  • ? Both burning and harvesting cause carbon and nutrient removals from forest ecosystems, but few studies have addressed the combination of these effects. For a Pinus jeffreyii forest in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, we posed the question: what are the relative impacts of thinning and subsequent burning on carbon and nutrient removals?
  • ? The thinning methods included whole-tree thinning (WT, where all aboveground biomass was removed) cut to length (CTL, where branches and foliage were left on site in a slash mat on top of skid trails) and no harvest (CONT). Total C and nutrient exports with thinning and burning were greater in the WT and CTL than in the CONT treatments. Total C and N removals were approximately equal for the WT and CTL treatments, although harvesting dominated exports in the WT treatment and burning dominated exports in the CTL treatment. Total removals of P, K, Ca, Mg and S were greatest in the WT treatments, where harvesting dominated removals.
  • ? Comparisons of nutrient removals with ecosystem capital and calculations of potential replenishment by atmospheric deposition suggested that N is the nutrient likely to be most depleted by harvesting and burning treatments.

BSP.) and tamarack (Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) seedlings fertilized with labeled (15NH4)2SO4 or K15NO3 in a growth chamber experiment.
  • ? Flooding reduced photosynthesis (A), transpiration (E), water use efficiency (WUE), and current uptake of NH 4 + and NO 3 ? in both species.
  • ? Under flooding, there were no significant differences between the two species in uptake of either NH 4 + or NO 3 ? at the whole-plant level but black spruce had higher translocation of NH 4 + to the shoots than did tamarack.

Under non-flooded conditions, black spruce seedlings exhibited higher uptake of both NH 4 + and NO 3 ? than did tamarack and demonstrated preferential uptake of NH 4 + (19. 7 mg g?1dw) over NO 3 ?   • ? Woody encroachment into grasslands is a worldwide phenomenon. In the Pyrenees, fire has been used as a management tool to transform part of the encroached land to grassland.
  • ? This study aims to compare the spatial patterns of shrub cover 4 y after 4 different fire disturbances (prescribed burning, repeated prescribed burning, wildfire in 20 year-old shrubs and wildfire in 5 year-old shrubs); and also to compare shrub cover after different fire disturbances, accounting for spatial autocorrelation. The study focuses on the shrub Cytisus balansae. Two-dimensional transects (20 × 0.5 m) were established to monitor shrub cover for 4 y after each disturbance type. Autoregressive models and Markov models were used with a Monte Carlo procedure to account for the presence of spatial autocorrelation.
  • ? Shrub cover was greater after prescribed burning than after repeated prescribed burning, and it increased with shrub age before disturbance. Differences in spatial patterns were detected in shrub patch size, with repeated prescribed fires and wildfires reducing shrub patch size by half in comparison with prescribed burning.
  • ? From the management point of view, the effects of repeated prescribed burning were similar to those of a wildfire on reducing shrub cover and shrub patch size.

  • ? Chestnut stands (Castanea sativa Mill.) for fruit production, in Northern Portugal, are subjected to frequent soil tillage operations, which is considered a threat for the system sustainability.

The effects of replacement of conventional tillage by the no-tillage system in chestnut stands on decomposition and nutrient dynamics of leaf litter and burs were evaluated, using the litterbag methodology. Amounts of mass and nutrients in the organic layers, and chemical characteristics of the 0–20 cm top soil layer were assessed after eight years.
  • ? The mass loss and release of N, P, Ca and Mg from both leaves and burs buried in the soil were faster than from those placed on the soil surface. Burs decomposed and released nutrients more slowly than leaf litter. The no-tillage system led to the formation of organic layers, which retained great amounts of N (249.2 kg ha?1) and Ca (215.5 kg ha?1). Such a management system increased the concentration of organic C and nutrients in the 0–5 cm top soil layer, but significant differences were only observed for exchangeable Ca.

The short-term effect of organic residue management on the growth and nutrition of Pinus pinaster Ait. seedlings, and on nutrient leaching and chemical properties of an acid soil was assessed through a lysimeter experiment. Treatments included absence, placement on the soil surface, and incorporation into the soil (with and without legume cover cropping) of organic residues (forest floor litter or forest floor litter plus harvest residues).
  • ? Residues placed on the soil surface enhanced seedling growth. Organic residues reduced nutrient losses (NO 3 ? , Ca and Mg) and resulted in nutrient accumulation in the soil. Harvest residues positively affected K seedling nutrition status and enhanced K soil accumulation.

  • ? Growing concerns about fires and the increase of fire frequency and severity due to climate change have stimulated a large number of scientific papers about fire ecology. Most researchers have focused on the short-term effects of fire, and the knowledge about the long-term consequences of fires on ecosystem nutrient dynamics is still scarce.
  • ? Our aim was to improve the existing knowledge about the long-term effects of wildfires on forestlabile N concentrations. We hypothesized that fires may cause an initial decline in organic and inorganic N availability, and in the amount of microbial biomass-N; this should be followed by the recovery of pre-fire N concentrations on a long-term basis. We selected a fire chronosequence in Pinus canariensis forests on La Palma Island (Canary Islands, Spain). These forests are under low anthropogenic atmospheric deposition, and forest management is completely lacking; wildfires are therefore the only significant disturbance. Soil samples were collected during the winter and spring at 22 burned and unburned plots.
  • ? Fire produced a significant decrease in microbial biomass N, mineral N and dissolved organic N. Almost 20 y after fire, pre-fire levels of N concentrations had not recovered.
  • ? These results demonstrate that P. canariensis forest soils have a lower resilience against fire than expected. The magnitude of these observed changes suggests that pine forest wildfires may induce long-term (2 decades) changes in soil and in plant primary production.

  • ? The effect of nitrogen (N) deposition on the decomposition of pine (Pinus massoniana) needles in a tropical pine plantation was studied. The pine needles with two different nutrient status (nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor) were used, followed by 3-levels of N treatments (Control: no N addition, Low- N: 5 g N m?2 y?1, and Medium-N: 10 g N m?2 y?1 experimental inputs), which had been applied for 26 months continuously before this experiment and continued throughout the decomposition measurement.
  • ? The main objective was to test the hypothesis that decomposition of nutrient-rich needles would be more sensitive to cumulative N deposition than the decomposition of nutrient-poor needles.
  • ? Nitrogen addition had negative effect on mass loss, and the release of N and P from decomposing nutrient-rich needles but little or no effect on the decomposition of nutrient-poor needles. In addition, a negative effect in the initial decomposition phase and a positive effect in later decay stages were found on C release. The negative effect was stronger on nutrient-rich needles than on nutrient-poor needles, but the reverse was true for the positive effect.

  • ? Eight-year old trees from two Eucalyptus globulus Labill. clones planted across three different sites in Tasmania, Australia, were sampled for wood and kraft pulp/handsheet properties.
  • ? Site had a significant effect on all measured properties. Compared with the poor site (Parkham) the wood from the good site (West Ridgley) had on average 11 % lower wood density. The poor site had also greater microfibril angles, shorter fibres at lower pulp yields.
  • ? The handsheets produced with pulp from the poor site resulted in comparatively higher bulkiness, lower burst, lower tear and tensile indices, lower zero span tensile strength, but higher opacity, higher light scattering and higher surface roughness. Significant height effects were found with all wood properties, and also with tear index, zero span tensile strength and opacity.
  • ? Discriminant analysis showed that for 76 out of 100 handsheets the raw material source, i.e. growth site, could be predicted correctly using a set of handsheet properties with tear index and bulk index being most prominent.

From the summit downslope a granitic inselberg in French Guiana, soils and vegetation evolve from bare granite covered by cyanobacteria, to a savannah-type vegetation on thin patchy sandy accumulations, then to a low forest on shallow young soils and to a high forest on deep highly weathered ultisols.
  • ? We have used element budgets and Sr isotopic variations in soils and plants to investigate the mineral nutrient supply sources of the different plant communities.
  • ? Granite and atmospheric deposition have 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 1.3 and 0.71, respectively. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of cyanobacteria (0.72) suggests granite weathering by cyanobacteria crusts. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the savannah-type vegetation is 0.73 and varies between 0.75 and 0.76 in the low and high forest leaf litter regardless of soil depth, age and degree of impoverishment.

These almost constant ratio suggest that forest Sr comes from rainwater and from the summit of this inselberg, where it is released and redistributed along the slope, by surface flow, lateral redistribution of litter, and mineral particles. However, because of its very low content in the rock and soils, Ca is supplied to plants by atmospheric deposition.

  • ? Seven RAPD markers were used to assess the genetic diversity and structure of ten Tunisian natural Ceratonia siliqua L. populations from different geographic and bioclimatic zones.
  • ? The species maintain a high diversity within population as estimated by the percentage of polymorphic loci and Shannon’s index (P% = 76.31, $\bar H'_{pop} = 0.569$ ). The range of variation between populations was large. Populations from the upper semi-arid bioclimates, with more continuous distribution area showed the highest level of variation.
  • ? A high genetic differentiation among populations (ΦST = 0.250 and $\bar G_{ST} = 0.347$ ), as a result of population isolation was revealed. Nevertheless, the genetic structure is in accordance with bioclimate indicating that ecological factors also should influence differentiation. Populations from the sub-humid, upper semi-arid and mean semi-arid zones clustered together and were distinct from those of the lower semi-arid ones.

  • ? Stand harvesting and regeneration were usually considered to be a critical phase for the sustainability of forest soils. The present study concerned the effects on soil chemical fertility of the clear-cutting of a highly productive Douglas-fir stand aged 67 years that was clear-cut with no disturbance.
  • ? Results showed that soil changes were rapid in the three-year period following the cutting. The forest floor mass considerably decreased and the mineral soil showed a limited but real acidification. Soil losses represented 4% of the available nutrients over a depth of 60 cm for N, 22% for K, 25% for Ca and 32% for Mg. Only P increased by 11%. Due to the spatial variability of forest soils, and despite regular re-sampling, confidence intervals were large and difficult to reduce.
  • ? The reversibility of the effects of the clear-cutting and its consequences on soil functions depend on the element: it should not be a problem for C, N and K, which would recover when the biological cycle is re-established once again in the young stand. Phosphorus is not at issue since it changes form in the soil. The depletion of Ca, and to a lesser extent of Mg, is of some concern as a result of limited soil reserves, the limited flux of cations from the mineral changes in the soil, the relatively large part of Ca and Mg in the forest floor, and the negative input-output budgets for those elements.
  • ? The duration of the impact of the clear-cutting on soil requires medium-term observations because it cannot be deduced from the current knowledge of this ecosystem.

    Context

    In N-saturated forests nitrate concentrations in seepage water ( $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ ) regularly show high spatial variability even within homogeneous stands. Up to now the reasons of this variability are not fully understood.

    Aims

    The main objective was to identify the crucial parameters that control spatial variability of $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ at the H?glwald site.

    Methods

    We investigated a multitude of parameters (e.g. N turnover, root biomass, soil chemistry, soil physics, stand parameters) and related them to $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ , measured in 40?cm depth with suction cups.

    Results

    A small number of biological parameters (net N mineralization, root distribution, and stand density) explained up to 93?% of the variability of $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ in linear regression models. Net N-mineralization rates in the humus layer and fine root biomass in the upper mineral soil influenced $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ positively. Fine root biomass in deeper soil layers (30?C40?cm depth) and stand density had a negative influence.

    Conclusion

    The rate of net N mineralization in the organic layer is decisive for the nitrate production in the soil. Roots in the upper mineral soil increase $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ by intensive water uptake but excluding nitrate at the same time. The variation of these two parameters is responsible for most of the small-scale variability of $ {\text{N}}{{\text{O}}_3}{^{ - }_{\text{seepage}}} $ .  相似文献

    The ecological importance of fallowing to swidden (slash and burn) agriculture is well known. Cyclic agroforestry systems which emphasize utilization of the fallow cycle should, where appropriate, consider the ecologic processess of site recovery, so as not to impair the productivity of the subsequent swidden cycle. this artical discusses the ecologic ‘fit’ of a cyclic swidden-fallow management scheme into swidden cultivation and fallow succession. Such a fit suggests a reciprocally reinforcing situation between this agroforestry design and processes involved in site recovery. Observed among some indigenous and colonist inhabitants of the Peruvian Amazon, this system produces fallow crops and products, while enhancing site nutrient recovery. The economic benefits of this scheme have recently been reported (Denevan and Padoch, n.d.) while the ecologic attributes involved in promoting site recovery have not; primarily these include:
    1. Less destruction of the nutrient cycling root-mat in the swidden cycle, and its quicker re-formation in the fallow cycle.
    2. Discouraging the establishment of exotic, pantropical weeds and grasses such as imperata, while encouraging the colonization of local, early successional species.
    3. Encouraging the earlier establishment of woody plants in abandoned swiddens.
    4. A natural litterfall higher in nutrients than in unmanaged fallows.
    5. Additions of ‘slash’ litterfall higher in nutrient content than natural litterfall in the proximity of valuable managed plants.
    6. The increased capacity of the managed stand to scavenge limiting nutrients such as N and P from, and leach unneeded quantities of non-limiting nutrients such as K, Ca and Mg to, thoughfall.
    7. Increasing the alkalinity of throughfall, possibly resulting in less soil cation leaching in managed fallows.
    8. Staggering seed production, germination and maturation times of the rapid nutrient sycling softwood trees.
    9. Increasing the spontaneously occuring abundance of valuable fallow plants with management of successive fallow cycles, thereby possibly reducing the labor requirement, and increasing the value of this agroforestry scheme over time.

  • ? Nitrogen (N) exists in the soil in a variety of different forms and thus plants may avoid competition by taking up N as different chemical forms.
  • ? This study examined the uptake of nitrate, ammonium and glycine by three co-occurring species of Eucalyptus (E. obliqua, E. radiata and E. rubida) from dry sclerophyll forest in south-eastern Australia. Species preference for N forms was determined by measuring uptake of glycine, nitrate and ammonium from 15N-labelled solutions containing equimolar 100 μmol L? concentrations of all three N forms. KCl extracts were used to assess the relative abundance of the different forms of N in the soil’s exchangeable pool.
  • ? KCl extracts of soil indicated that amino acids comprised 30–40% of the soluble non-protein N, while ammonium varied from 10–70% and nitrate from 5–70%. In all species, ammonium was the preferred source of nitrogen and was taken up 2.5–4.5 times faster than glycine, and 30–50 times faster than nitrate. Species did not differ in preference for N-forms (species*N-form interaction, not significant).
  • ? This study indicates that nitrate, ammonium and amino acids are all present in soil, and thus there is the potential for niche differentiation based on chemical forms of N. However, there is no evidence that co-occurring Eucalyptus avoid competition for N by taking up different chemical forms.

A pot experiment was conducted using labeling of isotopically exchangeable phosphate ions of the soil and applying the dilution principle to accurately assess the contribution of the forest floor to P nutrition of maritime pine seedlings (Pinus pinaster Aït.). Three-week-old maritime pine seedlings were planted in pots containing either mineral soil (MS) or mineral soil covered with a forest floor layer (MS+FF).
  • ? After 130 d, P uptake was still insignificant in the MS treatment while the P content of the seedlings in the MS+FF treatment increased tenfold with respect to the initial P content. In the latter treatment, the forest floor contributed 99.1% of the P supply to pine seedlings.
  • ? The higher P uptake from the forest floor than from the mineral soil may be explained by its lower ability to retain inorganic P, which enabled a higher concentration of inorganic P to be maintained in solution.

  • ? Fall fertilization may increase plant nutrient reserves, yet associated impacts on seedling cold hardiness are relatively unexplored.

Bareroot red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) seedlings in north-central Minnesota, USA were fall fertilized at the end of the first growing season with ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) at 0, 11, 22, 44, or 89 kg N ha?1. Seedling morphology and cold hardiness [assessed by freeze induced electrolyte leakage (FIEL)] were evaluated six weeks after fertilization and following the second growing season.
  • ? Seedling height and number of needle primordia increased with fertilizer rate for both sampling years. Seedlings fertilized with 44 and 89 kg N ha?1 attained target height (15 cm) after the second growing season. Shoot and root N concentration increased after the first growing season in fall fertilized seedlings compared to controls. Fall fertilized seedlings had lower FIEL (i.e., increased cold hardiness) compared to controls when tested at ?40 °C after the first growing season, but no significant differences in FIEL of control and fertilized seedlings were observed after the second growing season.
  • ? Results suggest that fall fertilization of red pine seedlings can help render desired target height in the nursery, while maintaining or increasing cold hardiness levels.

    The concepts and principles in characterization of seedling performance potential are evaluated, the requirements of tests are discussed, and the guideline criteria presented in selected morphological and physiological tests are assessed. Further discussion follows concerning the development of proper concepts as a necessity for developing clear and operational devices, and problems in making predictions of survival and growth. When using a seedling performance potential test, the following features should be taken into an account:

  • basis of assessment; empirical or mechanistic
  • ability to accommodate changes in seedlings
  • prediction span
  • rules and scale of measurement
  • possibility to use in statistical quality control
  • applicability to different methods of characterization; single or sample sorting
  • design for site specific conditions
  • applicability for quality control during seedling raising in the nursery
  • suitability to repeated sampling
  • Clear practical requirements for a test are: yielding final results immediately, simple to understand and use at all levels of operation, inexpensive, accessible to all potential users, reliable, and of diagnostic value. Strong practicability of the performance potential tests require use of rigorous statistical analysis to find seedling tests with adequate prediction ability.  相似文献

It is not known if a direct transfer of carbohydrates takes place between the host tree and the developing ascocarps through ectomycorrhizal structures or whether sporophores become independent from their hosts after several weeks or months and are able to use dead host tissues or soil organic matter as carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) sources.
  • ? To study saprophytic or symbiotic capacities of truffle ascocarps the natural abundance of 15N and 13C in foliage, wood, fine roots, mycorrhizae, fungal sporophores and soil were determined in a truffle orchard.
  • ? The processes of carbon and nitrogen allocation remained unchanged during the entire period of ascocarp development of Tuber melanosporum. From 13C and 15N natural abundance measurements, T. melanosporum, T. brumale and T. rufum did not exhibit saprotophic strategy during ascocarp development, which is contradictory to common statements found in handbooks regarding truffle cultivation.

  • ? For assessing forest thinning effects at large (i.e. continental) scale, data scarcity and technical limitations prevent the application of localized or individual-based thinning models.
  • ? Here we present a simple general framework to analyze and predict the effects of thinning on growth and mortality, including the following stand density development. The effects are modeled in relative terms so that the model can be parameterized based on any thinning experiment that includes an unthinned control, regardless of site conditions and stand age.
  • ? The model was tested against observed thinning effects on growth and mortality from five temperate and boreal species (all species pooled r 2 = 0.51). It predicted a maximum increase in net stem biomass increment of 16% and a reduction in density-related mortality of 75% compared to un-thinned conditions at stand densities of around 70% of the maximum (increment optimal density).
  • ? A sensitivity analysis revealed overlapping ranges of near optimal density (net increment within 95% of optimal) among all tested species, suggesting that one thinning scenario can be used for many species. The simple and general formulation of thinning effects based on only five parameters allows easy integration with a wide range of generic forest growth models.
