Effects on animal cleanliness and foot health of a new rubber-slat system for tied dairy cows, with the ability to drain faeces and urine, were studied in a 2-year controlled quasi-randomised trial in a Swedish university herd. Swedish Red and White cows were kept tied in 42 traditional long-stalls with rubber mats. In total, 82 cows were observed. In 21 stalls, the rearmost 0.74m of the solid stall floor was replaced with nine rubber-coated 53mm wide slats, divided by 29mm slots. The cleanliness was assessed subjectively weekly (year 1) or bi-weekly (year 2) by observations of the hind part of the body. Claw measurements and foot health in hind feet were assessed in connection with hoof trimmings at the beginning, middle and end of the housing period. The foot-health recordings were blinded to flooring. For the analysis of both cleanliness (1781 records, 73 cows) and foot health (240 records, 79 cows), logistic regression was applied, using marginal models and cow observations as repeated measures within each year. The risk of getting dirty on the rubber-slatted floor was significantly lower (odds ratio 0.12 for hind feet when short stall dividers were used, 0.39 for hind legs and 0.38 for thighs and udder), comparing with the solid stall floor. The prevalence of foot diseases in hind feet at trimming was significantly lower on the rubber slats (odds ratio 0.23 for dermatitis, 0.09 for heel horn erosion, and 0.34 for sole ulcer or sole or white line haemorrhage).  相似文献

The effect of daily exercise on tied dairy cows was ied in 65 initially first and second calvers of the Swedish Red and White dual-purpose breed in a 4 year experiment, starting in July 1985. Half of the group walked outdoors for 2–3 km day−1 from May to October and 400–800 m day−1 from November to April. The rest of the cows were constantly tied. Health in general was significantly and positively influenced by exercise, reducing the need for veterinary treatments. Analysis over time, within lactations, showed that the difference in the number of veterinary treatments occured entirely in Weeks 0–2 of lactation. During those weeks, non-exercised (NE) cows were more affected by calving-related diseases, mastitis and leg problems than the exercised (E) cows. The difference between groups increased with increasing lactation number. In addition, somatic cell count in the milk was higher for the NE cows in their first month of lactation. Among feeding-related diseases, the cases of bloat were notably more frequent among NE cows, whereas exercise did not influence the occurence of clinical or subclinical ketosis. Cases of non-infectious leg and hoof disorders were also notably more frequent in the NE group, which also showed a significantly more serious score for skin lesions on the hocks, measured on one occasion. Scores for sole ulcer were significantly higher for the E cows on one occasion of four, at which there were problems with the surface of the exercise area. The causes of exclusions strengthened the differences mentioned for treatments.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out with 24 pregnant cows and their calves. The cows were divided in 2 equal groups. One of these received a supplement of animal fat additional to the feed from 4 weeks a. p. to 6 weeks p. p. Apart from clinical examinations following laboratory investigations in the blood were performed: hematological parameters, cholesterol, lipids, free fatty acids, ketone bodies, protein, glucose, bilirubin, transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, Ca, Mg, P, K, Na, Cl. The addition of fat to the feed of cows influenced the energy metabolism of the cows, the body weight of the newborn ones and some hematological parameters (incl. protein) of the calves positively.  相似文献

Summary Both ovaries were collected from each of43 cows slaughtered during October, November and December in one town in north-western Nigeria. Macroscopic examination of serial sections of these organs showed that63 per cent of the cows from which they were taken had been undergoing active oestrous cycles at the time of slaughter. Eighty-four per cent of the group had had at least one calf, the mean calving rate lying between three and four calves per cow. The highest number of calves to one cow was seven. No correlation was found between horn rings and numbers of calvings. It is suggested that the examination of ovaries from slaughtered cattle is a valuable means of obtaining objective information on the herds of nomadic and other non-record keeping cattle owners in the developing countries.
Résumé Les deux ovaires de quarante trois vaches abattues au cours des mois octobre, novembre et de décembre dans un abattoir d'une ville du Nigeria du Nord ont été collectées. L'examen macroscopique de sections en séries de ces organes a montré que chez 63 p. 100 de vaches en question en état de pré-oestrus au moment de leur abattage. 90 p. 100 de ces vaches avaient eu au moins un veau et que la moyenne des vêlages se situait en général entre 3 et 4 veaux par vache. Le nombre de plus élevé de veaux constaté chez une seule vache, a été de 7 produits. Aucune corrélation n'a pu être mise en êvidence entre le nombre d'anneaux des cornes et celui des vêlages. Il est suggéré que l'examen des ovaires du bétail d'abattoir peut constituer en moyen valable pour obtenir une information objective sur la reproduction dans les troupeaux de nomades ainsi que chez les propriétaires d'animaux qui ne conservent aucune archive sur la reproduction de leur bétail dans les contrées en voie de développement.

Sumario Se colectaron ambos ovarios de 43 vacas sacrificadas durante Octubre, Noviembre y Diciembre en un pueblo al noreste de Nigeria. El exámen macroscópico de secciones seriadas de estos órganos mostraron que el 63 por ciento de las vacas sacrificadas habían estado menstruando activamente. El ochenta y cuatro por ciento del grupo había tenido como mínimo un ternero, la rata media de crías era entre tres y cuatro terneros por vaca. El número más alto de crías en una vaca fueron siete. No se encontró relación alguna entre los anillos de los cuernos y el número de crías. Se sugiere que el exámen de los ovarios de vacas sacrificadas, es un medio valioso para obtener información objectiva de las manadas nómadas y bovinos sin registro de países en evolución.

In comparison to monogastric species, ruminant animals are generally considered to be less susceptible to the adverse effects caused by contamination of feeds with mycotoxins. This is based on the assumption that the rumen flora degrade and inactivate mycotoxins, thus protecting the animal. A number of mycotoxins, however, resist rumen degradation, causing distinct clinical signs of intoxication. Moreover, due to their complex diet, dairy cows may be exposed to a varying number of mycotoxins, originating from different feed materials such as roughage and concentrates. Exposure to these complex mixtures of mycotoxins may result in unexpected health risks. Due to a pre-existing negative energy balance, cows in the transition period are considered to be particularly sensitive to the exposure to feeds contaminated with moulds, fungal spores and mycotoxins.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of three energy supply (E) levels [low (L), medium (M), high (H)], both pre‐partum (PRE) and post‐partum (POST), and their interactions on metabolic parameters and energy balance (EB) in dairy cows of three breeds. In both phases, E levels applied to a total of 81 multiparous cows of breeds Simmental (SI), Brown Swiss (BS) and Holstein–Friesian (HF;= 27 for each breed) were 75%, 100% and 125% of recommendations of the German Society of Nutrition Physiology, using a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments. During the pre‐calving period, serum concentrations of non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were higher for LPRE cows, and glucose concentrations were elevated for HPRE cows. During the lactation period, NEFA concentrations were greatest for treatment LPOST. Mean concentrations of β‐hydroxybutyrate (BHB) were highest for cows of the LPOST treatment, intermediate for MPOST and lowest for HPOST. Glucose concentrations were lower for LPOST cows. SI cows had lower BHB concentrations both pre‐ and post‐calving and higher glucose concentrations during early lactation than the other breeds. BHB concentration POST was highest for BS cows. Restricted feeding PRE resulted in a better energy status of cows fed above energy requirements POST (EPRE × EPOST interaction). HF cows had a higher EB pre‐calving, whereas SI cows had a less negative EB during early lactation, compared with the other breeds respectively. Correlations of serum NEFA, BHB and glucose concentrations with EB were strongest during the transition period. Results suggest that controlling energy intake during the dry period might be advantageous for the energy status of dairy cows after calving, whereas energy restriction in early lactation leads to metabolic stress. Evidence is provided of a clear relationship between EB and the blood metabolites NEFA and BHB, especially in the transition period.  相似文献

Abstract

This study investigated milk somatic cell count (SCC), polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and milk composition in dairy cows, which were kept in tie stalls, during the first days after pasture turnout. Thirty-five cows of the Swedish Red Breed, free of clinical signs of mastitis and with a geometric mean of SCC 67 × 103 cells/mL, were turned out to pasture after the morning milking on day 0 and then monitored for the next five days on pasture. Samples of cow composite milk were taken at every milking and analysed for SCC, PMN percentage of the total SCC and milk composition. There was a marked increase in both PMN proportion and SCC with the highest SCC value during the study recorded at the evening milking on day 0. The highest value in morning milk was observed on day 1. Milk SCC values in evening and morning milk declined after day 0 and day 1, respectively, but remained on a higher level compared with before turnout to pasture. Milk composition was only slightly altered. Since the changes in SCC and milk composition were of low magnitude, although statistically significant, these effects of pasture turnout can be considered as of minor importance for the milk quality.  相似文献

Multiparous beef (1/4 to 3/8 Bos indicus; n = 99) cows were managed to achieve low (BCS = 4.3 +/- 0.1; n = 50) or moderate (BCS = 6.1 +/- 0.1; n = 49) body condition (BC) to determine the influence of bovine (b) ST on the number of follicles, diameter of largest follicle, and serum concentrations of IGF-I, triiodothy-ronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and prolactin. Beginning 32 d postpartum, cows within each BC were assigned randomly to treatment with or without bST. Non-bST-treated cows received no treatment, and treated cows were administered bST (Posilac, 500 mg, s.c.) on d 32, 46, and 60 postpartum. On d 60, all cows received a controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device for 7 d and PGF(2alpha) at CIDR removal (CIDR-PGF(2alpha)). Blood samples (7 mL) were collected at each bST treatment and d 39 and 67 postpartum. Ultrasound was performed 1 d after CIDR-PGF(2alpha) to determine the number of small (2 to 9 mm) and large (>/=10 mm) follicles and the diameter of largest follicle. Cows treated with bST in low BC had increased (P < 0.05) IGF-I vs. low-BC non-bST-treated cows on d 39, 46, 60, and 67 postpartum. Prolactin and T3 were greater (P < 0.05) in moderate-BC than in low-BC cows on all sample dates. Thyroxine was greater (P < 0.001) in moderate-BC cows on d 46, 60, and 67 compared with low-BC cows. On d 67, bST-treated cows had greater (P < 0.05) T4 compared with non-bST-treated cows. Diameter of the largest follicle 1 d after CIDR-PGF(2alpha) was greater (P < 0.01) in anestrous cows treated with bST than for non-bST-treated anestrous cows. The investigation was carried out on 12 cows and their calves. At the time of 3 months before parturition and 7 days after parturition metabolic alkalosis one provoked with the high protein feed. The laboratory investigations dependent of determinations on the rumen content the pH, NH3, volatile fatty, acids, the protozoa, bacteria, total gas CO2 and CH4. On the arterial and venous blood on determination the pH, BE, sO2, pO2, HCO3 and coefficient of consumption of the oxygen, and on the venous blood the levels of Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, total proteins, albumins and globulins, cholesterol, glucose, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase and urea. In the colostrum and in milk one determined the pH, potential acidosis--degree SH, proper weight, proteins, dried mas of milk, time of coagulation in the presence of rennin, Na, K, Ca, Cl, total fats and their composition with different fatty acids. No existed truly changes of clinical signs, only feces was sickly. The metabolic alkalosis of cows decreased the consumption of oxygen across the tissue, deficient of the energy, disorders of water-electrolyte and acid-base balances. The calves form cows with metabolic alkalosis delivered also with metabolic alkalosis, with the symptoms of achondroplasia and degeneration of the liver and other organs. Metabolic alkalosis of cows influenced on the quality of colostrum and milk. The colostrum gained from cows with alkalosis caused of disturbance of gastrointestinal tract and diarrhea presence.  相似文献

Injuries around the tarsal joint are common in dairy cows kept in tie stalls. This study investigated the influence of the frequency and duration of outdoor exercise on the prevalence of hock lesions in tied Swiss dairy cows. Over a 1-year period (from January to December), cows on 66 farms were examined a total of six times (once every 2 months) for the number and severity of hock lesions (hairless patches, scabs and open wounds, swellings). The prevalence of scabs and wounds (mean 2.1 scabs per cow and farm, range 0.3-4.1) was negatively associated with the duration of outdoor exercise, and positively associated with its frequency. It was also significantly affected by the time of visit and the type of bedding (straw being better than other materials). With increasing length of the lying area, the prevalence of scabs and wounds decreased. Based on the interpretation of the final model, it is suggested that a minimum of 50h spent outdoors over a 4-week period is necessary to have a marked result on the prevalence of hock lesions.  相似文献

Cows are often housed in tie-sheds for some part of the year (from 20 to 80% of adult cows in European countries). By contrast, regulations aiming at improving animal welfare generally provide for more opportunity to express behavior and so limit tethering (the European directive for sows). To inform current debate on whether cows should be tethered from an animal welfare point of view, 2 experiments were conducted to determine whether cows were motivated to walk (if their walking motivation was thwarted by tethering) and whether this frustration resulted in acute or chronic stress. In Exp. 1, fifteen cows were housed in tie-stalls for 1, 3, 9, or 27 d or loose-housed in a pen equipped with free-stalls for 27 d according to a Latin square design. On d 28, cows were observed in an 80-m(2) arena where they could walk or run for 10 min. In Exp. 2, fifteen cows were either loose-housed or tie-housed with or without 1 h of daily access to an exercise area according to a Latin square design (treatment duration of 27 d). On d 28, cows were observed in the test arena for 10 min as in Exp. 1. In addition, in Exp. 2, milk was sampled twice weekly for cortisol concentrations and cows underwent a chronic stress test (challenge with ACTH, followed by blood samples for cortisol concentrations). When they were tied with no access to exercise, cows displayed a greater locomotor activity in the test arena (time spent walking x 1.4 in Exp. 1, P < 0.05; time spent trotting x 5 in Exp. 2, P < 0.05), whatever the duration of tie-housing. Regular exercise caused locomotor activity in the arena test to revert to levels observed when cows were loose-housed. Basal cortisol concentrations in milk decreased with time whatever the housing condition (P < 0.001). This decrease was more marked when cows were tied than when they were loose-housed (P < 0.05). Cortisol responses to ACTH were similar between treatments. Adult cows are motivated to walk, and tethering thwarts this motivation. However, the frustration produced by tethering does not result in either acute or chronic physiological stress responses. We recommend that cows housed in tie-sheds be given regular access to an exercise area.  相似文献
