0.58); overall SC averaged 36.7 +/- 2.3 cm. Percentage of live sperm was not different (P = 0.24) between NE bulls (80%) than EI bulls (67%) in July and August. Bulls grazing NE fescue had more (P < 0.06) motile sperm than EI bulls in July and August. Percentages of progressive (57 vs. 38%, NE and EI, respectively; P < 0.06) and rapid (67 vs. 46%, NE and EI, respectively; P = 0.04) sperm were greater from bulls grazing NE than EI bulls in July and August. Average velocity of the smoothed sperm path and progressive velocity in a straight line from the beginning to the end of the sperm track were slower (P < 0.09) in EI bulls than NE bulls and were slower (P = 0.04) in August compared with July. Mean width of head oscillation as the sperm swims was less (P < 0.06) in August than July. Concentrations of cortisol and testosterone were not (P > 0.10) influenced by fescue type. Semen from bulls grazing EI had reduced motility and morphology than bulls grazing NE. Detrimental effects of toxic fescue may not be mediated by cortisol, testosterone, or both. Semen quality of bulls grazing toxic EI tall fescue was decreased with increased maximum ambient temperatures.  相似文献

Six Holstein (light-muscled type) and six Belgian Blue bulls (double-muscled type) were fed a finishing diet. Average daily gain was 1.36 kg for the Holstein bulls vs 1.24 kg for the Belgian Blue bulls (P less than .05). Holstein bulls consumed more feed (2.3 vs 1.8 kg/100 kg body weight, P less than .001) than the Belgian Blue bulls. The dressing percentage (55.4 vs 65.8%, P less than .001) and the proportion of muscle (56.1 vs 71.3%, P less than .001) in the carcass were less, whereas the proportions of adipose tissue (28.3 vs 15.4%, P less than .001) and bone (15.7 vs 13.4%, P less than .05) were higher in the Holstein bulls. Plasma creatinine determined in samples obtained once a week was lower (11.0 vs 20.3 mg/liter, P less than .001) in the Holstein bulls. In contrast, Holstein bulls tended to produce more triiodothyronine (2.3 vs 1.8 nM, P less than .10), tetraiodothyronine (71.9 vs 54.7 nM, P less than .10) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I; 340 vs 205 ng/ml, P less than .20) than the Belgian Blue bulls. Growth hormone, insulin, IGF-I and testosterone were measured at 20-min intervals during two 24-h periods. In wk 6, Holstein bulls tended to produce more growth hormone than the Belgian Blues, as indicated by higher total peak area (3,185 vs 2,431 ng), peak amplitude (34.1 vs 22.6 ng/ml, P less than .10) and baseline (4.6 vs 3.3 ng/ml, P less than .20). Data from 34 yearling Hereford or Angus bulls were used to investigate relationships of testicular size, quantitative rates of sperm production, Sertoli cell numbers, numbers of germ cells supported per Sertoli cell, and the efficiency of spermatogenesis to daily sperm output and seminal quality. Two ejaculates were collected by electroejaculation from each bull on each of 2 days/week throughout the study. The percentage of progressively motile sperm and the percentage of morphologically normal sperm were determined from aliquots of fresh semen. Additional aliquots of semen were frozen in glass ampules or plastic straws and subsequently evaluated for postthaw motility and percentage of sperm with intact acrosomes. Sertoli cell numbers, the numbers of germ-cells per Sertoli cell, and the efficiency of spermatogenesis were unrelated to the quality of fresh or frozen semen (P greater than 0.05). In first ejaculates, the numbers of sperm and motile sperm were related (P less than 0.05) to testicular parenchymal weight (r = 0.38 and 0.50), daily sperm production (r = 0.45 and 0.53), and spermatids per gram of testicular parenchyma (r = 0.35 and 0.34). Testicular parenchymal weight and daily sperm production also were related to daily sperm output and to the average daily motile sperm output of these bulls (P less than 0.05), but could account for less than 25% of the variability in these end points among bulls.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the effect of serving capacity (SC) on sexual behavior of yearling bulls during single- and double-sire pasture matings. Approximately 60 crossbred virgin bulls were subjected to 3 SC tests, and 20 bulls were selected that were similar in age, BW, testes size and semen quality. Ten bulls were high SC (greater than or equal to 3 services/test) and 10 bulls were low SC (less than or equal to 2 services/test). Competitive order among the 20 bulls also was determined. Single-sire tests were conducted with 15 intact estrual heifers and 1 bull in a pasture for 6 h. Double-sire tests were conducted with 30 estrus-induced, ovariectomized heifers and 1 high SC and 1 low SC bull of approximately equal competitive order for 6 h. Bulls in double-sire tests had more (P less than .007) mounts than those in single-sire tests. High SC bulls in double-sire tests served more heifers (P less than .04) and had more services (P less than .04) than any other SC group and test type. There was no difference (P greater than .10) in the number of mounts or services between high and low SC bulls in single-sire tests. High SC bulls had a greater (P less than .002) percentage of mounts that culminated in a service that did low SC bulls. Two hundred and fifty-one Aberdeen Angus, Horned Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Charolais bulls were examined at the time of sale (sale) and again from 10 to 85 days later (test) to determine the effect of amount of body fat and loss of fat on semen quality. Sale and test measurements included body weight, backfat depth, and scrotal circumference. Breeding soundness evaluations were done at test. For all bulls, over all years, the positive correlations of body weight loss vs. backfat loss, weight loss vs. scrotal circumference loss, and backfat loss vs. scrotal circumference loss were highly significant. Aberdeen Angus, Horned Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Charolais bulls lost weight at a mean rate of 1.77, 2.19, 1.94, 1.16 kg per day, respectively, in the interval from sale to test. Bulls classified as unsatisfactory lost significantly more weight than satisfactory bulls. However, bulls classified as unsatisfactory did not differ significantly from satisfactory bulls in the amount of backfat at sale and test and in the amount of backfat lost. No significant relationship could be demonstrated between increments of backfat and classifications of breeding soundness evaluations. Bulls with satisfactory semen quality had significantly larger scrotal circumference measurements than those with questionable or unsatisfactory classifications. Backfat data at bull sales may be helpful in selecting bulls with desirable growth characteristics, as well as reducing the risk of purchasing bulls with poor semen quality due to excessive body fat.  相似文献

There is concern in the beef industry that selecting bulls for feed efficiency based on residual feed intake (RFI) may have a negative impact on bull reproductive performance and fertility. Here we investigated the impact of selection of bulls for low RFI on breeding soundness evaluation (BSE), reproductive performance, and fertility of bulls under natural service in multisire mating groups on pasture. Of the 412 RFI-tested bulls available, 98 (23.8%) were culled for performance, type, temperament, or other reasons, and 88 (21.4%) were culled for failing BSE, for an overall cull rate of 45.1%. From among the 314 bulls subjected to BSE, 32 (10.2%), 20 (6.4%), and 36 (11.4%) were culled for poor feet and legs, scrotal circumference, and semen quality, respectively. The BSE traits were not different (P > 0.10) between bulls categorized as either inefficient (+RFI) or efficient (-RFI), but the proportion of bulls that failed to meet the 60% minimum sperm motility requirement tended (P = 0.07) to be greater in the -RFI group than in the +RFI group (10.2% vs. 4.4%, respectively). In a subpopulation of 115 bulls, individual progressive sperm motility was greater (P < 0.05) in +RFI (85%) than -RFI (80%) bulls. A multisire natural mating experiment was conducted during 2 consecutive breeding seasons (2006 to 2007 and 2007 to 2008) using 18 +RFI and 18 -RFI bulls. The overall calving rate (calves born/cows exposed) was 72.9%. Mean number of progeny per sire was significantly greater (P < 0.01) in -RFI bulls (18.3) than in +RFI bulls (11.8). Selection for feed efficiency based on RFI appears to have no detrimental impact on reproductive performance and fertility in beef bulls bred in multisire groups on pasture. However, the decreased sperm motility and the greater number of progeny per sire associated with -RFI status need further investigation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to estimate the heritability of scrotal circumference (SC) and semen traits, genetic correlations between SC and semen quality traits, and the effect of cytoplasmic line on SC and semen traits. Breeding soundness exam (BSE) data were collected on registered Angus bulls at 4 ranches over 7 yr. The American Angus Association provided historical pedigree information to estimate the effect of cytoplasmic line on SC and semen quality traits. After editing, the evaluated data set contained 1,281 bulls with breeding soundness exam data that traced back to 100 founder dams. Data were analyzed using a 2-trait animal model to obtain heritability, genetic correlation between SC and semen quality traits, as well as the effect of cytoplasmic line as a random effect for SC, percent motility (MOT), percent primary abnormalities (PRIM), percent secondary abnormalities (SEC), and percent total abnormalities (TOT) using multiple-trait derivative-free REML. Fixed effects included source ranch and collection year, and test age was used as a covariate. Estimates of heritability for SC, MOT, PRIM, SEC, and TOT were 0.46, 0.05, 0.27, 0.23, and 0.25, respectively. Genetic correlations between SC and MOT, PRIM, SEC, and TOT were 0.36, -0.19, -0.11, and -0.23, respectively. The proportions of phenotypic variance accounted for by cytoplasmic line for SC, MOT, PRIM, SEC, and TOT were <0.001, 0.013, 0.023, 0.002, and <0.001, respectively. Genetic correlations between SC and semen quality traits were low to moderate and favorable. Cytoplasmic line may have a marginal effect on MOT and PRIM, but is likely not a significant source of variation for SC, SEC, or TOT.  相似文献

To determine the effects of location and season on growth of bulls, Hereford bulls from Montana (MH; n = 15) and Nebraska (NH; n = 15) and Brahman bulls from Texas and Louisiana (BB; n = 18) were moved to three locations: Montana (MT), Nebraska (NE) or Texas (TX). Each location received 5 NH, 5 MH and 6 BB. Control bulls (not relocated) were maintained at each location. All bulls were pubertal at the time of relocation in May 1984. At 28-d intervals, body weight, hip height, testis length and scrotal circumference were recorded for each bull for 22 mo after relocation. Paired testes volume (PTV) was calculated. Among Hereford bulls, body weights were similar (P greater than .10) in all control and relocated bulls by the end of the study, except that MH bulls moved to TX had lower body weights (P less than .01). Brahman bulls moved to northern locations had dramatically reduced body weights, compared to control Brahmans kept in TX; body weight of Brahman bulls in MT remained lower (P less than .01) at the end of the study. Brahman bulls in NE and MT had smaller scrotal circumference and PTV (P less than .01) than did control Brahmans in TX during the 1st yr after relocation. Relocated BB exhibited marked seasonal fluctuations in testis size, with increases during the summer and decreases during the winter (P less than .01); seasonal changes were not apparent in control Brahmans in TX. These results indicate that moving Brahman bulls to northern environments reduced body weight gain and caused dramatic seasonal changes in testis size; these effects were more pronounced in Brahman bulls moved to the most northern location.  相似文献

Sixteen yearling Angus bulls were randomly assigned to one of two temperature-controlled chambers to determine the effects of elevated ambient temperature on body functions and semen characteristics. After 8 wk adjustment at 23 C, eight heat-stressed bulls were exposed to 35 +/- 1 C for 8 h and 31 +/- 1 C for 16 h during each 24-h period, and eight control bulls were maintained at 23 +/- 1 C for 8 wk. Then all bulls were exposed to 23 C for 8 wk. Bulls were fed so that both control and stressed bulls gained at similar rates (.58 kg/d). Semen was collected with an artificial vagina twice weekly before, during and after heat stress. During treatment, the respiratory rate of stressed bulls was greater (P less than .001) than that of control bulls (54.2 +/- 1.5, 29.9 +/- 1.5 breaths/min, respectively). Rectal temperatures were increased (P less than .01) from 38.2 +/- .1 to 38.7 +/- .1 C and water consumption was increased by 35% in stressed bulls when compared with controls. Semen volume was not altered by treatment, but percentage of motile sperm decreased (P less than .01) in stressed bulls by 2 wk after the start of heat treatment. Sperm motility of stressed bulls returned to normal values 8 wk after the end of heat treatment. Sperm morphology was studied in 302 extensively managed Zebu bulls (aged 1.5–9 years), classified as sound (n=166) or unsound (n=136) for breeding, under field conditions in the dry tropics of Costa Rica. Single semen samples were collected by electro‐ejaculation and fixed in formol‐saline solution immediately after collection. Sperm morphology was determined in the field on wet smears using a microscope equipped with phase‐contrast optics, and further determined in the laboratory on air‐dried smears stained with carbol‐fuchsin. The frequencies of sperm abnormalities (such as abnormal acrosome, head, neck, mid‐piece, tail, and presence of cytoplasmic droplets) were recorded as a percentage of the total number of counted spermatozoa (400 cells). Zebu bulls considered unsound for breeding showed a higher mean prevalence (p < 0.05) of knobbed acrosomes (4.0 versus 0.9%), head defects [specifically, nuclear invaginations and heads with abnormal shapes and sizes (27.6 versus 4.0%)], abnormal tails (11.2 versus 4.7%), and proximal droplets (8.4 versus 1.6%), compared with bulls considered sound for breeding. In these latter bulls, the abnormality most commonly seen was the presence of single bent tails with an entrapped cytoplasmic droplet (3.0 ± 3.7%). Young Zebu bulls (i.e. bulls under 2 years of age) showed a higher percentage of missing acrosomes, and proximal cytoplasmic droplets, than older sires (12.1 versus 2.4%, and 23.9 versus 3.6%, respectively; p < 0.05), interpreted as an indication of low ejaculation frequency and sexual immaturity, respectively. Bulls with a long scrotum and soft testicular consistency (TC) at palpation showed higher percentages of abnormal sperm heads in the ejaculate than bulls with a normal scrotal length (SL) and a normal TC (32.7 versus 12.8% and 30.7 versus 10.3%, respectively; p < 0.05). In addition, Zebu bulls with a scrotal circumference (SC) ≤ 30 cm showed a higher prevalence of proximal cytoplasmic droplets than bulls whose SC was > 30 cm (9.8 versus 2.6%, p < 0.05). A higher mean percentage of abnormally sized and shaped heads, especially undeveloped and narrow at the base, was more frequently found in stained smears than in unstained samples (26.0 versus 9.9%, p < 0.05), which clearly underlines the importance of using both stained and wet smears when assessing sperm head morphology. However, for a quick assessment of sperm morphology under field, tropical conditions, phase‐contrast microscopy provides useful information for the spermiogramme evaluation.  相似文献

Eighty crossbred, virgin, yearling beef bulls were subjected to three serving capacity (SC) tests. Ten low SC (LSC) and 10 high SC (HSC) bulls similar in weight (avg wt = 452 kg), testicular size and seminal traits but differing in average services were selected. Objectives were to evaluate the mating behavior and fertility of LSC and HSC bulls at pasture when exposed to an average and a heavy mating load and to determine the effect of sexual activity on body weight and testicular characteristics. One LSC and one HSC bull per block were exposed single-sire to 25 naturally cyclic (N) cows for 3 d and to 9 estrus-synchronized (S) cows for 1 d in a randomized complete block design consisting of 10, 4-d blocks. Bulls were fitted with pedometers to record distance travelled. Behavioral data were collected by periodic visual observation. During the N cow treatment, LSC bulls had fewer (P less than .05) services per cow, total services and a higher mount to service ratio than HSC bulls. During the S cow treatment, LSC bulls showed increased sexual activity, though they achieved fewer (P less than .09) services per cow. Pregnancy rates for LSC and HSC bulls did not differ (P greater than .20) and across SC groups averaged 53.6% for N cows and 31.9% for S cows. Distance travelled also was similar (P greater than .20) between SC groups for both treatments. Sexual activity during pasture exposure had no effect (P greater than .20) on testicular characteristics but resulted in an average decline in body weight of 25.7 kg across SC groups during the 4-d period. Post-exposure SC tests found that LSC bulls had increased (P less than .05) services, decreased mounts and mount to service ratio compared to pre-exposure measurements, but LSC were still lower (P = .06) than HSC bulls for average services. These results suggest that LSC virgin, yearling bulls should be offered sexual experience and retested before their inherent SC can be determined.  相似文献

Twelve Brahman bulls (paired by sire, weight and age) were assigned randomly and limit fed to gain either .10 to .25 (moderate gain; MG) or .75 to 1.0 (high gain: HG) kg.hd-1.d-1 to examine the effect of dietary energy on onset of puberty. Hip height (HH), scrotal circumference (SC) and serum samples (20 min for 6 h) were obtained at four times (AGE): 0, 56 and 112 d on feed and after appearance of first motile spermatozoa (FS) in the ejaculate of HG bull of the pair. At FS both bulls of a pair were slaughtered, reproductive tissues were collected and in vitro GnRH release from the median eminence (ME) was measured. Increases in BW, HH and SC were greater (P less than .05) in HG bulls. Basal ME GnRH secretion was greater (P less than .05) in HG bulls. Serum LH concentrations were unchanged by energy level (P greater than .10) but increased (P less than .01) with increasing AGE. AGE and energy level increased (P less than .01) basal, mean and total serum testosterone (T) and these two factors acted synergistically (P less than .01). Height and amplitude of T pulses were increased by energy level (P less than .003) and AGE (P less than .002). Testicular T (P less than .08) and development (P less than .05) were increased in HG bulls. Growth hormone peak height and amplitude concentrations following feeding increased with AGE (P less than .06) but were not altered (P greater than .10) by energy level. Serum triglycerides (P less than .03) and BUN (P less than .003) increased with increasing AGE (P greater than .01). These data indicate that dietary energy level influences onset of puberty most directly at the testicular level.  相似文献

Angus bulls (n = 24) were selected for either high or low milk EPD, but with similar growth EPD and mated within location (n = 6) at random to Angus cows. Daughters from these matings were bred to calve first at 2 yr of age to common reference sires across locations. Lactation records for 192 daughters were used to evaluate 12-h milk yield, percentage of milk fat and protein, and weaning weight of offspring. Milk production was measured four times during the lactation at regular intervals within location. Dams were separated from their calves the night before milking and milked with a portable milking machine the next morning to estimate 12-h milk yield. A sample of the milk was collected from each cow and analyzed for percentages of milk fat and protein. Data were analyzed as repeated records of the dam. Fixed effects were location, genetic line of sire, gender of calf within location, and milking period, with postpartum interval used as a covariate. Fixed effects and the random effects of sire of dam nested within line, sire of calf, and year were estimated by REML. Genetic line was an important source of variation for milk yield (P < 0.01) and percentage of milk fat (P = 0.03) but not for percentage of milk protein (P = 0.49). Location was significant for all three milk variables (P < 0.01), but the interactions between line and location were not significant. Gender of calf was significant for milk yield (P = 0.04) but not for percentage of milk fat or protein. Line (P = 0.02), location (P = 0.01), calf gender (P = 0.01), and age at weaning (P = 0.01) were significant sources of variation for weaning weight but the interaction of line and location was not (P = 0.69). The correlation coefficient between the sire's milk EPD and 12-h milk yield was significantly different from zero (r = 0.56). The difference between the least squares means for high and low lines for milk yield was 0.66 kg/12 h and the difference was 15.3 kg for weaning weight. The results indicate that there was not evidence for a genotype by environment interaction in milk production for daughters from divergent sires selected for high or low milk EPD.  相似文献

The predictability of semen quality of mature sires from measurements at an early age is not well established. The aim of the present study was to determine age-dependent changes in the quality of bull semen from six Estonian Holstein (EHF) bulls, processed when the sires were 3, 5 and 7 years old. Fertility data such as 60-day non-return to oestrus rates (60d-NRRs) were available for 3-year-old bulls. From each batch, semen straws were analysed immediately after thawing [i.e. post-thaw (PT)] (controls) and after a swim-up (SU) procedure. The analyses comprised subjective and computerized measurements of sperm motility using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) as well as estimations of sperm concentration, morphology and membrane integrity. There was a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the percentage of sperm motility (SU), membrane integrity (PT, SU) and normal tail and acrosome morphology (SU) with an increase in the age of the sires. The percentage of total motile spermatozoa PT measured by CASA correlated between 3- and 7-, and between 5- and 7-year-old bulls (p < 0.05). In addition, the proportion of head abnormalities tended to correlate between all three age groups both PT and after SU (p < 0.1). The sperm parameters correlating with fertility were average path velocity (VAP) (p < 0.001), total motility as measured by CASA (p < 0.01), linearly motile spermatozoa (p < 0.05) and CASA-assessed numbers of motile spermatozoa (p < 0.05), all after SU selection. The results showed that overall semen quality examined at 3 years of age is related to the semen parameters later in bulls' life. Moreover, CASA-assessed motility after SU seems to be a reliable marker for semen quality assessment as it shows correlation not only between the ages, but also to field fertility.  相似文献

Postweaning growth, sexual development, libido, and carcass data were collected from two consecutive calf crops using 31 Brahman x Angus (B x A), 41 Senepol x Angus (S x A), and 38 Tuli x Angus (T x A) F1 bulls. Following weaning (by mid-September) and preconditioning, at the start of the study (late September) bulls were fed concentrate (three times each week at a rate equivalent to 4.5 kg/d) on bahiagrass pasture for approximately 250 d. At the start of the study and at 28-d intervals, BW, hip height, and scrotal circumference (SC) were measured. Concurrently at 28-d intervals, when the SC of a bull was > or = 23 cm, semen collection was attempted using electroejaculation. Ejaculates were evaluated for presence of first spermatozoa (FS), 50 x 10(6) sperm with at least 10% motility (PU), and 500 x 10(6) sperm with at least 50% motility (PP). After all bulls reached PP they were subjected to two libido tests. Carcass data were collected on all bulls (n = 110) and Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) force values were assessed on a subset (n = 80). For both years, B x A bulls were heavier (P < 0.05) and taller (P < 0.05) than S x A and T x A bulls at the start and end of the study. However, breed type did not influence (P > 0.10) gain in BW or hip height during the study. Scrotal circumference of T x A bulls was larger (P < 0.05) than that of B x A or S x A bulls at the start of the study, but there was no effect (P > 0.10) of breed type by the end of the study. At PU and PP, B x A bulls were older (P < 0.05), heavier (P < 0.05), and taller (P < 0.05) and had larger (P < 0.05) SC than S x A and T x A bulls. Tuli x Angus bulls were younger (P < 0.05) than S x A bulls at PU and PP but had similar SC. Libido scores tended (P < 0.10) to be lower for B x A than for S x A and T x A bulls. Breed type affected (P < 0.05) carcass traits; B x A bulls had the heaviest (P < 0.05) hot carcass weight, greatest (P < 0.05) dressing percentage, larger (P < 0.05) longissimus muscle area than S x A bulls, and higher (P < 0.05) USDA yield grade than T x A bulls but greatest (P < 0.05) WBS force values. Breed type did not affect (P > 0.10) USDA quality grade. In conclusion, tropically adapted F1 bulls produced from Senepol (Bos taurus) and Tuli (Sanga) sires bred to Angus cows in Florida had lighter BW, shorter hip heights, and smaller carcasses than those from Brahman sires but reached puberty earlier and had higher libido scores and lower WBS force values.  相似文献
