With recent public attention focused on chemical residues in food, the managing of plant disease organisms without the use of conventional chemical fungicides or bactericides can sometimes be a challenge. The main aim of this study was the evaluation of the antifungal activity of the essential oils of Ocimum basilicum, Origanum vulgare, Rosmarinus officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Prostrates’, Salvia officinalis and their major constituents (carvacrol, thymol, linalool, eucalyptol) against the fungus Pilidiella granati. The results showed that the essential oil vapour of O. basilicum, S. officinalis, R. officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Prostrates’, O. vulgare had fungicidal activities against the mycelial growth and conidia germination of P. granati, the pathogen causing postharvest fruit rots in pomegranate. However, in vivo experiments, only the essential oils of O. vulgare and O. basilicum controlled this fungus effectively with the essential oil of O. vulgare to being more effective at the same rates. Analysis showed a high number of compounds in each essential oil, with carvacrol, eucalyptol, linalool and thymol predominating. Thymol and carvacrol primarily and linalool secondary showed antifungicidal activity against P. granati. These results represent an important step towards the goal using essential oils from O. basilicum, S. officinalis, R. officinalis, R. officinalis ‘Prostrates”, O. vulgare and their constituents carvacrol and thymol to control of the pathogen P. granati of pomegranate.  相似文献

The characterization of the essential oil profile together with the sensory analysis of five samples of oregano, four of which cultivated in different areas of Sicily and one of commercial origin, have been carried out. The Sicilian cultivated samples belong to Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum (Link) Béguinot (syn. O. heracleoticum L.), the most typical Sicilian oregano species. The essential oils, obtained by hydrodistillation, have been analysed by GC-FID-MS. On the whole, 53 compounds representing more than 98% of the oils have been fully characterized. The four cultivated samples showed a very similar chemical profile, thymol and γ-terpinene being the main compounds followed by p-cymene, α-terpinene, carvacrol and thymol methyl ethers, myrcene and carvacrol. The commercial sample, instead, showed a different profile, with carvacrol largely being the main component (>77%), followed by p-cymene, γ-terpinene and thymol, in that order.According to the chemical composition, the sensory profile of the Sicilian oregano samples proved fairly homogenous, whereas different results were obtained for the commercial sample. Indeed, the intensity of sensory attributes “typical oregano flavour” and off-flavour are similar for the four cultivated samples; instead the commercial sample has less freshness and a lower typical oregano flavour, associated with a higher level of off-flavour.  相似文献

A field investigation was carried out on red sandy soil in the semi-arid tropical climate of south India to investigate the response of industrially important, multi-harvest, aromatic crop palmarosa {Cymbopogon martinii (Roxb.) Wats. var. motia Burk., family: Poaceae} to foliar application (2.5 g/L single application for each harvest at 700 L nutrient solution per hectare) of magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), boron (B) and their residual effect on the succeeding harvest. During the experimental period, palmarosa crop afforded four harvests, 49.5-70.6 t/ha total biomass yield (fresh weight), 211.4-384.2 kg/ha total essential oil yield and Rs. 232,540-422,620/ha (US$ 4844.6-8804.6/ha) gross returns. Fifth harvest (no nutrients were applied) performed to examine the residual effect of Mg and micronutrients applied to the previous four harvests revealed the absence of residual effect pointing to the need for application of nutrients to individual harvests. Foliar application of Mg and micronutrients significantly increased the yield attributes (plant height, tiller number/plant, leaf number/plant), biomass yield, essential oil yield and gross returns of palmarosa. Mg and micronutrients enhanced the total biomass yields by 37.0-42.6% and the total essential oil yields by 44.6-81.7% in comparison to the control (water spray). All the treatments produced good quality essential oils with 1.5-3.2% linalool, 79.7-85.8% geraniol and 4.5-10.3% geranyl acetate. Mg and B additions declined linalool (%) in the second and fourth harvests and increased geraniol (%) in the first harvest. Mg and micronutrients application improved geraniol (%) in the second harvest. Except Zn, all the other nutrients decreased geranyl acetate (%) in the second harvest, but in the third and fourth harvests Mn and B increased geranyl acetate (%).  相似文献

Summary The effects of 10 volatile oils and their main compounds on potato sprout growth were investigated in vitro. Sprout growth was inhibited especially by the volatile oils fromOriganum onites, Rosa damascena, Carum carvi, Mentha piperita, Echinophora tuneifolia andCoriandrum sativum. The major compound of volatile oils was carvacrol (78.2%) inO. onites, citronellol (46.7%) inR. damascena, S-(+)-carvone (54.9%) inC. carvi, menthol (44.1%) inM. piperita, α phelladrene (45.9%) inE. tuneifolia and linalool (76.5%) inC. sativum. The results showed that some volatile oils rich in monoterpenic compounds such as carvacrol, citronellol, geraniol, nerol and S-(+)-carvone were able to prevent the growth of sprouts and extend the storage-life of the potato tubers.  相似文献

The chemical composition of essential oils isolated from aerial parts of native populations of Origanum vulgare L. from northwestern Himalaya was investigated by enantioselective gas chromatography (enantio-GC), capillary-gas chromatography (capillary-GC) and GC–MS. Seventy compounds, which accounted for 84.9–97% of the oil composition, have been identified. The oils were allotted to two main groups; the first group had a high percentage of components belonging to the thymol/carvacrol biosynthetic pathway and the second was characterized by a different sesquiterpene composition and a high linalool and bornyl acetate percentage. Essential oils of O. vulgare populations from Rilkot and Dhanachuli areas in northwestern Himalaya were characterized by high monoterpenoids proportions as compared to Nainital and Bhowali populations, which were dominated by sesquiterpenoids. High proportions of thymol (29.2–82%) were found only in two populations. Composition of the samples collected from Dhanachuli area differed from Nainital and Bhowali collections by a unique presence of carvacrol. Notably, there were significant differences in the concentration of rest of the terpenes in all the collections. On enantio-GC, enantiomeric excess for (3R) (−)- and (3S) (+)-linalool, (S) (+)- and (R) (−)-terpinen-4-ol, (S) (−)- and (R) (+)-α-terpineol, (1S) (−)-bornyl acetate and (1S) (−)-borneol were established in populations from Bhowali and Dhanachuli area. Moreover, linalool type oregano may be useful in promoting wider commercial utilization of the biodiversity of this species.  相似文献

The essential oil of Rosa damascena Mill. is one of the most valuable and important base material in the flavor and fragrance industry. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of harvest date, fermentation duration and Tween 20 treatment on the essential oil content and composition of the rose petals. The essential oil content and composition were significantly different in the petals harvested at various dates (May 24, June 1, 8, and 15, 2002). The highest oil content was found on May 24 harvest (0.040%), and then a gradual decrease was observed up to last harvest date (0.032%). The highest percentages of geraniol, nerol, and phenylethyl alcohol were obtained from the petals harvested on May 24. However, the highest percentages of citronellol and linalool were found from the petals harvested on June 8. The petals collected freshly were fermented for various duration (0, 12, 24, and 36 h) at 25 °C in sacks. The highest essential oil content was found in the non-fermented petals. As fermentation duration increased, essential oil content gradually decreased. The most significant changes during the fermentation were observed in citronellol and geraniol contents. Citronellol/geraniol (C/G) ratio increased from 0.57 to 10.31 throughout the fermentation. In the other experiment, Tween 20 was added into the distillation water at various concentrations (0, 1000, 2500, and 5000 ppm). Although Tween 20 generally raised the contents of essential oil, it did not significantly influence the oil composition. The highest oil content (0.045%) was obtained from the distillation treated with 2500 ppm of Tween 20. Oil content had high positive correlations with geraniol and linalool contents (r=0.55 and 0.53, respectively), but high negative correlation with citronellol content (r=−0.48).  相似文献

To overview phytotherapy of vaginitis in order to identify new approaches for new pharmacological treatments. All related literature databases were searched for herbal medicinal treatment in vaginitis. The search terms were plant, herb, herbal therapy, phytotherapy, vaginitis, vaginal, anti-candida, anti-bacterial and anti-trichomonas. All of the human, animal and in vitro studies were included. Anti-candida, anti-bacterial and anti-trichomonas effects were the key outcomes. The plants including carvacrol, 1,8-cineole, geranial, germacrene-D, limonene, linalool, menthol, terpinen-4-ol and thymol exhibited anti-candida effects. A very low concentration of geranium oil and geraniol blocked mycelial growth, but not yeast. Tea tree oil including terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpinene, gamma-terpinene and alpha-terpineol showed anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-protozoal properties against trichomonas. Allium hirtifolium (persian shallot) comparable to metronidazole exhibited anti-trichomonas activity due to its components such as allicin, ajoene and other organosulfides. The plants having beneficial effects on vaginitis encompass essential oils that clear the pathway that future studies should be focused to standardize theses herbs.  相似文献

Brown rot (Monilinia spp.) affects the shelf life, fruit quality and marketability of peaches (Prunus persica L.). Increasing consumer concern regarding food safety makes it necessary to search for natural environmentally friendly alternative products for postharvest disease control. In this investigation, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) punnets containing thyme oil (TO sachets) and sealed with chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films significantly reduced the incidence and severity of brown rot caused by Monilinia laxa in artificially inoculated peach fruits (cv. Kakawa) held at 25 °C for 5 days. Furthermore, PET punnets containing TO sachets and sealed with chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films significantly reduced the brown rot incidence to 10% in naturally infected fruits stored at 0.5 °C, 90% RH for 7 days and at the simulated market shelf conditions for 3 days at 15 °C, 75% RH. The chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films maintained the active components of thyme oil, thymol (56.43% RA), caryophyllen (9.47% RA) and β-linalool (37.6% RA) within the (head space volatiles) punnet. Panellists preferred fruits packed from commercial punnet containing thyme oil (sachets) and sealed with chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films due to overall appearance, taste, and natural peach flavour.  相似文献

Natural essential oils extracted from aromatic crops through steam distillation are extensively used in fragrance, flavour and pharmaceutical industries and in aromatherapy. During steam distillation, a part of the essential oil becomes dissolved in condensate or distillation water and is lost as this water is discarded. A method was developed to recover the dissolved essential oil from condensate water. Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii (Roxb.) Wats. var. motia Burk., family: Poaceae), an important aromatic grass was used as the test crop. The distillation water of palmarosa mixed with hexane in 10:1 proportion was thoroughly shaken for 30 min to trap the dissolved essential oil. Hexane was then distilled to yield ‘secondary’ or ‘recovered’ oil. In palmarosa, the ‘primary’ or ‘decanted’ oil (obtained directly by distilling the crop biomass) accounted for 92% and the recovered oil accounted for 8% of the total oil yield. The solvent loss in this process was 4–7%. Experiments conducted in the laboratory with the essential oil showed that the water solubility of palmarosa oil ranged from 0.12 to 0.15% at 31 °C and 0.15 to 0.20% at 80 °C. Hexane recovered up to 97% of the dissolved essential oil in water. The recovered essential oil was richer in organoleptically important oxygenated compounds linalool (2.6–3.8%), geraniol (91.8–92.8%) and geranial (1.8–2.0%) compared to the primary oil.  相似文献

Willow based herbal products containing salicin and its derivatives can be used to alleviate aches and fevers. To guarantee the high quality of the willow drugs and moderate low cultivation and transportation costs, the willows with high salicylate concentrations are recommended for herbal production. Dark-leaved willow (Salix myrsinifolia Salisb.) with its high salicylate content is a promising source of herbal drugs. In the present study, seven dark-leaved willow clones were cultivated under short-rotation system with a two-year cultivation cycle. The yields of salicylates and biomass, and the concentrations of foliar phenolics were determined after the second cultivation cycle. Willow clones were treated by different cultivation methods, i.e. combinations of mulching (black polythene vs. cutter chip) and fertilisation (0, 25, 150 kg ha?1, N), with the objective of evaluating the most productive clone and cultivation method for herbal willow production. Furthermore, we compared our results to those obtained after the first cultivation cycle. Results showed that the yields of salicylates and biomass, and the concentrations of all foliar phenolic metabolites varied significantly amongst the clones. Biomass yields and salicylate yield were increased by polythene mulching, but the level of response varied between clones. Fertilisation (only the highest rate) caused an increase in yields, but the effect of fertilisation was smaller than that of mulching. Salicylate yield of most clones was higher than that had been during the previous rotation. Phenolic analyses showed that the concentrations of chlorogenic acid, total p-OH-cinnamic acids and soluble condensed tannins were higher in the willows grown in polythene mulch plots than in willows grown on cutter chip mulched plots. Furthermore, the concentrations of diglucoside of SaOH, salicin, disalicortin 1, disalicortin 2, chlorogenic acid, total chlorogenic acids and total flavonoids were higher in fertilized than in unfertilized willows. Salicortin, which was the most abundant salicylate, and total salicylates were not affected by fertilisation and mulching. The effects of fertilisation and mulching on several phenolics were clone-dependent. In conclusion, after two cultivation cycles, the cultivation methods were not effective in increasing the foliar total salicylate concentration, but rather increased the salicylate yield by enhancing the biomass of the synthesising tissues. Since biomass production was increased by the second cultivation cycle, the cultivation of herbal willows under a two-year cycle is recommended. The highly variable responses of the clones to treatments indicate that profitable willow cultivation for herbal industry is based on the right clone selection.  相似文献

Essential oils from 22 aromatic plant species were tested for mortality of the mosquito larvae Culex quinquefasciatus. Lethal concentrations were determined for individual essential oils. Essential oils obtained from Thymus vulgaris, Satureja hortensis and Thymus satureioides plants showed the highest effect, with LC50 found lower than 50 μg/ml (33, 36 and 44 μg/ml, respectively). Analyses showed that majority substances for T. vulgaris were thymol and p-cymene (60.3 and 10.1%, respectively); carvacrol and γ-terpinene for S. hortensis (48.1 and 36.7%, respectively), and borneol and thymol for T. satureioides (30.3 and 32.5%, respectively). The selected essential oils also showed very good effectiveness with respect to mortality and percentage of adult emergence upon short-term exposure in water contaminated with lethal doses of individual oils. While there was 77% adult emergence from the larvae in the control, in T. vulgaris, T. satureoides and S. hortensis there was only 12.3, 15.3 and 16.0% adult emergence, respectively. High antioviposition effectiveness was found in all selected oils. Almost 100% deterrence of female oviposition was determined for all oils in concentrations of 0.02%. Significant differences were seen with tested concentrations of 0.01 and 0.005%, where the oil of T. vulgaris proved most effective (repellency about 99.8 and 62.3%, respectively).  相似文献

The combination of thymol, a monoterpene phenol compound originating from thyme, and acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM; Actigard 50 WG), a systemic acquired resistance (SAR) inducer, was applied to tomato plants in field conditions to evaluate the effectiveness of both chemicals to control bacterial wilt. Thymol was applied as a soil fumigant at 9.43 kg per ha 24 h after soil infestation and seven days before transplanting. ASM was applied as a foliar spray at 3.59-8.98 ml per ha, once in the greenhouse and five times in the field. The field was inoculated by applying 50 ml of pathogen suspension (107 cfu/ml) into each transplanting hole eight days prior to transplanting. The experiment was performed in 2006 and repeated in 2008 at the North Florida Research and Education Center in Quincy, FL. In 2006, the combination of ASM and thymol significantly reduced disease in the bacterial wilt tolerant genotype 7514 compared to thymol alone. In 2008, the combination of ASM and thymol significantly reduced disease and increased yield compared to the control, whereas ASM or thymol alone did not significantly reduce disease or increase yield compared to the control. This is the first report of the use of both thymol and ASM to control bacterial wilt on moderately resistant tomato cultivars. Based on this study, control of the pathogen can be achieved by using both chemicals and moderately resistant cultivars.  相似文献

The low incidence of cardiovascular disease in Mediterranean countries leads to an increased interest of the scientific community for the Mediterranean diet. Our aim was to evaluate total phenol and flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity, free radical scavenging activity and potential antihypertensive effect of aqueous extract obtained from Thymus serpyllum L. (wild thyme, TE), an aromatic herb from the Lamiaceae family (highly present in Mediterranean diet), in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and in normotensive Wistar rats. Total phenol content of TE was 2008.33?±?10.6 mg/L GAE, and rosmarinic and caffeic acids were predominant phenolic compounds. The ferric reducing/antioxidant power and antioxidant capacity analysis revealed strong antioxidative properties of TE. In vitro nitric oxide-scavenging activity of 1 mg/l TE was 63.43 % with the IC50 value of 122.36 μg/ml. Bolus injection of TE (100 mg/kg body weight i.v.) induced significant decrease of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and total peripheral resistance in SHR, without effects on these parameters in normotensive Wistar rats. Cardiac index remained unchanged after TE treatment in all experimental rats. Given dose of TE did not show significant nitric oxide-scavenging activity in vivo. Our results indicate that TE may protect against hypertension in experimental model of essential hypertension.  相似文献

This study investigated the efficacy of Glomus mosseae and thyme and peppermint oils in controlling bacterial wilt disease (BW) of tomato caused by Ralstonia solanacearum under in vitro conditions and under greenhouse and field conditions. In an in vitro study, we tested nine plant oils against R. solanacearum, and the results demonstrate that only caraway, thyme, peppermint and marjoram oils inhibited the growth of the BW pathogen with differing degrees, thyme oil caused the highest reduction of the growth of the pathogen followed by peppermint and the lowest was caraway and marjoram. We evaluated the effect of thyme and peppermint under greenhouse and field conditions. Under greenhouse conditions, the thyme treatment exhibited the highest disease reduction percentage followed by the thyme + peppermint treatment, while G. mosseae caused the least disease reduction percentage. Under field experiments, thyme oil treatment exhibited the highest ability to reduce the disease by 94.8 and 97.1% in the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons, respectively, followed by the treatment of thyme oil + peppermint oil with the reduction of 89.5 and 82.4%, respectively. G. mosseae exhibited the lowest percentage of disease reduction; however, it caused a greater yield increase percentage during both of the tested seasons.  相似文献

In Rwanda, the production of geranium (Pelargonium sp.) essential oil is becoming an important commercial crop for income generation. The understanding of postharvest handling of the crop prior to distillation is a key strategy to maximize oil yields. Two experiments were conducted in commercial fields of rose geranium, Pelargonium graveolens, in Kiyombe (Rwanda) to investigate the effects of (i) the length of dry-down or partial wilt and (ii) the time of day on the quantity and quality of essential oil yield and composition. In the first study, the plant material was harvested at 12:00 noon, and while drying also under the same shade conditions the material was sub-sampled immediately and again at 3 h intervals up through 46-h after harvesting. In the second study, the geranium plants were manually harvested at 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM and dried under shade for 17 h prior to steam distillation. The geranium plants harvested in the early afternoon (2:00 PM) had the highest essential oil concentration (0.22%). The chemical profile of the essential oil showed that Kiyombe geranium oil exhibited a suitable chemical composition (citronellol 26.4%, linalool 2.3% and geraniol 13.9%), acceptable for international markets.  相似文献

Avocado fruit has high economic value; however, major post-harvest losses are encountered throughout the supply chain mostly due to anthracnose disease caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Increasing consumer concern regarding food safety and demand for organically produced fruits makes it necessary to search for natural environmentally friendly alternative products and processes for the fruit industry; particularly in disease control. Antifungal effects of Gum Arabic (GA) (10%), Aloe vera (AL) (2%), chitosan (CH) (1%) alone or in combination with thyme oil (1%) were investigated in vitro. CH + thyme oil and AL + thyme oil [1:1 or 3:1 v/v] showed fungicidal effects while AL, CH, GA and GA + thyme oil [3:1 v/v] showed fungistatic effects on mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides in vitro. CH and AL coatings alone or in combination with thyme oil [3:1 v/v], either as preventative or curative treatments in comparison with commercial treatment (prochloraz, 0.05%) and untreated control were evaluated on incidence and severity (lesion diameter) of anthracnose in vivo. Preventative CH + thyme oil treatments significantly reduced the severity of anthracnose (8.9 mm) compared to thyme oil (12.7 mm), AL + TO (14.4 mm), CH (17.8 mm), AL (20.6 mm), PZ (18.3 mm) and untreated samples (34.8 mm). As curative method, the CH + thyme oil combination also reduced the severity of anthracnose by at least 4 mm compared to the other treatments. The total phenols, polyphenol oxidase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, firmness and flesh colour were also determined. Results showed an increase in peroxidase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, β-1,3-glucanase, chitinase, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities and total phenolics with reduced loss of firmness and flesh colour following CH + thyme oil treatments. This investigation recommends CH + thyme oil [3:1 v/v] combination treatment as a suitable alternative to the currently adopted prochloraz applications in controlling anthracnose disease in avocado fruit during storage.  相似文献

Nannochloropsis salina was grown on a mixture of standard growth media and pre-gasified industrial process water representing effluent from a local biogas plant. The study aimed to investigate the effects of enriched growth media and cultivation time on nutritional composition of Nannochloropsis salina biomass, with a focus on eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Variations in fatty acid composition, lipids, protein, amino acids, tocopherols and pigments were studied and results compared to algae cultivated on F/2 media as reference. Mixed growth media and process water enhanced the nutritional quality of Nannochloropsis salina in laboratory scale when compared to algae cultivated in standard F/2 medium. Data from laboratory scale translated to the large scale using a 4000 L flat panel photo-bioreactor system. The algae growth rate in winter conditions in Denmark was slow, but results revealed that large-scale cultivation of Nannochloropsis salina at these conditions could improve the nutritional properties such as EPA, tocopherol, protein and carotenoids compared to laboratory-scale cultivated microalgae. EPA reached 44.2% ± 2.30% of total fatty acids, and α-tocopherol reached 431 ± 28 µg/g of biomass dry weight after 21 days of cultivation. Variations in chemical compositions of Nannochloropsis salina were studied during the course of cultivation. Nannochloropsis salina can be presented as a good candidate for winter time cultivation in Denmark. The resulting biomass is a rich source of EPA and also a good source of protein (amino acids), tocopherols and carotenoids for potential use in aquaculture feed industry.

Due to their bioavailability, glycosylated carotenoids may have interesting biological effects. Sioxanthin, as a representative of this type of carotenoid, has been identified in marine actinomycetes of the genus Salinispora. This study evaluates, for the first time, the effect of cultivation temperature (T) and light intensity (LI) on the total cellular carotenoid content (TC), antioxidant activity (AA) and sioxanthin content (SX) of a crude extract (CE) from Salinispora tropica biomass in its vegetative state. Treatment-related differences in TC and SX values were statistically significantly and positively affected by T and LI, while AA was most significantly affected by T. In the S. tropica CE, TC correlated well (R2 = 0.823) with SX and somewhat less with AA (R2 = 0.777). A correlation between AA and SX was found to be less significant (R2 = 0.731). The most significant protective effect against oxidative stress was identified in the CE extracted from S. tropica biomass grown at the highest T and LI (CE-C), as was demonstrated using LNCaP and KYSE-30 human cell lines. The CE showed no cytotoxicity against LNCaP and KYSE-30 cell lines.  相似文献
