Vitamin E is an essential antioxidant that may benefit athletes by reducing oxidative stress and influencing cytokine expression. Supplements can be derived from natural or manufactured synthetic sources. This study aimed to determine (1) if supplemental vitamin E is beneficial to exercising horses and (2) if there is a benefit of natural versus synthetic vitamin E. After 2 weeks on the control diet (vitamin E–deficient grain and hay), 18 horses were divided into three groups and fed the control diet plus (1) 1000 IU/d synthetic α-tocopherol (SYN-L), (2) 4000 IU/d synthetic α-tocopherol (SYN-H), or (3) 4000 IU/d RRR-α-tocopherol (natural source [NAT]). On day 7, horses began a 6-week training protocol, with standard exercise tests (SETs) performed before and after the 6-week protocol. Venous blood samples were collected on days 0, 7, 29, and 49. Horses fed NAT had higher α-tocopherol (P < .05) at post-SET1 through post-SET2. Plasma thiobarbituric acid–reactive substance levels were lower in NAT versus SYN-L horses after SET2 (P = .02). Serum aspartate aminotransferase was lower after exercise in NAT horses versus SYN-L and SYN-H (P = .02), and less reduction in stride duration was seen after exercise in NAT as compared with SYN-L and SYN-H (P = .02). Gene expression of tumor necrosis factor α was lower in NAT compared with SYN-H (P = .01) but not SYN-L. In conclusion, feeding higher levels of natural vitamin E source resulted in higher serum α-tocopherol levels as well as some improvement in oxidative and inflammatory response and improved functional outcomes in response to an exercise test.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of acupuncture (AG) treatment on some hematochemical parameters in five Thoroughbred horses after road transport and exercise. Horses competed in two official races. For each race, animals were transported from their stables to the racetrack. Horses transported and competed in the first race represent the control group. Two weeks later, the same horses competed in the second race. Before road transport, they were treated with AG. From animals, blood samples were collected at rest (TPRE), after unloaded (TPOST), 30 minutes after unloaded (TPOST30), at rest in the transit stall (RPRE), at the end of the race (RPOST), and 30 minutes after the race (RPOST30). The effect of transport, exercise, and AG was evaluated on blood lactate, glucose, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) values. A significant effect of transport (P < .05) and exercise (P < .01) was found on all studied parameters in both groups. A significant effect of AG on lactate, glucose, and EOF values was found in transported (P < .001) and exercised horses (P < .05). The results found in this study showed that transport and exercise are potential stressors for the athlete horse that may affect its welfare and physical performance. The data suggest that AG stimulation promoted the increase of blood glucose values and the reduction of lactate and EOF levels suggesting its role in the improvement of the physiological adaptation to stressful stimuli and of physical performance of Thoroughbred horses.  相似文献

Ten horses were paired by body weight, age, and skill level, and one of each pair was assigned to one of two groups. Horses were fed alfalfa hay and a mixture of commercial sweet feed and pellets. Horses in group A were fed fescue seed that contained both ergovaline and ergotamine (E+), whereas those in the other group were fed seed that was free from ergot alkaloids (E−). After the first 35 days, horses were switched to the opposite seed treatment. Seed was fed at 8.2% of the diet, resulting in 406 ppb of ergotamine plus ergovaline in the E+ diet. During weeks 3, 5, 7, and 10, horses were subjected to two separate standardized exercise tests (SETs). The aerobic test consisted of walking, trotting, and loping and was designed to maintain horse's heart rate (HR) to less than 150 beats per minute (bpm). The anaerobic test consisted of 40 turns in less than 4 minutes in response to the movements of a mechanical cow and was designed to increase the horse's HR to more than 150 bpm. There were no treatment effects on water consumption or sweat production. There were also no treatment effects on rectal temperature at rest or during recovery from the anaerobic SET. However, rectal temperatures were higher (P < .05) 1 and 30 minutes after the aerobic SET for horses consuming E+ seed. When horses were on the E+ treatment, HRs were lower (P < .05), both at rest and during the SET. HRs were also lower (P < .05) for the E+ treatment at 1 minute after the aerobic test and 5 and 10 minutes after the anaerobic test. Respiration rates were higher (P < .05) 30 minutes after the aerobic SET and 30 and 60 minutes after the anaerobic SET for the E+ treatment. Horses may have increased respiration rates to compensate for a reduction in the efficiency of evaporative cooling, which resulted from vasoconstriction of peripheral blood vessels.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine the influence of season (winter, spring, summer, and fall) on travel patterns, hoof growth, and longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) height and fat thickness between 13th and 14th ribs in 16 horses aged <4 years (eight males and eight females) of Morgan, Quarter Horse, and Moriesian breeds. Real-time ultrasound images of LM height and fat thickness as well as measures of hoof growth were obtained at the end of each season. Global positioning system tracking was conducted for four randomly selected days and one storm day in each season. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed model procedure in SAS. Season influenced fat deposition (P < .01) with the greatest increase in fall (P < .05) but had minimal effect on muscle growth. Hoof growth was greatest in summer and least in winter (P < .01). The average distance traveled was greater in spring and summer than in fall and winter (P < .01). The horses moved for less time and traveled less distance on storm days (P < .05) compared with nonstorm days. Young horses also traveled less on storm days, which indicates that it may be especially important to provide shelter for them. It was concluded that season influenced fat deposition, distance traveled, and hoof growth of domestic young horses. A better understanding of these factors could help equine professionals manage young horses more efficiently to benefit the horses’ physical well-being.  相似文献

Saddle–horse interaction is increasingly linked with back pain, performance, and welfare issues. Saddle fit and work quality influence alterations in back shape with exercise at thoracic vertebra 13 level (T13) with exercise. The objectives of experiments were to: determine a repeatable zone and stride point of peak pressure under saddles fitted to industry guidelines; compare peak pressure in this zone and limb kinematics in collected trot between horses own saddles (S) and a saddle designed to reduce pressure at T10–T13 (F); compare thoracolumbar width change after exercise between S and F and with F after 3 months use. Elite dressage (n = 13) horses/riders with no lameness/performance problem had pressure mat data acquired under S, fitted by four qualified saddle fitters, to determine zones of peak pressure. Pressure mat data at T10–T13, forelimb/hindlimb protraction, and carpal/tarsal flexion acquired using simultaneous high-speed motion capture, and difference in thoracolumbar dimensions (T8, T18 at 3, 15 cm) between before and after exercise was compared between S and F. Peak pressures were consistently detected axially around T10–T13 (sensors A4–A7, H4–H7). Peak pressures were significantly less with F than S for each cell and pooled (55%–68% difference. P = .01 to <.0001). Saddle F was associated with 13% greater forelimb and 22.7% hindlimb protraction, 3.5° greater carpal and 4.3° tarsal flexion (P = .02 to .0001), and greater increase in thoracolumbar dimensions after exercise (P = .01 to <.0001). Saddles fitted to published guidelines may still have a nonideal interface with horses. Reducing peak pressures around T10–T13 was associated with improved limb kinematics in trot and greater thoracolumbar expansion after exercise.  相似文献

Nine adult geldings were used in three experiments to study the possible role of substance P in the prolactin responses to nondopaminergic stimuli. Experiment 1 was performed as an incomplete Latin square design to determine the secretory responses of prolactin, growth hormone (GH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to IV administration of substance P. Doses tested and compared to no peptide (0 dose, control) were 62, 125, 250, and 500 μg of substance P. The three highest doses of peptide caused an immediate rise in heart rate, sweating, salivation, rhinorrhea, stretching of hind legs, and defecation. The lowest dose (62 μg) caused minor sweating, some rhinorrhea, and a rise in heart rate. Recovery from these physical responses was complete in approximately 30 minutes. All doses of substance P caused an immediate rise (P < .01) in plasma prolactin concentrations, with the three highest doses producing similar responses, and the 62 μg dose producing a minimal response (P < .05). Concentrations of ACTH (P < .01) and GH (P = .05) also increased after substance P administration; concentrations of LH, FSH, and TSH were unaffected. Experiment 2 compared the effects of brief exercise on hormonal characteristics. Two minutes of trotting increased (P < .01) plasma concentrations of GH, ACTH, and prolactin, as well as LH (P = .055). Experiment 3 determined the relative responses of prolactin to a fixed dose of sulpiride (0.1 mg/kg of body weight). In general, the prolactin responses to substance P were similar to those after exercise, which were both generally less than after sulpiride. These data are consistent with a possible role of substance P in the prolactin response to stressful stimuli.  相似文献

Despite the range of oral joint supplements available, there has been very limited research into their efficacy. The study aimed to determine the effect of an oral joint supplement on limb kinematics, orthopedic, physiotherapy, and handler evaluation in horses. Supplement S or placebo P was fed to 24 horses for 21 days each in a random order. Horses were evaluated at days 0 (baseline), 21 (after first treatment), and 42 (after second treatment). Assessments included the following: clinical orthopedic evaluation for straight line/lunging circle in walk and trot; high-speed motion capture determined hindlimb kinematics for straight-line trotting; grading of limb range of motion (ROM) and muscle tone based on standardized physiotherapy criteria; handler grading of specific criteria during pasture, groundwork, and ridden exercise. Effect of treatment, sequence, limb, and interactions were investigated using linear-mixed models. S was associated with significantly lower lameness grade in a straight line (P = .001) and circle (P = .010), with individual horses improving up to 2/10 grades over P/baseline. S was associated with significantly improved ROM and muscle tone. Ridden/groundwork scores were significantly higher with S compared to P/baseline. With S, horses were graded significantly higher for “ease of movement” at pasture compared with P/baseline. For horses with hindlimb lameness, S was associated with significantly greater tarsal flexion than baseline (4.2% greater, P < .020) or P (2.7% greater, P < .037). S was associated with less lameness and improved physiotherapy scores, ridden/groundwork scores, and pasture “ease of movement.” Increased midstance tarsal flexion of lame limbs may indicate improved mobility/comfort during peak loading, supporting a positive effect of S.  相似文献

This study evaluated the osteoanagenetic effects of administering biodegradable gelatin β-tri calcium phosphate sponges containing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) on equine bone defect. Six healthy Thoroughbred horses were used in this study. Horses were anesthetized, and skin incisions were made on all the limbs. Splint bones were exposed and a 1-cm bone defect was created in each exposed bone. Gelatin β-tri calcium phosphate sponges containing MSC and BMP-2 (MSC + BMP-2 sponge), MSC only (MSC sponge), BMP-2 only (BMP-2 sponge), or saline (saline sponge) were implanted into each bone defect at random. Defects were monitored for 16 weeks by radiography followed by computed tomography (CT) and histologic analyses. At 16 weeks, radiographic scores of MSC + BMP-2 sponge-treated defects were significantly higher than those of saline-treated defects (P = .027). Moreover, the CT value of the MSC + BMP-2 sponge group was significantly higher than that of the other groups (P = .027; P = .046; and P = .027, respectively), and the histologic score of the MSC + BMP-2 sponge group was significantly greater than that of the saline sponge group (P = .041). We conclude that MSC + BMP-2 sponge administration to bone defects accelerates bone regeneration in equines.  相似文献

The study objective was to determine if there was a relationship between behavioral and physiological stress measures in sport horses and their performance. Nineteen horses competed in show jumping events (6 housed at the center and 13 transported), while 5 horses at home training served as controls. The competition horses were assigned to “light” (obstacles ≤100 cm) and “difficult” class (obstacles >100 cm). The conflict behaviors (CBs/min) in two rounds were calculated. Total faults were classified as “less faults” (≤one fault) or “more faults” (>one fault). Salivary cortisol concentration (SCC) before the first round (SCC-SP1), 20 minutes (SCC-SP2), and 60 minutes after the second round (SCC-SP3) was measured. The increase (SCC-in) and decrease (SCC-dec) in SCC were calculated. No effect of competition was found. Horses that waited longer for the second round had greater CB (P < .05). Conflict behavior was more frequent in horses from the “more faults” (P = .05) and “difficult” (a tendency; P = .06) classes. No correlation of CB with SCC was found. SCC-SP2 was greater in “more faults” (P < .01) and “transported” (P < .01) horses. Competition increased the SCC (P < .05), whereas SCC-SP2 was greater in less successful horses (P < .05). Transported horses and horses with more faults had the greatest SCC-SP2 and SCC-dec (P < .05). Our results suggest that horses which presented stress response were also less successful in competition. The adoption of effective methods to reduce transport and competition stress could enhance welfare and performance of sport horses during competition.  相似文献

This study compares the circulating adrenocorticotrophin hormone (ACTH), cortisol, lactate, glucose, heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, and blood count values in initially 2-year-old horses subjected to dressage training schedule during three consecutive days per 2 weeks. Sixteen healthy Friesian horses were used and were considered dressage group. Six healthy young horses not involved in training programs were used as control group. Blood sampling were collected from the jugular vein in baseline condition (dressage group and control group) and after exercise, within 5 minutes of the end of the training session (dressage group). Compared to baseline values, results showed higher ACTH concentrations after the first day of the first training week (P < .005) and after the third day of the second week (P < .005); higher lactate concentrations after the second and the third day of the second week (P < .01); lower glucose concentrations after the third day of the first week (P < .01); higher HR, RR, and RT values and lower PLT count after different time points during both training weeks. One-way ANOVA showed significant training effect for ACTH (F = 7.605; P < .0001) and glucose (F = 3.505; P < .001) concentrations over time points. Two-way ANOVA showed a significant effect of dressage training sessions between the first and the second week for ACTH (F = 6.508; P < .001) and cortisol (F = 5.559; P < .0001) concentrations. From obtained data, it seems that the use of ACTH and cortisol changes for the assessment of effects of training in initially 2-year-old horses could be an ideal measure of quantitative and qualitative stress responses. The quantification at the same time of functional responses to stressful stimuli may offer a more objective measurement of dressage training effects.  相似文献

The equine industry has a need for a convenient, rapid, and reliable method of measuring blood lactate concentrations ([LA]). We hypothesized that the handheld Lactate Plus lactate meter (LPlus), developed and tested for use in humans, would provide dependable results when used in horses undergoing an exercise conditioning program and that horse's fitness would improve following individualized conditioning based on each horse's velocity at which [LA] = 4 mmol/L (VLA4) was reached. Five adult horses underwent a 4-week training program that consisted of 3 exercise bouts/wk. Horses were subjected to an incremental step standardized exercise test (SET) before starting (SET-1) and after the completion of the program (SET-2). Blood samples were collected before each increase in speed until [LA] reached ≥4 mmol/L, and then the SET was terminated. The [LA] sample range in our study was 0–8 mmol/L. Blood was analyzed at the time of collection using a calibrated LPlus, and plasma was collected for [LA] determination using the lactate dehydrogenase–based enzymatic colorimetric method. Although the LPlus tended to significantly underestimate [LA] by 0.39 mmol/L (P < .001), the LPlus proved to be a dependable device for use in horses based on good correlation with the biochemical analysis (r = 0.978) and Bland–Altman limits of agreement and 95% confidence intervals. All horses showed an increase in VLA4 from SET-1 to SET-2, consistent with improved fitness following our 3 exercise bout/wk training protocol. The LPlus can reliably be used in horses to determine [LA] ranging from 0–8 mmol/L. When determining serial [LA], analytical techniques should not be used interchangeably.  相似文献

The hypothesis of this study was that yearlings would have more oxidative stress as measured by malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (GSH-T), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and nitric oxide (NO) than mature mares before training, but after they would have similar levels. Ten Standardbred yearling fillies and 10 mature Standardbred mares were split into trained and nontrained groups. Horses were trained 5 days/wk for 7 weeks. Blood and muscle samples were collected at rest on weeks 0, 2, 5, 7, and 9. At week 0, the yearlings had higher muscle GSH-T and NO concentrations (P = .03) than the trained mares. At week 9, plasma NO concentrations were lower in trained mares than in the trained yearlings (P = .007). Trained mares increased muscle MDA and decreased plasma MDA concentrations from weeks 0 to 9 (P < .01), while all mares increased muscle NO and GSH-T concentrations by week 9 (P < .05). Trained mares and yearlings had increased erythrocyte GPx activity at weeks 7 and 9 and GSH-T concentration at week 7 (P < .05). Mares had higher lipid peroxidation and lower antioxidant status in the muscle than the yearlings prior to training. Trained mares improved antioxidant status and oxidative stress levels through training, resulting in levels similar to the yearlings.  相似文献

High insulin concentrations are a common clinical feature of equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and insulin dysregulation. Hyperinsulinemia can induce laminitis, so reduction of insulin concentrations in response to an oral challenge should decrease risk. In human studies, diets containing a polyphenol (resveratrol) led to improvements in insulin sensitivity. In rodents, the addition of leucine to a resveratrol supplement caused a decrease in the amount of resveratrol needed to achieve a clinical effect. We hypothesize a supplementation with a low dose of a synergistic polyphenol and amino acid blend including leucine (SPB+L) would improve metabolic health in EMS/insulin dysregulated horses. Fifteen EMS/ID horses received a high or low dose of SPB+ L daily for 6 weeks. Insulin during an oral sugar test (OST), body condition score, weight, baseline high-molecular-weight (HMW) adiponectin, triglycerides, nonesterified fatty acids, and tumor necrosis factor alpha were assessed before supplementation (PRE) and after supplementation (POST) via paired Student’s t-tests and a repeated-measures mixed-model analysis of variance (significant at P < .05). There were no differences between doses. Horses in the POST group weighed significantly less, had significantly higher baseline HMW adiponectin concentrations, and had significantly lower insulin concentrations at 60- and 75-minute time points (P < .05). Insulin concentrations of the horsesin the POST group, but not in the PRE group, were lower and similar to results from the study conducted three years before the present study (PRIOR) for 0- and 60-minute time points (P < .002). An increased HMW adiponectin level supports increasing insulin sensitivity after supplementation. These results suggest that SPB + L supplementation at either dose leads to improvements in the clinical manifestations of EMS/insulin dysregulation, potentially reducing laminitis risk.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of physical, hematological, and biochemical parameters after acute intense exercise in polo horses playing in an outdoor international competition. The game consisted of four periods (chukkas) and each period consisted a playing time of 7 minutes. Two matches were played everyday for a week. A total of 12 horses were examined. Each “high-goal” polo horse played one chukka a day for 4 days. Horses were clinically examined the day before the games started and then daily during the 4 days of their participation in the games. During these days, physical examination was performed and blood sample was collected at rest (T0), immediately (T1) after exercise, and after 30 minutes of exercise (T2). Blood samples were analyzed for total cell counts and for determination of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase, lactate, total proteins, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus , and cortisol. Data were evaluated using two-way analysis of variance. Exercise caused significant dehydration (P < .01), mucous membranes congestion, increased heart rate (P < .001), and capillary refill time (P < .001). It also caused increased value of the following parameters: hematocrit (P < .001), red blood cells (P < .001), hemoglobin (P < .001), white blood cells (P < .05), lymphocyte (P < .001), total proteins (P < .001), creatine kinase (P < .05), LDH (P < .01), lactate (P < .001), and cortisol (P < .01), and a decrease in the platelet count (P < .001), calcium (P < .01), phosphorus (P < .001), and magnesium (P < .001). All parameters returned within or near the reference range by 30 minutes postexercise. On the basis of these observations, data were considered indicative of a good response to an acute intense exercise. Moreover statistical results obtained were typical of a mixed aerobic/anaerobic metabolic pathway that is prevailing in this sport.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effect of age on serum protein fractions and their relationship with metabolic and hematological profiles in mature horses. Twenty-five mature Italian Saddle horses (mean age 13.6 ± 4.8 years) fed the same diet (grass hay and concentrate) were stratified according to age as first maturity, M1 (≤10 years old); second maturity, M2 (>10 and <15 years old); and old, O (>15 years), to be monitored every 28 days for a continuous period of 140 days. Horses in group O had higher plasma protein and thiol concentrations and white blood cell and neutrophil counts than the other two groups. Serum α2-globulin concentrations were positively correlated with total plasma cholesterol (r = 0.514; P < .001), alkaline phosphatase (r = 0.430; P < .001), aspartate aminotransferase (r = 0.339; P < .001), ceruloplasmin (r = 0.321; P < .001), glutamic pyruvate transaminase (r = 0.444; P < .001), reactive oxygen metabolites (r = 0.426; P < .001), and blood neutrophil counts (r = 0.344; P < .01), and negatively with plasma bilirubin (r = −0.522; P < .001) and creatinine (r = −0.400; P < .001). These results suggest differences in hematological and metabolic profile in Italian Saddle horses after 15 years of age, resulting mainly from changes in plasma proteins and inflammatory mediators. The α2-globulins fraction seems a quick but reliable marker of an inflammatory situation that, successively, should be better investigated with specific metabolites or enzymes.  相似文献

Gymkhana is an equestrian event consisting of speed pattern racing and timed games for riders on horses. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of gymkhana competition on total cortisol and total and free iodothyronine changes in 23 Arabian purebred horses, by taking into account the effects of previous sport experience on gymkhana riding events. Compared with pre-competition values, an increase of total cortisol concentration has been observed in experienced horses at 30 minutes (P < .001) after exercise and in inexperienced horses both at 5 minutes (P < .05) and at 30 minutes (P < .01) after exercise. Compared with pre-competition values, an increase of total triiodothyronine (T3) concentration has been observed in experienced horses at 5 minutes (P < .05) after exercise. Data obtained showed that gymkhana riding events induced differential adrenocortical and thyroid responsiveness according to previous experience of sport horses. Hence, cortisol and iodothyronine patterns may provide additional information for the monitoring of gymkhana riding performance.  相似文献

The negative impact of equine dystocia on hematological and serum biochemical profile of neonatal foals remains unknown, particularly in heavy draft horses that show high incidence of dystocia. This study aimed to reveal the hematological and serum biochemical profile of the foals born in normal delivery and examine the effect of dystocia on blood properties in heavy draft newborn foals. In the normal birth group (n = 23), stage II labor was <30 minutes, with spontaneous or assisted delivery with mild traction by one or two people. In the dystocia group (n = 13), stage II labor was ≥30 minutes, with strong traction by more than three people or mechanical tools with or without correcting fetal displacement. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at 0, 1, and 12 hours and 1 and 2 days after foaling. Red blood cells, hemoglobin concentration, and packed cell volume remained significantly lower in the dystocia group than in the normal birth group. The white blood cell count was significantly higher in dystocia foals (1 day: P < .05). Dystocia foals had significantly higher cortisol (1 hour: P < .05), urea nitrogen (1 hour: P < .05), and creatine kinase activities (1 hour: P < .01, 12 hours: P < .05). This study revealed that dystocia foals were more likely to be affected by anemia, physical stress, and muscle damage than normal birth foals.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to evaluate in vitro effects of equine fecal inocula fermentative capacity on 9 fibrous forages in the presence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The fibrous feeds were corn stover (Zea mays), oat straw (Avena sativa), sugarcane bagasse and leaves (Saccharum officinarum), llanero grass leaves (Andropogon gayanus), Taiwan grass leaves (Pennisetum purpureum), sorghum straw (Sorghum vulgare), and steria grass leaves (Cynodon plectostachyus). Fibrous feed samples were incubated with several doses of S. cerevisiae; 0 (control), 1.25 (low), 2.5 (medium) and 5 (high) mg/g dry matter (DM) of a commercial yeast product containing 1 × 1010/g. Fecal inoculum was collected from 4 adult horses were fed on an amount of commercial concentrate and oat hay ad libitum. Gas production (GP) was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, and 48 hours post inoculation. An interaction occurred between feeds and yeast dose for fecal pH (P < .01), asymptotic GP (b, ml/g DM); rate of GP (c, /hr); initial delay before GP began (L, hours), GP at 4 hours and 48 hours (P < .01), and GP at 8 hours (P < .01) and at 24 hours (P < .01). Differences in fecal fermentation capacity between the tropical and template grass (P < .05) occurred for fecal pH, c, and GP during first 12 hours, whereas differences occurred (P < .05) between the agriculture byproducts and the grasses for fecal pH, b, and GP from 8 to 48 hours. Fermentation capacity between straws versus not straws (P < .05) differed for fecal pH, b, and GP after 12 hours between straws versus not straws. Addition of S. cerevisiae to Z. mays stover reduced (P < .01) fecal pH and the c fraction with a higher (P < .01) b fraction versus the other feeds. From 4 to 24 hours, S. officinarum bagasse improved GP to the highest values versusS. officinarum leaves. After 24 hours, Z. mays stover had the highest GP, whereas C. plectostachyus leaves had the lowest. There were no differences among the yeast doses for all measured parameters with the exception of L values (linear effect; P < .01). The Z. mays stover had the highest nutritive compared to the other fibrous feeds. However, addition of S. cerevisiae at 2.5 to 5.0 g/kg DM improved fecal fermentation capacity of low-quality forages.  相似文献

Six mature Quarter Horse geldings (age, 11.5 ± 4.7 years; body weight [BW], 526 ± 9.2 kg) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design to determine the effects of three dietary lysine (Lys) levels on nitrogen (N) retention and plasma amino acid (AA) concentrations. The geldings were fed a basal diet of concentrate and Bermuda grass hay supplemented with synthetic essential amino acids (EAA) to meet estimated requirements for EAA. Geldings were fed one of three dietary treatments: (1) a basal diet deficient in Lys (L−; 0.027 g of Lys•kg−1 BW•d−1); (2) a basal diet supplemented with synthetic Lys to meet National Research Council (NRC; 2007) requirements (L+; 0.036 g of Lys•kg−1 BW•d−1); or (3) a basal diet supplemented at twice the recommended Lys requirement (2 × L; 0.070 g Lys•kg−1 BW•d−1). Horses fed the 2 × L diet had higher N intakes (P = .0056) than horses fed either the L− or L+ diet. However N retention (P = .63) was not different between treatments. Plasma Lys was greater (P < .0001) in 2 × L than L− and L+ diets. Plasma threonine (Thr; P < .01), methionine (Met; P = .03), and total plasma non-EAA (P < .05) concentrations decreased as dietary Lys increased. These results suggest N retention is not a good response criterion for evaluating the AA requirements of mature horses. However, plasma AA data indicated more efficient use of Thr and Met when horses were fed dietary Lys in concentrations greater than the current requirement recommended by the Nutrient Requirements of Horses (National Research Council, 2007).  相似文献

Obesity has become of great concern to all equine community from both veterinary and welfare points of view. For estimating obesity markers of brood mares, 17 mares with body conditions were subjected to blood sampling and ultrasound examination to measure rump fat for 6 consecutive weeks. Body length (L), girth (G), and height (H) were measured to estimate body weight (BW), body fat %, body fat mass (BFM) and body mass index (BMI). Mares were classified into three groups according to body condition score (BCS) and rump fat thickness (RF). Overweight mares (O) had BCS >7 and RF >7 mm, moderate (M) had BCS and RF >3 to ≤7, and emaciated (E) had BCS and RF ≤ 3 mm. Glucose, triglycerides, nitric oxide (NO), insulin, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1), leptin, ovarian hormones, and thyroid hormones were measured. Results revealed that BCS, G, L, L × G × H, BW, RF, fat %, and BFM correlated significantly (P < .0001) with body condition. Tetraiodothyronine concentrations of E mares were significantly high (P = .04), but triiodothyronine concentrations tended (P = .07) to be low. Insulin (P = .06) and IGF-1 (P = .07) concentrations tended to be high in O mares. Moderate mares had the highest leptin concentrations (P = .007), but E mares had the lowest P4 concentrations (P = .01). Overweight mares had nonsignificantly high glucose, NO, and triglycerides. In conclusion, back fat and morphometric measurements are the easiest and simple assessment of overweight and obesity. Obese and overweight mares showed slight hyperinsulinemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia. Hyperleptinemia alone is not indicative of obesity.  相似文献
