Fifty-nine crossbred heifers (427 kg) bred to one Hereford sire were randomly assigned at 75 d prepartum to two diets. Heifers were individually fed, and diets were isocaloric but contained either a low (LP = 81% NRC, .56 kg/d) or high (HP = 141% NRC, .98 kg/d) level of crude protein. Jugular vein cannulae were inserted into 16 LP and 16 HP heifers at 10 prepartum. Daily preprandial blood samples that were collected until parturition were analyzed for serum estradiol-17 beta (E2), progesterone (P4), glucose (G) and urea nitrogen (UN). Heifers fed LP gained slower than HP-fed heifers before calving (.73 vs 1.02 kg/d; P less than .01); immediate post-calving weights and condition scores were 418 vs 444 kg (P less than .01) and 5.4 vs 6.1 (P less than .01; LP vs HP, respectively). Calf birth weights (35.3 vs 36.1 kg), average calving difficulty score (1.6 vs 1.6) and percent assisted births (35.5 vs 35.7%) did not differ (P greater than .10; LP vs HP, respectively). Prepartum concentrations of UN (6.2 vs 13.5 mg/dl) and G (52.9 vs 58.2 mg/dl) were lower (P less than .05) and P4 (5.94 vs 4.26 ng/ml) was higher (P approximately equal to .07) in LP heifers. Prepartum concentration profiles were related to calving difficulty score (CD, 1 = no assistance to 3 = hard pull) for E2 (CD1 vs CD2 + CD3, P less than .01; CD2 vs CD3, P approximately equal to .01), P4 (CD1 vs CD2 + CD3, P less than .05), G (CD1 vs CD2 + CD3, P less than .05) and UN (CD2 vs CD3, P less than .05). After calving, all dams were maintained together on pasture and supplemented with alfalfa hay and grain mix until adequate range forage was available to maintain weight gains. Dams that were fed LP prepartum gained faster than HP dams during this period (.49 vs .15 kg/d; P less than .01). Prebreeding weights (443 vs 453 kg; LP vs HP) and condition scores (5.1 vs 5.1) did not differ, nor was the postpartum interval affected (44 vs 40 d; LP vs HP). There was no effect of dietary protein on dystocia or postpartum interval, although there were diet-induced differences in body weight and condition of the dams at calving. Results indicate that differences in prepartum profiles of serum steroid hormones and metabolites may be related to dystocia, in addition to relative fetal oversize.  相似文献

At 50 d prior to predicted calving, 37 multiparous Angus cows were grouped by sire of mating, age and weight of cow and placed on either a high energy (HE, n = 19) diet or a moderate energy (ME, n = 18) diet. Objectives were to determine the effect of prepartum nutrition on: prepartum serum concentrations of estrone (E1), estrone sulfate (E1SO4) and progesterone (P4); pre- and postpartum cow body weight changes; calf birth weight and cow and calf postpartum performance. The ME cows were group-fed Coastal bermudagrass hay ad libitum and dormant pasture; HE cows were group-fed 2.7 kg ground corn X head-1 X d-1 in addition to the ME treatment. Both groups were combined and fed identically after calving. Cows fed HE were heavier (P less than .01) than cows fed ME at d 10 prepartum and their calves were heavier (P less than .05) at birth and weaning than calves from cows fed ME. Serum E1 concentrations were not significantly different between groups, but serum E1SO4 was higher (P less than .01) at d 10 prepartum in ME cows compared with HE cows. Serum P4 concentrations of ME cows were higher (P less than .05) than those of HE cows. Cow body weights were greater (P less than .01) for the HE group than for the ME group during the first 6 mo postpartum. Cow rebreeding performance was identical for both groups.  相似文献

The effects of somatotropin (STH) and energy intake on serum concentrations of glucose (GLU), insulin (INS), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), urea nitrogen (UN) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) were determined in 40 Angus heifers. At 7 mo (208 +/- 8 d) of age heifers were assigned to four treatment groups: 1) vehicle (V) + high energy (HE; 2.68 Mcal ME/kg DM), 2) recombinant DNA-derived STH (20.6 mg/d; s.c.) + HE, 3) V + low energy (LE; 2.22 Mcal ME/kg DM) or 4) STH + LE. Animals remained on treatments until an average of 15.5 mo of age. Blood samples were taken every 30 min for 4 h at 9, 11, 13 and 15 mo of age to determine circulating concentrations of metabolites and hormones. Serum IGF-I was increased (P less than .01) by STH injections, but this effect appeared to diminish with age (STH x age; P less than .01). Energy intake did not influence IGF-I levels. Somatotropin increased (P less than .01) serum GLU in heifers fed the HE diet but only tended (P = .08) to increase GLU in those fed the LE diet (STH x energy; P = .05). Although STH increased (P less than .01) serum INS in both energy groups, the response in heifers fed the HE diet was greater (P less than .02) than that in heifers fed the LE diet (STH x energy; P less than .05). The effects of dietary energy intake and somatotropin (STH) on growth and puberty were studied in 40 Angus heifers. At an average age of 7 mo (208 +/- 8 d), heifers were assigned to four treatment groups: 1) vehicle (V) + high energy (HE; 2.68 Mcal ME/kg DM), 2) recombinant DNA-derived STH (20.6 mg/d; s.c.) + HE, 3) V + low energy (LE; 2.22 Mcal ME/kg DM) or 4) STH + LE. Animals remained on treatments until 15.5 mo of age. Body weights (BW), hip heights (HH) and areas of pelvic openings (PA) were measured every 28 d and backfat thicknesses (BF) were measured every 56 d. Plasma progesterone was measured in blood samples taken three times per week beginning at 9 mo of age to determine age at first ovulation. Heifers fed HE were heavier (P less than .01), gained faster (P less than .01) and had greater BF (P less than .01) than those fed LE. Animals treated with STH gained faster (P less than .01) and were heavier (P less than .05) between 12 and 15 mo of age than V-treated heifers. Heifers treated with STH also had less BF (P less than .05) and a tendency for a greater (P = .08) increase in HH than in V-treated heifers. Somatotropin interacted with energy (P less than .05) and age (P less than .01) to influence PA. Mature Charolais x Angus cows (n = 128) were adjusted to a body condition score (BCS) of 3 (1 = very thin, 3 = moderate, 5 = very fat) between 130 and 190 d of gestation. When cows averaged 190 d of gestation, they were assigned randomly to a maintenance energy diet (ME) or to a diet very low in energy (LE). Cows were allotted within these prepartum (PRP) diets to a high-energy (HE) or LE diet at parturition. At 30 d postpartum (PP), cows were allotted to four treatments: a) slaughter at 0 (n = 32) or b) 48 h after calf removal (n = 32), c) cows whose calves were early weaned at 30 d PP (n = 32) or d) normally weaned at 205 d PP (n = 32). Low energy PRP intake reduced (P less than .01) BCS, cow weight, total empty body lipid (TEBL), body energy (BE) and daily predicted maintenance energy (PME)/W.75 by parturition. Pre- and postpartum energy intake combined to affect (P less than .10) these same factors in a similar manner at 30 d PP. From 30 to 60 d PP, early weaning reduced (P less than .05) PME/W.75. Cow BCS at 190 d of gestation had little effect (P greater than .10) on PME/W.75 or PME/Mcal of BE. Body condition score at parturition, however, affected (P less than .05) delta BCS, delta BE and PME/Mcal of BE by 30 and 60 d PP, with thinner cows losing less condition and requiring more PME/Mcal of BE. Cow BCS had a similar effect from 30 to 60 d PP. Total daily PME was greater for the fat cows during both the PRP and PP periods. Body composition, PRP and PP energy intake and early weaning affect energy requirements and energetic efficiency of beef cows.  相似文献

Fifty fall-weaned heifers with initial weights of 209 kg (yr 1) and 222 kg (yr 2) were used to determine effects of lasalocid on weight gains, forage intake and ruminal fermentation of stocker cattle grazing winter wheat pasture. The heifers grazed a single wheat pasture for about 100 d each year, and were individually fed 1.06 kg of supplement (6 d/wk) pro-rated to supply 0, 100 or 200 mg lasalocid.head-1.d-1. Also, eight mature Hereford steers with large rumen cannula were used to evaluate further effects of lasalocid (0 or 300 mg) on ruminal fermentation during two grazing periods (immature and mature wheat forage) of yr 2 and an additional third year. Daily gains of heifers fed 200 mg lasalocid/d were .11 kg greater (P less than .05) than those of heifers fed 0 or 100 mg lasalocid/d. One hundred milligrams lasalocid did not increase weight gains. Digestibilities of forage dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) were similar (P greater than .05) among treatments, and lasalocid did not affect (P greater than .10) forage intake. Ruminal ammonia concentrations (10.57, 15.22 and 17.81 mg/dl +/- 1.71) were increased (P less than .05) by both levels of lasalocid in yr 1, but differences among treatment means of 8.32, 11.95 and 11.66 (SE +/- 1.44) were not significant in yr 2. Lasalocid did not consistently affect total volatile fatty acids concentrations. Beef cows (n = 64) were slaughtered to evaluate effects of dietary energy and calf removal (CR) on hypothalamic and adenohypophysial endocrine characteristics. From d 190 of gestation until parturition, cows received maintenance (ME; n = 32) or low (LE; n = 32) energy diets (ME = 100%, LE = 70% NRC recommendations). After parturition, half (n = 16) of each prepartum diet group received low (LE; n = 32) or high (HE = 130% NRC; n = 32) energy diets. At 30 d postpartum, cows were slaughtered 0 or 48 hr after CR. Hypothalami [preoptic area (POA), hypothalamus (HYP), stalk-median eminence (SME)] and pituitaries were collected. Basal and K(+)-induced release of GnRH from SME, and pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) did not differ among groups (P greater than .05). Hypophyseal LH was correlated (P less than .01) with body condition score (BCS) at parturition and slaughter (r = .36 and .47, respectively). Prepartum LE diet increased (P less than .05) met-enkephalin in POA compared to prepartum ME (.59 +/- .05 vs. .44 +/- .04 pmol/mg) regardless of postpartum diet or suckling status. High fat range supplement (HFRS) and HFRS with lipid from soybean soapstock (HFRS-SPH; Consolidated Nutrition, Omaha, NE) were compared with a corn-soybean meal supplement (control). In Exp. 1, primiparous cows were individually fed the control supplement (n = 12), HFRS (n = 12), or HFRS-SPH (n = 10) for 62 ± 2 d prepartum. Heifer body condition score pre- and postpartum did not differ (P=0.78) among groups. Milk production was not influenced (P=0.15) by source of supplement. Somatic cell counts, however, tended to be less (P=0.07) in HFRS-supplemented heifers than in heifers fed the control supplement. At birth, calf body temperature (P=0.8), vigor (P=0.7), and BW (P=0.6), as well as BW gain through 90 d postpartum (P=0.6), did not differ among prepartum supplementation treatments. Plasma concentrations of linoleic acid were greater (P=0.02) in fat-supplemented heifers at 30 d prepartum and at calving compared with heifers on the control treatment; however, concentrations of plasma linoleic acid returned to levels comparable with those in control heifers by 30 d postpartum. Neither number of cows cycling by 90 d postpartum (P=0.15) nor length of the postpartum interval (P=0.25) differed among treatment groups. In Exp. 2, multiparous cows were pen-fed the control supplement (n = 49), HFRS (n = 47), or HFRS-SPH (n = 49) for 59 ± 2 d prepartum. Prior to parturition, cows fed the control supplement had better body condition scores (5.8 ± 0.1; P=0.004) than cows fed either commercial supplement (5.4 ± 0.1). Calf performance (P=0.7) and conception rates (P= 0.5) did not differ among treatments. Productivity of cows and calves was not improved with provision of supplemental fat prepartum.  相似文献

Our hypothesis was that alterations in pattern of gonadotropin secretion induced by level of dietary energy intake are dependent on direction of BW change. Beef heifers were assigned to one of two treatments 21 d after ovariectomy: 1) increasing followed by decreasing BW (I-D; n = 9) or 2) decreasing followed by increasing BW (D-I; n = 9). Heifers assigned to the I-D treatment received 15.4 Mcal ME/d (HE) from wk 0 to 8 followed by 4.3 Mcal ME/d (LE) from wk 9 to 16. Heifers assigned to the D-I treatment received the LE diet for the initial 8 wk followed by the HE diet for the subsequent 8 wk. At 2-wk intervals blood samples were collected at 10-min intervals for 11 h to determine the pattern of secretion and(or) concentration of gonadotropins in circulation (LH and FSH) and pituitary responsiveness to administration of 750 ng and 50 micrograms of LHRH. Frequency of LH pulses increased (P less than .05) in a quadratic fashion with increasing ADG in heifers in both treatment groups. Amplitude of LH pulses decreased (P less than .05) in a linear fashion with increasing ADG in heifers in both treatment groups and magnitude of this decline was greater (P less than .05) in heifers receiving the D-I treatment. Amplitude of response to 750 ng of LHRH decreased (P less than .05) in a linear fashion with increasing ADG in heifers receiving the D-I treatment but was unrelated to changes in ADG (P greater than .05) in heifers receiving the I-D treatment. When heifers in both treatment groups attained similar BW (P greater than .05; wk 14), amplitude of LH pulses, responsiveness to 750 ng of LHRH and mean concentration of FSH in serum were higher (P less than .05) in heifers receiving the I-D than in heifers receiving the D-I treatment. Thus, we accept the hypothesis that alterations in pattern of gonadotropin secretion in heifers fed diets with a low energy content are dependent on direction of BW change.  相似文献

Thirty-six primiparous heifers were used to determine the effect of dietary energy on postpartum interval, milk production, serum concentrations of insulin, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), growth hormone, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of neuropeptide-Y (NPY). Low-quality hay was fed during the last trimester of pregnancy to achieve suboptimal calving weight (370 +/- 5 kg) and condition score (4.0 +/- .1). After calving, cows were allotted to one of four dietary treatments that differed in metabolizable energy. Experimental diets were fed at 2.5% of shrunk body weight and formulated to provide 1.8 (low), 2.1 (maintenance), 2.4 (maintenance high), or 2.7 (high) Mcal of ME/kg DM. Daily milk production was estimated at approximately 30, 60, and 90 d postpartum. Condition score change and weight change were defined as change from calving to d 90 postpartum. As energy intake increased, condition score change (P < .001), IGF-I (P < .001) and insulin (P < .01) increased and postpartum interval decreased (P = .04). No relationship existed between postpartum interval and CSF concentration of NPY (P > .1). Condition score change was positively associated with IGF-I and insulin (r = .71, P < .001; r = .38, P = .02, respectively) and negatively associated with GH (r = -.67, P < .001). Weight change and serum concentrations of GH did not differ (P > .10) among treatments. Increasing dietary energy intake was associated with a curvilinear increase in milk yield (P = .04) and percentage milk fat (P = .03) and a linear increase (P = .04) in energy available for milk production. Greater milk yield at d 30 was associated with a longer postpartum interval (r = .34, P < .05). In conclusion, a greater proportion of net energy is partitioned to maternal tissue realimentation when cows receive high compared to low-, maintenance-, or moderate-energy diets.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of pre- and postpartum undegraded intake protein (UIP) supplementation on body condition score (BCS), BW, calf weight, milk production, serum IGF-I concentrations, and postpartum interval in primiparous beef heifers (n = 44). Heifers were maintained on endophyte-free stockpiled tall fescue (11.7% CP, 38% ADF) and individually fed supplement daily beginning 60 d prepartum. Pre- and postpartum supplements provided 19.3% CP, 83.4% TDN (UIP); 14.1% CP, 84.1% TDN (Control); 21.5% CP, 81.5% TDN (UIP); and 14.6% CP, 81.4% TDN (Control); respectively. Blood meal (146 g/d) was the source of UIP. Six heifers were removed from the study due to calf loss unrelated to treatment; therefore, postpartum measurements are based on 19 animals per treatment. Statistical analyses using ANOVA and a split-plot design revealed no effects of treatment (P > 0.2) on BCS, BW, calf weight, milk production, or postpartum interval. There tended to be a treatment x time interaction on BCS (P < 0.09) with UIP heifers having higher BCS than Control at wk 5, 7, and 9 postpartum. There was a treatment x time interaction on serum IGF-I (P < 0.06) during the first 35 d postpartum. In UIP heifers, serum IGF-I was greater at calving compared with Control heifers (117.5 vs 92.4 ng/mL, respectively); however, these differences were not related to changes in BCS or BW. Although serum IGF-I concentrations were increased at calving in heifers receiving UIP, there were no treatment effects on postpartum interval (P > 0.7). During the first 30 d postpartum, IGF-I differed (P < 0.01) among heifers with postpartum intervals defined as short, < 50 d (128.9 ng/mL); medium, 51 to 65 d (115.2 ng/mL); and long, 66 to 130 d (52.9 ng/mL). When analyzed as a regression, a 1 ng/mL increase in IGF-I (UIP and Control heifers) at calving (P < 0.05) and throughout the postpartum period (P < 0.01) corresponded to a decrease in postpartum interval of 0.13 d. Based on the results of this study, the inclusion of UIP in diets for primiparous heifers and its effects on postpartum interval warrant further evaluation.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of fat supplementation during the transition period on pre and postpartum body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFA), glucose and leptin concentrations in Holstein cows. Holstein cows (n = 15) received a low fat diet (LF; 1.61 Mcal net energy for lactation (NEL)/kg of dry matter [DM]), moderate fat diet (MF; 1.68 Mcal NEL/kg DM) or a high fat diet (HF; 1.74 Mcal NEL/kg DM) for 4 weeks prior to calving. All cows were fed similar lactation diets ad libitum (1.74 Mcal NEL/kg DM) for 30 days after calving. Increasing diet energy density during transition period had no effect on prepartum DMI, BCS, BW, glucose and NEFA concentrations (P > 0.05); but leptin concentrations and energy balance (EB) were affected by treatments (P < 0.05). Animals fed HF had less plasma leptin prepartum. After parturition, BW, milk production, milk fat, protein, urea nitrogen and plasma glucose concentrations were affected by prepartum diets (P < 0.05). Fat supplementation prepartum did not affect postpartum NEFA. In conclusion, prepartum fat supplementation decreased leptin concentration prepartum.  相似文献

The effects of energy and protein intakes by 32 primiparous sows during a 28-d lactation on sow and litter performance and sow body composition and bone properties were examined. Dietary treatments were energy intakes of 8 (LE) and 16 (HE) Mcal of ME/d and protein intakes of 380 (LP) and 760 (HP) g of CP/d in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Sows fed diets that were inadequate in either energy or protein lost more weight than did sows fed the HE-HP diet, but backfat losses were greater when energy intake was deficient than when protein was deficient. Carcass measurements were influenced in a similar manner, with energy intake affecting (P less than .001) backfat thickness and protein intake affecting (P less than .05) longissimus muscle area. Heart, kidneys and liver of sows fed LP diets weighed less (P less than .01) and contained less water and protein (P less than .05) than those of sows fed HP. Sows fed LE had heart, liver and viscera that weighed less (P less than .05) than those of sows fed HE. There was less fat (P less than .05) in the heart, lung, liver and viscera of sows fed LE than in those of sows fed HE. Carcass components of the supraspinatus muscle and standardized sections through the longissimus muscle and right shoulder weighed less (P less than .05) from sows fed LP rather than HP, and these components contained less water and protein. Sows fed the LE diets had less fat in the loin soft tissue section, right shoulder section and supraspinatus muscle than sows fed HE. Bone composition and strength were not influenced by dietary treatment. The composition of weight lost during lactation was diet-dependent. Sows fed diets that were deficient in protein but adequate in energy lost large amounts of protein from muscles and internal organs. Energy deficiency resulted primarily in fat loss.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in consecutive years to determine the effects of prepartum nutrient level and postpartum ruminally undegraded protein intake on nutrient status, milk production, subsequent calf production, and reproductive performance of 126 crossbred, primiparous beef heifers. Prepartum treatments were low nutrient intake (LN) (approximately 2.5 kg of TDN, .5 kg of CP animal-1.d-1 and maintenance nutrient intake (MN) (5 kg of TDN, 1 kg of CP animal-1.d-1), which were fed for 75 d before parturition. Two postpartum protein supplements were formulated to provide 250 g/d of ruminally degradable protein (RD) and one to supply ruminally undegraded protein (UD) at 250 g/d of additional UD CP compared to the RD supplement. Cholesterol was lower (P less than .01) in heifers given UD than in heifers given RD. Blood urea nitrogen was higher (P less than .01) for UD-fed heifers than for RD-fed heifers and was higher in LN heifers (P less than .06) than in MN heifers. Milk production did not differ (P greater than .11) as a result of LN, MN, UD, or RD. Postpartum cow weight gain was greatest (P less than .01) for UD and LN heifers. The percentage of heifers bred during the first estrous cycle of the breeding season was greater (P less than .02) for UD than for RD. Overall, prepartum nutrition did not interact with postpartum protein supplement, nor did it have any effect on postpartum interval, whereas UD increased cow weight gain postpartum and reduced postpartum interval.  相似文献

Twenty-eight Hereford x Angus cows (4 yr of age) were used to determine the effects of pre- and postpartum dietary energy on performance and reproductive function in suckled beef cows. The experiment was designed as a 2 x 2 factorial with cows receiving either 70 (L) or 150% (H) of NRC recommended level of dietary energy before and(or) after parturition, resulting in four treatment combinations (L-L, L-H, H-L, H-H). Prepartum diets were fed for approximately 110 d, and postpartum diets were fed until either 10 d after the second postpartum ovulation or 150 d postpartum for those cows that failed to ovulate. Cows receiving low compared with high levels of energy before calving lost more (P less than .01) weight, body condition, subcutaneous fat, and longissimus muscle area before parturition and had calves with lighter (P less than .01) birth weights. Cows receiving low compared with high levels of energy postpartum lost more (P less than .01) weight, body condition, and longissimus muscle area after parturition. Low levels of energy before and after parturition decreased (P less than .01) milk production and calf weight at 70 d of age. Rates of cervical and uterine involution were unaffected by dietary energy treatments. Cows receiving high levels of energy prepartum had increased (P less than .01) mean concentrations and pulse frequency of LH in serum after parturition, and cows receiving high levels of energy postpartum had increased (P less than .05) pulse frequency of LH. Low levels of energy postpartum decreased (P less than .01) appearance rate of small (5.0 to 7.9 mm) and large (greater than or equal to 10 mm) follicles, and low levels of energy prepartum decreased (P less than .02) appearance rate of large follicles based on transrectal ultrasonography. Cows receiving high levels of energy prepartum had shorter (P less than .02) intervals from parturition to ovulation, and a higher (P less than .01) percentage of the cows that received high levels of energy postpartum ovulated by 150 d postpartum. In summary, prepartum level of dietary energy influenced birth weight and weight gain of calves, milk production, concentrations and pulse frequency of LH in serum, appearance rate of large follicles, and the interval to first ovulation. Postpartum level of dietary energy influenced milk production, weight gain of calves, pulse frequency of LH, appearance rate of small and large follicles, and the percentage of cows that ovulated after parturition.  相似文献

Holstein heifers (n = 21) were balanced across sires and assigned to three service-sire-breed groups in which heifers were inseminated artificially to either purebred Angus (n = 7), Holstein (n = 7) or Brahman (n = 7) bulls. Semen from four bulls was used for each service sire-breed group. Blood samples were collected from a jugular vein thrice weekly from d 160 to 265 of pregnancy, daily thereafter until 15 d postpartum, and then thrice weekly until d 60 postpartum. Concentrations of progesterone, estrone, estradiol, and estrone sulfate from 23 d prepartum to parturition, and of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) from 2 d prepartum to d 15 postpartum were measured by radioimmunoassay. Heifers within the Brahman-service-sire group had longer gestations (P less than .05) than those of Holstein- or Angus-service-sire groups (285.0 vs 278.7), 279.0 d). Calf birth weight was lower (P less than .05) in Angus- than Holstein- and Brahman-service-sire groups (30.6 vs 36.1, 43.4 kg). Daily trends of prepartum maternal progesterone concentrations were approximately 1 ng/ml lower (P less than .01) in Angus- than Holstein- or Brahman-service-sire groups until luteolysis occurred. Heifers bearing crossbred Angus conceptuses had lower daily trends of prepartum estrogens concentrations (P less than .01), whereas heifers of the Holstein- and, even more dramatically, of the Brahman-service-sire groups had a higher magnitude and greater rise of plasma estrogens concentrations between d -10 and -1 prepartum (less than .01). Postpartum mean concentrations (P less than .05) and response curves of PGFM were lower (P less than .01) in the Angus- than in the Holstein- or Brahman-service-sire groups. Calf birth weights were correlated with least-squares means for maternal concentrations of prepartum estrone (r = .57), estradiol (r = .59) and estrone sulfate (r = .64) and postpartum maternal concentrations of PGFM (r = .56). Functional responses of the conceptus (e.g., estrogens) and maternal units (e.g., progesterone and PGFM) were influenced by conceptus genotype during the periparturient period.  相似文献

Ovarian and gonadotropin responses to insulin and energy restriction were investigated in a 2 X 2 factorial experiment using 2-yr-old Brangus heifers. Thirty heifers were paired by weight and body condition, then assigned to treatment groups receiving 75 (LE) or 180% (HE) of NRC recommendations for dietary energy for maintenance. Diets were adjusted weekly to maintain daily .25 to .5 kg weight loss or 0 to .25 kg weight gain, respectively. On d 10 of the first estrous cycle subsequent to the initial 45 d of feeding, heifers within each dietary group were allocated to receive twice daily infusions of either 40 U insulin (I) or saline (C). Infusions began at 5 and 10 h postprandial and were given in six boluses, 20 min apart. Infusions continued daily until d 20 or estrus, whichever occurred first. On d 11, blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 12 h to determine luteinizing hormone (LH) and insulin concentrations. On d 16 to 20, twice daily im injections of 1 mg follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were administered. Heifers were ovariectomized on d 11 after estrus. Number of corpora lutea (CL) in LE-I heifers was greater (P less than .05) in LE-C, HE-C or HE-I. Total CL weight (g) per heifer was greater (P less than .05) in HE-C and LE-I heifers than in LE-C. Twenty-four half-sib Brahman bulls (171 to 276 d of age; 140.9 to 243.2 kg) were paired by age and weight and randomly allotted to one of two treatment groups (12 bulls/treatment) with two replicates (six bulls/replicate). Control treatment (C) was a 4:1 corn (IFN 4-02-931):cotton-seed meal (IFN 3-01-621) diet fed at 1% of the average body weight plus Coastal bermudagrass hay (IFN 1-00-716) ad libitum. Lasalocid treatment (L) was the control diet with the addition of 200 mg lasalocid X head-1 X d-1. Lasalocid resulted in lower acetate and butyrate with higher propionate and no change in total ruminal volatile fatty acids. Lasalocid-fed bulls tended to gain more weight (L = 153.6 +/- 8.5 kg, C = 138.4 +/- 7.9 kg; P less than .08), tended to have a greater average daily gain (ADG; L = .78 +/- .05 kg/d, C = .71 +/- .04 kg/d; P less than .09) and had greater feed conversion (11.5% less feed/kg gain) than did the control bulls. Lasalocid did not affect bull height (HT), weight:height ratio, length (LE) or heart girth (HG) at any time tested during puberal development. Lasalocid bulls exhibited a greater increase in HG through 175 d on treatment (L = 27.6 +/- 1.0 cm, C = 24.3 +/- 1.8 cm; P less than .05) and through first detected sperm (FS) in an ejaculate (L = 30.1 +/- 2.2 cm, C = 26.1 +/- 1.4 cm; P less than .05), but the increase in HG from the start of the trial through puberty was not different between treatments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A total of 159 primiparous sows were fed 0 (C) or 675 mg/d of thyroprotein (TP) from d -2 until d 14 postweaning. Sows received 8 (LE) or 14 (HE) Mcal of ME/d during a 28-d lactation period. Plasma levels of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) and 3,5,3',5'-tetraidothyronine (T4) were determined for d -4, -2, 0, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 postweaning. Sows consuming LE lost more weight and backfat during lactation (P less than .01) than HE sows. Litters of sows consuming LE gained less weight than litters of sows consuming HE (P less than .01). Thyroprotein increased plasma levels of both T3 and T4 (P less than .01), whereas energy intake had no effect (P greater than .10) on either of the two hormones. The response to thyroid hormone was not consistent across days postweaning (TP x day, P less than .01). Feeding TP increased T4 (P less than .01) on all days, and T3 was increased (P less than .05) on d 0, 2 and 3 postweaning. Thyroid hormones rose markedly following weaning regardless of TP level. Percentage of sows in estrus by d 7 postweaning for LE-C, LE-TP, HE-C and HE-TP were 80, 78, 92 and 90, respectively. Energy restriction during lactation resulted in fewer sows returning to estrus by d 7 (P less than .03) than those fed HE. However, feeding TP postweaning had no effect on return to estrus, suggesting that the effect of dietary energy restriction during lactation on the interval from weaning to first estrus is not mediated through postweaning thyroid hormone concentrations.  相似文献

Conception rate in heifers after synchronization of estrus with melengestrol acetate (MGA) and fenprostalene (a prostaglandin F2 alpha analogue; PGF) was determined in pubertal Bos taurus and Bos indicus crossbred yearling heifers. Angus x Hereford (AH, n = 137) and Brahman x Hereford (BH, n = 97) heifers were sorted by body weight after weaning into light (LW) and heavy (HW) weight blocks. Heifers were assigned by age to diets to reach a target weight of 55% (LE) or 65% (HE) of their projected mature weight by the start of breeding. Heifers that exhibited estrus and had serum progesterone greater than or equal to 1 ng/ml (0 or 10 d before estrous synchronization treatment) were assigned randomly within breed and nutritional groups to either an estrous synchronization (S) or control (C) group. Heifers in the S group were fed .5 mg of MGA for 7 d and injected s.c. with 2 mg PGF on d 7 of MGA. All heifers were inseminated 12 h after first detected estrus. A greater proportion of AH (P less than .01) than of BH heifers were in estrus within 6 d after PGF, and more S heifers than C heifers (P less than .01) were in estrus. Conception rate at first service was proportionately higher (P less than .001) in AH than in BH heifers and lower (P less than .02) in S than in C heifers. There was a breed x energy level interaction (P less than .01) for conception rate at first service. Stage of the estrous cycle at the time treatment with MGA was initiated influenced (P less than .05) conception rate at first service in the S, AH heifers, with lower conception rates among heifers beginning treatment late in their estrous cycles (greater than or equal to d 12). Pregnancy rates after 21 d were higher (P less than .01) in AH than in BH heifers and higher (P less than .01) in HW than in LW heifers. More HE than LE heifers (P less than .02), and more AH than BH heifers were pregnant after 45 d. Pregnancy rates at the end of 21 d were higher among HE, BH heifers than among LE contemporaries. A higher (P less than .02) percentage of HE, HW, BH heifers were pregnant at the end of 45 d compared with other BH groups. Results indicated that a 7-d MGA-PGF treatment reduced conception rates at first service in pubertal yearling heifers. Pregnancy rate was affected by prebreeding nutrition in BH yearling heifers at the end of 45 d.  相似文献
