Purpose

The purpose of this study was to elucidate historical trends, spatial variations, and the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in several Japanese lakes.

Materials and methods

The vertical distributions of PAHs in the core samples of sediments taken at several points in lakes Kasumigaura, Suwa, Kizaki, and Shinji were determined using a gas chromatograph equipped with a mass selective detector and combined with chronological information and the physical/elemental properties of the sediment.

Results and discussion

Seventeen related compounds (congeners) typically had concentration peaks at sediment depths corresponding to the 1960s to 1970s. In Lake Shinji and one bay of Lake Kasumigaura, there was a tendency for PAH concentrations to increase downstream; in contrast, another bay of Lake Kasumigaura showed the reverse trend. During big flood events, the fluxes of PAHs increased due to large inputs of particulate matter, although PAH concentrations were reduced. For the four study lakes and other similar lakes, PAH concentrations of surface sediments were approximately proportional to population densities in the respective watersheds, while the total input of PAHs to the lakes were correlated with their population and watershed area. The source apportionment analysis using isomer ratios for the congener profiles indicated that the principal sources of the PAHs in the lake sediments were gasoline and/or diesel engine exhausts and biomass burning.

Conclusions

The observed concentration peaks showed a deterioration of the chemical quality of atmospheric conditions around 1960?C1970 and a recent tendency for their amelioration. Between-lake differences suggest that the influence of human activity in the watersheds influences sediment PAH concentrations. The PAH sources were identified to be of pyrogenic origin.  相似文献

Purpose

Nitrate (NO 3 ? ) is often considered to be removed mainly through microbial respiratory denitrification coupled with carbon oxidation. Alternatively, NO 3 ? may be reduced by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria using sulfide as an electron donor. The aim of this study was to quantify the NO 3 ? reduction process with sulfide oxidation under different NO 3 ? input concentrations in river sediment.

Materials and methods

Under NO 3 ? input concentrations of 0.2 to 30?mM, flow-through reactors filled with river sediment from the Pearl River, China, were used to measure the processes of potential NO 3 ? reduction and sulfate (SO 4 2? ) production. Molecular biology analyses were conducted to study the microbial mechanisms involved.

Results and discussion

Simultaneous NO3 ? removal and SO4 2? production were observed with the different NO 3 ? concentrations in the sediment samples collected at different depths. Potentially, NO 3 ? removal reached 72 to 91?% and SO 4 2? production rates ranged from 0.196 to 0.903?mM?h?1. The potential NO 3 ? removal rates were linearly correlated to the NO 3 ? input concentrations. While the SO 4 2? production process became stable, the NO 3 ? reduction process was still a first-order reaction within the range of NO 3 ? input concentrations. With low NO 3 ? input concentrations, the NO 3 ? removal was mainly through the pathway of dissimilatory NO 3 ? reduction to NH 4 + , while with higher NO 3 ? concentrations the NO 3 ? removal was through the denitrification pathway.

Conclusions

While most of NO 3 ? in the sediment was reduced by denitrifying heterotrophs, sulfide-driven NO 3 ? reduction accounted for up to 26?% of the total NO 3 ? removal under lower NO 3 ? concentrations. The vertical distributions of NO 3 ? reduction and SO 4 2? production processes were different because of the variable bacterial communities with depth.  相似文献

A simple method is presented and used to estimate the portions of SO inf4 sup2? and NO inf? sup3 that contribute to the strong acidity in weekly precipitation samples collected at three NADP sites in the eastern United States. The method assumes that, in general, the difference between SO inf4 sup2? and NH inf+ sup4 represents acidic sulfate and the difference between NO inf? sup3 and soil-derived materials (the sum of Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+) represents acidic nitrate. Acidic sulfate and nitrate are considered to be the predominant source of H+ (determined from laboratory pH) in the weekly precipitation samples. Most of the acidity for all three sites was attributed to acidic sulfate. The highest fraction of acidic SO inf4 sup2? to H+ wet deposition values was for the east-central Tennessee site (0.95) and the northeastern Illinois site (0.90), and the lowest fraction occurred at the central Pennsylvania site (0.75). The Tennessee site had the greatest acidic fraction of sulfate (0.84) and the Pennsylvania site had the greatest acidic fraction of nitrate (0.59).  相似文献

Purpose

Few studies have examined the effects of biochar on nitrification of ammonium-based fertilizer in acidic arable soils, which contributes to NO3 ? leaching and soil acidification.

Materials and methods

We conducted a 42-day aerobic incubation and a 119-day weekly leaching experiment to investigate nitrification, N leaching, and soil acidification in two subtropical soils to which 300 mg N kg?1 ammonium sulfate or urea and 1 or 5 wt% rice straw biochar were applied.

Results and discussion

During aerobic incubation, NO3 ? accumulation was enhanced by applying biochar in increasing amounts from 1 to 5 wt%. As a result, pH decreased in the two soils from the original levels. Under leaching conditions, biochar did not increase NO3 ?, but 5 wt% biochar addition did reduce N leaching compared to that in soils treated with only N. Consistently, lower amounts of added N were recovered from the incubation (KCl-extractable N) and leaching (leaching plus KCl-extractable N) experiments following 5 wt% biochar application compared to soils treated with only N.

Conclusions

Incorporating biochar into acidic arable soils accelerates nitrification and thus weakens the liming effects of biochar. The enhanced nitrification does not necessarily increase NO3 ? leaching. Rather, biochar reduces overall N leaching due to both improved N adsorption and increased unaccounted-for N (immobilization and possible gaseous losses). Further studies are necessary to assess the effects of biochar (when used as an addition to soil) on N.  相似文献

Survey data from approximately 2,900 Ontario lakes were used to examine the distribution of 12 fish species with respect to lake pH. Yellow perch (Perca flavescens), white sucker (Catostomus commersoni), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) and redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos) proved to be tolerant of low pH (pH <6.4). Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), common shiner (Notropis cornutus), blacknose shiner (Notropis heterolepis), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) and northern pike (Esox lucius) showed limited distribution in low pH lakes (pH <6.4). The limited distribution of lake whitefish and northern pike likely relates to zoogeographic factors rather than their intolerance to low pH. Lake trout and common shiner occur in lakes susceptible to, and receiving high loadings of acidic deposition. However, without historical data, we cannot determine if their decreased distribution in low pH systems is due to intolerance to low pH.  相似文献

The lakes investigated ranged widely in pH (3.6–6.3), total phosphorus (3.3–33.1 μg.L-1) and calcium (0.352-6.30 mq.L-1). Several macroinvertebrate groups especially Pelecypoda, Hirudinea and Gastropoda do not occur in lakes of low pH (<5.0). The bivalve Pisidium sp. occurred in one acidic lake (pH 5.2). Apparently, this is the lowest pH occurrence for Pisidium sp. at such low calcium levels (0.35 mg.L-1). Macroinvertebrate richness was reduced with increased levels of acidity but nutrient availability apparently controlled macroinvertebrate abundance and biomass in the lakes.  相似文献

Purpose

In lake restoration, the redox sensitivity of iron (Fe)?Cphosphorus (P) compounds has been regarded as detrimental for a sustainable increase in sedimentary P retention since developing low redox potentials release Fe-bound P. Thus, Fe salts alone have rarely been used successfully to inactivate sediment P, and there are no studies on the long-term effects of in-lake Fe applications on P retention. Here, we analyzed for how long, and how efficiently, a single and continuous Fe application can affect the P budget of lakes.

Materials and methods

Two aerated lakes in Berlin, Germany were compared: Lake Tegel (TEG) experienced a continuous Fe supply via its tributaries, while Lake Gro?-Glienicke (GGS) was treated once with Fe in the winter of 1992/1993. By controlling the operation of aerators, their effectiveness on P exchange at the sediment?Cwater interface (non-aerated vs. aerated) was directly compared in spring and autumn between 2008 and 2010. The amount of P controllable by aeration (P control) was experimentally determined by non-aerated vs. aerated sediment cores (at 10 and 16?°C). Core stratigraphy of Fe was observed by high-resolution ??X-ray fluorescence analysis.

Results and discussion

In TEG, the mobility of Fe was limited due to its sulfidic fixation, and thus Fe only accumulated slightly at the sediment surface (Fe/P ratio, ??3). P control corresponded to only 4?% of the P content of the lake and 18?% of P loading. Hence, aeration only slightly influenced trophy-relevant epilimnetic P. In GGS, the single Fe application still ensures a high P binding ability of sediment since Fe relocated towards the surface (Fe/P ratio, ??7). P control corresponded to 38?% of the P content of the lake and 74?% of annual P loading. Thus, the P release is not relevant for the P supply to the epilimnion since with the lake??s overturn P is co-precipitated by the hypolimnetically accumulated Fe.

Conclusions

When external P loading is sufficiently reduced, as in GGS, amendments to Fe precipitants can increase sediment P retention in a redox-dependent manner over the long term. Thus, the redox-dependent mobility of Fe should no longer be regarded as a disadvantage of Fe-containing precipitants. To compensate for co-precipitation and complexation of Fe with sediment organic matter, a high Fe dosage (??200?g?m?2) is needed.  相似文献

Purpose

Nitrogen reduction in a eutrophic river canal using bioactive multilayer capping (BMC) with biozeolite and sand was examined through laboratory incubation experiments over 121 days.

Materials and methods

Biofilm formation on zeolite was cultivated by a mixed culture containing isolated heterotrophic nitrifiers (Bacillus sp.) and aerobic denitrifiers (Acinetobacter sp.). Two combination methods of biozeolite and sand (with two grain sizes) were used in the experiments: combination I had biozeolite on top of sand, while combination II had sand on top of biozeolite.

Results and discussion

BMC not only completely inhibited ammonium release from sediment but also reduced total nitrogen (TN) in the overlying water and sediment. On day 24, the reduction efficiencies of TN in overlying water by BMC were 60–82 %. After day 24, the long-term effectiveness of nitrogen reduction by BMC using combination II was found to be significantly better than that using combination I. Fine sand used for BMC was found to be superior to coarse sand in nitrogen reduction. Fine sand on the upper layer could strengthen biological denitrification of the biozeolite layer. The optimal BMC could reduce the amount of biozeolite and thus the costs of the technique. The TN reduction efficiency of sediment by the optimal BMC was up to 13 %.

Conclusions

BMC with biozeolite under the fine sand was found to be a feasible technique to reduce N in a eutrophic river canal.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of P in saline Spolic Technosols flooded with eutrophic water, with and without plant rhizosphere, in order to assess the role of these soils as sinks or sources of this nutrient.

Materials and methods

Samples were taken from basic (pH?~7.8), carbonated and acidic (pH?~6.2), de-carbonated soils of salt marshes polluted by mine wastes. Three treatments were assayed: pots with Sarcocornia fruticosa, pots with Phragmites australis and pots without plants (bare soil). The pots were flooded for 15?weeks with eutrophic water (PO 4 3? ~6.92?mg?L?1) and pH, Eh and water-soluble organic carbon and PO 4 3? concentrations were monitored in the soil solution. A soil P fractionation was applied before and after the flooding period.

Results and discussion

The PO 4 3? concentration in the soil solution decreased rapidly in both soils, with and without plant, being diminished by 80?C90?% after 3?h of flooding. The Fe/Mn/Al oxides and the Ca/Mg compounds played an important role in soil P retention. In pots with S. fruticosa, the reductive conditions due to flooding induced P release from metal oxides and P retention to Ca/Mg compounds. In turn, P. australis may have favoured the release of P from carbonates, which was transferred to Fe/Mn/Al compounds.

Conclusions

The retention of P by the soil was the main mechanism involved in the removal of PO 4 3? from the eutrophic flooding water but to evaluate the capacity of these systems as long-term P sinks, the combined effect of metals, Ca/Mg compounds and specific plant species should be considered.  相似文献

Purpose

Few studies have described the bacterial community structures of turbid rivers. In this paper, the characteristics of the bacterial community in the water and surface sediment of the Yellow River, China, the largest turbid river in the world, were studied.

Materials and methods

Water and sediment samples were collected from six sites along the river. Bacterial community composition was determined using the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene clone library technique. The relationship between environmental parameters and bacterial diversity was analyzed.

Results and discussion

A total of 1,131 gene sequences were obtained and clustered into 639 operational taxonomic units (at the 97 % identity level), with Proteobacteria as the predominant phylum. The Shannon index for water samples ranged from 3.39 to 4.40 and was generally higher than that in other rivers; this was probably due to the high suspended particulate sediment (SPS) concentration in the Yellow River, which can provide more habitats for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Also, the bacterial diversity of the water samples was slightly higher than that of the surface sediment samples. The bacterial diversity of water increased along the river in the downstream direction, while there was no trend for the sediment. Redundancy analysis indicated that pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and SPS were the main factors controlling the water bacterial community in the Yellow River, and pH, nitrate–nitrogen, and water content were the main factors for the surface sediment bacterial community.

Conclusions

This study indicated that the bacterial diversity of the Yellow River is generally higher than that in other rivers, suggesting that SPS plays an important role in regulating bacterial diversity and community structure in aquatic environments.  相似文献

Purpose

Hydroxyl ion release by maize (Zea mays L.) roots under acidic conditions was investigated with a view to develop a bioremediation method for ameliorating acid soils in tropical and subtropical regions.

Materials and methods

Two hydroponic culture experiments and one pot experiment were conducted: pH, nitrogen state, and rhizobox condition, which investigated the effects of different nitrogen forms on hydroxyl release by maize roots under acidic conditions.

Results and discussion

The pH of the culture solution increased as culture time rose. The gradient of change increased with rising NO3 ?/NH4 + molar ratios. Maize roots released more hydroxyl ions at pH 4.0 than at pH 5.0. The amount of hydroxyl ions released by maize roots at a constant pH was greater than those at a nonconstant pH. Application of calcium nitrate reduced exchangeable acidity and increased the pH in an Ultisol rhizosphere, compared with bulk soil. The increasing magnitude of soil pH was greater at higher doses of N. The absorption of NO3 ?–N increased as the NO3 ?/NH4 + molar ratios rose, which was responsible for hydroxyl ion release and pH increases in culture solutions and rhizosphere.

Conclusions

Root-induced alkalization in the rhizosphere resulting from nitrate absorption by maize plants can be used to ameliorate acidic Ultisols.  相似文献

Purpose

Determining the dynamics of silicon in lakes, one of the essential nutrients for diatoms, is valuable for understanding aquatic environmental problems. The dissolved silicon (DSi) and biogenic silicon (BSi) budgets in Lake Kasumigaura, a shallow eutrophic lake in Japan, during the last three decades were assessed based on the analysis of dated sediment cores and a water quality database.

Materials and methods

Sediment cores (100?cm long) were taken at the center of Lake Kasumigaura in 2005, 2007, and 2009 and at two other sites in 2007. BSi contents of the dated sediments were determined by wet alkaline digestion. The net sedimentation rates of BSi were defined as the difference between the DSi load from inflowing rivers and the DSi and BSi loads from the outflow of the lake, calculated using DSi concentrations and diatom abundances in the lake from 1980 to 2007 and DSi concentrations of the inflowing rivers during 1994, 2007, and 2009. The gross sedimentation rates of BSi were estimated by multiplying BSi concentrations in lake water by the diatom sinking rate reported by previous studies.

Results and discussion

Budgetary calculations based on the database showed that 60?C70?% of DSi inputs from the inflowing rivers during the 27?years could ultimately be accumulated as diatom frustules in bottom sediments in the lake. The sediment analysis revealed that the amount of BSi accumulated in the lake from 1980 to 2007 was 2.0?C2.6?×?1011?g, similar to the amount based on the database of 1.3?C2.4?×?1011?g. Although the gross sedimentation rates of BSi likely increased, the net sedimentation rates of BSi decreased significantly from 6?C10?×?109?g?year?1 in the 1980s to 2?C6?×?109?g?year?1 in the 2000s, suggesting a fast recycling of BSi in recent years caused by an increase in sediment resuspension and regeneration.

Conclusions

The sediment core information and the water quality database can be used for calculating the long-term silicon budgets in Lake Kasumigaura. An increase in the DSi release rates was identified, which is consistent with recent sediment resuspension. Comparing the sediment core information with the database suggests the long-term dissolution of sediment BSi; however, analysis of the BSi content in sediment cores representing a much longer time period is needed to confirm this.  相似文献

Purpose

Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the potential for metal (Cu, Ni and Zn) and herbicide (simazine, atrazine and diuron) release from agricultural soil and dredged sediment in managed realignment sites following tidal inundation.

Materials and methods

Column microcosm and batch sorption experiments were carried out at low (5?practical salinity units, psu) and high (20?psu) salinity to evaluate the changes in the partitioning of metals and herbicides between the soil/sediment and the aqueous phase, and the release of metals and herbicides from soil/sediment to the overlying water column.

Results and discussion

For both the metals and herbicides, the highest contaminant loads were released from the sediment within the first 24?h of inundation suggesting that any negative impacts to overlying water quality in a managed realignment scheme will be relatively short term following tidal inundation of soil and sediment. The release of metals was found to be dependent on a combination of salinity effects and the strength of binding of the metals to the soil and sediment. In the case of the herbicides, salinity impacted on their release. Particulate organic carbon was found to control the binding and release of the herbicides, highlighting the importance of assessing soil and sediment organic matter content when planning managed realignment sites.

Conclusions

Our research demonstrates that metals and herbicides may be released from contaminated sediments and agricultural soils during initial periods of flooding by seawater in managed realignment sites.  相似文献

Purpose

The sorption behavior of the herbicide 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) to three different artificial soil mixtures was investigated. Artificial soils serve as model systems for improving understanding of sorption phenomena.

Materials and methods

The soils consisted of quartz, ferrihydrite, illite, montmorillonite, and charcoal. In a previous study, several selected mixtures had been inoculated with organic matter, and microbial aging (incubation) had been performed for different periods of time (3, 12, and 18?months) before conducting the sorption experiments. The effect of this pre-incubation time on the sorption behavior was determined. Interaction of MCPA with soil surfaces was monitored by aqueous phase sorption experiments, using high-performance liquid chromatography/ultraviolet and in selected cases Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy.

Results and discussion

The sorption behavior showed large differences between differently aged soils; Freundlich and linear sorption model fits (with sorption constants K f , 1/n exponents, and K d values, respectively) were given for pH?=?3 and the unbuffered pH of ??7. The largest extent of sorption from diluted solutions was found on the surfaces with a pre-incubation time of 3?months. Sorption increased at acidic pH values.

Conclusions

Regarding the influence of aging of artificial soils, the following conclusions were drawn: young artificial soils exhibit stronger sorption at lower concentrations, with a larger K f value than aged soils. A correlation with organic carbon content was not confirmed. Thus, the sorption characteristics of the soils are more influenced by the aging of the organic carbon than by the organic carbon content itself.  相似文献

Purpose

Many drainage basins are terminal recipients of hydrophobic contaminants such as pesticides. To minimize adverse effects of the contaminated sediments on wildlife, it is important to understand sediment contamination patterns. This study was conducted at the Salton Sea, which is a heavily polluted large lake in southern California, USA, with the purpose to identify areas with minimal contamination so as to support species conservation.

Materials and methods

We investigated the horizontal and vertical distribution of 14 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 12 currently used pesticides (CUPs) in playas at locations near the drainage outfalls. The data were subjected to spatial analysis using Kriging interpolation and converted to contour maps. Statistical comparisons were made among different areas, between different sediment depths, and between air-exposed and submerged sediments.

Results and discussion

Various OCPs were found near two drainage inlets, with mean concentrations of 6?C30???g?kg?1 in air-exposed sediments and 3?C18???g?kg?1 in submerged sediments. Chlordane (detected frequency, DF?=?77?%) and DDT derivatives (DF?=?100?%) were among the most frequently detected OCP. Significantly higher concentrations were found in air-exposed sediments than in submerged sediments, and in subsurface sediments than in surface sediments (P?<?0.01), suggesting historical deposition and burial. Sediments at many locations exceeded the threshold levels for DDE. A total of seven CUPs were detected with the maximum ??CUPs concentration of up to 27???g?kg?1. Bifenthrin was the dominant CUP contaminant, representing more than 60?% of ??CUPs for most samples with the highest concentration of 26???g?kg?1.

Conclusions

Findings from this study provide a snapshot of the spatial distribution in both horizontal and vertical directions of hydrophobic pesticides in a drainage-dominated lake, and such information and the method of investigation may be used for identifying areas of minimal contamination as alternative habitats for this and other impacted lakes.  相似文献

Purpose

A laboratory incubation under constant temperature and humidity was conducted to estimate the impacts of nitrogen (N) fertilizers on the acidification of two acid soils (Plinthudult and Paleudalfs) in south China.

Materials and methods

The experiment had three treatments, i.e., control (CK), addition of urea (U), and addition of ammonium sulfate (AS). We measured soil pH, nitrate (NO3 ?), ammonium (NH4 +), exchangeable hydrogen ion (H+), and aluminum ion (Al3+) concentrations at various intervals during the 90 days of incubation. Soil buffering capacity (pHBC) was also measured at the end of the experiment.

Results and discussion

The application of N fertilizers resulted in soil acidification. The U treatment caused greater acidification of the Plinthudult soil than the AS treatment, while there were no differences between U and AS treatments on the acidification of the Paleudalfs. At the end of the trial, the pHBC of Plinthudult in AS treatment was greater than that in CK and U treatments, which may be due to the buffering system of NH4 + and NH4OH. However, the pHBC of Paleudalfs was unchanged between treatments. The dynamics of exchangeable H+ and Al3+ corresponded to that of soil pH. Correlation analysis showed that both soil exchangeable H+ and soil exchangeable Al3+ were significantly related to soil pH.

Conclusions

Application of urea and ammonium sulfate caused acidification in both soils and increased soil exchangeable Al3+ and H+ concentrations in the Paleudalfs. The application of urea increased exchangeable Al3+, and ammonium sulfate increased pHBC in the Plinthudult.  相似文献

Purpose

Sediment resuspension is among the most widely cited concerns that lead to restricted dredging timeframes. Protection of fish species is a primary concern regarding the effects of dredging operations, yet experimental data establishing thresholds for uncontaminated suspended sediment effects are largely lacking. We conducted research to determine suspended sediment effects on walleye (Sander vitreus) egg hatching success and gross morphology following exposures mimicking sediment resuspension during dredging operations.

Materials and methods

Newly spawned eggs of northern and southern walleye strains were continuously exposed for 3?days to suspended sediment concentrations of 0, 100, 250, and 500?mg?l?1, using sediment from Maumee Bay, OH, USA. These concentrations spanned the range measured in the vicinity of dredging operations in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

Results and discussion

Northern and southern strain egg hatching rates were 53% and 39% of exposed eggs and 82% and 74% of viable eggs exposed, which are within reported ranges for this species. Data indicated no statistically significant effects of suspended sediment on hatching success. Gross morphological observations of exposed fry yielded no evidence of detrimental effects.

Conclusions

Experimental results indicated that walleye eggs are relatively tolerant to exposures likely to be encountered at dredging projects as performed in the Great Lakes region. Our results suggest that, given detailed knowledge of dredging project site-specific conditions and the mode of dredging to be used, better informed decisions can be made regarding adequate protective management practices. In many cases, flexibility could be given to the dredging contractor while maintaining a very low probability of risk to walleye spawning habitat.  相似文献

To establish the impact of acidity on fish populations, studies were conducted in 37 Québec lakes located in four regions; the réserve des Laurentides and Portneuf and the Charlevoix and Témiscamingue regions. Density (catch per unit effort) of brook chary (Salvelinus fontinalis) decreases with increasing acidity. Moreover, in the Charlevoix region, this species has disappeared from three acid lakes (4.6 ?pH?5.l) with low Ca levels. Unlike growth, condition demonstrates a close relationship to acidity in brook charr populations. The total Al concentration in gills decreases with increasing size and pH. Lake acidity and sensitivity to acidification introduces problems in gamefish management. A survey of 17 lakes of the Témiscamingue region reveals that species diversity and total fish biomass are much lower in acid lakes than non acid lakes. In addition, two acid lakes are devoid of fish. Cyprinidae and Johnny darters (Etheostoma nigrum) are abundant in lakes with a pH level of 5.9 to 7.0 but are absent in lakes with a pH lower than 5.2. The yellow perch (Perca flavescens) is the only fish that appears to be tolerant to a wide pH range. This species, however, is in poor condition in acid lakes as compared with non acid lakes.  相似文献

Purpose

Quantifying suspended sediment fluxes and dynamics across mountains, and identifying the origin of sediment in severely eroded areas, are of primary importance for the management of water resources. This contribution aims to generalise previous results from suspended sediment fingerprinting obtained during 2007?C2009 in a mesoscale Alpine catchment (the Bléone River; 905?km2) in France, and to assess variability in sediment sources throughout the second half of the twentieth century.

Materials and methods

Sediment fingerprinting, based on elemental geochemistry and radionuclide measurements, was conducted on a sediment core collected in an alluvial floodplain at the basin outlet. This technique was combined with hydro-sedimentary time-series to reconstruct the origin of suspended sediment deposited at this location over the last 50?years.

Results and discussion

Interpretation of sedimentation based on historical hydrological databases corroborates core dating obtained with 137Cs and 210Pbxs activity measurements. Black marls and (marly) limestone sources provided the main fraction of sediment throughout the sequence (40 and 22?%, respectively). However, we also found evidence for the occurrence of major floods carrying large quantities of sediment originating from Quaternary deposits and conglomerates (25 and 16?%, respectively). The variability of sediment sources throughout the sequence may reflect the spatial variability of rainfall within the catchment, which in turn reflects its origin. However, the relatively homogeneous sediment composition throughout the sequence confirms that core-derived information is representative of widespread flood events.

Conclusions

These results are consistent with those obtained in previous studies. They also outline the need to take into account the entire grain size range of fine sediment in order to provide an overall picture of sediment sources and transfers within highly erosive catchments. This study also emphasizes the importance of using archival data to validate the results of sediment fingerprinting studies conducted during short contemporary monitoring programmes, and to extend fingerprinting of sediment sources over longer time-scales which include large and widespread floods.  相似文献

Purpose

Nitrous oxide (N2O) production and reduction rates are dependent on the interactions with each other and it is therefore important to evaluate them within the context of simultaneously operating N2O emission and reduction. The objective of this study was to quantify the simultaneously occurring N2O emission and reduction across a range of subtropical soils in China, to gain a mechanistic understanding of potential N2O dynamics under the denitrification condition and their important drivers, and to evaluate the potential role of the subtropical soils as either sources or sinks of N2O through denitrification.

Materials and methods

Soils (45, from a range of different land uses and soil parent materials) were collected from the subtropical region of Jiangxi Province, China, and tested for their potential capacity for N2O emission and N2O reduction to N2 during denitrification. N2O emission and reduction were determined in a closed system under N2 headspace after the soils were treated with 200?mg?kg?1 NO 3 ? -N and incubation at 30?°C for 28?days. The soil physical and chemical properties, the temporal variations in headspace N2O concentration, and NO 3 ? -N and NH 4 + -N concentrations in the soil slurry were measured.

Results and discussion

Variations in N2O concentration (N) over incubation time (t) were consistent with an equation in which average R 2?=?0.84?±?0.11 (p?<?0.05): $ N = A \times \left( {1 - \exp \left( { - {k_1} \times t} \right)} \right) - B \times \exp \left( {{k_2} \times t} \right) $ , where A is the total N2O emission during the incubation, B is a constant, and k 1 and k 2 are the N2O emission constant and reduction constants, respectively. The results of the simulation showed that k 1 was greater than k 2. The reduced amount of NO 3 ? -N in the first 7?days of incubation and the N2O emission rate (the percentage of A value relative to the amount of NO 3 ? -N reduced during the 28-day incubation, R n) were able to explain 82.9?% (p?<?0.01) of the variation in total N2O emission (A) during the incubation for the soil samples studied, indicating that the total amount of N2O emitted was determined predominately by denitrification capacity. Soil organic carbon content and soil nitrogen mineralization are the key factors that determine differences in the amounts of reduced NO 3 ? -N among the soil samples. The R n value decreased with increasing k 2 (p?<?0.01), indicating that soils with higher N2O reduction capacity under these incubation conditions would emit less N2O per unit of denitrified NO 3 ? -N than the other soils. Results are valuable in the evaluation of net N2O emissions in the subtropical soils and the global N budget.

Conclusions

In a closed, anaerobic system, variations in N2O concentration in the headspace over the incubation time were found to be compatible with a nonlinear equation. Soil organic carbon and the amount of NH 4 + -N mineralized from the organic N during the first 7?days of incubation are the key factors that determine differences in the N2O emission constant (k 1), the N2O reduction constant (k 2), the total N2O emission during the incubation (A) and the N2O emission rate (R n).  相似文献
