Effects of temperature and duration of bulb storage on leaf emergence of scale bulblets and on the type of plant development were investigated in Lilium longiflorum ‘White American’. After the parent bulbs had been stored for 0, 5, 10 or 15 weeks at 30, 20, 10, or 0°C, scales collected from different parts of a bulb were scale-propagated at 25 or 14°C, or under the temperature regimes normally used in The Netherlands. Independently of the scale position, a higher storage temperature promoted leaf emergence from scale bulblets, whereas a lower temperature delayed it. Higher storage temperatures produced more epigeous type plants, especially from outer and middle scales. Sprouting of the parent bulb had no effect on leaf emergence from the scale bulblets nor on the type of plant development.  相似文献

Summary

The effects of different mean growing season temperatures and C02 concentrations during bulb production on postharvest bulb sprouting in a common storage environment at Reading, UK, was examined in two cultivars of the Rijnsburger type of onion (Allium cepa L.). Crops were grown in the field in temperature gradient tunnels maintained at either 374 or 532 ppm C02. At crop maturity, cohorts of bulbs were harvested, transferred to a constant temperature room (at an average of 11.6°C) and the subsequent duration to sprouting recorded. The duration to the onset of sprouting (expressed as days in storage until the first bulb sprouted) was not affected by cultivar, mean growing season temperature or CO2 concentration, and was 165 d. The subsequent rate of sprouting (expressed as bulbs per day) was a positive linear function of mean growing season temperature, but no effects of CO2 or cultivar were detected. Mean rate of sprouting increased from an average of 0.036 bulbs per day at 12.3°C to 0.093 bulbs per day at 18.6°C. Rapid sprouting in storage was associated with lower levels of total non-structural carbohydrate in the bulbs at the time of harvest. Thus, postharvest susceptibility of onion bulbs to sprouting in storage is expected to increase in warmer crop production temperatures.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted at two locations (Central Agricultural Station, CAS, Mon Repos, and Black Bush Polder) in Guyana, to evaluate carrot and onion cultivars for adaptability to the climatic conditions. Onion cultivars were tested for the production of dry bulbs as well as for the green tops.‘Chantenay Red Core’, ‘Improved Danvers-126’, ‘Nantes Strong Top’, ‘Nantesa Superior’, and ‘New Kuroda’ carrot produced average yields between 14 and 25 t/ha. Dry bulb yields of ‘Bermuda-986’, ‘Granex’, ‘Red Creole’, ‘San Felipe’, and ‘White Creole’ onion were lowest of all cultivars included in these trials. At the CAS, ‘Texas Grano-502’ and ‘White Alamo’ produced larger onion bulbs with average weights of 82 and 77 g, respectively. At Black Bush Polder ‘El Toro’ produced the largest onion bulbs with an average weight of 77 g. In storage, bulb losses for red onion cultivars, ‘Red Creole’, ‘Red Granex’, ‘Tropicana’, were lowest at all samplings during the 82 days storage period. White onions were most susceptible to loss in storage. Average losses of white onions were 33.3, 63.7, 74.6 and 86.2% at 21, 44, 55, and 82 days in storage, respectively. Storage losses for ‘White Creole’, which was an exception, were 11.1, 35.9, 46.4, and 57.0% for the above-mentioned storage durations respectively. Among four cultivars evaluated for green onion production, ‘Evergreen Bunching’ produced the highest yield (28.6 t/ha).  相似文献

Summary

The effects of photoperiod, light intensity and temperature on bulb formation and bulb structure of two tropical onion cultivars were investigated. From an initial experiment it was observed that the number of true scales and sheath scales differed significantly between the cultivars ‘Red Creole’ and ‘Agrifound Dark Red’. When these two cultivars were given 11, 12 and 13 h photoperiod treatments, it was found that both cultivars needed at least 12 h photoperiod for bulb formation. Modify the R/FR ratio from 1.22 to 1.16 in the final hour of the 11 h light period did not induce bulbing. The 13 h photoperiod increased the number of true scales and decreased the number of sheath scales compared with the 12 h photoperiod in both cultivars but total scale + leaf sheath numbers remained nearly constant. When onion plants were grown under 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% shading treatments, (12 h photoperiod), only plants receiving 0% and 25% shading bulbed. Low light intensity decreased the number of true scales and increased the number of sheath scales. Four temperature regimes were compared in a growth room experiment. Plants under the 29°348C treatment bulbed within two weeks and matured within six weeks. However, plants receiving the 25°308C treatment delayed bulb initiation more than those plants receiving 17°228C and 21°268C treatments. At the lowest temperature, bigger bulbs with thick necks were produced. This may be due to changes in bulb structure since at low temperature, the number of sheath scales was increased, however the number of true scales remained relatively constant in both cultivars. Dormant leaf initials decreased with decreasing temperature while the number of secondary meristems significantly increased. The results suggest that ‘Red Creole’ was more responsive to shorter photoperiods, bulbing earlier than ‘Agrifound Dark Red’. There was no significant difference in time to bulbing in response to temperature between the two cultivars if measured by bulbing ratio however there were differences in bulb structure which suggested that ‘Red Creole’ bulbed earlier. These effects may be due to the breeding histories of the two cultivars. It is suggested that studying bulb structure may provide a useful method of interpreting onion bulbing responses.  相似文献

Ethephon at 1 000 and 3 000 mg l?1 applied either on one occasion or three times at weekly intervals to two onion cultivars reduced average bulb weight and total yield by 14% to 67%. In cv Hygro the percentage of bull-neck bulbs was reduced by ethephon but cv Cepavon was unaffected. The number of bulbs sprouting in store was reduced in both cultivars by all ethephon treatments except the single 1000 mg l?1 application.  相似文献

Stem elongation of Lilium cultivars ‘Black Beauty’, ‘Jamboree’ and ‘Nutmegger’ was lessened by treating the bulbs with ancymidol (10 p.p.m.) or ethephon (500 p.p.m.). Ancymidol was the more effective inhibitor of stem elongation, although applied at a much lower concentration. Application of the growth regulators prior to a dormancy-breaking cold treatment provided more effective control of stem elongation than post cold-treatment application. The total number of flowers and the number of secondary flowers per stem of ‘Black Beauty’ and ‘Nutmegger’ were increased by treating the bulbs with ancymidol. However, unlike the optimal time for lessening stem elongation, enhancement of flower production was greatest when ancymidol was applied after completion of the cold treatment. Ethephon was unsatisfactory, since it inhibited flower production by ‘Black Beauty’ and ‘Nutmegger’, while ‘Jamboree’ was relatively insensitive to it, as indicated by a lack of inhibition of flower production and a small degree of inhibition of stem elongation.  相似文献

Production of bulblets from bulb scales of 12 Lilium Oriental hybrid clones indicated that an approximately threefold range in regenerative capacity existed within this group. The cultivar ‘Empress of India’ was the highest producer and provided 10 bulblets per bulb scale during a six-month period. This could provide an estimated yield of 500 bulblets per bulb. Propagation from bulb scales of most of the clones was equally effective with scales which were removed from the plants either immediately after cold treatment of the dormant bulbs, at the cessation of flowering, or at the cessation of growth of the aerial stems (post-senescence). Only ‘Empress of India’ and ‘American Eagle’ deviated, in that they produced fewer bulblets at the post senescence stage. When bulb scales were removed for propagation immediately after flowering, and treated with a combination of BAP and NAA (both 5 μM), bulblet production of the low producing clones was significantly increased, while that of the high producing ‘Empress of India’ was significantly decreased. These effects were less pronounced when the bulb scales were removed at the post-cold stage and virtually absent at the post senescence stage.  相似文献

Plant height at flowering was reduced in Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb. cultivar ‘Nellie White’) by momentarily dipping the bulbs in 100 or 264 mg l?1 solutions of ancymidol [α-cyclopropyl-α-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol] prior to planting. The number of flowers was unaffected, and days to flower increased slightly at the highest concentration. This method of application is more effective than soil drench and foliarspray applications.  相似文献

The aim of the Pillnitz apple breeding is to combine improvements in fruit quality + yield + resistance to different pathogens in new cultivars. Early-, mid- and late-season apple cultivars were selected in two series, Pi- and Re-cultivars?. The Re-cultivars? guarantee a high degree of resistance. Triple and multiple resistant cultivars were selected with resistance to scab, mildew and fire blight: ‘Remo®’, ‘Regia®’, ‘Rewena®’ and ‘Rebella®’. ‘Rebella®’ was found to have resistance also to bacterial canker, red spider mite and abiotic damages. The cultivars are the base for a new growing management in integrated and organic cultivation. Doubtless, the Pillnitz resistance breeding conception is a success, even if some problems remain to solved in the future. Various degrees of scab infection on Vf-resistant cultivars had been observed since 1984 in Central Europe. No infections were found in cultivars with other genes like V f such as ‘Reglindis®’ (V A), ‘Reka’ (V r), or ‘Regia®’ (V r). New sources are necessary for resistance breeding, especially for pyramiding of resistance genes. However, if the V f-gene is overcome, new resistance sources and cultivars with two or more different sources of resistance to stabilize healthiness in the field will be required in the future. More explanation and advertisement about the value of resistant cultivars to promote the cultivation in commercial orchards is needed.  相似文献

Bulbs of Tulipa gesneriana L. ‘Prominence’ were either specially pre-cooled at 5 ± 0.5°C or held at 17 ± 0.5°C in a flow-through system equipped for atmospheric sampling. Bulbs at 17°C had low CO2 and C2H4 production rates until January when they began to increase. An initial peak of C2H4 production occurred during the 2nd week of pre-cooling, followed by a major increase after 12 weeks. In addition, bulbs were specially pre-cooled for periods of 2–16 weeks (2-week increments). The bulbs were then transferred to 17 ± 0.5°C, where initial periods of special pre-cooling of greater than 12 weeks resulted in a dramatic increase in respiration rate over bulbs cooled for less than 12 weeks. These increases in C2H4 and CO2 liberation appeared to be related to completion of the bulb cold-requirement. However, no surge of shoot elongation occurred after 12 weeks of pre-cooling and transfer to 17°C.  相似文献

Summary

The effect of cultivar and temperature on the temporal pattern of starch occurrence in the primary thickening meristem (PTM) of onion (Allium cepa L. var. cepa) bulbs was studied. Bulbs of four cultivars differing in their sprouting behaviour in dry storage were analysed during bulb development for the concentration of starch in the PTM and inner sprout growth by histochemical analysis and determination of leaf ratio, respectively. Generally, in all cultivars the concentration of starch in the PTM was high during active growth, decreased to a low value during sprout dormancy, and increased before or concomitant with inner sprouting. The duration of the low starch period varied between cultivars. If onions were stored at low (18C), intermediate (158C), or high (308C) temperature, inner sprouting was delayed at low and high temperature compared with the intermediate temperature, whereas starch increased before sprouting at low and intermediate temperature, but became undetectable at high temperature. Moreover, if benzyladenine was injected into onions stored at high temperature, sprouting was readily induced, but starch in the PTM remained undetectable and no root initiation occurred. Since the PTM is not only responsible for the stem thickening but also for root initiation we conclude (i) that low starch in the PTM primarily indicates root dormancy and only indirectly sprout dormancy, and (ii) that high temperature-imposed sprout dormancy is actually based on root dormancy.  相似文献

Young segments of flower pedicels of the Chrysanthemum morifolium cultivars ‘Super Yellow’ and ‘Bravo’ regenerated rapidly high numbers of adventitious shoots in vitro. The influence of the explant-length, growth regulators, sugar, vitamins and minerals on adventitious shoot formation of both cultivars was examined. 11 cultivars, representing several important groups of cultivars, produced adventitious shoots on the same basic medium. Small shoots were separated and transferred to different media in vivo or in vitro for the initiation of adventitious roots and the consequent production of plantlets. The significance of this method for vegetative propagation, storage and mutation breeding is discussed.  相似文献

The growth, development and mineral contents of 3 cultivars of amarant (Amaranthus cruentus L.), ‘Large Leaf’, ‘Light Red’ and ‘Local Green’, were compared in a greenhouse study. There were small differences between the cultivars for the development per plant of leaf area, number of branches, number of nodes, and dry-weight production of stems, roots, inflorescences and most especially leaves at the edible stage. The 3 cultivars produced edible shoots between 5 and 7 weeks. There were, however, significant differences in the mineral content of the cultivars, in the order ‘Local Green’ > ‘Large Leaf’ > ‘Light Red’, for the concentrations of nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese. It is concluded that, although the 3 cultivars matured at the same time, ‘Local Green’ was the most nutritive as to mineral contents.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate onion accessions regarding their resistance to Thrips tabaci Lindeman, in order to enable the development of cultivars that are resistant to this pest. The experiments were carried out without chemical control, in a randomized block design with three replications, in Petrolina, PE and Juazeiro, BA. Six evaluations of thrips populations were carried out starting 15 days after transplanting, each one after 7 days. Simple correlations were estimated among all variables. Statistical differences were observed for the number of adults in different evaluations, while the number of nymphs showed no statistical differences. The largest average yields of commercial bulbs were observed for ‘Vale Ouro IPA 11?, ‘BRS Alfa São Francisco’, ‘Franciscana IPA 10? and ‘Sirius F1? while ‘Red Creole’, ‘Creole Mercosul’ and ‘Conquista’ had the lowest yield. The bulb commercial yield had simple negative correlations with nymph degree of infestation (DI) in the four evaluation phases and adult DIs at 22 days. Negative correlations between commercial bulb yield and central angle of the plant were observed, indicating that plants with higher bulb yield have a lower angle of the central leaves. The results of the study suggest that the resistance mechanism is due mainly to tolerance to the pest.  相似文献

The effect of gibberellic acid, GA3, on the growth and flowering of hyacinth cultivars ‘Pink Pearl’, ‘Delft Blue’ and ‘Carnegie’, chilled in a cold room at 5°C or a garden frame for 28, 42 or 81 days, and either rooted or dry, unrooted, was investigated. GA, was applied to the basal plates of the bulbs in a lanolin paste on 10 October 1975.The growth of the inflorescence and leaves of plants originating from dry-chilled bulbs was generally the same as that of those grown from rooted plants. A similar response to GA3 treatment was observed in all cultivars. Treatment of bulbs with GA3 decreased the number of days to flowering, stimulated the growth of inflorescences and leaves, and its effect was most pronounced in the plants chilled for shorter periods.  相似文献

Glasshouse grown ‘Ace’ and ‘Nellie White’ Easter lily plants were subjected to different temperature regimes to determine temperature requirements during pre- and post-bloom development. Rate of leaf- and flower-bud development and stem elongation on the primary (mother) axis were directly proportional to the range of temperatures used (6–24°C), and were equally effective in predicting crop development. Scale initiation on the secondary (daughter) axis during pre-bloom phases was proportional to growing temperature, reaching maximum activity at 18°C in ‘Ace’ and at 12°C in ‘Nellie White’. The shift from scale to leaf initiation and development following anthesis was favored by 12 rather than 18°C with significant reductions in leaf initiation in both cultivars at 24°C. No difference in secondary meristem diameter occurred with temperature during pre-bloom, but large dome size was associated with 12°C or lower during the post-bloom phase. Primary scale weight increase (filling), reached a maximum 50 days following anthesis, and was greatest at 18°C. Secondary scale filling reached a maximum 80 days after anthesis at both 18 and 24°C. The secondary axis became increasingly responsive to sprout-inducing temperatures with increasing age and development. Fifty days after anthesis, 12 and 18°C were equally effective in sprouting ‘Ace’ bulbs, while 12°C was more effective with ‘Nellie White’. Early leaf senescence, associated with high (24°C) temperature, did not favor increased bulb size, daughter leaf primordia count and meristem diameter, or sprouting.  相似文献

Vegetation in urban areas provides benefits to people, which are increasingly assessed and valued as ecosystem services (ESS). The regulation of the urban microclimate is one of these services, since trees have the potential to reduce urban heat loads by evapotranspiration and shading. Simultaneously, it has been suggested that trees from dry habitats should be used to cope with the increasing risks of drought under climate change in Central Europe. The underlying properties that enable those trees to reduce dependence on the environment, however, are assumed to come at the expense of biomass production and water loss. In the potentially conflicted area between drought tolerance and ESS we compared water consumption, water-use efficiency (WUE), crown structure and growth of six roadside species/cultivars, which are assumed to vary in drought tolerance, due to differing resource supplies in their native habitats. Acer platanoides, Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’, and Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’ were compared with Acer campestre, Ostrya carpinifolia, and Tilia tomentosa ‘Brabant’, the latter presumably being less water-demanding. Measurements took place in the municipal nursery of Munich during summer 2016.Surprisingly, the less water-demanding species/cultivars exhibited on average 1.24 times higher values of maximum daily sap flux density and up to seven times higher growth rates, both contributing to higher WUE. Scaled to leaf level, however, their mean daily transpiration rates were on average lower (0.21 and 0.31 kg H2O m−2 d−1, respectively). They also showed higher flexibility in response to changing weather with increased growth and transpiration under favorable conditions in early summer, but a more conservative water use in dry late summer. The results suggest that these species/cultivars tend to regulate their water use stronger under increasing dryness, whereas canopy size and leaf amount are still the main important determinants of species and cultivar differences in water use.  相似文献

The effect of gibberellic acid, GA3, on breaking of dormancy, sprouting and flowering of 9 cultivars of tulips was investigated, using 4 cultivars recommended for forcing and 5 not suitable for forcing. GA3 was applied to the basal plates of the bulbs in a lanolin paste before planting, or was injected into the bulbs prior to rooting or after 38 or 64 days of cold treatment. The application of GA3 stimulated sprouting, growth of floral stalks and flowering in all investigated cultivars. Injection of GA3 was more effective than topical application. The effect of GA3 on sprouting and flowering of plants was especially effective after 38 or 64 days of cold treatment. The possibility of applying GA3 in commercial horticulture is considered.  相似文献

The effects of planting densities on the development and yield of tulip bulbs were studied for the cultivar ‘Lustige Witwe’ (planting size 8–9 cm, type A) in two successive growing seasons. The total number of lifted bulbs decreased with increasing density due to shrivelling of certain buds. The shrivelling started at the time of anthesis, mainly in the buds in the axils of the outermost bulb scales. At densities between 5 × 5 and 12 × 12 cm plant?1 the relative growth rate (Rw) decreased with increasing density. A difference in the Rw values between the two seasons was probably partly caused by differences in the stocks used for the experiments. The highest weight increase was found at a density of 214 bulbs m?2 in 1969 and 229 bulbs m?2 in 1970.  相似文献
