Abstract

Two Oxisols [Dusky Latosol (LR) and Dark‐Red Latosol (LE)] and one Entisol [Quartzous Sand (AQ)] of a watershed situated at the boundaries of the most important Brazilian aquifer, and intensively cropped to sugarcane, were studied in relation to their nitrate retention and leaching potential, and related electrochemical properties. Nitrate leaching tests carried out with repacked soil columns showed that deep layers of the subsoils, in which electrochemical conditions favor nitrate retention (e.g., net charge near zero, and ZPC larger than pH in water) required a larger number of pore volumes (npv) of leaching solutions for nitrate peak elution and nitrate depletion than surface layers, in which nitrate retention is not favored. Well defined regions of nitrate accumulation were detected in the 220–460 cm layer in the LE and 40–600 cm layer in the AQ. In these regions nitrate concentrations varied from 0.06 to 0.22 and 0.08 to 0.20 cmolc kg‐1, against 0.03 to 0.05 cmolc kg‐1 in the upper and underlayers. Nitrate distribution curves in the LE profile in the years 1995 and 1997 presented similar shapes and positions, indicating that the accumulation region remained almost unaltered, and stationary, in this period. Nitrate accumulation was related to soil electrochemical conditions favorable to nitrate retention.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify individual and contextual factors associated with the practice of exclusive breast-feeding (EBF). METHODOLOGY: We analysed 34 435 children under 6 months of age living in 111 municipalities in the state of S?o Paulo, south-eastern Brazil, who participated in a survey investigating feeding practices during the first year of life, carried out during the 1999 national vaccination campaign. The questionnaire employed included questions on the consumption, in the last 24 h, of breast milk, water, tea, other types of milk and other foods, in addition to mother and child characteristics. Information on the pro-breast-feeding measures implemented in the municipalities was also collected. The effects of individual and contextual characteristics on EBF were analysed using multilevel models. RESULTS: The final model showed a greater chance of EBF in women with tertiary education (odds ratio (OR) = 1.91; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.75-2.06); women aged between 25 and 29 years (OR = 1.52; 95% CI 1.41-1.63); multiparae (OR = 1.42; 95% CI 1.33-1.49); female babies (OR = 1.12; 95% CI 1.05-1.18); birth weight > or = 3000 g (OR = 1.73; 95% CI 1.49-1.97); child follow-up in the private health-care network (OR = 1.10; 95% CI 1.02-1.18); and municipalities with four or five pro-breast-feeding measures (OR = 2.4; 95% CI 2.19-2.88). An analysis of the interactions between individual and contextual variables showed that the presence of at least four pro-breast-feeding measures in the municipality attenuated the risk of early termination of EBF associated with low maternal schooling and low birth weight, and transformed child follow-up in the public network into a protective factor against the early termination of breast-feeding. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of measures aimed at protecting, promoting and supporting breast-feeding in the municipality had a positive influence on EBF and attenuated the impact of risk factors for the termination of breast-feeding.  相似文献

Abstract

Organic residues may cause major health and environmental problems. This is the case in our study area, where more than 10 billion L per year of residential and industrial waste are produced. Land application of biosolids can be an economical solution by recycling waste and can provide valuable fertilizer if used correctly. The aim of this work was to study the effect of biosolids on the chemical properties of an Oxisol. The experiment was located at Ilha Solteira northwest of São Paulo State, Brazil. The soil was cropped to Sorghum bicolor. The field experimental design consisted of random blocks with six treatments and four replications of each treatment. Biosolids were surface applied to four treatments at rates of 5, 10, 20, and 40 Mg ha?1 on a dry matter basis; in addition, a treatment with mineral fertilizer and a control were included. One year after biosolids application, soil samples were taken at 0–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm. Organic matter content (Walkley–Black) and pH (CaCl2) were routinely determined. Cation exchange capacity, exchangeable bases (Ca, Mg, K), and P were determined by exchange resin extraction. No significant differences in any of the analyzed properties were found below the 20‐cm depth. Extractable phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) increased with increasing biosolids rate in the top 20 cm, whereas calcium (Ca) and (Ma) magnesium content were not significantly influenced by biosolids. Soil pH decreased with increasing biosolids application. The sewage sludge application did not influence the sorghum production in the first year of culture, under unfavorable soil moisture conditions, but it influenced the dry matter.  相似文献

The area of the Jacupiranga Alkaline Complex and its surroundings is characterized by a variety of slope forms. Their spatial differentiation and the differences in relative relief and hilltop heights are a function of lithology. Significant contrasts exist, particularly between the ultramafic rocks of the Alkaline Complex and the quartz-rich rocks of the surrounding Precambrian basement. Although climatic conditions are uniform, the physical and chemical properties of the weathering products formed on the various rock types are very different. Through their properties, they affect the hillslope processes and thereby influence the hillslope development. Slope-forming processes on deeply weathered ultramafic rocks are slow mass movements and chemical denudation. On the more resistant ultramafic rocks, wash processes appear to be more important. Wash and rapid mass movements predominate on gneisses, granites and mica schists. The geomorphological development of the Jacupiranga Alkaline Complex can be explained in terms of a long, continuous downwearing. The large differences in elevation within the Alkaline Complex suggest that the development towards a more differentiated relief may extend well back into the Tertiary. The mutual adjustment of slope forms, processes and lithological controls favoured the development of rock-dependent summit heights, where heights are determined by the steepness of the slopes and the spacing of the drainage lines. Climatic fluctuations in the Pleistocene failed to produce any fundamental change in the long-term development of the hillslopes as their duration was too short with respect to the relaxation time of the hillslopes or their influence was not great enough to alter the overall trend of slope development.  相似文献

Bioindicators plants are important for the evaluation of air quality and Tillandsia usneoides L., an atmospheric epiphyte bromeliad, has been used for this purpose. The present study aims at evaluate the structural pattern of the leaf of this species when exposed to urban air pollutants, and determining whether the leaves present structural parameters that could be used as indicators of such pollutants. Samples of T. usneoides were exposed in São Paulo, the biggest city of Brazil, for 8, 16 and 24 weeks, and compared with others kept in a rural area. The urban pollution of São Paulo affected the structure of the leaves of T. usneoides causing alterations, especially in the scales, density of stomata and epidermis thickness. Qualitative alterations in the mesophyll were not observed in plants exposed at the polluted sites. These structural characteristics of T. usneoides seem to account for its high tolerance to heavy metal accumulation. The percentage of anomalous scales may potentially be used as an alternative bioindicator parameter.  相似文献

Purpose

Among environmental factors governing innumerous processes that are active in estuarine environments, those of edaphic character have received special attention in recent studies. With the objectives of determining the spatial patterns of soil attributes and components across different mangrove forest landscapes and obtaining additional information on the cause–effect relationships between these variables and position within the estuary, we analyzed several soil attributes in 31 mangrove soil profiles from the state of São Paulo (Guarujá, Brazil).

Materials and methods

Soil samples were collected at low tide along two transects within the Crumahú mangrove forest. Samples were analyzed to determine pH, Eh, salinity, and the percentages of sand, silt, clay, total organic carbon (TOC), and total S. Mineralogy of the clay fraction (<2 mm) was also studied by X-ray diffraction analysis, and partitioning of solid-phase Fe was performed by sequential extraction.

Results and discussion

The results obtained indicate important differences in soil composition at different depths and landscape positions, causing variations in physicochemical parameters, clay mineralogy, TOC contents, and iron geochemistry. The results also indicate that physicochemical conditions may vary in terms of different local microtopographies. Soil salinity was determined by relative position in relation to flood tide and transition areas with highlands. The proportions of TOC and total S are conditioned by the sedimentation of organic matter derived from vegetation and by the prevailing redox conditions, which clearly favored intense sulfate reduction in the soils (~80% of the total Fe is Fe-pyrite). Particle-size distribution is conditioned by erosive/deposition processes (present and past) and probably by the positioning of ancient and reworked sandy ridges. The existing physicochemical conditions appear to contribute to the synthesis (smectite) and transformation (kaolinite) of clay minerals.

Conclusions

The results demonstrate that the position of soils in the estuary greatly affects soil attributes. Differences occur even at small scales (meters), indicating that both edaphic (soil classification, soil mineralogy, and soil genesis) and environmental (contamination and carbon stock) studies should take such variability into account.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the interactions of sedimentary humic substances (SHS) from a sugarcane cultivation area with Cu(II) and Cr(III) and to evaluate the occurrence of these metals in the pore water and SHS.

Materials and methods

For this study, the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, which is considered the region with the highest production of sugar cane in the state, was selected. Samples of sediment were collected from four sampling sites in the Preto, Turvo, and Grande rivers. The SHS and pore water were extracted from the sediment using the method suggested by the International Humic Substances Society and centrifugation, respectively. The complexing capacity (CC) of the SHS for Cu(II) and Cr(III) was determined by individually titrating these metals with an ultrafiltration system using tangential flow. The total concentrations of Cr and Cu were determined for the pore water, sediments, and humic substances with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and Zeeman background correction after an acid digestion, according to the methods described in US EPA Method 3050B.

Results and discussion

The SHS from a site in the Turvo River, which is typically cultivated with sugarcane, possessed the highest concentration of Cu bound to SHS (25.0%), the largest CC (0.63 mmol Cu g?1 HS) and the highest concentration of this metal in the pore water (1.38 mg Cu Kg?1 sed.). For Cr, the SHS collected from a location on the Preto River dam had the largest CC (0.90 mmol Cr g?1 HS) and the lowest Cr content in the pore water (0.29 mg Cr Kg?1 sed.), indicating that there was an inverse relationship between the CC and the concentration of metal available in the pore water.

Conclusions

Sedimentary humic substances might be one of the regulatory factors controlling the availability of Cu and Cr in the sediments found in a typical region that has been planted with sugarcane. Distinct behaviors were observed between the two elements investigated; higher CC and a larger fraction of Cu(II) were found in the pore water of samples originating from sugarcane crops. The opposite behavior was observed for the Cr(III) species.  相似文献

Purpose

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are unintentional products that are classified as persistent toxic substances. The goal of the present study was to generate data on the presence of 15 priority PAHs that are found in surface sediment and core sediment in the region of the Turvo/Grande watershed, São Paulo State, Brazil, which is an area of expanding sugarcane cultivation, and to correlate these data with the sources of these PAHs and the guiding values for sediment quality analysis.

Materials and methods

Surface sediments and sediment cores were sampled during the rainy and dry seasons in February and July 2010. The extraction of PAHs from sediments was performed using a Soxhlet extractor, and then the extract was cleaned according to the methods of the US EPA 3630C (US EPA 1996) using a silica gel column. Quantification was performed using high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.

Results and discussion

The concentrations of all 15 PAHs decreased as the depth of the sediment core increased. Overall, the concentrations decreased along the sediment core; however, the RTURARG (region predominantly used for planting sugarcane and livestock) during the rainy season and the CAPRP sampling site (located at part of the Preto River dam) during the dry season showed increased concentrations in the first few sediment fractions, and then the concentrations decreased. Higher concentrations were observed in urban locations, and the concentration of naphthalene was higher than the probable effect level (PEL) determined by the Canadian environmental agency. The obtained diagnostic ratios indicate that the sediment from areas with an abundance of sugarcane was a pyrolytic source of PAHs, which indicates a contribution from burning straw to the PAH concentrations in those areas.

Conclusions

For all sampling sites and all PAHs, we found a decreasing trend in PAH concentrations with increasing sediment core depth, and the locations, such as CAPRP, that experienced a higher level of human activity had the highest total concentrations of PAHs. These locations were the only areas in which the PAH naphthalene was found in higher concentrations than the PEL. The diagnostic ratios reveal that regions with sugarcane plantations had predominantly pyrolytic sources of PAHs, indicating the contribution of PAHs from sugarcane straw burning.

The chemical dynamics at Meio Stream Basin, São Paulo State, Brazil were evaluated using major elements as natural tracers. The surface water samples from Meio Stream were collected near the mouth of Meio Stream at the confluence with the Mogi-Guaçu River on February 25, 2005, April 20, 2005, and July 8, 2005. Rainwater samples were collected (using a “bulk” collector) for 1 year at one sampling point located about 4 km from downtown Leme city and other possible sources of contamination. The analyses were performed by pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, total solids, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, alkalinity, chloride, sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. This basin has serious environmental problems in terms of rainwater and surface water quality, which result in the negative annual flux of cations and anions at Meio Stream Basin, with the exception of chlorine. The Meio Stream, downstream from Leme city, receives several elements/compounds through anthropogenic activities, mainly related to the discharge of domestic effluents. Anthropogenic inputs (mining, fossil fuel burning, and agricultural activities) are responsible for the higher concentrations of cations and anions in the rainwater from this basin.  相似文献

Two campaigns were conducted in 2003 and 2004 at sites of different characteristics in São Paulo State. Atmospheric samples were collected twice a month during a 1-year campaign (an extensive campaign) from April 2003 to May 2004 at São Paulo City (SPA) site. The results showed that the pollutant concentrations were controlled not only by local source emissions but also through pollutant transport, both of which were dictated by the prevailing meteorological conditions. Chrysene, benzo(e)pyrene, and benzo(b)fluoranthene were the major compounds found, and diagnostic ratios indicated the multiplicity of sources: industrial, vehicular emission, and atmospheric transport. Intensive campaign (from July 15 to 30, 2003) samples showed higher cancer risk than those collected in the extensive campaign. Samples collected at the urban site (SPA) presented comparable values of PM10 to the urban site influenced by sugarcane burning (Araraquara, ARQ). On the other hand, PAH average concentrations were higher at SPA than at other sites. In both campaigns, the highest value for dry atmospheric deposition flux was found in autumn and winter. Individually, BPe presented the highest deposition flux followed by BbF in the intensive campaign. It seems that during those periods, the dry deposition was the main airborne PAH removal mechanism. Diagnostic ratios suggested also vehicular emissions at the sites and photochemical reactions influencing in the atmospheric particulate matter composition. SPA and PRB samples presented higher cancer risk than ARQ in the intensive campaign.  相似文献

Rainfall is the main cause of erosion of Brazilian soils, which makes assessing the rainfall erosivity factor (RE) and the erosivity density (ED) fundamental for soil and water conservation. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: i) to estimate the RE and ED for São Paulo State, Brazil, using synthetic series of pluviographic data; ii) to define homogeneous regions regarding rainfall erosivity; and iii) to generate regression models for rainfall erosivity estimates in each of the homogeneous regions. Synthetic series of pluviographic data were initially obtained on a sub-daily scale from the daily rainfall records of 696 rainfall gauges. The RE values were then estimated from the synthetic rainfall data, and ED was calculated from the relationship between erosivity and rainfall amounts. Monthly and annual maps for RE and ED were obtained. Hierarchical clustering analysis was used to define homogeneous regions in terms of rainfall erosivity, and regionalized regression models for estimating RE were generated. The results demonstrate high spatial variability of RE in São Paulo, where the highest annual values were observed in the coastal region. December to March concentrate approximately 60% of the intra-annual erosivity. The highest values of annual ED were observed in regions with intense agricultural activity. The definition of five homogeneous regions concerning the rainfall erosive potential evidenced distinct seasonal patterns of the spatial distribution of erosivity. Finally, the high predictive accuracy of the regionalized models obtained characterizes them as essential tools for reliable estimates of rainfall erosivity, and contribute to better soil conservation planning.  相似文献

Since usual processes involve water as absorbent, they appear not always really efficient for the treatment of hydrophobic volatile organic compound (VOC). Recently, absorption and biodegradation coupling in a two-phase partitioning bioreactor (TPPB) proved to be a promising technology for hydrophobic compound treatment. The choice of the organic phase, the non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) is based on various parameters involved in both steps of the process, hydrophobic VOC absorption in a gas?Cliquid contactor, and biodegradation in the TPPB. VOC solubility and diffusivity in the selected NAPL, as well as NAPL viscosity, seems to be the main parameters during the absorption step, while biocompatibility, namely the absence of toxic effect of the NAPL towards microorganisms, non-biodegradability and VOC partition coefficient between NAPL and water were revealed as the key factors during the biodegradation step. The screening of the various NAPL available in the literature highlighted two families of compounds matching the required conditions for the proposed integrated process, silicone oils and ionic liquids.  相似文献

Purpose

The Turvo/Grande drainage basin (TGDB), located in the northwestern region of S?o Paulo state, covers an area of 15,983?km2. The region is typically regarded as agricultural by the S?o Paulo State Environmental Agency, but the industrial area is expanding, and some studies have shown that metal concentrations in water can be higher than the values regulated by Brazilian law. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the role of sediments as a source or a sink of metals for drainage basin management.

Materials and methods

Interstitial water from different sediment depths (0?C42?cm) and the sediment?Cwater interface and sediment core samples were collected in February and July 2010 from the Preto, Turvo, and Grande rivers. Quantification of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb in these samples was performed by graphite furnace or flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Metal diffusive flux estimation from sediment into the overlying water was calculated by Fick??s First Law of Diffusion.

Results and discussion

The fluxes of all metals for the three rivers were positive, indicating diffusion into the overlying water. Ni and Pb showed the lowest diffusive fluxes, which ranged from 2.4 to 3,978???g?m?2?day?1 for Ni and from ?0.1 to 1,597???g?m?2?day?1 for Pb. In turn, Cu and Cr were subject to the largest transfer to water, especially in the dry season (Cr, 4.5?C7,673???g?m?2?day?1; Cu, 1.3?C14,145???g?m?2?day?1). The Preto River (urban area) showed smaller fluxes than the Grande River (agricultural area), and the values of the latter were higher than those found in other impacted areas of the world.

Conclusions

The diffusive fluxes indicate that sediments from the TGDB act as a source of metals for the water column, with increased export of metals, particularly Cr and Ni, from the sediment into the overlying water during the dry season.  相似文献

On November 5, 2015, after the collapse of the Fundão tailings dam, a massive amount of iron mine waste was released into the Doce River system in southeast Brazil. The aim of our study was to determine the mass fractions of potentially toxic elements in soil affected by the deposition of material by the waste wave. A preliminary screening was performed with portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (PXRF) and principal component analysis (PCA). The EPA 3050B method was further applied to digest the samples for quantitative determination of As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. PCA was useful to classify the mine waste samples based on the Fe signal from the PXRF spectra, in spite of the heterogeneous nature of the material discharged into the Doce River system. The anomalous levels of As (up to 164 mg kg?1) and Mn (as high as 2410 mg kg?1) found in some mine waste and affected soil samples are within the background ranges typically observed in the soils of the Iron Quadrangle region. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure shows no evidence of hazards regarding As, but a high natural background level of Mn was found in the mobile fraction. This preliminary environmental assessment highlights the importance of evaluation of long-term effects on soil directly impacted, as well as on the aquatic biota of the Doce River system and adjacent coastal environment given the large affected area, which includes regions with varying background levels of toxic elements.  相似文献

Heavy metal levels were determined in marine mussels Perna perna collected from Ubatuba Bay, northern coast of the State of SãoPaulo, Brazil, during the period from January toOctober 1995. The objective of the present study wasto analyze the seasonal concentrations of some metalsof toxicological interest (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb and Zn) inUbatuba Bay using the bivalve Perna perna(Linnaeus, 1758) as a biological monitor. Collectionswere performed at three month intervals at Itaguábeach. In the laboratory, the frozen specimens werethawed at room temperature, removed from their shells, partially dried on filter paper, weighed andindividually submitted to acid digestion with sulfuricacid and hidrogen peroxide. The analyses for thedetection of Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb and Zn were carried out byflame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The resultsshowed higher metal accumulation during July. Thevalues detected for Pb and Cr were relatively high inall seasons, especially in January and July (vacationperiods) in Ubatuba Bay, with the consequent risk ofcontamination by mussel ingestion for the localpopulation and for tourists from other regions.  相似文献

The intensification of irrigated agriculture in the semi-arid region of Brazilian North-east results in a change of natural vegetation by irrigated fruit crops. New applications of remote sensing technologies are presented in this paper to estimate the impact of this land use change on regional water consumption – and ultimately the water balance – in Low-Middle São Francisco River basin. Ten Landsat images for a period from 2001 to 2007 were used, together with the locally calibrated Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) and agro-meteorological data to derive information on regional actual evapotranspiration (ET), biomass production (BIO), and crop water productivity (CWP). The Landsat-based results revealed that regional mean ET for irrigated crops was 3.6 mm d?1 being higher than for natural vegetation (1.4 mm d?1). Similar incremental ET values between natural and irrigated ecosystems were found from micro-meteorological field experiments. The consequence of this land use change on São Francisco River's downstream stream flow was assessed by estimating volumetric incremental evapotranspiration at the regional scale. The bio-physical crop water productivity per unit of actual evapotranspiration (CWPET) varied between 0.4 and 1.7 l of wine per m3 of water for wine grapes; 1.7 and 4.0 kg of fruits per m3 of water for table grapes; and 2.2 and 5.0 kg of fruits per m3 of water for mangos. The accompanying paper (Part A) describes the calibration and validation of SEBAL steps witnessed under the actual field conditions in this study area.  相似文献

Recently, the eastern region of the Maranhão state (Northeastern Brazil) became a hotspot of land-use change (LUC) directly from native vegetation to soybean cultivation, but due to the soil characteristics, LUC has caused substantial soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen depletion. Therefore, we quantified these impacts arising from two factors: (i) different timeframes after LUC and (ii) contrasting soil management practices. For the first study, soil samples (0–30 cm; six replicates) were taken on soybean fields year one, year eight and 15 years after LUC. It the second study, another area was sampled, of which part was managed under no-tillage (NT) and the other using a mouldboard plough (MP). For both studies, native vegetation (NV) was sampled as the control. NV stored about 50 Mg of carbon (C) ha−1; but LUC reduced C stocks by 35% (after 8 and 15 years); moreover, labile-C decreased between 20% and 45%, while, microbial-C decreased between 20% and 60%, considering the interval between year one and 15 years. Regarding soil management, the MP did not cause differences on C stock (24 Mg C ha−1) in comparison to NT; however, both labile-C and microbial-C decreased by 15% to NT, while, decreased by 40% to MP. These results lead us to believe that, since LUC is inevitable, we suggested the adoption of the best agricultural management practices, in order to preserve/increase the SOC, reducing the impacts on GHG emissions and, thus, achieving sustainability and profitability.  相似文献
