The appropriate management of forest reserves is debated; two major alternatives are succession to ‘wild’ state, or management to produce semi-open stands. For temperate conservation stands, there are no strong experiments replicated at landscape level. In each of 22 forests rich in oaks (Quercus spp.) in Sweden, we set up a closed-canopy wild plot (1 ha), and a cutting plot (1 ha) to produce semi-open conditions, studying them before and after cutting. About 25% of the tree basal area was cut (large trees and dead wood retained) and harvested as bio-fuel, a CO2 - neutral energy source. We examined the response of beetles and trapped 59,000 individuals (1174 species; 100 red-listed species). For both the guild of herbivorous beetles (222 species) and of saproxylic beetles connected to oak wood (267 species), species richness increased by about 35% in the harvested plots, relative to the wild reference plots. Species composition within the groups changed, though not strongly. Thirteen saproxylic species of 50 analysed, and three herbivores of 12 increased in cutting plots. For red-listed saproxylic beetles, species richness did not change significantly. Regression analyses suggest that more open cutting plots disfavour the red-listed beetles of this forest type. Thus, partial cutting increased species diversity of two beetle groups, probably due to changed microclimate and increase in herbaceous plants, but some red-listed saproxylic beetles may be disfavoured. A hands-off alternative may through storms and other disturbances produce open patches, more dead wood, and favour some species. Combinations of these alternatives, carefully planned at the landscape level, need to be considered.  相似文献

We studied the impact of the invasive plant species Solidago canadensis on the species richness of vascular plants and the abundance, species richness and diversity of butterflies, hoverflies and carabid beetles in herbaceous semi-natural habitats near Ljubljana, Slovenia. The species groups were sampled in sites dominated by S. canadensis and paired nearby sites covered by semi-natural vegetation. Plant species richness and species richness, abundance and diversity of butterfly species were lower in plots dominated by S. canadensis. Hoverfly abundance, diversity and species richness were negatively affected only in July just before the onset of flowering of S. canadensis, but tended to be positively affected in August during the height of flowering of S. canadensis. Only the abundance of carabid beetles was reduced in plots dominated by S. canadensis. The responses of the insect groups seem largely driven by the effects of Solidago on the availability of essential resources like food or larval host plants. Our results suggest that insect species that are closely related to plant species composition are more vulnerable to the effects of invasive plant species than those that are loosely or only indirectly related to plant species composition.  相似文献

Traits such as poor dispersal ability and high habitat specificity are thought to predispose some species to a greater risk of extinction than others. Habitat preferences and morphological features associated with dispersal ability were compared between red-listed species and common congenerics co-occurring in boreal forests in northern Sweden. Measurements of body size, wing loading and wing aspect ratio were used to compare dispersal abilities, while catches from experimental treatments of dead wood were used to compare habitat preferences. We also compared how restricted red-listed species were to particular sites or habitats relative to common species. The red-listed Epuraea longipennis was longer and wider, while Epuraea. deubeli weighed less than common Epuraea species. In contrast to expectations, these red-listed species had a larger wing area (relative to their body mass) and thus a lower wing-loading than congeneric species, suggesting superior dispersal abilities. The red-listed Tachinus elegans possessed intermediate morphological characteristics, compared with common congenerics. However, the relationships between the risk of extinction in fragmented habitats and size and dispersal ability are likely to be scale-dependent, so intermediate or superior dispersal abilities may increase extinction risk at some scales. Red-listed species were not found in fewer sites or habitat types than congenerics so were not more likely to be habitat specialists. However, some red-listed species preferred deeply shaded and Fomitopsis pinicola-inoculated logs, relative to congenerics, suggesting that specificity to these particular microhabitats may be connected with extinction risk.  相似文献

Earthworms can have positive effects upon crop growth in the tropics. If soils are to be managed sustainably, then more attention should be paid to the effects of cultivation and cropping practices upon earthworms. When forest vegetation is cleared, slashed, burned and land is tilled and cultivated, earthworm abundance, diversity and activity are reduced. Conversely, retaining trees in agroecosystems may maintain earthworm populations during the cropping phase.Here, we assessed the impact on earthworm species diversity and densities of crop cultivation in the understorey of timber plantations thinned to two tree densities and compared these with uncropped, undisturbed timber plantation controls. The plots were reassessed after two and a half years of fallow to see whether populations had recovered. The experiment was in central Cameroon.Seventeen earthworm species were recorded from Eudrilidae subfamilies Eudrilinae and Pareudrilinae, Ocnerodrilidae and Acanthodrilidae, most of which were endemics. This included two new species from two new genera from the sub-family Pareudrilinae, one new species from one new genus of Ocnerodrilidae, two new species of Dichogaster and one new species of Legonodrilus. Ten species were epigeic, six were endogeic and one was anecic.Generally, earthworm densities were lower in cropped plots than in the undisturbed plantation control. The most abundant species was a Legonodrilus sp. nov. with average densities of 49 individuals m−2 in the crop phase and 80 ind. m−2 in the fallow phase. By the fallow phase, densities in the low tree density (120 ind. m−2) were higher than in the high density (40 ind. m−2). The densities of the epigeic Acanthodrilidae were significantly reduced to 7 ind. m−2 in the cropped plots compared with 42 ind. m−2 in the control plots. The effects of cropping were thus species-specific and more work is required to identify which of these endemics are the ecosystem engineers in the system.  相似文献

Winter food for farmland birds can be enhanced by planting seed-rich ‘winter bird crops’ (WBCs), the content of which is highly variable. Data from three winters (October to March in 1998/1999, 1999/2000 and 2000/2001) were used to assess the value of different WBCs for lowland farmland birds in England, based on around 100 plots per winter. Densities of gamebirds, insectivorous and seed-eating passerines were generally higher on WBCs than on conventional crops, stubbles or grassland (except for skylark (Alauda arvensis) and rook (Corvus frugilegus). Kale supported high densities of the widest range of bird species (including insectivorous and seed-eating species), quinoa was used by finches and tree sparrows (Passer montanus), and (unharvested) seeding cereals supported high densities of buntings. Sunflowers, phacelia and buckwheat supported low densities of most bird species. The differences between WBCs were more marked in late winter, owing to better seed retention by kale and quinoa compared with other crops. A combination of kale, quinoa and seeding cereals will support the highest densities of the greatest variety of bird species, but WBC content can also be varied to suit circumstance or species. This study demonstrates the value of WBCs for a wide range of birds, and discusses this with respect to existing ‘agri-environment schemes’, highlighting the need for similar options in pastoral landscapes where seed resources are particularly rare.  相似文献

The switch from spring-sown to autumn-sown cereals and the loss of habitat heterogeneity are often suggested to be key drivers of breeding bird decline on arable farmland. Yet, both factors are interlinked and it remains uncertain whether autumn-sown cereals reduce breeding bird numbers also in the structurally complex arable farmland of northern Europe. We tested whether autumn-sowing of cereals at both local and landscape scales affected the breeding bird community in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape of south-central Sweden. Rotation between sowing types was used as a semi-experiment based on 34 spring- vs. 41 autumn-sown cereal plots centred on infield non-crop islands of similar structure, size and surroundings. Species richness and territory abundance of ground-foraging species were significantly lower in autumn- than in spring-sown cereal plots both in the crop fields and the infield non-crop islands during the breeding season. No such effect was observed among foliage gleaning birds. Species richness in spring-sown cereal plots was less the more autumn-sown crops in the surrounding landscape within a 500 m radius. Average skylark densities did not differ between autumn- and spring-sown cereal plots because habitat preferences changed; densities declined in autumn-sown cereals during the growing season whereas they increased on spring-sown fields which had shorter swards throughout the breeding season. Our results indicate that negative effects of autumn-sown crops on breeding bird numbers spill over into both neighbouring non-crop and crop habitats. We conclude that agri-environmental schemes should place more emphasis on facilitating the value of the cropped area of fields as a foraging and nesting habitat. The retention of various non-crop habitats alone may not provide sufficient food close to nest sites for farmland birds that rely on crop fields for foraging.  相似文献

Intensive forest management in Scandinavia has decreased the amount of dead wood required by saproxylic (wood-living) organisms. To reduce this problem, some dead wood is now retained during forest operations, often in the form of man-made high stumps (ca. 4 m high). Most often these stumps are cut with a harvester, although the stumps in this study were made with explosives. The aims of this study were to determine whether such stumps of aspen (Populus tremula) and birch (Betula spp.) could be used by red-listed saproxylic beetles (Coleoptera), and to examine how the fauna of man-made high stumps differs from that of natural stumps. We also studied how tree species, sun-exposure, stage of decay and trunk diameter influenced the fauna. In 169 samples of bark from high stumps 116 saproxylic species were found, of which 21 were red-listed. Many species, including red-listed ones, were more associated with man-made stumps than with natural stumps. However, in total, more species were found in the natural than in the man-made stumps. This is probably because man-made stumps provide a more homogeneous type of wood substrate than natural ones. Among the other variables the difference between aspen and birch was the most important. We conclude that man-made high stumps are valuable habitats for many saproxylic beetle species.  相似文献

Traditionally managed arable fields host a specialised flora adapted to regular disturbance through tillage. Agricultural intensification during the 20th century resulted in a pronounced biodiversity decline in European agroecosystems. Anthoceros agrestis and Phaeoceros carolinianus, both largely confined to cultivated land in Central Europe and the only representatives of hornworts in northern Switzerland, are examples of species that decreased in Central Europe during the last century. A repeated survey of 28 arable fields in the Swiss Plateau from 1989 to 1995 demonstrated that crop type and associated farming routines were critical in determining hornwort occurrences. During the 10 years following the completion of this survey, agri-environment schemes were introduced aiming at a more environmental-friendly agricultural production. We re-investigated the selected sites in 2005–2007 to examine whether these programmes favoured hornworts. We found a significant decrease of untilled autumn stubble-fields, which accounted for a decline of hornworts. High relative summer air humidity positively affected hornwort occurrence. Gametophytic populations of both taxa regenerated from the persistent diaspore bank after years of unfavourable conditions. To ensure the long-term persistence of hornworts in the Swiss Plateau, we recommend three alternative modifications of current Swiss agri-environment schemes to be implemented in cereal fields with known hornwort occurrences: (1) Tailored conservation headlands, (2) Autumn stubble-fields and (3) Field margin strips sown with arable flora but without crop plants. The proposed practices will promote other typically ephemeral arable bryophytes and seed plants and are likely to be advantageous also for other organisms, such as farmland birds.  相似文献

Since 1992 the European Union helps member states to reverse the loss of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes by the financial support of agri-environment schemes. Long-term studies investigating the effects of these schemes are an essential prerequisite for the development of an effective policy to restore biodiversity on farmland. In Dutch meadow landscapes almost all agri-environment schemes focus on the restoration of meadow bird populations by postponement of the mowing date. Between 1990 and 2002 we measured long-term changes in meadow bird densities in areas with and without agri-environment schemes in the Netherlands, both before and after the start of the contract. During these years bird territories were surveyed during five field visits between 15 March and 15 June. Densities of black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa), and redshank (Tringa totanus) were higher in the areas with management agreements, but these differences were already present before the start of the contracts. After the start of the management contracts densities of black-tailed godwit and oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) did not increase, while those of lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) and redshank even declined relative to the control areas. It is concluded that the current agri-environment schemes are not sufficient to restore meadow bird populations in Dutch agricultural landscapes. In addition to the prescribed postponement of the mowing date, it is probably necessary to raise groundwater levels and to reduce fertilization to allow for the development of an open vegetation structure that will increase chick survival to sufficiently high levels.  相似文献

Seven short‐fallow plant species were evaluated for their aboveground biomass production, nutrient accumulation, and weed suppression potential in Nkolbisson, Cameroon. The fallow species included Arachis pintoi, Vigna radiata, Desmodium intortum, Centrosema pubescens, Indigofera hirsutus, Indigofera spicata, and Pueraria phaseoloides. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications and seven treatments (fallow species). Twelve months after planting, highly significant differences (p < 0.01) were observed among fallow species for phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations, respectively, in plant tissue. Similarly, highly significant differences (p = 0.0013) occurred among fallow species for aboveground biomass production, which ranged between 3.12 t ha?1 (I. spicata) and 9.16 t ha?1 (A. pintoi). Potassium only showed highly significant differences among plant species for nutrient accumulation (p = 0.0001). However, A. pintoi, C. pubescens, I. hirsutus, and P. phaseoloides yielded substantial amounts of recycled N (>100 kg ha?1 year?1) that can benefit the subsequent crop. For small‐scale producers, these species are likely to supply adequate nitrogen for cereal crops. A total of 26 weed species belonging to 15 botanical families were encountered in the various plots. Weed dry weight differed significantly (p = 0.02) among the fallow plots and ranged from 0.12 t ha?1 (in P. phaseoloides plots) to 2.32 t ha?1 (in A. pintoi plots). Results of this study suggest that there are a wide range of plant species that could be used in improved fallow technologies aimed at improving nutrient‐degraded soils and suppressing weeds.  相似文献

Soil microarthropod populations in maize plots mulched with the prunings of three woody agroforestry plant residues (Acioa barteri, Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala) and two crop residues [maize (Zea mays) stover (leaves and stems) and rice (Oryza sativa) straw] were monitored throughout the 1991 growing season and compared with those in fallow, bare fallow and unmulched control plots with three rates of nitrogen application. The mean densities of detritivore and phytophage microarthropods in the experimental plots decreased in the following order: rice straw > Gliricidia prunings > Leucaena prunings > maize stover > Acioa prunings > control 2 (90 kg N ha-1 year-1) > fallow > control 3 (135 N) > control 1 (45N) > bare fallow. Mulching also affected the population dynamics of predatory microarthropods and omnivorous ants. The chemical composition of plant residues probably influenced the densities of detritivore and phytophage microarthropods, which in addition were also greatly influenced by microclimatic conditons imposed by vegetation cover. Extremely low densities of microarthropods were recorded in the bare fallow plots probably as a result of the combined effects of absence of plant residues and vegetation cover. The potential of mulching as a component of farming practice for increasing the density of microarthropods and for influencing their species composition and population dynamics in agroecosystems is discussed.  相似文献

Pigeon pea is cultivated by most smallholder crop–livestock farmers mainly as a border crop. It is quite often sparsely intercropped in cereal‐based cropping systems in the subhumid zone of Ghana. Management of pigeon pea and its biomass is a promising means of improving many abandoned arable fields but has not been consciously undertaken. The objective of this trial was to explore the use of pigeon pea and the management of its pruned biomass as part of an improved fallow for crop–livestock farming. Three pigeon‐pea management options and a natural fallow (two‐year fallow period) were compared in terms of maize grain yield and changes in soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and cation exchange capacity. Pigeon pea grain yield ranged between 615 and 678 kg ha−1 and 527 and 573 kg ha−1 in the first and second year of fallow, respectively. In the first year after fallow, maize grain yield ranged between 0·43 and 2·39 t ha−1 and was significantly influenced by the fallow system. There was a marked decrease in maize grain on the pigeon pea fallow plots in the second year, ranging between 50 and 38·6 per cent in Kumayili and between 42·6 and 17·6 per cent in Tingoli. After the two‐year fallow period, increase of soil organic carbon on the pigeon pea fallow plot compared with the natural fallow plot was 30·5 per cent, and there was an improvement of total nitrogen (48·5 per cent) and CEC (17·8 per cent). The effect of arable field margin composition on invertebrate biodiversity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A replicated field experiment designed to compare five types of field margin in terms of their invertebrate biodiversity was established in North Yorkshire, UK. Four replicate margins on arable land each contained five treatment plots 72 m long by 6 m wide. The treatments were: (1) cropped to the edge; (2) sown ‘tussocky’ grass mix; (3) sown ‘grass and wildflower’ mix; (4) Split margin (3 m ‘tussocky’ grass adjacent to hedge and 3 m ‘grass and wildflower’ next to crop); and (5) natural regeneration. Invertebrates were sampled by pitfall trapping, sweep netting, and butterfly and bumblebee transects, and identified to species level. The use of different flower species by foraging bumblebees was also examined.Despite all treatments containing a flush of annual weeds early in the establishment year, the five margin types were distinct in their vegetation composition by their first mid-summer. Where statistically significant results were obtained for invertebrates, avoidance of the ‘cropped’ treatment was by far the commonest observed response. This tendency could be clearly demonstrated amongst the carabids, spiders, butterflies, bumblebees, millipedes and harvestmen, with margins often containing double or more the number of invertebrates of similar areas cropped to the edge. Having avoided the crop, preferences for other margin types were mixed, but there was a marked tendency by many nectar and/or pollen-feeding, flying insects towards greater abundance on those margins containing sown ‘wildflowers’ (e.g. butterflies Meadow Brown and Ringlet, Bumblebees, Pollen Beetle Meligethes sp.) or flowers either sown or unsown (Soldier Beetle Rhagonycha fulva). There was a less strong tendency for predatory species occurring in the vegetation canopy and depending on small, especially flying insects for food, to also prefer the flowery treatments (e.g. total spiders caught by sweeping, seven-spot ladybird). Harvestmen in autumn reject natural regeneration in favour of any sown treatment. Only one species, the carabid Nebria brevicollis, was trapped in higher numbers in the cropped treatment than on any sown margin, and then only in autumn. Of the six common bumblebee species, the two longest-tongued species showed different patterns of flower visitation from the remaining four.These results clearly demonstrate that sown field margins can rapidly produce substantial biodiversity benefits on arable land, with the resulting fauna influenced by the type of field margin created.  相似文献

A survey of butterfly numbers on two plots of arable farmland in southern England in 1984 was carried out using the transect method of Pollard et al. (1975). On one plot the field edges were left unsprayed with pesticides (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) from 1 January and on the other all fields were fully sprayed in accordance with normal farming practice. Sprayed and unsprayed transect sections were paired up according to adjacent field boundary habitat type.A total of 868 butterflies were recorded on the unsprayed plot compared to 297 on the sprayed plot. Of the 17 species recorded on more than one survey section, 13 were significantly more abundant on the unsprayed treatment. Butterfly species whose larval host plants occurred in unsprayed field edges showed slightly larger differences in number between treatments than species less able to breed in weedy cereal crops.The results suggest that pesticide use on cereal crops may reduce butterfly numbers and that arable farmland is a habitat in need of further study for butterfly conservation.  相似文献

Effects of diverse agricultural land management practices on soil and on root colonizing fungal communities were determined through a PCR-based molecular method and a culture-dependent method, respectively, in a field location with uniform soil type. Initiated in July 2000, the management systems were: conventional tomato production, frequent tillage (disk fallow), undisturbed weed fallow, bahiagrass pasture (Paspalum notatum var. notatum ‘Argentine’), and an organically managed system including cover crops and annual applications of poultry manure and urban plant debris. Culture-dependent colony counting was used to identify and enumerate communities of root colonizing fungi and length heterogeneity polymerase chain reaction (LH-PCR) analysis of internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1) profiles to characterize phylotypes in soil fungal communities. Three years after initiation of land management treatments and midway through tomato cultivation, both methods detected a high degree of similarity in fungal community composition between weed fallow and bahiagrass plots. Soil fungal communities in organically managed plots were similar to each other and distinct from communities in other land management systems while the composition of root colonizing fungal communities in organic plots was divergent. The results demonstrate that the soil fungal communities and root colonizing fungal communities were affected differently depending on land and crop management practices. Fusarium oxysporum was a dominant species in all soil and root colonizing fungal communities except those subjected to organic management practices.  相似文献

In this study we examined the effects of glucose-C on the activities of fungi and bacteria determined by the method of substrate-induced respiration (SIR) in combination with the selective inhibition technique, the immobilized-S and the arylsulphatase (ARS) activity in two calcareous arable and fallow soils. The amounts of glucose-C were added at six doses: 0, 125, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg kg− 1 soil to the soils and then incubated for one week with a Na235SO4 solution (518.9 kBq kg− 1 dry soil and 20 mg S kg− 1 dry soil) prior to analysis. At the highest dose of 1000 mg kg− 1 soil, fungal activity increased by 59.1% (of the dose 0) versus 45.5% for bacterial activity in the arable soil, while in the fallow soil the increases were more marked and corresponded to 69.9% and 71.1%, respectively. Largest increase in immobilized-S was observed in the arable soil (300.7%) compared with the fallow soil (153.1%). In contrast, the ARS activity increased by 16.4% in the arable soil versus 32.1% in the fallow soil. These results indicate that glucose proportionately affected more the intensities of immobilized-S than those of ARS. Strong positive correlation coefficients were found between fungal activities and immobilized-S in the arable soil (r = 0.96, P < 0.01) and in the fallow soil (r = 0.98, P < 0.001). However, non-significant correlations were observed between fungal activities and ARS in both studied soils. As to bacterial activities, positive significant correlation coefficients were found with immobilized-S in the arable soil (r = 0.95, P < 0.01) and in the fallow soil (r = 0.90, P < 0.05) as well as with ARS activities in the arable soil (r = 0.83, P < 0.05) and in the fallow soil (r = 0.97, P < 0.01). Overall, we also found positive and significant correlation coefficients of immobilized-S with ARS activities in the arable soil (r = 0.86, P < 0.05) and in the fallow soil (r = 0.83, P < 0.05). Accordingly, the results showed a presence of extracellular arylsulphatase activity of 38.7 mg p-nitrophenol kg− 1 soil h− 1 in the arable soil and of 63.5 mg p-nitrophenol kg− 1 soil h− 1 in the fallow soil. It was concluded that fallowing maintained larger activities of fungi, bacteria and arylsulphatase compared with the arable soil.  相似文献

Breeding bird density and vegetation structure were determined during three breeding seasons in 14 plots on power-line corridors through forests in East Tennessee. The purpose was to describe the corridor bird community and to relate bird density and diversity to a number of environmental variables. The relative abundance of forbs, blackberry Rubus ssp., saplings, and areas of planted grasses varied significantly among plots. Thirteen bird species appeared to be attracted to the corridors. Seven of these species were classified as brush species, three as edge species, and three as generalist species, depending on their relative abundance in corridor, edge, and forest, respectively.Control of bird community density on the corridors was complex because individual species densities correlated significantly with several different variables. These variables were Rubus density and patchiness, sapling density and patchiness, corridor width, length of coniferous or deciduous forest edge, coverage of planted grasses, and number of years following vegetation maintenance by cutting.Bird community density varied among plots from 210 to 750 pairs km?2, and increased asymptotically with Rubus density. Rubus density explained most of the variation and Rubus patchiness explained a significant additional portion. Species number varied little. Within plots, birds were registered significantly less often in grass-dominated areas than in forb-Rubus-dominated areas.  相似文献

To study the influence of fallow on plant parasitic nematodes and soil fertility, the difference in the growth of millet in a greenhouse was compared in sterilized and naturally infested soil. These soils are ferruginous and were taken from a 17-year-old fallow plot and a neighbouring cultivated field, located in the region of Thysse Kaymor in Senegal. The plant-parasitic nematode community of the previously cultivated soil consisted primarily of two species: an ectoparasite, Tylenchorhynchus gladiolatus, and an endoparasite, Scutellonema cavenessi. The soil from the fallow plot was infested with many species, but under the influence of the millet crop, it evolved towards the two species situation observed in the cultivated soil, except that under the experimental conditions (in pots), Pratylenchus pseudopratensis replaced S. cavenessi. Whether or not the soil was infested with nematodes, the previous fallow period had a positive effect on the development of successive millet crops. The impoverishment of the soil through repeated cultivation and the impact of nematodes both reduced crop growth. The two factors evolved in the same way, that is a decrease in the development rate of the millet as the number of crop cycles increased. The symptoms of soil impoverishment can be corrected, either by suppressing the nematodes or by fallowing.  相似文献

The influence of agroforestry practices on the temporal fluctuation of nematodes was studied in western Kenya. The experiment comprised a fallow phase, which had the following treatments: (1) maize/beans intercropping; (2) maize/beans intercropping with rock phosphate; (3) Crotalaria fallow; (4) Crotalaria fallow with rock phosphate; (5) Crotalaria fallow with rock phosphate (+ Calliandra and napier hedges); and a cultivation phase when all plots were planted to maize and beans. There were strong seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of both free-living and plant-parasitic nematodes. The abundance of plant-parasitic nematodes did not vary among cropping systems during the fallow phase, but varied significantly during the cultivation phase of the experiment. Pratylenchus spp. appeared to be stimulated by the application of phosphorus while Scutellonema spp. had higher populations in the maize crops, which were planted after a Crotalaria fallow. In both the fallow and the cultivation phases, the sampling date had a significant impact on nematode abundance. There were more plant-parasitic nematode species during the fallow phase of the study, but the evenness of the different nematode communities was significantly greater in the cultivation phase of the experiment.  相似文献

The changes in population size of carabid beetles inhabiting an ancient woodland were analysed in a long-term investigation covering a period of nine years (1994–2002). The amplitude of fluctuations of the relative density of these species was estimated and compared with those of carabid beetles inhabiting recent woodlands and more unstable habitats in open landscapes. To analyse this, 8 pitfall traps were set in an ancient beech and oak woodland in the nature reserve “Lüneburger Heide” in northern Germany and were emptied every fortnight the whole year round.Catching rates for some species (e.g. Carabus problematicus and Abax parallelepipedus) fluctuated only slightly, whereas those of other species (e.g. C. violaceus and C. auronitens) varied as much as ten-fold. Comparison of these results with those of other long-term investigations of recent woodlands and also of more open habitats showed that in each of the three habitat types some species varied very little in abundance and others, very widely. So it seems that the amplitude of fluctuations in abundance is a feature of each single species rather than a special attribute of their habitats.  相似文献
