One hundred and sixty turkeys of both sexes of a small‐ and a large‐bodied strain were allotted at random to high and low energy diets in each of four trials. Weight and food consumption were measured weekly on individual birds between 6 1/2 and 20 1/2 weeks of age. Results were summarised for the periods represented by the age periods, 8 to 12 and 17 to 20 weeks of age.

Gain appeared to be more dependent on food intake than on body surface area. However, food intake was dependent upon both gain and body surface area but, on the basis of standardised partial regressions, slightly more dependent on the former. Partial regressions also indicated that gain was slightly more dependent on food intake than vice versa.

There was little effect on gain due to sex or strain after correction for food intake and surface area. Correspondingly, correction for gain and surface area accounted for most of the sums of squares associated with strain and sex where food and caloric intake were dependent variables.

Efficiency of food utilisation was more dependent on gain than surface area. However, covariance techniques were not as effective in adjusting means as in the cases of gain and either food or caloric intake.  相似文献

A deterministic model was developed that accounted for all biological inputs and outputs for a theoretical herd of F1 females at age equilibrium mated to produce three-way terminal-cross calves and for the required proportion of straightbred cows needed to produce replacements. Two Bos indicus x Bos taurus vs two Bos taurus x Bos taurus types of crossbred cows were compared in the production environment of south-central Nebraska. The four types of F1 females were from Hereford (H) or Angus (A) dams and by H or A (HA), Pinzgauer (Pz), Brahman (Bm), or Sahiwal (Sw) sires. The crossbred females were assumed mated to Red Poll (R) sires for their first calving and to Simmental (S) sires thereafter. Two evaluations of efficiency for each of the four breeding systems were total cow and calf feed energy input 1) per unit of only weaned calf weight output (CALFEFF, Mcal/kg) and 2) per unit of weaned calf plus .55 x cull cow weight output (TVALEFF, Mcal/kg). Results for a terminal age of 7 yr in systems using HA, Pz, Bm, and Sw crossbred cows, respectively, were 64.9, 64.5, 60.9, and 59.3 Mcal/kg for CALFEFF and 45.7, 46.4, 44.1, and 43.7 Mcal/kg for TVALEFF. Changing terminal age to 11 yr reduced CALFEFF about 6% but increased TVALEFF about 7%, because total inputs increased more than output value (10 vs 3%) from 7 to 11 yr terminal ages. These results suggest differences in efficiency among these breed crosses favoring the Bos indicus crossbred cows by over 4% in this particular environment.  相似文献

Biological efficiency of beef production to weaning and to slaughter was estimated in three groups of cattle reasonably similar in growth and mature size but different in the amount of milk available to the calves (low (L) = Hereford x Angus, medium (M) = Red Poll x Angus and high (H) = Milking Shorthorn x Angus). Efficiency was defined as the ratio of estimated kilograms of calf weight weaned or carcass weight produced by a herd of 100 first-cross cows to estimated metabolizable energy (ME) intake by the cows and preweaning non-milk ME intake by the calves or preweaning non-milk and postweaning ME intake by the calves. Efficiencies were estimated assuming observed and average reproductive rates, and using observed energy requirements for maintenance, as well as the same requirements for maintenance in the M and H groups. With the observed reproductive rates and requirements for maintenance, efficiencies to weaning and to slaughter were 28.1, 27.4 and 27.4 g weaning weight per Mcal ME and 22.0, 20.6 and 20.3 g carcass weight per Mcal ME for the L, M and H groups, respectively. With average requirements for maintenance, efficiencies were 28.2 and 27.5 to weaning and 20.8 and 20.4 to slaughter for the M and H groups, respectively. Under equal reproductive rates and observed maintenance requirements, efficiencies were 28.3, 27.2 and 27.7 to weaning, and 22.1, 20.6 and 20.6 to slaughter for the L, M and H groups, respectively. With average maintenance requirements, efficiencies were 27.5 and 27.4 to weaning and 20.7 and 20.5 to slaughter for the M and H groups, respectively. Across the production output and input assumption scenarios, the L group consistently was the most efficient, especially when evaluated at slaughter of calves.  相似文献

Effect of milk yield (MY) on biological efficiency and gross margin as an indicator of profit potential of beef production from birth to slaughter was determined. Data included 9 yr of spring-born single male calves. Biological efficiency was calculated as carcass weight/total feed energy intake, including nonlactating and lactating intakes of cow and creep and feedlot intakes of calf. Slaughter end point was finish constant at 9 mm of fat thickness. Gross margin was determined as returns minus feed costs. Three breeding systems were analyzed: purebred Hereford (HE), large rotational (LR), and small rotational (SR). Analyses were performed separately by breeding system when differences in the effect of MY among breeding systems were significant. Increased MY was associated with increased preweaning gain (P < .001), increased weight at start of feedlot trial (P < .001), and increased hot carcass weight (P < .05). No significant (P > .10) effect of MY on age at slaughter or on carcass weight per day of age at slaughter was found. Increased MY was associated with increased cow lactating energy intake (P < .10) and negatively associated with calf creep intake (P < .01). No effects of MY on intake of the cow during the nonlactating period, calf feedlot intake, or total feed intake were found. Increased MY was associated with a reduction in backfat thickness of the cow during the lactating period (P < .01) with no change in body weight. In the subsequent nonlactating period, increasing MY was associated with increased backfat thickness (P < .10) and body weight (P < .05). No effect of MY on change in backfat or weight of cow from calving to the end of the next nonlactating period was found. No effect of MY on biological efficiency to slaughter was detected. Milk yield was positively associated with gross margin from birth to slaughter (P < .05); results were similar when cow feed prices were reduced by 30%. Increased MY was associated with increased biological efficiency to weaning in HE (P < .01) and SR (P < .10), with no effect found in LR. When feeding cows to requirements, milk yield has a positive effect on the profit potential of beef production from birth to slaughter.  相似文献

A revised version of the Texas A&M University Beef Cattle Production Model was used to simulate the effects of growth, milk production and management system on biological and economic efficiency of beef production in a northern plains, range environment. Animals varying in genetic potential for birth weight (BWA), yearling weight (YW), mature weight (WMA) and milk production (PMA) were simulated under both a weanling system of management (weaned calves custom-fed in the feedlot) and a yearling system (calves wintered on the ranch, then custom-fed after their second summer). The yearling system of management was biologically less efficient, but economically more efficient than the weanling system due primarily to heavier slaughter weights of fed animals. The advantage of the yearling system was most apparent for smaller genotypes. Herd efficiency improved with decreased BWA and increased YW, but changed little when WMA was varied while other growth traits were held constant. Increased PMA was favored for production of live weight at weaning and for production of slaughter product when feedlot costs were high. Increased PMA was not favored when feed costs for the cow herd were high. Economic weights generated from the simulation indicated the importance of selection for rapid early growth followed by selection for lighter birth weight. While larger genotypes were generally favored in this study, optimal cow size depended on economic conditions. Larger types were more biologically efficient and more economically efficient using standard costs, but medium- and small-size cattle were more efficient when feedlot costs were high. Small cattle were least efficient when feed costs for the cow herd were high.  相似文献

Lactation and growth of three contemporary lines of grade Targhee sheep developed from the same genetic base were characterized by three experiments performed over a period of 2 yr. Two lines (HW and DH) had been selected for 120-d weaning weights for 24 yr prior to beginning these experiments. A third line (C) was a randomly selected control. Year I experiment contrasted 10 DH with 7 C ram lambs fed to 58 kg. Year II experiments utilized 9 C, 14 DH and 10 HW ram lambs and 11 ewes suckling twins from each line. All Year II ram lambs were born and weaned as twins, then fed to 50 kg. Mature DH and HW ewes were heavier (P less than .05) than C ewes (65.2 and 68.8 vs 54.9 kg), and the DH and HW lambs grew faster than C lambs both before (P less than .05) and after weaning (P less than .05). While both DH and HW lambs drank more milk (2,419 and 2,368 vs 2,059 g X d-1 X pair-1; P less than .10) only HW ewes showed a trend towards greater potential milk production than controls (HW = 2,774 vs C = 2,155 g X d-1 X ewe-1 P less than .12). The HW lambs tended to be leaner than C lambs (P less than .05), but DH lambs did not differ from either line. Lambs from DH and HW lines required less post-weaning feed (121.9 and 129.3 vs 152.0 kg P less than .05) and exhibited 17 and 16% greater weight per day of age at 50 kg than controls (P less than .05). The DH line displayed lower feed: gain ratios than controls in both post-weaning trials (6.68 vs 7.30 to 58 kg; 5.83 vs 6.24 at 50 kg; P = .06).  相似文献

A modified version of the Texas A&M University Beef Cattle Production Model was used to simulate the effects of changes in potential for age at puberty (AAP), potential for probability of conception (PCA) and winter feed levels on biological and economic efficiency of beed production in a northern plains, range environment. Two management systems were simulated: a weanling system in which all calves except replacement heifers were custom fed in a feedlot immediately post-weaning; and a yearling system in which calves were kept on the ranch through their second summer, then custom-fed. Biological efficiency was defined as the ratio of TDN input to product output, and economic efficiency was defined as the ratio of total dollar cost to 100 kg product output. A simulated increase in AAP from 365 to 425 d resulted in slightly decreased economic efficiency under a yearling system of management. An increase in PCA from .75 to .85 caused decreased biological efficiency under both weanling and yearling management systems, suggesting biological inefficiencies associated with maintaining mature cows. Simulation results indicate that optimal supplementation levels and corresponding levels of observed fertility depend on the value of product derived from cull cows relative to the value of product derived from fed animals and on the costs of developing replacement heifers relative to the costs of maintaining mature cows. Decreased fertility causes change in the sources of products, not product loss per se. For this reason, survivability may be a more important aspect of reproduction than fertility.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to present a short summary of our research on dystocia in Holsteins and a review of management trait information in North America.Primary selection emphasis should be on milk production and milk constituents. Management traits contributing to ease or economy of production should be selected only if economic importance and phenotypic and genetic relationships to productive traits justify such selection.Breeding efficiency is economically important; but, genetic improvement within breeds is difficult. Evidence indicates dystocia can be minimized by selecting sires for production, evaluating them for ease of calving, mating heifers to sires whose offspring are born easily without direct selection against dystocia. Selection against mastitis might be effective, but management practices can reduce the incidence of mastitis. Selection for udder and leg structure may be necessary in order to avoid problems concerning economical food production. Speed of milking has economic importance and it responds to selection. The amount of emphasis for the selection of milking speed and the most efficient way to apply this has not been clarified. Additional study of the genetics of body-weight change is necessary in order to maximize feed conversion. Genetic control of metabolic disorders is not now feasible; management control is necessary. Dairymen desire amenable cows, but heritability estimates for this trait are low. Measures of temperament need improvement. The economic worth of all management traits should be further quantified.  相似文献

Milk EPD, used to predict the milk production potential of a parent's daughters, have been reported by all major cattle breed associations. Our objectives were to determine the relationship of milk EPD of a dam to actual milk production (both fluid and components) and offspring weaning weight. Angus (AN; n = 114) and Simmental (SM; n = 82) cows were machine-milked at approximately 60, 104, and 196 d postpartum after overnight calf removal. In addition, one herd of AN was also milked at approximately 35 and 145 d postpartum. A lactation curve was fitted to these measurements to estimate total milk production during lactation. Simple correlations between 205-d total milk yields (TMY) and adjusted 205-d calf weaning weight (WW) were .30 (P < .001) and .47 (P < .001) for AN and SM, respectively. Furthermore, milk EPD was positively correlated to adjusted WW (r = .38 P < .001; r = .39, P < .001) and TMY (r = .32, P < .001; r = .44, P < .001) for AN and SM cows, respectively. A 1-kg change in TMY changed WW by .014 +/- .006 kg (P < .001) in AN and by .032 +/- .009 kg (P < .001) in SM. A 1-kg change in milk EPD resulted in a 4.85 +/- 1.14 kg change in WW (P < .001) in AN and a 3.74 +/- 1.73 kg (P < .05) change in SM. Corresponding changes in TMY were 42.1 +/- 16.6 kg (P < .01) and 69.3 +/- 16.0 kg (P < .001) for AN and SM, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The objectives of this study were to determine the importance of effects of cytoplasmic origin on milk production and reproduction traits.Cow families at the experimental farm originated from randomly collected calves from 240 herds in two breeding districts. Cytoplasmic origin was defined as the first animal in the traced, maternal lineage. Milk production of 290 cows in first lactation from 1976 to 1982 was used. Reproduction records of the same cows as nulliparous and primiparous could be analysed in cow families.Cytoplasmic origin was a significant (P < 0.01) source of variation in kg fat plus protein, and milk returns (Dfl.) after adjustment for district of origin of the cytoplasmic source, sire's breed, calving year and season, breeding values of sires and material grandsires, and age at calving. Cytoplasmic origin accounted for maximal 10% and 13%, respectively, of the phenotypic variation in the two traits.Cytoplasmic origin was not a significant source of variation in nulliparous and primiparous reproduction traits after adjustment for effects of sire's breed, calving year and season. Although not significant, the cytoplasmic components accounted for 10 to 4% of the phenotypic variation in number of inseminations per first conception and for −0.04% to 13% of the phenotypic variation in age at first calving for the first and second generation, respectively. Some of these cytoplasmic components accounted for more phenotypic variation in reproductive traits of nulliparous heifers than most additive genetic components found in the literature. The effects of cytoplasmic inheritance on production and reproduction traits might have an impact on breeding policies in dairy cattle.  相似文献

Eight paternal half-sib families were used to identify chromosomal regions associated with variation in the lactation curves of dairy goats. DNA samples from 162 animals were amplified by PCR for 37 microsatellite markers, from Capra hircus autosomes CHI3, CHI6, CHI14 and CHI20. Milk samples were collected during 6 years, and there were 897 records for milk yield (MY) and 814 for fat (FP) and protein percentage (PP). The analysis was conducted in two stages. First, a random regression model with several fixed effects was fitted to describe the lactation function, using a scale (alpha) plus four shape parameters: beta and gamma, both associated with a decrease in the slope of the curve, and delta and phi that are related to the increase in slope. Predictions of alpha, beta, gamma, delta and phi were regressed using an interval mapping model, and F-tests were used to test for quantitative trait loci (QTL) effects. Significant (p < 0.05) QTLs were found for: (i) MY: CHI6 at 70-80 cM for all parameters; CHI14 at 14 cM for delta and phi; (ii) FP: CHI14, at 63 cM was associated with beta; CHI20, at 72 cM, showed association with alpha; (iii) PP: chromosomal regions associated with beta were found at 59 cM in CHI3 and at 55 cM in CHI20 with alpha and gamma. Analyses using more families and more animals will be useful to confirm or to reject these findings.  相似文献

Two hundred twenty-five lactation and litter performance records from 82 does representing four genetic groups and two diets were analyzed to quantify breed, heterosis, reciprocal F1 cross and diet effects for milk production and associative traits. Doe genetic groups were New Zealand White (NN) and Californian (CC) straightbred and Californian X New Zealand White (CN) and New Zealand White X Californian (NC) reciprocal crossbreds. Pelleted diets fed to does and litters were either a commercial control or a 74% alfalfa diet. Three sire breeds of litters included NN, CC and Flemish Giant (FG) straightbreds. Doe genetic group and diet were important sources of variation (P less than .05) for all traits examined except for litter milk efficiency (litter gain/milk intake) and doe feed efficiency (milk yield/feed intake). The sire breed of litter effect did not influence (P greater than .05) lactational performance of does nor associative preweaning traits. Straightbred NN does were heavier at kindling, yielded more milk, reared a heavier litter by 21 d and were more efficient in converting feed into milk than were straightbred CC does (P less than .01). Significant heterosis was detected for milk production and for litter size and weight at 21 d. Reciprocal differences between crossbred doe groups were observed (P less than .05) for litter milk efficiency and doe feed intake. The 74% alfalfa diet was superior to the commercial control diet for effects on milk production and litter size and weight at 21 d, although doe feed intake was increased.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Relation of milk production loss to milk somatic cell count.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Milk production loss was studied in relation to increased somatic cell count (SCC). Available data were weekly test-day milk yields and SCC (in 1,000 cells/ml), and mastitis incidences. In total, 18,131 records from 274 cows were used. Production loss was determined for test-day kg milk, kg protein, and kg energy-corrected milk. Least-squares analysis of variance was used to estimate the direct effect of Log10(SCC) on production. The recorded measures of production were first corrected for fixed effects, with adjustment factors estimated from a healthy data-set. The average daily milk yield was 19.7 kg/day in first lactation and 22.0 in later lactations. The geometric mean of SCC was 63.1 in first lactation and 107.2 in later lactations. The incidence of clinical mastitis treated by a veterinarian was 19.8% of the lactations-at-risk. Linear relationships were found between the production parameters and Log10(SCC). Quadratic and cubic effects were evaluated, but were found to contribute little to the overall fit of the models. The individual milk yield loss was 1.29 kg/day for each unit increase in Log10(SCC) for cows in first lactation. Milk yield decreased by 2.04 kg/day per unit Log10(SCC) for older cows. Corresponding values for protein yield were 0.042 and 0.067 kg/day for first and later lactations, respectively.  相似文献

In least-squares analyses of variance, 10 ewe lamb traits were used, singly and in various combinations, to predict lifetime production efficiency. Ewes belonged to eight crossbred groups and were raised on two management systems for either 4 or 5 yr of production. Lifetime production efficiency components were total feed and ewe ownership cost, gross income and net revenue. A ewe lamb's type of birth, actual and adjusted weaning weight (WWt and AWWt), postweaning weight (PWWt) and first year gross income (FGROS) were significantly phenotypically related to one or more components of lifetime production efficiency. While triplets were better than either of the other two birth types, single-born ewes were better than twin-born ewes for lifetime production efficiency. Any of the three ewe lamb weights (AWWt, WWt or PWWt) appeared to be an accurate estimator of lifetime production efficiency. The effect of first year productivity was largely a part-whole relationship with lifetime production because the regression coefficients of subsequent lifetime production efficiency (not including first year production) on first year productivity were near zero. Postweaning average daily gain, ewe age at first estrus and date of first lambing (at approximately 12 mo of age) did not have significant relationships with lifetime production efficiency. When type of birth, date of birth, weaning weight and first year gross income were analyzed simultaneously, weaning weight and FGROS had the greatest effect on lifetime production efficiency. When AWWt and type of birth were considered simultaneously, both had significant relationships with lifetime production efficiency.  相似文献

Bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmus (BCSE) is characterized in cattle by a symmetrical antero-medial rotation and protrusion of the eyeballs. This eye defect is caused by an inherited, centrally insufficient function of the eye muscles recti laterales and retractores. In German Brown cattle a monogenic, autosomal dominant inheritance proved to be most probable in complex segregation analysis. In our study running between October 1993 and May 1995 a total of 200 affected German Brown cows was studied. The investigation of the association between milk production traits and BCSE was based on 10,960 German Brown cows. The analysis revealed no significant differences between affected and non-affected cows, nor between cow families with and without affected members. There was no indication of an association between milk production traits and occurrence of BCSE within cow families. Linkage or pleiotropy of the BCSE locus with quantitative trait loci for milk production traits may be rather unlikely.  相似文献
