Species of the genus Marteilia (Phylum Paramyxea) are protozoan parasites of marine mollusks. Marteilia spp. have been detected in mollusks from different parts of the world, but the presence of these parasites in China has not been previously reported. Therefore, a survey was conducted to look for the presence of Marteilia spp. in blue mussels Mytilus edulis and Asian green mussels Perna viridis collected along China's coasts. Histological and PCR analyses revealed that 5 of 180 M. edulis (prevalence = 2.8%) were positive for infection with a Marteilia-like organism, whereas the parasite was not detected in any of the 80 P. viridis individuals tested. Total genomic DNA was extracted from the infected tissue sections for PCR amplification. The PCR amplification with Marteilia primers SS1 and SAS1 yielded the expected 641-bp product. Sequencing results showed that the 18S ribosomal RNA gene fragment from the protozoans found in M. edulis from China was 88% similar to that of Marteilia refringens, a species that was reported from M. edulis and European flat oysters Ostrea edulis collected in France. This is the first report of a Marteilia-like organism infecting M. edulis in China. 相似文献

Newborn and young pups up to the age of 15 days were exposed to E. cuniculi, either by keeping the pups in cages together with orally inoculated foster-mothers and their offspring, or by oral inoculation with E. cuniculi spores. A majority of pups appeared sero-positive to E. cuniculi with the india-ink immuno-reaction from 35 to 87 days post exposure; spores of E. cuniculi were detected in organs of some of the animals. The non-inoculated pups kept together with the orally inoculated pups became seropositive from 49 to 129 days after the oral inoculations. However, the exposure of newborn and young pups failed to induce clinical encephalitozoo-nosis, and when killed at the time of pelting the body weights and fur quality appeared to be within the normal range in all exposed foxes. No macroscopic lesions were detected in the various organs. Histologically focal interstitial nephritis occurred in the great majority of the seropositive animals. Meningoencephalitis was seen in some of the foxes, whereas slightly thickened walls of some arteries, mainly in the myocardium, were found in a few animals. The lesions of the brain and kidneys seem to be very similar to those seen in chronic cases of rabbit encephalitozoonosis. Polyarteritis nodosa and severe encephalitis and interstitial nephritis with extensive proliferations of plasma cells, which are almost constant findings in cases of clinically diseased foxes, were not detected in any of the subclinically infected animals. Various factors that might be of significance in the pathogenesis of the disease are discussed, and it is concluded that intrauterine infection of the pups via the transplacental route appears to be an essential supposition for the establishment of clinical fox encephalitozoonosis. 相似文献

Spores of Encephalitozoon cuniculi were recovered from foetal and placental tissues from blue fox females orally inoculated with the parasite. The results provided evidence for transplacental transmission of the causative agent of fox encephalitozoonosis. 相似文献

Examinations of fecal specimens from swine of all ages maintained in a totally enclosed confinement facility in south Georgia were conducted in a 5-year survey (1977-1981) to determine the prevalence, intensity, and transmission patterns of intestinal nematode and protozoan parasites. Weaned pigs in the nursery had no detectable parasitic infections except sporadic Isospora suis in newly weaned pigs. Growing-finishing hogs had a low prevalence of Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp. and Balantidium suis. Mean A. suum prevalence and mean eggs per gram feces (EPG) increased until about 200 days of age and then declined. Oesophagostomum spp. and B. suis prevalence and intensity tended to increase throughout life. Gilts (mean age 273 days) in the gestation unit had a higher (P less than 0.01) prevalence of A. suum and lower (P less than 0.01) prevalences of Oesophagostomum spp. and B. suis than sows (mean age 706 days). Similarly, A. suum EPG was higher (P less than 0.01) and Oesophagostomum spp. EPG and B. suis cysts per gram feces (CPG) were lower (P less than 0.01) in gilts than in sows. No evidence for a peri-parturient increase in parasite eggs or cysts was found. Instead, there was a higher prevalence of B. suis (P less than 0.01) in gestating than in lactating animals and more lactating sows than gestating sows were negative for parasites (P less than 0.01). Apparent differences due to location (gestation unit or farrowing unit) were largely attributable to age differences. Trichuris suis infections were rare and not shown to be established in the herd. Strongyloides ransomi in suckling piglets was controlled by anthelmintic therapy. I. suis occurred in piglets throughout the study but was never found in sows in the farrowing unit, either before or after birth of a subsequently infected litter of piglets. No parasites requiring intermediate hosts occurred. 相似文献

Samples from 5 Danish freshwater trout farms rearing rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus my kiss) were examined for parasite infections from October 1993 until November 1994 and recorded parasites are listed. In addition, results from an examination of a mariculture net cage system are presented as well. A total of 10 metazoan and 10 protozoan parasites were recorded. The metazoans included Gyrodactylus derjavini, Gyrodactylus salaris, Eubothrium crassum, Triaenophorus nodulosus, Proteocephalus sp., Diplostomum spathaceum, Tylodelphus clavata and Argulus foliaceus from the freshwater farms. The protozoans Hexamita salmonis, Ichthyobodo necator, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Apiosoma sp., Epistylis sp., Trichodina nigra, T. mutabilis, T. fultoni, Trichodinella epizootica, and an Ichthyophonus like intestinal parasite were also detected in the freshwater trout farms. Based on lectin binding studies, few fish were found positive for the myxosporean parasite PKX although no clinical cases were reported. In the mariculture system, Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus were found. 相似文献

Problems dealing with common parasites--oxyurids, which affect laboratory mice colonies are discussed and reviewed. Their life histories, pathogenicity and immunity are examined. The attention is paid to the influence of age, sex, strain and status of the host in the infection. It is agreed that helminth infections are usually more severe in male than in female vertebrate hosts. 相似文献

Parasite control in calves and growing heifers results in animals that grow faster and remain healthier. Control programs revolve around reducing the parasites (infective stages) in the environment. In confinement, sanitation removes or reduces the number of infective stages (oocysts, cysts, and infective larvae) and the infection rate. On pasture one must resort to pasture management and parasite removal. The mites and lice are generally controlled by reducing or removing the populations on the animals, preventing the spread. Environmental control and manure management impact the fly populations. 相似文献
