Selection is the major tool used by breeders to improve the genetic quality of their livestock. Traditional methods of selection are well proven and useful in improving the economic merit of livestock. The performance of an animal is affected by its genetic quality and by the environment in which it is reared. While environmental improvement is expensive and requires continuous inputs, genetic improvement is cumulative and permanent, provided that selection is maintained. To select an animal on its genetic merit account must be taken of the environmental effects on its performance. Comparisons between the performance of animals on different farms or in different years are not valid unless they have genetic material in common. The speed at which genetic improvement is passed on to the rest of a population is affected by the variation and heritability of the traits being selected, the selection intensity and the generation interval. The deer population in the United Kingdom has a high degree of variation for important traits but the selection intensity is low and the generation intervals are larger than in other farmed species. Central performance testing, group breeding schemes and the use of artificial insemination are tools which will be important in the genetic improvement of farmed deer.  相似文献

AIMS: Slaughterhouse and on-farm surveys were undertaken to investigate some aspects of leptospirosis (Leptospira interrogans) in farmed deer in the lower North Island of New Zealand. METHODS: Blood samples and kidneys were collected at slaughter from 601 l-year and older red and red X Wapiti stags and 21 adult hinds from 53 farms (10 or 12 deer per farm). Serum samples were analysed for up to seven Leptospiral serovars. Gross and histological examinations of kidneys were undertaken. Kidneys from 202 deer were cultured for leptospires. A follow-up postal questionnaire (68% response) indicated one herd had been vaccinated prior to the survey. Serological analyses were also carried out on serum bank samples from a previous on-farm survey involving male and female weaner, yearling and adult red deer from 16 commercial deer farms in March and November. RESULTS: Serological reactions at titres > or = 96 to serovar hardjo were present in 73.6%, pomona in 41.5%, copenhageni in 11.3% and tarassovi in 15.1% of farms from the slaughterhouse survey. Antibodies to serovars australis, ballam and balanica were present in three, one and four of six herds studied, respectively. Titre prevalence to hardjo was higher than that of pomona and other serovars within farms. Cultures for Leptospira were positive in 10 stags from six lines with similar prevalence across age groups. Histological examination showed many gross lesions were associated with mild interstitial cellular infiltration characteristic of subclinical Leptospiral infections. Some sections from culture-positive kidneys contained spirochetes in renal tubules. The on-farm survey showed a 10-30% within-herd prevalence of pomona and hardjo titres in 56% of 3-month-old deer herds, but by 11 months of age, 100% of herds were titre-positive with high prevalences to one or both serovars. Concurrently, herds of 1-year-old and adult deer on the same farms were all seropositive. CONCLUSION: This study has shown that Leptospiral infections are common in farmed deer in the survey area.  相似文献

Blood biochemical reference values for farmed red deer   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The activities and concentrations of 30 whole blood and plasma constituents including enzymes, substrates, electrolytes and vitamins were determined in samples from 91 clinically healthy farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) hinds ranging in age from one to 15 years. The hinds were randomly selected from a herd maintained on a mixture of reseeded and permanent hill pasture at an experimental research station in north east Scotland. The results were analysed statistically and the calculated means, standard errors and tolerance intervals provide a basis for diagnostic clinical chemistry in red deer. The data are compared with data from earlier reports on blood biochemistry in deer and other livestock species.  相似文献

A mild form of type II ostertagiosis was recorded in a group of 12, 22-month-old red deer stags, slaughtered in an abattoir in April 1989. The animals appeared clinically normal but they were light and in rather poor condition. Mixed ostertagid infections were present in very variable numbers. In the seven most heavily infected animals, 70 per cent of the worms were in the early fourth stage and assumed to be hypobiotic. In some animals the worms were maturing and in these there were lesions similar to those associated with bovine ostertagiosis.  相似文献

Tuberculous lesions were identified over a 2-year period in 36 clinically normal red deer from a single herd. The lesions were only present in the retropharyngeal lymph nodes and lymph nodes draining the intestinal tract, indicating infection by the oral route. Mycobacterium avium was isolated from 27 of 29 lesions examined by bacterial culture. Grossly and histologically, the lesions were indistinguishable from those caused by Mycobacterium bovis. DNA restriction endonuclease analysis revealed that all the 26 M. avium isolates available for examination had identical cleavage patterns. These patterns were identical to a New Zealand M. avium serotype 2 isolate from a pig and were very similar to a reference strain of M. avium serotype 2. The DNA examinations indicated that the deer were infected from a common source that was not identified.  相似文献

Faecal samples and questionnaires from 115 and 130 farms respectively were used to survey the internal parasite status of the national deer herd and examine current drenching practices. The survey included farms with red deer and wapiti-red deer crosses (Cervus elaphus), and fallow deer (Dama dama). Gastrointestinal nematode eggs were recorded from 84% of all farms, Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae from 85% of all farms, and Elaphostrongylus cervi larvae from 35% of the farms with C. elaphus. Faecal egg and larval counts were generally low. There was a significant relationship between the presence of Elaphostrongylus and the introduction of deer from Southland/Fiordland. Fenbendazole, oxfendazole and albendazole were the most frequently used anthelmintics of the 14 reported. Drenching programmes were extremely varied.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To analyse data from a study of deer herd health and productivity to identify potential risk factors for the occurrence of dystocia. DESIGN: A 2-year longitudinal observational study of 14 red deer farms was carried out in New Zealand. About 2700 hinds were monitored each year for individual characteristics including body condition score (BCS), and reproductive performance. Grazing and calving management practices were recorded. During calving, farmers recorded calving difficulties (dystocia) that needed human assistance or caused the death of the hind. Risk factors potentially affecting the occurrence of dystocia were identified and analysed by multivariable statistical techniques. RESULTS: The percentage of hinds with dystocia was 0.52% (95% CI 0.32 to 0.78). Hinds with a post-winter BCS over 3.5 were 2.7 times as likely to experience dystocia as hinds scoring 3.5 or less. Given the same BCS class, bodyweight gain in late pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of dystocia. Grazing steep paddocks in the last trimester of pregnancy decreased the risk of dystocia in hinds with a BCS over 3.5. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of dystocia on red deer farms may be reduced if key individual animal, management and environmental factors are optimal.  相似文献

Osteochondrosis is reported in association with copper deficiency in young red deer and wapiti x red deer hybrids on eight deer farms throughout New Zealand. On two farms, more than 30% of fawns were affected. Affected animals were lame, often had one or more swollen joints, and in some cases had an abnormal “bunny-hopping” gait or “cow-hocked” stance. Lesions were most common in the carpal, tarsal, stifle and hip joints, and were usually bilateral. Defects in articular cartilage ranged from loose flaps to complete separation with exposure of subchondral bone and the presence of cartilage fragments within the joint space. In advanced cases, the joints had features of degenerative arthropathy. Bilateral epiphyseolysis of the femoral head was observed in some severely lame deer. All deer with osteochondrosis had low serum and/or liver copper concentrations.  相似文献

Current knowledge of leptospirosis in farmed deer in New Zealand is reviewed. Over the past 25 years, leptospirosis has been reported to occur in individual cases as well as in herd outbreaks in farmed deer and in human cases linked to farmed deer. Serological studies and evidence from bacterial culture suggest infection is widespread. Mixing of young stock from several sources appears to be a significant risk factor for outbreaks. The culture of Leptospira interrogans serovars Hardjobovis, Pomona and Copenhageni has been reported. Infection with serovar Hardjobovis had the highest prevalence, either individually or mixed with serovar Pomona. Infection with serovar Copenhageni appears uncommon and its pathogenicity in deer is unproven. Titres to serovars Australis, Ballum, Balcanica and Tarassovi have been reported. Deer appear to be maintenance hosts for serovar Hardjobovis, incidental or accidental hosts and probably a maintenance population for serovar Pomona, since some infections persist for several months, and accidental hosts for serovar Copenhageni. Serovar Pomona appears to produce clinical and probably subclinical disease, whereas serovar Hardjobovis appears to cause only subclinical disease, although the relative risk of disease causation has not been determined. Clinical disease is usually manifested by haemolysis, jaundice, renal lesions, haemoglobinuria and often by sudden death. Renal lesions are commonly observed at slaughter and many are associated with leptospiral infections. Occupationally, slaughterhouse workers appear to be at greatest risk of contracting the disease from deer. Vaccination produces serological responses, but its effectiveness in protecting against disease, and prevention or reduction of shedding in urine, has not yet been confirmed in deer. More robust knowledge of the epidemiology of leptospiral infections in deer, and the effectiveness of vaccines and vaccination regimes, is needed to assist the deer industry to develop a strategy to manage this disease.  相似文献

Twenty-nine farmed red deer hinds two years of age or older were observed during mating in April, and the dates of oestrus and, or, mating were recorded. From May 28 to August 13, at approximately weekly intervals, the deer's uteri and associated structures were examined by rectal ultrasound using a 5 MHz transducer while the deer were held standing in a restraining device. The uterine diameter, amniotic sac diameters, crown-rump length, head length, nose length, chest depth, chest width and placentome base-apex and width were measured for each scan. Quadratic regression equations were computed for each measurement with age, using data from hinds with known mating dates, and the chronological sequence of appearance of a range of uterine and fetal characteristics was recorded. There were significant quadratic regressions. (P less than 0.001) for each of the measurements. The accuracy of pregnancy detection to 117 days after conception was 99.3 per cent and to 132 days after conception 97.4 per cent. The confirmation of non-pregnancy was 96.5 per cent accurate. The regressions of each measurement by age should provide an accurate method for the estimation of fetal age in red deer.  相似文献

Post mortem examination of red deer calves on a deer farm situated on hill ground in north-east Scotland revealed infection by a lungworm morphologically similar to Dictyocaulus viviparus. Trials were conducted to monitor the natural development of D viviparus infection in red deer, to investigate the value of a commercial lungworm vaccine and to evaluate methods of treating clinical cases. The findings indicate that the syndrome may be less apparent in red deer than it is in cattle, protection might be gained by vaccination and that housing and medication provide useful therapy. The extent of clinical disease is likely to depend on the general health, bodily condition and nutritional status of the animals versus the weight of infection acquired from the pasture. However, various factors can affect both sides in this confrontation.  相似文献

A comparative cervical skin test using 1.0 mg/ml bovine purified protein derivative and 0.5 mg/ml avian purified protein derivative was evaluated as a method for detecting tuberculosis in farmed deer. A positive comparative cervical skin test reaction was defined as a bovine response with a 2 mm or greater increase in skin thickness which was greater or equal to the avian response. Estimates of the sensitivity of the comparative cervical skin test were obtained from a series of experiments conducted on 60 deer intratracheally inoculated with Mycobacterium bovis. Prior tuberculin skin testing was found to suppress the skin reactivity to a subsequent comparative cervical skin test. This effect was most pronounced at short intervals of 3-7 days, but could still be measured 60 days after the previous test. When the test interval was greater than 60 days, the sensitivity of the comparative cervical skin test was 91.4%. The specificity of the comparative cervical skin test was 98.7% when 1157 deer from 17 uninfected herds with a history of nonspecific skin test reactions were examined. There was no statistical difference in the mean skin thickness increases of three groups of infected animals tested with 2 mg/ml, 0.2 mg/ml and 0.02 mg/ml of bovine purified protein derivative respectively.  相似文献
