Changes in the soil water regime, predicted as a consequence of global climate change, might influence the N cycle in temperate forest soils. We investigated the effect of decreasing soil water potentials on gross ammonification and nitrification in different soil horizons of a Norway spruce forest and tested the hypotheses that i) gross rates are more sensitive to desiccation in the Oa and EA horizon as compared to the uppermost Oi/Oe horizon and ii) that gross nitrification is more sensitive than gross ammonification. Soil samples were adjusted by air drying to water potentials from about field capacity to around −1.0 MPa, a range that is often observed under field conditions at our site. Gross rates were measured using the 15N pool dilution technique. To ensure that the addition of solute label to dry soils and the local rewetting does not affect the results by re-mineralization or preferential consumption of 15N, we compared different extraction and incubation times.T0 times ranging from 10 to 300 min and incubation times of 48 h and 72 h did not influence the rates of gross ammonification and nitrification. Even small changes of water potential decreased gross ammonification and nitrification in the O horizon. In the EA horizon, gross nitrification was below detection limit and the response of the generally low rates of gross ammonification to decreasing water potentials was minor. In the Oi/Oe horizon gross ammonification and nitrification decreased from 37.5 to 18.3 mg N kg−1 soil d−1 and from 15.4 to 5.6 mg N kg−1 soil d−1 when the water potential decreased from field capacity to −0.8 MPa. In the Oa horizon gross ammonification decreased from 7.4 to 4.0 mg N kg−1 soil d−1 when the water potential reached −0.6 MPa. At such water potential nitrification almost ceased, while in the Oi/Oe horizon nitrification continued at a rather high level. Hence, only in the Oa horizon nitrification was more sensitive to desiccation than ammonification. Extended drought periods that might result from climate change will cause a reduction in gross N turnover rates in forest soils even at moderate levels of soil desiccation.  相似文献

In temperate forest soils, N net mineralization has been extensively investigated during the growing season, whereas N cycling during winter was barely addressed. Here, we quantified net ammonification and nitrification during the dormant season by in situ and laboratory incubations in soils of a temperate European beech and a Norway spruce forest. Further, we compared temperature dependency of N net mineralization in in situ field incubations with those from laboratory incubations at controlled temperatures. From November to April, in situ N net mineralization of the organic and upper mineral horizons amounted to 10.9 kg N (ha · 6 months)–1 in the spruce soil and to 44.3 kg N (ha · 6 months)–1 in the beech soil, representing 65% (beech) and 26% (spruce) of the annual above ground litterfall. N net mineralization was largest in the Oi/Oe horizon and lowest in the A and EA horizons. Net nitrification in the beech soil [1.5 kg N (ha · 6 months)–1] was less than in the spruce soil [5.9 kg N (ha · 6 months)–1]. In the range of soil temperatures observed in the field (0–8°C), the temperature dependency of N net mineralization was generally high for both soils and more pronounced in the laboratory incubations than in the in situ incubations. We suggest that homogenization of laboratory samples increased substrate availability and, thus, enhanced the temperature response of N net mineralization. In temperate forest soils, N net mineralization during the dormant season contributes substantially to the annual N cycling, especially in deciduous sites with large amounts of litterfall immediately before the dormant season. High Q10 values of N net mineralization at low temperatures suggest a huge effect of future increasing winter temperature on the N cycle in temperate forests.  相似文献

Examination of three forest soils from Malaysia using the soil incubation technique suggests that nitrification was not inhibited in these oligotrophic soils. Nitrification rates were between 40 and 750 ngN produced g?1 dry weight soil day?1 of incubation. Addition of phenolic metabolites (tannic acid) and leaf filtrates from hill and lowland forest litter did not significantly inhibit nitrification. Addition of sucrose (1% w/w carbon source) decreased nitrification but not ammonification.  相似文献

Forest floors in the temperate climate zone are frequently subjected to strong changes in soil moisture, but the consequences for the soil N cycle are poorly known. In a field experiment we tested the hypotheses that soil drying leads to a decrease of gross N turnover and that natural rewetting causes a pulse of gross N turnover and an increase of N leaching from the forest floor. A further hypothesis was that optimal water availability induced by irrigation causes maximum N turnover and N leaching. Replicated control, throughfall exclusion and irrigation plots were established in a Norway spruce forest to simulate different precipitation patterns during a growing season. Gross N turnover rates were determined in undisturbed soil cores from Oi + Oe and Oa + EA horizons by the 15N pool dilution technique. Forest floor percolates were periodically collected by suction plates. After 142 mm throughfall was excluded, the median soil water potential at the throughfall exclusion plots increased from pF 1.9 to 4.5 in the Oi + Oe horizon and from pF 1.8 to 3.8 in the Oa + EA horizon. Gross ammonification ranged from 14 to 45 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the Oi + Oe horizon and from 4.6 to 11.4 mg N kg−1 soil day−1 in the Oa + EA horizon. Gross ammonification of both horizons was smallest in the throughfall exclusion plots during the manipulation, but the differences between all treatments were not statistically significant. Gross nitrification in both horizons was very small, ranging from 1.6 to 11.1 mg N kg−1 soil day−1. No effects of decreasing water potential and rewetting on gross nitrification rates were observed because of the small rates and huge spatial variations. Irrigation had no effect as the differences from the control in soil water potential remained small. N leaching from the forest floor was not affected by the treatments. Our findings suggest that ammonification in forest floors continues at considerable rates even at small water potentials. The hypotheses of increased N turnover and N leaching following rewetting of dry forest floor or irrigation were not confirmed.  相似文献

Dehydrogenase activity in Mediterranean forest soils   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:5
The dehydrogenase activity (DHA) in the upper 10 cm of forest soils was measured in three experimental plots (1 ha) in Los Alcornocales Natural Park (southern Spain). In each plot, a sylviculture treatment of thinning and shrub-clearing had been previously carried out in one half, while the other half was left as a forest control. Soil samples were taken during the dry season (July 2000) and after the first autumn rains (October 2000). The DHA of forest soil in autumn [527끭 nmol p-iodonitrotetrazolium formazan (INTF) g-1 h-1] was almost double that in summer (289ᇳ nmol INTF g-1 h-1), for one of the studied plots. During the dry season, DHA of forest control soils (324ᇩ nmol INTF g-1 h-1) was higher than in the thinned and shrub-cleared forest (253ᇱ nmol INTF g-1 h-1). During the autumn (wet season), however, the effects of the sylvicultural practices on the soil dehydrogenase were negligible. Significant differences in DHA were found between the three sites. Multiple regression analysis identified pH as the best predictor of DHA of these soils. Other soil properties (pH, K, Ca, Mg, and soil moisture) also showed significant correlations with DHA. In addition, clay content appeared to enhance the enzyme activity. Our results suggest that thinning and shrub-clearing in Mediterranean forests seem to affect negatively the soil DHA, and their impact is more marked during the dry season. However, season and site effects are better determinants of DHA than management practices.  相似文献

Nitrogen mineralization and denitrification potential in litter were measured during a dry and a wet period in a Bornean Lowland Evergreen Rain Forest (LERF) and two nearby Heath Forests (HF) of contrasting stature. Nitrification was very low or non-existent in all forest types and ammonification was the major constituent of nitrogen (N) mineralization. Rates of net N mineralization in the HFs on infertile sandy soils were lower than in the LERF on a more nutrient-rich clay soil or other LERFs, both during dry and wet conditions. We attribute the differences to the lower litter quality in the HFs compared to LERF. When dissolved organic nitrogen (DON-N) was included, N uptake was the same (15-17 μg g−1 d−1) in all three forest types. We conclude that N availability is the same in all three forest types and that N deficiency is not the reason for the reduced stature of Heath Forests compared to LERF. All three-forest types had denitrifiers present in the ectorganic layers but denitrification will only play a minor role in the N-cycle as nitrification rates were very low.  相似文献

Intact soil cores from a montane tropical rain forest site in the Atherton Tablelands (Kauri Creek) and from a lowland tropical rain forest site in the Coastal Lowlands (Bellenden Ker), Queensland, Australia were investigated during different hygric seasons for the magnitude of gross nitrification rates using the Barometric Process Separation technique (BaPS). Pronounced seasonal variations of gross nitrification rates were found at both sites with highest values during the transition period between dry and wet season (montane site: 24.0 mg N (kg SDW)—1 d—1; lowland site: 13.1 mg N (kg SDW)—1 d—1) and significantly lower rates of gross nitrification during the dry and wet season. Rates of gross nitrification were always higher at the montane site than at the lowland site, but the opposite was found for N2O emissions. The results indicated that the high losses of N2O at the lowland tropical rain forest site may be contributed largely by high denitrification activity due to its wetter and warmer climate as compared to the dryer and colder climate at the montane tropical rain forest site. This conclusion was supported by analysis of cell numbers of microbes involved in N‐cycling. Higher numbers of denitrifiers were present at the lowland site, whereas higher numbers of nitrifiers were found at the montane site.  相似文献

Nitrogen mineralisation in soils of various forest sites (pine plantation, natural and thinned oak) at Uluda? University campus in Bursa, Turkey was investigated continuously over a year by the field incubation method. Net nitrogen mineralisation and nitrification rates varied depending on sampling dates. Although nitrogen mineralisation and nitrification rates increased in the spring and summer months, there was no seasonal variation in the soils of the examined forests. Annual net nitrate (NO3?–N) accumulation in the upper soil layer (0–5 cm) was higher in Oak I and Oak II (14 kg ha y?1 and 12 kg ha y?1) than in the pine plantation (8 kg ha y?1). While annual net NO3?–N accumulation (0–5 cm) varied between the oak forests (possibly due to forest management practices), annual net Nmin values were similar in these forests. No significant correlation was found between the examined soil parameters and net nitrification and mineralisation rates in the soils (P > 0.05). These results indicate that tree species and forest management practices play important roles in N cycling in forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract

We compared estimates of soil nitrogen (N) mineralization rates using the buried bag and PVC core methods in an ongoing investigation of the effects of earthworms and N fertilizer sources on agroecosystem N dynamics. Over a seven‐month period, we paired monthly buried bag and PVC core soil incubations within research plots receiving one of three N treatments (inorganic, legume, or manure fertilizers) and with manipulated earthworm populations (reduced, ambient, or increased numbers). Soil moisture within both the buried bags and the PVC cores fluctuated in response to changes in the surrounding soil, violating assumptions of the buried bag method that soil moisture remains constant during incubation. For both methods, overall CV's for net ammonification, nitrification, and N mineralization rates were very high (104 ‐ 628%). Overall, results for the two methods were significantly correlated for net ammonification (r = 0.89), net nitrification (r = 0.58), and net N mineralization (r = 0.24). In general, the two methods yielded similar seasonal estimates of net N mineralization and nitrification. However, on one occasion in the plots with the inorganic N treatment, buried bag estimates of net N mineralization were significantly higher than the PVC core estimates (1.5 versus ‐0.4 mg N‐kg‐1 soil‐d1, respectively). Under some conditions, the two methods may lead to quite different interpretations of soil N mineralization processes.  相似文献

Freezing and thawing may substantially influence the rates of C and N cycling in soils, and soil frost was proposed to induce NO losses with seepage from forest ecosystems. Here, we test the hypothesis that freezing and thawing triggers N and dissolved organic matter (DOM) release from a forest soil after thawing and that low freezing temperatures enhance the effect. Undisturbed soil columns were taken from a soil at a Norway spruce site either comprising only O horizons or O horizons + mineral soil horizons. The columns were subjected to three cycles of freezing and thawing at temperatures of –3°C, –8°C, and –13°C. The control columns were kept at constant +5°C. Following the frost events, the columns were irrigated for 20 d at a rate of 4 mm d–1. Percolates were analyzed for total N, mineral N, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The total amount of mineral N extracted from the O horizons in the control amounted to 8.6 g N m–2 during the experimental period of 170 d. Frost reduced the amount of mineral N leached from the soil columns with –8°C and –13°C being most effective. In these treatments, only 3.1 and 4.0 g N m–2 were extracted from the O horizons. Net nitrification was more negatively affected than net ammonification. Severe soil frost increased the release of DOC from the O horizons, but the effect was only observed in the first freeze–thaw cycle. We found no evidence for lysis of microorganisms after soil frost. Our experiment did not confirm the hypothesis that soil frost increases N mineralization after thawing. The total amount of additionally released DOC was rather low in relation to the expected annual fluxes.  相似文献

Except where nitrate is added to the soil artificially, nitrate is leached from forest soils only if it is produced. Although the factors influencing nitrification have been widely studied, nitrification activity still cannot be simply predicted from ecosystem characteristics. In France, about half of the present forest area was agricultural in 1850. Previous work suggested that former cultivation could be a major factor influencing nitrogen availability in forest soils. Using laboratory incubations, we compared the net production of ammonium and nitrate in soils from formerly manured lands planted with conifers 70–100 years ago with that in soils of surrounding ancient coniferous forests. Net nitrate production, available P content, and natural abundance of nitrogen 15, δ15N, were greater in soils from formerly manured plots than other land, whereas the C:N ratio of the soil was less. The difference in net nitrate production between previously manured sites and adjacent ancient forests was related to differences in δ15N values in the soil but not evidently to other soil properties. Because soil δ15N increases with the intensity of organic manuring, these results suggest that nitrification in forest soils depends on previous manurial practices under agriculture. In this context, the soil δ15N might be used as an indicator of both previous agricultural land use and potential nitrification. Because a significant proportion of West European forests grow on previously cultivated soils, past land use should be taken into account when evaluating the risks of nitrate leaching from forests.  相似文献

The impact of land-use change on soil nitrogen (N) transformations was investigated in adjacent native forest (NF), 53 y-old first rotation (1R) and 5 y-old second rotation (2R) hoop pine (Araucaia cunninghamii) plantations. The 15N isotope dilution method was used to quantify gross rates of N transformations in aerobic and anaerobic laboratory incubations. Results showed that the land-use change had a significant impact on the soil N transformations. Gross ammonification rates in the aerobic incubation ranged between 0.62 and 1.78 mg N kg−1 d−1, while gross nitrification rates ranged between 2.1 and 6.6 mg N kg−1 d−1. Gross ammonification rates were significantly lower in the NF and the 1R soils than in the 2R soils, however gross nitrification rates were significantly higher in the NF soils than in the plantation soils. The greater rates of gross nitrification found in the NF soil compared to the plantation soils, were related to lower soil C:N ratios (i.e. more labile soil N under NF). Nitrification was found to be the dominant soil N transformation process in the contrasting forest ecosystems. This might be attributed to certain site conditions which may favour the nitrifying community, such as the dry climate and tree species. There was some evidence to suggest that heterotrophic nitrifiers may undertake a significant portion of nitrification.  相似文献

The herbicide glyphosate was sprayed aerially on a section of conifer forest in Atlantic Canada that had been previously clearcut and reforested. Glyphosate was then tested for effects on ammonification, nitrification, and denitrification for a period of 8 months by comparing microbial activity in treated and untreated zones of the clay loam forest soil and the overlying decomposing litter, both with a pH of 3.8. With ammonification, there was generally a stimulation of activity in both the forest litter (FL) and forest soil (FS) that had been exposed to glyphosate during spraying. Nitrification rates in FL and FS were very low and glyphosate had no appreciable stimulatory or inhibitory effect on nitrification. Although glyphosate stimulated denitrification in a few instances, it generally had no significant effect on denitrification activity in FL and FS exposed during spraying. With all processes, microbial activity in FL was significantly greater than that in FS. Laboratory bioassays were also performed with FL and FS, as well as two silt loam (pH 5.8 and 6.4) and one sandy loam (pH 6.8) agricultural soils, using glyphosate concentrations up to 200 times higher than field application rates. With ammonification and denitrification, glyphosate generally stimulated activity at all levels tested and in all soil used. Glyphosate stimulated ammonification by 50% at concentrations ranging from 140 to 550 μg g?1 for the soils and >4000 μg g?1 for FL. With denitrification, the corresponding herbicide levels were approximately 2250 μg g?1 for FS, > 10,000 for FL, and 450 for an agricultural soil. With nitrification, it was estimated that glyphosate concentrations greater than 1000 to 2000 μg g?1 would be required to cause a 50% inhibition of activity. The careful use of glyphosate in forestry should have no toxic effects on N cycling in soils.  相似文献

The total mineralization of nitrogen in the AO-A1 (0–6 cm), A1 (6–11 cm), and A2 (11–21 cm) horizons of a soddy pale-podzolic soil under an oxalis birch forest in Yaroslavl oblast was measured from May to November in 2009 and 2010 and comprised 6.7 ± 0.9, 3.0 ± 0.4, and 5.5 ± 0.6 g of N/m2 in 2009 and 5.6 ± 0.5, 2.5 ± 0.2, and 2.1 ± 0.5 g of N/m2 in 2010, respectively. The total nitrification reached 0.4 ± 0.1, 1.1 ± 0.2, and 1.4 ±0.1 g of N/m2 in 2009 and 1.0, 0.6, and 0.7 g of N/m2 in 2010. Overall, the amount of mineralized nitrogen in the 21-cm-deep soil layer in 2009 and 2010 constituted 15.2 ± 1.1 and 10.2 ± 0.7 g of N/m2, respectively. The contribution of nitrification to the nitrogen mineralization amounted to 20%. The seasonal variations in the soil temperature and moistening affected the concentrations of ammonium in the upper horizons and the accumulation of ammonium in the AO-A1 and A1 horizons. The combined effect of the temperature and moisture controlled the ammonification in the AO-A1 horizon (R = 0.83 at p = 0.16 in 2010), the nitrification in all the studied horizons (R = 0.86 at p= 0.13 in 2009), and the ammonia emission from the soil surface (R = 0.92 at p = 0.06 in 2010). A correlation between the seasonal dynamics of the ammonification and the CO2 emission was found for the AO-A1 horizon (r = 0.64 at p = 0.16 in 2010) and was absent in the deeper layers of the soil profile. The nitrogen losses from the soil surface due to the ammonia emission in the investigated periods reached 95 ± 31 g of N/ha (2009) and 33 ± 30 g of N/ha (2010).  相似文献

SW Sweden has very acidic forest soils because of deposition ofair-borne pollutants. Large-scale liming and fertilization have been proposed as countermeasures against a possible future development of forest decline. To test the effects of suggested treatments, liming (3 or 6 t ha1) and fertilization with easily soluble PK (25 or 50 kg P, 80 or 160 kg K ha1) or N(20 kg N ha1 annually in the form of NH4 NO3) were applied in different combinations in four experiments in 30–60 yr-old Picea abies forests in SW Sweden. Four yearsafter the initial application of the fertilizers, samples were taken from the O-horizon and the two uppermost 5 cm thick layersof the mineral soil. Their pH(H2O) and easily extractable Ca, Mg, K, P and inorganic N contents were analyzed. Samples werealso incubated to estimate net N mineralization and potential nitrification rates. Liming increased the pH by 0.6–1 unit in the O-horizon, and by 0.1 unit in the mineral soil. The Ca + Mg content increased by 15–25 kmolc ha1 (4–8 foldincrease) in the O-horizon of the limed plots, while an increaseof 5 kmolc ha1 (two-fold increase) was observed in theuppermost 5 cm of the mineral soil. Liming did not affect extractable P, K or inorganic N contents. Net N mineralization and potential nitrification rates in the O-horizon were enhanced 1.5- and 6-fold, respectively, by liming, but it had no apparenteffect in the mineral soil. N fertilization caused a slight increase (1.5 kg ha1) in the content of inorganic N, buthad no effects on the other variables measured. The amount ofextractable P was raised by 16 kg ha1 in plots given the high P dose (50 kg ha1), but no other effects of PK fertilization were detected.  相似文献

Soil samples were collected from litter, humus and mineral soil layers to a depth of 50 cm in 37–42 year-old limed and unlimed plots in one beech and three spruce stands in S Sweden for determination of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools, C and N mineralization rates and nitrification rates. The samples were sifted while still fresh and incubated at a constant temperature (15°C) and soil moisture (50 % WHC) for 110–180 days with periodic subsamplings. The C and N pools in the uppermost soil layers were significantly lower in plots limed with 9–10 t CaCO3 ha?1 than in unlimed plots, whereas the pools in the deeper mineral soil did not differ markedly between the treatments. In the whole soil profile, the C and N pools had, on average, decreased by 16% (P<0.05) and 11% (P>0.05), respectively, after 40 yrs. The smaller reduction in N pools resulted in significantly lower C:N ratios and increased N immobilization in the limed spruce plots but not in the limed beech plot. C and net N mineralization rates were increased in some of the limed plots and decreased in others. This indicates that liming can still have a stimulatory effect after 40 yrs in some soils. The nitrification potential was increased in the limed plots. Liming did not increase tree growth in the stands investigated. We conclude that liming with high doses of CaCO3 is likely to reduce pools of soil C and possibly even soil N in relation to unlimed areas in spruce and beech forests in S Sweden. If trees in limed stands do not respond with better growth, the treatment will thus result in a net ecosystem loss of C and N in relation to unlimed areas. It was not possible to conclude whether the effects of low doses of lime would be similar to those of high doses.  相似文献

The effect of high nitrogen (N) depositions on forest ecosystems is an important concern in North America and may lead to N saturation of forest ecosystems and contribute to soils and surface water acidification. In this study, nitrogen dynamics in the FH layers of a sugar maple (SM), a balsam fir (BF) and a black spruce (BS) forest was characterized using a short term 15N isotopic pool dilutions approach and mid-term FH material incubation both in situ and in the laboratory. The short term dilutions approach indicated that the mean residence times of and in the FH material of the three sites were low (<1 d). The amount of inorganic nitrogen () recycled annually within the exchangeable forest floor reservoir was between one and two orders of magnitude larger than the annual atmospheric N deposition found at each of the sites. The BS site was clearly distinct than the two other forest types in that net N mineralization was negligible, even in absence of root uptake, suggesting that soil microorganisms were severely N limited. While net nitrification was not observed within the FH material of the BF site, did accumulate in the FH of the SM despite a low pH of 3.72 presumably because of heterotrophic nitrification or as a result of acid-tolerant autotrophic nitrification. The difference in N dynamics between the sites were most probably caused by dominant tree species. Transformation rates of inorganic N were higher in SM, followed by BF and BS stands. Given that the potential to mineralize inorganic N matches with a superimposed N atmospheric deposition gradient in Québec, the sugar maple forest is more likely to be affected by N saturation than coniferous forests.  相似文献

Phosphatases are important in the mineralization of organically-bound phosphorous. Although phosphatases have been studied extensively in agricultural soils, there are few reports on phosphatase activity in forest soils, and no information on the effect of forest management practices, such as thinning and N-fertilization, on phosphomonoesterase (PME) activities. In the present study, the (PME) activity of forest soils from Shawnigan Lake and Jordan River (mg p-nitrophenol released g−1 dry soil h−1 was highest in the forest floor horizon (L-H) and decreased with depth to 60 cm in mineral soil horizons. Addition of orthophosphate and urea during the assay of PME demonstrated these chemicals competitively depressed PME activity. With Shawnigan Lake soil (L-H), the minimum rate (Vmax) of PME activity was 5.71 mg p-nitrophenol released g−1 dry soil h−1. For Jordan River, Vmax was 3.33 mg p-nitrophenol released g−1h−1. Incubation of L-H horizon of both soils, fumigated or non-fumigated, at 30°C for up to 40 days after rewetting resulted in an initial reduction in PME activity. Comparatively, the PME activity of Jordan River soil recovered faster than that of the Shawnigan Lake soil whose activity remained very low at the end of the incubation. In field plots where trees were thinned and urea and ammonium nitrate fertilizers had been applied 2 yr previously, assays for PME demonstrated that urea fertilization and thinning depressed PME activity while ammonium nitrate did not. This study demonstrated (1) PME activity depended on soil geographic location and depth, and (2) fertilization of forests with phosphates and urea appeared to reduce PME activity and thus may have the potential to depress the mineralization of organic-P.  相似文献

Samples of strongly acid forest litter and humus from beneath Sitka spruce, heather, Scots pine and larch from two sites in north-east Scotland were incubated aerobically at 20°C in the laboratory. At the Glen Tanar site, spruce litter and larch humus showed significant nitrification and ammonification whereas spruce humus and Scots pine humus produced only NH4+-N. Heather humus showed no net mineralization. At the Fetteresso site, application of fertilizer N, P and K to Sitka spruce up to 3 yr previously, significantly stimulated the production of NO3-N in both litter and humus.Amendment of the samples with organic N as peptone caused significant increases in NO3-N production in those samples that already showed nitrification. The increases in NO3-N generally represented a low proportion of the added peptone-N. Amendment with NH4+-N as (NH4)2SO4 either had no effect or significantly reduced NO3-N production (in larch humus). The results suggest the occurrence of heterotrophic nitrification in some of these forest samples.Net immobilization of NH4+-N was typically greater in NH4+-N amended than in peptone amended samples, except for heather humus which showed complete immobilization of both N sources.Total mineral N produced at the end of the aerobic incubation was correlated (P < 0.01) with NH4+-N produced during a 30-day anaerobic incubation at 30°C. Net NO3-N production was greater in litter than in the corresponding humus samples and was correlated (P < 0.001) with initial organic N soluble in 1 m KCl.  相似文献

The occurrence of nitrification in some acidic forest soils is still a subject of debate. Identification of main nitrification pathways in acidic forest soils is still largely unknown. Acidic yellow soil (Oxisol) samples were selected to test whether nitrification can occur or not in acidic subtropical pine forest ecosystems. Relative contributions of autotrophs and heterotrophs to nitrification were studied by adding selective nitrification inhibitor nitrapyrin. Soil NH4+-N concentrations decreased, but NO3--N concentrations increased significantly for the no-nitrapyrin control during the first week of incubation, indicating that nitrification did occur in the acidic subtropical soil. The calculated net nitrification rate was 0.49 mg N kg-1 d-1 for the no-nitrapyrin control during the first week of incubation. Nitrapyrin amendment resulted in a significant reduction of NO3--N concentration. Autotrophic nitrification rate averaged 0.28 mg N kg-1 d-1 and the heterotrophic nitrification rate was 0.21 mg N kg-1 d-1 in the first week. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) abundance increased slightly during incubation, but nitrapyrin amendment significantly decreased AOB amoA gene copy numbers by about 80%. However, the ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) abundance showed significant increases only in the last 2 weeks of incubation and it was also decreased by nitrapyrin amendment. Our results indicated that nitrification did occur in the present acidic subtropical pine forest soil, and autotrophic nitrification was the main nitrification pathway. Both AOA and AOB were the active biotic agents responsible for autotrophic nitrification in the acidic subtropical pine forest soil.  相似文献
