Summary

Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum musae, is the major disease affecting the quality of banana fruit during storage. To control banana anthracnose, the combined effects of coatings with gum arabic [GA; at 5, 10, 15 or 20% (w/v)] and 0.75% (w/v) chitosan (CH) were investigated and compared to untreated controls. In vitro results showed significant (P < 0.05) inhibition of mycelial growth and conidial germination of C. musae in all combined treatments compared to the untreated controls after 7 d of incubation at room temperature (25°C). However, potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates amended with 10% (w/v) GA gave the most promising results among all test treatments in suppressing mycelial growth (86%) and inhibiting conidial germination (80%), while no effective inhibition of conidial germination was observed in the controls. In vivo results confirmed that 10% (w/v) GA was the optimum concentration to control fruit decay (70%), while showing efficacy on the reduction of growth of C. musae on artificially inoculated banana fruit. The combined coatings of GA + CH also significantly delayed ripening in terms of weight loss, fruit firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity. These results support the possibility of using 10% (w/v) GA combined with 0.75% (w/v) CH as an alternative strategy to control post-harvest anthracnose disease in banana fruit.  相似文献

Sap burn injury and postharvest diseases are major causes of mango fruit quality deterioration, resulting in considerable postharvest losses in many countries. Susceptibility of selected cultivars of mango in Sri Lanka to sap burn injury and the incidence of anthracnose and Aspergillus rot of mango were examined in this study. Volatile components of non-aqueous (oil) phase were investigated using GC-MS, and artificial inoculation studies were carried out to assess disease resistance with Colletotrichum queesnlandicum (KC 820802) and Aspergillus niger (KC 820801). It was observed that the popular ‘Karuthakolumban’ and ‘Willard’ mangoes with high sap flow at harvest and high sap burn incidence were more susceptible to sap burn injury compared with ‘Chembaddan’ and ‘Ambalavi’ mangoes. Cultivar variations in susceptibility to Aspergillus rot of mangoes are reported for the first time in this study, where ‘Willard’ mangoes were more resistant to Aspergillus rot than other cultivars. The sap exudates of ‘Ambalavi’ and ‘Karuthakolumban’ mangoes were observed to contain the preformed antifungal compounds 5-pentadecyl resorcinol and 5-(Heptadeca-8,11- dienyl) benzene1,3-diol, with variety ‘Ambalavi’ showing a high resorcinol level. These cultivars were found to be resistant to anthracnose disease. These results suggest that presence of sap volatiles is cultivar dependent and could be used to identify cultivars resistant to postharvest diseases and sap burn.  相似文献

Summary

The effect of Pichia membranefaciens on reducing post-harvest anthracnose rot caused by Colletotrichum acutatum in loquat fruit was investigated. Fruit were treated with different suspensions of P. membranefaciens before challenge with 1.0 105 spores ml–1 of C. acutatum, then incubated at 20°C for 6 d. The results showed that 1 108 colony-forming units (CFU) ml–1 of washed cell suspensions of the yeast provided better control of anthracnose rot than yeast in culture broth at the same concentration. Treatment with autoclaved cell cultures or culture filtrates did not prevent the incidence of disease. The concentration of a washed cell suspension of P. membranefaciens had a significant effect on the efficacy of controlling anthracnose rot in loquat fruit. At a concentration range from 1 106 to 1 109 CFU ml–1, the higher the concentration of the antagonist, the lower the incidence of the disease and the smaller the diameter of the lesions. In inoculated wounds of loquat fruit, populations of P. membranefaciens increased approx. 34-fold after 6 d of incubation at 20°C.Washed cell suspensions of P. membranefaciens also significantly inhibited spore germination and germ-tube growth of C. acutatum, in vitro. These results suggest that P. membranefaciens has potential as a biocontrol agent to reduce post-harvest decay caused by C. acutatum in loquat fruit.  相似文献

The fruit characteristics and storage potential of some local and introduced mango cultivars grown in Trinidad were compared. At ambient temperature (28–32°C), fruit could be stored satisfactorily for between 3 and 8 days, after which ripening rapidly occurred. At 14°C, storage life was increased to as much as 18 days (cultivar ‘Graham’). Enclosure of fruits individually in polythene bags increased storage life at either ambient or 14°C temperature, while treatment with 3% Sta-fresh wax increased storage at ambient but not at 14°C. In the case of ‘Doodooth’, which was highly susceptible to anthracnose, treatment of fruit with hot water (52 ± 2°C) containing 500 or 1000 mg l?4 benomyl for 5 min reduced the incidence of disease. Results are discussed in relation to the export potential of mangoes.  相似文献

Summary

‘Manila’ mangoes were stored at 6 or 12°C, while a control lot was ripened at 258C. Polyphenoloxidase activity was measured in pulp and peel of mangoes during normal ripening and chilling-stress conditions. Compositional parameters (textural hardness, pH, acidity, and soluble solids) were monitored during ripening and chilling injury (CI) was assessed by visual inspection. PPO activity increased in refrigerated mangoes but fruit stored at 6°C displayed greater activity than those stored at 12°C. Both temperatures produced a peak in enzyme activity at day 16 of storage. Peel browning and acidity correlated with PPO activity (r.=.0.9073 and 0.9818) at 6°C. After the PPO peak was observed at day 16, refrigerated mangoes showed lower enzyme activities; however external browning became more pronounced.  相似文献

研究了广东龙眼采后炭疽病(Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz.)发生情况和果皮上炭疽病菌潜伏侵染率以及对龙眼贮藏效果的影响。结果表明:广东龙眼采收后在常温(28℃)下贮藏,3~4d后开始表现炭疽病症状,6d后炭疽病发生率为89.7%,8d后炭疽病发生率为99.3%。龙眼从幼果期开始受到炭疽病菌的潜伏侵染,随着果实的生长果皮上炭疽病菌的潜伏侵染率不断上升,到采收时达到90%。炭疽病菌潜伏侵染率高的龙眼果实采后变褐腐烂快,贮藏效果差。采收时龙眼果皮上炭疽病菌潜伏侵染率越低,采收后贮藏效果越好。在龙眼果实生长期间喷雾3次杀菌剂可显著地降低果皮上炭疽病菌潜伏侵染率,减轻龙眼采收后炭疽病发生程度,提高龙眼贮藏效果。  相似文献

A new disorder known as fruit pitting has been observed in some Indian mango orchards during the recent years. In this disorder, there is a development of some sunken pits on fruit peel, which distract consumers. Based on preliminary observations, it was observed that deficiency of nutrients could be the cause, and hence systematic studies were conducted in five indigenous cultivars such as ‘Alphonso’, ‘Amrapali’, ‘Dashehari’, ‘Mallika’ and ‘Neelum’, and five exotic mango cultivars such as ‘Edward’, ‘Irwin’, ‘Rosari’, ‘Sensation’ and ‘Tommy Atkins’ with the aim to observe the fruit pitting incidence and degree, and to investigate its probable causes. Our studies indicated that nearly 13% of the mango fruit was affected by fruit pitting with variable degree and magnitude. All indigenous cultivars had higher incidence of fruit pitting than exotic cultivars. ‘Dashehari’ had the maximum incidence of fruit pitting (30.3%), followed by ‘Amrapali’ (28.6%), and ‘Rosari’ the least (3.4%). Our studies indicated that the incidence of fruit pitting in mangoes was nearly 13% with a significant variability among the cultivars (Table 1). Although the concentrations of most of the major nutrients such as N, P, K, Mg, and minor nutrients such as Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, did not differ significantly. However, the pitted fruit had lower Ca (1.53%) and B (22 mg kg−1) concentrations than normal fruit (2.47% and 38 mg kg−1, respectively), indicating that deficiency of Ca and B probably is the cause for fruit pitting in mangoes.  相似文献

Summary

Changes in electrolyte leakage were assessed on the skin, outer and inner mesocarp of hot-water treated mangoes at the end of 2, 5, 10 d during storage at 4, 9, and 138C respectively. Batches of fruit were subjected to hot-water treatments at the following time-temperature combinations: (1) untreated; (2) 36.58 for 75 min; (3) 36.58C for 60 min stepped up to 46.58C for 43 min, or 46.5C for 90 min (same heat units), and (4) 36.58C for 75 min plus 46.58C for 61 min or 46.58C for 120 min (same heat units). The time-temperature combinations were designed to ensure that the fruits received heat units equivalent to about 0, 1/2, 1 or 11/3 of (468C for 90 min). Electrolyte leakage in fruit tissue was significantly highest in inner tissue and lowest in the fruit skin. The leakage increased in all fruit parts over time and with rise in storage temperature. Significant changes in electrolyte leakage were observed only in fruits stored at 138C. The skin of mangoes immersed in hot water at 46.58C for 120 min showed significantly higher electrolyte leakage compared with control and phased hot-water treatment (368C for 60 min + 46.58C for 43 min). Phased hot-water treatments showed lower electrolyte leakage compared with constant (one-stage) hot-water treatments and control. Fruits that received heat equivalent to 1 or 11 Ï /3 of 46.58C for 90 min through phased hot water showed lower leakage compared with constant hot water immersion at the same heat units. Linear regression of natural logarithms of electrolyte leakage against calcium contents showed a strong negative correlation. Hot-water treatment at 46.58C for more than 60 min exacerbated the problem of fruit skin damage especially during storage at 138C.  相似文献

When the effects of pressure infiltrated (1.03 X 105 Pa, for 2 min) dilute acetic acid on the shelf-life of banana (Musa AAB ‘Embul’) were examined, a 0.2% acetic acid (pH 3) treatment showed a significantly low disease score. Of other acids at pH 3 (0.05% citric acid or 0.1% ascorbic acid), tested separately, citric acid significantly reduced disease incidence. A 0.12% benomyl (as ‘Benlate’) dip was the most effective. A three-factor combination of citric acid, acetic acid and `Benlate’, all at half strength showed the lowest disease score. The results indicate that ‘Benlate’ application could be reduced by half when applied concurrently with both citric acid and acetic acid. Firmness was higher in bananas treated with any one of the three acids and the effect was significant using citric acid and acetic acid. Ethylene ripening did not negate this firmness increase. Peel pH was only slightly lower in the acid treated bananas. Anthracnose lesions caused by Colletotrichum musae inoculated into fruits 24.h after treatment, were fewer when given the three-factor combination described above, indicating that postharvest acid treatment may increase fruit resistance to anthracnose, and the direct effect of acids on the pathogen is not the main cause of reducing disease. The mango (Mangifera indica L.) is native to South and Southeast Asia, from where it has been distributed worldwide to become one of the most cultivated fruits in the tropics. It is the national fruit of India. In India, harvest and sale of mangoes take place during March-May and the fruits have high economic value in India. Studies were first time conducted on mango fruits to observe the severity of fruit cracking incidence. The stone was exposed in case of longitudinal type cracking and never exposed in star type cracking. The longitudinal cracking was 3.8, 3.4 and 1.7 % and star type cracking was 0.3, 1.8 and 0.02 % during 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. The lesser pulp thickness and higher stone weight in fruit cracked samples may have responsible for fruit cracking. There was a close relationship between fruit cracking and 3 months average weather conditions. The maximum temperature had positive relation with total fruit cracking.  相似文献

A series of active biodegradable coatings based on chitosan, gelatin, starch, and sorbitol with or without monoterpenes (geraniol and thymol) were prepared and applied on fresh strawberry fruit as postharvest treatments. The coated fruits were inoculated with fungal spores of Botrytis cinerea and stored for 7 days at 4 °C. Decay incidence, weight loss, anthocyanins, total soluble solids (TSS), total soluble phenolics (TSP), polygalacturonase (PGase), pectin-lyase (PLase), antioxidant activity, guaiacol peroxidase (G-POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and catalase (CAT) were elucidated in the fruits of experimental sets and they were compared with that of controls. The coatings showed a significant effect on the development of quality variables, with the additional effect of geraniol and thymol as a function of the polysaccharide matrix. The coatings inhibited decay incidence, reduced weight loss, delayed changes in the contents of anthocyanin, TSS, and total soluble phenolics; inhibited the increase in G-POD and PPO activities; and retarded the reduction in CAT activity. Compared to the controls, all of the coatings had positive effects on the inhibition of cell wall degrading enzymes (PGase and PLase) and among all the tested coatings, T5, chitosan (1%) + starch (1%) + sorbitol (0.5%) + tween (0.05%) + thymol (0.02%) was the best. This formulation showed also the highest antimicrobial activity and the greatest effect on other physiochemical parameters and it can be suggested to use it as a useful coating agent for extending the shelf-life and maintaining quality of strawberry fruit.  相似文献

Summary

Corky tissue (CT) is a major disorder affecting the fruit of sapota (Manilkara achras) ‘Cricket Ball’ in India. Affected fruit have a hard lump in the pulp and dry acidic flesh, but have no external symptoms. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the role of seed in the disorder. Treating fruit with 1.0 g l–1 gibberellic acid (GA3) at 50% maturity increased fruit fresh weight and presumably seed growth, and reduced the incidence of CT compared with that in untreated control fruit. In contrast, fruit treated with 3.0 g l–1 paclobutrazol (PBZ) showed the opposite response. Fruit treated at 70% or 90% maturity gave no response, suggesting that poor seed viability during the early stage of fruit development was associated with CT. Seed stored for 30 d under ambient conditions lost water and had lower viability. There were decreases in the moisture content and calcium concentration in seed and pulp as the severity of CT increased in fruit harvested in the field, indicating a “reverse flow” of water and nutrients from the fruit. It is proposed that the incidence of CT is related to reduced seed viability and the consequent losses of water and calcium from fruit due to competition for resources with the rest of the tree. Further studies are required to assess the potential of the application of GA3 to reduce the incidence of CT in commercial orchards.  相似文献

Fruits of European plum (Prunus domestica L.) show high rates of transpiration. Consequently, they are highly perishable fruit. In the present study, the potential of an edible coating (Versasheen®-based with sorbitol as plasticizer) to improve storage life and keeping quality was evaluated on fruit of the plum cultivars ‘Jojo’ and ‘Tophit plus’. Plums were picked at commercial harvest date and stored at 2?±?0.5?°C (90?±?2% rh) for up to 28?d plus 2?d at 20?°C to simulate shelf life. Every seventh day, plums were analysed for transpiration, colour changes and laser light backscattering imaging (LLBI) at a wavelength of 785?nm to non-destructively investigate variations in quality properties of plums. Finally, fruit flesh firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity were determined destructively. Results indicated that coating of fruit of both cultivars increased their surface resistance against water vapour transfer resulting in lower transpiration rates and thus lower mass losses compared to controls. Consequently, coating of fruit considerably delayed the decrease in flesh firmness. Moreover, edible coating retarded the increase of FWHM785 in coated plums. In this context, FWHM785 proved as a rapid and non-destructive tool to monitor changes in mechanical properties in heavily coloured plums. Results highlight that edible coatings successfully extend post-harvest life of plums.  相似文献

Summary

The effects of light, moderate, or heavy thinning (5, 10, or 20 cm between fruit, respectively), conducted before (7 d or 15 d), during, or after (7 d or 15 d) pit hardening (PH), on the incidence of split pits, fruit yield, fruit quality characteristics, and leaf mineral contents, were studied in the canning peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch.) cultivar ‘Andross’ over two growing seasons. The percentage of fruit with split pits increased by 58.2% in heavily-thinned trees compared with moderately- or lightly-thinned trees, and by 22.9% for the earliest time of thinning (15 d before PH) compared with thinning during, or after PH. Fruit fresh weight (FW) was greater in moderately- and heavily-thinned trees compared with lightly-thinned trees, but yields were similar among the different crop-load treatments. The latest time of thinning (15 d after PH) also had a negative impact on yield at first harvest and on total yield, fruit FW, and delayed fruit ripening compared to thinning during, and 15 d before PH. Total anti-oxidant capacities and phenolic contents were usually greater in fruit from heavily-thinned compared with lightly- or moderately-thinned trees only when thinning was conducted during, or 15 d after PH. Moreover, anti-oxidant levels were highest in fruit from the earliest-thinned trees. There was no significant effect of crop load, or of time of thinning application treatment on fruit colour, or on the K, P, Fe, Mn, and Cu contents of leaf tissues. In conclusion, light or moderate thinning during PH resulted in minimal split pits during processing, and in optimal yields and fruit quality characteristics in the canning peach cultivar ‘Andross’.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to investigate how harvest maturity influence fruit ripening processes to alleviate chilling injury (CI) in mangoes (cv. Tommy Atkins). Fruit at three stages of maturity, immature (M1), half-mature (M2) and mature (M3) were stored for 18 days at 5 °C and then at 1 or 3 days at 20 °C. M1 fruit succumbed to CI after 18 days at 5 °C, with symptoms increasing in severity upon warming. Low C2H4 production, poor colour development, minor changes to fruit composition, insipid flavour and poor aroma revealed that fruit ripening was insufficient to reduce CI compared to M2 and M3 fruits. M2 and M3 fruits had higher C2H4 production rates than M1 fruit and ripened normally with acceptable flavour and aroma after 18 days at 5 °C and 3 days at 20 °C. While M3 fruit had no CI symptoms, they were overripe and fruit decay incidence was 26.6%, compared to M2 fruit which had no decay, a trace of CI symptoms and possessed the best overall quality.  相似文献

Bitter pit incidence in Bramley apples that were cooled prior to either slow (three weeks) or rapid (one day) establishment of controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions (9% CO2, 12% O2) was 14.7 and 3.2% respectively. Bruise susceptibility was also reduced by rapid CA establishment although the rate of fruit softening was unaffected. The control of bitter pit by pre-storage treatment with 15–25% CO2 for one to three weeks was no better than by rapid establishment of CA, although bruise susceptibility was further reduced by some treatments. Some pre-storage treatments caused injury to the apple skin and flesh (brownheart). The extent to which fruits were injured was dependent on CO2 concentration and the duration of CO2 treatment. There was some evidence that early picked fruit not cooled prior to CO2 treatment was more severely injured both internally and externally by CO2 than that harvested later and cooled prior to treatment.  相似文献

Abstract

1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), an ethylene action inhibitor, was applied to ‘d’Anjou' pears (Pyrus communis L.) at 20°C between 2 and 5 days after harvest. Scald of ‘d’Anjou' pears was completely controlled by 1-MCP at a concentration between 0.05 and 0.3 µl l1 after a prolonged cold storage plus 7 days of exposure to an environment with or without 500 µl l1 ethylene at a temperature of 20°C or 25°C. 1-MCP inhibited the biosyntheses of α-farnesene and its oxidative products (conjugated trienes) and thus controlled scald. However, fruit treated with the above concentrations of 1-MCP did not ripen normally in an environment with or without ethylene. Ethylene production and fruit softening of 1-MCP-treated ‘d’Anjou' pears were inhibited during 7 and 15 days at 20°C. ‘d’Anjou' fruit treated with 0.01 and 0.02 µl l1 1-MCP ripened normally on day 7 at 20°C after 3 months of cold storage at ? 1°C, and ripened fruit did not develop any incidence of scald. Untreated fruit developed substantial scald. After 4 months of storage or longer, both untreated fruit and fruit treated with 0.01 and 0.02 µl l 1 1-MCP developed an unacceptable incidence of scald upon ripening. Thus, use of other scald control methods may be necessary in addition to treatment with a low dosage of 1-MCP to insure both normal ripening and scald control for d'Anjou pear fruit from the Mid-Columbia district.  相似文献

Alphonso mangoes picked at any stage of maturity (starting from fruit-set) and stored at room temperature show typical respiratory changes characteristic of a fully matured mango. Fruits picked during the earlier and later stages of development show respiration climacteric within 6–10 days. During the middle stages of development the preclimacteric trough continues to extend and the climacteric occurs after 10 days. Fully mature, tree-ripe mangoes do not show a respiratory climacteric during post-harvest storage.

Chemical constituents, such as titratable acids, apparent ascorbic acid, carbohydrates and carotenoids, estimated both at harvest and in ripe fruits from different pickings show changes similar to those characteristic of a fully matured ripening fruit.

Possibilities of reducing losses from pre-harvest fruit drop and post-harvest decay by resorting to early harvesting are discussed.  相似文献

Summary

Losses of apple fruit due to sunburn damage under South African climatic conditions can reach up to 40% per annum for specific cultivars in certain years. Various approaches to reduce the incidence and severity of sunburn resulted in temporary effects but, at present, no single remedy is available to provide a significant and consistent reduction in sunburn damage on a commercial scale. ‘Golden Delicious’ apple trees that received both calcium (Ca) and boron (B) as foliar applications on a weekly basis, when applied from approx. 21 – 70 d after full bloom (DAFB), showed significantly less sunburn in two consecutive seasons (P = 0.0500 and P = 0.0247 respectively) than untreated control fruit, or treatments based on Ca alone. The minerals were applied as supplements of sugar-alcohol complexed with Ca and B, trading as Manni-Plex® Ca [10% (w/w) Ca] and Manni-Plex® B [3.3% (w/w) B], respectively. The mode of action by which the incidence of sunburn was reduced using combined sprays of Manni-Plex® Ca plus Manni-Plex® B remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

Ker fruit harvested at three stages (immature, semi-mature and fully-mature) were subjected to different processing treatment viz., blanching and curing. Then the fruit were sun dried and stored for six months to study their quality. Fruit harvested at an immature stage (20.d after fruit set) and blanched for 3 min followed by curing in salt (5%) for the first 6.d and salt 10% + buttermilk 25% for the next 6.d proved significantly superior in terms of better rehydration ratio, ascorbic acid content and organoleptic quality.  相似文献
