A five-month-old male domestic shorthair cat presented with a history of vomiting for 4 days. An ultrasound examination of the abdomen was performed as part of the diagnostic workup. The gallbladder appeared to be bilobate. The cat died the following day from renal failure. At necropsy, a bilobed gallbladder was confirmed and considered to be a congenital anomaly unrelated to the cat's death.  相似文献

A scirrhous adenocarcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct was shown by histopathological examination to be the cause of obstructive jaundice in an 11-year-old female Siamese cat. In addition to icterus, the cat's clinical signs included depression, anorexia, vomiting, constipation, weight loss and dehydration. Symptomatic therapy relieved the anorexia, constipation, dehydration and depression, but jaundice, weight loss and occasional vomiting continued during the 2-month course of illness. Serum cholesterol and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) remained elevated and serum bilirubin and serum alkaline phosphatase (SAP) values progressively increased from the cat's initial presentation to its death 2 months later. At necropsy the tumour was found to involve only the extrahepatic bile duct. Neoplasia of the extrahepatic biliary system has been reported only twice in domesticated animals (Patnaik et al., 1975; Feldman, Strafuss & Gabbert, 1976).  相似文献

Cat owners commonly consider their pets to be members of their families, and many factors contribute to a high level of owner attachment to their cats. Suppression of a cat's emotional needs in favour of the emotional requirements of the owner may produce a less satisfactory relationship for the owner, and usually for the cat as well. Owners' failure to comprehend their cat's true demands of life, and their false expectation of their ability to fulfil human psychological demands lies at the heart of many feline behaviour problems.  相似文献

A 14-year-old spayed female cat weighing 2.3 kg developed tension pneumoperitoneum that progressed for 6 hr. Abdominocentesis was performed and 1.3 L of gas was aspirated after which the cat's respiratory condition improved. The next day, the cat's abdomen redistended, and laparotomy was performed. A gastric perforation was noted and sutured after the margin was resection. The cat showed a good physical condition without any gastrointestinal signs at 6 months after surgery.  相似文献

A 5-month old female domestic shorthair cat developed lethargy and severe ulcerative skin lesions that covered more than half of its body after routine administration of rabies vaccine, anthelmintic, and ear medication. Clinical and histologic findings were consistent with a severe cutaneous drug reaction or erythema multiforme. The cat's condition continued to deteriorate despite drug withdrawal and supportive care. Administration of human intravenous immunoglobulin was well tolerated by the cat and led to rapid resolution of ulcerative cutaneous lesions, accompanied by substantial improvement in the cat's demeanor within 8 days. Human intravenous immunoglobulin appears to be a novel promising treatment for life-threatening cutaneous drug reactions.  相似文献

Multiple myeloma was diagnosed in two cats with monoclonal hyperglobulinemia, proteinuria, and plasma cell proliferations in bone marrow. An immunoglobulin G-producing myeloma occurred in the vertebral bone marrow of one cat, and twice responded to surgical reduction followed by a combination of local irradiation and chemotherapy. The cat's survival time was approximately 2 years. The other myeloma in a cat that presented with hypercalcemia and renal insufficiency involved visceral organs and produced a biclonal peak due to immunoglobulin A dimer formation on serum electrophoresis. This cat's tumor did not respond to chemotherapy.  相似文献

An air-gun pellet that entered a cat's bladder through the flank carried in sufficient of the cat's own hair to block the penile urethra.

Discovered in 1950–51 by two great parisian medical teams, inoculation lymphoreticulosis, also called cat's scratch disease, is locoregional adenite whose aetiology is imperfectly determined. Following, often but not always, cat's scratch, it may evolve to suppuration. Pus is always aseptic. Attributed to Bedsonia's family micro-organism, no cultivation was possible up to date. Evolution is as a rule favourable, but disease is poorly accessible to tetracycline family's antibiotics. Diagnosis is possible by intradermoreaction. The antigen used is tyndallised pus of homologous infection. The role of the cat, still healthy, has not yet been explained.  相似文献

According to form and range of mobility the joints of the cat's paw (articulationes manus et pedis) are adjusted to two basic functions: as far as they are used for walking in the different gaits they show components in the sagittal plane that particularly correspond to the digitigrade dog. With regard to cat-specific behaviour, i.e. climbing and catching, specific characteristics of the joints for movements in the R-plane (rotation) and A-plane (abduction/adduction) can be distinguished. For this reason highly specialized types of articulations occur in cat's paw that are unique compared to other mammals and that mostly have not been described yet. In this context, like in the skeleton (see first communication), function-adapted divergences can also be found between the joints of the forepaw and hindpaw of the cat.  相似文献

Ischemic necrosis and rupture of the ileum caused by avulsion of the mesentery occurred in a 6-month-old cat following blunt trauma of the abdomen. The damaged section of intestine was resected and an anastomosis was performed using a single layer edge-to-edge suturing technic. Diffuse peritonitis was treated by peritoneal lavage and instillation of antibiotics into the peritoneal cavity at the time of surgery. The cat's recovery was uncomplicated. A rationale is provided for the suturing technic and peritoneal lavage at the time of surgery.  相似文献

A 2-year-old Himalayan cat was examined because of 4 days of vomiting, lethargy; and anorexia. The cat had undergone hysterectomy and removal of left ovarian remnants 5 days earlier. Results of laboratory testing and excretory urography were consistent with uremia and bilateral ureteral obstruction. Nephrostomy catheters were placed to drain urine and allow time for physiologic diuresis prior to definitive repair. During the next 2 days, the cat's physiologic status improved greatly. The cat underwent exploratory surgery, and both ureters were found to be ligated. The healthy proximal portions of the ureters were implanted into the bladder. Six months after surgery, the cat was doing well, and excretory urography demonstrated that both ureters were patent. Bilateral obstruction of the ureters is a life-threatening condition that can be difficult to correct in cats. Placement of nephrostomy catheters allows time for improvement in the cat's physiologic status prior to the protracted anesthesia time needed for surgical repair of the ureters.  相似文献

DNA testing for domestic cat diseases and appearance traits is a rapidly growing asset for veterinary medicine. Approximately 33 genes contain 50 mutations that cause feline health problems or alterations in the cat's appearance. A variety of commercial laboratories can now perform cat genetic diagnostics, allowing both the veterinary clinician and the private owner to obtain DNA test results. DNA is easily obtained from a cat via a buccal swab with a standard cotton bud or cytological brush, allowing DNA samples to be easily sent to any laboratory in the world. The DNA test results identify carriers of the traits, predict the incidence of traits from breeding programs, and influence medical prognoses and treatments. An overall goal of identifying these genetic mutations is the correction of the defect via gene therapies and designer drug therapies. Thus, genetic testing is an effective preventative medicine and a potential ultimate cure. However, genetic diagnostic tests may still be novel for many veterinary practitioners and their application in the clinical setting needs to have the same scrutiny as any other diagnostic procedure. This article will review the genetic tests for the domestic cat, potential sources of error for genetic testing, and the pros and cons of DNA results in veterinary medicine. Highlighted are genetic tests specific to the individual cat, which are a part of the cat's internal genome.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: An adult male Birman cat was evaluated for recurrent, intermittent vomiting or regurgitation, occasionally associated with abdominal discomfort. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND DIAGNOSIS: Radiographs, including an oesophogram, indicated an oesophageal obstruction. Prior to treatment, the cat's condition deteriorated and it was euthanised at the owner's request. Post-mortem examination revealed a gastro-oesophageal intussusception, a trichobezoar impacted into the intussusceptum, and a dilated oesophageal hiatus consistent with a chronic hiatal hernia. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Gastro-oesophageal intussusception is a rare condition in cats. Its aetiology in relation to a pre-existing hiatal hernia and a trichobezoar is discussed.  相似文献

A retrospective study of banked sera from 19 cats with the eosinophilic granuloma complex revealed that 68% of affected cats had circulating antibodies to components of normal cat epithelium. Seemingly, the eosinophilic granuloma complex of cats may be an autoimmune disease; however, epidermal damage caused by the eosinophilic granuloma complex may release altered self-antigens to which the cat's immune system responds.  相似文献

A 14-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was evaluated because of an abdominal mass and eosinophilia. Widely disseminated, transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder was diagnosed histologically. To further characterize the eosinophilia, eosinophils were separated from other leukocytes and cultured in vitro. Harvested cells were evaluated for density and for in vitro survivability. Results of these tests, hyperplasia of bone marrow eosinophil precursors, and lack of tumor tissue eosinophilic infiltrates suggested that an eosinophilopoietic stimulus of undetermined origin was likely the cause of this cat's hypereosinophilia.  相似文献

Cat elimination behavior problems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article focuses on behavior problems for which pathophysiologic causes have been ruled out. General discussions of marking, urination, and defecation, the specific postures used for each behavior, and procedures for diagnosis and treatment are discussed briefly. New information is provided about cat's preferences for different types of litter materials.  相似文献

A three-and-a-half-year-old male neutered Siamese cat presented with idiopathic feline lower urinary tract inflammation and dysuria, which appeared to be caused by stricture of the urethral meatus. Wedge meatoplasty was performed, which relieved the cat's dysuria and restored a normal urine stream. To my knowledge, this is the first report of meatoplasty as a treatment for stricture of the urethral meatus in a cat.  相似文献
