It has been found that the total productivity of bacteria and micromycetes in the 0- to 50-cm layer of homogeneous cryozems (Cryosols) on slopes of northern and southern exposures varies from 1.2 to 1.4 t/ha, respectively, and the calculated content of microbial carbon varies in the range 0.7–0.9 t/ha. The respiratory activity of the upper soil layer is 2.5–2.6 μg C–CO2/(g h); the potential methane formation capacity reaches 0.13 nmol CH4/(m2 day) for soils on slopes of northern exposure and 0.16 nmol CH4/(m2 day) for slopes of southern exposure. Accumulation of sorbed ammonium is recorded in the range 15–17 mg NH4/100 g soil in summer. The increase of temperature in the upper horizons of soils on slopes of southern exposure by 5°C compared to the northern slopes results in only an insignificant increase in the emission of CO2 and CH4. The accumulation of sorbed ammonium and nitrate nitrogen in homogeneous cryozems during the vegetation period is comparable to that in gray forest soils of the southern taiga subzone of the Middle Siberia.  相似文献

Soil organisms in terrestrial systems are unevenly distributed in time and space, and often aggregated. Spatio-temporal patchiness in the soil environment is thought to be crucial for the maintenance of soil biodiversity, providing diverse microhabitats tightly interweaving with resource partitioning. Determination of a “scale unit” to help understand ecological processes has become one of the important and most debatable problems in recent years. A fieldwork was carried out in the northern Negev Desert highland, Israel to determine the influence of fine-scale landscape patch moisture heterogeneity on biogeochemical variables and microbial activity linkage in a desert ecosystem. The results showed that the spatio-temporal patchiness of soil moisture to which we attribute influential properties, was found to become more heterogenic with the decrease in soil moisture availability (from 8.2 to 0.4 g kg−1) toward the hot, dry seasons, with coefficient of variation (CV) change amounting to 66.9%. Spatio-temporal distribution of organic matter (OM) and total soluble nitrogen (TSN) was found to be relatively uniformly distributed throughout the wet seasons (winter and spring), with increase of relatively high heterogeneity toward the dry seasons (from 0.25% to 2.17% for OM, and from 0 to 10.2 mg kg−1 for TSN) with CV of 47.4% and 99.7% for OM and TSN, respectively. Different spatio-temporal landscape patterns were obtained for Ca (CV = 44.6%), K (CV = 34.4%), and Na (CV = 92%) ions throughout the study period. CO2 evolution (CV = 48.6%) was found to be of lower heterogeneity (varying between 2 and 39 g CO2-C g−1 dry soil h−1) in the moist seasons, e.g., winter and spring, with lower values of respiration coupled with high heterogeneity of Na+ and low levels of TSN and organic matter content, and with more homogeneity in the dry seasons (varying between 1 and 50 g CO2-C g−1 dry soil h−1). Our results elucidate the heterogeneity and complexity of desert system habitats affecting soil biota activity.  相似文献

Soil erosion and runoff were monitored from 1988 to 1990 on a Miamian soil (Typic Hapludalf) of 5-6 per cent slope using field runoff plots. Four treatments were studied: (i) disk-plough up and down the slope to 0.3 m depth (DP); (ii) disk-plough up and down the slope followed by a protective netting (PN); (iii) uncultivated fallow without any vegetation followed by surface soil removal (R); (iv) uncultivated fallow with natural vegetation followed by ploughing (F). Mean annual runoff losses were 6, 114 and 128 mm, or 4, 20 and 18 per cent of the rainfall, and mean annual soil losses were 1.2, 85.0 and 64.0 Mg ha−1 in 1988, 1989 and 1990, respectively. Mean runoff amounts were 26, 69, 116 and 118mm and mean annual soil losses were 0.4, 23.2, 58.6 and 118 Mg ha−1 for the F, PN, DP and R treatments, respectively. In comparison with DP, PN decreased annual runoff by 40.3 per cent and annual soil loss by 79.5 per cent. The high mean soil loss for the R treatment was due to erosion following soil removal. An additional 2920 Mg ha−1 of surface soil was removed from the R treatment in May 1990. The F treatment reduced runoff by 78, 77 and 62 per cent and reduced soil loss by 99.7, 99.4 and 98.4 per cent compared with the R, DP and PN treatments, respectively. Mean losses of K, Ca, Mg and P were 1.3, 4, 1 and 01 kg ha−1, respectively for F, 3, 16, 5 and 0.3kg ha−1, respectively, for PN, 5, 31, 1 and 0.6kg ha−1, respectively, for DP, and 3, 32, 12 and 0.4 kg ha−1, respectively, for R. Soil and nutrient losses for each treatment were in the order R > DP > PN > F. The soil organic carbon (SOC) content was significantly affected by soil erosion and management treatments, and ranged from 0.98 per cent for the R treatment to 2.3 per cent for the F treatment. Soil surface removal for the R treatment in 1990 reduced water-stable aggregates (WSA) by 9.0 per cent, SOC by 0.6 per cent, and clay content of the uppermost 0-50 mm depth by about 7.0 per cent. Mean total porosity (ft) ranged from 0.43 for the F to 0.52 for the DP treatment. Cumulative infiltration for 3h ranged from 13 cm for R to 34cm for PN, with corresponding infiltration rates of 4 cm h−1 and 13 cm h−1, respectively. Regardless of the treatment, there were also temporal changes in soil properties. In comparison with 1988, measurements made in 1990 showed a significant decrease in WSA of 21.3 per cent, an increase in clay content of 2.8 per cent, and a decrease in SOC of 0.39 per cent. Runoff and soil losses were significantly correlated with the mean weight diameter (MWD), SOC, bulk density (pb) and available water capacity (AWC). Plant height measured 8 weeks after planting (WAP) for the R treatment was reduced by 33.3 per cent, 33.0 per cent and 29.0 per cent compared withh DP, PN and F, respectively. Nitrogen uptake by maize plants (Zea mays L.) 10 WAP for the R treatment was lower by 15 per cent, 8 per cent, and 6 per cent compared with the DP, PN and F treatments, respectively, while P uptake was lower by 33 per cent, 32 per cent and 29 per cent, respectively, compared with the same treatments. Grain yield was 9.78 Mg ha−1 for PN, 9.76 Mg ha−1 for DP, 8.64 Mg ha−1 for F and 6.60 Mg ha−1 for R during the 1990 crop season. Grain yield was reduced by about 32.4 per cent in the R treatment compared with the PN treatment, representing a maize grain yield reduction of 158 kg ha−1 for each centimeter of soil lost.  相似文献

Soil erosion in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in China is a major concern and the Central Government has initiated the Grain‐for‐Green Programme to convert farmland to forests and grassland to improve the environment. This paper analyses the relationship between land use and soil erosion in Zhongjiang, a typical agricultural county of Sichuan Province located in areas with severe soil erosion in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. In our analysis, we use the ArcGIS spatial analysis module with detailed land‐use data as well as data on slope conditions and soil erosion. Our research shows that the most serious soil erosion is occurring on agricultural land with a slope of 10∼25 degrees. Both farmland and permanent crops are affected by soil erosion, with almost the same percentage of soil erosion for corresponding slope conditions. Farmland with soil erosion accounts for 86·2 per cent of the total eroded agricultural land. In the farmland with soil erosion, 22·5 per cent have a slope of < 5 degrees, 20·3 per cent have a slope of 5∼10 degrees, and 57·1 per cent have a slope of > 10 degrees. On gentle slopes with less than 5 degrees inclination, some 6 per cent of the farmland had strong (5000∼8000 t km−2 y−1) or very strong (8000∼15000 t km−2 y−1) erosion. However, on steep slopes of more than 25 degrees, strong or very strong erosion was reported for more than 42 per cent of the farmland. These numbers explain why the task of soil and water conservation should be focused on the prevention of soil erosion on farmland with steep or very steep slopes. A Feasibility Index is developed and integrated socio‐economic assessment on the feasibility of improving sloping farmland in 56 townships and towns is carried out. Finally, to ensure the success of the Grain‐for‐Green Programme, countermeasures to improve sloping farmland and control soil erosion are proposed according to the values of the Feasibility Index in the townships and towns. These include: (1) to terrace sloping farmland on a large scale and to convert farmland with a slope of over 25 degrees to forests or grassland; (2) to develop ecological agriculture combined with improving the sloping farmland and constructing prime farmland and to pay more attention to improving the technology for irrigation and cultivation techniques; and (3) to carry out soil conservation on steep‐sloping farmland using suggested techniques. In addition, improving ecosystems and the inhabited environment through yard and garden construction for households is also an effective way to prevent soil erosion. The aim of this study was to measure the in situ soil CO2 flux from grassland, afforested land and reclaimed coalmine overburden dumps by using the automated soil CO2 flux system (LICOR‐8100® infrared gas analyzer, LICOR Inc., Lincoln, NE). The highest soil CO2 flux was observed in natural grassland (11·16 µmol CO2 m−2s−1), whereas the flux was reduced by 38 and 59 per cent in mowed site and at 15‐cm depth, respectively. The flux from afforested area was found 5·70 µmol CO2 m−2s−1, which is 50 per cent lower than natural grassland. In the reclaimed coalmine overburden dumps, the average flux under tree plantation was found to be lowest in winter and summer (0·89–1·12 µmol CO2 m−2s−1) and highest during late monsoon (3–3·5 µmol CO2 m−2s−1). During late monsoon, the moisture content was found to be higher (6–7·5 per cent), which leads to higher microbial activity and decomposition. In the same area under grass cover, soil CO2 flux was found to be higher (8·94 µmol CO2 m−2s−1) compared with tree plantation areas because of higher root respiration and microbial activity. The rate of CO2 flux was found to be determined predominantly by soil moisture and soil temperature. Our study indicates that the forest ecosystem plays a crucial role in combating global warming than grassland; however, to reduce CO2 flux from grassland, mowing is necessary. During the last few decades, land use changes have largely affected the global warming process through emissions of CO2. However, C sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems could contribute to the decrease of atmospheric CO2 rates. Although Mediterranean areas show a high potential for C sequestration, only a few studies have been carried out in these systems. In this study, we propose a methodology to assess the impact of land use and land cover change dynamics on soil organic C stocks at different depths. Soil C sequestration rates are provided for different land cover changes and soil types in Andalusia (southern Spain). Our research is based on the analysis of detailed soil databases containing data from 1357 soil profiles, the Soil Map of Andalusia and the Land Use and Land Cover Map of Andalusia. Land use and land cover changes between 1956 and 2007 implied soil organic C losses in all soil groups, resulting in a total loss of 16·8 Tg (approximately 0·33 Tg y−1). Afforestation increased soil organic C mostly in the topsoil, and forest contributed to sequestration of 8·62 Mg ha−1 of soil organic C (25·4 per cent). Deforestation processes implied important C losses, particularly in Cambisols, Luvisols and Vertisols. The information generated in this study will be a useful basis for designing management strategies for stabilizing the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations by preservation of C stocks and C sequestration. Needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from 25 and 40 sampling plots in southern and northern Finland, respectively, that had earlier been analysed for total sulphur concentration (St) were reanalysed for foliar sulphate sulphur (SO4–S) and total nitrogen (Nt). Organic sulphur content (So) was calculated as the difference between St and SO4–S. Current (c) and previous-year (c+1) needles were collected from southern Finland in December 1989 and c – c+2 needles from northern Finland in September-October 1990/September 1992. The results show that the St concentration and St/Nt ratio in Scots pine needles are good indices of dry deposition of SO2 in general, while SO4–S concentrations and SO4–S/So ratios can be used in areas with low N supply from the soil and/or low wet deposition of N. The normal St concentration in needles of Scots pines growing on a podzol with low N supply is considered to be 500–700 μg g-1 and that of SO4–S 100–200 μg g-1. An increase of 100 μg g-1 in needle St may be attributed to a rise of 1.4 μg m-3 in ambient SO2 concentration in areas with relatively low SO2 concentrations (>15 μg m-3). A critical level of 5 μg m-3 as an annual and growing season mean is proposed for forestry in northern Europe (north of 60°N).  相似文献

A loam from the Frilsham and one from the Wickham Series were incubated at 50 and 90 per cent of their water contents at saturation with 100 μg NH4NO3-Ng?1 soil in the presence and absence of C2H2 (0.5 per cent, v/v). Acetylene inhibited nitrification in both soils, but had no effect on mineralization of N. No denitrification (measured as the production of N2O in the presence of C2H2) occurred during incubation at 50 per cent saturation. At 90 per cent saturation, denitrification resulted in a loss of 28.4 and 36.7 μg Ng?1 after 48 h from the Frilsham and Wickham soils, respectively. The concurrent inhibition of nitrification had no effect on the extent of denitrification at this time. In the Wickham soil, NO3? was exhausted after 168 h incubation in the presence of C2H2 and denitrification was underestimated by 13 μg Ng?. The data suggested that concurrent inhibition of nitrification during measurement of denitrification using the C2H2 inhibition technique is most likely to affect the estimate of denitrification loss when NO3?supply is limited by the inhibition of nitrification.  相似文献

Soil samples were collected from Panchamarhi dry deciduous forest in Satpuda Biosphere Reserve, India to determine the effect of hill slopes and altitude on the population size of methanotrophic bacteria. Population size, in range of 4×105-3.6×107 g−1 dry soil, was negatively correlated with altitude and increased exponentially (r2=0.97, P<0.001) at steep slope (60°) while logarithmically (r2=0.97, P<0.001) at low slope (45°). Soil organic C, total N, and soil moisture increased while C/N ratio and temperature decreased down the hill slope. The results indicated that nutritional status of the soil across the slopes determines the methanotrophic bacterial population size.  相似文献

Metabolic quotients for CO2C (qCO2C) and microbial-C-loss (qD) were studied on soil microbial communities under long-term monoculture (M) or continuous crop rotations (CR). Under defined laboratory conditions the mean qCO2C (unit CO2C unit−1 Cmic h−1) of different microbial biomasses from 17 M systems amounted to 1.097 μg CO2qCO2CC as compared to 0.645 μg CO2C of microbial biomasses from 19 CR systems. The 1.7 times higher CO2C release per unit biomass and time of microbial biomasses from M systems was significantly different at the P =0.001 level. In addition, microbial C-loss in samples from M or CR plots was followed for 5 weeks. Again, mean qD per unit microbial biomass and time was 1.6 times higher (P = 0.01) for microbial biomasses from M systems (0.301 μg C, 14 soils) when compared with CR systems (0.188μg C, 14 soils). These differences were not related to soil texture, Corg or pH of these soils. The effects of environmental influences (soil management) on the microbial pool in terms of a changing energy demand are discussed.  相似文献

Very little is known about the effect of overgrazing on carbon loss from soil in semi-arid savannas and woodlands of South America. Soil carbon parameters were measured in a 10,000 ha restoration project in the western Chaco of Argentina (24°43′S and 63°17′W). Three situations were compared: highly restored (HRS), moderately restored (MRS) and highly degraded (HDS). Soil and litter samples were recovered in the dry and wet seasons. SOC and CO2–C values decreased from the HRS (7.0 kg m−2 and 130 g m−2) to the HDS (1.5 kg m−2 and 46 g m−2) whereas the C mineralization rate increased toward the less restored sites (0.96–2.29). Surface-litter C was similar in both sites under restoration (260 and 229 g m−2), being non-existent at the HDS. Leaves from woody species dominated surface-litter in the HRS, whereas grass material was predominant in the MRS. During the wet season, the SOC decreased, whereas both CO2–C and C mineralization rate increased. The magnitude of the between-season differences was highest at the HDS (62% in SOC, 55% in CO2, and 80% in C mineralization rate). We estimated that C loss since introduction of cattle into the forest was 58 Mg ha−1, reaching a total of 2×1015 g at for the entire Chaco. These values are higher than those caused by the conversion of savannas and other ecosystems into agriculture or cultivated pastures. The amount of C fixed in the highly restored site (275 g ha−1 per year) indicates that the Chaco soils have a significant potential as atmospheric carbon sinks.  相似文献

Sodium chloride, at rates up to 100 mg g?1, was added to a Sassafras sandy loam amended with finely-ground alfalfa to determine the effect of NaCl on CO2 evolution, ammonification, and nitrification in a 14-week study. A NaCl concentration of 0.25 mg g?1 significantly reduced CO2 evolution by 16% in unamended soil and 5% in alfalfa-amended soil. Increasing NaCl progressively reduced CO2 evolution, with no CO2 evolved from the soil receiving 100 mg NaCl g?1. A 0.50 mg NaCl g?1 rate was required before a significant reduction in decomposition of the alfalfa occurred. The NO?2-N + NO?3-N content of the soil was significantly reduced from 40 to 37 μg g?1 at 0 and 0.25 mg NaCl g?1, respectively in the unamended soil. In the alfalfa amended soil, nitrification was significantly reduced at 5 mg NaCl g?1. At 10 mg NaCl g?1, nitrification was completely inhibited, there being only 6 and 2 μg NO?2-N + NO?3-N g?1 in the alfalfa amended and unamended soil, respectively. In the alfalfa amended soil NH+4-N accumulated from 6 μg g?1 at the 0 NaCl rate to a maximum of 54 μg g?1 with 25 mg NaCl g?1. These higher NH+4-N values resulted in a 0.5 unit increase in the pHw over that of the 0 NaCl rate in the alfalfa amended soil. At NaCl concentrations above 25 mg g?1 there was a reduction in NH+4-N. The addition of alfalfa to the soil helped to alleviate the adverse affects of NaCl on CO2 evolution and nitrification.  相似文献

Interactions between microbial communities and organic matter were analyzed for soils from the project regions ’︁Ecosystem Research in the Agricultural Landscape/FAM, Munich’ in southern Germany and ’︁Ecosystem Research in the Bornhöved Lake district’ from northern Germany using ratios between microbial biomass content (Cmic), microbial metabolic quotient (qCO2) and organic carbon content (Corg). In the agricultural soils in southern Germany, the qCO2/Corg ratio differed significantly with respect to agricultural management in contrast to ecophysiological Cmic/Corg ratio. In addition, Cmic/Corg ratio decreased from 39 to 21 mg Cmic g—1 Corg and qCO2/Corg ratio increased from 72 to 180 mg CO2‐C g—1 Cmic h—1 (g Corg g—1 soil)—1 with increasing soil depth. For the upper soil horizons from the landscape in northern Germany the two quotients differed significantly with reference to land use showing highest microbial colonization under grassland and lowest under beech forest. In contrast, C use efficiency was lowest in arable field under maize monoculture and highest in a wet grassland having a high organic C content.  相似文献

The clay fraction of soils from south-western Australia is dominated by kaolinite. These soil kaolinites give broad basal reflections (median value for WHH 001 =0.41° 2θ) and have poorly ordered structures. The median value of the Hughes & Brown crystallinity index for 35 soil kaolinites is 5.4 compared to 42.0 for mineral standard kaolinites. The median values for surface area and cation exchange capacity of soil kaolinites are 35 m2 g−1 and 56.7 mmolc kg−1, respectively, compared to 10 m2 g−1 and 4.8 mmolc kg- l for standard kaolinites. The dehydroxylation temperature of soil kaolinites is about 50 K lower than for standard kaolinites and decreases with increasing Fe content. Soil kaolinite crystals are much smaller (c. 0.10 pm) and are irregular subrounded to rounded plates in comparison to the larger (c. 0.28 pm), perfectly hexagonal euhedral plates of Georgia kaolinite. Analytical electron microscopy of single soil kaolinite crystals indicates that the Fe content varies with an average value of c. 2.5% Fe,2O3. X-ray diffraction line broadening data indicate that crystal size decreases as the Fe content increases. Crystal order also decreases with increasing Fe content. The P sorption maximum of soil kaolinite ranges from 486–654 μg P g−l and is thus about six times larger than for the clay fraction of Georgia kaolinite.  相似文献

Abstract

Using an Ochrept soil of a forest at climax stage or of an arable site at Kita‐Ibaraki, a city in central Japan, the rates of carbon dioxide (CO2)‐carbon (C) evolution, the amounts of microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and the amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in a laboratory with special reference to the incubation temperature and the soil water content. The rates of CO2‐C evolution increased exponentially with increase in the incubation temperature in the range of 4–40°C. The temperature coefficients (Q10) were 2.0 for the forest and 1.9 for the arable soil. The amounts of MBC were almost constant of 980 μg g‐1 soil in the incubation temperature up to 25°C for the forest, and 340 μg g‐1 soil in the incubation temperature up to 31 °C for the arable soil. The amounts of DOC in soil solutions were almost constant at 3.1 μg g‐1 soil in the incubation temperature up to 25°C for the forest, and 3.8 μg g‐1 soil in the incubation temperature up to 31°C for the arable soil. The rates of CO2‐C evolution and the amounts of DOC increased with increase in soil water content (% of soil dry weight) up to 91% for the forest or up to 26% for the arable soil. However, the rates of CO2‐C evolution and the amounts of DOC were almost constant within soil water content in the range of 91–160% or 26–53%, respectively. The amounts of MBC of the forest or arable soil were almost constant over a wide range of soil water content in the range of 41–220% or 8–73%, respectively. The rates of CO2‐C evolution of both the forest and the arable soils were highly correlated with the amounts of DOC, but not with the amounts of MBC, under laboratory conditions in the case that the amounts of DOC were changed by various treatments. Equations used to calculate erodibility in the Water Erosion Prediction Project soil erosion model (WEPP) are based on erodibility studies in the USA and may not function well in another region. This study was conducted to: (i) analyze erodibility and infiltration characteristics of some predominant soils of southern Spain, and (ii) test equations used to calculate interrill erodibility in the WEPP model on these soils. The five soils chosen for this study in Andalusia, southwest Spain, were: two terrace soils (referred to as ‘Red and Yellow Alfisols’), an alluvial soil (‘Fluvent’), a shallow hillside soil (‘Inceptisol’), and a cracking clay soil (‘Vertisol’). A static, solenoid operated rainfall simulator was operated at an intensity of approximately 60 mm h−1 during a 60-min dry run followed by a 30-min wet run the next day on 0.75 m2 plots with 30% ridge slopes. Infiltration rates were high (always exceeding 50% except for the wet run of the Fluvent). The Fluvent had the lowest infiltration rate (0.00 mm min−1 at the end of the wet run) and highest soil loss (985 g m−2 h−1 in the dry run and 1557 g m−2 h−1 in the wet run). The Vertisol, Inceptisol and Red Alfisol had low soil loss (415, 605, and 527 g m−2 h−1 in the dry run and 824, 762 and 629 g m−2 h−1 in the wet run, respectively). Soil loss of the Vertisol doubled between dry and wet run and infiltration rate did not stabilize, suggesting that erodibility of Vertisols increases when they are wet. The Yellow Alfisol had lower final infiltration rate in the dry run (0.33 mm min−1) than in the wet run (0.58 mm min−1) and higher soil loss in dry run (1203 g m−2 h−1) than in wet run (961 g m−2 h−1), the reason still being unclear. Soil loss was significantly correlated to silt+very fine sand content (r=0.96), indicating that erodibility of these soils is determined by similar properties as soils in these soil orders in the USA. However, the equation for WEPP-interrill erodibility overestimated erodibility significantly (two to four times), indicating the need to develop new erodibility equations for the Mediterranean region. Infiltration rates were generally high and soil loss rates low compared to reports from the USA, suggesting that limited runoff generation is a primary reason for low erodibility of these soils.  相似文献

The response of microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), nitrogen (Nmic), basal respiration, and the metabolic quotient to 3 years of a natural succession fallow were studied in a field experiment on sandy soil in Northeast Saxony/Germany from 1996 to 1998. Soil samples were taken from Eutric Cambisol and Mollic Cambisol every six weeks during the vegetation period at soil depths of 0—10 and 10—30 cm. The Cmic content in the topsoils increased with time of succession in both soil types. This trend was more distinct in the Mollic Cambisol (70.7 μg g—1 in June 1996 to 270.9 μg g—1 in October 1998 at 0—10 cm) than in the Eutric Cambisol (69.7 μg g—1 in June 1996 to 175.0 μg g—1 in October 1998 at 0—10 cm). By contrast, the Nmic content slightly decreased in the Eutric Cambisol from 18.9 μg g—1 to 17.7 μg g—1 during the same time period. In the Mollic Cambisol, the Nmic increased from 18.8 μg g—1 in spring 1996 to 35.5 μg g—1 in fall 1998, however to a lower extent than the Cmic. Subsequently, the (C:N)mic ratio increased from 4.3 to 5.8 at soil depth of 0—10 cm and from 3.5 to 6.5 at 10—30 cm during the 3‐year‐study at the Eutric Cambisol. In the Mollic Cambisol, the enhancement of (C:N)mic ratio was more pronounced (i.e. from 4.3 to 6.7 at 0—10 cm and from 3.5 to 7.2 at 10—30 cm). Most likely this results from a shift in microbial populations towards a dominance of soil fungi. The already low basal respiration of, on average, 0.26 mg CO2 g—1 (24h)—1 (0—10 cm) in June 1996 decreased with time of succession fallow to 0.15 and 0.22 mg CO2 g—1 (24h)—1 in October 1998 in the Eutric and the Mollic Cambisol, respectively. Thus, the metabolic quotient as an indicator for the efficiency of organic matter turnover in soil was very low in both soils. During the summer months, the metabolic quotients reached minimum levels of ≤ 0.1 μg CO2 C (g Cmic)—1 h—1, probably because of low soil moisture contents. Correlation analyses revealed close relationships between Nmic and total N, Nmic and water content, and Nmic and pH values. These relationships became even more pronounced with the time period of natural succession. For the samples from fall 1998, highly significant correlations were determined between Nmic and total N (coefficients were rs = 0.91***), Nmic and water content (rs = 0.91***), and Nmic and pH value (rs = 0.76***). The values for all biological parameters studied were larger in the Mollic than in the Eutric Cambisol. This indicates higher turnover rates of different C and N fractions in the Mollic Cambisol. In general, set aside of formerly agricultural managed sandy soils resulted in greater Cmic : Nmic ratios and thus, in a change in the microbiological community structure as well as in reduced C and N turnover rates (i.e. low metabolic quotient) under the climatic conditions of the East German lowlands.  相似文献

Biologically active fractions of soil organic matter are important in understanding decomposition potential of organic materials, nutrient cycling dynamics, and biophysical manipulation of soil structure. We evaluated the quantitative relationships among potential C and net N mineralization, soil microbial biomass C (SMBC), and soil organic C (SOC) under four contrasting climatic conditions. Mean SOC values were 28±11 mg g−1 (n=24) in a frigid–dry region (Alberta/British Columbia), 25±5 mg g−1 (n=12) in a frigid–wet region (Maine), 11±4 mg g−1 (n=117) in a thermic–dry region (Texas), and 12±5 mg g−1 (n=131) in a thermic–wet region (Georgia). Higher mean annual temperature resulted in consistently greater basal soil respiration (1.7 vs 0.8 mg CO2–C g−1 SOC d−1 in the thermic compared with the frigid regions, P<0.001), greater net N mineralization (2.8 vs 1.3 mg inorganic N g−1 SOC 24 d−1, P<0.001), and greater SMBC (53 vs 21 mg SMBC g−1 SOC, P<0.001). Specific respiratory activity of SMBC was, however, consistently lower in the thermic than in the frigid regions (29 vs 34 mg CO2–C g−1 SMBC d−1, P<0.01). Higher mean annual precipitation resulted in consistently lower basal soil respiration (1.1 vs 1.3 mg CO2–C g−1 SOC d−1 in the wet compared with the dry regions, P<0.01) and lower SMBC (31 vs 43 mg SMBC g−1 SOC, P<0.001), but had inconsistent effects on net N mineralization that depended upon temperature regime. Specific respiratory activity of SMBC was consistently greater in the wet than the dry regions (≈33 vs 29 mg CO2–C g−1 SMBC d−1, P<0.01). Although the thermic regions were not able to retain as high a level of SOC as the frigid regions, due likely to high annual decomposition rates, biologically active soil fractions were as high per mass of soil and even 2–3-times greater per unit of SOC in the thermic compared with the frigid regions. These results suggest that macroclimate has a large impact on the portion of soil organic matter that is potentially active, but a relatively small impact on the specific respiratory activity of SMBC.  相似文献

The effect of 50, 100, 150, and 400 μg sodium pentachlorophenate (Na-PCP) per gram soil was studied in nonsterile soil incubated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and in sterilized soil inoculated withAzotobacter sp. isolated from the soil. N2 fixation was determined by acetylene reduction. Pentachlorophenate at a concentration of 50 μg g?1 had an inhibitory effect in nonsterile soil incubated aerobically while strong inhibition of dinitrogen fixation in nonsterile soil occurred in the presence of 100 μg g?1 and above. The EC50 values for the inhibition of nitrogenase activity in nonsterile soil incubated aerobically and anaerobically and in sterilized soil inoculated withAzotobacter sp. suspensions were 49.8±1.4 μg Na-PCP g?1, 186.8±2.8 μg Na-PCP g?1, and 660.8±29.3 μg Na-PCP g?1, respectively.  相似文献
