家畜生产中,母性行为是一个非常重要的性状。母猪选择中都注重其产仔数的提高,在提高产仔数同时,还要求它们能够成功喂养所产后代,因此改善提高母猪母性行为性状对仔猪的成活及生长至关重要。母猪的母性行为性状主要是指对仔猪尖叫反应、恐惧行为、攻击行为、育幼行为等,这些性状一般部分地受遗传控制,故可选择提高母性行为性状以改善母猪性能。本文综述了母猪母性行为性状及其遗传研究进展,讨论了母性行为与仔猪成活率之间的关系以及在选择、生产、管理中的应用;并对母性行为遗传研究提出一些看法,以期对国内家畜行为遗传研究起到推动作用。  相似文献

Here we review information on maternal behaviour in dogs, defined as a combination of all the acts of the mother towards her offspring, which begins before parturition and continues until weaning. In dogs, maternal care is measured using the most commonly observed behaviours, such as the time spent in contact, licking/grooming and nursing of the puppies. Since newborn puppies have a very limited capacity for movement, maternal interaction is essential to their survival, nourishment and protection. It is also an important element of the bonding process between puppies and the bitch and is thought to play a role in the social development of the puppies. Nevertheless, some questions still need to be clarified, such as the best way to quantify factors that may interfere with maternal behaviour. In recent studies, maternal care, or maternal style, was measured using a scoring system and found to be influenced by factors such as litter size, breed and parity, or even human interaction. However, the impact of the emotional state of the bitch and the quality of maternal behaviour on puppy survival and development remain unclear. The long-lasting effects of mother–puppy interactions on puppy behaviour during their adult life are still poorly understood, despite their importance for breeders who wish to prevent future problem behaviours.  相似文献

The objective of this paper was to adapt gene-flow methodology for the calculation of economic weights (EW) for direct and maternal traits and trait components in sheep and to apply this methodology to the Suffolk breed in the Czech Republic. Computer programs were developed in which annual-lambing sheep production systems with purebreeding or partial terminal crossing were simulated. Using these programs, the EW for 12 production and functional traits were estimated for i) Suffolk sires whose sons were used both in purebreeding and in terminal crossing with the 4 dual-purpose breeds, Romanov, Sumavska, Romney, and Merinolandschaf; and ii) Suffolk sires used only for terminal crossing. For case (i), the EW were at first calculated separately for the purebreeding system and for the crossing systems with the 4 dual-purpose breeds in dam position. Compound EW for the general breeding goal for Suffolk were then estimated as weighted averages from the EW in the 5 subsystems. Standardized EW were calculated by multiplying the marginal EW with the genetic SD of the trait, and relative EW were defined as absolute values of the standardized EW expressed as percentage of the sum of the absolute values of the standardized EW over all traits. The 5 most important trait components for Suffolk sires whose sons were used both in purebreeding and in terminal crossing were (relative EW given in parentheses): the direct components of survival rate until weaning (21.0%), daily BW gain until weaning (14.1%), survival rate at birth (14.0%), the maternal component of survival rate until weaning (10.7%), and litter size at lambing (7.6%). There were only small differences between the relative EW calculated for the whole system with pure- and crossbreeding and the relative EW for the purebred system within the Suffolk breed. Therefore, selection of Suffolk rams using a selection index based on the compound EW is expected to be of high efficiency in all of the simulated breeding systems. Only direct traits were relevant for Suffolk sires used only for terminal crossing; the most important (range of relative EW calculated for the 4 crossing systems given in parentheses) were survival rate until weaning (35.2 to 36.5%), daily BW gain until weaning (24.2 to 26.3%), and survival rate at birth (23.7 to 24.8%).  相似文献

In livestock, improving maternal reactivity towards the litter is an important issue in breeding strategies to promote production and animal welfare. As of yet, no studies have investigated the within-breed genetic variation of maternal reactivity in sheep. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters of maternal reactivity traits. A total of 1,095 primiparous and 1,441 multiparous Romane ewes were phenotyped 24 hr postlambing using a behavioural test (arena test, AT) over a 10-year experimental period. The test consisted of three successive phases evaluating the ewe's attraction to her litter, reactivity to separation from her litter, and reactivity to a conflict between attraction to her litter and avoidance of a motionless human. The ewes were reared exclusively on rangelands (South of France) and lambed outdoors in the spring. High-pitched bleating and low-pitched bleating in the AT were mostly highly heritable (0.39‒0.46). Heritabilities were moderate for proximity to the litter in the presence of a human (0.27) and low for locomotion and vigilance in the AT (0.09‒0.15). The measurements of a given behaviour in the three phases of the AT were highly genetically correlated. Few genetic correlations were found between the different behavioural traits in the AT, the highest correlations being between high-pitched bleating and low-pitched bleating (−0.43 to −0.77). In conclusion, our findings demonstrate moderate-to-high heritability for maternal reactivity traits. These traits could be included in genetic selection schemes to enhance maternal attachment provided there is no unfavourable link with other production traits.  相似文献

The impact of gestational dam restraint stress on progeny immune and neuroendocrine temporal hormone responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge was assessed. Maternal stress (5-min snout snare restraint stress during days 84 to 112 of gestation) increased (P < 0.05) the magnitude of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin-6, epinephrine (E), norepinephrine, and serum amyloid A (SAA) production following LPS infusion in the offspring. Moreover, these effects appear to be dependent on gender for TNF-α, E, and cortisol production. However, maternal stress did not affect (P > 0.05) the normalization of proinflammatory cytokines or neuroendocrine hormones produced following LPS. Collectively, these results indicate that maternal stress impacts aspects of the proinflammatory cytokine and stress hormone response in their progeny following LPS dosing of the offspring. This response is potentially responsible in part for the resultant changes to SAA production. Because several of the changes observed here are dependent on pig gender, these results are also the first evidence that inherent epigenetic factors coupled with maternal stress impact the cumulative response to stress and LPS in young pigs.  相似文献

Published information on relative performance of beef breed crosses was used to derive combined estimates of purebred breed values for predominant temperate beef breeds. The sources of information were largely from the United States, Canada, and New Zealand, although some European estimates were also included. Emphasis was on maternal traits of potential economic importance to the suckler beef production system, but some postweaning traits were also considered. The estimates were taken from comparison studies undertaken in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, each with representative samples of beef breeds used in temperate agriculture. Weighting factors for breed-cross estimates were derived using the number of sires and offspring that contributed to that estimate. These weights were then used in a weighted multiple regression analysis to obtain single purebred breed effects. Both direct additive and maternal additive genetic effects were estimated for preweaning traits. Important genetic differences between the breeds were shown for many of the traits. Significant regression coefficients were estimated for the effect of mature weight on calving ease, both maternal and direct additive genetic, survival to weaning direct, and birth weight direct. The breeds with greater mature weight were found to have greater maternal genetic effects for calving ease but negative direct genetic effects on calving ease. A negative effect of mature weight on the direct genetic effect of survival to weaning was observed. A cluster analysis was done using 17 breeds for which information existed on nine maternal traits. Regression was used to predict breed-cross-specific heterosis using genetic distance. Only five traits, birth weight, survival to weaning, cow fertility, and preweaning and postweaning growth rate had enough breed-cross-specific heterosis estimates to develop a prediction model. The breed biological values estimated provide a basis to predict the biological value of crossbred suckler cows and their offspring.  相似文献

Farm mammals generally express seasonal variations in their production traits, thus inducing changing availability of fresh derived animal products (meat, milk and cheese) or performances (horses). This is due to a more or less marked seasonal birth distribution in sheep and goats, in horses but not cattle. Birth peak occurs at the end of winter-early spring, the most favourable period for the progeny to survive. Most species show seasonal variations in their ovulation frequency (presence or absence of ovulation), spermatogenic activity (from moderate decrease to complete absence of sperm production), gamete quality (variations in fertilization rates and embryo survival), and also sexual behaviour. The intimate mechanism involved is a complex combination of endogenous circannual rhythm driven and synchronized by light and melatonin. Profound and long-term neuroendocrine changes involving different neuromediator systems were described to play a role in these processes. In most species artificial photoperiodic treatments consisting of extra-light during natural short days (in sheep and goats and mares) or melatonin during long days (in sheep and goats) are extensively used to either adjust the breeding season to animal producer needs and/or to completely overcome seasonal variations of sperm production in artificial insemination centres. Pure light treatments (without melatonin), especially when applied in open barns, could be considered as non-invasive ones which fully respect animal welfare. Genetic selection could be one of the future ways to decrease seasonality in sheep and goats.  相似文献

Hampshire and Landrace sows and crossbreds of the two breeds were used to determine heterosis and recombination effects for milk production, milk composition, and litter traits at birth and d 21. Twelve mating types were represented in this study: two purebred, two F1, two F2, two F3, and four backcross. Information was gathered on a total of 358 litters over four farrowing seasons. Milk production was measured at d 10 and 20 of litter age according to the weigh-suckle-weigh procedure. Milk samples were collected at d 10 and 20 of litter age and evaluated for percentages of fat (PCFA), protein (PCPR), lactose (PCLA), and solids-not-fat (PCSN). The model used to evaluate litter traits at birth included main effects of mating type, parity, and farrowing season. The model used for milk production and milk composition traits included these main effects and number of pigs nursed as a covariate. Estimates of maternal genetic effects showed that Landrace females were superior to Hampshire females for number born (NB), number born alive (NBA), litter birth weight (LBW), adjusted 21-d litter weight (ALW), and milk production at d 10 of litter age (WT10). Hampshires were superior to Landrace for PCPR at d 10 of litter age and PCSN at d 10 and 20 of litter age. Heterosis effects were significant (P less than .05) for NBA (.97) and LBW (1.46 kg). Maternal heterosis effects were significant for LBW (3.94 kg; P less than .01). Epistatic recombination losses in the offspring were significant for LBW (6.80 kg; P less than .05). Differences in maternal performance of reciprocal F1 dams were generally not significant. Heterosis and recombination effects were not significant for milk production or milk composition.  相似文献

Epigenetics provides a molecular mechanism of inheritance that is not solely dependent on DNA sequence and that can account for non-Mendelian inheritance patterns. Epigenetic changes underlie many normal developmental processes, and can lead to disease development as well. While epigenetic effects have been studied in well-characterized rodent models, less research has been done using agriculturally important domestic animal species. This review will present the results of current epigenetic research using farm animal models (cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens). Much of the work has focused on the epigenetic effects that environmental exposures to toxicants, nutrients and infectious agents has on either the exposed animals themselves or on their direct offspring. Only one porcine study examined epigenetic transgenerational effects; namely the effect diet micronutrients fed to male pigs has on liver DNA methylation and muscle mass in grand-offspring (F2 generation). Healthy viable offspring are very important in the farm and husbandry industry and epigenetic differences can be associated with production traits. Therefore further epigenetic research into domestic animal health and how exposure to toxicants or nutritional changes affects future generations is imperative.  相似文献

The EU Commission issued a regulation in 2003, which requires all member states to implement a breeding programme for resistance to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in sheep by selecting for specific alleles of the prion protein (PrP) gene. A key concern with regard to this regulation was that the intensive selection programmes, designed to increase resistance to scrapie, may have a negative impact on a range of other economically important production, reproduction, and disease traits in sheep. Such problems could arise for a number of reasons. Firstly, a number of breeds have a low frequency of the resistant PrP allele. Secondly, there may be a negative association between the resistant allele and animal performance. Thirdly, selection for scrapie resistance may reduce the rate of improvement towards current breeding goals. The evidence concerning the relationship between PrP genotype and reproduction, production, and disease traits is the subject of this review. We conclude that there is no evidence for a negative association between PrP genotype and reproduction traits (e.g. litter size), lamb performance traits (e.g. growth rate, conformation, carcass composition) or milk production. There is, however, a distinct paucity of information on the relationship between the PrP gene and disease traits. In this context it is noted that there are a number of genes located on chromosome 13, in close proximity to the PrP gene, that are involved in intracellular cell signalling, apoptosis, phagocytosis, and immune function. Thus further direct studies of key disease traits associated with sheep production systems are warranted.  相似文献

The knowledge of the interaction between mother and offspring might contribute to enhance the welfare of the offspring and to improve the reproductive efficiency of the cow. However, there is still little information available about such interaction in some cattle breeds. A series of observational studies were set up, addressing the mother–offspring relationships of Nelore, Guzerat and Gyr cattle breeds. Firstly, the behaviour of cows and calves around the time of parturition was described, and then, the underlying factors that affect the calves' survival and development were studied. Special attention was given to the failure or delay in the first suckling. The results together are indicative of genetic variability for some studied variables, indicating the possibility of selection for calf vigour (using latency to stand up and latency to suckle as its indicators) and maternal ability (using percentage of time in contact with the calves), in spite of the estimates of heritability were low and presented high standard deviation for all variables. The individual variability in their suckling behaviour and the efficiency in first suckling cannot be explained by a single isolated underlying factor. By now, there are some results available, although there are many questions without answers. The field is still open for the development of future research.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine how increased feed intake of the sow during early to mid-gestation affects sow performance and the muscle fiber number, performance, and technological meat quality of the offspring. Thirty-nine pregnant sows (Landrace x Large White sows mated to Landrace or Large White boars) in their fourth parity were assigned to one of three treatments: 1) the sows were either fed restrictively (control = 15 MJ of NE/d from d 1 to 90, then 24 MJ of NE/d from d 91 to 112, and again 15 MJ of NE/d from d 113 to 115 of gestation); 2) fed ad libitum from d 25 to 50 (A25-50); or 3) ad libitum from d 25 to 70 (A25-70) and as control in the remaining periods. The offspring were weaned at 4 wk of age and had free access to feed from 2 wk of age until slaughter. They were slaughtered litterwise at an average body weight of 104 +/- 14 kg. Estimates for total, primary (P-), and secondary (S-) muscle fiber number; muscle fiber area; and DNA and RNA content were analyzed in semitendinosus muscle (ST) samples from the heaviest, middle, and lightest weight (LW) pigs of each sex within litter selected at slaughter. Technological meat quality traits (pH at 24 h postmortem, drip loss, Minolta color, and pigment) were analyzed in longissimus dorsi muscle. Fiber number, fiber area, and concentrations and content of DNA and RNA of the offspring were not significantly affected by increased maternal nutrition. The ST muscle weight was lower in offspring from A25-50 than control sows (P = 0.019). Average daily gain, carcass weight, and the muscle deposition rate also were numerically lower for A25-50 than control and A25-70 pigs. An interaction between treatment and pig weight was found for muscle deposition rate (P = 0.006), in that LW pigs from treatment A25-50 had a lower deposition rate than LW pigs from control. We found no effect of treatment on the meat quality traits in the offspring. Also, barrows had a higher (P < 0.05) number of P-fibers, higher daily gain, and carcass weight than female pigs. No differences were found on any meat quality traits between sexes. Thus, ad libitum feeding of pregnant sows from d 25 to 50 or d 25 to 70 of gestation did not have any beneficial effect on muscle fiber number and area in the offspring. It seems that maternal ad libitum feeding from d 25 to 50 in gestation had a negative effect on postnatal muscle growth, with especially the LW pigs being affected.  相似文献

Variance components for production traits were estimated using different models to evaluate maternal effects. Data analysed were records from the South African pig performance testing scheme on 22 224 pigs from 18 herds, tested between 1990 and 2008. The traits analysed were backfat thickness (BFAT), test period weight gain (TPG), lifetime weight gain (LTG), test period feed conversion ratio (FCR) and age at slaughter (AGES). Data analyses were performed by REML procedures in ASREML, where random effects were successively fitted into animal and sire models to produce different models. The first animal model had one random effect, the direct genetic effects, while the additional random effects were maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. In the sire model, the random effects fitted were sire and maternal grand sire effects. The best model considered the covariance between direct and maternal genetic effects or between sire and maternal grand sire effects. Fitting maternal genetic effects into the animal model reduced total additive variance, while the total additive variance increased when maternal grand sire effects were fitted into the sire model. The correlations between direct and maternal genetic effects were all negative, indicating antagonism between these effects, hence the need to consider both effects in selection programmes. Direct genetic correlations were higher than other correlations, except for maternal genetic correlations of FCR with TPG, LTG and AGES. There has been direct genetic improvement and almost constant maternal ability in production traits as shown by trends for estimated (EBVs) and maternal breeding values (MBVs), while phenotypic trends were similar to those for EBVs. These results suggest that maternal genetic effects should be included in selection programmes for these production traits. Therefore, the animal–maternal model may be the most appropriate model to use when estimating genetic parameters for production traits in this population.  相似文献

Several studies have noted high negative correlations between maternal genetic and direct additive effects and their influence on additive and maternal heritability of early growth traits in sheep. Multigeneration data from the Suffolk Sire Reference Scheme (SSRS) were used to investigate the effect of data structure on estimates of direct and maternal (co)variances for lamb 8-wk weight. In all analyses the additive, maternal genetic, maternal environmental, and residual effects were fitted along with the covariance between direct and maternal additive effects. The contributions of particular genetic relationships to the estimates were studied by analyzing subsets of the SSRS data. A further eight subsets were formed having 10% or 50% of the dams with their own records and having one or two, three or four, five or six, and more than six offspring per dam. Analysis of data having only 10% of the dams with their own record and one or two offspring records yielded a high negative correlation (-0.99) between direct and maternal genetic effects. However, the seven other data sets with more records per dam or a higher proportion of dams with their own records produced values of -0.35 to -0.51. Data structure and the number of dams and granddams with records are important determinants of estimated direct and maternal effects in early growth traits.  相似文献

A major proportion of the costs of pork production is related to feed. The feed conversion rate (FCR) or residual feed intake (RFI) is thus commonly included in breeding programmes. Feeding behaviour traits do not directly have economic value but, if correlated with production traits, can be used as auxiliary traits. The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability of feeding behaviour traits and their genetic correlations with production traits in the Finnish Yorkshire pig population. The data were available from 3,235 pigs. Feeding behaviour was measured as the number of visits per day (NVD), time spent in feeding per day (TPD), daily feed intake (DFI), time spent feeding per visit (TPV), feed intake per visit (FPV) and feed intake rate (FR). The test station phase was divided into five periods. Estimates of heritabilities of feeding behaviour traits varied from 0.17 to 0.47. Strong genetic correlations were obtained between behaviour traits in all periods. However, only DFI was strongly correlated with the production traits. Interestingly, a moderate positive genetic correlation was obtained between FR and backfat thickness (0.1–0.5) and between FR and average daily gain (0.3–0.4), depending on the period. Based on the results, there is no additional benefit from including feeding‐related traits other than those commonly used (FCR and RFI) in the breeding programme. However, if correlated with animal welfare, the feeding behaviour traits could be valuable in the breeding programme.  相似文献

Genetic evaluations for the U.S. swine industry are conducted by the eight purebred associations of the National Association of Swine Records. Within-herd evaluations of the growth traits (days to 105 kg [market] and backfat depth) were first reported in 1986. Analyses of the maternal traits (litter size at birth and weaning, and litter 21-d weight) were inaugurated in 1987. Expected progeny differences (EPD) are reported for all traits and for general, paternal, and maternal bioeconomic indexes. A sow productivity index combining only maternal traits is available. All records are adjusted according to National Swine Improvement Federation (NSIF) guidelines for effects such as number of pigs transferred at crossfostering and age at recorded observation prior to the BLUP evaluation. Within-herd analyses of individual contemporary groups are conducted immediately on receipt of performance records at each breed association office. All parents in the herd and the young pigs in the current group are evaluated. A report is returned to the breeder for use in herd selection and the EPD are placed in the pedigree file. The genetic base of each herd is defined as the first n tested pigs or litters, where n is the number of pigs registered annually within the herd. Change in mean EPD between groups is indicative of genetic trend. Periodic across-herd analyses are used to update interim within-herd analyses and a national sire summary is published.  相似文献

The genetic variation of plasma IGF-I in crossbred ewe lambs postweaning was evaluated together with its potential use as a physiological marker for selection in meat sheep. Genetic variation for IGF-I was analyzed among 1,246 young crossbred ewes that were the progeny of 30 sires from various maternal breeds and Merino dams. The estimate of heritability of IGF-I was 0.28 +/- 0.10, with sire breed not being significant. Genetic correlations were estimated between IGF-I and performance traits of the ewes, including feed intake, growth, body composition, wool, and reproduction over 3 matings. Although the genetic correlations had high standard errors because of the limited size of the data set, the correlation between IGF-I and grazing feed intake of the mature ewes at maintenance was positive (0.32 +/- 0.31). The genetic correlations of IGF-I with other traits ranged from positive and low to moderate for growth (0.05 to 0.36), positive for ultrasound eye muscle depth (0.15), and negative for ultrasound fat depth (-0.12) in the mature ewes, and close to zero for the wool traits. The genetic correlation between IGF-I and the average number of lambs born per ewe mated was negative (-0.18), whereas that for the average number of lambs weaned per ewe mated was positive (0.10). The parameters indicated that genetic variation exists for IGF-I in sheep, and selection for low IGF-I in young ewes may result in some reduction in feed intake and improvement in maintenance efficiency of mature ewes under grazing, with little impact on other production traits. However, the genetic correlations had high standard errors, and more precise estimates of these parameters are required for genetic evaluation and to predict with confidence the outcome of breeding programs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to study genetic (co)variation of broader behavioural traits in German shepherd dogs and to test whether there is maternal and litter influence on these traits. Data were extracted from the Swedish Dog Mentality Assessment (DMA) from 1989 to 2001 on 5959 German shepherd dogs. Based on previous results, personality traits were created from the 15 behavioural variables extracted from the test. These personality traits were (1) Playfulness, (2) Chase-proneness, (3) Curiosity/Fearlessness, and (4) Aggressiveness. A trait Boldness was constructed from all behaviour variables except those included in Aggressiveness. Mixed linear models with fixed effects of sex, test type, test year, test month, age, and judge were used. Models with all combinations of random effects of animal (direct genetic), genetic and non-genetic maternal, and litter were tested. The best model included effects of animal and litter. Direct heritability estimates were between 0.09 and 0.23, highest for Playfulness and Curiosity/Fearlessness. Maternal heritabilities were all low (0.01-0.08), lowest and not significant if litter or non-genetic maternal effects were included in the model. Additive genetic correlations among Playfulness, Chase-proneness, and Curiosity/Fearlessness were higher (0.54-0.74) than genetic correlations with Aggressiveness (0.29-0.40). Litter variance ratios (c2) were larger than the maternal heritabilities (0.03-0.10). Boldness had a direct heritability estimate of 0.27 and a direct genetic correlation with Aggressiveness of 0.37. We conclude that there is substantial additive genetic variation, that the mother has rather little influence (both genetically and environmentally) and that the litter seems to have a larger influence than the mother for these personality traits. Genetic improvement in these behaviour traits is thus possible.  相似文献
