Summary Four cultivars of Populus spp., compatible to varying degrees with four races of M. larici-populina Kleb., were raised in a controlled environment on a high (28°/20°C, day/night) and low (20°/10°C) temperature regime. Leaf discs cut from the plants were inoculated separately with four individual races of M. laricipopulina and subsequently incubated at either low (20°C) or high (25°C) temperature for 14 days when disease development on the discs was assessed using three parameters (Incubation period to flecking, uredia per leaf disc and uredospores per mm2). The degree of resistance in all cultivar/race combinations was high on cultivars cultured at a high temperature regime compared to those cultured on a low temperature regime. Analysis of variance demonstrated that the major components: pre-inoculation temperature regime, post-inoculation temperature regime, race and cultivar, and most second and third order interactions between these were highly significant (P<0.001) for most disease parameters. The variance of the temperature components and all interactions involving these were usually higher than those for the cultivar and race components and those interactions lacking temperature components.These results emphasize the importance of the temperature regime at which plants are raised and the temperature of incubation, following the inoculation in determining the relative degree of resistance of these cultivars of poplar to races of M. larici-populina. The implications of these results in the epidemiology of leaf rust and the stability of the host-parasite relationship are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Nineteen isolates of Melampsora medusae (Thüm.), collected from natural stands of Populus deltoides (Bartr.) along the lower Mississipi River Valley, were tested for the occurrence of physiologic races by inoculation of nine poplar clones. Eight distinct races were identified based upon differential responses on these clones. However, most of the isolates also differed in their aggressiveness (latent period and uredial number per leaf disk), and a significant isolate × cultivar interaction was observed for both traits. Within a specific geographic location, more than one race was present. Isolates from the northernmost sampling location (37°N latitude) appeared more aggressive than those from southern latitudes (34–36°N latitude). Thus wild pathosystems may be composed of variable pathogen populations differing in virulence and the apparent stability usually observed in such systems may be due to the genetic diversity of the host population in interaction with many epidemiological and ecological factors.The investigation reported in this paper (No. 86-8-96) is in connection with a project of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and is published with approval of the Director.  相似文献

Summary Cultures of crown rust (Puccinia coronata Corda) from a mixed uredospore population obtained from plants in 16 localities in England and Wales were multiplied on four of 10 initially resistant clones of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). Only two of the four cultures were found to be most pathogenic on the clones on which they had been multiplied. One clone became very susceptible to its own culture but the other became only moderately susceptible. Clone/culture interactions occurred which were not obviously related to the clone of origin of the culture. Thus, there was considerable genetic diversity in the crop which would tend to limit the multiplication of new races. There was a strong correlation between visual score for susceptiblity and uredospore production, showing the value of visual scores for resistance breeding.  相似文献

Summary The Australian Bunt Collection, obtained from infected crops between 1962–1977, has been classified into races, based on the differential reactions to ten known bunt resistant genes. Eight physiologic races of Tilletia laevis and three of T. tritici were identified. No race had virulence against the genes Bt3, Bt5, Bt8, or Bt10, of wheat. Consequently four major genes are available for breeding Australian wheat cultivars with resistance to common bunt.  相似文献

Summary The genetic constitution of two bread wheat accessions from the International Spring Wheat Rust Nurseries (E 5883 and E 6032) has been studied for reaction to four Indian races of stem rust. Analysis of E 5883 has revealed that for each of the races 15C, 21 and 40 a single dominant gene operates for resistance. The dominant gene against race 15C was identified as Sr6. The dominant genes for resistance against races 21 and 40 were found to be different from the genes described so far. Resistance against race 122 is controlled by a single recessive gene producing characteristically a 2 type of reaction. This gene was identified as Sr8.The resistance of E 6032 against each of the races 15C, 21 and 40 is controlled by two genes, one dominant and one recessive, which act independently. Dominant genes effective against 15C, 21 and 40 were conclusively identified as Sr6, Sr5 and Sr9b, respectively. From the correlated behaviour against races 15C and 40 as well as from the phenotypes of the resistance reactions rhe same recessive gene, undescribed so far, operates against the two races. The second recessive gene operating against race 21 was also observed to be different from those so far designated. E 6032 was, however, found to be susceptible to races 122.The presence of Sr6 both in E 5883 and E 6032 against race 15C was further confirmed through F2 and F3 segregation data.  相似文献

Summary In oat cv. Delphin (Bonda x Carstens Vii) two complementary genes were found conferring resistance to sixteen cultures of ten crown rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. var. avenae Fraser ET Led.) races. Summary Inheritance of the brown hypersensitive resistant (BHR), non-hypersensitive resistant (R) and susceptible (S) host reactions produced by three races of the bacterial pustule pathogen (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vignaeunguiculatae) was studied in 45 F1, F2 and testcross progenies, using the infiltration inoculation method BHR reaction was dominant over R and S reactions, and R was recessive to S reaction. Two genes appeared to be involved in BHR reaction; one governing BHR reaction to race 1 and the other to races 1 and 2. Both were ineffective against race 3. R reaction, effective against all the races, appeared to be controlled by one, two or three recessive genes. One cowpea line had one BHR gene and two duplicate recessive R genes. Reaction expression in the segregants was clear and as expected with races 2 and 3 but was modified with race 1, possibly due to interactions between dominant or recessive alleles of the BHR genes and the homozygous recessive allele of the R genes. Gene symbols Bp-1 and Bp-2 are proposed for the BHR genes and bp-3, bp-4 and bp-5 for the recessive R genes. Summary Infection Type (IT) and Uredinial Number per Leaf Disk (ULD), induced on eleven cultivars of poplar in vitro, were employed to compare five radiation induced, mono-uredinial mutant lines of Melampsora medusae Thum. with the wild type race 5A from which they were derived. IT produced by the mutants was higher than (eight cultivars), similar to (two cultivars) and pronouncedly less than (IT from 4 to 1 in P. deltoides cv. 7–2) that of race 5A. Although the five mutants produced a uniform IT within a particular cultivar. ULD varied significantly between mutants on individual cultivars and there was a significant differential interaction of the mutant lines with cultivars. The ranking of mutant lines for aggressiveness on cultivars was not consistent while the differences among the mutants in mean ULD over all cultivars were not associated with the dosage level of irradiation from which they were isolated. The implications of the results in the interaction of leaf rust with poplar cultivars are discussed.  相似文献

Summary A total of 1789 accessions of several lettuce collections was screened to find new major gene resistance to the downy mildew fungus Bremia lactucae Regel. The accessions belonged to the species Lactuca sativa (N=1288), L. serriola (N=399), L. saligna (N=52) and L. virosa (N=50). A total of 20 races of B. lactucae were used, 14 of which were NL-races, isolated from cultivated lettuce in the Netherlands. The other six races were isolated from wild L. serriola in Czechoslovakia. The accessions were initially screened with two races: NL1 and NL3. Accessions with resistance to one or both of these races were tested with the other races. Phenotypes with new resistance were found in accessions of all four Lactuca species. Of L. sativa, four accessions were found with resistance phenotypes that could not be explained by combinations of known major genes. Many accessions of L. serriola had resistance phenotypes that indicated the presence of unknown resistance genes. All interactions between accessions of L. saligna and races of B. lactucae were incompatible in leaf disc tests, except for four accessions, which showed some sporulation with race NL6. Several accessions of L. virosa were resistant to all races used. Other accessions of L. virosa gave a race-specific interaction with B. lactucae.  相似文献

Summary Forty nine common bean lines comprising of exotic accessions and locally grown cultivars evaluated against Colletotrichum lindemuthianum exhibited differential resistance to its races in Himachal Pradesh, a north-western Himalayan state of India. Some exotic accessions like G 2333, Cornell 49242, PI 207262, Mexique 222, TO, Perry Marrow, Kaboon and Widusa were resistant to more than five Indian races, whereas two Indian accessions KRC-5 and Hans showed resistance to six and four races, respectively. However, nine accessions KRC-8, KR-40, KR-43, KR-81, KR-62-2, KR-90, KR-142, KR-148, and KR-216 were resistant to three races. Race specific resistance has been observed in different bean cultivars. Studies on inheritance of resistance in exotic accession G 2333 and Indian accession, KRC-5 showed that two independent dominant genes conferred resistance in G 2333 to race 3 and 515 and a single dominant gene controlled resistance in KRC-5 to race 775, indicating resistance from these sources is easily transferable to the locally adapted susceptible cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Four hundred and forty-nine lines of Lactuca spp. were screened for resistance to an isolate of Microdochium panattoniana. Eighty-seven lines were resistant. Forty-four lines were then screened for resistance to four isolates; twelve groups of lines were identified on the basis of their pattern of resistance. A differential set of lines was used to analyse nine further isolates; this revealed five races of M. panattoniana. Salad Bowl was the only cultivar found to be resistant to three races. A line of L. saligna, UC83US1, was the only line found to be resistant to all the isolates tested.  相似文献

Summary The introgression of wildfire (races 0 and 1) and angular leaf spot (ALS) resistance from N. rustica var. Brasilea into N. tabacum has proved economically useful in Zimbabwe although the mode of inheritance of, and genetic relationships between the resistance are unknown. This study was undertaken to (1) examine the mode of inheritance of the resistance to races 0 and 1 of wildfire, and ALS, (2) determine the genetic relationship between the resistances and (3) establish whether the N. rustica-derived wildfire race 0 resistance is allelic to that obtained from N. longiflora. Inheritance was examined under greenhouse and field conditions by studying disease reactions in the parental, F1, F2 and backcross generations derived from crosses of three susceptible lines to a resistant line Nr-7. Three-point backcrosses to the susceptible parent were examined for linkage and segregating generations from a cross of Nr-7 to Burley 21 which carries the N. longiflora race 0 resistance were used to test for allelism. In general, we observed that all resistances are determined by a single dominant gene although some incosistent ratios were obtained likely due to misclassification of disease reactions and erratic transmission. All resistances showed linkage although pleiotropism cannot be ruled out. Allelism tests demonstrated that the N. rustica race 0 resistance is not allelic to that obtained from N. longiflora. Our findings are examined in relation to the efficacy of indirect selection for resistance.  相似文献

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are separated into two distinct groups: Andean and Middle American. We identified CAL 143 as the first Andean bean with resistance to angular leaf spot disease caused by Phaeoisariopsis griseola. Angular leaf spot is the most widespread and economically important bean disease in southern and eastern Africa, and it is especially severe on the extensively grown Andean beans. Cal 143 was resistant in Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia, but it was susceptible in Uganda. This was attributed to the presence of races of P. griseola in Uganda not present in the other countries. We identified two additional Andean bean lines, AND 277 and AND 279, with resistance to angular leaf spot in Malawi. We also characterized the virulence diversity of 15 isolates of P. griseola from southern and eastern Africa into nine different races. Five of six isolates from Malawi and two of seven from Uganda, obtained from large-seeded Andean beans, were characterized into four different races considered Andean. These were compatible only or mostly with large-seeded Andean cultivars. The other eight isolates from Uganda, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, obtained from a small- or medium-seeded Middle American beans, were characterized into five different Middle American races. These were compatible with Middle American and Andean cultivars. CAL 143 was resistant or intermediate under greenhouse conditions to all but one of the same 15 isolates from southern and eastern Africa, but it was susceptible to an isolate from Uganda obtained from a medium-seeded Middle American bean. Summary Fifty-four land races of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), indigenous to areas of Brazil where anthracnose (caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum) is a common problem, were evaluated in field nurseries for partial resistance to race Brazilian 1 (B1) of C. lindemuthianum using symptom severity classes (SSC) from 0 to 6. Plants were selected if symptoms were present and the SSC was less than the 95% confidence interval of the mean SSC of the susceptible cultivar Carioca. S1 progeny from selected plants were evaluated in air-conditioned chambers for partial resistance to races B1, delta, and kappa of C. lindemuthianum. Of 246 S1 families evaluated, 145 families were partially resistant to one or two of the races [symptoms present, but S1 family mean significantly (p<0.05) less than the mean of Carioca] and susceptible to the third. Six families were partially resistant to all three races. The remaining families were either susceptible or segregated for reaction to race B1. Partial resistance to C. lindemuthianum showed race specificity in the air-conditioned chambers and field nurseries.  相似文献

Qualitative observations of Hevea spp. resistance to Phyllachora huberi were carried out on 200 clones in a collection and 21 full-sib progenies under natural conditions of infestation. A total of 42 clones, mostly originating from the natural range of the Hevea genus, and at least two species (H. brasiliensis and H. benthamiana) revealed total resistance to the parasite. For nine of the thirteen `resistant ×susceptible' and `resistant × resistant' progenies studied, the ratio of susceptible: resistant plants suggested the existence of a total resistance mechanism produced by a dominant allele at a single locus for the P. huberi race(s) present at the study site. For three of the progenies involving the same resistant parent, it was possible to locate the gene (called Phr) at 14.7 cm from the adhisozyme locus. Summary A simultaneous analysis of the virulence of races 1, 2 and 4 of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi to a series of nine carnation cultivars revealed the presence of different interactions between races and cultivars, as well as differences in pathogenesis between race 1 on the one hand and race 2 and 4 on the other.The most common race 2 induced typical symptoms of Fusarium wilt in all susceptible cultivars. The cultivars showed considerable variation in resistance to race 2. Only Novada remained free of external symptoms throughout the experiment. In diseased plants of all cultivars studied, infected vascular tissue was white with dark brown margins, and heavy degradation of the cell walls and xylem parenchyma cells had occurred. All Dutch isolates corresponded with race 2.Race 4 induced wilt symptoms similar to those induced by race 2, and there was a similar variation in resistance to race 2 and 4 in the cultivars. On average, the race 4 isolates were less aggressive than those of race 2. Compared with race 2, there was evidence of some genotype × race interactions: Pallas proved to be considerably more susceptible, and Lena more resistant to race 4 than to race 2. The isolates of race 4 induced a nistopathology similar to that induced by race 2, but with less vascular browning.Race 1 induced atypical but severe wilt symptoms and unusual vascular discoloration in Elsy, Niky and Sam's Pride only. The vascular tissue in these cultivars turned pale brown; in spite of heavy colonization of these tissues virtually no degradation of cell walls was observed. All other cultivars tested proved virtually resistant to race 1, providing further evidence for genotype × race interactions.Within races, limited but statistically significant genotype × isolate interactions were found as well, in particular within race 4. These are tentatively attributed to independent variation of two (or more) resistance components.  相似文献

Summary Shoot tip cultures from banana clones susceptible and resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (FOC) race 1 and race 4 were grown in vitro in the presence of different concentrations of fusaric acid and fungal crude filtrates or inoculated with a conidial suspension of FOC to assess correlation between in vivo and in vitro behaviour. Explants were susceptible to both filtrate and fusaric acid irrespective to their known field resistance/susceptibility response. No clear linkage between in vivo and in vitro behaviour was observed and our results suggest that the use of crude filtrate or non-host specific toxin (fusaric acid) in a screening programme for selecting a novel resistant genotype of Musa to FOC is not feasible. When peroxidase activity was used as a parameter to discriminate between sesceptibility and tolerance, results were in good agreement with field response of host plant to pathogens. The virulence spectra of 50 Rhynchosporium secalis isolates from a population in the Western Cape province of South Africa were determined, and 21 races were detected when evaluated against 17 differential cultivars. The virulence spectrum of the R. secalis population shows considerable variation, and carries unnecessary virulence genes which is quite unexpected, since chiefly susceptible barley cultivars are grown in the south Western Cape. The two most prevalent races, namely races 4 and 7 had three and four virulence genes respectively. Both race 4 and 7 were virulent on the most susceptible cultivars, West China, Steudelli, C.I.8618 and C.I.2226. Considering the resistance genes reported for the cultivars Atlas 46, Turk, and C.I.3515 which showed no susceptible cultivar-pathogen interaction, it would appear that the Rh-Rh3-Rh4 complex is primarily involved in conferring resistance to the local R. secalis isolates This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Barley in Italy has recently been seriously affected by Rhynchosporium secalis. The pathogenic variation of the fungus was studied and 17 races were differentiated on 13 barley cultivars carrying most of the currently known genes for resistance. RC 1, the most virulent and most frequent race, was virulent on 10 out of the 13 differentials and the remaining races proved to be less virulent variants of RC 1. Atlas (C.I. 4118), Atlas 46 (C.I. 7323) and Osiris (C.I. 1622) were the only three differentials resistant to all the analyzed single-spore isolates.Differential cultivars previously assumed to have identical resistance factors did not react in the same way to all the Italian races, thereby revealing either undisclosed differences in the genes described or the presence of additional unidentified ones.Our findings were compared with previous data about virulence of scald populations from different countries, on the basis of tests with common differentials: fundamental differences were found between the Italian population and those of other countries with regard to virulence patterns.The susceptible reactions to race RC 1 of most barley cultivars grown in Italy indicate the urgent need for resistance genes to be incorporated in the cultivated material. Seventy-one barley accessions, known as sources of resistance in different parts of the world, were screened for their behaviour to races RC 1 and RC 13. Summary Resistance toMeliodogyne chitwoodi races 1 (MC1) and 2 (MC2) andM. hapla (MH) derived fromSolanum bulbocastanum was introduced into the cultivated potato gene pool through somatic fusion. The initial F1 hybrids showed resistance to the three nematodes. Resistance to reproduction on roots by MC1 was accompanied by resistance to tuber damage in F1 clones. Tuber damage sometimes occurred, however, in hybrids of BC1 progeny resistant to reproduction on roots when MC2 and MH were the challenging nematodes. Resistance to reproduction was transferred into BC1 individuals, but a greater proportion of BC1 progeny was resistant to MC1 than to MC2 or MH. Resistance to MC1 appears to be dominant and discretely inherited. F1 and BC1 progeny were pollen sterile, but seed were produced from crosses using cultivated tetraploid pollen sources. Approximately 11 and 33 per cent of pollinations produced berries on F1 and BC1 pistillate parents, respectively.
