1. Embryonic growth and development were analysed using meat type lines of Japanese quail, HG and LG, divergently selected for shape of the growth curve. A total of 1020 embryos of generations 9, 10 or 13 were used for analysis. 2. Considerable inter-line differences were observed in the rate of embryonic development. When compared to HG, LG embryos appeared to be developmentally accelerated during the first 42 h of incubation (larger blastoderm diameter, more somites and higher frequency of more advanced Hamburger-Hamilton stages) as well as at the end of the prenatal period (more embryos with the yolk sac inside the body cavity, shorter incubation period). This corresponded with the trend in postnatal development. 3. Embryonic growth of both lines exhibited an exponential trend. However, considerable inter-line differences were noted in the rate of embryonic growth. Initial growth retardation compensated subsequently by a higher growth rate of HG vs LG quail, characterised the lines after hatching. The same growth pattern repeated three times during the prenatal period (between d 0 and 3, 3 and 8, and 8 and 16). 4. The repeated occurrence of transient decreases in growth rate of the developmentally delayed HG line could be associated with a delayed onset of genetically determined physiological functions mediating utilisation of nutrient supply. 5. Hence, different shapes of growth curves in two genotypes with similar growth potential reveal inter-line differences in physiological age persisting during the whole ontogenesis.  相似文献

1. Changes in the relative weights of carcase, abdominal fat, breast and leg muscles, and plasma thyroid hormone concentrations occurring during the first 6 weeks of postnatal growth were analysed in males of HG and LG lines divergently selected for high and low relative body weight (BW) gain between 11 and 28 d of age, respectively, and constant adult BW. 2. The second week of postnatal life was a critical age at which the HG males exhibited a relatively faster growth in comparison to their LG counterparts and permanently exceeded LG males in the percentage by weight of carcase, breast and leg muscle. A higher production of muscle tissues was associated with lower accumulation of abdominal fat before sexual maturity. 3. In general, the plasma T(3) level of HG quail exceeded that of LG quail. Nevertheless, significant differences were found only at 14, 21 and 28 d of age, that is, in the period during which the highest inter-line differences in relative growth rate were noted. Also the T(3)/T(4) ratio followed a similar trend while plasma T(4) level showed no clear and consistent inter-line differences. 4. The results suggest that the selection for the shape of the growth curve, like the selection for body fat, modifies the carcase quality owing to shortening/prolongation of the acceleration growth phase. Individuals with a short acceleration phase of the growth curve are characterised by low carcase quality during the fattening period.  相似文献

1. Changes in embryonic development and growth were analysed in relation to direct changes in postnatal growth and correlated responses in egg parameters using Japanese quail lines selected for more than 30 generations for high (HG) and low (LG) relative gain of body weight (BW) between 11 and 28 d of age, and constant BW at 49 d of age.

2. During the first 42 h as well as at the end of incubation, LG embryos were developmentally accelerated in comparison with their HG counterparts. An expected increase of line divergence across generations was observed only in traits analysed at the end of incubation.

3. In contrast to early generations, LG embryos continuously exhibited a higher BW than HG embryos and this difference temporarily disappeared only around incubation d 8. Analogous to early generations, the HG compared with LG embryos showed two periods of transient growth retardation compensated subsequently by a higher growth rate (incubation d 3–8 and 8–16).

4. More pronounced growth retardation of HG versus LG embryos in late versus early generations corresponded to more distinct decrease of HG versus LG growth rate during the first post-hatch days. Likewise, a disappearance of line BW differences on incubation d 8 characterising the late generations corresponded to the elimination of line differences in adult BW.

5. Alterations of growth pattern were associated with changes of egg size. While HG quail maintained a relatively constant adult BW and egg size across generations, the gradually increasing incidence of large eggs in the LG line allowed selection of birds with higher growth potential, which in turn amplified the line differences in the embryonic BW and eliminated the line differences in adult BW. Line differences in egg composition (larger albumen with lower density in LG compared with HG eggs) apparently contributed to the strengthening of line developmental divergence during incubation.

6. Transient lack of nutrient supply to HG embryos due to their developmental delay is probably responsible for a higher HG versus LG embryo mortality.  相似文献

1. Hatching time, hatchability of fertile eggs and embryo mortality under standard egg storage (1 or 5 days at 12?±?1°C and 55% relative humidity) and incubation conditions (37·5?±?0·2°C and 50% relative humidity) were analysed in lines long-term selected for high (HG) and low (LG) relative weight gain between 11 and 28?d of age, respectively, and constant body weight at 49?d of age.

2. Egg storage duration did not have an effect on average hatching time. LG quail, characterised by a fast postnatal growth rate immediately after hatching, hatched earlier than HG quail with a low early growth rate (about 391 vs. 406?h after egg setting, respectively).

3. In contrast to hatching time, the hatchability of fertile eggs was influenced by line as well as egg storage duration. Extended storage decreased hatching success in both lines. However, LG eggs exhibited a higher hatchability than HG eggs (1?d storage: 96·0 vs. 82·5%; 5?d storage: 88·7 vs. 72·7%, respectively).

4. Lower hatchability resulted mostly from a higher frequency of embryo death during early (up to d 7) and late (d 14 and later) phases of incubation.

5. An inadequate nutrient supply to embryos in consequence of developmental delay seems to be a key factor decreasing viability of embryos during incubation.  相似文献

1. The onset of lay, quality of eggs during early lay and gonadal development of both sexes were analysed in meat-type lines of Japanese quail, HG and LG divergently selected for high and low relative weight gain between 11 and 28 d of age, respectively, and constant body weight (BW) at 49 d of age. 2. The LG line was sexually mature at an earlier age and lower BW than the HG line. This corresponded with the trend during embryonic and early postnatal development. 3. Analysis of gonads also confirmed earlier sexual development in the LG than in the HG line. In both lines, the growth of testes was detected about one week earlier than the growth of ovary. 4. Despite the different age and BW at onset of lay, HG and LG quail commenced lay at the same degree of maturity (about 90% of adult BW). This implied that the onset of sexual maturity could be identified as a point on the growth curve which terminates the linear phase. 5. When compared with the LG line, the HG line was characterised by a longer acceleration and shorter retardation phase of the growth curve. This difference is seen as an important determinant of line differences in growth and reproductive performance.  相似文献

1. Hatching time, hatchability of fertile eggs and embryo mortality in relation to (1) physical quality of fresh eggs and (2) embryonic development during storage and incubation periods were analysed after egg storage for 1, 5 or 10 d at 30°C in the meat-type lines of Japanese quail, HG and LG, divergently selected for high and low relative weight gain between 11 and 28 d of age, respectively, and constant body weight at 49 d of age.

2. In both lines, the increase of egg storage temperature from 12°C (standard level) to 30°C increased the egg weight loss during storage, shortened the incubation period and reduced the hatching success.

3. Similar to standard egg storage temperature, LG quail hatched earlier than HG quail after egg storage at 30°C and early and late mortality of both lines increased with a prolonged period of egg storage. In contrast to the standard egg storage conditions, no line differences in hatchability were observed.

4. The results did not identify a relationship between the decrease in hatchability or embryo viability and line differences in external egg parameters as well as any important role of undesirable changes induced by a high storage temperature on albumen viscosity.

5. The pattern of embryonic death, low developmental rate of embryos and a dichotomy between the development of the extra-embryonic vascular system and the embryo itself during egg storage at high temperature implied that an insufficient nutrient supply in consequence of developmental delay could represent a key factor in increasing early and late embryo mortality.  相似文献

The objectives of this research were to evaluate gender differences and selection on body weight as they affect growth curves of chickens. Marginal posterior densities of growth curve parameters were studied by Gibbs sampling on 10,671 male and female chickens originating from five lines. Line X-+ was selected on low body weight at 8 wk (BW8) and high body weight at 36 wk (BW36), line X+- on high BW8 and low BW36, X++ on high BW8 and BW36, X-- on low BW8, and BW36, and X00 was an unselected control line. Growth was modeled by a Gompertz function. Heritabilities and genetic correlations among parameters of the Gompertz curve were estimated. Marginal posterior densities were drawn for parameters of the growth curve and for sexual dimorphism at ages ranging from hatching to 1 yr. Lines selected for a higher BW8 had higher initial specific growth rates (L), higher maturation rates (K), and lower ages at inflection (T(I)). Lines selected for a higher BW36 had higher asymptotic body weights (A). Estimates of A, L, and T(I) were higher in males and K was higher in females. Difference between sexes for A was greater in the line selected for a lower BW8 and a higher BW36. Dimorphism for L and K was the lowest in lines X++ and X--, respectively. The greatest difference in T(I) was observed in the line selected for lower BW8 and BW36. Sexual dimorphism of body weight was lower at most ages in the lightest line. Before 15 wk, sexual dimorphism in X++ line was lower than in the line selected for higher BW8 and lower BW36. The increase in sexual dimorphism with body weight could be reduced by selecting animals on body weight at two ages instead of one, as is usually done in commercial lines.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

1. Selection strategies for broilers must balance rapid growth with the welfare and health of animals, strategies must deal with the trade-off with other vital functions.

2. Divergent selection of Japanese quail for high (HG) and low (LG) relative body weight gain between 11 and 28 days of age has been conducted to accelerate linear phase growth without influencing the final adult body weight. Higher body growth rate is often connected with a weakened immune system. Therefore, the present study explored the immunological characterisation of quail from HG and LG lines, which differ substantially in their growth rate.

3. The trial evaluated the maternal investment to immunologically active substances, cell-mediated immunity stimulated by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) injection and the acute phase of the immune response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration in three different phases of early postnatal growth.

4. Except for higher lysozyme activity in the LG group when compared to the HG line, the maternal investment did not differ between the two lines. Plasma antibody concentrations responded quickly to any change in growth rate in both lines. Overall, it seems that initial rapid growth of the LG line had long-lasting effects on immune responsiveness, even after the growth rate of the HG line escalated during the linear phase of growth.

5. The study indicated that changes in the growth rate caused by the selection for growth in meat-type Japanese quail can influence the acute phase of the immune response and development of the immune system.  相似文献

A 10-generation divergent selection experiment for uterine capacity (UC) measured as litter size in unilaterally ovariectomized females was carried out in rabbits. A total of 2,996 observations on uterine capacity of does (up to four parities) was recorded. Laparoscopy was performed at d 12 of their second gestation, and ovulation rate (OR) and number of implanted embryos (IE) were recorded in 735 does. Prenatal survival (PS) was assessed as UC/OR, embryo survival (ES) as IE/OR, and fetal survival (FS) as UC/IE. Genetic parameters and genetic trends were inferred using Bayesian methods. Marginal posterior distributions of all unknowns were estimated by Gibbs sampling. Heritabilities of UC, OR, IE, ES, FS, and PS were 0.11, 0.32, 0.22, 0.04, 0.14, and 0.09, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between FS and ES were low, suggesting different biological mechanisms for the two periods of survival. After 10 generations of selection, the divergence was approximately 1.5 rabbits, or approximately 1% per generation. Approximately one-half of this response was obtained in the first two generations of selection, which may suggest the presence of a major gene segregating in the base population.  相似文献

1. The objectives of the present study were to estimate heritability and genetic correlations for feed efficiency and body weight (BW) in Japanese quail.

2. Recorded traits during different weeks of the growing period were BW from hatch to 35 d, feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI) from hatch to 28 d of age.

3. Genetic parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood method using ASREML software. The results showed that heritability estimates for BW ranged from 0.11 to 0.22, and maternal permanent environmental effect was the highest at hatch (0.45). FCR, RFI and FI showed moderate heritabilities ranging from 0.13 to 0.40.

4.Genetic correlations of BW28 with FI0–28 (0.88) and RFI0–28 (0.1) and genetic correlation of FI0–28 with FCR0–28 (0.13) and RFI0–28 (0.52) were positive. A negative genetic correlation was found between BW28 and FCR0–28 (?0.49). There was a high positive genetic correlation (0.67) between RFI0–28 and FCR0–28.

5. In conclusion, selection for increased BW and reduced FI in a selection index could be recommended to improve feed efficiency traits including FCR and RFI in Japanese quail.  相似文献

1. Individual growth curves of 7143 chickens selected for the form of the growth curve were fitted using the Laird form of the Gompertz function, BW4=BW0xe(L/K)(1-e-Kt) where BWt is the body weight at age t, BW0 the estimated hatching weight, L the initial specific growth rate and K the maturation rate. 2. Line and sex effects were significant for each parameter of the growth curve. In males, L, BW0, age and body weight at inflection (T(I)and BWI) were higher whereas K was lower than in females. Lines selected for high adult body weight had higher BW0 and BW(I) whereas lines selected for high juvenile body weight had larger estimates of L and lower estimates of T(I). 3. Data from 38,474 animals were included in order to estimate the genetic parameters of growth curve parameters in males and females, considering them as sex-limited traits. Genetic parameters were estimated with REML (REstricted Maximum Likelihood) and an animal model. Maternal genetic effects were also included. 4. Heritabilities of the growth curve parameters were moderate to high and ranged between 0.31 and 0.54, L, BW0 in both sexes and BW(I) in males exhibited significant maternal heritability. Heritabilities differed between males and females for BWI and T(I). Genetic correlations between sexes differed significantly from one for all parameters. L, K and T(I) were highly correlated but correlations involving BW0 and BW(I) were low to moderate. 5. Sexual dimorphism of body weight at 8 and 36 weeks and of L, K and T(I) was moderately heritable. Selection on growth curve parameters could modify the difference between sexes in precocity and thus in body weight at a given age.  相似文献

1. Divergent selection was conducted in male Japanese quail for high and low dustbathing activity as measured by the number of dust tosses during a dustbathing bout.

2. After 9 generations of selection the low, control and high lines averaged 6–9, 12.9 and 23.8 dust tosses per dustbathing bout respectively. Realised heritabilities in the low and high lines were 0.21±0.06 and 0.25±0.06 respectively, and agreed well with the heritability coefficient of 0.27±0.04 based on the combined sire and dam estimate from the sib analysis.

3. Correlated responses, similar to those in the selected trait, were found in the duration of the dustbathing bout and in the intensity index (the number of dust tosses per minute during a dustbathing bout). Heritabilities of latency, duration and intensity index were estimated as 0.14±0.04, 0.30±0.04 and 0.26±0.04 respectively.

4. It is concluded that postulated ethological needs may vary considerably between strains according to their genetic background and the previous history of selection of the birds during domestication.  相似文献

Weight-age data from 50 Retinta beef cows from 8 to 97 mo of age located in southwestern Spain were fitted to von Bertalanffy, Brody, and Richards functions to determine the relationship between growth curve parameters and cow efficiency. Only cows having at least 31 weights were included in the analysis. Von Bertalanffy, Brody, and Richards functions were fitted to weights of each cow. Relevant parameters of the three functions are A and K, associated with the asymptotic mature weight and rate of maturing, respectively. Criteria for comparisons among the three functions were computing difficulty, goodness of fit, and lack of bias of A. Productivity indicators were number of calves weaned during the first five calving seasons (NC), average birth weight (BWT), average weaning weight (WW), and average weaning weight per cow per year (WWY). The von Bertalanffy function was selected as the most appropriate. Least squares means for A and K were 650 +/- 8.17 kg and .038 +/- .001 mo-1, respectively. The values of NC, BWT, WW, and WWY were 4.0 +/- .11 calves, 38.2 +/- .4 kg, 218 +/- 5 kg, and 172 +/- 5 kg, respectively. Regression analysis for A indicated a decrease in NC when mature weight increased (P less than .05). There was a nonsignificant trend for heavier cows (higher A) to have calves with heavier BWT or WW. The value of WWY increased (P less than .05) with increased maturing rate (K) of cows. Two elliptical selection experiments were performed in two contemporary sire lines of rabbits (C and R) in order to optimize the experimental design for estimating the genetic parameters of the growth rate (GR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Twelve males and 19 females from line C, and 13 males and 23 females from line R, were selected from an ellipse defined by a quadratic index based on these traits. Data from 160 rabbits of each of the parental generations of lines C and R and their offspring (275 and 266 animals, respectively) were used for the analysis. A Bayesian framework was adopted for inference. Marginal posterior distributions of the genetic parameters were obtained by Gibbs sampling. An animal model including batch, parity order, litter size, and common environmental litter effects was assumed. Posterior means (posterior standard deviations) for heritabilities of GR and FCR were estimated to be 0.31 (0.10) and 0.31 (0.10), respectively, in line C and 0.21 (0.08) and 0.25 (0.12) in line R. Posterior means of the proportion of the variance due to common litter environmental effects were 0.14 (0.06) and 0.21 (0.06) for GR and FCR, respectively, in line C and 0.17 (0.06) and 0.22 (0.06) in line R. Posterior means of genetic correlation between both traits were -0.49 (0.25) in line C and -0.47 (0.32) in line R, indicating that selection for GR was expected to result in a similar correlated response in FCR in both lines.  相似文献

A single generation divergent selection study, replicated four times (1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986), was conducted to assess genetic differences between progeny of high and low feed conversion sires in Angus beef cattle and to determine correlated response for weight gain (ADG140), feed intake (AVFD140), and BW (OFFTSTWT) in a time- (140-d) and fat-constant (8.9 mm) period. Realized heritability estimates for unadjusted (feed/gain; FEFF140; .26) and adjusted feed conversion (adjusted as recommended by the BIF, 1986; ADJFDEFF; .46) were obtained. The difference in heritability estimates reflects variation accounted for by adjustment for BW differences, and thus maintenance requirements, of individual progeny. Phenotypic and "pseudo" realized genetic correlations of FEFF140 with ADG140, AVFD 140, and OFFTSTWT were -.33 and -.66, .49 and -.26, and .15 and -.41, respectively. Phenotypic and "pseudo" realized genetic correlations of ADJFDEFF with ADG140, AVFD140, OFFTSTWT, and FEFF140 were -.54 and -.59, .30 and -.23, .27 and -.36, and .97 and .49, respectively. Subcutaneous fat (as estimated by ultrasonic measurement; BF140) had phenotypic and "pseudo" realized genetic correlations with FEFF140 of -.33 and .66, respectively, and with ADJFDEFF of -.44 and -.58, respectively.  相似文献

In order to explore genetic variability of wool production and other quantitative traits, an 8-cohort divergent selection experiment for total fleece weight (TFW) was carried out in French Angora rabbits. Studies were made on the wool production of 669 female rabbits born between 1994 and 2001 and having produced wool from the third to 12th harvests. The aim of the selection experiment was to obtain two divergent lines (low and high) on total fleece weight. The studied traits included total fleece weight, weight of the two qualities of wool (WAJ1 and WAW1), homogeneity (HOM), live body weight at ages of 4 (LW4), 8 (LW8), 12 (LW12), 16 (LW16), and 20 (LW20) weeks and then 9 weeks before each harvest (9LW). A preliminary analysis of non-genetic factors was done with the GLM procedure. The genetic parameters and genetic trends were analysed using a BLUP animal model. Heritability estimates for TFW, WAJ1, WAW1, HOM, LW4, LW8, LW12, LW16, LW20 and 9LW were 0.38, 0.30, 0.10, 0.06, 0.30, 0.09, 0.14, 0.32, 0.39 and 0.45, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between TFW and WAJ1 were high (0.98 ± 0.01 and 0.89 ± 0.01, respectively). There was a low genetic correlation between TFW and 9LW (0.26 ± 0.12). After eight cohorts of selection, the divergence between the lines was approximately three genetic standard deviations. Selection for total fleece weight had a generally beneficial effect on fleece quality.  相似文献

This work evaluated the response to 10 generations of divergent selection for uterine capacity (UC) in rabbits to determine whether this response was symmetric by contrasting both lines against a cryopreserved control population. Animals came from the 13th generation of an experiment of divergent selection for UC and from a cryopreserved control population. The two UC lines were divergently selected for 10 generations, and selection was relaxed from the 11th generation until the 13th generation. Uterine capacity was estimated as litter size (LS) in unilaterally ovariectomized (ULO) does. To create the control population, embryos from the base generation were vitrified and stored in liquid N2 for 10 generations. Data from 461 pregnancies produced by 134 ULO does were used: 62 does from the high UC line, 55 females from the low UC line, and 17 females from the control line. The following traits were analyzed: ovulation rate (OR); number of implanted embryos (IE); (UC), estimated as total number of rabbits born; number born alive (NBA); prenatal survival (PS), estimated as UC/OR; embryo survival (ES), estimated as IE/OR; and fetal survival (FS), estimated as UC/IE. Ovulation rate, IE, PS, ES, and FS were measured by laparoscopy only in the second parity. Uterine capacity and NBA were measured over four parities. Responses in UC and its components were estimated as differences between the selected lines and the control line using a Bayesian approach. Selection for UC led to differences of 1.01 kits between the high and low lines, but this response was asymmetric. No differences were found between the high and control lines (high - control = -0.08), whereas the low and control lines differed by 1.08 kits, with a probability of the difference being greater than zero of 0.98. Difference between the high and low lines and between the control and low lines was one-half of the difference reported for correlated response in LS in previous studies. No differences in OR were detected among lines. The control and low lines differed by 1.06 IE, with a probability of the difference being higher than zero of 0.84. Prenatal survival for the low line was less than that of the control line. In summary, selection for UC was asymmetric, which was mainly due to a correlated response in PS. Response in UC was one-half of the difference reported for correlated response in LS in previous studies.  相似文献

Adult Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) which had been fed, since hatching, on either a conventional diet (low-fibre) or on the same diet diluted with 200 g oak sawdust/kg (high-fibre) took 8 to 10 d to adjust their food intake when their diets were interchanged. 2. Those fed on high-fibre weighed less than those fed on low-fibre diet, and body weight changed rapidly when the diets were interchanged. All the birds digested about the same weight of nutrients in a day, irrespective of diet, and this suggests that body weight differences were due mainly to differences in energy utilisation, birds fed on high-fibre diet having to expend more energy on feeding than those fed on low-fibre diet. 3. Gut size was greater in birds fed on high-fibre diet, presumably to accommodate the greater bulk of food eaten, and when the diets were interchanged the gut dimension of both groups changed at similar rates, reaching the appropriate sizes for the respective diets in 3 to 4 weeks.  相似文献

Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were fed on either a conventional diet (low-fibre) or the same diet diluted with 200 g oak sawdust/kg (high-fibre). The lengths of the colo-rectum, small intestine, two caeca combined and empty gizzard weight were measured at 10 and 20 weeks of age. Food intake and rate of passage were measured and an approximate measure of digestibility was also made. 2. There were separate effects of dietary fibre, sex and age on gut size. It was larger in birds fed on high-fibre diet, in females and in older birds. 3. Increased dietary fibre caused increased food intake, but had no obvious effect on the rate of passage. 4. When quail were fed on the low-fibre diet or the same diet diluted with 200 or 400 g cellulose powder/kg gut size at 20 weeks of age was greatest when the most fibrous diet was fed and decreased concomitantly with dietary fibre concentration. 5. It appeared that differences in gut size between dietary treatments were more a reflection of variations in food intake than of fibre per se, and that the effects of sex and age on gut size were probably similarly explained.  相似文献

1. Two selection indices which included a measure of food conversion efficiency in broiler production, were formulated: one index (I1) used individual 9‐week body weight and 5‐ to 9‐week food consumption (FC); the other (I 2) used individual 9‐week weight and sire‐family average food consumption (FC).

2. Three empirical parameter sets and 10 hypothetical data sets were used in calculating the indices and in predicting selection responses.

3. The three empirical parameter sets gave relatively similar index coefficients for I1 which were proportional to the relative economic weightings to the two traits.

4. Predicted economic responses to selection based on I 2 were negligibly superior to selection for body weight alone for nearly all data sets, whereas selection based on I1 was always superior in economic response.

5. Predicted economic response to selection based on I1 calculated from typical published estimates of genetic parameters was 20% greater than predicted response to selection for body weight alone.  相似文献
