  • ? Eight-year old trees from two Eucalyptus globulus Labill. clones planted across three different sites in Tasmania, Australia, were sampled for wood and kraft pulp/handsheet properties.
  • ? Site had a significant effect on all measured properties. Compared with the poor site (Parkham) the wood from the good site (West Ridgley) had on average 11 % lower wood density. The poor site had also greater microfibril angles, shorter fibres at lower pulp yields.
  • ? The handsheets produced with pulp from the poor site resulted in comparatively higher bulkiness, lower burst, lower tear and tensile indices, lower zero span tensile strength, but higher opacity, higher light scattering and higher surface roughness. Significant height effects were found with all wood properties, and also with tear index, zero span tensile strength and opacity.
  • ? Discriminant analysis showed that for 76 out of 100 handsheets the raw material source, i.e. growth site, could be predicted correctly using a set of handsheet properties with tear index and bulk index being most prominent.
  • ? This is unique evidence that site conditions are strongly reflected in handsheet properties produced from Eucalyptus pulp.

  • ? Old oaks (Quercus robur L.) play an important role in the southern Scandinavian landscape by providing habitat for a wide range of species, a large proportion of them being currently on the National Redlists.
  • ? To provide support for the management of these trees, we review data on oak mortality and formulate a mortality-driven stochastic model analysing interactions between mortality rate, oak recruitment rate into 100–150 age class, and amount of oaks older than 200 years.
  • ? Empirical annual mortality rates varied between 0 and 13% with average 1.68%. Trees older 200 years had an average mortality rate of 1.1%. Oaks in the high density forests showed higher mortality (3.2%) as compared to the trees growing in the low density forests (1.2%). A 400-year long modelling exercises indicated that under current mortality rates (regular mortality being centred around 1% annually; and irregular mortality 7% with average return time of 13 years) the long-term maintenance of 20 trees older than 200 years per ha would require an input rate of 1 to 5 trees × year?1 × ha?1 into the 100–150 years old class.
  • ? The modelling highlighted the importance of initial oak abundance affecting amount of old trees at the end of shorter (100 years) simulation period.

  • ? This study analyses the sex ratios, and the effect of gender, neighboring competition and habitat factors on the stem growth of dioecious F. mandshurica trees in the Changbai Mountains of North-Eastern China.
  • ? The general sex ratio of the flowering trees did not significantly deviate from 1:1. The sex ratio varied among age classes. A female-biased sex ratio was found in the age classes of 65–75 years and 85–95 years, but departure from 1:1 was not significant in other age classes.
  • ? An analysis of variance revealed that the growth rate was extremely sensitive to gender and tree size, as shown by a highly significant gender-related and size-dependent effect. Male trees had a faster stem growth rate than female trees, and the assumption is that trade-offs between reproductive and vegetative processes can induce the difference in stem growth rate between genders.
  • ? Stem growth rates are positively affected by soil moisture and tree size for both genders at all considered neighborhood distances. The growth rates of female trees were negatively affected by neighboring competition from other female trees at all neighborhood distances between 1 and 10 m, but were not significantly affected by male trees. The growth rates of male trees were negatively affected by neighboring competition from male trees for neighborhood distances between 3 and 10 m, but were not significantly affected by female trees.
  • ? These results suggest that intrasexual competition (male-male competition and female-female competition) may cause difference in stem growth for both genders. Intersexual differences in sensitivity to neighboring plants are considered to be an important factor driving gender-specific growth patterns.

  • ? We studied mortality rates of birch, small-leaved linden, pedunculate oak, Norway maple, black alder, common ash and Norway spruce, assessed through two inventories of 12 664 trees in the unmanaged mixed deciduous forests of Oranienbaum Park, northwestern Russia, in 1981 and 2003.
  • ? Our objectives were to evaluate if (a) long-term mortality rates vary among species, and if (b) crown condition, age and tree size affect the probability of mortality.
  • ? Over this period, tree mortality rates in the park varied annually from 1 to 3% for healthy and moderately healthy trees, and from 3.9 to 9.3% for declining trees. The lowest mortality rates were observed for small-leaved linden and oak (0.8 and 1.0%, respectively), and the highest rate for birch (2.7%). We found (1) a significant and consistent association between tree condition and the probability of mortality, and (2) significantly higher mortality rates in smaller trees of ash, maple and oak.
  • ? The effect of species-specific biology on mortality rates in the Oranienbaum Park was largely overridden by the “health status” and environmental conditions of the trees (e.g. degree of crown shading). The observed rates were similar to the estimates from natural temperate deciduous forests in both Europe and North America, indicating similar intensity of mortality in these ecosystems under natural conditions.

  • ? Juniper woodlands have a great conservational and productive importance in Spain. However, basic traits of their structural variation and growth dynamics are unknown.
  • ? To characterize the structural variation and assess both height and radial growth patterns, we sampled and measured stem cross-sections every 0.5 m in height from 107 Spanish juniper (Juniperus thurifera L.) trees, which were selected based on a 350 m regular grid over a whole woodland of 3 300 ha in area. We used dendroecological techniques and spatial analysis to study tree structure and growth.
  • ? Structural traits such as bole diameter and height were mainly determined by tree life-related parameters such as tree age and growth rate variation, while abiotic factors such as altitude played a minor role in determining structural variation. Over the last 300 years, juniper establishment has been continuous in time but discontinuous in space. Large-scale spatial heterogeneity of tree establishment, and the presence of an early growth suppression and abrupt growth changes in junipers > 100 years old are consequences of an intense management that almost ceased in the late 19th century.
  • ? Abrupt growth releases and suppressions were synchronic among different age classes, and coincided with documentary records on livestock decrease and key historical changes in land use. Growth patterns suggest that juniper is a brow sing-tolerant species that is able to survive large periods of intense browsing pressure.

  • ? Wood colour of Tectona grandis produced from fast-growth plantations is highly variable and the causes of this variation are relatively unknown.
  • ? With the purpose of understanding the colour variation, different fast-growth plantations were sampled with different growth rates, tree ages, and sites.
  • ? Wood colour was measured with a CIELab system, where three variables are estimated: coordinate L* for lightness, coordinate a* defines redness and coordinate b* defines yellowness.
  • ? Results showed only a negative correlation between L* and a*. L* and a* were negatively and positively respectively correlated with pith distance in heartwood, but not for b*. No correlations were found between L* and b* in sapwood and plantation characteristics, while a* was positively correlated with age and height of tree and growth rate. In heartwood, tree age and diameter at breast height were correlated with all colour parameters, but tree height and plantation density were correlated with a* and b*. Cluster site had correlation with L*. Multiple correlation analysis showed that the heartwood is increasing darker (L*) and redder (a*) when the trees are older and bigger. Correlation coefficient shown that sapwood and heartwood with lighter colour (L*) is less resistance to fungal attack, but redness colour (a*) increasing decay resistance.

  • ? Alterations in plant chemistry underpin a suite of physiological adaptations to arid conditions. Qualitative and quantitative differences in leaf chemistry are found in the genus Eucalyptus correlating with physiological adaptation to aridity.
  • ? Here we investigate seasonal water relations of three field grown eucalypt species grown at a common site known to differ in their ability to accumulate the cyclic sugar alcohol, quercitol.
  • ? We show that quercitol contributes significantly to osmotic relations in field grown trees of Eucalyptus melliodora but is present only in trace amounts in E. rubida and E. obliqua.
  • ? Measured concentrations of quercitol account for the difference in osmotic potentials between species and can be interpreted as a mechanism for adaptation to low water availability.

  • ? Empirical observations suggest that in pure even-aged forests, the mean diameter of forest trees (D, diameter at breast height, 1.3 m above ground) tends to remain a constant proportion of stand height (H, average height of the largest trees in a stand) divided by the logarithm of stand density (N, number of trees per hectare): D = β(H ? 1.3)/ ln(N).
  • ? Thinning causes a relatively small and temporary change in the slope β, the magnitude and duration of which depends on the nature of the thinning.
  • ? This relationship may provide a robust predictor of growth in situations where scarce data and resources preclude more sophisticated modelling approaches.

  • ? A discriminant study based on samples taken from high and low yielding oleoresin trees of two Greek populations, Chalkidiki and Euboia, was carried out. Oleoresin of Pinus halepensis Mill. was characterised by GC/MS analysis.
  • ? The objectives of this study were: (i) to identify in detail the composition of the oleoresin of P. halepensis and in particular of high yielding trees (plus trees) (ii) to investigate a potential relationship between the oleoresin compounds and the oleoresin yield and (iii) to investigate any correlations among the compounds.
  • ? About forty monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and diterpenes were identified as main compounds representing 97.40% of the analyzed oleoresin. α-Pinene, methyl abietate, abietic acid, palustric acid, isopimaric acid and neoabietic acid were the major compounds. Efficient discrimination was achieved between the two populations and between the two groups of trees (high and low yielding). In both cases, the differentiation was due to the quantitative variability of certain compounds. High positive correlations were found among certain compounds.
  • ? The results suggest that the oleoresin profile is a useful tool for the discrimination of trees according to their provenance or their oleoresin yield.

  • ? Direct assessment of modulus of elasticity (MOE) on standing trees is attractive for breeders to evaluate genotypes prior to selection: this can be done using the Rigidimeter, a bending-based measurement device.
  • ? In this study, we tested its reliability to properly rank genotypes by relating trunk MOE with MOEs estimated with a vibrating analysis system (Bing) on different types of conditioned wood specimens from the same trees (boards and standardised 2×2×30 cm-clear-wood specimens). One hundred and ten trees from different genotypes of hybrid larch (Larix × eurolepis) were tested.
  • ? Mean trunk MOE was 7 300 MPa with a similar value obtained for sawn boards. Clear-wood specimens MOE increased from pith to bark from less than 6 000 MPa to nearly 9 000 MPa. Moderate correlations (r = 0.48–0.61) were found at the individual tree level between trunk MOE and MOE of wood samples.
  • ? Single specimen MOE was shown to be strongly related to a linear combination of trunk MOE and sample position.
  • ? At the genotype mean level, trunk MOE was highly correlated with wood samples MOE (r = 0.80–0.91). Ranking of genotypes based on trunk MOE was mostly consistent with that based on standardised specimens.
  • ? It was concluded that besides other operational advantages which are discussed, the Rigidimeter is a valuable tool for breeders to routinely evaluate and rank genotypes for stiffness prior to further selection.

  • ? The pith represents the central part of the cross-section of a tree trunk and it is composed of primary parenchyma tissue. And its eccentricity is associated with the presence of reaction wood, which affects trunk straightness, and diminishes the quality of the logs and products.
  • ? Gmelina arborea trees (8 to 14 years old) from fast growth plantations in Costa Rica were sampled with the purpose of determining diameter, eccentricity and pith percentage as well as pith distance from the real centre of the cross section. These pith parameters were also evaluated in relation to management intensity (intensive, moderate and unmanaged), climate (dry and wet tropical) and tree height.
  • ? Pith diameter varies from 0.15 to 1.10 cm and is located at 6 cm, at its maximum, around the real centre of the cross section. Percentage eccentricity might reach values of up to 26.5% and this parenchyma tissue represents between 1 and 5% of the total tree diameter.
  • ? The level of management had a significant effect on the eccentricity and percentage of the pith, while the climate significantly affected the pith percentage and the distance of pith from the real centre of the cross section. Tree height affected significantly all the parameters evaluated.

  • ? Water oak (Quercus nigra L.) is a tardily deciduous species commonly planted in afforestation projects in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley, USA. Field performance is often marked by low survival rates and top dieback, which may be associated with poor physiological quality of planting stock.
  • ? We investigated physiological status of cold stored (2–4 °C; CS) and freshly lifted (FL) seedlings during the period between lifting and planting (December — February). In mid-February, seedlings were transplanted into a controlled greenhouse environment for 90 d to evaluate post-transplant growth performance.
  • ? Net photosynthetic rates were positive until late January (generally greater in CS seedlings) and became negative thereafter. FL seedlings generally had lower LT50 values from freeze-induced electrolyte leakage (FIEL), reflecting greater cold hardiness. FIEL of foliage provided the best indicator of physiological status, though terminal buds may serve as a suitable substitute. All seedlings experienced top dieback following transplant; CS seedlings had less relative root-collar diameter, height, and root volume increments.
  • ? Cold storing seedlings did not appear to prolong dormancy, increase stress resistance, or hold promise as a means to improve outplanting success. Regardless of storage regime, seedlings appeared to be most cold hardy and perhaps stress resistant until late January.

  • ? The aim of this work was to study both the effects of genetic entry and competition by neighbouring trees on growth, yield, wood density traits and fibre properties of 20 Norway spruce clones grown in an experimental trial located in southern Finland. The material included 10 Finnish clones, 2 Russian clones and 8 provenance-hybrids clones, the latter ones representing crosses between Finnish and foreign parent trees.
  • ? We found that, compared to growth and yield, wood density traits and fibre properties showed, on average, lower phenotypic variations. Moreover, significant differences could be observed among the clones regardless of the trait (p < 0.05). Conversely, on average, no clear differences could be found between Finnish, Russian and provenance-hybrids clones in most of the studied traits.
  • ? The marked differences among the clones, and lack of clear differences among the provenances suggested that any ranking, regarding different traits, should be based on individual clones. The phenotypic correlations between different traits ranged from moderate to strong suggesting that selection based on one trait would affect other traits. Regardless of clone, the growth of trees (e.g. breast height diameter) decreased and the wood density increased with increasing competition by neighbouring trees, which was expressed by competition index.

  • ? In Mediterranean forestry, it is important to improve knowledge about mixed stands dynamics, including their productivity. Previous studies have focused on the interactions between different species (competition, reduction of competition and facilitation) depending on site, species composition and structure.
  • ? At the centre of this research are the possible differences between pure and mixed stands of Pinus sylvestris and Quercus pyrenaica in terms of density-growth relationships and volume growth per species.
  • ? Using data from the second and third Spanish National Forest Inventory (606 plots), volume increment models for these species were fitted. Both species displayed a similar density-growth pattern for pure and mixed stands, with a maximum volume growth at maximum density. Volume increment per occupied area was also found to be greater in mixed stands as opposed to pure stands, suggesting a species interaction with reduced levels of competition in the former. However, the total volume growth was generally lower in mixed stands since the growth rate of oak is much lower.
  • ? The results highlight the expedience of favouring P. sylvestris-Q. pyrenaica mixed stands with higher proportions of pine trees in order to gain the benefits of a more complex forest whilst retaining an acceptable level of wood production.

  • ? The performance of ten commonly used taper equations for predicting both stem form and volume in balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill], red spruce[Picea rubens (Sarg.)], and white pine[Pinus strobus (L.)] in the Acadian Region of North America was investigated.
  • ? Results show that the Kozak (2004) and Bi (2000) equations were superior to the other equations in predicting diameter inside bark for red spruce and white pine, while the Valentine and Gregoire (2001) equation performed slightly better for balsam fir.
  • ? For stem volume, the Clark et al. (1991) equation provided the best predictions across all species when upper stem diameter measurements were available, while the Kozak (2004) and compatible taper equation of Fang et al. (2000) performed well when those measurements were unavailable.
  • ? The incorporation of crown variables substantially improved stem volume predictions (mean absolute bias reduction of 7–15%; root mean square error reduction of 10–15%) for all three species, but had little impact on stem form predictions.
  • ? The best taper equation reduced the predicted root mean square error by 16, 39, and 45% compared to estimates from the widely used Honer (1965) regional stem volume equations for balsam fir, red spruce, and white pine, respectively.
  • ? When multiple taper equations exist for a certain species, the use of the geometric mean of all predictions is an attractive alternative to selecting the “best” equation.

  • ? Environmental determinants of wood properties variation were examined in Eucalyptus globulus, a globally important hardwood plantation species, in southern Tasmania, Australia.
  • ? Radial variation in wood properties, measured with the SilviScan system, were re-scaled from distance to time abscissa using stem radial growth data measured with dendrometers. With this re-scaled data it was possible to evaluate how water availability and temperature affected wood density, microfibril angle (MFA) and fibre and vessel transverse dimensions in irrigated and non-irrigated trees.
  • ? Wood density, fibre radial diameter and MFA were sensitive to water availability. Wood density increased and fibre radial diameter decreased in response to reduced water availability. When high water availability was maintained, wood density was negatively correlated with temperature. Together, temperature and soil matric potential explained about 60% of temporal variation in wood density variation. In contrast MFA was not related to temperature but decreased with increasing water stress. Slower growing trees also had lower MFA than faster growing trees. Slower growing trees had a larger number of vessels per unit area of wood than faster growing trees within this even aged stand. However, vessel radius to the 4th power was significantly higher in faster growing trees than in slower growing trees.
  • ? Overall, E. globulus wood properties were sensitive to temporal changes in environmental conditions (particularly water availability) and associated growth rates. The data provided support for the hypothesis that growth rates are hydraulically mediated.

  • ? The aim of this work was to examine the anatomy and functioning of secondary xylem in stems in relation to the decline of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.).
  • ? We tested the hypothesis that declining trees show changes in the structure of wood, which result in impaired water transport.
  • ? Anatomical analyses were carried out on wood samples (comprising all annual rings formed during the 30 years life of the analysed trees) collected at breast height from the main stem of healthy, weakened and dead ash trees. The width of annual wood increments, the diameter and density of earlywood vessels were measured and the theoretical hydraulic conductivity index through the secondary xylem calculated by application of Hagen-Poisseuille’s formula.
  • ? Anatomical characteristics changed both with the age of trees and in response to unfavorable factors. The largest vessels were observed in healthy trees, which implied that they had the highest hydraulic conductivity index, whereas trees considered to be in decline produce smaller vessels and hence had reduced conductivity.

  • ? The physical properties of wood and the associated variations within and between trees were evaluated by analysing 770 small specimens of clear wood from 11 Pinus sylvestris L. trees thinned from 3 plantations.
  • ? Within-tree variations in basic density or volumetric shrinkage increased with cambial age and decreased with increasing ring width. The effect of the height in the stem on wood properties was considered indirect and height was not included as an explanatory variable in the mixed models proposed to estimate basic density and volumetric shrinkage.
  • ? The models had random components for the intercept parameter and explained 52.5% of the total variance in basic density and 56% of the total variance in volumetric shrinkage. Linear shrinkage in the direction of the grain was extremely variable.
  • ? Between-tree variation and between-plot variation in the physical properties of wood were high, considering that all trees sampled were growing in similar sites and stands. It would then be desirable to predict physical properties of wood on living trees in order to use the quality of wood as a criterion for timber tree selection in thinnings.

  • ? For assessing forest thinning effects at large (i.e. continental) scale, data scarcity and technical limitations prevent the application of localized or individual-based thinning models.
  • ? Here we present a simple general framework to analyze and predict the effects of thinning on growth and mortality, including the following stand density development. The effects are modeled in relative terms so that the model can be parameterized based on any thinning experiment that includes an unthinned control, regardless of site conditions and stand age.
  • ? The model was tested against observed thinning effects on growth and mortality from five temperate and boreal species (all species pooled r 2 = 0.51). It predicted a maximum increase in net stem biomass increment of 16% and a reduction in density-related mortality of 75% compared to un-thinned conditions at stand densities of around 70% of the maximum (increment optimal density).
  • ? A sensitivity analysis revealed overlapping ranges of near optimal density (net increment within 95% of optimal) among all tested species, suggesting that one thinning scenario can be used for many species. The simple and general formulation of thinning effects based on only five parameters allows easy integration with a wide range of generic forest growth models.

  • ? Understanding tree mortality processes across time requires long term studies. Spatiotemporal patterns of mortality in a 200 years-old mono-layered Norway spruce stand were evaluated to determine what factors affected individual-tree mortality.
  • ? We performed an analysis on two surveys (1993 and 2005) in a 1-ha permanent plot in the Paneveggio forest (Eastern Italian Alps). Tree diameter and age distribution between surveys were compared. We examined spatial patterns of living and dead trees before 1993, in 1993 and in 2005 using univariate and bivariate Ripley’s K(d) function, and a kernel estimator of local crowding. A logistic model was used to assess the effects of diameter, age, recent growth and competitive pressure on tree mortality.
  • ? Spatial pattern analysis indicated mortality was associated to tree neighbourhood (neighbour effect at 2–5 m). An increment of regularization of tree spatial pattern occurred due to density-dependent mortality. Logistic regression showed tree diameter and recent growth were determinant on mortality risk during the monitoring period.
  • ? Even if the stand is relatively aged, mortality dynamics are those typical of stem exclusion stage. Mortality was related to competitive dynamics, and small suppressed trees with slow growth rate had higher probability to die.
