Thermography is proposed to be an alternative non-destructive and rapid technique for the study and diagnosing of salt tolerance in plants. In a pot experiment, 30 cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were evaluated in terms of their leaf temperature and shoot growth and their ion distribution responses to NaCl salinity at two concentration levels: the control with electrical conductivity (EC) of 1 dS m?1 and salinity treatment with EC of 16 dS m?1 (150 mM). A completely randomized block design with factorial treatments was employed with three replications. The results indicated that thermography may accurately reflect the physiological status of salt-stressed wheat plants. The salt stress-based increase in leaf temperature of wheat cultivars grown at 150 mM NaCl reached 1.34°C compared to the control. According to the results obtained, it appears that thermography has the capability of discerning differences of salinity tolerance between the cultivars. Three salt-tolerant wheat cultivars, namely Roshan, Kharchia and Sholeh, had higher mean shoot dry matter (0.039 g plant?1) and higher mean ratio of leaf K+/Na+ (14.06) and showed lower increase in the mean leaf temperature (0.37°C) by thermography compared to the control. This was while nine salt-sensitive cultivars, namely Kavir, Ghods, Atrak, Parsi, Bahar, Pishtaz, Falat, Gaspard and Tajan, had lower mean plant dry matter production (0.027 g plant?1), lower mean ratio of K+/Na+ (9.49) and higher mean increases in leaf temperature (1.24°C).  相似文献

In order to study effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) stress in irrigation water on photosynthetic characteristics and iron (Fe) and sodium (Na+) translocation content of pomegranate plants, a factorial experiment was conducted based on completely randomized design with three cultivars of pomegranate (“Gorch-e-Dadashi,” “Zagh-e-Yazdi,” and “Ghermez-e-Aliaghai”) and four concentrations of NaHCO3 (0, 5, 10, and 15 mM), with three replications. The results of plant analysis indicated that NaHCO3 affected chlorophyll index, Fv/Fm, and performance index (PI) in upper and lower leaves of shoots and also the translocation of Na+ and Fe. The results also showed that Fe translocation from root to shoot reduced at 15 mM level of NaHCO3. The highest Na translocation and the lowest Fe translocation were observed in Zagh-e-Yazdi and Ghermez-e-Aliaghai cultivars, respectively. The ratio of sodium/potassium (Na+/K+) in stems was higher than that in roots and leaves, and the observed chlorophyll content of upper leaves was also lower than that of lower leaves. Based on the measured parameters Gorch-e-Dadashi cultivar showed less relative sensitivity than other cultivars to NaHCO3 of irrigation water through maintaining the lower Na+ transport to the shoots, and improvement of Fe transport to shoots.  相似文献

Three cultivars of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cvs. Sera, 898, Rohaba) were grown under different levels of NaCl in nutrient solution to determine effects of salt stress on shoot and root dry matter (DM), plant height, water use efficiency (WUE, g DM kg‐1 water evapotranspired), shoot sodium (Na) and potassium (K) concentrations, and K versus Na selectivity (SK,Na). Increasing NaCl concentration in nutrient solution adversely affected shoot and root DM, plant height, WUE, K concentration, and K/Na ratio of all cultivars. Shoot Na concentrations increased with increasing NaCl concentration in the nutrient solution. Although increasing salt concentration in the solution adversely affected growth of all cultivars, the cultivar Sera had the highest shoot and root DM than the other two cultivars (898 and Rohaba). Shoot and root DM of cultivar 898 was most affected by salt, while cultivar Rohaba had an intermediate salt sensitivity. The cultivar Sera generally had higher WUE values, shoot K concentrations, and SK,Na, but had lower shoot Na concentrations than the other two cultivars when plants were grown under different salt levels. Greater Na exclusion, higher K uptake and shoot SK,Na are suggested as being plant strategies for salt tolerance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The effects of partial and complete substitution of potassium (K+) by rubidium (Rb+) and sodium (Na+) on plant growth and ion accumulation and partitioning was studied in bean young plants cultivated in nutrient solution with or without bicarbonate (HCO3 ?)-induced alkalinity. Plant growth was significantly decreased due to alkalinity and the substitution of K+, being leaves more affected than roots. Rubidium caused a severe toxicity reflected in a reduction in root dry mass and total chlorophyll concentration. Ion partitioning was markedly altered by alkalinity. Content of nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), K, and Na were more accumulated in the roots in HCO3 ?-treated plants, while decreased in the shoot. Iron (Fe) was accumulated at similar extent in plants with and without high alkalinity, except in plants grown in Rb+ solutions. However, Fe was more accumulated in the roots, suggesting that chlorophyll synthesis was impaired by reduced translocation or internal inactivation of Fe. Zinc total uptake was severely reduced under high alkalinity in plants grown in Na+ solutions, maybe due to decreased Zn activity. Calcium was translocated more actively to the leaves and Mg was accumulated more in the roots of plants in Na+solutions. Despite the severe decrease in plant dry mass caused by Rb+, there was a higher translocation of N, phosphorus (P), Ca, Mg, Fe, zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) from the roots to the leaves.  相似文献

According to the biphasic model of growth response to salinity, growth is first reduced by a decrease in the soil osmotic potential (Ψo), i.e., growth reduction is an effect of salt outside rather than inside the plant, and genotypes differing in salt resistance respond identically in this first phase. However, if genotypes differ in Na+ uptake as it has been described for the two maize cultivars Pioneer 3906 and Across 8023, this should result in differences in Na+ concentrations in the rhizosphere soil solution and thus in the concentration of salt outside the plant. It was the aim of the present investigation to test this hypothesis and to investigate the effect of such potential differences in soil Ψo caused by Na+ exclusion on plant water relations. Sodium exclusion at the root surface of intact plants growing in soil was investigated by sampling soil solution from the rhizosphere of two maize cultivars (Across 8023, Pioneer 3906). Plants were grown in a model system, consisting of a root compartment separated from the bulk soil compartment by a nylon net (30 μm mesh size), which enabled independent measurements of the change of soil solution composition and soil water content with increasing distance from the root surface (nylon net). Across 8023 accumulated higher amounts of sodium in the shoot compared to the excluder (Pioneer 3906). The lower Na+ uptake in the excluder was partly compensated by higher K+ uptake. Pioneer 3906 not only excluded sodium from the shoot but also restricted sodium uptake more efficiently from roots relative to Across 8023. This was reflected by higher Na+ concentrations in the rhizosphere soil solution of the excluder 34 days after planting (DAP). The difference in Na+ concentration in rhizosphere soil solution between cultivars was neither due to differences in transpiration and thus in mass flow, nor due to differences in actual soil water content. As the lower Na+ uptake of the excluder (Pioneer 3906) was only partly compensated by increased uptake of K+, soil Ψo in the rhizosphere of the excluder was more negative compared to Across 8023. However, no significant negative effect of decreased soil Ψo on plant water relations (transpiration rate, leaf Ψo, leaf water potential, leaf area) could be detected. This may be explained by the fact that significant differences in soil Ψo between the two cultivars occurred only towards the end of the experiment (27 DAP, 34 DAP).  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to compare the behaviour and bioavailability of Cd and Pb from two soils mixed with sewage sludge at three rates (0, 50 and 150 t ha?1) and maintained at two contrasting ambient temperatures (15°C and 25°C) over a period of one year following the treatments. Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) accumulated Cd and Pb in the sewage sludge treated soils, although accumulation was significantly lower in the soils treated at the high rate (150 t ha?1) compared to the low rate (50 t ha?1). Ryegrass grown in the warm environment (25°C) accumulated significantly higher levels of Cd and Pb than that grown in cooler conditions (15°C). Samples of the soils spiked with nitrate salts of Cd and Pb at equivalent rates of metal loading resulted in the ryegrass accumulating much higher levels of both the metals than on the sludge treated soils. Metal uptake by the ryegrass from the sludge treatments increased over successive harvests while that from metal salt treatments decreased. The observed trend of increasing plant metal uptake over time coincided with a trend of decreasing pH in the sludge treatments. However, the concentrations of Cd and Pb extracted by DTPA failed to predict the changes in plant metal uptake. The importance of sewage sludge as both a source and a sink of pollutant metals and the trend of increasing bioavailability over time shown by this experiment are discussed.  相似文献

Root growth and nutrient uptake rates of maize (Zea mays L.) are decreased at low root zone temperatures (RZT) and thus, shoot growth may be limited by nutrient deficiency. The objectives of this research were to characterize the shoot demand for nutrients per unit root at suboptimal RZT and to relate net translocation rates of N, P, K, and Ca from the roots to the shoot to shoot demand. Maize plants were grown for 11 days in soil or 8 days in nutrient solution at uniform shoot (24°/20°C, day/night) but different RZT (12°, 18°, and 24°C). The shoot base of the plants (apical shoot meristem and zone of leaf extension) was either kept within or above the cooled root zone. Shoot and root growth were significantly reduced at suboptimal RZT (12°, 18°). Lifting the shoot base above the cooling zone increased shoot growth markedly, whereas root growth was not significantly influenced. Thus, the shoot fresh weight increment day?1 g?1 root fresh weight (i.e. the shoot demand per unit root) was increased by a factor of up to 9 for plants with their shoot base above as compared to within the cooling zone. At suboptimal RZT, translocation rates of N, K, and Ca to the shoot remained low in plants with the shoot base in the cooling zone but were higher than in 24°C-grown plants, when the shoot base was above the cooling zone. In both nutrient solution- and soil-grown plants translocation rates of N, K, and Ca were closely correlated with the shoot demand per unit root but less to RZT. In contrast, the translocation rate of P was mainly affected by RZT but insensitive to shoot demand and, therefore, was always higher at a RZT of 24° than of 12°C. From these results it is suggested, that at low RZT the root-to-shoot translocation rates of N, K, and Ca are mainly determined by the shoot demand, whereas the translocation rate of P, regardless of the shoot demand, is reduced by a direct effect of low temperature on the roots.  相似文献

In the course of investigations on the impact of salinity on mineral ion transport in differentially salt susceptible soybeans (“Lee” and “Jackson”) short-term experiments were conducted to elucidate the distribution pattern of Na+ and some other cations. The results showed that low salinity (7.5 mM NaCl) did not induce varietal differences in Na+ content during a 30 hrs uptake period. At 66.5 mM NaCl, however, the Na+ contents increased more in the leaves of the salt sensitive variety “Jackson” than in “Lee”. Both soybean varieties retained Na+ in the proximal root and stem. Furthermore, they extruded considerable amounts of Na+ from the roots to the medium. Increasing the level of salinity in the solution substantially reduced the Ca2+ uptake of both soybean varieties. In an experiment with the salt sensitive variety under constant salinity but increasing Ca2+ concentration in the medium, the plants showed a reduction in Na+ uptake and translocation to stem and leaves and an enhanced Ca2+ uptake and translocation to the shoots. It is suggested that the injury observed in “Jackson” after salt treatment is not only related to the insufficient control of Cl? transport. At higher salinity levels the increasing accumulation of Na+ in the leaves and the varietally independant depression of Ca2+ uptake and translocation may enhance the development of leaf necrosis.  相似文献

We studied the growth and ionic composition of five wheat genotypes (Inqlab-91, Uqab 2002, SARC-1, SARC-3, and SARC-5) grown under salinity stress to applied silicon. Plants were grown with three levels of salinity [0, 60, and 120 mM sodium chloride (NaCl)] in the presence of 0, 2, and 4 mM Si in nutrient solution for 40 days. Salinity stress significantly decreased shoot and root biomass in plants with varying degrees. Genotype SARC-3 exhibited higher salt tolerance than other genotypes. Silicon (Si) application significantly (P < 0.05) increased plant biomass at both control as well as under saline conditions. Genotypes differed significantly for their response to applied Si in terms of biomass production. Silicon application significantly (P < 0.01) increased potassium (K+) concentration in shoots. Enhanced salinity tolerance in wheat by Si application was attributed to increased K+ uptake thereby increasing K+/sodium (Na+) ratio and lower Na+ translocation towards shoot.  相似文献

Mineral regulation of two soybean varieties Jackson and Lee was investigated in long term water culture experiments using saline solutions. The effects of extreme K:Na ratios using chloride and sulfate as counterions were studied in the early stages of salinity.

The growth rates of both varieties were not affected by salinization. A K+ stimulated, intensive acropetal Cl translocation was observed in the salt sensitive variety Jackson. The varieties did not differ in Na+ translocation and in the suppression of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the leaves. But the effect of the nature of salinization indicates already differences in Na uptake and translocation of the cultivars.

The avoidance of Cl, but also of Ha+, in connection with influences of the resulting ionic imbalance on metabolic pathways are probably the most causative factors for the different tolerance to salinity of the two soybean varieties.  相似文献

Net uptake and partitioning of sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) in plants of two sesame cultivars (Sesamum indicum cv. ‘PB-1’ and cv. ‘UCR’) exposed to 20 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) were studied over a period of 28 days. Both cultivars showed a marked discrimination between K+ and Na+ during uptake. The reduction of K+ in the plants caused by the NaCl treatment was of similar magnitude in the two cvs. The cv. ‘UCR’ showed lower Na+ concentrations in the shoot tissues than ‘PB-1’ and K+/Na+ selectivity ratios were higher in cv. ‘UCR’ than in cv. ‘PB-1’. At the last sampling on day 28 there was a marked decrease of shoot growth in cv. ‘PB-1’ in comparison to the cv. ‘UCR’. Leaves of cv. ‘PB-1’ showed clear toxic symptoms, while those of cv. ‘UCR’ did not. It is concluded that Na+ exclusion from the shoot contributes to salt tolerance of sesame, cv. ‘UCR’.  相似文献

Long distance transport of sodium in bean plants In 8–10 days old bean plants Na+ (22Na) has been applied to either a certain root zone, the stem, or the base and tip respectively of a primary leaf and the long distance transport of Na+ was studied in the following 12–48 h. The long distance transport of Na+ applied to the root zone 9–12 cm behind the tip was strongly restricted towards the shoot and hardly detectable towards the root tip (phloem transport). Presence of K+ in the surrounding solution strongly increased the Na+ efflux from the roots. After leaf application within 48 h 30–40% of the absorbed Na+ had been translocated out of the leaf in direction of the root where, from the basal root zones, intensive Na+ efflux took place. This Na+ efflux was hardly affected by presence of K+ in the external medium and was usually more than 10% of the Na+ taken up by the leaves. From the Na+ taken up by the hypocotyl within 12 h more than 25% had been released from the basal root zones into the nutrient solution. Less than 1% of the Na+ applied either to the leaf or the stem was translocated towards the shoot apex. Separation of the hypocotyl into cortex and stele at the end of the experiment demonstrated the high capacity of the stele for Na+ accumulation. Within the hypocotyl the transfer of Na+ from the stele to the cortex and the phloem seems to be a rapid process whereas the release of Na+ from the phloem into the stele is obviously very restricted. The long distance transport of Na+ within the phloem of the shoot is strictly basipetal and very efficient. Low Na+ contents of bean leaves are therefore the result of several regulating mechanisms: K+ stimulated Na+ efflux in the roots, restricted long distance transport in the xylem due to high Na+ accumulation in the stele, Na+ pumps at the phloem in stem and leaves for phloem loading of Na+, and finally strictly basipetal retranslocation of Na+ in the phloem into the roots and efflux into the solution from basal root zones.  相似文献

Abstract

Four ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.) cultivars were grown in 1/5 Steinberg nutrient solution supplemented with six Al levels (0, 37, 74, 148, 296, or 592 umol L‐1) at pH initially adjusted to 4.2. Average net Fe influx was stimulated at low nutrient solution Al levels. This stimulation was larger for more Al‐tolerant cultivars Marshall and Gulf. Decreases in average net Mn and Zn influxes were brought about by increasing Al levels in the nutrient solution. The average net influx of Fe, Mn, and Zn was positively correlated with the root tolerance index (relative root yield of plants grown with and without Al added to the nutrient solution). For more Al‐tolerant cultivars, increased total uptake of Fe and Cu was brought about by increased nutrient solution Al levels up to 74 umol L‐1. Decreases in total uptake of Mn and Zn were generally noted with increased nutrient solution Al levels. Percentage inhibition of total Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu uptake was negatively correlated with the mean pH of the Al‐containing nutrient solutions. The higher average net influx and the smaller percentage inhibition of total Fe uptake at nutrient solution Al levels up to 74 umol L‐1can be used as indicators in ranking ryegrass cultivars as more Al‐tolerant  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine if improved nutrient uptake increases salinity tolerance of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). A transgenic cotton line (CMO3) with increased salt tolerance and its wild line (SM3) were grown in pots containing substrate (peat:vermiculite = 1:1, v/v) in the first experiment, while cotton (‘SCRC 28’) was cultured in hydroponics with a split-root system in the second experiment. Contents of essential nutrient elements and Na+ in plant tissues, leaf photosynthesis (Pn) and chlorophyll (Chl) concentration and plant biomass were determined after salinity [sodium chloride (NaCl)] treatment in both experiments. In the first experiment, salinity stress with 150 mM NaCl reduced plant biomass and photosynthesis (Pn) of both SM3 and CMO3 compared with their non-stressed controls, but the CMO3 suffered significantly lower reductions than SM3, suggesting an increased salinity tolerance of CMO3 relative to SM3. Total uptake and contents of main nutrient elements [nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn)] in CMO3 were higher than those in SM3. Also, less sodium (Na+) accumulation and lower extreme ratios of Na/N, Na/P, Na/K, Na/Ca, Na/Mg, Na/Fe, Na/Mn, Na/Cu, and Na/Zn were observed in CMO3 than in SM3. Increased salt tolerance in transgenic AhCMO cotton was probably attributed to its superior nutrient uptake compared with SM3. In the second experiment, the non-stressed root half fed with moderate level of nutrient solution and salt-stressed half fed with low level of nutrient solution (CMN/SLN) exhibited higher salinity tolerance than salt-stressed root half fed with moderate level of nutrient solution and non-stressed root half fed with low nutrient solution (CLN/SMN). Plants absorbed more nutrients but less Na+ under CMN/SLN than CLN/SMN. The overall results suggest that improved nutrient uptake played an important role in the enhanced salt tolerance of cotton.  相似文献

Silicon (Si) is known to alleviate a number of abiotic stresses in higher plants including salinity stress. Two independent experiments were conducted to evaluate the role of Si in alleviating salinity stress in two contrasting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes, Auqab-2000' (salt sensitive) and SARC-3 (salt tolerant). In the first experiment, genotypes were grown in hydroponics with two levels of salinity (0 and 60 mM NaCl) with and without 2 mM Si in a completely randomized design with four replications. Salinity stress significantly (P < 0.01) decreased all of the growth parameters, increased sodium (Na+) concentration, and decreased potassium (K+) concentration in shoots of both genotypes grown in hydroponics. Silicon significantly improved growth of both genotypes. The increase in growth was more prominent under salt stress (75%) than under normal condition (15%). In the second experiment, both genotypes were grown in normal [electrical conductivity (EC) = 1.23 d Sm–1] and natural saline field (EC = 11.92 d Sm–1) conditions with three levels of Si (0, 75, and 150 g g–1 Si) with three replications in a randomized complete block design. Silicon significantly (P < 0.05) decreased growth reduction in both genotypes caused by salinity stress. The grain yield under salt stress decreased from 62% to 33% and from 44% to 20% of the maximum potential in Auqab-2000 and SARC-3, respectively, when 150 g g–1 Si was used. Auqab-2000 performed better in normal field conditions, but SARC-3 produced more straw and grain yield in saline field conditions. Addition of Si significantly (P < 0.05) improved K uptake and reduced Na+ uptake in both of wheat genotypes and increased the K+/Na+ ratio in shoot. Enhanced salinity tolerance and improved growth in wheat by Si application was attributed to decreased Na+ uptake, its restricted translocation toward shoots, and enhanced K+ uptake.  相似文献

Drip irrigation offers potential for rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in regions where water resources are limited. However, farmers in China’s Xinjiang Province report that drip-irrigated rice seedlings sometimes suffer salt damage. The objective of this study was to learn more about the effects of soil salinity and soil temperature on the growth of drip-irrigated rice seedlings. The study consisted of a two-factor design with two soil salinity treatments (0 and 1.8 g kg?1 NaCl) and three soil temperature treatments (18°C, 28°C and 36°C). The results showed that shoot biomass, root biomass and root vigor were greatest when seedlings were grown with no salt stress (0 g kg?1 NaCl) at 28°C. Moderate salt stress (1.8 g kg?1 NaCl) combined with high temperature (36°C) significantly reduced root and shoot biomass by 39–53%. Moderate salt stress and high temperature also increased root proline concentration by 77%, root malonyldialdehyde concentration by 60% and seedling mortality by 60%. Shoot and root Na+ concentrations, shoot and root Na+ uptake and the Na+ distribution ratio in shoots were all the greatest when moderate salt stress was combined with high temperature. In conclusion, high soil temperature aggravates salt damage to drip-irrigated rice seedlings. Therefore, soil salinity should be considered before adopting drip-irrigation for rice production.  相似文献

Short-term tracer experiments (36Cl) were conducted with the differentially salt susceptible soybean cultivars “Lee” (moderately tolerant) and “Jackson” (sensitive) to elucidate the pattern of Cl? uptake and translocation in relation to the physiology of salt tolerance. Rates of Cl? uptake by excised roots of “Jackson” were much greater in the lower (0.1–0.5 mM NaCl) and particularly in the higher concentration range than by the more tolerant cultivar. The transfer rate to the shoot was significantly higher in “Jackson” than in “Lee” and increased with time of treatment. The cultivar “Lee” translocated a relatively high amount of Cl? during the onset of salt treatment, but in contrast to “Jackson” was then able to slow down Cl? translocation into the shoot to a degree about proportional to the increment of dry matter. In experiments on secondary translocation both cultivars extruded substantial amounts of 36Cl? to the nutrient solution during the period in inactive solution with constant salinity following labeling. Possibly, some Cl? that had moved into the leaves during labeling was retranslocated and extruded via the roots. The absolute efflux rate was presumably greater for “Jackson” than for “Lee” although it appeared not efficient enough to compensate for the high rate of influx into the root. After 5–6 days of secondary translocation a lesser amount of Cl? was shifted from the root to the shoot in “Lee” as compared with “Jackson”. Chloride accumulation in the upper root and lower stem, similar to that reported for Na+ in several Na+ excluding species, was not observed. From the results it may be concluded that the cultivar “Jackson” cannot sufficiently control the uptake of Cl? and its translocation, particularly into the mature leaves; this contributes causally to the development of severe injury under continuous salt stress.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to elucidate the effects of inoculating five exopolysaccharide- (EPS-) producing bacterial strains on the dry matter yield and the uptake of K+, Na+, and Ca2+ by wheat seedlings grown in a moderately saline soil. The bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere soil (RS) of wheat grown in a salt-affected soil and included Aeromonas hydrophila/caviae (strain MAS-765), Bacillus insolitus (strain MAS17), and Bacillus sp. (strains MAS617, MAS620 and MAS820). The inoculation substantially increased the dry matter yield of roots (149–527% increase) and shoots (85–281% increase), and the mass of RS (176–790% increase). All the strains, except MAS617, also increased the RS mass/root mass ratio as well as the population density of EPS bacteria on the rhizoplane, and both these parameters were significantly correlated with the content of water-insoluble saccharides in the RS. Inoculation restricted Na+ uptake by roots, which was not attributable to the binding of Na+ by the RS, or to the ameliorative effects of Ca2+ under salinity. The decreased Na+ uptake by roots of inoculated than uninoculated plants was probably caused by a reduced passive (apoplasmic) flow of Na+ into the stele due to the higher proportion of the root zones covered with soil sheaths in inoculated treatments. Among the strains tested, MAS820 was the most efficient in all respects, whereas MAS617 was the least effective. Results suggested that inoculating selected EPS-producing bacteria could serve as a useful tool for alleviating salinity stress in salt-sensitive plants.  相似文献

The introduction of an active Na+ excretion system from salt-tolerant plants in salt-sensitive crop plants might necessitate enhancement of the robustness of K+ homeostasis and lead to improved plant growth under salt stress. To address this issue, we compared the acquisition and retention of K+ under excess Na+ concentrations in the common reed, which possesses excellent Na+ excretion ability, and low-Na+ excreting rice. Under excess Na+ concentrations, common reed maintained constant K+ content in all plant parts, whereas K+ content in rice decreased with increasing Na+ concentration. Preferential uptake of K+ against high Na+/K+ ratio in nutrient solution was approximately 10 times higher in common reed than in rice. The impact of excess Na+ on net K+ absorption rate of common reed was small. On the other hand, the net K+ absorption rate of rice was decreased by excess Na+ concentration. However, after the Na+ concentration in the nutrient solution was decreased from 50 to 1 mM, K+ absorption in rice recovered immediately. Thus, selectivity of K+ transporters or channels for K+ over Na+ in roots could be involved in the differences in K+ accumulation in rice and common reed.  相似文献

The effect of increasing manganese (Mn) concentrations on calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and phosphorus (P) absorption and translocation was studied in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Safari), before and after the end of mobilization of seed reserves. Rice plants were grown over a 15-, 21-, and 28-day period in nutrient solutions containing Mn concentrations varying between 0.125 and 32 mg L?1. It was found that increasing Mn concentrations in the nutrient solution was coupled to an increasing net uptake, total shoot accumulation, and root and shoot contents of this metal during all the experimental periods. Concerning the translocation rates, in 15-day-old plants a decrease was found after the 2 mg L?1 Mn treatment, but from the 21st day onward an increase was found until the highest treatment. The modulating action of Mn in macronutrient accumulation displayed different patterns among the experimental periods. In the root tissues of 15-day-old plants, Ca decreased significantly until the 2 mg L?1 treatment and Na increased. In the shoots, the contents of P and Na decreased, but K and Mg showed significant increases. Until the 32 mg L?1 Mn treatment, the ratio between root and shoot concentrations of K and Mg decreased in these plants. A similar pattern was also found for Ca until the 2 mg L?1 Mn treatment. That ratio increased for Na. Plant total amount of Ca sharply decreased. Shoot total amount of Na and P also decreased, but the pattern of Ca increased until the 2 mg L?1 Mn treatment. The concentrations of K increased in the root tissues 21 days after germination, but the levels of Ca, Mg, Na, and P decreased. In the shoots, the concentrations of Ca and Mg decreased significantly. Until the 32 mg L?1 Mn treatment, the ratio between root and shoot concentration of Na and P increased, whereas those of Ca and Mg decreased. An increase was found for the plant and shoot total amount of Ca, K, and Mg until the last Mn treatment, but an opposite trend was found for Na and P. Additionally, until the 32 mg L?1 Mn treatment, an increase was found for the proportions of Ca and Mg translocated to the shoot, but an opposite trend was detected for P. It was concluded that before and after the end of the mobilization of seed reserves, the net uptake rate of Ca is reversed, and, moreover, a similar trend is shown for the net translocation of Mg. A major implication of this process is the alteration of the related pattern for shoot accumulation. Eventually a different selectivity of the K+:Na+ ratio is also developed in the roots.  相似文献
