The dynamics of vitamin E in the blood serum of sows of the Slovak Large White breed was studied from the 10th day of gravidity to the 20th day of lactation. A slight variation was observed in the average values of serum vitamin E from the 10th to the 50th day of gravidity (from 0.134 to 0.122 and 0.129 mg per 100 ml). A rise to the absolutely highest average values of serum concentration of vitamin E, 0.166 mg per 100 ml, was ascertained in the period from the 70th to the 90th day of gravidity. In the subsequent period, i.e. 110th day of gravidity, the value dropped to 0.120 mg per 100 ml, and on the 5th day of lactation the absolutely lowest value (0.095 mg per 100 ml) for the whole study was obtained. On the 20th day of lactation the serum concentration of vitamin E increased on an average to 0.103 mg per 100 ml. These data indicate the critical periods in the levels of vitamin E; these are from the 90th to the 100th day of gravidity and the first days of lactation when the concentration of vitamin E markedly decreases. If vitamin E is not supplemented to the sows during gravidity in sufficient amounts, preclinical and clinical vitamin E deficiency can be expected to occur.  相似文献

The working hypothesis that a low plane of nutrition during the prepubertal period delays puberty in heifers by retarding the prepubertal increase in secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) was investigated. Secretion of LH and the responsiveness of the pituitary to LH-releasing hormone (LHRH) were compared in heifers fed a growing diet (which allowed spontaneous occurrence of puberty; n = 12; control) or an energy deficient diet (which delayed puberty; n = 11; delayed) during the prepubertal period. The dietary treatments were initiated when the heifers were 299 +/- 14 (mean +/- SD) d of age (d 0 of the experiment) and continued until d 175 of the experiment (474 +/- 14 d of age). Weight gains were .79 +/- .05 (mean +/- SE) and .21 +/- .03 kg X head-1 X d-1 for control and delayed heifers, respectively. Puberty occurred on d 120 +/- 14 of the experiment (428 +/- 13 d of age) in control heifers, whereas none of the delayed heifers attained puberty during the feeding period. Serum concentration of LH and the frequency of LH pulses increased rapidly during the 175-d feeding period in control heifers. In delayed heifers, serum LH concentration increased less rapidly and no increase in pulse frequency was detected during the experimental period. Amplitude of LH pulses tended to be higher in control than delayed heifers. Responsiveness of LH secretion to LHRH was lower in delayed than control heifers. It is speculated that failure of secretion of LH to increase is the causative factor for delayed puberty when dietary energy is limited during the prepubertal period in heifers.  相似文献

To study vitamin A transport in dairy cows and heifers around parturition, an enzyme immunoassay for bovine retinol binding protein (RBP) was developed and serum levels determined. Serum and liver concentrations of retinol were assayed by HPLC. Four weeks before expected calving the cows and heifers were divided into two groups each, and half of the animals received a protein supplementation during the dry period. The mean serum RBP concentration 4 weeks before calving was 42 mg l-1 for the cows and 44 mg l-1 for the heifers. The serum retinol concentrations were 0.53 mg l-1 for the cows and 0.42 mg l-1 for the heifers, and the liver retinol concentrations 0.30 mg l-1 and 0.13 mg g-1, respectively. In the groups without protein supplementation there was a significant decrease in serum RBP at sampling 1 week before parturition compared to initial values. The measurement of serum RBP may prove useful in assessment of amino acid availability in dairy cows.  相似文献

Prepubertal beef heifers at 60 and 200 d of age, born in the fall or spring, were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups: (1) intact = 1; (2) bilateral ovariectomy (OVX); or (3) OVX plus estradiol-17 beta(E2) administered in silastic implants (OVX + E2). Luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured in serum samples collected at 20-min intervals for 4 h from heifers on -1, +7, +21, +35 and +49 d after OVX. Luteinizing hormone concentrations increased in the serum by 7 d after OVX in heifers at both 60 and 200 d of age (P less than .001; time X treatment). Prior to OVX, the LH patterns were characterized by low levels and infrequent episodic pulses. By 49 d after OVX, the mean LH concentrations increased and the pattern changed to one of rhythmic LH pulses with a periodicity of 1 h (P less than .001; time X treatment). Estradiol-treated OVX heifers did not exhibit a postovariectomy rise in serum LH concentrations. Serum E2 concentration 49 d after OVX in OVX heifers was threefold greater than in 1 or OVX heifers, thus demonstrating that E2 exerted negative feedback on pituitary LH secretion in prepubertal heifers. There was no measurable difference in serum E2 concentrations between I and OVX heifers; however, the contrast in the concentration and pattern of serum LH between the two groups was dramatic and suggested gonadal factors in addition to E2 are involved in controlling LH secretion.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There is insufficient evidence in the literature concerning the fluctuations and correlations of serum fat-soluble vitamin concentrations during lactation in dairy cows and the potential effect of age of the animals on these values. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine fluctuations in mean serum concentrations of the fat-soluble vitamins A and E and b-carotene and the correlations among them in clinically healthy dairy cows, from the last month of the dry period until the end of lactation, and to investigate whether age was a factor that affects these serum concentrations. METHODS: Forty-five clinically healthy Holstein cows were assigned to 2 groups based on age. Group A consisted of 23 cows 4 years old (mean +/- SD, 3.24 +/- 0.44 years), and group B consisted of 22 cows >4 years old (6.68 +/- 1.66 years). Blood samples for determination of serum beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E concentrations were collected from each animal just before the start of study (1 month prior to expected parturition), at parturition, and thereafter, at monthly intervals until the end of lactation. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E values. Mean serum concentrations of beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E were significantly higher in younger animals. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that age is a factor affecting serum concentrations of fat-soluble vitamins in dairy cows.  相似文献

The vitamin E requirement of growing pigs was estimated on the basis of prevention of morphological signs of deficiency. Five groups of pigs were fed a barley-based diet low in vitamin E that contained 16 mg of DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate equivalents/kg and .1 ppm of Se for 4 wk (depletion I). This period was followed by 7 wk of supplementation, during which the groups received 0, 15, 45, 135 and 405 mg of supplemental DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet. Finally, all the animals were fed the low vitamin E diet for 7 wk (depletion II). To follow the vitamin E concentration in serum and tissues, blood samples were collected and biopsies were taken from skeletal muscle, adipose tissue and the liver throughout the experiment. The peak vitamin E value was observed in the liver, followed by the adipose tissue and then skeletal muscle. The liver responded rapidly to changes in dietary vitamin E intake, whereas the adipose tissue and the skeletal muscle reacted at a slower rate. In spite of the abundant occurrence of the different vitamin E isomers in the feed, alpha-tocopherol was the main isomer detected both in the serum and in the tissues. The activity of glutathione peroxidase in serum increased with age but was independent of the serum vitamin E concentration. In the unsupplemented group all animals suffered from the vitamin E and Se deficiency syndrome (VESD) in an acute or chronic form. A total of 31 mg of DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet (16 mg of naturally occurring vitamin E and 15 mg as supplementation) equivalent to 2.5 IU vitamin E/g polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was enough to prevent the development of VESD. In view of the large individual variations of vitamin E concentration in target organs, and to obtain a certain safety margin for prevention of VESD in growing pigs, a supplement of 30 mg of DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet is recommended.  相似文献

The dynamics of L-ascorbic acid was studied in 68 cows and 91 calves at an age from one to ten days in the period from November to April. The study was conducted in two maternal stocks in a supply area of a large-capacity calf-house located in the beet-growing region. L-ascorbic acid in the blood serum was determined accoring to King. The lowest average levels of L-ascorbic acid were found in February (cows 0.35 mg%, calves 1.02 mg%), and the highest in April (cows 1.00 mg%, calves 2.52 mg%). The level of L-ascorbic acid descended during ontogenesis from the value found at birth (6.72 mg%); the values of the first postpartal day are significantly higher in comparison with all the remainind observations. The results constituted a basis for a working hypothesis on the importance of colostrum as an exogenous source of L-ascorbic acid for calves.  相似文献

The objective of this trial was to determine whether a single bolus of 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) (25-OH D(3)), vitamin E, or a combination of the 2 would improve the tenderness of steaks from the LM of beef heifers. Forty-eight Angus crossbred heifers were allotted randomly to 8 pens. Six heifers were in each pen, and there were 2 pens per treatment. The 4 treatments included control (no 25-OH D(3) or vitamin E); 25-OH D(3) (500 mg of 25-OH D(3) administered as a one-time oral bolus 7 d before slaughter); vitamin E (1,000 IU of vitamin E administered daily as a top-dress for 104 d before slaughter); or combination (500 mg of 25-OH D(3) administered as a one-time oral bolus 7 d before slaughter and 1,000 IU of vitamin E administered daily as a top-dress for 104 d before slaughter). Blood samples were obtained on the day that heifers were allotted to treatments, on the day 25-OH D(3) was administered, and on the day before slaughter. Plasma calcium concentration was increased when 25-OH D(3) was administered with or without vitamin E (P < 0.007). In LM, calcium concentration tended to increase (P = 0.10) when 25-OH D(3) was administered alone but not when 25-OH D(3) was administered with vitamin E. Concentrations of 25-OH D(3) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) in plasma were increased when 25-OH D(3) was administered with or without vitamin E (P < 0.001). Steaks from heifers treated with 25-OH D(3) or vitamin E, but not both, tended to have lower Warner-Bratzler shear force than steaks in the control group at 14 d postmortem (P = 0.08). Postmortem protein degradation as measured by Western blot of the 30-kDa degradation product of troponin-T was increased with all treatments after 3 d postmortem (P 相似文献

Chlortetracycline is an antibiotic that is used to increase weight gain, efficiency of gain, carcass grade, and conception rates. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of 350 mg/d of chlortetracycline on ADG, G:F, BCS, thyroxine, and systemic glucose concentrations in yearling dairy heifers. Forty 12-mo-old Holstein heifers (initial BW = 363 +/- 21 kg) were housed in a free-stall barn with ad libitum access to feed and water for 104 d. A transition period was begun 14 d before the age of 12 mo to acclimate the heifers to the diet. The chlortetracycline-fed group (n = 20) consumed 328 +/- 8.2 mg of chlortetracycline/heifer daily. Measurements for BW, withers and hip heights, BCS, and health score were recorded weekly. Dry matter intake was measured daily. Blood was sampled every 4 d to determine plasma thyroxine and glucose concentrations and every 2 d to determine progesterone concentrations. Heifers were artificially inseminated on the first observed standing heat after 13 mo of age. There were no effects of chlortetracycline on ADG, G:F, withers and hip heights, BCS, blood glucose concentrations, peak progesterone concentrations, health, or conception rate. There was an interaction between treatment and time for chlortetracycline on serum thyroxine concentration. In the beginning of the experiment, serum thyroxine concentration was lower in heifers supplemented with chlortetracycline. There was no difference between treatments in thyroxine concentration at the end of the experiment. Chlortetracycline supplementation was not beneficial for yearling dairy heifers.  相似文献

Superovulated Hereford-Angus crossbred heifers (average 397 kg BW) were used to test the effect of feeding cottonseed meal (gossypol) and vitamin E on embryo quality and ovarian characteristics. Twenty-four heifers were assigned randomly to four treatments with six heifers per treatment. Treatments were the following dietary supplements: 1) SBM (soybean meal + 30 IU vitamin E/kg of diet DM); 2) SBM+E (soybean meal + 4,000 IU vitamin E x animal(-1) x d(-1)); 3) CSM (cottonseed meal + 30 IU vitamin E/kg of diet DM); and 4) CSM+E (cottonseed meal + 4,000 IU vitamin E x animal(-1) x d(-1)). Supplements based on cottonseed meal provided 43.5 g of total gossypol/d (37% negative isomer (-) and 63% positive isomer (+)). Blood samples were collected at the start of the experiment and every 3 wk thereafter up to 12 wk. Plasma a-tocopherol (alpha-T) concentration was affected by treatments (P < 0.05). Heifers supplemented with cottonseed meal had greater (P < 0.05) alpha-T concentration in plasma than heifers supplemented with soybean meal at each concentration of vitamin E. Supplementation at 4,000 IU vitamin E x animal(-1) d(-1) increased (P < 0.05) the concentration of a-T in plasma. Weight gain, hemoglobin and hematocrit were not affected by treatment. Erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) increased (P < 0.05) in cottonseed meal-fed animals; however, EOF was lowered (P < 0.05) with vitamin E supplementation. Heifers fed CSM and CSM+E supplements had greater (P < 0.01) concentrations of (-)-, (+)-, and total-gossypol in plasma, corpora lutea (CL), liver, and endometrium than heifers fed SBM and SBM+E supplements. Tissue alpha-T concentration increased with increased dietary supplemental vitamin E, particularly in great amounts in the CL. Because there was no adverse effect of gossypol on superovulation response or embryo development despite concentrations of gossypol in endometrium that are toxic to embryos, it is likely that systems exist in the reproductive tract to limit gossypol toxicity.  相似文献

Increased concentrations of dietary fish oil and antioxidants have been shown previously to change circulating concentrations of individual fatty acids (FAs) and vitamin E. The purpose of this study was to further investigate the effects of vitamins E and C, in combination with dietary fish oil, on selected blood and urinary biomarkers. Fifty adult Beagle dogs (mean age 5.3 years, range 1.4-14.2 years) were randomized into five dietary treatment groups for 90 days. All foods were complete and balanced and met the nutrient profiles of AAFCO for adult dogs. For 60 days before study initiation, dogs consumed a pretrial food that contained 74 IU/kg vitaminE and 0mg/kg vitaminC. The five experimental foods were confirmed by analytical methods to contain ≥ 640 IU/kg vitaminE and 130 mg/kg vitaminC (as fed). Experimental foods ranged from low levels of EPA and DHA (pretrial food and lowest experimental food had 0.01% EPA and no detectable DHA) to the highest experimental food with 0.25% EPA and 0.17% DHA. Serum was analyzed for FAs, vitamin E, and cholesterol concentrations; urine was analyzed for 11-dehydro thromboxane B(2) (TXB(2)). Serum was also used for metabolomic analysis. FA intake ranged from 0.02 g/day EPA and 0.02 g/day DHA to 0.58 g/day EPA and 0.39 g/day DHA. Increasing dietary concentrations of EPA and DHA resulted in increased serum concentrations of EPA and DHA in a dose-dependent fashion. Greater dietary vitamin E intake resulted in increased serum vitamin E concentrations (P<0.01). Higher serum cholesterol was also associated with higher serum vitamin E concentrations (P<0.01). In turn, changes in serum cholesterol concentration were associated with diet-induced changes in serum FA concentrations (all P<0.01). At the beginning of the dietary treatment period the most significant predictor of urine 11-dehydro TXB(2) concentration was age, followed by lean-body mass. After dietary treatment with different amounts of fish oil, age (increases 11-dehydro TXB(2)) was followed by EPA concentration as a significant negative predictor of urine 11-dehydro TXB(2) concentration (increasing serum concentrations of EPA decrease 11-dehydro TXB(2)), and then lean-body mass (decreases 11-dehydro TXB(2)). Serum docosahexaenoyl-glycerophosphocholine concentration was increased by feeding fish oil in a dose-response manner. In summary, serum vitamin E concentration is enhanced primarily by feeding vitamin E and secondarily by serum cholesterol concentration. When feeding diets enriched with fish oil, the major negative predictor of urinary 11-dehydro TXB(2) concentration is serum EPA concentration. Plasma lysophospholipids can be dynamically regulated by dietary fish oil supplementation.  相似文献

The concentrations of vitamin E, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and retinol were analysed in blood plasma of six primiparous sows during gestation and lactation and in their suckling piglets, and the concentrations of vitamin E, selenium and retinol were analysed in colostrum and in sows' milk. During late gestation the concentrations of vitamin E and retinol in blood plasma increased slowly while no changes were found for GSH-Px. This was followed by a large decline on the day of farrowing, when the lowest mean values of 1.07 mg, 0.15 mg and 2879 U per litre (l) of blood plasma, respectively, were recorded. During lactation the concentrations of vitamin E, GSH-Px and retinol in blood plasma of the sows increased to levels observed during late gestation. The highest mean concentrations of vitamin E (17.9 mg kg- 1 ), selenium (200 w g l- 1 ) and retinol (2.45 mg kg- 1 ) were found in colostrum, but with a large variation between sows. One week postpartum the concentrations of vitamin E, selenium and retinol in sow milk had decreased, on average by 86, 68 and 71%, respectively, after which only small changes occurred. Mean concentrations of vitamin E (1.77 mg l- 1 ), GSH-Px (682 U l- 1 ) and retinol (0.07 mg l- 1 ) were low in the blood plasma of the piglets at birth, but a large increase was observed on the next sampling occasion at the age of 3 days (vitamin E: 5.31 mg l- 1 ; GSH-Px: 996 U l- 1 ; retinol: 0.19 mg l- 1 ). The mean concentration of vitamin E in blood plasma of the piglets declined thereafter until the age of 6 weeks (1.04 mg l- 1 ), when there was a small increase, while the mean concentrations of GSH-Px and retinol continued to increase during the suckling period. A high correlation was found between the concentration of vitamin E in blood plasma and sidefat thickness of the sows (r = 0.94), and between the concentration of vitamin E in colostrum and vitamin E in blood plasma of the sows on the day of farrowing (r =0.77). High correlations were also found between the concentration of vitamin E in the blood plasma of the piglets at 3 days and 5 weeks of age and the concentration of vitamin E in colostrum (r = 0.78) and (r =0.89), respectively. The results indicate that vitamin E storage in the adipose tissues of the sow has a great influence on the supply of vitamin E via colostrum and milk to the piglet.  相似文献

Abstract

The influence of vitamin E supplementation on blood serum vitamin E concentration as well as the seasonal variation of serum vitamin concentration was investigated. Forty horses were divided into a control and three vitamin E supplementation (experimental) groups. The levels of the vitamin E supplementation in the three experimental groups were 1, 3 or 5 mg/kg body weight (bwt) per day. The vitamin was dosed orally. The supplementation was started either at the beginning or in the middle of the indoor (winter) feeding period. There was seasonal variation in the serum vitamin E content; the serum vitamin concentration increased during the grazing and decreased during the indoor feeding period. The basal feeding and a daily supplement of 1 mg/kg bwt were not adequate to maintain or increase the serum vitamin E concentration during the indoor feeding period in an exercising horse. The minimum daily intake of vitamin E would seem to be greater than 1.5 mg/kg bwt. It is suggested that a daily supplement of 3 to 5 mg/kg bwt may be required by horses in training to increase the serum vitamin E levels. This amounts to 1500–2500 mg/day for a horse weighing 500 kg. Supplementation should be started at the beginning of the indoor feeding period.  相似文献

Secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and effects of estradiol were evaluated during and after the prepubertal decline in negative feedback of estradiol on secretion of LH. Prepubertal heifers (269 ± 4 days of age; n=10) were ovariectomized on February 6, 1981 (Day 0). Five ovariectomized heifers were administered a subcutaneous implant on Day 0 which provided physiological serum concentrations of estradiol (OVX-E2). The remaining 5 heifers were not implanted (OVX). A second estradiol implant was administered to OVX-E2 heifers on Day 164 (n=3) or Day 206 (n=2) of the study. Blood samples were collected sequentially (every 12 min for 8 hr) at approximately two week intervals from Days 0 to 232 of the experiment. The experimental period spanned from approximately 100 days before (269 days of age) to 100 days after (501 days of age) the expected age at puberty. Mean serum concentration of LH and frequency of LH pulses increased rapidly from Days 0 to 36 in OVX heifers and were followed by a further gradual rise in pulse frequency (Day 50 to 232) and a reciprocal decline in mean LH and pulse amplitude. The rapid post-ovariectomy increase in secretion of LH was blocked by estradiol in OVX-E2 heifers. All characteristics (mean, frequency and amplitude) of secretion of LH increased gradually during the experimental period in OVX-E2 heifers (Days 0 to 232). Mean concentration and amplitude of pulses were higher in OVX-E2 than in OVX heifers by Days 148 and 134, respectively. These differences were maintained for the remainder of the experimental period. No acute effects of the second estradiol implant on secretion of LH were observed in OVX-E2 heifers. Results of this study indicate that long-term changes in secretion of LH occur following prepubertal ovariectomy in heifers and suggest that the previously documented prepubertal decline in negative feedback of estradiol on secretion of LH is followed by a period of positive feedback after pubertal age is surpassed.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to provide baseline data for alpha-tocopherol, selenium and polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations in the serum and feed of New Zealand dairy cattle, and to assess the likelihood that abnormal peroxide metabolism has a role in the impaired lactational and reproductive performance noted in selenium-deficient cattle. Twenty-four Friesian heifers were randomly allocated one of four winter diets consisting of hay with or without selenium supplementation, or pasture and silage with or without selenium supplementation. A winter diet consisting exclusively of hay (alpha-tocopherol concentration 19 mg/kg of dry matter) resulted in a pre-calving serum alpha-tocopherol concentration of 1.2 mg/l compared to 4.5 mg/l for pastured heifers (p<0.01). The pre-calving alpha-tocopherol concentration for the heifers fed hay fell into the range considered deficient (<2.0 mg/l), whereas heifers fed pasture and silage remained in the range considered adequate throughout the study period. Serum fatty acid concentration, and the proportion of fatty acids that were polyunsaturated, were lowest in the hay-fed heifers before calving (1.0 mg/ml, 37.1% respectively), and remained unchanged following re-introduction to pasture after calving in late July and August. Serum fatty acid concentration did not increase following the re-introduction of the heifers to pasture because of the unexpectedly low fatty acid concentration (4.8 g/kg of dry matter) of the mature winter pasture. In October, however, the proportion of fatty acids in serum that were polyunsaturated increased (50%) as did serum cy-tocopherol concentrations (greater than 13 mg/l). Mean serum selenium concentrations in the unsupplemented heifers ranged from 139 to 204 nmol/l, being lowest in October (p<0.01). Supplementation with intraruminal selenium pellets (two pellets delivering about 3 mg of selenium/day) increased serum selenium concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity (p<0.01) whereas the type of winter diet had no effect (p>0.05). These results suggest that dairy cattle wintered on hay can become Vitamin E-depleted, whereas the feeding of pasture and silage should provide adequate Vitamin E. The pasture offered following calving during July and August provided a low dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid challenge, suggesting that abnormal peroxide metabolism is unlikely to be an important mechanism in the impaired performance of selenium-deficient adult cattle which calve at this the of year.  相似文献

Young heifers with nutritional muscular degeneration had relatively low serum tocopherol values despite being on pasture which contained high levels of vitamin E. One possible explanation may be that vitamin E was destroyed within the rumen, another that the clinical symptoms arose very soon after turning out the animals.  相似文献

Perinatal mortality and stillbirths were investigated in an extensively managed herd of Friesian cows and heifers calving over a 2‐year period: 504 cows were calved and 215 heifers. Cows were bred to Friesian and Jersey bulls using natural service. The perinatal fetal mortality rate was 7.5% for cows and 30% for heifers. An experienced stockman managed these calvings and veterinary assistance was required only on nine occasions. All stillborn fetuses were examined post‐mortem by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Carmarthen and no infectious agent was identified on any occasion. Thyroid hyperplasia was found in two fetuses. In blood samples taken from 10 late pregnant heifers, mean glutathione peroxidase values were 7.9 ± 1.7 IU/ml Packed Cell Volume (PCV). Tissues from eight fetuses were submitted to the University of Liverpool for histopathological examination; all presented lesions consistent with myocardial degeneration and necrosis of the left ventricle. Following treatment of 205 late pregnant heifers with sodium selenite and vitamin E, the overall perinatal mortality rate in these cattle fell to below 11%.  相似文献

Circadian dynamics of 38 biochemical parameters of the blood, serum and urine of heifers was studied under the natural light conditions of a light (160-180 lux) and dark (10-40 lux) small cow house. In each house, eight parameters were subject to a significant influence during the day, six of them being the same in both houses: calcium, chlorides, urea and thyroxine of blood serum, glucose and haematocrit in the blood of heifers. The comparison of parameters in different groups showed that different light regimes exerted a significant influence on calcium, chlorides, total protein, cholesterol, vitamin A and thyroxine in serum, haematocrit and leucocyte count in blood, and sodium and urea in the urine of heifers. The effect of feeding regime on the dynamics of parameters was tested by the calculation of the percentual fluctuation of their average values in heifer blood and serum before feeding (samples taken at 6.30 hrs) and after feeding (sampled at 10 hrs). In the light house, six parameters were judged to be less stable and one unstable (urea in serum). In the dark house six parameters were less stable and four unstable (calcium, urea, copper and thyroxine in serum).  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that 17 beta-estradiol (E2) would not suppress secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) in heifers fed a diet limited in energy during the period before the onset of nutritionally induced anestrus. Sixteen of 20 heifers that had been exhibiting normal estrous cycles (20 mo of age, 409 +/- 6 kg body weight) were ovariectomized, and half of them were assigned at random to receive an E2 implant. The ovariectomized heifers were assigned at random to receive diets that contained low (L; 5.8 Mcal X animal-1 X d-1, n = 8) or high levels of energy (H; 20.0 Mcal X animal-1 X d-1, n = 8) for 100 d. The other four heifers remained intact and were fed the L-diet. The intact heifers were utilized to determine the status of reproductive function in animals fed the L-diet. Heifers lost body weight rapidly after initiation of feeding the L-diet. Heifers fed the L-diet then stabilized at a lighter weight until the latter part of the experiment. One of the four intact heifers fed the L-diet became anestrus near the end of the study. Mean concentrations of LH in blood serum increased linearly (P less than .05) in ovariectomized heifers fed the L- and H-diet. Mean concentration of LH in heifers fed the H-diet that were implanted with E2 was similar to ovariectomized heifers fed the H-diet that received no E2. Mean LH in serum of ovariectomized heifers implanted with E2 fed the L-diet was suppressed and remained low throughout the study. Frequency of pulses of LH in ovariectomized heifers fed the L-diet was less (P less than .01) than that in ovariectomized heifers fed the H-diet. Estradiol decreased the number of pulses of LH in heifers fed the L-diet. We conclude that dietary energy restriction in beef heifers has a direct action on the hypothalamo-pituitary axis to lower the number of pulses of LH in the absence of ovarian steroids. However, ovarian E2 appears to suppress further secretion of LH in heifers fed limited levels of dietary energy before the onset of nutritional anestrus occurs, therefore, our working hypothesis is rejected.  相似文献

This study was designed to examine the storage capacity for vitamin E in liver, adipose tissue and skeletal muscle of growing pigs during a period of supplementation and of depletion. Therefore, biopsy specimens of these tissues and samples of serum were frequently taken from 7 pigs throughout the experimental period. After a 7-week period on a diet highly supplemented with vitamin E (405 mg/kg), a significant increase (p less than 0.001) in the concentration of this vitamin was observed in all tissues sampled. The highest level (102.9 +/- 26.2 mg/kg) was observed in the liver. After 2 days of depletion the concentration of vitamin E in the liver had fallen by 80%, whereas the concentration in the fat and muscle remained unchanged during 1 week of depletion. The serum vitamin E value rose significantly (p less than 0.001) after 1 week on the supplemented diet and then remained at about 7 mg/l throughout the supplementation period and decreased (p less than 0.001) after 2 days on a nonsupplemented diet. Generally, the serum vitamin E levels among growing pigs are between 2 and 3 mg/l. The results show that the serum and liver values were correlated when the serum level was within this range. Moreover, it is clearly demonstrated that the concentrations of vitamin E in serum and liver reflect the immediate nutritional status of the animal, whereas the vitamin concentrations in adipose and skeletal muscle tissue reflect its long-term nutritional history.  相似文献
