OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of acute haemorrhage on the QRS amplitude of the canine lead II surface electrocardiograph (ECG). DESIGN: Ten adult racing Greyhounds were tranquilised, anaesthetised, positioned in right lateral recumbency and connected to recording electrodes of an ECG unit. Baseline six-lead ECG traces were recorded, and further traces were obtained after one unit (460 mL) of blood, and then a second unit, were collected from the femoral artery. RESULTS: There was a consistent and progressive reduction in amplitude of the QRS complex in all leads during acute haemorrhage. QRS amplitude in lead II after removal of two units of blood averaged 74% of the baseline voltage, with individual values of 61 to 91% (P < 0.0001). There were even greater reductions in QRS amplitudes in lead aVL during haemorrhage. In three additional dogs, reductions in QRS voltages were shown to be accompanied by reductions in end-diastolic left ventricular internal dimensions measured echocardiographically. Furthermore, the effects of haemorrhage on the QRS amplitude and echocardiographic measurements were reversed when circulating blood volume was restored by re-infusion of blood removed previously. CONCLUSION: Acute haemorrhage corresponding to an approximately one-third reduction in blood volume caused a substantial reduction in QRS voltage of the surface ECG. It is postulated that this resulted from diminished ventricular distension as a consequence of reduced venous return. A similar mechanism may account for the small-amplitude ECG complexes associated with pericardial effusion, severe dehydration and hypovolaemia.  相似文献

Patients suffering from upper respiratory disease such as chronic nasal congestion, sneezing, nasal discharge, and epistaxis invite complete evaluation of their paired nasal cavities. Thorough assessment of these cavities employs sundry diagnostic procedures that enable the investigating clinician to characterize the internal structures of the nasal cavities. After the conscious patient undergoes a complete physical examination, a gross assessment of its external nasal structures is established and areas of physical asymmetry are noted. A working anatomic knowledge of these asymmetric foci helps to guide the next diagnostic steps. The patient is then placed under general anesthesia, during which, in list order, imaging studies, rhinoscopy, and nasal biopsy or foreign body retrieval, are performed.  相似文献

Two species of Hepatozoon are currently known to infect dogs and cause distinct diseases. Hepatozoon canis prevalent in Africa, Asia, southern Europe, South America and recently shown to be present also in the USA causes infection mainly of hemolymphoid organs, whereas Hepatozoon americanum prevalent in the southeastern USA causes myositis and severe lameness. H. americanum is transmitted by ingestion of the Gulf Coast tick Amblyomma maculatum and also by predation on infected prey. H. canis is transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus, in South America also by Amblyomma ovale, and has also been shown to be transmitted transplacentally. Hepatozoonosis of domestic cats has been described mostly from the same areas where canine infection is present and the exact identity of the species which infect cats, their pathogenicity and vectors have not been elucidated. The diagnosis of hepatozoonosis is made by observation of gamonts in blood smears, histopathology, PCR or serology. The main treatment for H. canis is with imidocarb dipropionate whereas H. americanum infection is treated with an initial combination of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine, pyrimethamine and clindamycin followed by maintenance with decoquinate. Treatment for both diseases has not been reported to facilitate complete parasite elimination and new effective drugs are needed for the management of these infections. Prevention of hepatozoonosis should be based on avoidance of oral ingestion of infected tick vectors and infected prey.  相似文献

Although the normal cornea is devoid of vasculature and lymphatics, there are still several immune-mediated corneal conditions that can occur in dogs and cats. An overview of corneal immunology is presented. Diseases of dogs, including chronic superficial keratitis, superficial punctate keratitis, and canine adenovirus endotheliitis, as well as feline diseases, including eosinophilic keratitis and herpesvirus-related conditions, are discussed.  相似文献

A semiautomatic electronic blood cell counter (Sysmex F-800:Toa Medical Electronics Europa Gmbh, Hamburg, Germany) was evaluated using canine and feline blood, following the International Committee for Standardization in Hematology protocol (ICSH, 1984). Precision and overall reproducibility were acceptable for all the parameters studied except for the feline platelet count, in which overlapping of erythrocyte and platelet populations prohibited determination of an accurate platelet count. Since carry-over from canine hematocrit values and platelet counts and from feline hematocrit values was unsatisfactory, the use of a blank diluent sample between different analyses was necessary. Linearity of the analyzer was acceptable in the studied range. Thirty canine and feline blood samples were analyzed using the Sysmex F-800 and a manual method. Correlations between both methods were acceptable for all the parameters, except for feline platelet count and erythrocyte indices for both species. In the storage study, red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration were the parameters with the longest stability (72 hours at 4 degrees C and 25 degrees C) in both species. A statistically significant increase in MCV was obtained at 12 hours post-extraction in canine samples stored at 25 degrees C and at 24 hours in refrigerated samples. Feline leucocyte counts showed a downward trend at 12 hours post-extraction at both temperatures. Canine platelet count decreased significantly at 6 hours post-extraction in samples stored at 4 degrees C. During the evaluation period, Sysmex F-800 was user friendly and appeared well suited for routine canine and feline blood cell analysis.  相似文献

Microbiology of the canine and feline eye   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Knowledge of the microbiology of the canine and feline eye in normal and pathologic states is an important aspect of the clinician's assessment of external ocular disease. Gram-positive bacteria predominate in surveys of microbial flora in normal and diseased eyes. These same organisms are routinely isolated from skin and the upper respiratory tract. Injury to the eye may result in proliferation and potential pathogenicity of normal ocular flora. A variety of bacterial, fungal, viral, and other microbial isolates affect the diagnosis and treatment of external ocular disease.  相似文献

Pathology of the canine and feline uterine tube   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lesions of the uterine tube were described in 37 dogs and nine cats. Of the 52 lesions noted, 18 were developmental abnormalities; four paramesonephric remnants, and 14 mesonephric remnants. Uterine tube cysts were seen in 16 animals, and seven animals had salpingitis. One dog had hyperplastic changes of the infundibular mucosa, and one cat and one dog demonstrated adenomyosis. There were three primary benign uterine tube neoplasms, one adenocarcinoma, two metastatic neoplasms in the uterine tube, and two bursal lipomas, all in dogs. With the exception of neoplasia of the uterine tube, most lesions were unlikely to affect the reproductive performance of these animals and/or were incidental or secondary to disorders elsewhere in the reproductive tract.  相似文献

Systemic fungal diseases cause significant morbidity and mortality in dogs and cats. Blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, coccidiomycosis, and cryptococcosis represent the four most common systemic fungal diseases. Young adult, large breed dogs generally are predisposed; cats usually do not have predictable predispositions. Intact cell-mediated immunity is essential to initial resistance to infection and response to treatment in animals. Several body systems can be affected. Diagnosis can be confirmed on the basis of clinical signs and demonstration of the causative organism. Serology is helpful with coccidiomycosis and cryptococcosis. Treatment is complicated by limited availability of fungicidal antimicrobials and the necessity of long-term treatment with expensive drugs.  相似文献
