A 19‐year‐old Hackney pony was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for further investigation of left‐sided scrotal enlargement. Both testes were normally positioned within the scrotum and there was no pain on palpation. Ultrasonography revealed multiple masses of soft tissue echogenicity, located adjacent to the testicular parenchyma. They were hyperechoic when compared to the testicular parenchyma and affected both testes. Surgical excision was performed by closed castration. Gross examination revealed firm, white, nodular masses of varying size on the surface of both testes. The cut surface of individual masses had a dense, whorling, fibrous and somewhat shiny appearance. The histopathological diagnosis was bilateral, multicentric, well differentiated leiomyoma of the tunica albuginea. The smooth muscle origin was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining with an anti‐human monoclonal antibody reactive to smooth muscle actin. This is the first report of a bilateral, multicentric, leiomyoma in the testes of a horse confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. This case highlights that neoplasia should be considered as a differential for bilateral testicular enlargement.  相似文献

Leiomyomas are the most common of uterine tumours in mares but large tumours are rare. A case with a 15 cm uterine leiomyoma diagnosed by rectal palpation and ultrasound examinations with apparent adverse effects on fertility is reported. Management of the case was by hand assisted laparoscopic tumour removal and unilateral ovariectomy. Complications included post operative pain, tachycardia and wound infection. The mare was confirmed to be in foal after her first cover post surgery.  相似文献

A 15-year-old Thoroughbred gelding showjumper presented with colic after a history of chronic mild, intermittent colic. He was refractory to medical management. At surgery, he was found to have a 15-cm intramural mass in the distal jejunum, approximately 3 m orad to the ileum. Histopathology post-operatively revealed a leiomyoma. Leiomyomas in horses are rare. They have been reported most commonly in the reproductive tract, with other rare reports in the oesophagus and omentum. To the knowledge of the authors, there are no reports of identification and treatment of non-strangulating obstruction of the jejunum caused by a leiomyoma. The horse recovered from his surgery and went on to compete at the same level of showjumping as previous to the surgery with no further episodes of colic. Based on this report, leiomyoma should be a differential for small intestinal obstruction in the future.  相似文献

Scrotal enlargement is a problem in stallions that often leads to poor semen quality. Although there are many causes for scrotal enlargement, testicular neoplasia is often high on the differential list, especially in an aged stallion. This case report describes a stallion with scrotal enlargement caused by a rare neoplasia located in the tunica vaginalis, and not in the testicular parenchyma. Diagnosis of mesothelioma was made following hemicastration. Prognosis in other species is variable, but this stallion returned to his successful breeding career following treatment and has remained healthy one year following the diagnosis.  相似文献

The following case report documents the clinical presentation, ultrasonographic appearance, surgical management and outcome of a horse with a traumatic tear extending from the superficial and deep inguinal rings, across the aponeurosis of the external abdominal oblique muscle and inguinal ligament, disrupting the femoral ring, vascular lacuna and peritoneum. This subsequently resulted in fluid accumulation within the femoral canal. This unusual injury and presentation gives rise to discussion of the aetiology and nomenclature that should be used to properly describe this injury.  相似文献

Herniation of the urinary bladder in the inguinal region has not previously been described in the horse. A case of inguinal rupture with herniation of the bladder through the scrotal fascia in a 3‐month‐old Shetland pony, diagnosed by external palpation, urinary catheterisation and external ultrasonographic examination is reported. Surgical management of the case was by dissection of the scrotal fascia, partial cystectomy and unilateral castration. During the period of hospitalisation the only complication was a slight seroma, which resolved spontaneously. Follow‐up after 6 months did not reveal any abnormality.  相似文献

Complications following castration are a potential problem in equine practice. Intestinal evisceration is a life‐threatening condition requiring immediate correction. The following case report describes a rare condition associated with post castration evisceration in a 3‐year‐old Thoroughbred. Shortly after the eviscerated small intestine was repositioned in the abdomen, the horse showed signs of colic and at the second surgery a 4.5 m jejunal loop was found incarcerated in the femoral canal. After resection and anastomosis, the femoral canal was obliterated using large moistened gauze sponges. The horse made a complete recovery and returned to race training. The occurrence of femoral hernia, a condition fairly common in man, has been described but no clinical cases have been reported in horses. This is a severe, although rare, complication after castration.  相似文献

A 16‐year‐old Italian Saddle Horse gelding was referred for treatment of an incisional hernia that developed 7 months after a ventral midline laparotomy for treatment of acute abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed a hernia approximately 20 cm long and 15 cm wide on the ventral aspect of the abdomen. Ultrasonography revealed the dimensions of the hernia ring to be approximately 15 cm in length and 10 cm in width. A single‐port laparoscopic incisional hernia repair using an operating 0° laparoscope was performed with an appropriately sized (24 × 18 cm) piece of mesh fixed in place with simple interrupted transabdominal sutures. At 4 weeks post operatively, follow‐up physical examination and ultrasonography confirmed healing of the surgical site with no evidence of hernia recurrence. The same evaluation was done 6 months post operatively, and the horse returned to its previous level of activity 8 months post operatively. In horses, laparoscopic application of mesh should be considered among the treatment options for incisional hernia. In the present case, this technique was performed with a single port using an operative laparoscope, in contrast to the multiportal techniques reported previously. The case presented here demonstrates that single‐port laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is feasible, and allows proper placement of an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene intraperitoneal mesh in horses  相似文献

A 13‐year‐old pluriparous Dutch Warmblood mare presented to Utrecht University's Department of Equine Sciences 4 weeks after suspected abortion at 3.5 months gestation, to investigate the nature of a uterine mass and persistent vulval discharge. Transrectal ultrasonographic examination revealed copious flocculent fluid and fetal remnants within the uterus and a 5–6 cm heterogenous mass in the uterine wall at the tip of the right horn. Expulsion of fetal parts and resolution of the coexisting endometritis were effected by a combination of repeated PGF2a analogue injections to induce oestrus, application of PGE2 gel to aid cervical relaxation, and daily uterine lavage and antibiotic instillation. The presence of the mass in the uterine wall was confirmed by hysteroscopy and the suspected tumour subsequently removed by partial laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy under standing sedation and local anaesthesia. The histological appearance of the tumour was consistent with a leiomyoma or moderately malignant leiomyosarcoma. Although a follow‐up examination 6 months post surgery revealed uncomplicated healing of the uterus, the owner decided to retire the mare from breeding. Uterine neoplasia is an extremely unusual cause of fetal death in the mare but, in the present case, laparoscopic partial ovariohysterectomy proved a promising, minimally invasive technique for salvaging sufficient uterus to make subsequent breeding a realistic proposition.  相似文献

Internal abdominal hernias are an uncommon occurrence in the horse. Protrusion of an abdominal organ or viscus may occur through a normal or pathological aperture within the peritoneal cavity, and incarceration of bowel through such an opening may lead to a strangulating obstruction of the intestine, characterised by luminal blockage and concurrent vascular compromise. As such, entrapment of bowel in internal hernias can represent an important indication for colic surgery in the horse.  相似文献

Myxoid leiomyoma of the iris in a dog   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
A leiomyoma of the iris is described in an 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier. This is a rare primary intraocular tumor in dogs and we describe the clinical presentation, gross findings and histopathologic characteristics of this tumor. The diagnosis was made on the basis of light microscopy and immunohistochemical staining using antidesmin antibodies, which is specific for myogenic tissues. An unusual feature of the tumor was the presence of myxoid change. To our knowledge myxoid change has not been previously described in a primary intraocular leiomyoma.  相似文献

A 15-year-old domestic rock dove (Columbia livia) was presented to the Service de Médecine Zoologique of the Université de Montréal with a 10-day history of lethargy and chronic weight loss of 1-year duration. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the coelomic cavity revealed the presence of effusion and a well-defined mass containing variably sized hypoechoic nodules of unknown origin. Cytologic evaluation of fine-needle aspirates of the mass indicated a malignant epithelial tumor consisting of round cells arranged individually and in clusters, with large nuclei, prominent nucleoli, moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, atypical mitoses, occasional binucleation and multinucleation, and large numbers of ruptured cells. A diagnosis of seminoma was established on histologic sections obtained at necropsy. The cytologic features of this tumor were similar to those of canine seminomas except for the presence of lymphocytes, which were not observed in significant numbers in cytologic smears or histologic sections. Seminoma should be included in the differential diagnosis for a space-occupying mass causing organ displacement within the coelomic cavity of a male bird.  相似文献

Objective: To describe a unique case of pyometra with inguinal herniation of the left uterine horn and omentum. Case summary: A 7‐year‐old, 19 kg, intact female Beagle dog presented for surgical treatment of presumptive pyometra and biopsy of a caudal abdominal mass in the left inguinal mammary gland region. Ventral midline celiotomy was performed, and a distended, fluid‐filled uterus with passage of the distal aspect of the left uterine horn through the left vaginal process into the inguinal canal was identified. The patient recovered uneventfully following ovariohysterectomy and left inguinal herniorrhaphy. New or unique information provided: This is the first documented report of inguinal herniation of a uterine horn associated with a pyometra.  相似文献

A periocular neurofibrosarcoma was debulked and treated with intralesional cisplatin in a 5-year-old Thoroughbred mare. The horse presented with a 1-year history of a large slowly progressing subcutaneous mass over the right supraorbital process. The mass was surgically debulked, and intralesional cisplatin (1.0 mg/cm3) was injected in 3 doses at 2 weeks, 5 weeks, and 8 weeks postoperatively. No recurrence was noted over a 15-month follow-up period. Histopathology of the mass indicated neurofibrosarcoma.  相似文献
