Color of chips made from potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) subjected to handling treatments was darker than of non-handled tubers in nine of ten experiments. ‘Monona’ and ‘Rosa’ appeared to be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of handling than were ‘Kennebec’ and ‘Norchip,’ but all cultivars were affected. Levels of fructose and glucose were elevated by handling. Sucrose also increased in all cultivars except ‘Kennebec.’ The handling effect was most noticeable early (December) or late (March or April) in the storage season. The effect of chilling did not appear to be intensified by handling.  相似文献

Trials were conducted in Alberta with Norchip, Norland, and Russet Burbank and in Ontario with Kennebec, Russet Burbank, Norchip, and Superior tubers to determine their response to short-term exposure to air temperatures of 0, ?1, and ?5 C and to long-term exposure to ?1, 0, 1,2, and 3 C. Exposure of seed tubers to ?1 C from 6 hours to 5 days did not affect growth characteristics or tuber yield of any of the five cultivars studied. Long-term (October–May) exposure to ?1 C in one study severely reduced emergence and tuber yield of Norchip (P<0.05). While the marketable yield of Russet Burbank was also reduced (P<0.05) by this treatment, Norland was not affected. Tubers of all cultivars exposed to air temperatures of ?3 or ?5 C for longer than 24 hours were severely injured and were not planted in the field trials at either location. In Alberta exposure of seed tubers of Norchip, Norland, and Russet Burbank to ?5 C for 6 and 12 hours caused a reduction (not significant) in yield. In Ontario, long-term storage at 1, 2, and 3 C and in combination with short-term (2 weeks) exposure to 0 or 10 C had no effect on growth or marketable yield of Norchip, Russet Burbank, Superior, and Kennebec seed tubers.  相似文献

The cultivars Atlantic, Belchip, Denali, Monona, Norchip and Russet Burbank were harvested at weekly intervals from early August to early October in 1980–81 and analyzed for the following attributes: 1) sucrose rating (SR) (mg sucrose/g fresh tuber) 2) specific gravity (Sp.G.); 3) total yield and 4) chip color. At the final harvest, samples of each cultivar were stored and analyzed for color to determine chipping ability after storage. All varieties achieved a SR below 1.0 by 145 days of growth. Higher nitrogen levels reduced the total yield for early harvests but had no significant effect for later harvests. Changes in sucrose levels as tubers matured were helpful in evaluating the chemical maturity of more recently developed cultivars in relation to established chipping varieties.  相似文献

The stolon length and percentage of tubers with tuber roots were compared for eight cultivars ofSolanum tuberosum L. over two growing seasons. Although stolon lengths varied considerably within cultivars, there were significant differences in the average stolon lengths among cultivars. The cultivars Norchip and Monona had the shortest stolons whereas Norland had the longest average stolons. The length of the stolon did not appear to be related to color type or time of tuber maturity. Since there was no significant difference in stolon length between years, stolon length appears to be a consistent genetic trait. There was no significant correlation between the stolon length and tuber size. The incidence of tuber roots also showed variation among cultivars, although there was significant variability between times of sampling. Recent studies have demonstrated that to maximize calcium uptake by tubers, the calcium must be placed around the tubers and stolons. Since stolon length determines the location of the tubers in the hill, the stolon length of different cultivars may need to be considered for fertilizer application, cultivation or hilling procedures. Thus, to get maximum benefit from supplemental calcium for Norchip and Monona, application would need to be made close to the main stem. However, in the other cultivars, the majority of the hill would have to be enriched in calcium to effectively supply calcium to the various tubers in the hill.  相似文献

The chip color of two potato varieties (Monona and Kennebec) processed directly out of 40 F storage changed in different directions after short exposure to ethylene and continued cold storage. Monona tubers produced much darker chips after ethylene treatment whereas non-enzymatic browning of Kennebec chips was considerably less after gassing. The distribution of pigmentation in chips prepared from both tubers was more uniform after ethylene treatment.  相似文献

The major tuber sugars—glucose, fructose and sucrose — in tubers of the Red Pontiac, Kennebec and Monona potato varieties harvested five times during the 1970 growing season were determined quantitatively by a gas-liquid Chromatographic technique. Also, chips were made from tubers and chip color was measured objectively and reported as Rd values. Red Pontiac tubers produced the darkest-colored chips (Rd-15.5), and its tubers tended to accumulate the highest levels of the three sugars. The major difference between Monona, which produced chips with the lightest color (Rd-21.1), and Kennebec (Rd-19.5) was the very low level of glucose found in the tubers of Monona. Varieties produced chips lightest in color at the second (8/31) or third (9/15) harvest dates. Conversely, darkest-colored chips were obtained from each variety at the fourth harvest date (9/28). This was attributed to the cool, wet weather. Sugar content also varied during the harvesting schedule. Glucose content changed little until late in the season when an increase occurred. Fructose tended to decline until the final harvest when a distinct increase was obtained. Sucrose declined significantly through the third harvest, but changed little thereafter.  相似文献

The unexpected detection ofPotato mop-top virus (PMTV) in potatoes growing at several locations in the U.S.A. and Canada in 2002 has led to the realization that this soil-borne virus may be widespread throughout the potato-producing regions of both countries. A lack of information concerning the response of U.S. cultivars to PMTV infection caused us to examine the effects of PMTV on field-grown plants at three locations in the Peruvian Andes where the virus and its fungal vector,Spongospora subterranea, are endemic. All 21 U.S. cultivars tested proved susceptible to PMTV infection, especially at La Victoria where the overall incidence of both PMTV and powdery scab was high. Symptom expression in the foliage proved to be an unreliable indicator of virus infection, and thus, more reliable serological (NCM-ELISA) and nucleic acid-based techniques (NASH and RT-PCR) were used to monitor tuber tissue for the presence of PMTV. As much as 25% of field-grown tubers of cvs Kennebec, Monona, and Norland were infected with PMTV, but no correlation between virus infection and either the incidence or severity of powdery scab for any variety was apparent. Although PMTV infection did not result in the appearance of spraing or other internal necrotic reactions resembling those reported from many North American and European locations, a disproportionate proportion of infected tubers did exhibit a reticulate surface cracking. In hydroponic culture, the proportion of cracked tubers increased dramatically when the nutrient solution was seeded with virus-infestedS. subterranea. Comparatively few tubers of cvs Monona and Russet Burbank exhibited this surface cracking, suggesting that these two varieties may be somewhat tolerant to PMTV infection.  相似文献

Summary Applying saline solutions (EC 3.2 up to 7.0 dS/m) to seed tubers of different cultivars planted in tuff delayed shoot emergence and root and shoot development. Fresh weight of most cultivars was decreased by 60% but cv. Serrana Inta was more tolerant to salinity and fresh weight was decreased by 20%. When planted in 500 cm3 pots containing loessial soil some seed tubers rotted and plant growth was severely inhibited, possibly because soil aeration was impeded. Physiologically ageing seed tubers for 33 days at 6°C decreased sensitivity of most cultivars to moderate salinity whereas ageing for 68 days increased sensitivity to high salinity. Freshly-cut seed pieces of the potato cultivars Ranger Russet and Shepody were dipped in 0, 0.5, 1 or 2 mg/1 Gibberellic Acid (GA3) prior to planting. GA3 treatments increased stem and tuber numbers per hill of both cultivars and shifted tuber size profile toward the production of more seed-sized (up to 226 g) tubers and fewer large (greater than 340 g) tubers. The effect of GA3 on reducing average tuber size was similar for the two cultivars. Total tuber yields were not affected. A 2 mg GA3/1 seed piece dip decreased the yield of US#1 tubers in Ranger Russet primarily due to a significant increase in yield of tubers less than 226 g. Also, yields of culls were greater after a 1 mg GA3/1 seed piece treatment, suggesting Ranger Russet is sensitive to this concentration of GA3. One and 2 mg GA3/1 seed piece dips to Shepody increased yields of tubers less than 113 g by 93% and reduced the yield of tubers greater than 340 g by 25% to 50%. GA3 at 1 to 2 mg/1 may be useful in the production of seed potatoes with the cultivar Shepody which tends to produce many large tubers.  相似文献

Seven potato cultivars (Norchip, Monona, Onaway, Snowden, Atlantic, Saginaw Gold, Novachip) and the seedling ND860-2 differing in their susceptibility to low temperature sweetening were analyzed to determine if starch structural stability parameters could be used to consistently predict and/or monitor chip color (Agtron score) of potatoes during storage at 4 and 12 C. Fresh tissue gelatinization temperature (Tp) was significantly correlated (P≤0.05) with chip color for all cultivars except Onaway, Snowden and Atlantic for tubers harvested in 1993 when stored at 12 C. No correlations existed between Tp of isolated starch and chip color (P>0.05). In 1994 no correlations existed between Tp of fresh tissue, Tp of starch and chip color at either 4 or 12 C (P>0.05). Prediction of chip color based on starch stability parameters was not possible. Starch crystallinity, amylose content and starch granule size distribution could not be used to predict or monitor chip color in stored tubers.  相似文献

Tuber initiation and development in irrigated and non-irrigated potatoes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tuber initiation and development are processes basic to potato production and are particularly critical in areas with short growing seasons. It is important to know how and to what extent management decisions affect these processes in order to maximize the yield of marketable tubers. A two-year field study, conducted in southcentral Alaska, examined top growth, tuber initiation, and tuber development in eight potato cultivars grown with and without irrigation. Plants of the cultivars Allagash Russet, Bake-King, Green Mountain, Kennebec, Lemhi Russet, Russet Burbank, Shepody, and Superior were harvested weekly throughout the growing season, and top dry weight, numbers of tubers, and individual tuber fresh weights were recorded. Top dry weight was reduced by moisture stress shortly after emergence in 1993, and about one month following emergence in 1994, when early-season soil moisture was greater. The weight of tubers was similarly affected within approximately 5 wk of emergence in 1993 and 6 weeks in 1994. Tuber weight at harvest was increased two-to three-fold by irrigation in all cultivars. The number of tubers each plant set was affected by irrigation in most, but not all, cultivars. Some varieties (Lemhi Russet in 1994, Allagash Russet both years) set more tubers than were maintained through the growing season. Tuber remnants found during sample collection indicated that tuber reabsorption had occurred. Irrigated Green Mountain had more than one tuber initiation period during the season, whereas other varieties such as Shepody maintained a relatively constant number of tubers following initial tuber set. Tuber size distribution at the end of the growing season showed that larger tubers were favored by irrigation.  相似文献

Many potatoes in the Northwest are grown on sandy soils with sprinkler irrigation. The low water holding capacity and restricted rooting often associated with coarse-textured soils create conditions where water stress injury is likely. Temporary water shortage due to irrigation system failure is a hazard on these soils. The Russet Burbank cultivar is often severely injured by such water stress. It is not known how the cultivars Nooksack and Lemhi respond to these conditions. A study was conducted to compare the responses of Russet Burbank, Nooksack, and Lemhi cultivars to interruptions in irrigation during tuber initiation or during bulking, and to gradually increasing water stress from declining water application rates during the last 8 to 10 weeks of the growing season. In most categories evaluated, Russet Burbank was most injured by water stress, especially in percent U.S. No. 1 tubers. Much of the decrease in U.S. No. 1 tubers was due to small size. Nooksack generally was the least affected by water stress while Lemhi was affected slightly more than Nooksack. Both Nooksack and Lemhi withstood periods of water stress and produced satisfactory yields and grades of tubers while Russet Burbank did not produce profitable levels of marketable tubers.  相似文献

Control of silver scurf on daughter tubers was obtained by imazalil applied to seed tubers as a pre- or post-storage treatment or as a furrow treatment (at time of planting), in three field experiments. Post-storage and pre- and post-storage combination treatments provided consistent results. The most effective treatment in the first and second experiments was the combined pre- and post-storage application of imazalil. However, separate pre- and post-storage treatment also significantly reduced the incidence compared with the non-treated control. No differences were observed between dosages of 15 and 30 g a.i. of imazalil per ton of seed tubers. Although furrow treatment at planting time (1.5 1/ha) significantly reduced silver scurf incidence on daughter tubers, it was less effective than seed treatments. However, the combined treatment of pre-storage application and furrow treatment significantly reduced the disease and was more effective than the single pre-storage seed treatment. In the third experiment, a reduction of disease incidence and severity index was obtained by post-storage treatments or with the combination of pre- and post-storage applications.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted in Alberta and Ontario with Norchip, Norland, Russet Burbank, Sangre and Superior potato cultivars to determine response to short-term exposure of seed tubers to below freezing temperatures in the fall. Exposure of the dormant seed tubers to ?-1 C for up to 48 hours did not affect the yield or growth characteristics of the cultivars. However exposure of seed tubers to ?-5 C temperatures for 6 or 12 hours caused marked (P < 0.05) reductions in marketable yield, marketable tuber number, maturity and vine size. Exposure to ?-5 C for periods longer than 12 hours resulted in severe freezing damage and subsequent decay of most of the tubers.  相似文献

Our previous work has shown that early-maturing soybean is suitable for intercropping with vassava at a high latitude (27°S) in south-east Queensland, Australia, as it does not effect the tuber yield. The present study examines whether later-maturing cultivars of soybean with higher yield potential might be more productive. Plant arrangement for cassava was the same in sole crop and in intercrop, while two soybean rows in every six rows were replaced by a row of cassava in intercropping. All soybean cultivars dominated intercropped cassava, and their dry-matter growth and seed yield were not affected by competition with cassava. Growth of cassava was, on the other hand, severely restricted by intercropped soybean, particularly by late-maturing types. After removal of early-maturing soybean, cassava recovered quickly to produce high leaf-area and effectively intercepted solar radiation. Consequential high total dry-matter production, combined with high assimilate allocation to tubers, resulted in tuber yield at the final harvest similar to that in sole cassava. After the removal of late-maturing soybean, however, recovery was poor, and with a short growing season remaining, tuber yields were only 50–60% of that of sole cassava. In addition to their adverse effect on cassave growth, late-maturing cultivars were not suitable as an intercrop because of low harvest indices and low light-conversion efficiency (dry matter produced per unit intercepted radiation), although total light interception during the whole growth of cassava/soybean intercrop was similar to that of sole cassava. The low overall light-conversion efficiency in intercropping with late-maturing cultivars was due to very low dry-matter production of soybean during pod-filling when light interception was still high.  相似文献

Summary The effects of a single treatment of heat or drought stress imposed at different stages of tuber growth, were investigated in two potato cultivars, Désirée and Cara. Both stresses impaired dry matter accumulation in tubers, and tuber yields. Stress imposed at early stages of tuber growth, when tubers were less than 20 mm in diameter, had little effect on dry matter accumulation, whereas stress imposed later resulted ingnificant losses of dry matter in tubers. Stress imposed during later tuber growth increased the percentage of tubers sprouting in the soil. Tuber malformation was less affected. The adverse effects of heat on tuber yield and quality seemed to be greater than those of drought. Drought increased the content of total soluble solids (TSS) and lowered the osmotic potential in the tuber tissue of both cultivars. These effects were detectable even 55 days after stress relief. Summary The first large scale outdoor measurements of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) stem water potential (SWP) usingin situ temperature-corrected stem psychrometers were performed on three cultivars common to Ontario, Canada (Atlantic, Monona and Norchip). Potato plants were examined under three soil water treatments which included rainfed, irrigated and stressed through the use of rain shelters. Cultivar variations in SWP under both irrigated and rainfed conditions were slight (P>0.05), although some significant (P<0.05) differences in mid-day SWP were evident, especially under conditions conducive to high atmospheric water demand. Under these conditions. cv. Atlantic maintained the lowest SWP with cv. Monona highest and cv. Norchip was intermediate. Few differences in pre-dawn SWP were detected between the three cultivars under well watered and rainfed conditions. Under low soil water, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed. The similar trend of Atlantic maintaining the lowest SWP with Monona the highest was consistent.  相似文献

Potato stolbur is a phytoplasmal disease that seriously affects yield and tuber quality in South Eastern Europe, Russia and the Mediterranean areas. In 2007 and 2008, field experiments were carried out to determine stolbur resistance of processing potato cultivars at Sannicolau Mare (Romania) by determining consistency and concentration of reducing sugars (fructose and glucose), sucrose and phytoplasmas in potato tubers. In both years, non-symptomatic potato tubers showed sucrose levels in the range of 3,000 mg kg−1 fresh weight (FW). In contrast, sucrose concentrations were up to 11,820 mg kg−1 FW in 2007 and 19,560 mg kg−1 FW in 2008 in tubers showing severe symptoms. These high values severely affect suitability of tubers for processing as sucrose serves as substrate for the formation of reducing sugars that are the limiting factor in fried potato production for Maillard-related discolouration. The cultivars examined differed considerably in susceptibility to stolbur disease. Whereas cvs. ‘Courage’ and ‘Lady Rosetta’ showed high numbers of diseased tubers and high sucrose concentrations, ‘Lady Claire’ had a lower incidence of symptomatic tubers and lower sucrose concentrations. However, fully resistant cultivars were not observed. Across all cultivars examined, phytoplasmal concentration was significantly higher in symptomatic tubers than in non-symptomatic ones.  相似文献

Internal brown spot (IBS) is a physiological disorder of potato tubers consisting in the appearance of punctiform and/or enlarged rust-coloured necrosis in parenchymal tissues. The IBS disorder leads to important economic impact and yield depreciation since quality, sensory and processing features of tubers may be highly compromised. Nowadays, the causes of IBS are still debated; however, the combination of several genetic, nutritional and environmental factors seems to have a relevant role in modulation of symptoms. In the current work, IBS occurrences together with skin roughness were monitored in potato tubers of different cultivars harvested in 2 years of field trials under different field conditions (environment, irrigation rate). All three IBS-susceptible cultivars used, Luminella, Majestic and Ricciona di Napoli, showed significant IBS incidence. Importantly, incidence and severity increased with tuber size. Ricciona di Napoli was the cultivar most affected by both IBS and skin roughness. Findings showed a strong positive correlation between IBS and skin roughness, suggesting that suboptimal growth conditions may have affected both physiological disorders. The association between IBS and potato skin roughness may provide new insights for the implementation of non-destructive IBS detection in potatoes.  相似文献

A three-year study in central Wisconsin with timed foliar applications of maleic hydrazide at 3 lb/A (3.36 kg/ha) resulted in an improvement in quality and a favorable alteration in the shape of tubers of the Russet Burbank potato variety. Application in early and mid-July resulted in an increase in yield of U.S. 1 tubers and reduced yield of malformed tubers. Over 40 percent fewer misshapen tubers were produced when applications of maleic hydrazide were made during July when compared with tubers from untreated plants. Applications made in midor late July resulted in tuber development with a more favorable length to diameter ratio of U. S. 1 tubers, again compared with tubers from untreated plants. Maleic hydrazide applied in early or mid-June resulted in severely reduced yield and increased incidence of misshapen tubers. When applied in July or early August, no effect on tuber specific gravity was found. Maleic hydrazide functioned as an effective sprout inhibitor on tubers from all treatment dates except when applied in early June.  相似文献
