In 11 'farrow-to-finish' outdoor or indoor production units, blood samples from late pregnant gilts were tested by indirect immunofluorescence antibody (IFA) serum assay for Lawsonia intracellularis. The offspring of positively tested gilts were tested at 2, 7, 12, 17, 22 and 27 weeks of age for seroprevalence of Lawsonia intracellularis. All offspring of IFA positive gilts were seronegative at 2 and 7 weeks of age. At 12 weeks of age 81.0% of indoor and 51.0% of outdoor pigs were tested positive. While at 17 weeks of age 82.5% of indoor-raised pigs showed seropositivity, in outdoor units the seropositivity declined to 31.3%. At weeks 22 and 27 indoor-raised pigs still showed marked seropositivity (17.7% and 11.5%) but their outdoor-raised counterparts revealed declining values (7.4% and 0%).  相似文献

The study was performed in a large Croatian production unit from May 2000 till June 2002. Blood samples form late-pregnant gilts were tested by indirect immunofluorescence antibody (IFA) serum assay for Lawsonia intracellularis. The offspring of 301 positively tested gilts were dislocated after the nursery phase either to indoor or outdoor growing-finishing facilities. Ten percent of these animals (142 indoor, 143 outdoor raised pigs) were tested at 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 weeks of age for seroprevalence of Lawsonia intracellularis. All offspring of IFA positive gilts were seronegative at 2 and 6 weeks of age. At 10 weeks of age 71.1% (101 animals) of indoor and 32.8% (47 animals) of outdoor pigs were tested positive (P < 0.05). While at 14 weeks of age 71.1% of indoor raised pigs showed seropositivity, the seropositivity declined in outdoor units to 7.6% (P < 0.01). At weeks 18 (52.1%), 22 (47.8%) and 26 (21.7%) indoor raised pigs still showed marked seropositivity and but their outdoor raised counterparts returned to seronegativity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine change over time in sero-prevalence of antibodies against Lawsonia intracellularis among growing-finishing pigs housed in indoor versus outdoor facilities. DESIGN: Serologic survey. ANIMALS: 93 pigs born to seropositive gilts and raised in indoor (n = 49) or outdoor (44) growing-finishing facilities. PROCEDURE: Blood samples were collected from the pigs 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, and 26 weeks after birth and tested for antibodies against L intracellularis with an indirect immunofluorescence assay. RESULTS: None of the pigs were seropositive 2 or 6 weeks after birth.Ten weeks after birth, 74% and 76% of pigs in indoor and outdoor growing-finishing facilities were seropositive, respectively, whereas 14 weeks after birth, the percentage of pigs in indoor growing-finishing facilities that were seropositive was substantially higher than the percentage of pigs in outdoor facilities that were. From 18 weeks after birth to the end of the study, none of the pigs in outdoor growing-finishing facilities were seropositive, whereas low percentages of pigs in indoor facilities were seropositive 18, 22, and 26 weeks after birth. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that seroprevalence of antibodies against L intracellularis decreases faster among growing-finishing pigs housed in outdoor facilities than among growing-finishing pigs housed in indoor facilities.  相似文献

A cohort of 57 pigs in a farrow-to-finish swine herd with mild clinical mycoplasmal disease was followed to determine patterns of seroconversion to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (MH), detected with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Survival analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between time to seroconversion and possible risk factors for MH infection (or enzootic pneumonia).

Pigs were housed in outdoor pens at approximately 9 weeks of age, when passively acquired MH antibodies had decayed. From 9 to 11 weeks of age and during a 5 week period, pigs were exposed by direct (nose-to-nose) or indirect contact to older seropositive gilts. Blood samples were collected from each pig at 3 week intervals until market age, when they were either slaughtered or selected for breeding. Antibody concentration was measured as the ratio of optical densities of the serum sample to the positive control (S/P). Based on the sample distribution of S/P ratios from pigs in an MH-free herd, pigs were considered positive when S/P ratios were greater than 0.34. At the beginning of the study, all pigs were seronegative to MH. Seroconversion was first detected after 21 days, and was most frequent about 11 weeks after exposure to older seropositive gilts. By the end of the study, 11 pigs (19%) had seroconverted, with S/P ratios ranging from 0.40 to 1.11. The presence of gross lung lesions showed a moderate to good agreement with ELISA results (K = 0.62). Histologic lesions were evident in virtually all slaughtered pigs, ranging from mild, non MH-specific lesions to severe lesions typical of MH infection. No secondary respiratory pathogens were isolated. Clinical signs were mild and there was no significant difference (P > 0.4) in weight gain between seropositive and seronegative pigs, or between pigs with and without lung lesions. A Cox regression model was fitted to the seroconversion data, and opportunity of contact (direct or indirect) was the only significant variable. After adjustment for breed and antibody S/P ratio prior to exposure, pigs in direct contact with seropositive gilts were seven times more likely to seroconvert than those in only indirect contact.  相似文献

Gilts from dams that had been inoculated with inactivated porcine parvovirus (PPV) vaccine before breeding became seronegative to PPV by 26 weeks of age. Vaccination of these gilts with inactivated PPV vaccine at 32 weeks of age resulted in an antibody response that peaked at about 2 weeks after vaccination, with -log10 mean hemagglutination inhibiting (HI) antibody titers of less than 2. In the first-year group (82 gilts), HI titers gradually decreased, 20% of the gilts being seronegative by 6 to 7 weeks after vaccination and 75% being seronegative by 16 weeks after vaccination. In the second-year group, 93 gilts were infected naturally by a field strain of PPV at about 11 weeks after single vaccination with inactivated PPV. Additionally, in the second year, 20 vaccinated and 6 nonvaccinated gilts were immune-challenged with virulent PPV at 10 to 12 weeks after vaccination. Neither field nor challenge PPV infection of vaccinated pregnant gilts caused reproductive failure, even though some of the gilts became seronegative for PPV before challenge. Our findings suggest that single vaccination of gilts with inactivated PPV vaccine should give adequate protection from PPV-induced reproductive failure, even though serum HI titers decrease to an undetectable level shortly before PPV infection.  相似文献

The study was performed with the aim to characterize seasonal variations on the Salmonella seroprevalence in gilts. Serological results from a total of 13,511 gilts were available for the analysis. The samples were taken from 11 nucleus herds, 19 suppliers and 46 breeding gilt rearing herds. In principle, it was planned to take 10 blood samples at monthly intervals from gilts five to six months of age. The overall seroprevalences of Salmonella were low in the herds of this study. The analysis of seasonal variation showed a statistically significantly lower seroprevalence during the summer quarter (July through September). In comparison to other studies in Germany it must be pointed out that the herds belonged to a single breeding company, which has a strong commitment to enhanced biosecurity. The marked seasonal variation in Salmonella seroprevalences should be taken into consideration in the classification of herds within the scope of monitoring programmes. Scoring of herds is meaningful only after regular sampling for at least one year. Further investigations considering management, housing and hygienic conditions are necessary to determine the factors leading to higher Salmonella seroprevalence in the winter.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence and identify the strains of swine influenza virus (SwIV), as well as the seroprevalence of porcine parvovirus (PPV), transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), and classical swine fever virus (CSFV) in pigs in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). Blood samples (309) were randomly collected from pigs at farms throughout T&T. Serum samples were tested for the presence of antibodies to the aforementioned viruses using commercial ELISA kits, and the circulating strains of SwIV were identified by the hemagglutination inhibition test (HIT). Antibodies against SwIV were detected in 114 out of the 309 samples (37%). Out of a total of 26 farms, 14 tested positive for SwIV antibodies. HI testing revealed high titers against the A/sw/Minnesota/593/99 H3N2 strain and the pH1N1 2009 pandemic strain. Antibodies against PPV were detected in 87 out of the 309 samples (28%), with 11 out of 26 farms testing positive for PPV antibodies. Antibodies against PCV-2 were detected in 205 out of the 309 samples tested (66%), with 25 out of the 26 farms testing positive for PCV-2 antibodies. No antibodies were detected in any of the tested pigs to PRRSV, TGEV, PRCV, or CSFV.  相似文献

Sows subjected to prenatal stress have been found to produce offspring that have altered responses to stress. Our objective was to determine if exposing a sow to stress would alter the response of the offspring to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at 2 mo of age or their response to mixing stress at 4 mo of age. Sow treatments consisted of intravenous injections of ACTH (1 IU/kg of BW), exposure to rough handling for a 10-min duration (rough), or no treatment (control) once per week from d 42 to 77 of gestation. At 2 mo of age, pigs from each treatment, 1 per litter (n = 21, 17, and 15 for the ACTH, rough, and control treatments, respectively), were challenged with 2 μg of LPS/kg of BW or saline, or served as a noninjected control. Their behavioral response to a human approach test and salivary cortisol were measured. At 4 mo of age, 1 pig from each treatment (n = 14, 14, and 15 for the ACTH, rough, and control treatments, respectively) was taken from its home pen and placed in a pen of unfamiliar pigs. At this time, a punch biopsy wound (6 × 6 mm) was created to measure the ability of the pig to heal the wound. At this same time, each pig received a 1-mL intramuscular injection of 20% ovine red blood cells (oRBC), and then a second injection of oRBC at 21 d postmixing. Blood samples were collected 3 times per week for 2 wk and then once a week for 4 more weeks. Blood samples were analyzed for cortisol, porcine corticosteroid-binding globulin, antibody response to oRBC, and nitric oxide production by macrophages. Behavior was recorded during the first 5 d after mixing. All pigs in the LPS challenge responded with characteristic sickness behavior; however, pigs in the rough treatment showed less sickness behavior than those in the other 2 treatments (P < 0.05). Maternal stress treatment did not affect (P < 0.43) salivary cortisol. Pigs from all treatments responded similarly to mixing stress with regard to cortisol, porcine corticosteroid-binding globulin, antibody titers, nitric oxide production, and hematology measures, and all pigs experienced the same amount of aggression in response to mixing. Without altering peripheral measures of stress responsivity, prenatal stress enhanced the ability of pigs to cope with a simulated immune challenge, which could prove to be an adaptation to challenging environments.  相似文献

Pasteurella multocida toxin was purified by affinity chromatography and inactivated by treatment with formaldehyde before use as a single component vaccine against progressive atrophic rhinitis in pigs. Twenty pregnant gilts which were vaccinated twice before farrowing with either low or high doses of the purified toxoid, developed dose-dependent positive serum and colostrum titres to the toxin and, unlike the progeny of 10 untreated control gilts, the offspring of the vaccinated gilts also had serum titres. These titres could be measured in blood samples taken for more than eight weeks from birth for most pigs born to gilts vaccinated with low doses and more than 12 weeks for pigs born to gilts vaccinated with high doses of the vaccine. All the piglets were inoculated intranasally with Bordetella bronchiseptica and toxigenic P multocida. The clinical and post mortem examinations of snouts revealed a significant reduction in the frequency and degree of conchal atrophy in the two groups of pigs from the vaccinated gilts compared with the pigs from control gilts. Clinically 90 per cent of the snouts of pigs born to vaccinated gilts appeared normal whereas only 28 per cent of the snouts of control pigs were not shortened or deviated at eight weeks of age. At slaughter 11 per cent of the pigs born to vaccinated gilts and 81 per cent of the control pigs had severe turbinate atrophy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Twenty-seven Swedish purebred Yorkshire gilts were transported 12 km to the clinic. In 8 gilts (Group A), blood samples were drawn in connection with transportation, while in the remaining 19 gilts (Group B) no samples were drawn at this time. After transportation the gilts were examined by laparoscopy and catheterized. Blood samples were then drawn 3 times and oestrus detection was performed twice daily. After 1 week the laparoscopy was repeated.Twenty gilts (74 %) showed oestrus within 1 week, on average 5.4 days (4–7.5 days) after transportation. Elevated oestradiol-17β levels were seen in those gilts approximately 2 days after transportation. The Cortisol level was significantly higher (p < 0.001) on day 1 (the day of transportation) than on day 2 and a markedly higher level of Cortisol was seen on days 1 and 2 in the gilts which did not show oestrus (2 gilts), compared with the gilts in which oestrus was induced (6 gilts) by transportation. The difference was significant on day 2 (p < 0.05). The CBG level was significantly decreased (p < 0.001) on day 2 for all 8 gilts. During day 3 to day 8 there was no difference in the Cortisol level between days (groups A and B, 27 gilts), and no differences were seen in the levels of Cortisol and CBG between gilts showing (20 gilts) and not showing oestrus (7 gilts). The hypothesis propounded that the higher levels of Cortisol on days 1 and 2 inhibited induction of oestrus in those gilts which did not show oestrus after transportation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of anesthesia and surgery on serologic responses to vaccination in kittens. DESIGN: Prospective controlled trial. ANIMALS: 32 specific-pathogen-free kittens. PROCEDURES: Kittens were assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups: neutering at 7, 8, or 9 weeks of age or no neutering. All kittens were inoculated with modified-live virus vaccines against feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline herpesvirus (FHV), and feline calicivirus (FCV) at 8, 11, and 14 weeks of age and inactivated rabies virus (RV) at 14 weeks of age. Serum antibody titers against FPV, FHV, and FCV were determined at 8, 9, 11, 14, and 17 weeks of age; RV titers were determined at 14 and 17 weeks of age. RESULTS: Serologic responses of kittens neutered at the time of first vaccination (8 weeks) were not different from those of kittens neutered 1 week before (7 weeks) or 1 week after (9 weeks) first vaccination or from those of kittens that were not neutered. In total, 31%, 0%, 69%, and 9% of kittens failed to develop adequate titers against FPV, FCV, FHV, and RV, respectively, by 17 weeks of age. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Neutering at or near the time of first vaccination with a modified-live virus vaccine did not impair antibody responses in kittens. Many kittens that were last vaccinated at 14 weeks of age had inadequate antibody titers at 17 weeks of age. Kittens may be vaccinated in the perioperative period when necessary, and the primary vaccination series should be extended through at least 16 weeks of age.  相似文献

In the present study the seroprevalence of the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep was investigated in 6 regions of Lithuania. Blood samples were taken from 354 sheep and were tested using commercial ELISA method. The total seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep was 42.1%. Significant differences in seroprevalence were observed between age groups (P < or = 0.05). The results of this investigation suggest that the Toxoplasma gondii parasite is widely spread, and can be one of reasons of sheep abortion in Lithuania.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to examine the influence of exogenous growth hormone on the reproductive axis in gilts. Experiment one employed 26 Yorkshire × Landrace prepubertal gilts, which were selected at 150 d and 86.5 ± 1.5 kg bodyweight (BW) and assigned equally to two treatments. Gilts received injections of either porcine growth hormone at 90 μg/kg BW, or vehicle buffer, from 150 to 159 d. At 154 d gilts received 500 IU PMSG, followed 96 hr later by 250 IU hCG. Gilts were slaughtered at 163 days and their ovaries recovered to determine ovulatory status. In each treatment, gilts failed to show any ovarian response to PMSG/hCG. All remaining control gilts ovulated and their ovaries appeared morphologically normal. In gilts receiving exogenous growth hormone, fewer ovaries (4/11, P<.01) appeared morphologically normal. The ovaries of all other growth hormone injected gilts had very large (12–25 mm) non-luteinized follicles. In experiment two, 20 prepubertal Yorkshire × Landrace gilts were selected at 138 days and 85 kg BW. These gilts received injections of growth hormone at 90 μg/kg BW (n=9) or vehicle (n=11) from 138 to 147 days. At 143 days, all gilts were given an injection of estradiol benzoate (EB) at 15 μg/kg BW. Blood samples were taken at the time of EB injection, at 24 and 36 hr and then at 6 hr intervals until 78 hr. All samples were assayed for serum LH concentrations. The EB induced LH peak height was lower (P<.04) in gilts receiving exogenous growth hormone than in controls. The results presented indicate that the daily injection of growth hormone at 90 μg/kg BW reduced the estradiol-induced release of LH in addition to reducing the number of corpora lutea in gonadotrophin stimulated gilts.  相似文献

This study determined the seroprevalence of fasciolosis in equines (n = 140) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot. Blood samples were collected from different locations of the Black Sea Region of Turkey. The overall seroprevalence of fasciolosis in equines was 19.3%: 18% of horses (15), 22.6% of donkeys (7), and 19.2% of mules (5). The seroprevalence rates across provinces were as follows: 25% (5/20) in Samsun, 21.9% (7/32) in Tokat, 31.4% (11/35) in Amasya, 7.4% (2/27) in Ordu, and 7.7% (2/26) in Sinop. Three protein bands with molecular weights of 13, 30-40, and 40-65 kDa were determined in antigen clusters in sera from Fasciola spp-infected equine animals.  相似文献

Forty-eight prepubertal gilts (178.7 +/- 4.1 d; 94.2 +/- 4.1 kg), 16 in each of three trials, were assigned randomly to receive 0 (C) or 10 ppm zearalenone (Z) daily in 2.5 kg of a 14% protein finishing ration for 2 wk. Blood samples were collected at 20-min intervals for 4 h 1 wk after the start of the experiment and 1 wk after Z was withdrawn. Two weeks after Z was withdrawn, gilts were exposed to mature boars 15 min per day for 3 wk. Gilts in estrus were mated to two different boars 12 h apart. Twice each week, blood was sampled and analyzed for progesterone to establish age of puberty. Age at puberty differed (P = .008) among replicates but was similar (P = .13) between Z and C gilts within each replicate. Mean serum concentrations of LH were suppressed (P = .025) during consumption of Z (.25 vs .42 ng/ml) but were similar (P = .16) to concentrations in C gilts 1 wk after Z was withdrawn (.35 vs .45 ng/ml). Frequency and amplitude of LH secretory spikes did not differ (P greater than .50) between Z and C gilts during either sampling period. Mean serum concentrations of FSH were similar (P = .25) between Z and C gilts. Number of corpora lutea and live fetuses were similar (P = .29 and P = .94, respectively) between Z and C gilts. Fetal weights were greater (P = .025) and crown to rump length tended to be greater (P = .10) in fetuses from Z gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Eight poultry farms in Nigeria, including chickens from nine breeder, 14 broiler, 28 pullet, 11 layer, and three cockerel flocks, were tested for antibody seroprevalence to the following poultry viruses of potential economic importance: infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), avian reovirus, avian pneumovirus (APV), infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), avian influenza virus (AIV), and avian leukosis virus (ALV). Serum samples were collected between 1999 and 2004 and were tested for antibodies using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Seroprevalence was very high for IBV (84%); intermediate for reovirus (41%), APV (40%), and ILTV (20%); and very low for ALV (<5%) antibodies. By commercial ELISA, the seroprevalence of antibodies against AIV was, in some flocks, up to 63%. However, more specific assays did not confirm AIV antibodies, indicating that all flocks tested were free of avian influenza antibodies. Birds seemed to be first infected by IBV (at about 7 wk of age), then by reovirus at 12 wk, before they became infected by APV (week 25) and ILTV (week 30). This is the first report of serological evidence of the above viruses in West Africa. Further studies are necessary to assess economic losses due to these avian viruses and the costs and benefits of countermeasures.  相似文献

We investigated the relationship between the persistence of uterine bacterial infections with cytologically determined endometritis and ovarian function in 65 postpartum Holstein cows. Vaginal mucus discharges were collected, and endometrial smear samples (n = 130) were collected for cytological and bacteriological examinations from the cows at weeks 5 and 7 postpartum (pp). Blood samples were collected at weeks 3, 5 and 7 pp to determine plasma progesterone concentrations to monitor ovarian activity. According to the bacteriological examination, cows were classified into four groups. The first group (n = 32; 49%) comprised cows negative for bacteria at weeks 5 and 7 pp. The second group (n = 11; 17%) comprised cows with bacterial infections at week 5 pp but that were clear of infection at week 7 pp. The third group (n = 12; 19%) comprised cows without bacteria at week 5 pp but that acquired an infection by week 7 pp. The fourth group (n = 10; 15%) comprised cows with bacterial infections at weeks 5 and 7 pp (persistence of infection). A positive correlation (P < 0.001) was noted between the severity of cytologically determined endometritis, purulent vaginal discharge and the persistence of infection. Cows with persistent infections had a significantly (P < 0.01) prolonged luteal phase compared with cows without infection. In conclusion, the prevalence of cytologically determined endometritis and prolonged luteal phase were significantly increased in cows with persistent infections.  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of exogenous estradiol-17 beta (E2) administration on LH concentrations and the number of animals returning to estrus after the termination of pregnancy or pseudopregnancy in gilts. Gilts were mated (pregnant; n = 11) on the 1st d of estrus or received 5 mg of estradiol valerate i.m. at d 11 to 15 after the onset of estrus (pseudopregnant; n = 9). Gilts were treated with prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha, 15 and 10 mg) at 12-h intervals on d 44 of pregnancy or pseudopregnancy. The day of abortion or luteolysis (progesterone less than .2 ng/mL) was considered d 0. Six pregnant and four pseudopregnant gilts received s.c. an E2 capsule (24 mg of E2) on d -20 and additional E2 capsules on d -13 and -6. The E2 capsules were removed on the day after PGF2 alpha administration. Blood samples were collected at 12-h intervals from d -21 to -3, at 6-h intervals from d -2 to 21 or the onset of estrus, and at 15-min intervals for 8 h on d -2, 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, and 18. After each 8-h sampling period, gilts were treated i.v. with GnRH at .5 micrograms/kg of BW and blood samples collected at 10-min intervals for 3 h. A greater (P less than .05) proportion of sham-treated gilts than of E2-treated gilts exhibited a preovulatory-like LH surge after abortion/luteolysis. It was evident that E2 supplementation before luteolysis reduced the ability of pregnant and pseudopregnant gilts to return to estrus.  相似文献

A longitudinal study was undertaken in a newly established specific pathogen-free (SPF) swine herd to determine the dynamics of rotavirus antigen shedding in a closed swine facility. Pregnant SPF gilts which populated the herd, and their offspring, were monitored weekly for three consecutive lactations. Fecal samples were assayed for the presence of group-specific viral antigen by a solid phase immunoassay (ELISA). Results indicate that in the week prior to farrow, 35% of samples from gilts/sows contained rotavirus antigen. During nursing, 37% of the gilts'/sows' fecal samples also contained virus antigen. Over the course of three farrowings, every gilt/sow in the herd excreted virus antigen. Virus antigen was present in 25% of the samples tested from nursing pigs and in 70% of the samples tested from pigs in the postnursing period; 95% of the litters excreted virus antigen either while nursing or postweaning. Seasonal incidence in virus antigen excretion was noted with proportionally more suckling pigs virus antigen-positive in summer and proportionally more sows/gilts positive during winter. Diarrhea occurred only rarely in the sampled population. Although piglets shed rotavirus subclinically, ELISA positive feces from piglets of each lactation caused severe disease when fed to neonatal gnotobiotic pigs. Electropherotyping of these passaged viruses indicated minor variation in RNA banding patterns over time.  相似文献

It has been shown that zearalenone disrupts early pregnancy in swine without altering intrauterine content of estradiol 17 beta or progesterone, embryo migration, or estradiol-17 beta synthesis by blastocysts. However, serum concentrations of progesterone were reduced 2 to 3 weeks after mating in gilts that ingested zearalenone. Therefore, progesterone was administered to gilts during early pregnancy to determine whether it could counteract the detrimental actions of zearalenone on embryonic development. Thirty-two crossbred gilts (Hampshire x Chester White x Yorkshire x Duroc) were assigned randomly to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: zearalenone (Z); zearalenone plus progesterone (ZP); progesterone (P); or control (C). From postmating days 4 to 15, Z- and ZP-treated gilts were fed 1 mg of Z/kg of body weight, and P-treated and C gilts were fed ethanol as vehicle in a corn-soybean diet. On postmating days 3 to 15, P- and ZP-treated gilts were injected IM with 100 mg of progesterone, and C and Z-treated gilts were injected with progesterone carrier (15% ethanol, 15% benzyl alcohol, 70% propylene glycol). Blood was collected from gilts by puncture of the jugular vein daily from days 3 to 15, on alternate days from days 17 to 31, and then twice weekly until the end of the experiment. Fetal development was assessed in Z- and ZP-treated gilts on postmating day 47.6 +/- 2.9 by cesarean section and in P-treated and C gilts at slaughter on postmating days 51.2 +/- 3.2. Serum concentrations of progesterone in P-treated gilts were greater on days 7 to 8, 10 to 15, 17, and 19 than in C gilts. Serum concentrations of progesterone were greater on days 8, 10, and 12 in ZP-treated than in C gilts. However, serum concentrations of progesterone were lower in ZP-treated gilts than in C gilts on postmating days 19 to 31.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
