Summary Soil samples collected from oil-palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) fields of various ages and from adjacent bush fallow were analyzed for macronutrient elements and for total numbers of bacteria and fungi and the most probable number of algae. Nitrogenase activities of soil samples collected from 20-year-old oil-palm plantations were also determined. Oil-palm fields showed increases in total N and total algae but decreases in available P, total C, the base nutrient elements and total bacteria, compared to adjacent bush fallow, but these changes were not statistically significant except for exchangeable Ca. This indicates that oil-palm ecosystems can maintain soil fertility in line with those of fallow lands undergoing soil regeneration in the tropics. Oil-palm soil was also nitrogenase positive — an indication of potential N2-fixation. 相似文献

Summary The effect of inoculation with a selected isolate of Glomus etunicatum Becker and Gerdemann and one of G. intraradices Schenck and Smith on the growth and nutrient content of Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb. cv. Siratro and Aeschynomene americana L., at applied P levels of 10, 30, 60, and 120 kg ha-1, was studied under field conditions. At all P levels and for all harvests, the shoot dry mass of Siratro and A. americana were greater for the plants inoculated with the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi than the control plants. Differences between the VAM fungus-inoculated and the control plants were most marked between 30 and 90 kg ha-1 of applied P and diminished at 120 kg ha-1. At the first harvest of Siratro, the plants inoculated with G. etunicatum had a greater shoot dry mass than those inoculated with G. intraradices, for all levels of applied P. However, for subsequent harvest of Siratro and for the one harvest of A. americana the response of shoot dry mass to the two VAM fungi was equivocal. Fungal inoculation gave at least a 30% saving in the amount of P fertilizer required (40 kg ha-1) for the maximum yield. The plants inoculated with VAM fungi had a greater tissue concentration and total content of P and N than the control plants at low and intermediate levels of applied P. The percentage of root colonized by VAM fungi for the inoculated plants of the two legumes increased linearly with P additions up to 60 kg ha-1. The conclusion is that under amended (limed and fertilized) soil conditions, inoculation with selected VAM fungi can improve the establishement and growth of forage legumes in fields that contain ineffective populations of native VAM fungi. 相似文献

This study determined the cell density in the field and the biological activity of culturable phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) present in the Elaeis guineensis Jacq. rhizosphere at two locations in a commercial plantation. Promising isolates found in two soils under different agronomic management conditions were selected. We first calculated the cell density of cultivable PSMs grown in SRS medium (Sundara-Rao and Sinha, 1963) supplemented with the insoluble phosphate sources Ca3(PO4)2, AlPO4, and FePO4. Twenty-two bacteria, ten filamentous fungi, and eight yeast isolates were found. The 16 isolates with the clearest P solubilization halo in Petri dishes were selected to estimate their P solubilization potential in SRS medium with Ca3(PO4)2. No solubilization activity was registered using AlPO4 or FePO4 as the P sources. Ten of the isolates presented solubilization efficiencies between 20 and 82%. Some of these isolates showed high percentages of identity with the 16S and ITS rDNA sequences of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Klebsiella, Burkholderia, and Staphylococcus according to the NCBI and EzTaxon-e databases. The solubilization activity of the isolates was associated with a decrease in the pH and the release of organic acids, such as gluconic, citric, succinic, and acetic acids. Gluconic acid was mainly released by the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium, and these isolates also showed the highest solubilization activities (82 and 80%, respectively). Therefore, these isolates were selected as the most promising isolates present in the oil palm rhizosphere for phosphate solubilization. 相似文献

Summary Using two tussock grasses, Agropyron desertorum, a grazing-tolerant species, and A. spicatum, a grazing-sensitive species, we measured the responses of vesicular-arbuscular mycorhizae (VAM) to clipping and soil moisture status. The clipping was carried out over a 4-year period (1982–1985). For the soil moisture × clipping studies, a rainout shelter was used to create drought stress, and irrigation was used to create high moisture conditions over a 2-year period (1984 – 1985). No consistent patterns in VAM infection frequency and VAM fungal spore counts were observed, either between species or among treatments. Increased moisture tended to increase total root and total VAM length, but there were no consistent moisture × clipping effects. Nor did the phenology of the fungus follow consistent patterns: there were similar lengths of root containing vesicles and arbuscules in 1984, and predominantly vesicles in 1985. The greatest effect was a large difference in VAM activity between years regardless of treatment, despite our attempts to use extreme environmental conditions and a rigorous sampling design. The VAM of both plant species were highly correlated. We postulate that VAM are highly plastic and that they respond to environmental pressures that we do not yet understand. 相似文献

Abstract Methane flux was measured monthly from August 2002 to July 2003 at an oil palm plantation on tropical peatland in Sarawak, Malaysia, using a closed chamber technique. Urea was applied twice, once in November 2002 and once in May 2003. The monthly CH4 flux ranged from ?32.78 to 4.17 µg C m?2 h?1. Urea applications increased CH4 emissions in the month of application and emissions remained slightly higher a month later before the effect disappeared in the third month after application (i.e. back to CH4 uptake). This effect was the result of increased soil NH+ 4 content that was not immediately absorbed by the oil palm following urea application, which reduced the oxidation of CH4, resulting in its enhanced emission. By using the Cate–Nelson linear-plateau model, the critical soil NH+ 4 content causing CH4 emissions in the oil palm ecosystem was 42.75 mg kg?1 soil. However, the inhibitory effect of NH+ 4 on the oxidation of CH4 was mitigated by low rainfall and the pyrophosphate solubility index (PSI), where the former might increase oxidation of CH4 and the latter was a reflection of the low soluble substrate for methane production. Thus, the splitting and timing of urea applications are important not only to optimize oil palm yield, but also to reduce soil NH+ 4 content to minimize CH4 emissions and, therefore, its potential negative impact on the environment. 相似文献

Summary Strains of Bradyrhizobium influenced root colonization by a species of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM), and species of VAM influenced root nodulation by strains of Bradyrhizobium in pot experiments. In a field experiment, the effects of VAM on competition amongst inoculated bradyrhizobia were less evident, but inoculation with Bradyrhizobium strains increased root colonization by VAM. Certain VAM/Bradyrhizobium inoculum strain combinations produced higher nodule numbers. Plants grown without Bradyrhizobium and VAM, but supplied with ammonium nitrate (300 g ml–1) and potassium phosphate (16 g ml–1), produced higher dry-matter yields than those inoculated with both symbionts in the pot experiment. Inoculation with either symbiont in the field did not result in higher pod and haulm yields at harvest.ICRISAT Journal Article No. 886 相似文献

A total of 359 accessions of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) originating from 11 African countries (Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo DR, Tanzania, Angola, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea,
Ghana, Madagascar and Gambia) were characterized using the RFLP method using the standard Deli dura as the check. Genomic DNA from each sample was digested using five restriction enzymes and hybridized with four oil palm
cDNA probes. Data were analyzed using Biosys-1 computer software to calculate the genetic variability parameters. In general,
all the collections exhibited higher levels of diversity than the standard variety, Deli dura. The standard variety, Deli dura, lost 36 alleles as compared to the natural populations indicating a reduction in genetic variability. Material from Nigeria
showed the highest mean number of alleles per locus (1.9) and percentage of polymorphic loci (67.2%). These findings, combined
with others, suggest that Nigeria may be the center of diversity of wild oil palm. It further suggests that oil palm natural
populations maybe possessing adequate genetic variability that are potentially useful for improvement programs. 相似文献

Summary Pot-culture studies were carried out to examine the response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Glomus versiforme, singly and/or in combination, under varying levels of nitrogenous [(15NH4)2SO4] and soluble phosphatic (single superphosphate) fertilizers. The interaction between both the endophytes led to increased growth and nutrition of the barley plants. Roots from plants inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense and Glomus versiforme exhibited very low acetylene reduction activity. N2 fixation in the plants increased with the increase in plant growth but the mycorrhiza alone gave a low level of N2 fixation in the plants compared to combined inoculation with both the endophytes. 相似文献

Summary Cucumber was grown in a partially sterilized sand-soil mixture with the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus Glomus fasciculatum or left uninoculated. Fresh soil extract was places in polyvinyl chloride tubes without propagules of mycorrhizal fungi. Root tips and root segments with adhering soil, bulk soil, and soil from unplanted tubes were sampled after 4 weeks. Samples were labelled with [3H]-thymidine and bacteria in different size classes were measured after staining by acridine orange. The presence of VAM decreased the rate of bacterial DNA synthesis, decreased the bacterial biomass, and changed the spatial pattern of bacterial growth compared to non-mycorrhizal cucumbers. The [3H]-thymidine incorporation was significantly higher on root tips in the top of tubes, and on root segments and bulk soil in the center of tubes on non-mycorrhizal plants compared to mycorrhizal plants. At the bottom of the tubes, the [3H]-thymidine incorporation was significantly higher on root tips of mycorrhizal plants. Correspondingly, the bacterial biovolumes of rods with dimension 0.28–0.40×1.1–1.6 m, from the bulk soil in the center of tubes and from root segments in the center and top of tubes, and of cocci with a diameter of 0.55–0.78 m in the bulk soil in the center of tubes, were significantly reduced by VAM fungi. The extremely high bacterial biomass (1–7 mg C g-1 dry weight soil) was significant reduced by mycorrhizal colonization on root segments and in bulk soil. The incorporation of [3H]-thymidine was around one order of magnitude lower compared to other rhizosphere measurements, probably because pseudomonads that did not incorporate [3H]-thymidine dominated the bacterial population. The VAM probably decreased the amount of plant root-derived organic matter available for bacterial growth, and increased bacterial spatial variability by competition. Thus VAM plants seem to be better adapted to compete with the saprophytic soil microflora for common nutrients, e.g., N and P, compared to non-mycorrhizal plants. 相似文献

Summary We studied the effects of field application rates of three fungicides on spore germination and root infection in three species of Glomus. Bavistin (carbendazim) prevented germination of spores of G. monosporum and G. mosseae whereas Calixin (tridemorph) had no effect. Tilt Turbo (propiconazole) inhibited spore germination less than Bavistin. Spores of G. geosporum germinated in the presence of all three fungicides. Foliar applications of Bavistin alone and in a triple-spray programme significantly reduced infection of all three Glomus species in wheat roots grown in conditions of low P availability (2 mg P 1–1). Two fungicides with triazole derivatives, Sportak and Tilt Turbo, also decreased infection and the former significantly reduced spore production of all three Glomus species. Calixin-treated plants, however, showed increased infection levels, resulting in greater yields and greater foliar-P concentrations than control plants. Milgo (ethirimol) was not detrimental to the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) symbiosis when applied as a foliar spray. 相似文献

Summary The interaction between soil pH and inoculation with rhizobia and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) was studied in an industrially polluted soil contaminated with high levels of Zn and Cd. A silt loam soil (pH 6.7) was amended with Ca(OH)2 or elemental S to adjust the soil pH to 4.3, 5.3, 6.0, and 7.2. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was planted in each treated soil an subsequently inoculated with Rhizobium meliloti and/or a mixed VAM spore population. Alfalfa growing in soils at a pH of 4.3 and 5.3 failed to survive as a result of soil acidity and heavy metal toxicity. At the three higher pH values, growth and foliar N and P were significantly increased by inoculation with rhizobia or VAM. The greatest increase was observed when both VAM and rhizobia were inoculated together into the soil. With a soil pH of 6.0 and 6.7, the available heavy metal concentration in the soil was high and the VAM significantly decreased heavy metal uptake from these soils. The foliar concentration of Zn was reduced from 455 to 306 g g–1 by inoculation with VAM (pH 6.0). At the highest soil pH (7.2), however, available heavy metal concentrations were generally lower and NAM significantly increased the heavy metal uptake. The influence of VAM on heavy metal uptake thus appears to be partly a function of the available heavy metal content in the soil. 相似文献

Summary Red clover was grown in soil previously treated with P at various rates, and growth, nutrient uptake, nutrient uptake in relation to phosphorus values, and levels of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) infection were determined. The soil was a silty clay loam and Glomus lacteum was the only fungus colonizing the plant roots. An examination of the effects of various rates of P application and of VAM colonization on nutrient (P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, and Zn) uptake showed that the Mg : P ratio significantly increased and the Mn : P ratio significantly decreased with increasing VAM infection. It is concluded that in the Trifolium pratense-Glomus lacteum symbiosis, mycorrhizae improve Mg uptake and depress Mn uptake. 相似文献

Summary We studied the effects of field application rates of four herbicides (Avenge, Ceridor, Dicurane, and Harrier) on spore germination and infection of wheat roots by three species of Glomus grown under conditions of low P availability. Low concentrations of Ceridor (bifenox, mecoprop) and Harrier (mecoprop, ioxynil, clopyralid) inhibited spore germination while higher concentrations were stimulatory. Avenge (difenzoquat methyl sulphate) prevented spore germination completely, while Dicurane (chlortoluron) had no effect. The herbicide applications had no significant effect on the infection rates of any of the three fungi except Harrier on G. geosporum. The herbicide treatments did, however, affect plant growth and ear yields. Ceridor and Harrier increased ear yields, while Dicurane showed marked phytotoxic effects. 相似文献

Summary We examined the influence of a vesicular-arbuscular (VAM) fungus (Glomus pallidum Hall) on the competitive ability of introduced and native Bradyrhizobium strains to nodulate cowpeas [Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp]. Our experiments in non-sterilized soil revealed that in the presence of VAM fungus, introduced Bradyrhizobium spp. strains become more competitive than native rhizobia. For example, strain JRC29 occupied 59.2% of the total nodules when inoculated alone, but this figure increased to 71.2% when JRC29 was used in dual inoculations with VAM fungus. A similar pattern of enhanced competitiveness for nodule formation was observed with the two other strains in the presence of the VAM fungus. Our results suggest that the competitiveness of rhizobia can be enhanced by co-inoculating with a selected strain of a VAM fungus. 相似文献

Summary Soil pH, total organic C, total N, exchangeable Al, available P, CO2 evolution, microbial biomass C and N, phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities were determined in acid soils sampled under spruce subjected to acid deposition, before and after liming. A slight decrease in pH values was observed from the edge of a tree canopy to the base of the trunk in acid soils. Liming drastically reduced exchangeable Al and increased CO2 evolution, microbial biomass, and the metabolic quotient. The microbial biomass C to total organic C ratio increased after liming but did not reach 2%, the average value considered valid in soils where the C content is in equilibrium, that is when C inputs are equal to C outputs. The microbial biomass C:N ratio decreased after liming, thus indicating that bacteria became predominant over fungi when soil acidity decreased. Dehydrogenase activity but not phosphatase activity was increased by liming. The decrease in phosphatase activity was not completely related to the increase in available P, but was also dependent on microbial growth and the decrease in acid phosphatase, the predominant component of acid soils. 相似文献
