The objectives of this study were to analyse risk factors for the prevalence of abomasal displacement in German Holstein cows. In the period from 02/01/1999 to 01/31/2000 five veterinary surgeons in Northern Lower Saxony registered all cases of abomasal displacement in German Holstein cows being under the official milk recording scheme. In total, the investigation included 160 farms and 9315 cows. An abomasal displacement was registered in 151 German Holstein cows, corresponding to a frequency of 1.6%. More than 75% of the abomasal displacements appeared during the first 30 days after calving. The left abomasal displacement (74.8%) was recorded more often than the right abomasal displacement (25.2%). Milk recording and pedigree data were supplied by the VIT (Vereinigte Informationssystem Tierhaltung), Verden, and merged with the own recordings. The influences of the calving month, the lactation number, the age at calving, the inbreeding coefficient, calving performance, duration of pregnancy, breed of calf sire, calf sire and the breeding values for the milk performance did not explain a significant part of the variation of the frequency of the abomasal displacement. Significant effects of the sire, birth of twins or even more calves and the herd were obtained for the leftsided abomasal displacement. For the rightsided abomasal displacement and for all abomasal displacements the herd effect was not significant. Heritability estimates using bivariate linear REML models were h2 = 0.043 +/- 0.012 for the leftsided abomasal displacement, and h2 = 0.007 +/- 0.004 for the rightsided abomasal displacement, respectively. Using the threshold model the heritabilities yielded estimates of h2 = 0.51 for the left abomasal displacement, and for the right abomasal displacement of h2 = 0.19, respectively.  相似文献

From 1996 to 2002 5159 cattle with abomasal displacement was treated in the Clinic for Cattle, School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. An analysis of systematic effects on influences on the length of survival following surgical correction of the abomasal displacement could be performed for 1411 cows. These animals were under the official milk recording scheme. Significant influences on lifetime after an abomasal displacement were interval between calving and diagnosis of disease, lactation number, type of abomasal displacement, inbreeding coefficient, calving difficulties, region of origin and sire of the calf. The lifetime after an abomasal displacement significantly differed between several months of calving and some sires of the cow. The individual milk yield in lactations before and after abomasal displacement of the cow was significant for the length of lifetime. The heritability estimate for length of lifetime after abomasal displacement using residual maximum likelihood (REML) in a linear animal model was h2 = 0.01-0.03.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to document the abomasal position during the peripartal period by ultrasonographic measurement to get more data about the topographic dynamic. In 12 dairy cows the abomasal position was measured daily from the 5th day before calving up to the 5th day after calving by a transabdominal ultrasonographic examination (5 MHz convex transducer). The abomasal position was described by means of 3 measured distances: (a) the distance between the cranial margin of the abomasum and the xiphoid cartilage, (b) the distance between the right margin of the abomasum and the median line and (c) the distance between the left margin of the abomasum and the median line. Prepartal the abomasal position was different from the position during the postpartal period. Its position was more cranially (p < 0.05) and more right laterally (p < 0.05). The left margin was not detectable at the left side of the mid-line ante partum. Directly after calving the left margin of the abomasum was found left of the linea alba (p < 0.05). These results show that there is a great influence of the gravid uterus on the abomasal position. The abomasum is positioned more cranially and more right lateral during the end of pregnancy. This position changes immediately after calving.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare abomasal luminal gas pressure and volume and perfusion of the abomasum in dairy cows with a left displaced abomasum (LDA) or abomasal volvulus (AV). ANIMALS: 40 lactating dairy cows (25 with an LDA and 15 with an AV). PROCEDURE: Abomasal luminal gas pressure and volume and pulse oximetry values for the caudal portion of the dorsal ruminal sac and abomasal wall were measured during laparotomy. Abomasal perfusion was assessed on the basis of abomasal O2 saturation (pulse oximetry) before correction of the LDA or AV. Abomasal perfusion was also assessed after correction of the LDA or AV by measuring venous O2 saturation in the right gastroepiploic vein and calculating the abomasal oxygen-extraction ratio. RESULTS: Abomasal luminal gas pressure and volume were higher in cattle with an AV than in cattle with an LDA. Abomasal O2 saturation was lower and abomasal oxygen-extraction ratio higher in cattle with an AV, compared with values in cattle with an LDA. In cows with an AV, lactate concentration in the gastroepiploic vein was greater than that in a jugular vein, whereas no difference in lactate concentrations was detected in cows with an LDA. Abomasal luminal gas pressure was positively correlated (r, 0.51) with plasma lactate concentration in the gastroepiploic vein and negatively correlated (r, -0.32) with abomasal O2 saturation determined by use of pulse oximetry. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Abomasal perfusion decreases as luminal pressure increases in cattle with an AV or LDA.  相似文献

The purpose of this survey was to evaluate the reproductive performance of dairy cows on problem farms in southern Iceland. In all 229 cows on 6 farms were studied. The animals were examined clinically by rectal palpation, once a month. Blood samples were taken 2–5 and 7–10 weeks after calving. The blood samples were analysed for the contents of glucose, urea, inorganic phosphate, calcium and magnesium. Milk samples for progesterone profiles were taken, by the farmer, every 4th day from day 10 postpartum until first oestrus. Because of this sampling method, 128 cows had no rise in progesterone levels, when milk sampling was stopped. These 128 animals were excluded from the study. The results are based on 101 animals. There was a large variation between cows in postpartum reproductive performance. In the total material 1st ovulation occurred later than reported in many other countries. Fifty percent of the cows had ovulated 35 days after calving and 90 percent 70 days after calving. The first luteal phase was short in about 60 % of the cows. The progesterone values assayed from those short cycles were lower than the values assayed from the following cycle. First artificial insemination (ai) was on the average 77 days postpartum (pp). The conception rate to first service was 49 %. Of 100 milk samples taken at the time of ai, 20 had high progesterone value. This indicates a high frequency of luteal phase inseminations.Clinical ketosis was diagnosed in 35 cows. Of these, 31 had a low glucose value. Cows with clinical ketosis ovulated, on the average, later than other animals and 24 ovulated later than 40 days pp. The results indicated that the fertility problems of these cows studied were late ovulations, low conception rate, probably in part, due to luteal phase inseminations, and a high frequency of ketosis which could be caused by low quality feedstuff.  相似文献

During the last six weeks of the dry period, eight Holstein-Friesian cows were fed a restricted amount of grass silage; after calving, a mixture of maize silage and concentrates was offered in a feeding regimen designed to induce a displacement of the abomasum. In the first month after calving, the cows were monitored for the following variables: feed intake and composition, milk production, the position of the abomasum, and the pH and osmolality of the rumen contents. In five of the eight cows, a left displacement of the abomasum occurred between four and 21 days after calving in the absence of other diseases. The displacement was temporary, lasting between five and 36 consecutive hours and one or two days in two of the cows (floaters), and for three or more days in the other three. Before these three cows developed the displacement, their abomasum was 4.3 to 7.9 cm higher, its contents had a higher mean osmolality (+19.2 mosmol/kg), and the ratio of roughage to concentrates in their feed was lower (-0.87) than in the three cows that did not develop clinical signs of a displaced abomasum. There were no significant differences in these variables between the floaters and the healthy cows.  相似文献

We have studied the effect of plasma glucose level on the abomasal outflow rate of fluid using a hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp technique in dairy cows. Four nonpregnant, nonlactating cows were subjected to one of the following treatments: hyperinsulinemic normoglycemic clamp; hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemic clamp; hyperinsulinemic hyperglycemic clamp; or, as a control, an intravenous infusion of .9% sodium chloride in a Latin square design. The cows were previously fitted with a permanent fistula in the abomasum and the outflow rate of abomasal fluid was determined using Co-EDTA as a marker assuming that the outflow followed first-order kinetics. The abomasal pH was also registered. Insulin was infused continuously through a jugular catheter at a rate of 4.8 mU. kg(-1)min(-1) for 2.5 h in the three clamp treatments. A glucose solution was infused through the catheter at a variable rate to achieve a circulating concentration, near the preinfusion glucose level (approximately 4.1 mmol/L), 2 mmol/L below the preinfusion level, and 2 mmol/L above the preinfusion level for the three hyperinsulinemic treatments, respectively. There was a significant effect of treatment on the rate of abomasal outflow (P < .001). The rate of abomasal outflow was highest for the control treatment (7.8%/min). The slowest outflow was observed in the hyperglycemic cows (3.40%/min). The hypoglycemic and normoglycemic cows showed intermediate rates (6.0%/min and 5.2%/min, respectively). The rate of outflow for the hyperglycemic cows was significantly lower than for all the other treatments (P < .01). Abomasal pH was affected by treatment (P < .05). The highest pH was observed in the hyperglycemic cows (pH 2.3). The values for the other three treatments ranged from pH 1.9 to 2.0. These results show that hyperglycemia reduced the rate of outflow and increased the pH of abomasal fluid in dairy cows. An elevated plasma glucose level thus can be considered as a potential risk factor in the pathogenesis of left-displaced abomasum.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of curd formation within the abomasum, on the absorption of gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) from colostrum in newborn calves. DESIGN: An in vivo physiological study with controls, and in vitro examination of calf abomasal fluid. PROCEDURES: Newborn calves were taken from cows without allowing them to suckle. They were fed either 1.5 kg colostrum or 1.5 kg colostrum plus rennet, with intervals between calving and colostrum feeding ranging from 0.4 to 12.7 h. Absorption of proteins from the whey component of colostrum was assessed from the rise in activity of serum GGT. In in vitro studies, colostrum was incubated with bovine amniotic fluid, newborn calf abomasal fluid or newborn calf forestomach contents, with or without rennet, to test the curd inhibiting effects of components in the abomasal fluid of newborn calves. RESULTS: In vivo: addition of rennet to the colostrum feed reduced the proportion of calves with serum GGT activity below 500 U/L by 60%. In vitro: 43% of newborn calves lacked curd forming activity in their abomasal fluid, and that deficiency was corrected by adding rennet to the incubation medium. CONCLUSIONS: Some calves are born with low amounts of curd forming enzyme activity in the abomasum. This may compromise their ability to absorb large whey proteins from the first feed of colostrum. Adding rennet to the first colostrum feed may improve passive immunity in those calves.  相似文献

Free fatty acids, cholesterol and phospholipids in plasma were studied from 6 weeks before to 6 weeks after calving in 16 normal multiparous cows. The same plasma lipids were studied the day after calving in 20 normal primiparous cows. Ten of these were fed according to standards and the other 10 were overfed the last 3 weeks prepartum. The plasma lipids were also analysed in 16 cows with left displacement of the abomasum and fatty liver, and in 16 cows with ketosis with no or only slight fat infiltration of the liver. In the normal cows there was a rise in FFA-level and a reduction in cholesterol and phospholipids from 6 weeks before to the day after calving. Thereafter there was a reduction of FFA-level and rise in cholesterol and phospholipids. Increased feed intensity had no effect on plasma lipids at calving. The level of the plasma lipids in cows with fatty liver differed very much from the amounts in normal cows at corresponding time from calving. Cows with ketosis had high FFA-level but the amount of cholesterol and phospholipids differed very little from normal cows.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether various periparturient events or 305-day milk production during the previous lactation period were associated with abomasal displacement in dairy cows. DESIGN: Retrospective, case-control study. ANIMALS: 75 pairs of case and control cows from 3 university-owned and 3 commercial dairy herds. PROCEDURE: Cows with abomasal displacement were matched with control cows on the basis of herd of origin, breed, age, and calving date. Frequency of specific periparturient events during the period from 2 weeks prior to parturition to diagnosis of abomasal displacement, as well as milk production during the preceding lactation period, were compared between case and control cows. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses indicated that case cows were significantly more likely to have had retained placenta, ketosis, a stillborn calf, metritis, twins, or parturient paresis than were control cows. Dystocia, mastitis, and milk production during the previous lactation period were not associated with abomasal displacement. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Results indicated that a variety of periparturient events were associated with development of abomasal displacement among dairy cows.  相似文献

Case records of adult dairy cattle with abomasal ulcers admitted to the University of Pennsylvania from 1968 through 1980 were evaluated. Of 6,385 adult dairy cattle admitted during that period, 69 had abomasal ulcers of clinical importance. Of 43 ulcers that had perforated, 17 were associated with local peritonitis and 22 were associated with diffuse peritonitis; 4 had perforated so recently that peritonitis had not had time to develop. Perforated ulcers were found in 40 cows that had recently calved (32 cows with ulcers that had perforated within 4 weeks after calving) and often had concurrent disease(s) (39 cows with at least one other disease). Ten cows with local peritonitis survived, whereas only 2 of the cows with diffuse peritonitis survived.  相似文献

Fiftynine cases of abomasal displacement were registered during a 10 year period in a veterinary district in Norway with a dairy cow population of approx. 2500. Of these, 88% were left displacements and 12% right displacements. Ten per cent recovered spontaneously without subsequent relapse. Corrective surgery was performed on the remainder, and 92% of these recovered completely. Surgery was, in most cases, performed on the same day as the diagnosis of abomasal displacement was made. The displacements occurred at all times of the year: 86% of cases involved cows in third or subsequent lactation 95% were diagnosed within the period 4--64 days after calving, and 70% of the cows had been treated for other illness with disturbance of digestion during the week immediately prior to the demonstration of the displacement. In a further 25%, ketosis was diagnosed at the same time as the displacement. Etiology and pathogenesis are discussed.  相似文献

This study was to determine the effect of anionic salts on health and production performance of Holstein cows during the peripartum period. Twenty-four Holstein cows during the peripartum period were selected and divided into control group and experimental group. Twelve Holstein dairy cows in control group were fed diets with original concentrate, while twelve cows in experimental group were fed diets with concentrates adding anionic salts for the last 21 days before expected calving. All animals were ad libitum fed with the same diets after calving. The results showed that urine pH maintained 5.7 to 6.9,and blood pH was decreased significantly compared to control group (P<0.05). However, the contents of plasma Ca,glucose and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in experimental group were significantly increased in 1 d after calving (P<0.05). What's more, the incidences of hypocalcemia, milk fever, retained placenta, displaced abomasum and mastitis were reduced in experimental group and the incidences of retained placenta was significantly decreased (P<0.05). No significant difference was detected in milk yield between two groups (P>0.05). In summary, supplementation of anionic salts concentrate could help to keep the health and plasma Ca homeostasis of Holstein cows.  相似文献

Seventeen cows with right displacement of the abomasum (rda) without abomasal volvulus, nine cows with abomasal volvulus and 10 clinically healthy cows were examined ultrasonographically. A 5.0 MHz transducer was used to scan the eighth to 12th intercostal spaces and the cranial and caudal aspects of the flank on the right side. The position, size and dorsal and ventral margins of the abomasum were determined at each imaging position. In both groups of diseased cows, the ventral abomasum contained fluid ingesta, which appeared hypoechogenic with diffuse echogenic stippling. The abomasal folds could be seen clearly as echogenic sickle-shaped structures within the ingesta. The dorsal abomasal gas cap varied in size and was characterised by reverberation artefacts, which appeared as echogenic lines running parallel to the body surface. Compared with the healthy cows, the abomasum was larger and located significantly closer to the midline of the dorsum in both groups of cows. Compared with the cows with rda, the abomasum in the cows with abomasal volvulus was significantly smaller in the eighth intercostal space and significantly larger in the 11th intercostal space. It was not possible to differentiate between rda and abomasal volvulus on the basis of the ultrasonographic findings.  相似文献

Abomasal fistulas in dairy cows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abomasal fistulas were corrected surgically in 9 adult Holstein cows. Six cows had a history of right paramedian abomasopexy (RPA), and 2 cows had had a percutaneous abomasopexy using the blind-stitch technique (BSA). Fistulas developed from 2 weeks to 12 months after the RPA or BSA. In 1 cow, history was not available beyond 2 years, and no surgery had been performed in that time. All fistulas were in the right paramedian area and were draining blood and/or ingesta from necrotic abomasal tissue (8 cows) or ruminal tissue (1 cow). Surgery was performed immediately in cows with consistent hemorrhage from the fistulated tissue (4 cows). Surgery was delayed to reduce rumen contents if bleeding was absent or considered negligible (4 cows) or to stabilize the patient (1 cow). General anesthesia was used in 7 cows, local anesthesia in 2 cows. Outcome following the fistula resection was successful in the 7 cows discharged from the clinic. The occurrence of abomasal fistulation is probably related to nonabsorbable sutures penetrating the abomasal lumen during the abomasopexy procedure resulting in infection of the incision or body wall.  相似文献

We determined the abomasal emptying rates of Holstein-Friesian cows at different stages of lactation, with left displaced abomasum (LDA), or immediately after surgical correction of LDA or abomasal volvulus (AV). D-xylose (0.5 g/kg body weight [BW], 50% solution) was injected into the abomasum in healthy cows (group 1, 4-7 days in milk [DIM], n = 7; group 2, 90-120 DIM, n = 7; group 3, > 300 DIM, n = 7) and in cows with LDA (n = 10; group 4). D-xylose was injected into the abomasum during right flank laparotomy in cows with LDA (n = 22; group 5) and cows with AV (n = 15; group 6). The time to maximal serum D-xylose concentration was used as an index of emptying rate. The abomasal emptying rates for cows in groups 1, 2, and 3 were similar, whereas emptying was slower in cows with LDA and in cows after surgical correction of LDA or AV. The abomasal emptying rate of cows with LDA was slowed to a greater extent immediately after surgery, when compared to the rate obtained before surgery. There was no difference in abomasal emptying rate immediately after surgical correction between cows with LDA or AV. The results indicate that the increased incidence of LDA in the first month of lactation is not associated with an intrinsic decrease in abomasal emptying rate in healthy cows. Our findings also demonstrate that surgical correction further slows the emptying rate in cows with LDA.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between serum calcium (Ca) and inorganic phosphorus (IP) values and urine pH of cows fed common rations without the addition of anionic salts in late pregnancy. One hundred and seven Holstein cows, having completed two or more lactations and with an expected calving date within the next seven days were selected from two herds. In order to determine levels of serum Ca and IP and urine pH, blood and urine samples were collected seven to one days before parturition. Of the 107 sampled cows, 17 developed recumbency after calving and were considered to be affected by milk fever. There were significant ( p<0.01 ) negative correlations between urine pH and serum Ca, IP and the ratio of Ca to IP, The urine pH, and levels of serum Ca and IP measured within 48 h prior to parturition differed significantly ( p<0.001 ) between recumbent and non-recumbent cows. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of urine pH test 48 h prior to parturition, using a cut off level of above pH 8.25, were 100%, 81%, 55%, and 100%, respectively. These signify that monitoring urine pH within 48 h prior to parturition is a sensitive method to assess the risk of parturient paresis. The results of this study emphasize the importance of acid-base status of the animal in the pathophysiology of milk fever.  相似文献

Serum cholic acid (SCA) and serum chenodeoxycholic acid (SCDCA) concentrations were determined in healthy dairy cows by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The levels of these two primary bile acids were correlated with the cows' reproductive status. The lowest concentrations were measured in dry cows (SCA: 7.8 +/- 3.3 mumol/l, SCDCA.: 1.5 +/- 1.0 mumol/l). In freshly calved cows SCA and SCDCA was 17.8 +/- 6.9 mumol/l and 2.3 +/- 1.0 mumol/l, respectively, while in milking cows SCA and SCDCA was 15.8 +/- 5.7 and 2.3 +/- 0.8 mumol/l, respectively. SCA concentration showed a characteristic change on the days immediately after calving: on calving day it was close to the mean SCA concentration found for dry cows, then it underwent a striking abrupt rise and reached the value typical of post-parturient cows by post-partum (PP) day 4-5. Cholic acid was found to be the major primary bile acid in the blood of dairy cows. In dry cows the SCA:SCDCA ratio is 5:1. If the serum bile acid concentration rises, the SCA:SCDCA ratio will increase further.  相似文献

Twenty-seven cows with antibodies to bovine leukemia virus were bled before, during and after calving. All serum samples were tested quantitatively for bovine leukemia virus antibodies using both the agar-gel immunodiffusion test with a glycoprotein antigen and the radioimmunoprecipitation assay with an internal p24 protein antigen. A significant fall (P less than 0.001) in bovine leukemia virus-antibody titer was demonstrated with both tests at the time of calving, with a subsequent rise in antibody titer within one month of parturition. Bovine leukemia virus antibodies were not detectable using the agar-gel immunodiffusion test in two of these cows at the time of calving.  相似文献
