In this study, the contact angles of three different reference liquids (including distilled water, diiodomethane, and formamide) and PF resin on the surfaces of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) samples untreated or treated with different con- centrations of ACQ-D (ammoniacal copper quat Type D) solutions were measured. Then, the surface free energy was calculated by two approaches: acid-base approach and geometric mean approach. ACQ-D treatment caused higher contact angles and lower surface free energies at a retention level corresponding to the commodity treated wood products. When wood was treated with much higher concentrations of ACQ-D, the total surface free energy of wood would be higher than the untreated control. Acid-base/polar compo- nents related with the hydrogen bonding state in wood were considered to be responsible for the observed changes according to the applied approaches. The hydrophobic properties and also higher contact angles of PF resin drop on wood surfaces after ACQ-D treatment at a reasonable retention level confirms the changes on surface free energy. 相似文献

Transverse swelling and its anisotropy in hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) in several kinds of organic liquids and in water were investigated by means the replica method. There was more cross-sectional swelling of cell walls and cell wall thickness in earlywood than in latewood. Marked swelling toward cell lumens was observed in wood swollen in liquids that had higher swelling potentials than water. This suggests that the swelling of cell walls in these liquids is much greater than the external swelling. Feret's diameters of the cell lumens were reduced by swelling in all the observed cases except in the tangential direction of earlywood, suggesting that cell walls swell to a much less extent in width than in thickness. Deformation of cell shapes caused by the tensile force from the latewood were observed in the earlywood and in the transitional region from earlywood to latewood. When swollen in water, transverse swelling anisotropy caused only by the swelling in cell wall thickness were calculated to be 1.2 for the whole region over an annual ring and 1.4 for the earlywood. These values could not account for the external swelling anisotropy of 2.1. Considering obvious deformations of cell shapes in the earlywood and in the transitional region, we conclude that the interaction between earlywood and latewood is one of the prime factors contributing to the transverse swelling anisotropy of coniferous wood.Part of this report was presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Nagoya, April 1998 相似文献

Low density wood is more rapidly eroded than denser wood when exposed to the weather, possibly because it is more susceptible
to photodegradation. Fourier transform infrared microscopy was used to examine: (1) the depth of photodegradation in earlywood
and latewood of sugi (Japanese cedar) and earlywood of hinoki (Japanese cypress) exposed for up to 1500 h to artificial sunlight
emitted by a xenon lamp (375 W/m2 within the 300 to 700 nm spectral range); and (2) the relationship between the density of wood tissues and depth of photodegradation.
The depth of photodegradation varied between species (sugi and hinoki) as well as within a growth ring (sugi earlywood and
latewood), and there was an inversely proportional relationship between depth of photodegradation and wood density. These
findings may explain why low density earlywood is more rapidly eroded than latewood during weathering, and more generally,
why there is an inverse relationship between the density of wood species and their rate of erosion during artificial and natural
weathering.

Differentiating from normal wood, pit membranes in wetwood of subalpine fir contain bacteria of water drop shape or orbicular
shape, and flaky shape, as observed using Scanning Electronic Microscope. Not only are ray parenchyma cells in wetwood partially
degraded but also margo strands in pit membranes are somewhat degraded by bacterial activities. Most of the bordered-pit membranes
in normal wood are unaspirated in green conditions and the proportions of aspirated pits in earlywood and latewood account
for only 6.8% and 13.4%, respectively. Nevertheless, most of the bordered-pit membranes in wetwood are aspirated in green
conditions and the proportions of aspirated pits account for 77.7% and 72.1%, respectively. The problem of hard-to-dry for
subalpine fir could be reasoned from the considerable amount of aspirated pit membranes in wetwood.

The interference of copper based preservative treated southern yellow pine (SYP) on the cure of phenol-formaldehyde adhesives
was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Copper preservatives used in this study include copper
azole (NS), alkali copper quat (ACQ)-type C (NW). Three commercial phenol-formaldehyde (PF) adhesives used for oriented strand
board (OSB) face area, core area and a plywood adhesive were studied. The curing peak temperature and peak time of OSB core
and face PF resin shifted to higher temperature and duration in the presence of CCA, NS, and NW-treated SYP compared to that
in untreated SYP. The above treatments interfere with the cure of OSB core and face PF resin. Untreated SYP showed a curing
accelerating effect on the cure of plywood adhesive, but the accelerating effect of copper-treated SYP on the cure of plywood

Genetic parameters for various wood density traits were estimated in 29-year-old trees of 18 full-sib families of hybrid larch
(Larix gmelinii var. japonica × Larix kaempferi) F1. Intra-ring density variation (IDV) was also evaluated using a model that expresses the pattern curve from earlywood to latewood
as a power function. A high IDV indicates an abrupt change in wood density from earlywood to latewood. The ring width and
wood density traits of individual rings were determined by X-ray densitometry. Overall wood density (RD) was shown to increase
with increasing ring number, ranging from 0.42–0.59 g/cm3, whereas IDV of individual rings decreased gradually from pith outwards. Estimates of individual tree narrow-sense heritability
of RD and IDV were 0.66 and 0.67, respectively. IDV showed negative genetic and phenotypic correlations with RD (r
g = −0.99, r
p = −0.72). The predicted genetic gains in latewood proportion and IDV were higher than that of RD. These results suggest that
the intra-ring density variation is under moderate genetic control equivalent to wood density. The trend of increasing wood
density from earlywood to latewood was associated with changes in both tracheid diameter and cell wall thickness. 相似文献

Summary Fibril angles were greater for earlywood (avg. 33.4°) than for latewood tracheids (avg. 26.9°). For earlywood, fibril angle did not differ between growth rates when the specific gravity was low (avg. 33.3°). When the specific gravity was high, wood of fast growth had a higher fibril angle (avg. 35.1°) than wood of slow growth (avg. 32.0°). No differences were detected between core, middle, and outer wood. In latewood tracheids, fibril angles were greater in corewood (avg. 28.0°) than in middle or outer wood (avg. 26.3°). For whole wood (a weighted average of earlywood and latewood), fibril angle averaged 30.7° and was greater in corewood (avg. 32.2°) than in middle or outer wood (avg. 29.9°). 相似文献

A better understanding of the sorption behavior of different wood structures could be useful in protecting wood against wood
deterioration and fungal attack. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of differences among earlywood, latewood,
and tree ring location within the stem cross-section of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) on the sorption kinetics and statics of water vapor under ambient conditions. The water vapor sorption of earlywood and
latewood in different tree rings was recorded using a dynamic contact angle analyzer under relative humidity changes from
11 to 89%, as provided by saturated salt solutions. Earlywood had higher sorption rates and diffusion coefficients than latewood,
while outer tree rings had higher sorption rates and diffusion coefficients than inner tree rings. The sorption isotherms
of earlywood, latewood, and different tree ring locations within the stem cross-section were fitted very well by a Hailwood–Horrobin

The improvement of wood surface wettability can clearly improve bonding properties, as well as enhance physical and mechanical
properties of wood composites. In our investigation, the microwave plasma (MWP) technique was adopted to treat the surface
of common teak. The treatment effect was evaluated by measuring the contact angles of liquids and calculating the free surface
energy. The results show that the modification effect improved when the sample was located 120 mm from the resonance cavity,
rather than at 80 mm. A MWP treatment over a short span of time is useful to lower the contact angles and improve the surface
wettability considerably. The range of decreasing contact angles, tested by water, could reach 74% at a distance of 120 mm.

The interactions of alkaline copper quat (ACQ) components with the earlywood and latewood tissues of southern pine were investigated. There was a highly significant redistribution of the copper amine component from the earlywood to the latewood during post-treatment fixation at 50°C, which was mainly attributed to diffusion of copper amine from the earlywood into the latewood. A small amount of copper amine redistributed between the tissues and toward the wood surfaces during drying following fixation. The redistribution within the wood was similar whether the preservative penetrated longitudinally, tangentially, or radially into the wood during pressure treatment. This redistribution resulted in lower solubility of copper, and this effect contributes to the overall copper fixation in ACQ-treated wood. The quat component did not significantly diffuse after treatment, and its concentration remained much higher in the earlywood compared to the latewood. 相似文献

对10个10年生日本落叶松无性系的木材基本密度、管胞参数进行了测定.结果表明:木材基本密度,早、晚材管胞宽度和早材长宽比无性系间差异显著;木材基本密度,早、晚材管胞长度,早晚材管胞宽度和早晚材长宽比径向变异模式相似,即从髓心向外以曲线形式不断增加,有时亦有起伏;早材从髓心向外以近似直线的形式缓慢增加,晚材从髓心向外以曲线形式增加,初期增加幅度较大,到一定年龄后趋于水平变化并略有波动;材质性状与树木年轮间的关系以对数方程、幂函数方程、指数方程拟合效果较好;除了晚材壁腔比和早材壁厚外,其它木材性质的重复力均在0.5以上,受中度或中度以上的遗传制约,按照20%的选择率,长宽比和晚材管胞长能获得较高的遗传增益. 相似文献

The relationships between bending properties, compressive strength, tracheid length, microfibril angle, and ring characteristics
of 20-year-old Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hay.) trees were examined. The trees came from different thinning and pruning treatments, but the practices showed no significant
effect on the investigated properties. The results showed that based on comparison with the literature, plantation-grown immature
Taiwania have noticeably lower average strength properties than mature trees of the same species. Wood density and bending
and compressive strengths were not related to either tracheid length or microfibril angle in young Taiwania. There were positive
relationships between bending strength and compressive strength. The wood density, ring width, earlywood width, earlywood
density, and latewood percentage were the most important predictors of strength by simple linear regressions. The wood density
and ring width/earlywood width may be considered as indicators for assessing the bending strength, while wood density and
latewood percentage were the best predictors of compressive strength by multiple linear regressions. 相似文献

We studied the effects of elevated temperature and carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) alone and together on wood anatomy of 20-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees. The study was conducted in 16 closed chambers, providing a factorial combination of two temperature regimes and two CO(2) concentrations (ambient and elevated), with four trees in each treatment. The climate scenario included a doubling of [CO(2)] and a corresponding increase of 2-6 degrees C in temperature at the site depending on the season. Anatomical characteristics analyzed were annual earlywood, latewood and ring widths, intra-ring wood densities (earlywood, latewood and mean wood density), tracheid width, length, wall thickness, lumen diameter, wall thickness:lumen diameter ratio and mass per unit length (coarseness), and numbers of rays, resin canals and tracheids per xylem cross-sectional area. Elevated [CO(2)] increased ring width in four of six treatment years; earlywood width increased in the first two years and latewood width in the third year. Tracheid walls in both the earlywood and latewood tended to become thicker over the 6-year treatment period when temperature or [CO(2)] was elevated alone, whereas in the combined treatment they tended to become thinner relative to the tracheids of trees grown under ambient conditions. Latewood tracheid lumen diameters were larger in all the treatments relative to ambient conditions over the 6-year period, whereas lumen diameters in earlywood increased only in response to elevated [CO(2)] and were 3-6% smaller in the treatments with elevated temperature than in ambient conditions. Tracheid width, length and coarseness were greater in trees grown in elevated than in ambient temperature. The number of resin canals per mm(2) decreased in the elevated [CO(2)] treatment and increased in the elevated temperature treatments relative to ambient conditions. The treatments decreased the number of rays and tracheids per mm(2) of cross-sectional area, the greatest decrease occurring in the elevated [CO(2)] treatment. It seemed that xylem anatomy was affected more by elevated temperature than by elevated [CO(2)] and that the effects of temperature were confined to the earlywood. 相似文献

The effect of strain on dry, clear Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) wood was studied by tensile testing along the cell axis and by in situ X-ray diffraction measurements. The mean
microfibril angle (MFA) was initially 3–12 degrees and did not decrease due to strain. Based on the positions of the reflections
200 and 004 of crystalline cellulose, cellulose chains elongated and the distance between the hydrogen bonded sheets of chains decreased
due to the strain. The elongation of the unit cell parallel to the cellulose chains was twice as high in juvenile wood as

In order to investigate the pyrolytic characteristics of the burning residue of fire-retardant wood, a multifunctional fire-resistance
test oven aimed at simulating the course of a fire was used to burn fire-retardant wood and untreated wood. Samples at different
distances from the combustion surface were obtained and a thermogravimetric analysis (TG) was applied to test the prrolytic
process of the burning residue in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The results showed that: 1) there was little difference between
fire-retardant wood and its residue in the initial temperature of thermal degradation. The initial temperature of thermal
degradation of the combustion layer in untreated wood was higher than that in the no burning wood sample; 2) the temperature
of the flame retardant in fire-retardant wood was 200°C in the differential thermogravimetry (DTG). The peak belonging to
the flame retardant tended to dissipate during the time of burning; 3) for the burning residue of fire-retardant wood, the
peak belonging to hemicellulose near 230°C in the DTG disappeared and there was a gentle shoulder from 210 to 240°C; 4) the
temperature of the main peaks of the fire-retardant wood and its burning residue in DTG was 100°C lower than that of the untreated
wood and its burning residue. The rate of weight loss also decreased sharply; 5) the residual weight of fire-retardant wood
at 600°C clearly increased compared with that of untreated wood. Residual weight of the burning residue increased markedly
as the heating temperature increased when burning; 6) there was a considerable difference with respect to the thermal degradation
temperature of the no burning sample and the burning residue between fire-retardant wood and untreated wood.

分别应用水、甲酰胺和二碘甲烷3种不同性质的液体,研究木材吸收液体的动力学过程及在毛细管和非毛细管2个方向的不同吸收特征。结果表明:木材吸收液体过程无论在毛细还是非毛细管方向都为三段式进行,其特征是初始和最后阶段为线性吸收,即具有零级动力学吸收的特征;而中间阶段则具有复杂的一级和二级吸收反应动力学的特征。根据吸收现象分析,液体的粘度、极性及Lewis酸碱反应性都将影响木材的吸收过程。根据所记录的动态吸收曲线,文中给出了木材吸收液体的动力学模型及参数。 相似文献

As chromated copper arsenate (CCA) contains copper, chromium and arsenic, waste CCA-treated wood must be separated from other treated wood because of environmental pollution by chromium and arsenic when it is incinerated and the regulation. Therefore, a method to identify CCA-treated wood was developed using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Using the LIBS apparatus assembled in our laboratory, plasma on a wood surface was generated by a 4?ns pulse of 1064?nm (55?mJ/mm2) emitted from Nd:YAG laser. Fluorescence from the plasma was collected by an ellipsoidal mirror and analyzed by a spectrometer in the range of 190–300?nm. The results showed that the 228.7?nm line from As and 267.6?nm line from Cr were useful for the identification of CCA-treated wood. As the discrimination capacity was confirmed by the elemental composition analysis by X-ray fluorescence, it was concluded that LIBS can specifically identify CCA-treated wood. 相似文献
