The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in secretion of inhibin and cellular localization of the inhibin alpha and inhibin/activin (beta(A) and beta(B)) subunits in male Japanese quail from 1 to 7 weeks after hatching. The post-hatch profile of plasma luteinizing hormone (LH), immunoreactive (ir) inhibin and testosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay. Testes were immunostained by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method (ABC) using polyclonal antisera raised against inhibin alpha, inhibin/activin beta(A) and inhibin/activin beta(B) from one week of age to sexual maturity. Testicular weight increased gradually until 4 weeks and abruptly increased from 5 weeks of age onwards. The plasma concentrations of LH and ir-inhibin increased significantly at 5 weeks of age, and the plasma concentration of testosterone increased significantly at 6 weeks of age. Pituitary contents of LH showed a steady increase until 6 weeks of age and then abruptly increased at 7 weeks of age. Coincident to the increase in plasma testosterone, the testicular contents of testosterone significantly increased from 5 weeks through sexual maturity. Immunohistochemically, localization of the inhibin/activin alpha, beta(A) and beta(B) subunits was found in the Sertoli and Leydig cells at all ages of development from one week of age to sexual maturity. These results suggest that Sertoli and Leydig cells are the major source of inhibin secretion during development in male Japanese quail. 相似文献

Normal growth characteristics of llamas (Lama glama) were evaluated from conception until 1 week after parturition in pregnant females (study 1) and from 1 month after birth to maturity (study 2). In study 1, pregnant multiparous llamas (n = 10) were measured at monthly intervals from conception until 1 week after parturition; in study 2, llamas (n = 270) were measured once. Body weight of pregnant llamas (study 1) did not increase significantly until after the eighth month of pregnancy. Llamas of study 2 reached mature height, length, thoracic circumference, and weight at 18, 24, 36, and 36 months of age, respectively. From 1 month of age to maturity, the growth characteristics of males, nonpregnant females, and females during the first 8 months of pregnancy did not differ. Correlations (r2) between height, length, and thoracic circumference related to body weight for all but the pregnant llamas during the last 3 months of pregnancy were 0.822, 0.834, and 0.948, respectively. 1. 480 Broiler breeder pullets, kept in individual cages, were subjected to different rates of increase in food allocation during the period 18 to 30 weeks of age. From 80 g food/bird d at the start of the experiment, the 5 treatments comprised linear weekly increments in food allocation to reach a maximum of 150 g/bird d at 21, 23, 25, 27 or 29 weeks of age respectively. 2. Body weight, liver weight, fat pad weight and alimentary tract weight were influenced by the rate of increment in food allocation. 3. Rate of development of the oviduct and the ovary was not influenced by these treatments. 4. Although the amount of fat and protein contained in the liver increased most rapidly on the treatments where 150 g/bird d was attained first, by 25 weeks of age there were no meaningful differences in these two variables between treatments. It is unlikely, therefore, that a high protein intake during this period would allow sufficient protein or energy to be stored in the liver to sustain a higher egg output later in the laying period. 5. It is concluded that the amount of protein required by a broiler breeder pullet for maintenance and for growth during the pre-laying period is about 10 g/bird d. 相似文献

1. Turkey poults (1620) were used to compare the effects of three lighting programmes on heavy strain males reared to 188 d: constant light (24L:0D, CON); increasing light (6L:18D at 7 d gradually increasing to 20L:4D by 63 d, INC); a pattern identical to INC followed by a decrease in daylength from 84 d to 10L:14D at 112 d (DID). 2. Lighting affected growth pattern but had no effect on body weight at 118 d or overall food to gain ratio. 3. Both INC and DID lighting reduced overall mortality in comparison to CON light primarily because of a reduction in the incidence of skeletal disease and spontaneous cardiomyopathy. INC and DID lighting increased the incidence of cannibalism. 4. Turkeys given INC or DID lighting had a superior ability to walk in comparison to those birds given CON light. 5. INC and DID males stood, ate and drank more frequently, and sat less often than CON turkeys during behavioural observation. 6. There were no lighting effects on carcase composition except that INC and DID birds had heavier keel bones. The ultimate force per cm2 (stress) required to break femora was greater for turkeys given INC and DID lighting (P = 0.065). 7. Plasma testosterone concentrations at 117 d were 272.5, 115.2 and 29.5 pg/ml for turkeys given CON, INC and DID lighting, respectively (P= 0.072). REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The concept of functional adapatation of articular cartilage during maturation has emerged from earlier biochemical research. However, articular cartilage has principally a biomechanical function governed by joint loading. OBJECTIVES: To verify whether the concept of functional adaptation can be confirmed by direct measurement of biomechanical properties of cartilage. HYPOTHESIS: Fetuses have homogeneous (i.e. site-independent) cartilage with regard to biomechanical properties. During growth and development to maturity, the biomechanical characteristics adapt according to functional (loading) demands, leading to distinct, site-dependent biomechanical heterogeneity of articular cartilage. METHODS: Osteochondral plugs were drilled out of the surface at 2 differently loaded sites (Site 1: intermittent impact-loading during locomotion, Site 2: low-level constant loading during weightbearing) of the proximal articular cartilage surface of the proximal phalanx in the forelimb from stillborn foals (n = 8), horses of age 5 (n = 9) and 18 months (n = 9) and mature horses (n = 13). Cartilage thickness was measured using ultrasonic, optical and needle-probe techniques. The osteochondral samples were biomechanically tested in indentation geometry. Young's modulus at equilibrium, dynamic modulus at 1 Hz and the ratios of these moduli values between Sites 1 and 2 were calculated. Age and site effects were evaluated statistically using ANOVA tests. The level of significance was set at P<0.05. RESULTS: Fetal cartilage was significantly thicker compared to the other ages with no further age-dependent differences in cartilage thickness from age 5 months onwards. Young's modulus stayed constant at Site 1, whereas at Site 2 there was a gradual, statistically significant increase in modulus during maturation. Values of dynamic modulus at both Sites 1 and 2 were significantly higher in the fetus and decreased after birth. Values for both moduli were significantly different between Sites 1 and 2 from age 18 months onwards. The ratio of values between Sites 1 and 2 for Young's modulus and dynamic modulus showed a gradual decrease from approximately 1.0 at birth to 0.5-0.6 in the mature horse. At age 18 months, all values were comparable to those in the mature horse. CONCLUSIONS: In line with the concept of functional adaptation, the neonate is born with biomechanically 'blank' or homogeneous cartilage. Functional adaptation of biomechanical properties takes place early in life, resulting in cartilage with a distinct heterogeneity in functional characteristics. At age 18 months, functional adaptation, as assessed by the biomechanical characteristics, has progressed to a level comparable to the mature horse and, after this age, no major adaptations seem to occur. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Throughout life, different areas of articular cartilage are subjected to different types of loading. Differences in loading can adequately be met only when the tissue is biomechanically adapted to withstand these different loading conditions without injury. This process of functional adaptation starts immediately after birth and is completed well before maturity. This makes the factor of loading at a young age a crucial variable, and emphasises the necessity to optimise joint loading during early life in order to create an optimal biomechanical quality of articular cartilage, which may well turn out to be the best prevention for joint injury later in life. 相似文献

SUMMARY: The cellular and enzymatic characteristics of dissected subcutaneous and perirenal adipose tissues were examined in a total of 102 male and female animals from commerical flocks of the Karagouniko dairy sheep. The animals were slaughtered in groups of three males and three females at 45-day intervals from birth to 720 days of age. The following determinations were made on each animal: (1) subcutaneous and perirenal chemical fat, (2) fat cell size and number and (3) the activities of NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase in subcutaneous and perirenal adipose tissues. Subcutaneous adipose tissue expanded by a combination of fat cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia during the accelerating phase of the growth curve of chemical fat, after which the fat expansion was accomplished primarily by hyperplasia. The changes in perirenal chemical fat weight with increasing age were primarily due to hypertrophy of fat cells during the accelerating phase of the curve of chemical fat growth and due to a combination of hypertrophy and hyperplasia during the diminishing phase of the curve. The enzyme activities were higher in subcutaneous than in perirenal adipose tissue, with the NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase being the most active enzyme in both tissues and sexes. The changes in enzyme activities in subcutaneous adipose tissue with increasing age were parallel to the changes in the rate of chemical fat weight during growth. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Zellularitaet und enzymatische Aktivitaet des Fettgewebes beim Karagouniko Milchschaf von der Geburt bis zur Reife. Es wurden die Anzahl und die Groesse der Fettzellen sowie die Aktivitaeten der NADP-Isocitrat-Dehydrogenase und der 6-Phosphogluconat Dehydrogenase in subcutanen und perirenalen Fettgewebe des Schafes waehrend des Wachstums undersucht. Das Tiermaterial bestand aus 51 maennlichen und 51 weiblichen Schafen der Karogouniko Milchrasse. Die Schafe wurden in Gruppen bestehend aus 3 maennlichen und 3 weiblichen Tieren in 45-taegigen Abstaenden von der Geburt bis zum Alter von 720 Tagen geschlachtet. Es wurden die folgenden Merkmale erfasst: Chemisches Fett, Anzahl and Groesse der Fettzellen, Aktivitaeten der gennanten Enzyme. Das subcutane Fettgewebe wuchs durch eine Kombination von Hypertrophie und Hyperplasia waehrend der beschleunigten Phase der Wachstumskurve fuer das chemische Fett. Nach dieser Wachstumsphase, das weitere Wachstum des subcutanen Fettgewebes kam vorwiegend durch Hyperplasia der Fettzellen zustande. Das perirenale Fettgewebe wuchs zunaechst durch Hypertrophie der Fettzellen und anschliessend durch eine Kombinationn von Hypertrophie und Hyperplasia. Die Aktivitaet der NADP-Isocitrat-Dehydrogenase war hoeher als die Aktivitaet der 6-Phosphogluconat-Dehydronase in beiden Geweben und Geschlechtern waehrend der gesamten Versuchsdauer. Die Aenderungen der Enzymaktivitaet waehrend des Wachstums stimmten gut ueberein mit den entsprechenden Aenderungen der taeglichen Wachstumstrate der subcutanen Fettgewebes. 相似文献

An experiment was carried out with young male New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits to establish live body weight changes, body measurements, body composition and sexual maturity as a function of feeding intensity. Animals in Group 1 ('AL', n = 10) were fed ad libitum, while those in Group 2 ('RS', n = 10) received restricted feeding corresponding to 70% of the ad libitum level. The starting liveweights were practically the same (0.907 +/- 0.146 and 0.911 +/- 0.147 kg in Group AL and Group RS, respectively). The feeding trial lasted from 6 to 22 weeks of age. The average body weight was significantly higher in Group AL from 7 to 22 weeks of age. At 22 weeks of age the body weight of RS rabbits was 85.64% of the weight of AL animals (3.22 +/- 0.52 kg and 3.76 +/- 0.33 kg, respectively). Average body weights of RS males at 8, 9, 11, 19 and 21 weeks of age were similar to those of ad libitum fed (AL) animals at 7, 8, 10, 15 and 16 weeks of age, respectively. The growth of bucks fed restricted tended to be allometric. The most significant difference was found at 16 and 18 weeks of age, while the lowest difference occurred at 6, 12, 15 and 19 weeks of age. It can be stated that low-intensity feeding up to slaughtering weight causes backwardness in rear cannon length and this backwardness remains also after the 15th week, which is well over the optimal slaughtering age. Based on the present data, the 70% restricted feeding cannot be recommended either for the future breeding bucks or for broiler males reared for slaughter. To determine the major chemical components of the body, rabbits were euthanised. Original dry matter and crude fat content of the body significantly (P < 0.05) decreased under restricted feeding (41.42%; 32.48% and 16.73%; 7.35%) while the percentage of protein within the dry matter increased (49.6%; 65.0%) and fat decreased (40.17%; 22.1%) significantly. Libido unambiguously decreases as a consequence of feed deprivation. The most conspicuous difference was found in the level of blood testosterone. Although a few RS bucks produced semen but only much later than the rabbits fed ad libitum. On the other hand, there was no difference in the motility of spermatozoa and ejaculate volume in comparison with AL animals. There was no relationship between the body fat content and the reproductive status of bucks in the present trial. 相似文献
