Abstract

As part of a project to stimulate Norwegian seed production of common bent (syn. browntop, US: colonial bentgrass, Agrostis capillaris L. syn. A.tenuis Sibth.) field trials comparing sowing rates of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 or 10 kg ha?1 were conducted at Landvik, south-east Norway, (58°N) from 1989 to 1994. Three trials were laid out of the forage cultivar ‘Leikvin’ and three trials of the lawn cultivar ‘Nor’, each trial being harvested for three consecutive years. While the average per cent ground cover in spring increased from 87% at 2.5 kg ha?1 to 94–96% at 7.5 kg ha?1, seed yields decreased with increasing sowing rate in both cultivars. On average for all harvests, quadrupling the sowing rate from 2.5 to 10 kg ha?1 reduced seed yield by 9% in ‘Leikvin’ and 15% in ‘Nor’, the stronger effect probably being associated with a greater competition between tillers in the lawn cultivar. Seed yield reductions with increasing sowing rate showed no relationship with crop age, but were less accentuated for crops undersown in spring wheat in a dry year than for crops established without cover crop in years with ample rainfall in early summer. Increasing sowing rates reduced plant height and panicle number in ‘Nor’, but had no effect on seed weight or germination in any of the cultivars. It is concluded that seed crops of common bent should be established with a sowing rate of 2–5 kg ha?1, with the lowest rate in lawn cultivars, under ideal seedbed conditions and when seed crops are sown without cover crop.  相似文献

Two field experiments were conducted on small plots in the Philippines to determine the effects of tillage, seeding method and time of sowing on the establishment of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. IPB-M79-17-79) in seedbeds created in drying soil that had been puddled as for an immediately preceding wetland rice crop.

Conditions following rice were simulated by flooding, puddling and then draining the plots. Mungbean was sown at 2–14 days after draining (DAD) as the soil dried. In one experiment, seeds were sown manually into plots that were either non-tilled or for which the surface 10 cm had been ploughed and harrowed. In a second experiment, manual sowing into non-tilled plots was compared with prototype machine seeding. Soil matric potential and temperature were monitored throughout the experiments, and germination and seedling emergence recorded.

Surface cultivation slowed the rate of water loss from depths below 5 cm and resulted in lower thermal diffusivity than in non-tilled soil. Germination results indicated that following drainage of a seedbed in previously puddled soil, manual sowing at a depth of 5 cm could be delayed until 8 DAD (while soil matric potentials remained > − 0.1 MPa) without a significant reduction in seed germination. The seeding machine was quicker and easier to use, but its constraint of shallow sowing (maximum depth 2 cm) meant that sowing could be delayed only to 5 DAD before germination and emergence were inhibited. Predictions of germination from measured values of temperature and water potential were made using equations derived from controlled-environment studies. Differences from germination observed could probably be accounted for by seed/soil/water contact effects, which appeared to be especially important in dry soil (< − 0.7 MPa). Subsequent seedling emergence was, however, often severely restricted in non-tilled soil by soil mechanical constraints in the drying, strengthening seedbed. In the first experiment, these conditions were alleviated by the cultivation treatment; in the second, disturbance of surface soil before drainage resulted in greater emergence and faster seedling growth.  相似文献

Abstract

Rapid and uniform crop establishment is a prerequisite for efficient crop production and minimal environmental impact. Extensive experiments were carried out in shallow plastic boxes placed in the field directly on the ground for studies of the effects of seedbed properties on emergence of small-grain cereal crops in a cool, temperate climate. This paper presents studies of the seedbed as a protective layer against evaporation and the requirements for good emergence under dry weather conditions. Without rainfall after sowing, nearly complete emergence of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was obtained, when rapidly germinating seed was placed on a moderately compacted basal layer containing at least 5% (w/w) plant-available water and covered by a 4 cm deep surface layer consisting of aggregates < 5 mm. This applied even when initial water content in the surface layer was below the wilting point and potential evaporation was high. If the soil at 4 cm depth is drier or if a sufficiently fine seedbed cannot be obtained, then seedbed and sowing depth should be somewhat greater, and if the soil is wetter, then the depth may be smaller. There were only small differences in emergence between surface layers consisting of aggregates < 2 mm, 2–4 mm or 2–5 mm, or dominated by these aggregate fractions, but when the surface layer consisted of coarser aggregates, emergence was usually much lower. Determinations of water losses from the soil during the experimental period showed that the differences in emergence were caused by differences in efficiency of the seedbed to control evaporation. The results indicate that, in an initially wet soil, it is always possible to find a time and method for seedbed preparation and sowing that lead to good emergence of small-grain cereal crops, even with a lengthy period without rainfall after sowing.  相似文献

Abstract

Rapid, uniform crop establishment is a precondition for efficient crop production. In order to develop guidelines for seedbed preparation and sowing, extensive experiments were carried out in plastic boxes placed in the field directly on the ground for studies of the effects of seedbed properties on crop emergence. This paper deals with the effects on emergence of cereals caused by surface-layer hardening, induced by simulated rainfall (irrigation) after sowing followed by dry weather. The experimental crop was spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Soils for the experiments (Eutric Cambisols, silt loam or clay loam in most cases) were collected from the surface layer of farm fields in various parts of Sweden. On soils with high silt content, irrigation after sowing often caused slumping and subsequent hardening of the whole seedbed. On clay soils, usually only a shallow surface crust formed. The earliest irrigation had the most negative effects on crop emergence. On a silt loam soil with unstable structure, irrigation with only 5 mm reduced emergence to under 20%. Later or heavier irrigation was often less negative, as it allowed the plants to emerge before the surface layer dried and hardened. Deep sowing greatly increased the negative effects on emergence, whereas soil aggregate size usually had negligible effects. It was concluded that when sowing in practice, seedbed preparation and sowing depth should be chosen to promote the fastest possible emergence. Sowing immediately before rain should be avoided, as should shallow sowing that requires rain for the seed to germinate.  相似文献

Abstract

Extensive experiments were carried out in shallow plastic boxes placed directly on the ground in the field to study the effects of seedbed properties on the emergence of various crops in a cool temperate climate. In a group of experiments with barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), we studied the effects on crop emergence of firming (slight compaction) of the seedbed, simulating the recompacting effects of rolling after sowing or press wheels on the seed coulters. Most of the experiments were carried out without irrigation after sowing. The firming usually had a slightly positive effect on emergence when the water content in the surface layer at sowing was below the wilting point. When the water content in the surface layer was higher, firming often reduced emergence drastically, particularly with deep sowing and in coarse-textured soils. The main reason for negative effects was harmful hardening of the surface layer when the more firm seedbed gradually dried out. When irrigation kept the seedbed continuously moist, the negative effect of firming was almost eliminated. Very high initial water content in the basal layer tended to delay surface layer drying and hardening, and to reduce the negative effect of firming. Firming only slightly influenced the evaporative water losses from the soil. In contrast to the results presented here, previous field trials with cereals have usually resulted in more positive effects of rolling after sowing. This indicates that other effects than firming, such as modification of sowing depth and reshaping of the soil surface, are other important effects of rolling.  相似文献

Coating of rice seeds with fungicide Thiram improved the seed germination capability over a long period of time (11 weeks) under low temperature conditions (4 and 8°C), which simulated the sowing of rice seeds in the winter season (the farmer's slack season). To analyze the effect of Thiram on the community structure of microorganisms on the rice seed surface, culture-dependent and culture-independent (PCR-RFLP) methods were applied. PCR-RFLP patterns of 16S rDNA showed that the bacterial communities on the rice seed surface were different between coated and uncoated treatments under 8°C conditions, but that they were very similar under 4°C conditions. PCR-RFLP patterns of 18S rDNA revealed the remarkable effect of Thiram on the fungal community structure under both 4 and 8°C conditions. Although the fungal communities were quite different between coated and uncoated seeds at the beginning of incubation, the fungal communities on the coated seed surface became similar to those of uncoated seeds along with the duration of the incubation period. As the dominance percentage of Fusarium spp. among the isolates increased with the duration of the incubation period for both coated and uncoated seeds, Fusarium was considered to be a responsible for the poor germination of rice seeds that were sown in the winter season.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study examined if dwarf French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown at northern latitudes develop seeds with superior yielding potential compared with plants grown at more southern latitudes. Two lines (BND3085 and BND3106) were grown at four sites across latitudes ranging from 52°N to 3°S. BND3085 and BND3106 seeds from Saskatoon grown plants (52°N) had the least damaged seed coats but the highest degree of electrolyte leakage from the seed and the lowest maximum germination rates. The Saskatoon (BND3085 and BND3106) and Nunhem (BND3106) seed lots had the lowest maximum germination rates when germinated at 28°C, 12°C, or when exposed to saline (100?mM NaCl) conditions. Saskatoon BND3085 seed produced plants with the lowest aboveground vegetative and total seed dry matter as well as the lowest pod number per plant. In contrast, plants grown from Saskatoon BND3106 seed produced 1.5-fold more total pods, 1.3-fold more total pods and 1.4-fold higher seed dry matter per plant as compared to plants grown from the Nunhem (51°N) or Arusha seed sources. This resulted in a 2.4–4.5% higher harvest index. These results suggest cultivar-specific dwarf French bean seed propagation at more northern sites may increase the productivity of the resulting crop.  相似文献

The effect of seed vigor on seed emergence depends on the type of environmental stress present at the time of seed germination and establishment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the interaction of environmental stresses and aging on soybean (Glycine max L.) seed emergence. A factorial arrangement of treatments imposed on a randomized complete block design with four replications was conducted. Treatments of seed aging for 12, 24, 36, and 48 h at 41°C, salinity (6 and 12 ds/m2), water deficiency (–4 and–9 MPa), and sowing at depths of 3 and 7 cm were selected. Growth measurements were completed 21 and 55 days after planting. Analysis of variance was performed using the regression method for quantitative treatments such as seed aging, and if interactions were significant, interaction slicing was utilized and means compared with least significant difference tests (0.05). For quantitative treatments, regression analysis was conducted and path analysis was performed on growth traits. Results showed that aging had a significant effect on maximum emergence and rate of emergence. The ranking of the stress factors from most to least injurious for maximum emergence were severe salinity, severe drought, medium salinity, sowing depth of 7 cm, and medium drought. Harmful stress conditions on the plant leaf area and seedling dry weight were severe salinity, medium salinity, severe drought, medium drought, and sowing depth of 7 cm (only for seedling dry weight). Relative growth rate, net absorption rate, and leaf area ratio were not affected by aging but were affected by environmental conditions. These findings indicate that the impacts of environmental conditions are at least partially controlled by seed vigor.  相似文献

A research program concerning the seedbed preparation problems in Swedish agriculture included a series of pot experiments in shallow plastic boxes. Seedbeds of well-defined characteristics were arranged, and seedling emergence was determined by daily plant countings. In the experiments reported, the main subject of study was the efficiency of the seedbed in controlling evaporation. Clay or clay loam soils were used, and the crops were mainly small grain cereals.Seven experiments with unstratified seedbeds showed that for small grains in a dry weather situation, the seed should be placed directly onto the moist bottom of a harrowed layer, which should be 4–5 cm deep and mainly consist of aggregates smaller than 4 mm. If the bottom layer contains less than 5% plant available water, or if a fine enough seedbed structure cannot be produced, the depth of both harrowing and sowing should be increased. In four experiments with stratified seedbeds, no reasons were found for sorting the coarse aggregates to the soil surface, provided the initial moisture content increased with depth.Effects of seed quality were studied in two experiments. Seed lots with equal germinability under optimum moisture conditions gave large differences in emergence in a moisture stress situation. Within a rather wide seed size range, the size as such had only minor influence on the emergence rate.  相似文献

This study was carried out in the Seed Research Laboratory of the Department of Crop Science, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, in summer 2011. Rice (cv. Khazar) seeds were soaked in 0, 20, 50, and 100 mg l?1 salicylic acid (SA) aerated solutions for 24 h and then dried back to original moisture content and were sown in three temperatures (28°C as normal and 12°C and 8°C as chilling temperature conditions). In the first step, both treated and untreated seeds were sown at the optimum temperature (28°C). Then, to apply chilling temperature, 15 days after sowing, one set of the seeds was exposed to 12°C and 8°C under controlled conditions. Results showed that all seedlings raised from seeds primed with SA solutions produced a higher root and shoot length, final emergence percentage, and relative water content and also lower mean emergence time and time to 50% emergence (E50) in comparison with untreated seeds. Antioxidant enzyme system efficiently responded to the stress conditions and the priming treatment. Also seedling raised from primed seeds showed higher antioxidant activity at each temperature compared with control.  相似文献

We examined the effect of seed nitrogen content on the rates of germination, emergence, and establishment of rice plants. Several seed lots with various nitrogen contents were obtained from the parent plants grown under 3 planting densities and 4 rates of nitrogen application. There was a clear negative correlation between the seed nitrogen content and germination time (R =0.88), whereas the correlation between the seed dry weight and germination time was very low (R=0.23). The seed lot with a high nitrogen content absorbed water faster than the seed lot with a low nitrogen content, especially on the first day after soaking, and also showed a faster emergence, exsertion of the fourth leave, and a more uniform germination. Moreover, the increase of seed nitrogen content as well as the prolongation of soaking time resulted in a uniform emergence. Therefore, seed vigor is likely to be enhanced by the increase of seed nitrogen content, which may be achieved by an adequate application of a large amount of nitrogen to parent plants. Consequently, it may be possible to improve and stabilize the establishment of directly sown rice plants by the sowing of vigorous seeds with a high nitrogen content.  相似文献

Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) is an important cover crop and green manure in dryland cropping system of Mediterranean regions. A delay in the onset of rainfall during autumn can inhibit hairy vetch seed germination, which exposes its early growth stages to low-temperature stress. The present study was carried out in a completely randomized design with four replications to evaluate the effects of seed priming on germination of hairy vetch under chilling stress. The treatments were seed-priming type (unprimed, hydro-priming, halo-priming, and osmopriming) and temperature (3, 6, 9, 12, and 15?°C). The results indicated that a decrease in temperature produced a linear decline in the germination rate of seeds treated with halo-priming and osmopriming (p?<?.01). The seedling length, seedling dry weight, and vigor index decreased in plants experiencing chilling stress (quadratic; p?<?.01) for hydro-priming, halo-priming, and osmopriming. The maximum germination rate was achieved using hydro-priming. Osmopriming prevented a decrease in the rate of germination at 3?°C. A decrease in temperature increased the proline and the soluble protein contents in all the seed priming treatments, but, decreased catalase and guaiacol peroxidase activity (p?<?.01). In brief, halo-priming, and hydro-priming enhanced establishment and growth of hairy vetch under chilling stress primarily through improvements in the physiological parameters and germination rate. This finding can increase the potential for cultivation of the hairy vetch in late planting date.  相似文献

Poor crop establishment, due to poor land preparation methods and inadequate soil moisture, continues to be a major constraint to crop production for smallholder farmers in the semi-arid tropics. On-farm seed priming (soaking seed in water) has been offered as a solution to this problem, but the ways in which this technology interacts with soil conditions are not well understood. The interactions between seed priming and soil physical conditions on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) emergence and seedling growth were determined in laboratory pot experiments. The treatments included seed treatment (primed and non-primed), initial soil matric potential (−10, −50, −100, −200 and −1500 kPa) and aggregate size (<1, 1–2, 2–4.75 and 4.75–16 mm). Non-sieved soil was used as a control. The soil used (a Chromic Cambisol) was collected from Save Valley Experiment Station in the southeastern lowveld of Zimbabwe. The pots of soil were allowed to dry out after planting, to simulate a deteriorating seedbed. Emergence was subsequently monitored, and plant growth measured 8 days after planting. Final percent emergence and seedling growth decreased with initial matric potential but increased with priming in both crops. Large aggregate sizes generally had an adverse effect on emergence and growth. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that on-farm seed priming can partly compensate for the negative effects of low soil matric potential and large aggregate sizes on crop establishment.  相似文献

Light and temperature are among the environmental factors affecting germination of seeds and seedling growth. Therefore, this experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of light (light, dark, and combined light and dark) and temperature (15, 20, 25, and 30?°C) treatments on seed germination indices and physiological traits of stevia. With increasing temperature to 25?°C, percentage and rate of germination, seedling length, and vigor index increased. Also, dark and integrated treatments light and dark conditions caused increased all traits, except for the mean germination time. The highest proline and protein contents were achieved under light conditions at 15 and 30?°C, respectively. With increasing temperature, the activity of antioxidant enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase increased. The highest activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase were observed under light condition. In contrary, the highest peroxidase activity was observed under dark condition. Overall, the results showed that dark and combined dark and light conditions at 25?°C improved the physiological characteristics of the plant that can increase germination indices.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to increase loquat seed germination with treatments consisting of two soaking temperatures (24 ± 2°C and 38 ± 2°C), chemical agents [control, 0.5% potassium nitrate (KNO3) and 250 mgL?1 gibberellic acid (GA3) each for 20 h], and different moist chilling (MC) periods (1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks under 4–5°C). Compared with 24 ± 2°C, soaking at 38 ± 2°C reduced germination%, mean daily germination (MDG), and mean germination time (MGT), plumule and radicle lengths. Germination percentage, days to 50% emergence, fresh weight and lateral root numbers significantly reduced as MC period increased. KNO3 and GA3 had no significant effect on germination percentage, MDG, MGT and lateral root numbers. KNO3 reduced days to 50% emergence and radicle length, but increased fresh weight compared with control and GA3. Finally, our results suggest the soaking at 24 ± 2°C followed by 0.5% KNO3 each for 20 h plus 1 week of MC or soaking at 24 ± 2°C followed by 250 mgL?1 GA3 each for 20 h plus 2 week of MC.  相似文献

In a lateritic sandy clay loam soil contained in a soil bin, three aggregate size ranges (0.25–0.50, 1.0–2.0 and 2.0–4.0 mm) were established by different tillage intensity to vary the seed—soil contact and to determine the best seedbed for peanut seedling emergence. The general objective was to study the water uptake and diffusivity of the seeds as well as the aeration, water transmission and thermal properties of the seedbed. In the seedbed with the finest aggregate size, the water uptake was maximum and the time needed for germination was least.  相似文献

Ecological restoration has become an important technique for mitigating the human impacts on natural vegetation. Planting seedlings is the most common approach to regain lost forest cover. However, these activities require a large economic investment. Direct seeding is considered a cheaper and easier alternative technique, in which tree seeds are introduced directly on the site rather than transplanting seedlings from nurseries. To evaluate the effectiveness of direct seeding, we conducted a comprehensive search of the literature using ‘restoration’, ‘direct seeding’ and ‘sowing’ as keywords, and we performed a meta‐analysis using 30 papers and 89 species. We used two different measures of restoration success: seed germination probability and success probability (the chance that a seed germinates and survives until the end of the experiment). In general, restoration attempts using direct‐seeding techniques were relatively unsuccessful. On average, seed germination and success probability were 0·239 and 0·114, respectively, and were not affected by climate, species successional group or the application of pre‐germinative treatments. Germination and success probability increased with seed size, and the use of physical protections resulted in a nearly twofold increase in germination probability, but this effect faded by the end of the experiments. Because of the low rate of seedling success, we suggest the use of direct seeding as a complementary technique to reduce restoration costs, particularly for species with large seeds and known high germination rates, but our results do not support direct seeding as a substitute for seedling planting. Maintaining sufficient viability is critical to the sustainability of ex situ conserved seed collections. For this reason, accessions are regenerated when viability falls below a predefined threshold. Viability is monitored by determining the germination ability of accessions at predefined time intervals. Optimizing the frequency of these germination tests, in order to avoid waste of resources, is hampered by the scarce availability of data about seed longevity, particularly for material maintained under genebank conditions. Here we report on the analysis of nearly 40,000 germination test results collected for a wide range of crop species over a 25-years period by the centre for genetic resources, the Netherlands (CGN), where seeds of genebank accessions are dried to 3–7 % moisture content and stored for the long term under near-vacuum in aluminium foil bags at ?20 °C. The results indicate that seed viability is well maintained for the large majority of seed lots during the first 25 years after regeneration as only 3.3 % of the monitoring tests revealed below-threshold germination values. It is argued that the majority of these sub-standard seed lots are due to other causes than seed ageing, including dormancy problems and estimation error in germination testing. For material, maintained under the seed management procedures and storage conditions practiced by CGN, it is therefore recommended to delay the first germination monitoring tests to 25 years after regeneration.  相似文献
