A perennial ryegrass sward was cut at a leafy stage of growth and harvested with different harvesters to produce silages differing in chop length to evaluate the effect of silage chop length on silage intake and on the performance of store Iambs when silage was fed as the sole diet. The silage was harvested in late May either as long silage (L), single-chopped (S). double-chopped (D). long precision-chopped (LP) or medium precision-chopped (MP) silage with (he appropriate machinery. The silages were treated with formic acid at 2.5 1 t?1. were well preserved (pH 3.7–3.8) and were of high dry-matter digestibility [749–810 g DMD kg?1 dry-matter (DM)]. The silages were fed ad libitum as the sole diet to Suffolk crossbred store lambs over a period of 11 weeks. Silage intake and lamb performance progressively increased as silage chop length declined from 32.4 cm (L) to 6.8 cm (MP). Silage intakes were 572, 661, 750, 893 and 1129 (± 21) g DM d?1 for silages L, S, D, LP and MP respectively. The corresponding daily liveweight gains were -3, 40, 53, 85 and 151 (± 7.6) g d?l. Similar increases in empty body weight gain and carcass weight gain were obtained as silage chop length declined. Rumen retention time (RRT), estimated from the rumen contents of the lambs at slaughter and their silage intake in the week before slaughter, was much shorter for silages LP and MP compared with silages L or S. Silage intake was negatively related to RRT(b= -24.5 ± 6.1 gDM h?l RRT). The results of this study showed that high intakes of grass silage and liveweight gains were achieved when grass was cut at a leafy stage of growth and harvested with a precision-chop harvester set to produce a moderate chop length (7 cm). The feeding of long or flail-chopped silages resulted in lower intakes and lower liveweight gains.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out with grass silages cut at a leafy (Experiment 1) and a more mature (Experiment 2) stage of growth to evaluate the effect of wilting and chop length on silage intake and performance of store lambs. In each experiment, the herbage was cut with a rotary mower and was either ensiled within 24 h as unwilled silage (U) or wilted for 1–3 d (W). Each silage type was harvested with either a double-chop harvester (D) or a precision-chop harvester (P). All silages were treated with formic acid at 3 1 t?1 and were well preserved. The silages were fed ad libitum to Suffolk crossbred store lambs (twenty-four lambs per treatment) without any supplement over a period of 8 or 9 weeks. Wilting of the silages had little effect on silage intake (797 vs. 809g dry matter (DM) d?1) or on lamb performance in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2, wilting of the D silage increased silage DM intake (589 vs. 534 g DM d?1; +10%) and reduced the extent of liveweight losses. Wilting of the P silage reduced silage intake (770 vs. 791g DM d?1; -3%) and reduced liveweight gains. In Experiment 1 intakes of the D silages were 650–667g DM d?1 and just maintained lamb live weights. Intakes of the P silages were 39–49% higher than the D silages (927–968 g DM d?1) and increased liveweight gains. In Experiment 2 intakes of the D silages were 534–589 g DM d?1 and resulted in a loss in lamb live weight. Precision-chopping increased silage intakes by 31–48% (770–791 DM d?1)in Experiment 2 and improved lamb liveweight gains. Lamb performance was higher on the UP silage than on the WP silage. The rumen retention lime (RRT), estimated from the rumen contents of the lambs at slaughter and their silage intake before slaughter, was much shorter for the lambs fed on the P silages (12.6–20.6 h) than those fed on the D silages (21.4–29.3 h) in each experiment. Silage intake and liveweight gain were positively related to silage in vivo DM digestibility (DMD), whereas RRT was negatively related to DMD. However, there were distinct differences between the P and D silages in the elevation and, to a lesser extent, in the slope of the regression lines, indicating that intake of D silage was limited by factors other than the digestibility of the silage The results of this study show that the chop length of grass silage had a far greater effect on intake and on lamb performance than silage digestibility, whereas wilting had little or no effect.  相似文献

Effects of grass silage feed value on intake, dietary sorting, body condition (BC) and body weight (BW) of pregnant and lactating ewes and on liveweight gain (LWG) of their suckling lambs were evaluated. Twin‐bearing ewes were fed ad libitum grass silage of (i) high feed value (HFV), (ii) medium feed value (MFV) and (iii) low feed value (LFV), plus 0·8 kg concentrate in late pregnancy and lactation. The HFV, MFV and LFV silages contained 11·7, 10·8 and 9·3 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) kg?1 DM respectively. The HFV resulted in 8·2 and 15·2 MJ greater ME intake in pregnancy and 14·7 and 21·0 MJ greater ME intake from silage in lactation than MFV and LFV respectively (< 0·01). Ewes fed the MFV and LFV silages sorted for more digestible particles during eating (< 0·10). The HFV gave no loss in BC, whereas ewes fed MFV and LFV lost 0·7 and 0·8 units of BC, respectively, during lactation (< 0·10). There were similar trends in BW. The nursing HFV lambs had 73 g higher daily LWG than the LFV lambs (< 0·01). In conclusion, the HFV increased the ME intake of pregnant and lactating ewes, resulting in improved BC and BW of lactating ewes and LWG of suckling lambs compared to MFV and LFV.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with sheep to investigate the effect of silage chop length on voluntary intake and eating and ruminating behaviour. The silages, made from Italian rye-grass, either received no additive or formic acid at a rate of 4 g kg?1 and were chopped to lengths of 5.3 cm (long), 1.8 cm (short) before ensiling or 1.8 cm (long/short) before feeding. The addition of the additive and short chopping improved the fermentation characteristics of the silage. Voluntary intake of silage dry matter and organic matter was higher with the short than with the long silage. Differences in silage digestibilities and cellulolytic activity did not explain the increase in silage intake. Sheep on the long silage had a lower rate of intake and a shorter ruminating time than on short silage, and thus the effective breakdown of the silage in the rumen was delayed, i.e. an increased latency time. Pseudo-rumination was significantly higher on the long than on the short silage.  相似文献

Masham ewes, stocked at 20 ewes ha−1, reared twins at pasture in 1979 and 1980 and were rotationally grazed around six paddocks. There were three lengths of grazing cycle (18, 30 or 42 d) and the ewes at pasture were either offered silage ad libitum (S) for 8 weeks of lactation or they were not supplemented with silage (N). By feeding silage, S ewes and lambs moved into greater herbage masses (3735 u. 3390 kg organic matter (OM) ha−1), but there was little effect on net herbage accumulation (10.5 v. 10.0 t OM ha−1) and herbage intakes per ewe were similar (2.31 v . 2.27 kg OM d−1) over the 7-month grazing season. During the period of silage supplementation, total intake was 19% higher for S than N ewes, lamb growth rates were slightly higher (280 v . 273 g d−1) and the ewes lost less weight (−78 v −96 g d−1).
For 18-, 30- and 42-d grazing cycles respectively the herbage masses before grazing were 2825, 3620 and 4240 kg OM ha−1; net herbage accumulations were 9.8, 10.4 and 10.6 t OM ha−1; mean daily herbage intakes by each unit (ewe+lambs) were 2.22, 2.35 and 2.30 kg OM and lamb growth rates from birth to weaning at 20 weeks were 205, 204 and 204 g d−1.
Frequent grazing of relatively light herbage masses or infrequent defoliation of heavier herbage masses made little difference to sward or animal performance. It is concluded that, at this stocking rate, different grazing cycles of 18, 30 or 42 d do not affect the performance of lactating ewes.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of diets containing pearl millet silage ammoniated with urea on the intake, digestibility, production performance, and nitrogen metabolism of lambs. Thirty‐two uncastrated mixed‐breed lambs at 4 to 5 months of age, with an average initial body weight of 17.39 ± 2.16 kg, were distributed into four treatments in a randomized block experimental design with eight replicates. Experimental diets consisted of pearl millet silage ammoniated with urea during ensiling at the levels of 0, 20, 40, and 60 g/kg dry matter (DM). Increasing urea levels in the pearl millet silage led to a linear decrease (p < .05) in the intakes of DM, organic matter, and total digestible nutrients by the lambs. Total and average daily weight gains decreased linearly (p < .05) with the addition of urea to the silage. Intake and digestibility of crude protein, nitrogen intake, urine urea nitrogen, plasma urea nitrogen, microbial synthesis, and microbial efficiency had a quadratic response (p < .05) to the urea levels in the silage. Pearl millet silage ammoniated with urea reduces dry‐matter intake and daily weight gain in lambs. Urea is not recommended for use in the ensiling of pearl millet.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to examine silage fermentation, effluent production and aerobic stability in unwilted grass silage, which was either ensiled without additive or with a commercially available blend of ammonium hexamethanoate, ammonium hexapropionate and octanoic acid (6 l t?1, Maxgrass, BP Chemicals Ltd., Northwich, UK) and to determine alternative approaches to obtaining the same performance in finishing beef cattle. Seventy‐two Limousin × Friesian and Charolais × Friesian steers (mean initial live weight 424 kg s.d. 28·3) were blocked into groups of nine according to live weight and previous performance and offered silage, either with or without the additive, and supplemented with 0, 1·5, 3·0 or 4·5 kg d?1 of a concentrate with a crude protein content of 150 g kg?1 DM or allocated to a pre‐experimental slaughter group to enable calculation of daily carcass gain. Daily silage intakes were recorded for 112 days. At the end of the experiment, all cattle were slaughtered and daily carcass gain, omental, mesenteric, perinephric and retroperitoneal fat depots [kidney‐knob and channel fat (KKCF)], fatness, conformation, subcutaneous fat depth over M. longissimus dorsi muscle and carcass fat, protein and bone contents were assessed. Across all levels of supplementation, cattle offered the silage with the additive showed significantly (P < 0·001) higher daily DM intakes than those offered the silage without additive. Cattle offered the silage with the additive but unsupplemented had significantly (P < 0·001) higher daily carcass gains than those offered the silage without additive and unsupplemented. The response in carcass gain was 76 and 35 g kg?1 additional concentrate for the silages with and without the additive respectively.  相似文献

Silages were made from pure crops of perennial ryegrass, red clover and white clover over 2 years. In all but one case the silage was stored as bales. A silage additive specially adapted for bales (Kofasil UltraTM) was used for all silages and they were all of good hygienic quality. The additive contained sodium nitrite, hexamethylene, tetraamine sodium bensoate and sodium propionate. The silages were offered ad libitum, either pure or mixed [grass/clover 0·50/0·50 on a dry‐matter (DM) basis] with a fixed amount (8 kg) of concentrate. Two experiments, one in each year, were performed with high‐yielding multiparous dairy cows in mid‐lactation, and both rumen‐cannulated and intact cows were used. The experiments were carried out using an incomplete changeover design with fifteen cows and five treatments each year. The cows consumed large quantities of these silages (12·7–16·3 kg DM per cow per day). The highest intakes were obtained when the red clover and the 0·50 red clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass silage diets were offered. However, there was a difference between years. In year 1, 0·50 red clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass and 0·50 white clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass silage diets showed the highest intakes while pure perennial ryegrass and white clover silage diets gave lower intakes. In year 2 the highest intake of silage was obtained when the diet containing silage from red clover from a second cut was offered, while the silage from red clover from a first cut gave the lowest intake. The voluntary intakes of silages from white clover and perennial ryegrass were intermediate. No cases of bloat or other digestive disturbances were observed. Milk yield was significantly lower for the perennial ryegrass silage diet compared with all other diets in year 1. In year 2 milk yield was highest for the white clover silage diets and lowest for the red clover silage diets from both cuts. In year 1 there were relatively small differences in milk composition while in year 2 milk fat content was significantly lower with white clover silage diet and milk protein content was significantly higher with the perennial ryegrass diet. The overall conclusion from these experiments was that cows were able to consume large quantities of pure legume silage without serious disturbance to their metabolism. Differences in measurements of rumen metabolism were found between diets and especially between years. Milk production differences appears to be coupled to both differences in rumen physical characteristics, such as passage rate and particle size as well as differences in volatile fatty acid production in the rumen.  相似文献

Two areas of an early-heading perennial ryegrass cv. Cropper were harvested by either a precision-chop or a flail harvester at around 50% ear emergence (15 May 1978) and 14d later (29 May). Formic acid (85%) was applied at the rate of 2·2 litres t-1. Mature crossbred wethers were used in a 2 × 2 factorial design to determine the effect of stage of maturity and method of harvesting (chop length) on the in vivo digestibilities of formic acid-treated grass in experiment 1 and formic acid silage in experiment 2. Apparent digestibility coefficients were determined at a fixed level of feeding for both grass and silage and at ad libitum access to feed for silage only. There were no significant differences in the concentrations of crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), acid-detergent fibre (ADF) or acid-detergent lignin (ADL) in grass or silages of differing chop lengths but the later cut forages had significantly higher ADF and ADL concentrations and lower CP concentrations than the early-cut forages. The ADF and ADL concentrations were also higher in the silages than in the corresponding grasses. In general, the fermentation characteristics of precision-chopped silage were better than for the corresponding flail-cut silage but date of harvest was a more important determinant of quality and the late, flail-cut silage had the highest butyrate and ammonia N concentrations and the highest pH (411) of any treatment. There was a significantly higher intake of precision-chopped as compared with flail-cut silage with both the early-and the late-cut silage but there were no significant differences attributable to stage of maturity (i.e. date of harvest) or significant interaction between chop length and maturity. The slightly increased intake of early harvested, precision-chopped silage as compared with late precision-chopped silage was not significant. Dry matter digestibility (DMD) of the grass decreased at a rate of 0004 units d-1 post 50% ear emergence. The results of experiment 2 indicated a decrease of 0·207 units d-1 in silage fed at a similar level. The late-cut silage (DMD 0·292, mean of both harvesting treatments) thus had a significantly lower digestibility than the corresponding grass (mean DMD 0·247). Chop length had a variable influence on the DMD of both grass and silage fed at a fixed level but treatment differences were non-significant. However, a trend towards higher digestibility of flail-cut as compared with precision-chopped silage was apparent and this became statistically significant when the animals were allowed ad libitum access to feed. The fermentation quality of small‐bale silage and haylage for feeding to horses in Sweden, and using a conventional high‐density hay baler, was investigated in two experiments. Treatments studied were use of additives (inoculants containing lactic acid bacteria and a chemical additive consisting of hexamethylenetetramine, sodium nitrate, sodium benzoate and sodium propionate), the influence of dry‐matter (DM) content of wilted herbage and the effect of number of stretch film layers on fermentation pattern and aerobic stability. All silages and haylages were made from predominantly Timothy swards and were well fermented as indicated by low levels of ammonia and butyric acid. Values of pH were higher and concentrations of organic acids were lower in haylages than in the silages. This was not considered to be indicative of a poor fermentation in the haylage but of a restricted fermentation due to the high DM content of the herbage. The additives enhanced aerobic storage stability because of inhibition of mould growth. The only statistically significant effect of varying the number of stretch film layers was a higher content of CO2 inside the bales when ten layers of stretch film were applied compared with six layers.  相似文献

Lactobacillus buchneri was investigated as a silage inoculant and as a probiotic on feed intake, apparent digestibility, and ruminal fermentation and microbiology in wethers fed low‐dry‐matter (DM) whole‐crop maize silage. Maize forage (279 g/kg DM) was ensiled without inoculant (untreated) and with L. buchneri CNCM I‐4323 at 1 × 10cfu/g fresh forage (inoculated). Six cannulated wethers were arranged in a double 3 × 3 Latin square and assigned to one of three diets: (i) untreated maize silage (untreated), (ii) inoculated maize silage (inoculated), and (iii) untreated maize silage with a daily dose of L. buchneri (1 × 10cfu/g supplied silage) injected directly into the rumen (LB‐probiotic). Wethers fed the inoculated diet had a higher (= .050) DM intake (1.30% body weight [BW]) than wethers fed untreated and LB‐probiotic diets (1.17% and 1.18% BW respectively). The relative proportion of Ruminococcus flavefaciens (proportion of total estimated rumen bacterial 16S rDNA) in the rumen of wethers fed inoculated and LB‐probiotic diets (both 0.42%) tended (= .098) to be lower than in the untreated diet (0.83%). Lactobacillus buchneri as a silage inoculant or as a probiotic had little effect on the variables measured in wethers.  相似文献

In three experiments the effects of restricting the silage ration of dairy cows and of offering alternative forages as buffer feeds were investigated.
In the first experiment of changeover design with 3-week periods, restricting the intake of low-quality silage to 0.62 of ad libitum had no significant effect on milk yield in spite of the large energy deficit. Offering high-quality hay as a buffer feed increased total DM intake and milk production of cows receiving either restricted or ad libitum silage.
In the second experiment of similar design, restricting the DM intake of high-quality silage to 0·58 of ad libitum significantly reduced milk yield and was associated with a large negative energy balance. Offering straw or ammonia-treated straw with the restricted silage diet did not restore milk production to the level achieved with ad libitum silage but these supplements slightly reduced the energy deficit of the cows. In the third experiment of continuous design lasting 7 weeks, restricting the silage ration to 0.85 of ad libitum had no significant effect on milk production. Offering a strawmix based on straw, barley, molasses and soya with the restricted silage ration restored total DM intake to the ad libitum silage level.
In all three experiments milk protein content was reduced by restricting the silage ration and partially restored by offering alternative forages. There were no significant effects on milk fat content and milk lactose content was only reduced by the severest restriction in Experiment 2. It is concluded that short-term minor restrictions of silage intake can be partly sustained by body fat mobilization but more severe restrictions will result in loss of milk yield. Good-quality hay and a strawmix were of benefit in restoring DM and metabolizable energy intakes, whereas straw and ammonia-treated straw were of little value.  相似文献

Eight grass silages were made from two contrasting varieties of perennial ryegrass, four silages each from a late-cut early-maturing (high dry matter, HDM) variety and from an early-cut, late-maturing (low dry matter, LDM) variety. The grass was ensiled without additive (untreated), or with formic acid, or with one of two enzyme mixtures of hemicellulases and cellulases (enzyme 1 and enzyme 2) for a period of 130 d.
Formic acid-treated silage had lower levels of lactic acid at both levels of dry matter than the other silages. Enzyme treatment of grass prior to ensilage resulted in reduced levels of cellulose, acid-detergent fibre and neutral-detergent fibre in LDM silages and lower acid-detergent fibre and neutral-detergent fibre in the HDM silages compared with the corresponding untreated and formic acid-treated silages. Voluntary intakes (g DM d−1) of untreated and enzyme-treated silages were significantly ( P <0·01) lower at both digestibilities compared with formic acid-treated silages (LDM: untreated, 982; formic, 1069; enzyme 1, 868; enzyme 2, 937; HDM: untreated, 931; formic, 1027; enzyme 1, 943; enzyme 2, 914). The organic matter, carbohydrate and nitrogen digestibility coefficients of LDM silages were significantly ( P <0·001) higher than those of HDM silages. There were no significant differences in any component digestibility related to silage additive.
Comparison of digestibility coefficients for constituents of the LDM silages fed to sheep or steers showed no differences between species.  相似文献

Two randomized-block experiments were conducted to examine the effects of frequency of harvesting grass for silage on the intake and performance of beef cattle. In both experiments swards of S24 perennial ryegrass were harvested at 63-, 49- and 38-d intervals throughout the growing season. Grass harvested before and after 10 July was ensiled separately and termed spring and autumn silage respectively. In Experiment 1 the silages were offered ad libitum either unsupplemented or supplemented with 2 kg barley per head daily to eighty-four Hereford-cross weaned, single-suckled steer calves of mean initial live weight 284 kg, in a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design. Silage dry matter (DM) intakes and liveweight gains for the silages harvested at 63-, 49- and 38-d intervals were 4.80, 0.72; 4.49,0.76; and 4.62,0.78 kg d−1 for the spring silages and 4.69, 0.67; 4.59, 0.85; and 4.55,0.86 kg d−1 for the autumn silages respectively. There was no significant interaction between frequency of harvesting and concentrate supplementation. In Experiment 2 the silages were offered ad libitum and unsupplemented to forty-two Hereford-cross weaned, single-suckled steer calves of mean initial live weight 240 kg, and forty-two Hereford-cross store cattle of mean initial live weight 356 kg, in a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design. Silage DM intakes and liveweight gains for the silages harvested at 63-, 49- and 38-d intervals were 4.94,0.49; 5.69,0.80; and 619,0.93 kg d−1 for the spring silages and 5.50, 0.61; 5.57, 0.72; and 505, 0.65 kg d−1 for the autumn silages respectively. There were no significant interactions between frequency of harvesting and type of animal. It is concluded that a cutting interval of 49 d commencing on 21 May is likely to be optimum for this type of sward except under exceptional weather conditions.  相似文献

A meta‐analysis was performed to determine the effects of feeding ruminants with tropical legume silages on intake, digestibility and performance using a data set with 218 treatments (162 containing legumes, 56 without legumes) from 62 trials. First, a regression analysis was performed for diets containing legumes. Dry‐matter intake (DMI) and digestibility decreased with increasing legume proportion, with greater effects on large compared with small ruminants. Milk yield (MY) by dairy cows was not affected by legumes. Average daily gain (ADG) by cattle was maximized with legume silage inclusion between 200 and 400 g/kg DM, but no effect appeared for small ruminants. A second analysis compared diets without legumes with diets with medium (101–400 g/kg DM) and high (401–800 g/kg DM) legume inclusion. There were no differences in DMI, MY and ADG between the medium inclusion and without legumes, but all these parameters decreased with high inclusion. Digestibility was lower in diets with legume silages than in diets without legumes, regardless of the inclusion level. Feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was highest in diets with medium inclusion and lowest with high legume inclusion. While high legume inclusion negatively affected performance, including legume silages up to 400 g/kg DM seems to enhance or at least maintain MY, ADG and FCE, despite lower intake and digestibility. The reasons for such apparent paradox remain unclear. Well‐designed studies focusing on, e.g. microbial protein synthesis, energy metabolism, protein/carbohydrates characteristics, are required to better understand the effects of tropical legumes silages on nutrients’ utilization.  相似文献

This review examines the response in intake of silage and animal performance after wilting of grass before ensiling. It uses data from eighty‐five published comparisons. Initial analysis identified those variables having the greatest influence on the increase in dry‐matter (DM) intake of grass silage owing to wilting. Total water loss, drying rate of the wilted material and ammonia‐N concentration of the unwilted material were the variables most closely and positively correlated to the proportional increase in DM intake as a result of wilting, with r2 values of 0·344, 0·393 and 0·240 respectively. There was little evidence of curvilinearity in any of the relationships. Stepwise regression analysis was used to identify the best multiple linear regressions for predicting the proportional increase in intake owing to wilting. Factors associated with the extent and rate of water loss in the field (total water loss and drying rate) and the quality of the unwilted material ensiled and its subsequent fermentation pattern (DM digestibility, crude protein, ammonia‐N content of unwilted silage) were the key variables in the relationship. Subsequent analysis related the increase in output of milk energy of dairy cows and liveweight gain of beef cattle to the same independent variables. This indicated that variables shown to describe the response in DM intake in the previous analysis were among those most closely related to the increases in animal performance owing to wilting of grass. To assess whether the increase in animal performance owing to wilting could be explained as a direct response to increased metabolizable energy (ME) intake of wilted compared with unwilted silages, linear relationships were derived between the increase in milk and beef production parameters and the increase in ME intake owing to wilting. From these, it was concluded that there was no clear evidence that wilting reduced the efficiency of utilization of ME in beef or dairy cattle. The present study showed that the increase in milk energy output (measured in MJ) per increase in ME intake (measured in MJ) owing to wilting was linear, with a slope of 0·19. This response from additional ME intake owing to wilting is in line with what would be anticipated when increasing ME intake by other methods.  相似文献

The effect of feeding either traditional concentrates containing starch or high quality fibrous concentrates on the performance of grazing dairy cows was examined in a trial in which cows were given concentrates with either 350 g starch and sugars (kg dry matter (DM))-1 (high-starch) or 100 g starch and sugars (kg DM)-1 (high-fibre). The swards used consisted predominantly of perennial ryegrass and were usually aftermaths following cutting. Each area was grazed for 3 or 4 d at each grazing and a two-machine sward-cutting technique was used for estimating herbage intake.
The effect of concentrate composition on the herbage intake of grazing cows at a high daily herbage allowance of 28 kg OM above 4 cm cutting height was investigated in 1983 and 1984. With 54 kg OM d-1 of high-starch concentrates the mean herbage intake was 11·5 kg OM d-1 per cow while cows fed 5.3 kg d-1 of high-fibre concentrates consumed on average 12–6 kg OM d-1. The mean substitution rate of herbage by concentrates was reduced from 0·45 kg herbage OM (kg concentrate OM)-1 with the high-starch concentrate to 0·21 with the high-fibre concentrates.
The effect of the treatments on milk production was studied in 1984. The cows consumed 5·5 kg OM d-1 as concentrates and grazed at a lower herbage allowance of 19 kg OM above 4 cm cutting height. With high-fibre concentrates milk production and 4% fat-corrected milk production were 13 and 1·8 kg d-1, respectively, higher than with the high-starch treatment. The daily live weight gain with the high-starch concentrates was 0·17 kg per cow more than with the high-fibre concentrates.  相似文献

An Italian ryegrass and hybrid ryegrass sward was harvested on 11 May 1994. The mean dry‐matter (DM) content of the herbage was 197 g kg–1 fresh matter (FM), and mean nitrogen and water‐soluble carbohydrate contents were 20 and 272 g kg–1 DM respectively. Approximately 72% of total nitrogen (TN) was in the form of protein‐nitrogen. The herbage was treated with either no additive, formic acid (3·3 l t–1) (Add‐F, BP) or inoculant (2·3 l t–1) (Live‐system, Genus) and ensiled in 100 t silos. Changes in effluent composition with time showed that silage fermentation and protein breakdown were delayed by treatment with formic acid. Formic acid and inoculant treatments also inhibited amino acid catabolism during ensilage. All silages were well fermented at opening with pH values < 4·0 and ammonia‐N concentrations of ≤ 50 g kg–1 TN after 120 d ensilage. Treatment had an effect on protein breakdown as measured by free amino acid concentration, with values of 21·5, 18·2 and 13·2 mol kg–1 N at opening (191 d) for untreated, formic acid‐treated and inoculated silages respectively. Amino acid catabolism occurred to the greatest extent in untreated silages with significant decreases in glutamic acid, lysine and arginine, and increases in gamma amino butyric acid and ornithine. The silages were offered ad libitum without concentrate supplementation to thirty‐six Charolais beef steers for a period of 69 d (mean live weight 401 kg). Silage dry‐matter intakes and liveweight gains were significantly (P < 0·05) higher on the treated silages. Silage dry‐matter intakes were 7·42, 8·41 and 8·23 kg d–1 (s.e.d. 0·27) with liveweight gains of 0·66, 0·94 and 0·89 kg d–1 (s.e.d. 0·058) for untreated, formic acid‐treated and inoculated silage‐fed cattle respectively. In conclusion, additives increased the intake of silage and liveweight gain by the beef steers, and it is suggested that this may be caused in part by the amino acid balance in these silages.  相似文献

In an experiment, involving twelve male cattle (initially 235 kg live weight), the effects of applying lactic acid bacteria [Lactobacillus plantarum; 109 colony-forming units (g fresh silage)?1] to grass silage, immediately prior to that silage being fed, on dry-matter (DM) intake of the silage, degradability of nitrogen (N) and fibre in the rumen, total tract digestibility and composition of rumen fluid in the animals were examined. A grass silage, which had been made from the primary growth of a predominantly perennial ryegrass sward, was offered as the sole diet. The inoculant was applied to the silage at the rate of 2 g of freeze-dried powder reconstituted in 12 ml of water (kg fresh silage)?1 immediately prior to that silage being fed and an equivalent amount of water was applied to the silage in the control treatment. The two diets were compared in a change-over design. The silage was well preserved, having a pH and concentrations of ammonia N and butyrate of 3.72, 74 g (kg total N)?1 and 0.11 g (kg DM)?1 respectively. Application of the inoculant significantly increased true protein, acid-insoluble N and water-soluble carbohydrate concentrations (P < 0.001) in the diet. Silage DM intake was not significantly increased (P= 0.072) by this of inoculant treatment, which had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on rumen degradability or total tract digestibility of DM, N, neutral detergent fibre or modified acid detergent fibre. Rumen pH, ammonia concentration or the molar proportions of volatile fatty acids were not altered (P>0.05) by inoculant treatment. It is concluded that application of the inoculant to the silage prior to silage being fed did not significantly affect silage DM intake, total tract digestibility, or degradability or fermentation in the rumen of cattle offered grass silage as the sole diet. It is also concluded that the results of this experiment provide no evidence that the mode of action of L plantarum, applied as an additive to grass at ensiling in previous studies, is through ‘direct’ effects in the rumen.  相似文献

This paper, the first of a two-part series, aims to find the effect of stitch length, check spring tension, fabric feed timing and needle thread in-take length on tension peaks occurring on a spun polyester needle thread during a sewing cycle of a SNLS sewing machine. The pre-tensions on the bobbin and needle threads and sewing speed were kept constant. A PC interfaced measuring instrument was fabricated to measure dynamic sewing tension on needle thread above the needle bar. Four prominent tension peaks were detected. Longer stitch length causes higher tension peaks; and shorter length stitch requires higher pre-tension to obtain a balanced stitch. The check spring tension has no effect on tightening tension. Incorrect timing of feed dog can cause very high tightening tension. The change in the position of thread length guide alters the friction of needle thread at critical guides which determines the length of thread to be released through tensioner; release of longer length of thread results in lower tension peaks (1, 2 and 4) and vice versa.  相似文献
