Juvenile African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), were fed low-tocopherol, practical test-diets containing graded levels of α-tocopheryl acetate (0, 80, 200 and 500 mg kg?1 dry feed) at proportionately 0.02 body weight per day for 70 days. After the feeding period, selected fish tissues were assayed for α-tocopherol and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentrations, before and after iron-ascorbate stimulated peroxidation. Results show that tissue accretion of α-tocopherol in muscle, liver and blood plasma increased linearly (R2= 0.83, 0.82 and 0.93, respectively) in response to elevated dietary supplementation of α-tocopheryl acetate within the range of doses under study. In muscle and liver this resulted in a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in basal TBARS and TBARS after stimulated peroxidation, indicating a greater stability against oxidation. Growth indices were not significantly affected (P > 0.05) by dietary α-tocopheryl acetate inclusion. Clarias fed the highest α-tocopheryl acetate dose (500 mg kg?1 dry feed) were observed to have significantly lower (P < 0.05) haematocrit (% packed cell volume) than fish fed the basal diet (0 mg kg?1 dry feed). It was concluded that supplemental α-tocopheryl acetate in practical diets, for Clarias gariepinus, was effective in reducing the degree of tissue-lipid peroxidation under conditions of increased oxidative stress. Thus, the post mortem resistance to oxidation achieved would improve the stability of catfish products destined for human consumption.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of microwave extracted Ghure (unripe grape) marc extract on common kilka (Clupeonella cultriventris caspia) oil oxidation during accelerated storage. The antioxidant activity of Ghure marc extract was compared with those of α-tocopherol and BHT. The Ghure marc extract significantly reduced the peroxide and p-anisidine value of kilka oil. Even though the effect of Ghure marc extract on reducing the oxidation of kilka oil was similar to the effect of BHT, it was functionally more effective than α-tocopherol. Generally, Ghure marc extract could be considered as a potential source of natural antioxidants, with inexpensive costs, for improving the oxidative stability of kilka oil.

Over a 56-day feeding period, during which juvenile African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) increased in body weight at least threefold, diets containing fresh or rancid oils (0.352 and 9.133 mmol MDA equivalents per g oil, respectively) at two levels of supplemental vitamin E (20 or 100 mg all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate kg-1 dry diet) were fed at 3% body weight per day. On termination of the feeding trial, growth performance and food utilization were assessed. Additionally, health criteria such as hepatosomatic index (HSI), haematocrit, plasma haemoglobin and plasma α-tocopherol concentration were determined. Plasma α-tocopherol was seen to increase significantly (P < 0.05) concomitant with dietary dose of the vitamin. Oxidation of dietary lipid source was observed to cause significant depletion (P < 0.05) of α-tocopherol from the plasma pool on consumption of the rancid test-diets. Final body weights of the catfish revealed that vitamin E supplementation in rancid diets significantly improved growth (P < 0.05), although supplementation into fresh-oil diets did not result in appreciable benefits in terms of final attained weight (P > 0.05). Values of other growth parameters and nutrient utilization indices were seen to respond positively to increased vitamin E levels and fresher dietary oils. With respect to other health indices, HSI was strongly correlated (P < 0.05) to dietary vitamin E dose and not oil oxidation state, with catfish fed lower α-tocopherol doses exhibiting larger livers proportional to somatic mass. Haematocrit values were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in fish fed low-tocopherol/fresh-oil diets. Although no measurably significant differences were found between treatments with respect to plasma-haemoglobin concentration, higher mean values for the fish fed rancid oils at the lower α-tocopherol inclusion level may indicate heightened Spontaneous haemolysis in this group. Mechanisms to account for dietary modulation of health indices in catfish under the present dietary regime are postulated. It was concluded that supplemental α-tocopheryl acetate in diets likely to undergo oxidation, would protect catfish from the nutritional stress imposed by rancid oils and increase growth above levels associated with unsupplemented dietary treatments.  相似文献

Seven species of cultivated and edible seaweeds found in Southern Taiwan—including Enteromorpha intestinalis, Monostorma nitidum, Ulva lactuca, Dictyopteris undulata, Sargassum hemiphyllum var. chinense, Laurencia intermedia, and Porphyra dentate—were used to determine their antioxidant activity by different extraction methods. All seaweeds were extracted using water at 90°C, sterilization at 121°C, homogenization, or enzymatic hydrolysis. Extracts were evaluated for their free radical-scavenging capacity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-pricrylhydrazyl (DPPH), their reducing power, and their superoxide anion scavenging activity. The DPPH-scavenging capacity of S. hemiphyllum var. chinense extracts produced by sterilization (98.59%), homogenization (94.72%), and carbohydrate-degrading enzyme treatment was higher than that of protease extracts, except for U. lactuca. The reducing power of S. hemiphyllum var. chinense water extracts and M. nitidum Viscozyme extracts was better than that of a commercial antioxidant. S. hemiphyllum var. chinense exhibited higher superoxide anion scavenging activity than the other species. The results demonstrate that different extracts of some of the seaweeds showed remarkable antioxidant activity in different assays. The results also provide important information for the marine food industry and suggest that seaweed might be a valuable source of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

本研究于枸杞岛西北部贻贝筏式养殖区海藻生长繁盛时期采集11种大型海藻,并对每种海藻及其藻栖钩虾、麦秆虫生物学参数进行测量分析。结果显示,不同海藻上钩虾种群特征存在显著差异,且不同海藻上麦秆虫种群特征也存在显著差异。其中,钩虾最高种群密度和最大个体均出现在厚网藻上;麦秆虫最高种群密度出现在殖丝藻上,最大个体则出现在缢基蜈蚣藻上。同时,对于生物量较小的海藻,其藻栖钩虾、麦秆虫种群密度均更高,钩虾体型无显著变化,但麦秆虫体型更小;另外,比表面积值更高的海藻,其钩虾种群密度更高,个体也更大,但麦秆虫种群密度和个体均无显著变化。研究表明,贻贝筏式养殖生境中不同种类的海藻在藻栖端足目种群特征形成的过程中扮演的功能角色存在一定差异,而海藻自身多样化的生物特征则可能是该差异形成的内在影响因素。  相似文献

Fish fillet quality may be influenced by the antioxidant level in preslaughter diet. Thus, the effects of dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate supplementation and feeding time on the flesh quality of farmed Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus L. were investigated. Halibut of mean initial weight of 312 ± 12.3 g were divided into two groups and fed commercial diets, supplemented with different levels of α‐tocopheryl acetate at the dietary inclusion levels of 189 and 613 mg kg?1 diet. Fish were sampled after 6,9,12 and 24 weeks. Over the experimental period, they reached a final mean weight of 1320 ± 108.4 g. Tissue α‐tocopherol of fillet and liver was significantly affected by the levels of α‐tocopheryl acetate given with the diets (P < 0.001). In storage on ice, fillets of fish fed the diets high in α‐tocopheryl acetate exhibited significantly lower (P < 0.001) levels of lipid oxidation. The colour of fillets in all groups deteriorated slightly, but diet did not affect this process. Halibut fed the supplemented diets for longer periods were better protected against lipid oxidation (P < 0.001) and colour deterioration (P < 0.01) than those fed for shorter periods. However, after 9 days of storage, lipid oxidation levels were still extremely low [< 0.6 µg malondialdehyde (MDA) g?1 fillet], even in fillets of fish fed the low α‐tocopheryl acetate diet for a short period preslaughter. Different slaughtering methods tested at the end of the trial showed that percussive stunning can delay the onset of rigor mortis by 8–12 h compared with bleeding of the fish. These results suggest that halibut fillets have enhanced shelf‐life stability even at low doses of dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate, and that other factors in the antioxidant defence mechanisms of the species might play a major role in the prevention of lipid oxidation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We investigated the quality characteristics of cookies prepared using different seaweeds native to the Korean coast. Flour made from four different seaweed species (Sargassum fulvellum, Enteromorpha linza, Codium fragile, and Hizikia fusiforme) was used to replace 5% of the regular flour while preparing the cookies. The seaweeds significantly affected solvent retention capacity, thus interfering with gluten network formation. Consequently, the addition of seaweed changed several variables in the cookies, such as moisture content, spread factor, and breaking stress. In sensory evaluation, cookies with Hizikia fusiforme were the most preferred, confirming the possibility of developing cookie products using this seaweed species.  相似文献

Antioxidant activity of the marine alga Kappaphycus alvarezii was investigated. Methanol, acetone, petroleum ether, aqueous methanol, ethyl acetate, and chloroform extracts (1 mg/mL) of K. alvarezii were tested for their 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. The values were compared with those of Vitamin C and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Extracts showing positive results, when tested for DPPH free radical scavenging, were examined for dose effect, in-vivo hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. All extracts showed dose-dependent DPPH scavenging and significant hydroxyl radical scavenging activities (> 82.6%). The acetone, aqueous methanol, and methanol extracts of K. alvarezii showed the highest scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate extract showed a moderate activity of 62.9%. In the DPPH method, petroleum ether and hexane extracts showed less activity with IC50 values of 118.58 ± 8.94 and 116.25 ± 7.14 μg/mL, respectively. Acetone, methanol, and ethyl acetate extracts exhibited IC50 values of 57.32 ± 1.07, 61.31 ± 0.67, and 79.50 ± 1.59 μg/mL, respectively. K. alvarezii showed higher antioxidant activity in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Proton NMR studies revealed signals in the region 0.5 to 2.0 ppm suggesting the presence of steroidal identity in the extracts.  相似文献

Antioxidant potential of three brown seaweeds, Anthophycus longifolius, Sargassum plagiophyllum, and Sargassum myriocystum, obtained from the Gulf of Mannar region of India were evaluated utilizing different in vitro systems. Ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of Anthophycus longifolius registered significantly greater hydroxyl radical scavenging ability (IC50 0.19 mg/mL) and was effective in stabilizing the 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid (IC50 1.23 mg/mL) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radicals (IC50 0.48 mg/mL) (p < 0.05). No significant differences in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging and ferrous ion chelating properties of the EtOAc extracts of the seaweeds were apparent. The utilities of the reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method hyphenated to diode-array detection for analyzing the fingerprints of phenolic constituents in the solvent extracts and fractions of the seaweeds were denoted. High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis indicated the presence of phenolic acids in the solvent extracts of seaweeds. This study demonstrated the potential use of A. longifolius as candidate species to be used as a nutritional food supplement/functional foods to increase the shelf life of food items for human consumption.  相似文献

Antioxidants have been widely used as additives to provide protection against oxidative degradation of foods by free radicals. The effect of thyme essence (Zataria multiflora Boiss) on the rancidity development in cobia (Rachycentron canadum) fillets during frozen storage was studied. Cobia fillets were treated with thyme essence (250 and 500 ppm) and then stored at??18°C for up to 6 months. Rancidity development was measured by several biochemical indices including free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), and complemented by sensory analysis (flesh odor, consistency, and appearance). Also, pH and expressible moisture were measured during 6-month storage. Proximate composition was also determined in the first day. TBA, PV, and FFA levels increased in all treatments due to lipid oxidation. Thyme essence showed an antioxidative effect in cobia fillets during frozen storage as indicated by TBA, PV, and FFA levels. Results showed that FFA, primary and secondary oxidation products, expressible moisture (EM), and pH of thyme essence treated samples were significantly lower than those of the control samples (p < 0.05). Thyme essence retarded oxidative changes in frozen cobia fillets, and the best oxidation inhibition was obtained using thyme essence at 500 ppm.  相似文献

A 3 × 3 factorial experiment was conducted on Labeo rohita fingerlings to evaluate the effect of dietary oxidized oil and vitamin E. Nine experimental diets were made, based on three degrees of oil oxidation (fresh oil, low oil oxidation and high oil oxidation), and each level of oxidation was further supplemented with three levels of vitamin E (0, 100 and 1,000 mg/kg). Weight gain% and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed fresh fish oil and low oil oxidation level were significantly higher than highly oxidized oil. Moreover, vitamin E supplemented fish also showed better growth performance. Oil oxidation caused a significant reduction in the concentrations of α‐tocopherol and increase in TBARS level and antioxidant enzyme activities in fish liver and muscles. However, increasing the dietary vitamin E abrogated these effects. Dietary vitamin E supplementation improved the fatty acid, more specifically polyunsaturated fatty acids profile of oxidized oil fed fish. In conclusion, dietary oxidized fish oil increased the oxidative stress condition of fish but supplementation of high dose of vitamin E prevented lipid oxidation, improved growth performance and fatty acid profile of L. rohita.  相似文献

Antioxidant potential, total phenolic content, and high performance liquid chromatography-based solvent extract fingerprints of phenolic constituents of brown seaweeds, Turbinaria conoides and Turbinaria ornata, were evaluated. The ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of the seaweeds registered greater phenolic content and antioxidant activities. Salicylic acid, gallic acid, quercetin, and syringic acid were predominant in the EtOAc fraction of T. conoides, while the main components in EtOAc fraction of T. ornata were quercetin and salicylic acid. This study demonstrated the candidacy of Turbinaria spp. as a potential source of antioxidant phenolics for use as food supplements and nutraceuticals to deter deleterious free radical-induced disorders and diseases.  相似文献

Five diets were formulated to investigate the effects of substituting wheat flour and soybean meal with various inclusion levels of seaweed (Gracilaria sp.) meal on the diet stability, performance and carcass composition of juvenile shrimp Penaeus monodon Fabricius. Gracilaria meal inclusion levels from 5% to 30% were tested against a control (0% seaweed) in isonitrogenous, isoenergetic diets fed for 60 days to quadruplicate groups of shrimp held in laboratory brackishwater recirculation system. Diets containing Gracilaria meal at up to 10% inclusion had no significant effects on diet water stability (after 12 h), shrimp performance or carcass composition compared with the control diet lacking seaweed. Diets containing 0-15%Gracilaria meal remained >88% water stable after 12 h, shrimp specific growth rates (SGRs) were 7.9-8.0% wet body weight day-1. survival was 48-56%, food conversion ratios were 3.1-3.5, and final carcass lipid levels were 6.8-7.5%. The 30% inclusion levels of Gracilaria meal resulted in a significant deterioration in diet water stability (86% after 12 h), shrimp growth (SGR 7.3% wet body weight day-1) and carcass lipid level (4.1%). It is suggested that with the low cost and increasing availability of Gracilaria, it may be a suitable ingredient for low-level inclusion into formulated diets for shrimp culture. The possibility of using seaweed meals for this purpose is discussed with regard to diversifying the market for cultured seaweeds and enhancing the integration of seaweed culture into coastal aquaculture systems.  相似文献

Polyphenol profiles were characterized in extracts of three Chilean brown seaweeds, Durvillaea antarctica (Chamisso) Hariot, Lessonia spicata (Suhr) Santelices, and Macrocystis integrifolia (Bory) by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS/MS). Phlorotannins with different degrees of polymerization were identified in D. antarctica (trimers to octamers) and L. spicata (trimers to tetramers). No signals related to phlorotannins compounds were detected in M. integrifolia. L. spicata and M. integrifolia showed a great variety of flavonoid compounds in comparison with D. antarctica, mainly identified as glycoside forms in all the extracts. The antioxidant activity of brown seaweed extracts measured by ferric reducing power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) was significantly higher in D. antarctica, followed by M. integrifolia and L. spicata, in line with the total phenolic (TP) content. However, D. antarctica and M. integrifolia showed similar activity for free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in spite of the differences found in TP content. D. antarctica as well as L. spicata would represent a potential source of phlorotannins, whereas M. integrifolia could be considered as an alternative source of flavonoids. The identification of polyphenols in extracts of Chilean brown seaweeds opens innovative opportunities for their use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of lipid oxidation on quality deterioration in the ordinary and dark muscles of skipjack tuna Katuwonus pelamis during the early stages of ice storage for 72 h. The lipid hydroperoxide content of the dark muscle was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than that of the ordinary muscle throughout 72 h of ice storage. The metmyoglobin content of the ordinary muscle gradually increased, and was accompanied with darkening in the fish meat color. On the other hand, the addition of sodium ascorbate or 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox®) to the ordinary muscle of skipjack tuna significantly inhibited the formation of lipid hydroperoxide as well as metmyoglobin formation. Thus, a decrease in α-tocopherol content in the ordinary muscle with antioxidant addition was not observed during ice storage period. In conclusion, the rate of lipid oxidation of skipjack tuna ordinary muscle is closely related to metmyoglobin formation, and the addition of antioxidants to fish meat is effective at inhibiting lipid oxidation as well as myoglobin oxidation in post-mortem meat.  相似文献

Fish fillet quality has been shown to be influenced by the level of antioxidants in preslaughter diet. Thus, an experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of vitamin E and C on the fillet quality of market‐size reared turbot (Scophthalmus maximus). Turbot of a mean initial weight of 347 ± 20 g were divided into four groups and fed commercial turbot diets (60% protein, 12% fat), supplemented with α‐tocopheryl acetate (mg kg?1) and ascorbyl‐2 monophosphate (mg kg?1) at the following dietary levels: 500/100, 1000/100, 100/1000, 100/100 respectively. Over a dietary supplementation period of 15 weeks, fish were fed to satiation and reached a final mean weight of 916 ± 29 g. α‐Tocopherol levels increased significantly (P < 0.001) in tissue (i.e. muscle, liver, heart and kidney) of fish fed diets containing elevated levels of α‐tocopheryl acetate. In ice storage, fillets of these fish exhibited significantly lower (P < 0.001) levels of lipid oxidation, and showed significantly less (P < 0.001) colour deterioration (higher hue angle and lower chroma). Elevated dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate levels had a negative effect (P ≤ 0.001) on the concentration of ascorbic acid in muscle tissue. An increase in dietary vitamin C did not have any detectable effect on fillet quality. Prolonged feeding times had a negative effect on lipid oxidation (P < 0.001) and colour deterioration (P < 0.01). These results suggest that increased dietary α‐tocopheryl acetate could prevent colour deterioration and lipid oxidation of turbot fillets in retail storage on ice.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of a hot water extract of brown seaweeds Sargassum duplicatum and Sargassum wightii on the growth and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) resistance in shrimp Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL). Artemia nauplii (instar II) were enriched with both seaweed extracts at various concentrations (250, 500 and 750 mg L?1) and fed to the respective P. monodon (PL15–35) group for 20 days. A control group was also maintained without seaweed extract supplementation. The weight gain of the experimental groups was significantly higher (0.274–0.323 g) than the control group (0.261 g). Similarly, the specific growth rate was also significantly higher (16.27–17.06%) in the experimental groups than in the control group (16.03%). After 20 days of the feeding experiment, the shrimp PL were challenged with WSSV for 21 days. During the challenge test, the control shrimp displayed 100% mortality within 8 days. In contrast, the mortality percentage of the highest concentration (750 mg L?1) of seaweed extract enriched Artemia nauplii fed shrimp was 54–79%. Comparatively, low mortality was observed in S. wightii extract‐enriched Artemia nauplii fed shrimp. The polymerase chain reaction analysis indicated the concentration‐dependent infection of WSSV in P. monodon PL.  相似文献

The current study evaluated the effects of dietary seaweed supplementation in European seabass juveniles (Dicentrarchus labrax) subjected to rearing temperature and salinity oscillations, simulating natural variations in pond aquaculture conditions. Two experimental diets where formulated: a control diet (CTRL) with no supplementation and one supplemented with 7.5% seaweed mix (SW 2.5% Fucus sp., 2.5% Gracilaria sp. and 2.5% Ulva sp.). Seabass from both dietary groups (40.7 g initial body weight) was subjected to either combined salinity and temperature oscillations, or to fixed conditions. Growth performance, innate immune, and oxidative stress responses were evaluated. Results showed that seaweed supplementation had no significant effect on the analyzed parameters. However, environmental oscillations revealed significant effects on growth performance and oxidative stress response. Fish subjected to salinity and temperature oscillations had a significantly lower weight gain and daily growth index than those subjected to fixed conditions, regardless of dietary treatment. Total glutathione, oxidized glutathione, and catalase increased in fish subjected to oscillatory conditions. Lysozyme and peroxidase were not influenced by either diet or environmental conditions. In conclusion, this particular dietary seaweed mix supplementation did not mitigate the negative effects of environmental oscillations on growth performance and innate immune responses in European seabass.

Firstly, a linoleic acid emulsion and fish hepatopancreas homogenate were incubated with ethoxyquin and the extracts of Angelica sinensis. The results demonstrated that ethoxyquin showed the strongest protective effects against lipid oxidation of all of the examined compounds (p < 0.05). However, ethyl acetate extract of Angelica sinensis at high concentrations showed a stronger effect on lipid oxidation than that of ethoxyquin (p < 0.05). Next, seven experimental diets that contained 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 g/kg of ethyl acetate extract of Angelica sinensis were fed to seven groups of carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Jian) respectively. After 60 days, carp were exposed to 2.4 mg trichlorfon/L in water for 4 days. The results displayed that trichlorfon exposure increased the contents of malonaldehyde and protein carbonyl in digestive organs and the activities of glutamate‐oxaloacetate and glutamate‐pyruvate transaminase in plasma, and decreased feed intake, the level of reduced glutathione, and the activities of trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase, alpha‐amylase, Na+,K+‐ATPase, alkaline phosphatase, antisuperoxide anion, antihydroxyl radical, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S‐transferase in digestive organs of carp (p < 0.05). Moreover, the dietary ethyl acetate extract of Angelica sinensis prevented the decrease in the above parameters in carp treated with trichlorfon (p < 0.05). These results revealed that the dietary ethyl acetate extract of Angelica sinensis could quench the trichlorfon‐induced structural and functional damage by improving the antioxidative capacity of the digestive organs of fish. Therefore, the extract of Angelica sinensis could be used as an inhibitor of trichlorfon stress in fish.  相似文献
