The objective of this study was to identify the causative agents of hepatitis observed in broiler chickens at processing. Livers of chickens from 16 broiler farms in Saskatchewan with gross lesions of hepatitis were collected at processing. In addition to routine bacterial isolation and histopathological examination, serologic studies for infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and Chicken anaemia virus (CAV), calculation of the ratio of the weight of the bursa of Fabricius (BF) to body weight (BBW), and histopathological examination of the BF were done. Of the 264 livers with gross lesions, 83% had multifocal to coalescing necrotizing hepatitis, 16% had perihepatitis, and 1% had hemorrhages. No definitive causative microorganisms were isolated from the hepatic lesions; however, no significant bacterial isolations were made. Bursal atrophy, low BBW ratio, and high titer of antibody against IBDV each correlated with the rate of total condemnations (P = 0.0188, P = 0.0001, and P = 0.0073, respectively). Nucleotide sequencing of IBDV isolated from the BF identified the variant strains Delaware-E and 586. Condemnation because of hepatic lesions was correlated with titer of antibody against IBDV and BBW (P = 0.016 and P = 0.027). The results of this study demonstrate that hepatic lesions in Saskatchewan chickens are not currently caused by a primary bacterial pathogen but are associated with indicators of immunosuppression that is likely due to variant IBDV.  相似文献

Non-perforating abomasal lesions are a considerable problem affecting more than half the population of veal calves. The objective of the present study was to assess the prevalence of pyloric and fundic abomasal lesions in Swiss veal calves at slaughter and to compare the occurrence of non-perforating abomasal lesions between two different production programs (‘Naturafarm’ and ‘conventional’). ‘Conventional’-production settings met the minimal standards as defined by the Swiss animal welfare legislation, whereas ‘Naturafarm’ production complied with increased animal welfare requirements. In order to identify risk factors for the development of abomasal lesions, information on management, housing, and feeding was obtained by a questionnaire. A total of 125 abomasa were randomly selected in one large abattoir. They were examined macroscopically, and the occurence of lesions in either the fundic or pyloric region of the abomasum was recorded separately. Animals raised in the ‘conventional-production setting revealed a significantly higher prevalence of lesions in the fundic part. Factors significantly affecting the prevalence of non-perforating lesions in the fundic part were the ‘conventional’-production environment, including missing access to an outside pen, missing access to water and straw as the only roughage, feeding by bucket and the liquid milk by-product Protofit in combination with the powder Sprayfit.  相似文献

Background

Piglets are born with eight sharp teeth that during nursing can cause facial lesions on littermates and teat lesions on the sow. Teeth grinding in piglets is therefore often practiced to reduce these lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the consequences of grinding piglet teeth in regard to the occurrence of lesions. In this study the piglets'' teeth were grinded in 28 litters, and in 36 litters the piglets'' teeth were kept intact. Twice, one time during the first week and one time during the second week after birth facial lesions of the piglets were scored and the teats of the sows were examined for lesions. The facial lesion score accounted for the amount and severity of lesions. The individual observations on piglets in the litter were synthesized in a litter facial lesion score.

Findings

69.8% and 43.5% of the piglets had facial lesions in week 1 and week 2 respectively. The effect of treatment was not significant on litter facial lesion score. The litter facial lesion score was higher in week 1 than in week 2 (p < 0.001) and higher in large litters (p = 0.003) than in small litters. Mortality between week 1 and week 2 was higher in litters with intact teeth (p = 0.02). Sow teat lesions only occurred if litters had intact teeth.

Conclusions

According to our results teeth grinding is only justifiable in large litters.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and characteristics of Johne’s disease (JD) lesions in Ugandan cattle slaughtered at two of the main abattoirs in Kampala. Ileocaecal junction and the associated lymph nodes of 1,022 cattle were examined for gross and microscopic lesions, followed by Ziehl Neelsen staining of the tissues bearing lesions. Confirmation of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis infection was done in some of the tissues using culture and IS900 PCR. The lesions were then described, characterised and tabulated. Characteristic Johne’s disease granulomas were found in 4.7% of the samples examined, derived from Zebu, Ankole longhorn, Friesian breeds of cattle and their crosses. Lesions were found both in the lymph nodes and ileocaecal junction mucosa. The lesions tended to be more severe in the lymph node than in the mucosa. There were also some unique and atypical lesions found in association with Johne’s disease granulomas. The diagnostic values of various gross lesions and criteria of lesion classifications and diagnosis are revisited and discussed based on the findings of this study. The prevalence of Johne’s disease lesions among slaughtered cattle in Kampala’s two abattoirs indicates that the disease is well established in the cattle population in the country. The diverse manifestations in lesions of JD need to be considered when making histological diagnosis in tissues where the disease is suspected.  相似文献

Internal derangements in the human knee joint caused by meniscal lesions affecting joint function are known to have influence on local radionuclide uptake (Nicholas & Holder 1980, Mooar et al. 1987). To elucidate the joint reaction to minor meniscal lesions, not interfering with knee joint function, a model involving the avascular central part of the medial meniscus was used. Lesions in this area are known not to heal spontaneously (Heatley 1980, Veth et al. 1983).  相似文献

Animals infected with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) show a variety of lesions, from focal forms, seen in subclinical stages to diffuse lesions in clinical cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the local expression of IFN-γ by immunohistochemistry in relation with the type of lesion in naturally Map-infected cows. The number of immunolabelled cells, −the majority morphologically consistent with lymphocytes-, was higher in focal and diffuse paucibacillary forms than in diffuse multibacillary lesions, where they appeared closely related to epithelioid cells. Diffuse multibacillary lesions had the lowest numbers, but higher than controls, and positive cells were intermingled among the macrophages. The peripheral IFN-γ production was higher in all Map infected cows and a positive correlation was found with the number of immunolabelled cells in the intestine. The findings of this study show that IFN-γ would play a role in the development of the different types of lesions in paratuberculosis, and also points out the importance of adequate sampling of lymphoid tissue containing samples when studying the local immune response in which IFN-γ expression may be involved, especially in cases where focal lesions are present.  相似文献

In a survey of 2500 market weight pigs in a Saskatchewan abattoir, 37% were infected with adult Ascaris suum and in 46% there were milkspot hepatic lesions. A total of 60% of the pigs examined had some evidence of A. suum infection. Most infected pigs contained less than 50 adult ascarids.

In a second abattoir survey of a further 2500 market weight pigs, 44% of the animals had milk-spot hepatic lesions. In approximately 12% of the affected pigs these lesions were very severe and a very similar proportion of pigs' livers were condemned or sent for use as animal feed.

The results of these surveys are discussed with particular reference to the significance of A. suum infection in growing pigs in Saskatchewan.

Bacterial infections of the jaws are a common cause of death in macropods. Lesions and oral cavities from 50 affected animals yielded wide ranges of aerobic and anaerobic organisms. The most frequent isolate from lesions (81%) was Fusobacterium necrophorum, generally combined with other bacteria, but in 5 lesions, in pure culture. It was also isolated from 61% of mouths and this was the chief difference between the oral flora of affected and normal macropods. Other groups of organisms isolated from over 50% of lesions were: Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic rods, streptococci, and anaerobic Gram-positive cocci. Actinomycetes were isolated from 29% of lesions and from one lesion in pure culture. Differences in the flora were detected between lesions in bone and soft tissue and between closed and open lesions. Antibiotics were given to 22 animals, but without significant differences in frequencies of isolation of organisms between treated and untreated groups, and with no permanent elimination of infection. It was concluded that, while different organisms might be present in the complex of “jaw disease”, the pathogenic agent in the majority of cases was F. necrophorum. Actinomycetes were capable of producing lesions in bone, but their role in “jaw disease” remains undefined.  相似文献

This study describes the macroscopic and microscopic lesions in farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) naturally infected with genetically identified Aeromonas salmonicida, A. hydrophila, and A. veronii species. The genus Aeromonas includes bacteria that naturally inhabit both waterways and organisms. At least 27 Aeromonas species have been identified to date, some of which can cause significant economic losses in aquaculture. As up to 68.8% of Aeromonas isolates may be misidentified in routine biochemical and phenotypic tests, however, reported cases of Aeromonas infection in fish may be wrongly identified. Our findings confirmed that the 3 Aeromonas species studied are associated with septicemia and dermal lesions in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Animal tuberculosis (aTB) is a zoonotic disease characterized by granulomatous lesions on affected tissues, occurring as a consequence of immunological response to infection. Mycobacterium bovis, the main causative agent of aTB, was investigated in Brazilian wild boars with 37.7 % (29/77) positivity. Among these animals, most had no macroscopic tuberculosis-like lesions (89.6 %; 26/29). The existence of co-infections, which may alter an individual's immune response to an immunological challenge, could influence the formation of tuberculosis lesions. Therefore, we investigated Metastrongylus sp. and aTB co-infection to seek an explanation for the absence of macroscopic lesions in aTB. Of the tested animals, 77.9 % (60/77) had Metastrongylus sp., however, there was no association between its occurrence and the pattern of aTB lesions. The absence of tuberculous lesions in infected animals is worrisome, especially to hunters who handle their carcasses, potentially assuming that the animal is healthy. Studies evaluating other possibilities that can explain the absence of lesions in infected animals should be carried out to better understand these findings.  相似文献

Conventionally-delivered colostrum-deprived lambs were inoculated with either parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3) alone or PI3 followed, 6 days later, by Pasteurella haemolytica (P.h.). Six out of 20 lambs died or were killed in extremis within 3 days of the inoculation of P.h.; the remainder were selected at random and killed from 1 to 28 days after the inoculation of P.h.Extensive pneumonic lesions developed in a large proportion of lambs inoculated with both agents but in none of those inoculated with the virus alone. Histologically, the pneumonic lesions fell into two categories: necrotic lesions, demarcated by a zone of either oat-cell or neutrophil infiltration, and a milder, purulent bronchopneumonia. Bacterial numbers tended to be higher in necrotic lesions than they were in purulent lesions. Virus titres in nasal secretions, on the day of inoculation of P.h. (day 6), also were higher in animals that developed necrotic lesions than they were in those that developed milder lesions. Nevertheless, titres were similar in both groups on day 4.Necrotic lesions persisted for at least 21 days as residual encapsulated abscesses which still contained viable P.h. whereas the milder, purulent bronchopneumonia was not detected later than 3 days after the inoculation of P.h..  相似文献

Amoebic gill disease (AGD) is characterised by the association of Neoparamoeba sp. with hyperplastic gill tissue of affected fishes, however, the identity and role of host cells associated with AGD lesions are not known. Here, we investigated cells with an immunological role that were associated with AGD lesions by locating cellular MHC class II β chain. A tank housing Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was inoculated with Neoparamoeba sp., and MHC class II β chain expression in the gills was qualitatively assessed by immunohistochemistry. In AGD-naïve control fish, MHC class II+ cells were detected basolateral to the interlamellar epithelium as well as upon the interlamellar and secondary epithelium. In the gills of AGD affected fish MHC class II+ cells were observed in both affected and unaffected tissue. Within AGD lesions, numerous MHC class II+ cells were present and these cells exhibited variable levels of expression suggesting that like mammals, MHC class II expression is highly regulated. The presence of MHC class II+ cells within gill lesions is indicative of immune cell trafficking and these cells could contribute in an antigen presentation capacity to the development of an antibody response in fish chronically affected by AGD.  相似文献

An outbreak of foot lameness in a dairy herd of 170 goats is described. The herd, that was kept mostly indoors, was attended between December 2006 and November 2007. During this period, 15% of the goats showed lameness with foot lesions and 24% of the goats showed lameness without foot lesions. The foot lesions consisted of cracks and erosions on the horn of the bulbs of the heel that in most cases extended along the internal side of the axial hoof wall. The clinical diagnosis was interdigital dermatitis. Annual milk production was lower in lame goats compared to those that were not lame (P < 0.05). Furthermore, annual milk yield was significantly affected by the type of foot disease present and was significantly lower in cases with foot lesions than in the animals that were not lame (P < 0.05) and also in the lame goats without foot lesions (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Mycotic lymphadenitis in cattle and Swine   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Lymph nodes with granulomatous mycotic lesions from 100 cattle and 9 pigs were examined. More than 90% of cases of mycotic lymphadenitis in cattle occurred in the mesenteric nodes, whereas in swine lesions occurred at multiple sites. All observed mycotic infections were caused by zygomycetes. Histologically the granulomas were characterized by necrosis, mineralization, and fibrosis with infiltration of eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and giant cells. Mucoraceous-type hyphae were identified in most of the lesions, and Absidia corymbifera, Rhizopus rhizopodiformis, and R. oryzae were isolated. Within the lesions, chlamydospores were produced by R. rhizopodiformis. Mycelia in a few lesions were suggestive of infections with fungi of the Mortierellaceae and Entomophthoraceae.  相似文献

An investigation of leg abnormalities, including dyschondroplasia, was conducted in 45-day-old male elite breeders. The birds were reared by a broiler breeder company under standard commercial broiler conditions and at 45 days of age a random selection of male progeny from 10 sires were examined clinically, according to a commercial procedure, before being killed by cervical dislocation. Detailed post-mortem examination of the legs included inspection of the growth plates and scoring of lesions of dyschondroplasia. Differences in the prevalence of dyschrondroplasia were recorded between sires, dams within sires and sires of dams. A total of 557 birds were examined, representing at least 50 birds per sire.Lesions of dyschondroplasia were detected in 26.9% of the birds, the site of highest prevalence being the proximal tibiotarsus. There was a highly significant difference in prevalence between sire families (P < 0.001) and between the dam progeny in two sire families (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). There was no significant difference in the mean conformation score of birds with and without dyschondroplasia or between birds with lesions up to or above 10 mm in length. The mean live weight of birds with dyschondroplasia was significantly less than that of birds without the lesion (P < 0.02). The commercial selection procedure against leg weakness was shown to be effective in detecting 68.5% of birds with dyschondroplasia, 73.7% of those with both dyschondroplasia and bowing of the proximal tibiotarsus and 84.4% of those with necrotic lesions of dyschondroplasia.A simple dissection method for assessing lesions of dyschondroplasia and some other aids to its detection are described. The observed association between various forms of leg abnormalities are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Disorders of the horizontal ramus (body) of the equine mandible are well reported, but there is minimal documentation of disorders of the angle of mandible. A retrospective examination of the records of Edinburgh University Equine Hospital (1997–2011) showed that 32 horses were referred due to swellings of the angle of the mandible. The aetiology of these swellings was identified in just 13/32 cases (41%) including fractures (n = 2), traumatic, localised periosteal/cortical lesions (n = 4), traumatic soft tissue lesions (n = 2), neoplasia (n = 3), and inflammation of the adjacent salivary gland (n = 1) and masseter muscle (n = 1).The remaining 19 (59%) cases without a definitive diagnosis showed two patterns of lesions. Twelve cases had localised periosteal/cortical lesions of the ventral aspect of the angle of mandible that were most likely traumatic in origin. The remaining seven undiagnosed cases without mandibular bony changes all had sinus tracts/chronic soft tissue infections on the medial aspect of the angle of the mandible which were believed to be caused by a draining retro-pharyngeal lesion in five cases. Surgical excision of abnormal soft tissues (if present) and bone curettage was the most successful treatment. It was concluded that the aetiology of swellings of the angle of the equine mandible are often obscure; most appear to be traumatic in origin, yet horses seldom develop gross fractures at this site due to the support of the dense surrounding musculo-tendinous structures. A smaller proportion are caused by draining retropharyngeal lesions that respond poorly to medical therapy, but respond well to surgical treatment.  相似文献

BackgroundHepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary hepatic malignancy in humans and dogs. Several differentially expressed molecules have been studied and reported in human hepatocellular carcinoma and non-neoplastic liver lesions. However, studies on the features of canine hepatocellular carcinoma are limited, especially related to the differential characteristics of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions.ObjectivesThe study''s objective was 1) to examine and evaluate the expression of arginase-1, P-glycoprotein, and cytokeratin 19 in canine liver tissues and 2) to investigate the differential features of hepatocellular carcinomas, liver tissue with non-neoplastic lesions, and paracancerous liver tissues in dogs.MethodsThe expression levels of three markers underwent immunohistochemical analysis in 40 non-neoplastic liver tissues, 32 hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, and 11 paracancerous liver tissues. Scoring of each marker was performed semi-quantitatively.ResultsArginase-1 and P-glycoprotein were significantly downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma, compared with hepatic tissues with non-neoplastic diseases (p < 0.001). Expression levels of arginase-1 and P-glycoprotein were also significantly lower in hepatocellular carcinoma than in paracancerous liver tissues (arginase-1, p = 0.0195; P-glycoprotein, p = 0.047). Few cytokeratin 19-positive hepatocytes were detected and only in one hepatocellular carcinoma and one cirrhotic liver sample.ConclusionsThe results of this study suggest that downregulation of arginase-1 and P-glycoprotein is a feature of canine hepatocellular carcinoma; thus, those markers are potential candidates for use in differentiating hepatocellular carcinomas from non-neoplastic liver lesions in dogs.  相似文献

Fifty-two joints from pigs with nonsuppurative joint disease from a local abattoir were examined grossly, histologically, and microbiologically in order to establish macroscopic differences between degenerative arthropathy and arthritis due to an infectious organism. The joints were grouped grossly according to the type and severity of lesions of the synovial membrane and cartilage, and microscopically according to the severity of synovial membrane lesions. Osteochondrosis and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae were the most common causes of nonsuppurative joint disease in the joints examined. The major macroscopic differences between these two arthropathies were in the nature and severity of the synovial and cartilaginous lesions and involvement of the lymph node draining the diseased joint. Typically, in osteochondrosis, the changes are feathery hypertrophy of villi, focal full-thickness cartilage buckles, ulcers or flaps, and no change in the draining lymph node, whereas in Erysipelothrix- caused arthritis, the villous hypertrophy is severe and polypoid in nature, there is diffuse erosion of articular cartilage, and the draining lymph node is consistently hypertrophic and often cystic.  相似文献

The frequency of enterotoxigenic coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci in nose and throat and in hand lesions was investigated in 86 meat cutters and dressers. Enterotoxin-producing staphylococci were demonstrated in nasal swabs from 22% of clinically well workers and from 42% of a group with mild coryza. The corresponding rates in throat swabs were 6 and 12%. Four of 16 superficial lesions of the hand harbored enterotoxigenic staphylococci. The implications for contamination of food and outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning are discussed.  相似文献
