Measurement of the dynamic pulmonary compliance was carried out on 27 normal dogs weighing 11-8 to 26-4 kg Variations in the results of repeated observations and difficulties in allowing for differences in lung size between dogs limited the usefulness of the measurement as a test of lung function. Pulmonary compliance was found to correlate better with trunk length than with bodyweight or chest circumference. The mean value for dynamic pulmonary compliance measured during inspiration in 27 normal dogs was 0-117 litre/cmH20 with a standard deviation of 0-046 litre/cmH2O. Measurements were made on six dogs with clinical respiratory disease.  相似文献

Propofol as an intravenous anaesthetic agent in dogs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Studies in dogs with an emulsion formulation of the intravenous anaesthetic, propofol, showed that induction of anaesthesia was smooth and it was possible to maintain anaesthesia by intermittent injection. The mean dose for induction of anaesthesia in unpremedicated dogs was 5.95 mg/kg body-weight. When no premedication was administered anaesthesia was maintained by a total dose of approximately 0.806 mg/kg/minute. Premedication with between 0.02 and 0.04 mg/kg of acepromazine reduced the mean induction dose by about 30 per cent and the maintenance dose by more than 50 per cent. In 68 unpremedicated dogs given one dose, recovery was complete in a mean time of 18 minutes and after maintenance of anaesthesia by intermittent injection in 65 dogs the mean recovery time was 22 minutes from administration of the last dose. Premedication with acepromazine did not produce statistically significant increases in these recovery times. The quiet, rapid and complete recovery proved to be most valuable in cases where the animal had to be returned to the owners' care with the minimum of delay.  相似文献

Medetomidine 10 μg/kg, was combined with butorphanol 0.1 mg/kg and administered intramuscularly to 27 dogs requiring sedation for various diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. All the dogs became deeply sedated. Heart rate fell by a mean of 55 per cent. Eighteen dogs showed signs of pain as the combination was injected. Sedation was sufficient for the intended procedure to be carried out in 25 of the dogs. General anaesthesia was induced in four dogs — the mean dose of thiopentone required for induction of anaesthesia was 2 mg/kg. Administration of atipamezole at the end of the procedure produced rapid and sudden recoveries in all the dogs, with a mean time to standing of nine minutes.  相似文献

The analgesic effects of acupuncture were studied in 38 dogs affected by acute thoracolumbar disc disease, type I to IV. Steel acupuncture needles were inserted into selected acupuncture points. Stimulation time was 20 minutes. Electrical stimulation of needles, ear-acupuncture, vitamins B and C and antibiotics were occasionally used in some dogs of types I and II and in the majority of types III and IV. Pain relief was observed in 62.5 per cent of dogs of type I (back-pain), in 70.5 per cent of dogs of type II (hindlimb paresis, backpain) and in 39 per cent of dogs of types III and IV (hindlimb paralysis, backpain) after the first acupuncture treatment. Dogs of type I and II responded significantly better (P<0.01) than dogs of type III and IV at the fourth treatment (100 per cent and 61.5 per cent, respectively).  相似文献

Medetomidine at doses of 10, 20 or 30 microg/kg was administered along with 10 microg/kg buprenorphine intramuscularly to 48 dogs requiring sedation for various diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. The heart rate, respiratory rate and degree of sedation were recorded before and 30 minutes after administration of the drugs. Heart rate fell by a mean of 55 per cent and respiratory rate by a mean of 62 per cent. Mean sedation scores were increased in all groups. Administration of atipamezole at the end of the period of sedation produced rapid recoveries, with a mean time to standing of 12 minutes. Animals that were anaesthetised required much less thiopentone than the 10 mg/kg recommended after premedication with acepromazine maleate.  相似文献

In 30 clinically healthy dogs (weights 7.5 to 57 kg) and in 41 proteinuric dogs the 131I-hippuran blood disappearance curve after single injection was determined (0 to 90 minutes), described by a bi-exponential function and analysed according to a two compartment model. The dependence of the blood clearance (C), representing an effective renal blood flow, on the bodyweight (W) (kg) could be described with both a linear function (C = 61 + 13.2 W ml min-1) and a power function (C = 30.56 W0.79 ml min-1) in the healthy dogs. The results of the regression between blood clearance and bodyweight were reproducible (r = 0.92, n = 10 residual error 12 per cent, P less than 0.01).  相似文献

Static respiratory compliance was measured in a series of normal dogs. The values (mean SEM) for total compliance (n = 42), pulmonary compliance (n = 42) and chest wall compliance (n = 93) were 61 (3–8), 82 (4–7) and 94 (3-3) ml/ cmH20, respectively. There was a strong positive correlation between bodyweight and chest wall circumference and all divisions of compliance (r 0–55) and a slight negative correlation (r = -0–39) between age and chest wall compliance. There was a significant difference between compliance values for narrow chested dogs and broad chested dogs (P < 0–01). Of the four most frequently encountered breeds in this study (border collie, German shepherd, labrador retriever and rottweiler) the German shepherd dog had the strongest correlation between bodysize and compliance while the rottweiler, in general, showed a negative correlation. When corrected for body-weight the border collie had the highest compliance values and the rottweiler had the lowest. It was concluded from this study that compliance values for specific breeds cannot be extrapolated from the general population data and must be determined on an individual breed basis.  相似文献

Two groups of three calves were exposed to monodisperse aerosols of radiolabelled polystyrene spheres measuring 3.3 microns in aerodynamic diameter (SD 0.3 micron). Although the spheres preferentially deposited in the trachea and major bronchi, 72 per cent of the total radioactivity deposited was found in lung tissue beyond the major bronchi. Mean alveolar deposition, estimated from the end retention value after mucociliary clearance, was 34 per cent in the group of bull calves and 52 per cent in the group of heifer calves. Alveolar deposition increased from 47 to 56 per cent (P less than 0.05) in heifer calves treated with oestradiol. Mucociliary clearance of the spheres was unaffected by repeated exposure to the experimental aerosol and the overall mean mucociliary clearance rate constant was 1.28 (+/- 0.43) h-1 (half-life 32 minutes). Clearance curve profiles tended to be characteristic for individual calves but variation in mucociliary clearance rates within calves was high and on occasions clearance rate inexplicably fell to 10 to 50 per cent of the maximum achievable value for the calf. Neither mucociliary clearance rate nor alveolar deposition was affected by a change in climate from 14 degrees C, 87 per cent relative humidity to 5 degrees C, 75 per cent relative humidity. Both alveolar deposition and mucociliary clearance of the spheres could be manipulated using a beta-adrenergic treatment.  相似文献

Arterial-alveolar carbon dioxide tension differences (a-A) PCO2 and alveolar dead space were measured during clinical halothane anaesthesia of 110 horses with the help of continuous infra-red carbon dioxide analysis of expiratory gas. Mean (a-A) PCO2 was 1.6 +/- 0.8 kPa. Alveolar dead space expressed as a percentage of alveolar tidal volume had a mean value of 23 +/- 13 per cent. Influence on (a-A) PCO2 and alveolar dead space of the following variables was tested statistically: age, weight, body position, respiration mode and duration of anaesthesia. (a-A) PCO2 was influenced positively by weight (P less than 0.0001) and adoption of dorsal recumbency (P less than 0.01). Alveolar dead space was influenced positively by weight (P less than 0.0005), adoption of dorsal recumbency (P less than 0.01), intermittent positive pressure ventilation (P less than 0.0001) and duration of anaesthesia (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To assess attributes of sevoflurane for routine clinical anaesthesia in dogs by comparison with the established volatile anaesthetic isoflurane. METHODS: One hundred and eight dogs requiring anaesthesia for elective surgery or diagnostic procedures were studied. The majority was premedicated with 0.03 mg/kg of acepromazine and 0.01 mg/kg of buprenorphine or 0.3 mg/kg of methadone before induction of anaesthesia with 2 to 4 mg/kg of propofol and 0.5 mg/kg of diazepam. They were randomly assigned to receive either sevoflurane (group S, n=50) or isoflurane (group I, n=58) in oxygen and nitrous oxide for maintenance of anaesthesia. Heart rate, respiratory rate, indirect arterial blood pressure, haemoglobin saturation, vaporiser settings, end-tidal carbon dioxide and anaesthetic concentration and oesophageal temperature were measured. Recovery was timed. Data were analysed using analysis of variance and non-parametric tests. RESULTS: Heart rate (85 to 140/minute), respiratory rate (six to 27/minute) and systolic arterial blood pressure (80 to 150 mmHg) were similar in the two groups. End-tidal carbon dioxide between 30 and 60 minutes (group S 6.4 to 6.6 and group I 5.8 to 5.9 per cent) and vaporiser settings throughout (group S 2.1 to 2.9 and group I 1.5 to 1.5 per cent) were higher in group S. There was no difference in time to head lift (18+/-16 minutes), sternal recumbency (28+/-22 minutes) or standing (48+/-32 minutes). No adverse events occurred. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Sevoflurane appeared to be a suitable volatile anaesthetic for maintenance of routine clinical anaesthesia in dogs.  相似文献

Four groups of 20 dogs were anaesthetised by means of target-controlled infusions of propofol designed to achieve 2.5 microg/ml, 3.0 microg/ml, 3.5 microg/ml or 4.0 microg/ml of propofol in blood. The dogs' pulse rate and respiratory rate were recorded before premedication and induction, immediately after endotracheal intubation and three and five minutes later (times 0, 3 and 5, respectively), and their arterial blood pressure was recorded oscillometrically just before induction and at times 0, 3 and 5. The targets of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 microg/ml resulted in the successful induction of anaesthesia in 13 (65 per cent), 16 (80 per cent), 20 (100 per cent) and 20 (100 per cent) of the dogs, respectively. The incidence of postinduction apnoea was 0 (0 per cent), one (5 per cent), two (10 per cent) and eight (40 per cent) at time 5 for groups 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mug/ml, respectively, and its incidence at time 5 was significantly higher in the 4.0 microg/ml group (P<0.05) than in the other groups. In all the groups there was a significant (P<0.05) decrease in blood pressure between just before induction and the later measurements. Although there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of inducing anaesthesia at a specific target, a target of 3.5 microg/ml appears to ensure a successful induction of anaesthesia without a significant increase in the incidence of apnoea.  相似文献

Compliance with a 10-day course of oral antibacterial drugs in dogs being treated as outpatients at a veterinary clinic was assessed by use of pill count data obtained by telephone interview. The association between compliance and several possible determinants of compliance was investigated. Ninety-five animal owners were included in the study, with 44 per cent reporting 100 per cent compliance with the treatment regimen and as many as 88 per cent reporting a compliance level of 80 per cent or more. The compliance level was significantly higher (P < 0.002) when the animal owners felt that the veterinarians spent enough time on the consultation. Moreover, compliance was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for dogs being treated for gastrointestinal infections compared with those being treated for other diseases.  相似文献

O bjectives : Intra-operative, gastro-oesophageal reflux may be associated with post-anaesthestic complications such as oesophagitis and oesophageal stricture in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of preoperative administration of omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, on oesophageal pH in anaesthetised dogs.
M ethods : Forty-seven dogs undergoing elective pelvic limb orthopaedic surgery were enrolled into the study. These were randomly allocated to treatment group (n=22) or control group (n=25). The treatment group received one dose of omeprazole (1 mg/kg po) at least 4 h before anaesthesia. All dogs were anaesthetised by the same standardised protocol. A pH probe was inserted into the distal oesophagus after induction of anaesthesia and oesophageal pH was continuously monitored.
R esults : In the treatment group, four animals (18 per cent) showed a sudden decrease in oesophageal pH (<4). In the control group the same phenomenon was detected in 13 animals (52 per cent). Gastro-oesophageal reflux occurred more frequently in the control group compared with the omeprazole group (odds ratio 4·7, 95 per cent C.I. 1.1 to 24.7, P=0.032).
C linical S ignificance : This study suggests that the preoperative administration of omeprazole is effective in reducing the incidence of gastro-oesophageal reflux during anaesthesia in dogs.  相似文献

Seventy-eight dogs with atopic dermatitis were treated for four months with either cyclosporin A or methylprednisolone. During the two months after the treatment ceased, 87 per cent of the dogs treated with methylprednisolone relapsed after a mean period of 27.9 days, whereas only 62 per cent of the dogs treated with cyclosporin A relapsed after a mean period of 40.7 days (P < .0.001). The clinical condition of the dogs was evaluated either when they relapsed, or two months after the treatment ceased if they had not relapsed. Both the skin lesions and pruritus increased significantly more markedly in the dogs treated with methylprednisolone than in those treated with cyclosporin A. At the end of the study the skin lesions were markedly less severe than before the therapy; in the dogs in both groups that did not relapse, the lesion score was improved by 77 per cent two months after the treatment had stopped, and in the dogs that did relapse the lesion scores had improved by 45 per cent and 35 per cent in the dogs treated with cyclosporin A and methylprednisolone, respectively. Pruritus remained well controlled in the dogs that did not relapse, but increased to baseline levels or close to baseline in the dogs that relapsed.  相似文献

Two antibacterial shampoos for the treatment of canine bacterial overgrowth syndrome (BOGS) were compared in a prospective controlled clinical trial. Forty dogs with clinical signs (pruritus, erythema and excoriations without pustules and/or collarettes) and cytological findings compatible with bacterial overgrowth were treated twice weekly with 3 per cent chlorhexidine shampoo (3 per cent CHX) or 2.5 per cent benzoyl peroxide shampoo (2.5 per cent BPO) and evaluated every two weeks for up to six weeks until cytological cure. Pruritus, erythema, greasy seborrhoea, malodour, excoriations, secondary hair loss, lichenification, hyperpigmentation and lesion extent were each scored on a 0 to 3 severity scale and combined to calculate an aggregate score. Among the 34 dogs with good compliance to treatment, reduction of cocci counts of at least 90 per cent was recorded in 11 of 18 dogs after 3 per cent CHX and nine of 16 dogs after 2.5 per cent BPO, with no significant difference between the two products (P=0.98). Lesion score was significantly reduced in both groups (63.48 (34.45)) per cent with 3 per cent CHX v 54.45 (33.61) per cent with 2.5 per cent BPO, P=0.36) and time to cytological cure was not significantly different between groups (P=0.13), at the end of the treatment. In the present study, 3 per cent CHX and 2.5 per cent BPO were similarly effective in the treatment of canine BOGS.  相似文献

Ventilatory effects at induction of anaesthesia were studied following intubation in 66 dogs anaesthetised using thiopentone (10 mg/kg) or propofol (4 mg/kg, injected rapidly or 4 mg/kg, injected slowly). Acepromazine and morphine preanaesthetic medication was administered, and anaesthesia was maintained with halothane in nitrous oxide and oxygen. The time from connection of the breathing system to the first breath was measured. Apnoea was defined as cessation of spontaneous respiration for 15 seconds or longer. Respiratory rate and minute volume were measured for the first five minutes of anaesthesia. Propofol was associated with a greater incidence of apnoea than thiopentone (59 per cent and 64 per cent compared with 32 per cent), but this difference was not statistically significant. Time to first breath was significantly longer with propofol than thiopentone and longest with the slower injection of propofol (P<0.05) (median of four seconds for thiopentone, 19.5 seconds for the propofol rapid injection, and 28.8 seconds for the propofol slow injection). In conclusion, the induction agent and speed of injection affect the incidence and duration of post-intubation apnoea.  相似文献

Post race endoscopy was carried out on 255 two-year-old quarter horses and exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) was diagnosed in 166 (65 per cent) of them. Visible epistaxis was seen in a higher proportion of geldings than in either mares or stallions. The prevalence of EIPH was similar in mares (73 per cent) and in geldings (74 per cent). A significantly lower prevalence (49 per cent) was noted in stallions (P less than 0.01). It was concluded that a sex variation in the prevalence of EIPH exists in two-year-old quarter horses.  相似文献

Methods of transferring one bovine embryo to the ipsilateral uterine horn have been compared. In heifers mid-ventral surgical laparotomy under general anaesthesia (n=22) was compared with flank surgery with paravertebral anaesthesia (n=21). Pregnancy rate was higher with a midventral approach (P less than 0.05) (77.3 per cent of 42.9 per cent respectively). In heifers mid-ventral surgery (n=36) was compared with two methods of non-surgical transfer either using the Cassou insemination gun (n=36) or a modification of it (n=39) with embryos collected on days 7, 8 or 10 after oestrus. There were no differences in pregnancy rate between methods or different ages of embryos (methods: 55.6, 55.6, 43.6 per cent respectively; Day: 48.8, 55.8, 48.1 per cent respectively) but the condition score of recipients affected success (P less than 0.05). Of 10 cows which each received an embryo using the modified Cassou gun eight became pregnant.  相似文献

The minimum alveolar concentration of desflurane when combined with a continuous infusion of medetomidine at 3.5 microg/kg/hour was measured in seven ponies. Anaesthesia was induced with medetomidine (7 microg/kg intravenously) followed by ketamine (2 mg/kg intravenously) and maintained with desflurane in oxygen. The infusion of medetomidine was started 20 minutes after the induction of anaesthesia. The electrical test stimulus was applied at the coronary band (50 V, 10 ms bursts at 5 Hz for one minute), and heart rates and rhythms, arterial blood pressures, and arterial blood gas tensions were measured at intervals, just before the application of the stimulus. The mean (sd) minimum alveolar concentration of desflurane was 5.3 (1.04) per cent (range 3.2 to 6.4 per cent), 28 per cent less than the previously published value for desflurane alone after the induction of anaesthesia with xylazine and ketamine. The cardiopulmonary parameters remained stable throughout the period of anaesthesia. The mean (sd) time taken by the ponies to stand after the administration of desflurane ceased was 16.5 (6.17) (range 5.8 to 26) minutes, and the quality of recovery was good or excellent. However, one pony died shortly after standing; a postmortem examination revealed that it had chronic left atrial dilatation.  相似文献

The pulmonary hemodynamic response to unilateral alveolar hypoxia was investigated in pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs with mild heartworm (HW) disease and in dogs free of HW (HWF). Left lung nitrogen ventilation in HWF dogs resulted in a decrease in the fraction of the cardiac output (QT) perfusing the left lung (QL) from 0.37 +/- 0.03 (SEM) to 0.20 +/- 0.02 (P less than 0.01). In contrast, dogs with mild HW disease did not develop a significant decrease in QL/QT which decreased from 0.38 +/- 0.02 to 0.33 +/- 0.02. This attenuated pulmonary vascular response to regional alveolar hypoxia in dogs with HW disease was associated with a normal pulmonary arterial pressure (14.8 +/- 1.5 mm of Hg) that was not different from that seen in HWF dogs (15.8 +/- 1.7 mm of Hg). These results indicate that mild HW disease interferes with the ability of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction to redistribute pulmonary blood flow away from hypoxic regions of the lung.  相似文献
