Type III secretion systems (T3SSs) are employed by Gram-negative bacteria to deliver effector proteins into the cytoplasm of infected host cells. Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli use a T3SS to deliver effector proteins that result in the creation of the attaching and effacing lesions. The genome sequence of the Escherichia coli pathotype O157:H7 revealed the existence of a gene cluster encoding components of a second type III secretion system, the E. coli type III secretion system 2 (ETT2). Researchers have revealed that, although ETT2 may not be a functional secretion system in most (or all) strains, it still plays an important role in bacterial virulence. This article summarizes current knowledge regarding the E. coli ETT2, including its genetic characteristics, prevalence, function, association with virulence, and prospects for future work.  相似文献

Recently, virulence patterns of Stx2e-producing Escherichia coli from pigs with edema disease and from humans were compared and strains from diseased pigs were reported to be unlikely human pathogens [Sonntag, A.K., Bielaszewska, M., Mellmann, A., Dierksen, N., Schierack, P., Wieler, L.H., Schmidt, M.A., Karch, H., 2005. Shiga toxin 2e-producing Escherichia coli isolates from humans and pigs differ in their virulence profiles and interactions with intestinal epithelial cells. Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 71, 8855-8863]. In the present study, 31 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strains harboring stx2e, which were previously isolated out of fecal samples from healthy pigs at slaughter [Kaufmann, M., Zweifel, C., Blanco, M., Blanco, J.E., Blanco, J., Beutin, L., Stephan, R., 2006. Escherichia coli O157 and non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in fecal samples of finished pigs at slaughter in Switzerland. J. Food Prot. 69, 260-266], were characterized by phenotypic and genotypic traits. Nine of the thirty-one sorbitol-positive non-O157 STEC (stx2e) isolated from healthy pigs belonged to serotypes found in STEC isolated from humans, including two serotypes (O9:H-, O26:H-) reported in association with hemolytic-uremic syndrome. Otherwise, the serotypes were different from those isolated from cases of edema disease in pigs. The eae (intimin) gene, which is strongly correlated with severe human disease, was not detected. Moreover, all strains were lacking the genes for enterohemolysin (ehxA), porcine A/E associated protein (paa), STEC autoagglutinating adhesin (saa) and the serin protease EspI (espI). Nine strains tested positive for astA (EAST1), one O141:H17 strain for fedA (F18 fimbrial adhesin) and one O159:H- strain for terF (tellurite resistance). Similar to the Stx2e-producing E. coli isolated from humans, which are mainly lacking further virulence factors, genes of an iron uptake system on the high-pathogenicity island (irp2, fyuA) were detected in three ONT:H10 and ONT:H19 strains from healthy pigs. Consequently, although the isolated strains are unlikely to be associated with severe human diseases, healthy pigs cannot be excluded as a potential source of human infection with Stx2e-producing STEC.  相似文献

Two hundred and fifty Escherichia coli isolates from diarrhoeic and healthy piglets were serotyped and tested for the presence of virulence genes for fimbriae, intimin, heat-labile (LT) and heat-stable (STa and STb) enterotoxins, Stx toxins, and enteroaggregative heat-stable 1 (EAST1) enterotoxin by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Although 220 isolates from diarrhoeic piglets belonged to 43 O serogroups and 77 O:H serotypes, 60% were of one of the 10 serogroups O2, O8, O15, O54, O84, O101, O141, O147, O149 and O157, and 60% belonged to only 10 serotypes (O8:H-, O54:H-, O84:H7, O101:H-, O141:H-, O141:H4, O147:H-, O149:H10, O163:H-, and ONT:H-). PCR showed that 79% of 220 isolates carried genes for at least one of the virulence factors tested. The gene encoding for EAST1 was the most prevalent (65%) followed by those encoding for STb (49%), LT (42%), STa (13%), and Stx2e (4%). Eighty-three (38%) of the 220 E. coli isolates carried the gene for F4 (K88), whereas genes for F18, F5 (K99), F41, F6 (P987), F17, and intimin (eae) were detected in 9%, 3%, 3%, 3%, 1%, and 3%, respectively. Seropathotype O149:H10:F4:LT/STb/EAST1 (70 isolates) was the most common, representing 32% of isolates. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis with XbaI of 15 O149:H10 representative isolates from diarrhoeic piglets distinguished 14 types. The 15 isolates exhibited a wide variability of distinct restriction patterns though all belonged to the same serotype (O149:H10), and all but one showed identical virulence determinants (F4, LT, STb, and EAST1). Among 30 isolates from healthy piglets only two virulence genes were detected: EAST1 (26%) and eae (17%). In total, 12 isolates were positives for the eae gene: five isolates had intimin beta1, four possessed intimin theta and three showed intimin type xiB. This is believed to be the first study describing the presence of intimin type xiB in E. coli of porcine origin.  相似文献

Verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) belong to a diverse range of serotypes. Serotypes O157 and O26 are predominately identified in VTEC-associated disease in Europe, however due to difficulty in detection little is known about the epidemiology of non-O157 serotypes. This study reports the identification of 7 VTEC serotypes from cattle faeces and soil. Cattle faeces samples (n=128) were taken from animals in 6 different farms, with soil samples (n=20) obtained from 1 farm. After sample incubation in modified tryptone soy broth (mTSB) supplemented with streptomycin sulphate samples were plated onto sorbitol MacConkey (SMAC) also supplemented with streptomycin sulphate. Bacteria detected on the plates were subjected to biochemical testing, antibiotic resistance profiling, and PCR to detect typical virulence genes, beta-lactamase and class 1 integron associated genes. Serotyping was performed on isolates positive for virulence genes. E. coli was identified from 103 samples, with verotoxin genes present in 7 E. coli isolates. Of these 7 isolates, 5 were resistant to 5 or more antibiotics. The isolate resistant to 9 antimicrobials contained a class 1 integron structure. Serotyping identified 7 separate VTEC, O2:H27, O26:H11, O63:H(-), O148:H8, O149:H1, O174:H21 and ONT:H25. Six of these VTEC have been previously associated with human disease, however with the exception of O26:H11, these serotypes have been rarely reported worldwide. Increased surveillance is required to determine the prevalence of these and other non-O157 VTEC. The presence of multi-antibiotic resistance in these isolates is of concern, and the overall implications for public health must be ascertained.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: An enteroaggregative Verotoxin (Vtx)-producing Escherichia coli strain of serotype O104:H4 has recently been associated with an outbreak of haemolytic-uremic syndrome and bloody diarrhoea in humans mainly in Germany, but also in 14 other European countries, USA and Canada. This O104:H4 E. coli strain has often been described as an enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), i.e. a Vtx-producing E. coli with attaching and effacing properties. Although both EHEC and the German O104:H4 E. coli strains indeed produce Vtx, they nevertheless differ in several other virulence traits, as well as in epidemiological characteristics. For instance, the primary sources and vehicles of typical EHEC infections in humans are ruminants, whereas no animal reservoir has been identified for enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC). The present article is introduced by a brief overview of the main characteristics of Vtx-producing E. coli and EAggEC. Thereafter, the O104:H4 E. coli outbreak is compared to typical EHEC outbreaks and the virulence factors and host specificity of EHEC and EAggEC are discussed. Finally, a renewed nomenclature of Vtx-producing E. coli is proposed to avoid more confusion in communication during future outbreaks and to replace the acronym EHEC that only refers to a clinical condition.  相似文献

The Escherichia coli type III secretion system 2 (ETT2) is found in most pathogenic E. coli strains. Although many ETT2 gene clusters carry multiple genetic mutations or deletions, ETT2 is known to be involved in bacterial virulence. To date, no studies have been conducted on the role of ETT2 in the virulence of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), which harbours ETT2. Thus, we deleted the ETT2 of APEC strain and evaluated the phenotypes and pathogenicities of the mutant. The results showed that deletion of ETT2 had no effect on APEC growth, but significantly promoted biofilm formation. In addition, as compared to the wild-type (WT) strain, the ETT2 deletion significantly promoted adherence to and invasion of DF-1 chicken fibroblasts and facilitated survival in the sera of specific-pathogen-free chickens. Analysis of the role of ETT2 in animal infection models demonstrated that the distribution of viable bacteria in the blood and organs of chicks infected with the ΔETT2 was significantly higher than those infected with WT. The results of RNA sequencing indicated that multiple genes involved in biofilm formation, lipopolysaccharide components, fimbrial genes and virulence effector proteins are regulated by ETT2. Collectively, these results implicated ETT2 is involved in the biofilm formation and pathogenicity of APEC.  相似文献

To study the impact of season to the distribution of bovine E.coli O157:H7,samples of anus swabs (399),feces (68),water (29) and feed (43) were collected in the spring, summer,autumn and winter from A,B and C farms of Xinjiang. After enrichment by EC broth, SMAC and MUG selective culture were then performed. Finally,PCR was used for identification and virulence gene detection of isolated strains. A total of 5 E.coli O157:H7 strains were isolated from 539 samples from three farms (0.93%,5/539), 2 of them were from spring (1.44%,2/139),1 from autumn(0.56%,1/180),2 from winter (1.38%,2/145) and no strains were isolated from summer samples. One strain were isolated from anus swab samples in farm B (0.69%,1/145) and one were isolated from anus swabs (0.66%,1/152) and three strains were isolated from feed samples in farm C (20.00%,3/15),and no target strains were isolated from water samples. The distribution of bovine E. coli O157:H7 had obvious seasonal characteristics.One E.coli O157:H7 strain of farm B was isolated from autumn and four of farm C were from isolated spring (2 strain) and winter (2 strain),and the isolation rate of E. coli O157:H7 in spring and winter were higher than that in summer and autumn. In conclusion,under the special climate characteristics and feeding mode in Xinjiang,to prevent and control the spreading of E. coli O157:H7 of cattle,we must pay great attention on hygiene management of pens at cold season, specially avoiding the feed contaminated by feces.  相似文献

Three hundred and twenty-four strains of Escherichia coli isolated from weaned pigs with diarrhoea or oedema disease in Eastern China were screened by multiplex PCR for the presence of the gene encoding adhesin involved in diffuse adhesion I (AIDA-I). Two AIDA-I positive strains were subjected to analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the complete orfA and orfB of the AIDA gene. The AIDA-I positive E. coli isolates were also assessed for five fimbriae (F4, F5, F6, F18 and F41) by monoclonal antibodies and for toxin genes (STa, STb, LT, EAST1, Stx2e) by PCR. Twenty-one (6.5%) of the isolates possessed AIDA-I genes. Of these isolates, two carried AIDA-I genes as the only demonstrated virulence factors, and the remaining isolates carried other virulence factor genes. Comparing the AIDA-I sequence from porcine and human sources, a high homology of orfA both in porcine E. coli and human E. coli was observed. However, each orfB of the two porcine E. coli isolates was 3864 nucleotides long compared with 3861 for the E. coli 2787 orfB, and showed 96.5% homology to E. coli 2787. The data indicated (1) that AIDA-I may be an occasional virulence factor in post-weaning diarrhoea and oedema disease in pigs, (2) that it has the potential to transfer between porcine and human E. coli, and (3) that there is a genetic diversity in orfB between human and porcine E. coli.  相似文献

为了解大肠杆菌O157∶H7毒力差异株转录组差异,丰富O157∶H7转录组数据信息,本研究采用Illumina HiSeqTM 2000平台对两株大肠杆菌O157∶H7毒力差异株进行高通量测序,测序数据采用测序评估、基因功能注释等生物信息学方法进行分析。结果发现,经过测序,两个菌株分别获得3 113 118和2 944 912条reads,比对到参考基因组上的reads分别占总reads的83.76%和78.97%。以中等毒力株为参考,在高毒力株中共获得941个差异表达基因,其中上调基因637个,下调基因304个。GO功能注释分析表明,差异表达基因主要与催化活性功能、黏附、转运活性、受体活性、酶调节活性、定位、生化调节、运动等诸多生理生化过程相关;KEGG富集分析发现共有425个基因注释到160个代谢通路中,其中新陈代谢、核糖体、鞭毛合成、嘧啶代谢、糖类代谢、细菌趋化等通路显著富集。此次通过大肠杆菌O157∶H7毒力差异株转录组研究对差异表达基因涉及的信号调控及可能的功能基因进行了探索,丰富了转录组信息,为进一步开展大肠杆菌O157∶H7毒力相关基因的研究及分子调控机制奠定了基础。  相似文献

Duplex real-time PCR assays were used as modules to cover partially automated detection of 12 genes encoding adhesins, enterotoxins and Shiga toxins in faecal E. coli isolates. For this a total of 194 E. coli isolates from pigs suffering from post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD), including 65 isolates with haemolytic activity, and 83 isolates from calves with diarrhoea were examined. Data obtained by PCR were compared with O-typing and with haemolytic activity as indirect virulence markers. E. coli O-types O139:K82, O141:K85, and O149:K91 accounted for 43.8% (n = 85) of all porcine strains and for 55.4% (n = 36) of the porcine strains, which exhibited haemolytic activity. These strains carried virulence genes by 65.9% (n = 56) and 80.6% (haemolytic E. coli, n = 29), respectively. The E. coli O-types O139:K82 and O141:K85 were significantly associated with the adhesin gene F18, and O149:K81 with the F4 gene. In this context, detection of the gene encoding F18 was coupled predominantly with the genes responsible for the production of the toxins ST-I, ST-II and Stx2, and the F4 gene with those of the enterotoxins ST-I, ST-II and LT. Both virulence patterns were detected more pronounced in E. coli strains with haemolytic activity. Fifty-six of a total of 83 E. coli isolates originating from calves were O-typed as O101 (O101:K28, O101:K30, O101:K32; n = 29), O78:K80 (n = 23), and O9:K35 (n = 4). Most of the E. coli O78:K80 strains carried the F17 gene (69.6%, n = 16). Virulence genes encoding for F4, F5 or ST-I were detected only in single cases. Intimin and Shiga toxin genes that are present in enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) were not detected.  相似文献

To investigate the cause of piglets diarrhea, and the distribution of the serotype and virulence factors of swine Escherichia coli in Beijing, 400 diarrhea samples were collected. TSA serum agar culture method was used to isolate Escherichia coli, serotype identification test and virulence factor genes test were used to verify the presence of O-antigen. 64 strains of E.coli were isolated from 400 diarrhea samples, among which 42 strains of E.coli were classified as 8 serotypes:O101(18.7%),O64(12.5%),O8(10.9%),O20(10.9%),O45(4.7%),O149(4.7%),O2(1.6%) and O89(1.6%), and the major virulence factors were STa, Stx2e, astA and eaeA. There were 8 mainly serotypes that caused piglets diarrhea in Beijing area, among which O101 serotype accounted for the highest proportion. The major virulence factors were astA and eaeA, accounted for more than 50% of all strains, STa and Stx2e accounted for more than 30% of all strains. These data would provide effective data to support the prevention and control of piglet diarrhea in Beijing.  相似文献

本试验旨在调查北京地区仔猪腹泻的原因及猪源大肠杆菌血清型、毒力因子的分布情况。收集北京京郊地区仔猪腹泻样本400份,应用含2%血清的TSA培养基分离大肠杆菌,通过血清型鉴定试验和毒力因子检测验证O抗原。结果显示,400份样本中分离到64株大肠杆菌,定型42株。其主要为O101型(18.7%)、O64型(12.5%)、O8型(10.9%)、O20型(10.9%)、O45型(4.7%)、O149型(4.7%)、O2型(1.6%)、O89型(1.6%)8种血清型,其携带的毒力因子为STa、Stx2e、astA和eaeA等。结果表明,引起京郊仔猪腹泻的大肠杆菌主要有8个血清型,其中O101型发病比例最高。其携带的毒力因子主要为astA和eaeA,占全部菌株的50%以上,STa和Stx2e因子占全部菌株的30%以上。本试验结果将为今后京郊地区仔猪腹泻病的防控提供有效的数据支持。  相似文献

Domestic animals belonging to seven different species (cattle, sheep, dogs, cats, pigs, chicken and goats) were investigated as natural reservoirs for attaching and effacing Escherichia coli (AEEC). For this, 2165 E. coli strains from faeces of 803 animals were examined for the presence of the intimin -(eae) gene as a characteristic of AEEC strains. Ten percent of the animals were found to excrete AEEC, most frequently found in sheep (19.2%) and pigs (17.6), followed by cattle (10.4%), dogs (7.2%), cats (6.5%) and poultry (2.3%). The 97 AEEC strains from animals were grouped into 44 serotypes. Only four E. coli serotypes (O2:H8, O26:[H11], O109:[H25] and O145:[H28] were found in more than one animal host species. AEEC O26:[H11] strains were most frequently isolated (13.4%) being present in cattle, poultry, pigs and sheep. A search for virulence markers associated with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) revealed Shiga-toxin genes in three (3.1%) AEEC strains from sheep. Bundle forming pili genes as a trait of typical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) were detected in four (4.1%) strains from dogs and cats. The remaining 90 AEEC strains were classified as atypical EPEC. Typing of intimin genes revealed intimin beta being present in 51.5% of the strains, followed by intimins theta (23.7%), epsilon (6.2%), kappa (5.2%), zeta (5.2%), alpha, eta and iota (each 1.0%). Our data indicate that domestic animals and pets constitute an important natural reservoir of AEEC strains, and some of these (O26:[H11], O103:H2, O128:H2, O145:[H28] and O177:[H11]) are known to occur as pathogens in humans.  相似文献

Shiga-toxigenic E. coli (STEC) strains that produce Shiga toxin Stx2e cause oedema disease in weaned piglets. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of Stx2e released in mesenteric lymph nodes on disease pathogenesis. Colistin and ampicillin were intramuscularly administered to piglets of the experimental group simultaneously challenged with STEC strain, type O139:F18ab, Stx2e+. Piglets of the control group were challenged with STEC only. The strain was naturally resistant to ampicillin and susceptible to colistin. After the challenge, colonisation of the intestines was observed in both antibiotic-treated piglets and control piglets without antibiotic treatment. Histochemistry and scanning electron microscopy revealed sporadic colonisation of the small intestine in the piglets. STEC was detected in the mesenteric lymph nodes of untreated piglets. The clinical manifestations of oedema disease were observed in both groups. In the antibiotic-treated group (11 piglets), oedema disease developed in 10 piglets, eight of which died or were euthanized ante finem. In the untreated group (11 piglets), oedema disease developed in five piglets, four of which died or were euthanized ante finem. We therefore propose that the STEC lysed by colistin suddenly released the toxin from bacterial cells immediately after their passage through the intestinal wall. That could explain a more severe course of oedema disease in the treated piglets. Even though high amounts of STEC were present in the lymph nodes of untreated piglets, the toxin was not released abruptly because the bacterial cells were not damaged.  相似文献

Ruminants are an important reservoir of Escherichia coli O157:H7, therefore reducing E. coli O157:H7 excretion by these animals could play a key role in reducing human infections. The present study investigates the potential of bovine lactoferrin, a natural antimicrobial-immunomodulatory protein of milk, to prevent colonization and excretion of E. coli O157:H7 in sheep. The effect of two different doses of lactoferrin (1.5 g or 0.15 g per 12h) was evaluated on colonization of sheep intestine and faecal excretion of the NCTC12900 strain. Hereto, lactoferrin was orally administered to sheep during 30 consecutive days and sheep were experimentally infected with E. coli O157:H7 on the second day of the lactoferrin administration. Interestingly, both lactoferrin dosages significantly reduced the number of E. coli O157:H7 in faeces as well as the duration of faecal excretion. The high dose group showed a significantly higher antibody response against EspA and EspB, two structural proteins of the bacterial type III secretion system (TTSS), than the colonization control group. The results suggest that oral lactoferrin administration could be used to prevent persistent colonization of sheep with E. coli O157:H7.  相似文献

Escherichia coli is a common avian pathogen mainly associated with extraintestinal infections such as yolk sac infection (YSI). The aim of this study was to determine the serotypes and the presence of some virulence genes of E. coli strains isolated from different samples in a vertically integrated poultry operation in Mexico. Two hundred sixty-seven E. coli isolates from different samples were serotyped using rabbit serum against the 175 somatic (O) and 56 flagellar (H) antigens of the typing schema. Virulence genes were determined by colony blot hybridization, using DNA probes for st, eae, agg1, agg2, bfp, lt, cdt, slt, and ipaH diarrhea-associated virulence factors. The serogroup of 85% of the strains was determined; O19 (12%), 084 (9%), 08 (6%), and 078 (5%) were the most common. Using the complete antigenic formula (O and H), O19:NM (n = 31) was the serotype most frequently isolated from dead-in-shell embryos and in broilers that had died on the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh days after hatch. One hundred ten strains (41.2%) hybridized with one or more of the used probes. Of these, ipaH (72%), eae (30%), and cdt (27%) were the most common. Considering the origin of the respective isolates, 40% of the broiler farm strains were positive for at least one probe. Results show that some avian E. coli strains isolated in Mexico are included in avian pathogenic E. coli serotypes not previously reported, suggesting that they could be specific for this geographic area. The wide distribution of the ipaH gene among nonmotile strains suggests that this invasiveness trait could be important in YSI pathogenesis. On the other hand, some other genes could contribute to E. coli virulence during YSI.  相似文献

There has been strong debate as to whether feeding cattle hay prior to slaughter will reduce the number and/or virulence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the bovine gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This study addressed this issue by comparing numbers, persistence, and acid resistance of generic coliforms and E. coli O157:H7 from various gastrointestinal tract sites of cattle fed grain or hay. Mature Angus steers, doubly cannulated into the rumen and duodenum were inoculated with E. coli O157:H7. Aliquots of digesta from the rumen, duodenum, and rectum were cultured directly or acid shocked (pH 2.0) and then cultured to determine acid resistance. The culture technique used was as sensitive as standard immunomagnetic bead separation protocols. E. coli O157:H7 from hay-fed or grain-fed cattle were similarly acid resistant in all GIT locations. In contrast, generic coliforms from the rumen and rectum of hay-fed animals were more sensitive to an acid shock than coliforms from those GIT locations in grain-fed animals. E. coli O157:H7 colonized the most distal region of the GIT and was not consistently cultured from the rumen or the duodenum. Numbers in the upper GIT did not predict numbers or persistence of E. coli O157:H7 in rectal samples. Grain-feeding or hay-feeding did not affect survival of E. coli O157:H7 in the rumen, nor its passage through the abomasum (pH 2.0) to the duodenum. These data show that generic coliforms behave differently in the bovine host than E. coli O157:H7 and that E. coli O157:H7 acid resistance was independent of animal diet.  相似文献

In order to interact with their host, pathogenic strains of E. coli need to secrete some virulence factors which can modify the metabolism of host cells, contributing to disease. Since E. coli is a Gram-negative bacteria, this secretion process involves the crossing of both the inner and the outer membranes. E. coli uses mainly four secretion mechanisms called type I, type II, type III and type IV secretion systems. In the type I secretion system, the secretion machinery is composed of three proteins forming a channel through the inner and outer membranes. It is a one-step mechanism. The secretion signal is present in the carboxyterminal region of the secreted protein but without proteolytic cleavage. In E. coli, the best studied type I secreted protein is haemolysin. In type II and type IV secretion systems, the crossing of the inner membrane involves the sec machinery with the cleavage of an aminoterminal signal sequence. The crossing of the outer membrane involves the formation of a pore either by other proteins (type II) or by the carboxyterminal region of the protein (type IV). The A-B toxins, such as heat labile enterotoxin, are secreted by the first mechanism and members of the IgA proteases are secreted by the second. The type III secretion system involves at least 20 proteins including cytoplasmic, inner membrane and outer membrane proteins. The originality of this system is the ability to inject secreted bacteria into the cytosol of the host cells. Such a system is found in attaching and effacing E. coli and in diffusely adhering E. coli.  相似文献

In this report we describe the isolation of a stx2f-containing E. coli O128 strain from an 11-month old child with diarrhea and comparison of this strain with stx2f-positive E. coli isolates from droppings of pigeons. The human E. coli O128:NM (nonmotile) isolate had a fliC restriction fragment length polymorphism pattern identical to that in one of the pigeon isolates belonging to the serotype O128:H2. All isolates examined, including that from the patient and five from pigeons, contained the intimin-encoding eae gene in addition to stx2f and all of the strains possessed the gene encoding the major subunit of the long polar fimbriae in enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) 026. Plasmid-associated virulence genes such as EHEC-hlyA, as well as urease and tellurite resistance-encoding operons were absent from all the strains and this correlated with their lack of hemolytic activity and urease production and tellurite sensitivity. These features, together with the sorbitol fermentation phenotype of Stx2f-producing E. coli, hamper the laboratory diagnosis of these strains. Our data demonstrate that pigeons may be a reservoir of Stx2f-producing E. coli strains associated with human disease.  相似文献
