The incidence of Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), Potato leafroll virus (PLRV), and Potato virus Y (PVY) in potato crops derived from various types of seed potatoes was assessed visually and confirmed by direct tissue blot immunoassay, over two winter growing seasons (1999/2000, 2000/2001) at three locations, Elnaiya, Elshehinab, and Shambat in Khartoum State, the main potato growing region in Sudan. Virus infection was most prevalent in 2000/2001. In general, crops grown directly from imported certified seed potatoes and from “improved seed”, produced in Sudan from imported basic seed, showed the lowest levels of PLRV and PVY compared with crops grown from Sudanese farm saved seed. For AMV, however, only crops grown directly from imported certified seed potatoes had low levels of AMV. Crop location also affected virus incidence, although this varied with year. For AMV, levels were similar at all locations in 1999/2000, but were greatest at Elnaiya in 2000/2001. For PVY, levels were greatest at Elnaiya in 1999/2000 and Shambat in 2000/2001. For PLRV, no symptoms were observed in 1999/2000 and virus levels were similar for all locations in 2000/2001. This study reports for the first time the occurrence of AMV in potatoes grown in Sudan.  相似文献

Summary The Mount Katerina area is isolated, in the middle of the Sinai Desert, and its peak is at an altitude of 2647 m. Trapping with yellow water traps showed that winged aphid populations are small and active mainly in the spring and only until May. Virus-tested tubers of cv. Up-do-Date were planted on 18 May and harvested on 27–29 September. No PLRV, PVY or PVX infection was detected in 319 haulm samples and in 96 progeny tubers. When the Mt Katerina tubers were planted the next spring, they yielded 11% and 7% more than imported and Golan seeds respectively (non-significant differences) and emerged to a greater extent. The results indicate that the Mt Katerina area may be suitable for growing high quality seed-potatoes. Supported in part by BARD Project US-3399-80. Contribution No 815-E, 1983 Series.  相似文献

Volunteer potatoes were investigated as infection sources for potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and potato virus X (PVX) in a high elevation seed potato growing area of eastern Idaho. Population densities ofMyzus persicae were assessed. Percentage of PLRV and PVX infection of the volunteers and seed potato crops was determined, as well as density of volunteers and certain parameters of volunteer growth and reproduction. Volunteers apparently harbored no more PLRV than the potato crop from which they originated. But they were found to be an important reservoir of PVX with the infection increasing as much as 12.43% in one year. No aphids capable of transmitting PLRV were found although one species that can transmit potato virus Y was recorded. The mean density of volunteers varied from 0 to 84,880 stems/ha. The number of tubers remaining in the field after harvest and winter weather conditions appeared to be the only factors affecting volunteer density. Volunteer plants arising from seed pieces at an average depth of 6.1 cm were found to set an average of 2.1 new tubers per plant at an average depth of 4.0 cm. These results suggest that volunteer potatoes are a significant source of PVX infection in subsequent seed potato crops.  相似文献

Summary Field experiments during 1984–6 tested the effects of planting date on the development of aphid infestations and the spread of potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) in rogued or unrogued plots of potatoes, cv. Spunta. Plantings were made each month from December to April, the customary time for planting being February. Aphid infestation in early-planted plots was severe throughout the growing season; plots planted in February were also severely infested early in the growing season but the populations later gradually declined to undetectable levels. Nevertheless, the incidence of PLRV in the latter plots was as high as in those planted in December-January. Late-planted crops escaped aphid infestation and PLRV infection, either in part (March planting) or completely (April planting). Such crops, however, were uneconomical due to poor yields and heavy losses from potato tuber moth infestation. Roguing significantly reduced the spread of PLRV in all years but its interaction with planting date was insignificant.  相似文献

Summary The infection pressure of two viruses, potato leafroll (PLRV) and potato virus Y (PVY), both common in seed potatoes grown in Cyprus, was determined in three experiments in 1982–83. Virus-free bait plants, of potato and four other species, were exposed weekly to field infection during the growing season (March–June), and then returned to an aphid-free glasshouse for symptom expression. Only tobacco plants produced clear symptoms enabling reliable assessment of PVY infection pressure. When assessed with ELISA or by tuber indexing, the potato plants were efficient baits for both viruses whose infection period commenced at emergence (mid March to early April) and ended within 6–7 weeks. The seasonal trend of aphid populations, determined with Moericke traps or 100-leaf counts, correspond to that of virus spread. Correlation and regression analysis of aphid and virus data implicated the alate form ofMyzus persicae as the principal vector of both viruses.  相似文献

Summary Attempts were made to grow seed potatoes in the Gilboa mountains and central Golan Heights both at ca 500 m altitude. The activity of winged aphids was low between May and September, the period suitable for growing seed potatoes. Potato virus X (PVX) and potato virus Y (PVY) were rare. The highest incidence of potato leaf roll (PLRV) was 17% at Gilboa and 5% at Nov (central Golan). In both areas, spindle sprout was a severe problem in progeny tubers and it was associated with a purple top syndrome, probably caused by a mycoplasma, that appeared during growth. Activity of the probable vector, the leafhopperHyalesthes obsoletus, ceases in the Golan after June. Delaying planting until the end of May or later reduced the incidence of purple top and spindle sprout to nil. Both were reduced by Temik treatment and by covering the plots with netting but not by treatments with Rogor and Croneton. All three chemicals reduced PLRV incidence. Therefore, delayed plantings and insecticides may reduce purple top, spindle sprout and PLRV. This work was partly supported by funds of BARD 339-80.  相似文献

Crops of potatoes were successfully grown during each of 7 yrs from botanical seed planted directly into fields. During this period a total of 8 ha of direct-seeded potatoes was grown in 27 trials involving several soil types and several planting, cultural, and irrigation methods. Methods of seed production, extraction, treatment, and planting were developed along with methods of weed and insect control and methods of caring for growing seedlings so they would produce good yields of tubers, many of which were of commercial size and quality and very useful in a breeding program.  相似文献

A direct tissue blotting assay (DTBA) was used to track the movement of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) from newly infected foliage to the tubers. Plant and tuber characteristics were recorded to assess plant growth stage at inoculation and PLRV effect on yield. Russet Burbank potatoes were planted at different times in 1991 and 1992 to provide plants of different maturities which were then inoculated using PLRV carrying aphids. Aphids were allowed to feed two to three days after which an insecticide was applied. Stems and tubers were tested periodically for PLRV with DTBA after inoculation. Indexed tubers were grown out and ELISA tested in the greenhouse the following winter to confirm results of summer serological tests. Plant age affected percentages more consistently than did inoculation date. When plants approximately 43 days from planting were inoculated at different dates, early inoculation produced a higher percentage of infected plants. Conversely, when plants approximately 62 days from planting were inoculated at different dates, late inoculation resulted in a higher percentage of infected plants. However, early inoculation of young plants resulted in the highest infection percentages. Tuber size and yield were negatively affected by higher percentages of leafroll regardless of the stage of growth at inoculation. DTBA is best used for detecting PLRV in foliage of plants grown from infected tubers (i.e. secondary PLRV). DTBA is less accurate for detecting primary PLRV.  相似文献

Altogether 365 isolates of Phytophthora infestans were sampled from potatoes propagated from seed potatoes of high (multiplied for two years in open field after meristem phase) and low (commercial certified seed multiplied for several consecutive years in open field) phytosanitary quality at different phases of epidemic progress during the growing seasons of 2001–2007 from field plots at two experimental institutes in Estonia, North-East Europe. High or low phytosanitary quality of seed potatoes had no effect on mating type ratio or response to metalaxyl in populations of P. infestans isolated from these two different groups of potato material. In contrast, the incidence of certain virulence factors, as well as the diversity of pathotypes, was very high in populations collected from potatoes propagated from low-quality seed in comparison to those from high-quality seed. The incidence of A2 mating type and fully metalaxyl sensitive strains was statistically significantly higher at the epidemic outbreak than later during epidemic progress. The incidence of most virulence factors and overall pathotype diversity were not affected by the temporal progress of the epidemic. Rare virulence factors 5 and 9 were more frequent at the outbreak of the epidemic and declined in the population during the course of epidemic.  相似文献

Summary Since 1981 seed potatoes have been produced on a semi-commercial scale in Cyprus by single multiplication of imported class A stocks. The main virus in these locally produced seed potatoes was potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) which was detected in 369 of 658 seed crops examined, at an average incidence of ca 1.5% (range 0.1%–15%). Tuber infections were detected in 203 of 223 samples tested, at an average incidence of ca 6.8% (range 1–32%), indicating a considerable spread of the virus during local seed multiplication. Potato viruses Y, X and A, and alfalfa mosaic virus occurred at much lower incidence than PLRV. The effect of secondary PLRV infection on ware-potato yield was determined in the cultivars Spunta and Cara, each planted on two different dates. In all four cultivar-planting date combinations there was a very close negative correlation between yield and virus incidence. At 100% infection, losses in total yield varied from 46% (later planting of Cara) to 72% (earlier planting of Spunta). The threshold level of infection for significant losses was ca 10%.  相似文献

Research plots were established in 1996 and 1997 at Klamath Falls and Hermiston, Oregon and Tulelake, California to determine: 1) the extent of seedborne PVY spread during the growing season; 2) effects of seedborne PVY on yield and grade of Russet Norkotah; and 3) the economic consequences of varying levels of seedborne PVY infections. A series of 5 treatments evaluated initial PVY infection levels of 1 to 60% in 1996 and 1 to 98% in 1997. Virus spread occurred earlier and was more extensive at Hermiston than at Klamath Falls or Tulelake. Plants derived from PVY-free seed were nearly 100% PVY infected at early senescence at Hermiston. Comparisons of potatoes grown from PVY-free seed versus potatoes grown from seed where initial PVY infection levels were 60% in 1996 and 100% in 1997 showed seedborne PVY infection at these levels reduced U.S. No. 1 yields by an average of 40% at Hermiston, 20% at Tulelake, and 12% at Klamath Falls. Predicted total yield losses were 0.19, 0.12, and 0.08 Mg ha?1 for each percent of PVY infection at HAREC, IREC, and KES, respectively. Reductions in gross crop value were estimated at 39, 26, and 14%, respectively, based on regression analyses.  相似文献

Seed Potato Production in Poland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this research was to analyze the regional distribution and quality of potato seed production in Poland from 2007 to 2011. The research was based on 10,559 tuber samples taken for the official post-harvest inspection assessment of seed potato lots. A very detailed map of seed plantation locations in Poland was created at the municipality level. The greatest concentration of seed production was from the northern and southern parts of Pomorskie Province, where many seed potatoes were cultivated, and in the north of the Zachodniopomorskie Province, around the towns of Koszalin and Ko?obrzeg. In both provinces, cultivars which were highly susceptible to PVY were cultivated on nearly half of the area. Over time a clear increase in the production of elite material and a decrease in those certified as the lowest category, CB, were observed. The quality of seed potato material was poorest following the harvest in 2008, because of high levels of virus infection; 30 % of the seed lots were not certified. Potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) was recorded occasionally and it is at present of no economic importance in Poland. The role of potato virus Y (PVY), increased, probably because of the growth in the share of foreign cultivars (mainly Dutch) which are more susceptible to PVY. There were also changes in the populations of PVY strains. The share of Polish cultivars in potato seed production decreased to 36.3 % in 2012.  相似文献

When five varieties of virus-free potatoes were introduced and multiplied for three years at an elite seed farm in Prince Edward Island where virus-infected potatoes were also grown, approximatly 10% of each variety became infected with both potato virs S (PVS) and potato virus X (PVX). However, when eight varieties of similar stocks were multiplied for 2 years at private farms in the absence of virus-infected potatoes, all remained free from PVX. Four of the varieties also remained free from PVS and four became infected with amounts of less than 5%. In other tests on these stocks, no potato virus Y (PVY) was detected. Post harvest tuber testing onNicotiana debneyi Domin. was found to be more reliable in detecting recent infections of PVS than foliage tests done during the growing season. This was so whether the foliage tests were done on the indicator plant, serologically or doubly-tested by both methods.  相似文献

The production of potatoes from true seed was studied in direct-sown seed beds during both winter and summer seasons in Lima, Peru. After emergence, seedlings were thinned to give 6, 12, 24, 48 or 96 plants per m2. In all five density treatments plants were arranged in a square configuration. In both seasons, increasing plant density significantly increased total tuber number as well as tuber weights in the grades 1–5 g, 5–20 g and 20–40 g. The yield of tubers larger than 40 g was similar in all densities. In the warm summer season, tuber number was significantly reduced and mean tuber weight was 56% greater compared with that in the winter season. The potential of producing consumer potatoes from true seed in seed beds in warm climates is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The results obtained by four methods for detecting PLRV in potato tubers grown in Israel were compared with the results obtained by aphid transmission to test plants. The correlation coefficients for potatoes lifted in July (seed for autumn) and September (seed for spring) were: Igel-Lange test, 0.18 and 0.25; datura grafting with tuber sprouts, 0.71 and 0.63; aphid transmission from sprouts to test plants, 0.89 and 0.81; and visual assessment in the Florida test (for spring seed), Up-to-Date 0.58, Blanka 0.67 and Désirée 0.33. The Igel-Lange test proved unreliable; datura grafting is time consuming and PLRV symptoms were similar to reactions ofDatura stramonium to wounding and to stress. The results of the Florida test were somewhat variable and were obtained too late. The sprout test was deemed the most suitable as it is accurate and the results can be obtained within two months. Summary In the Negev area of Israel potatoes are grown in two seasons of the year: spring and autumn. Locally grown seed of cv. Up-to-Date prepared for the autumn season are grown in the spring under high-temperature conditions during the last part of the growth period. The response to storage temperature treatments consisted of different degrees of sprouting. Temperatures that encouraged bud development (12–22°C) shortened the dormant period of the tubers by about a month, and usually there is clear apical dominance. However, increasing length of the apical bud was positively correlated with storage temperature. Partial loss of apical dominance was obtained when the tubers were held at a low temperature (4°C) for at least two months after lifting. After transfer of the tubers to high temperatures for another month, there were 3 or 4 sprouts per tuber. The physiological age of seed tubers developing in the semi-arid region is discussed. Increasing prevalence of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) and potato virus Y (PVY) has been reported in seed and commercial potato production, resulting in the rejection of potatoes for certification and processing. Host plant resistance to PLRV and PVY and their primary vector, green peach aphid,Myzus persicae, could limit the spread of these viruses. Host plant resistance to PLRV, PVY, and green peach aphid has been identified in non-tuber-bearingSolanum etuberosum (PI 245939) and in its backcross 2 (BC2) progeny. Resistance to green peach aphid involved a reduction in fecundity and adult aphid size. In addition, one BC2 individual was identified as possessing a genetic factor that was detrimental to nymph survival. PVY resistance was identified in all five BC2 progenies evaluated in a field screening under intense virus pressure. PLRV resistance was identified in two of the five BC2 progeny. This resistance was stable in field and cage evaluations with large populations of viruliferous aphids. Based on the segregation of virus resistances in the BC2 , PVY and PLRV resistances appear to result from the action of independent genetic mechanisms that reduce the levels of primary and secondary virus infection. Two BC2 individuals, Etb 6-21-3 and Etb 6-21-5 were identified as having multiple resistances to PLRV, PVY, and green peach aphid derived fromS. etuberosum. This germplasm could prove useful to potato breeders in the development of virus-resistant cultivars.  相似文献

Growing potatoes from cuttings for seed and table potato production has great potential in Asia. There is limited information available explaining the agronomic methodology of growing cuttings in the field. This research was conducted to assess the importance of 4 management variables on the growth and tuber yield of cuttings. Three planting systems were evaluated with and without hilling. Only hilling significantly improved yields and increased tuber number per plant by 50%. Hilling also reduced tuber greening. Increasing plant population from 40,000 to 100,000 per hectare resulted in a yield increase of at least 50%, however average tuber size decreased. Pruning of the apical shoot at or after transplanting did not improve branching, canopy cover or tuber yield. Yields from cuttings were equal to or greater than the tuber seed grown control treatments. Yields ranged from 15 to 20 t/ha which is acceptable for the warm growing conditions. These results show the potential of using cuttings in commercial growing of potatoes in the warm tropics where tuber seed is difficult to obtain and maintain.  相似文献
