Trials in southern Tasmania examined the thinning effects of ethephon on ‘Gala’ and ‘Jonagold’ apples. Untreated controls were compared with ethephon thinning sprays applied at full bloom at 50,100,200,400,800 and 1 600 mg I“1 to both cultivars. Thinning of both cultivars was related to the concentration of the spray and in most cases logistic models were fitted. Thinning effectiveness was largely reflected in increased fruit weight and size. The ‘Gala’ fruit was still not large enough for Australian markets. Ethephon at 200 mg I“1 effectively thinned ‘Jonagold’ and produced the required increases in fruit size and weight. ‘Jonagold’ was overthinned by the high concentrations of ethephon, but this was not reflected in increased fruit weight and size. Ethephon also reduced vegetative growth at the higher concentrations which was considered an advantage. More work is required to establish specific recommendations for either cultivar. 相似文献

SummaryThe present work investigated the effects of different aqueous extracts of organic waste compounds on growth, proliferation and photosynthetic activity in ‘M9’ (Malus domestica Borkh.) shoot cultures, with the aim of determining the feasibility of using in vitro cultures as a tool for the rapid evaluation of organic amendments in agriculture. Aqueous extracts of the following organic waste compounds: cow manure (CM), sugarbeet industrial waste (SB), mixed grape, poultry and municipal solid waste (GPM), and citrus pruning and industrial waste (CPI) were prepared at a rate of 1:10 (w/v) compound:distilled water. The basal media used in the proliferation phase were: (i) PM1, modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) enriched with 4.4 µM 6-benzyladenine (BA); (ii) PM2, as PM1 but with a reduced cytokinin concentration (1 µM BA) to evaluate possible hormone effects; and (iii) PM3, 4.4 µM BA with reduced salt strength (0.33 MS) to induce nutrient deficiency. Hormone-free medium with half-strength MS salts was used for rooting. All media were enriched with each extract at 0, 0.2, 2, 20 or 200 ml l–1. Photosynthetic activity was measured on PM3 medium enriched with SB or CM. Standard culture conditions were 22° ± 2°C, with a 16 h photoperiod at 30 µmoles photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) m–2 s–1, but at 80 µmoles PAR m–2 s–1 to determine photosynthetic activity. Shoot weight increase in PM1 was not affected by the GPM and CPI extracts, while the growth trends of CM- and SB-treated shoots were described by a second-degree function with maxima at 2 ml l–1 and 0.2 ml l–1, respectively. Shoot proliferation for SB was represented by a quadratic curve (maximum at 2 ml l–1), was linearly reduced as GPM increased, but was not affected by CM or CPI. Treatments did not significantly affect rooting percentage and root length; however root number was increased by SB at 2 ml l–1.CO2 fixation increased linearly with both SB and CM, despite reduced growth at the highest levels of extract. 相似文献

Analysis of S-alleles by PCR for determination of compatibility in the ‘Red Delicious’ apple orchard
Doron Schneider Raphaels Stern Dan Eisikowitch 《The Journal of Horticultural Science and Biotechnology》2013,88(5):596-600
SummaryIn a previous study, the apple ‘Jonathan’ was shown to be semi-compatible with the ‘Topred’ sport of ‘Red Delicious’, the main cultivar in Israel. This incompatibility led to reduced pollination potency, explaining the low yield obtained from ‘Topred’ rows adjacent to ‘Jonathan’. Hence, the importance of identifying the level of compatibility for all ‘Topred’ pollinators became apparent. By analysing S-allele by PCR with primers for the various S-alleles of the cultivars in the ‘Topred’ orchard, including S10 and S28, which were cloned in this study, it was evident that apart from ‘Jonathan’, the common pollinators for ‘Topred’ are fully compatible with it. The ability to identify all S-alleles in the ‘Topred’ orchard was also utilized to resolve the observation that, although ‘Topred’ is considered self-incompatible, self-pollinated, net-caged, ‘Topred’ flowers set some fruit. Applying PCR-analysis of S-alleles to the progeny of the suspected self-pollinated ‘Topred’ fruit revealed that the fruit-set was the outcome of cross-pollination, perhaps the consequence of fertilization by wind carried pollen. Hence, the notion that ‘Topred’ is totally self-incompatible was confirmed and the efficiency of progeny PCR S-allele analysis for the determination of the pollen donor was exhibited. 相似文献

A trial on ‘Fuji’ apples at the Grove Research Station in southern Tasmania during the 1991/92 season studied the thinning effect and interactions between ethephon and benzyladenine (BA) when BA was applied as a secondary thinner after a full bloom (FB) application of ethephon. The spray treatments were a factorial combination of eight application times of BA (11,13,15,17,19, 21, 23 or 25 days after full bloom (AFB)) with ten concentrations (20,40,60,80,100,120,140,160,180 or 200 mg I“1). An unsprayed control and an ethephon control were included. Target thinning results were achieved 19- 23 d AFB with concentrations of 140-160 mg I“1. A corollary of this successful thinning was an increase in fruit weight and size. Return bloom was improved significantly where thinning was successful. There was no effect on fruit firmness, soluble solids or lateral branching. Drawbacks were an increase in the incidence of russet and a reduction in pip number at the optimum thinning times and concentrations. 相似文献

Summary‘Red Delicious’, the main apple cultivar grown in Israel, and ‘Jonathan’, grown on a smaller scale, are prone to substantial pre-harvest drop. Spraying both cultivars with the synthetic auxin 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl-oxyacetic acid (3,5,6-TPA) reduced pre-harvest fruit drop and increased yield. Application of 40 mg l–1 3,5,6-TPA 2 weeks before anticipated harvest (WBH), or 30 mg l–1 3,5,6-TPA at 4 and 2 WBH gave the best results, and were as effective as 2,4,5-trichloro-phenoxypropionic acid (2,4,5-TP) which was the commercial product commonly in use until being withdrawn. There were no negative effects on fruit quality at harvest, or during 8 months of storage. Therefore 3,5,6-TPA can be recommended for routine use on ‘Red Delicious’ and ‘Jonathan’ apples in Israel. 相似文献

Two plant types [direct planted, cold-stored dormant crowns (crowns) or dormant crowns grown in a greenhouse for 3 weeks prior to field planting (plugs)] of ‘Albion’ strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) were evaluated in off-season field production under LD (long day: natural daylength supplemented with 24 h incandescent radiation) or ND (natural daylength) in New Jersey, USA. After 1 week under LD or ND plants received either 100 or 800 ppm N for 4 weeks. Inflorescence, runner, and branch crown production were monitored and fruit harvested from July through September. Field conditioning was ineffective for enhancing total yield of June-planted ‘Albion’ in off-season production. If early summer planting is anticipated, conditioning is not needed. Growing plugs in the greenhouse before transplanting to the production field is not beneficial and reduces productivity with the early summer plantings. Extending the daylength with continuous incandescent lighting to mimic LD during production is not recommended for early summer planting as productivity and fruit size are reduced under continuous low level lighting. 相似文献

SUMMARYYoung coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) fruit collected 6–8 months after anthesis (MAA) contain a high volume of water [20% (w/w)] and can provide a refreshing drink. The present study investigated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as aroma components, and physico-chemical changes in the liquid endosperm of young ‘Nam Hom’ coconut at two stages of maturity: the one-layer stage (6 MAA) and the two-layer stage (7.0–7.5 MAA) of the flesh. The liquid endosperm of coconut fruit becomes sweeter and more turbid late during maturation. Lauric acid (C12:0) and myristic acid (C14:0) were the main free fatty acids in the liquid endosperm of coconut. Short-chain fatty acid (C10–C12) concentrations increased slightly, and longer-chain fatty acid (C14–C18) concentrations declined when fruit matured from the one- to the two-layer stage of flesh. Solvent extractions showed a 1.4-fold increase in the total concentration of VOCs in the liquid endosperm during fruit development. This was related to a major increase in squalene and sterols, to 21.7% (w/w) of the total VOC and non-volatile organic compounds, whereas the concentrations of terpenes and esters remained stable. Although a series of alkanes existed in the liquid endosperm of coconut, the main aroma components were 2-methyl-1-butyl acetate and terpenes such as D-limonene, α-pinene, and 3-carene. We conclude that, when coconut fruit developed from the one- to the two-layered flesh stage, the liquid endosperm not only became sweeter and contained higher concentrations of aroma volatile and non-volatile components, but also became oily and less translucent. 相似文献

Soil and leaf samples were analysed in an attempt to identify the causes of leaf-tip scorch commonly observed in cultivated Protea sussannae and Protea eximia hybrid ‘Sylvia’. Leaf-tip scorch was hypothesised to be caused by nutritional problems. Soil and leaf mineral contents were measured and compared between healthy plants and those suffering from leaf-tip scorch. Leaf-tip scorch was found to be associated with increase electrical conductivity, total cation concentration and the concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Mn and B in the soil. It was concluded that failed attempts of growers to remedy the problem by foliar spraying of micronutrients might have artificially increased the levels of Mn and B. Leaf-tip scorch was associated with decreased foliar concentrations of Fe and increased concentrations of Na and Mn. No association between leaf-tip scorch and either ∂13C or ∂15N was found. It was concluded that changes in water relations and N acquisition were not associated with the symptoms. The significant decrease in the Ca concentration in the tips of leaves showing advanced leaf-tip necrosis indicated that a deficiency of Ca in the leaf tips may have been the proximal cause of the pathology. Ca deficiency in the leaf tips may in turn be caused by high soil EC. 相似文献

Hybrid breeding of Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujube) is limited by embryo abortion. Improving the success of embryogenic progeny and immature embryo culture techniques could increase the breeding efficiency of new jujube varieties. We optimised the current immature embryo culture techniques by using immature embryos before the globular stage of Chinese jujube variety Lengbaiyu. The optimal growth media were as follows: for 30-day-old immature embryo growth, MS + IBA 0.8 mg·L?1 + ZT 0.5 mg·L?1 + GA3 7.0 mg·L?1 + NAA 0.2 mg·L?1 + LH 0.5 mg·L?1 + 5% sucrose, with 22.22% embryonic growth rate and 0.41% plantlet formation rate; and for young embryo differentiation, MS + TDZ (0.8 mg·L?1) + IAA (0.5 mg·L?1) + sucrose (3%), with 81.12% differentiation rate. Thus, regeneration via callus induction effectively improved the efficiency of embryo rescue from young immature embryos in Lengbaiyu, which might provide new approaches for breeding Chinese jujube. 相似文献

SummarySpurs of ‘Nijisseiki’ pear (Pyrus pyriflora Nakai) were allowed to assimilate 10033;CO2 at 87.d after anthesis (DAA) and at 108 DAA during the period of rapid fruit growth. Then the spurs were sampled periodically until fruit harvest time to trace the time course and amount of movement of assimilates from spur leaves to individual organs in the spur. The amount of 10033;C absorbed by fruit within 3.d after labelling was constant until harvest, regardless of the labelling date. However, the total amount of 10033;C in the spur decreased continually until harvest.Of the total amount of 10033;C recovered in the spur labelled at 87 DAA, by harvest, 43.2% of 13C was found in the fruit flesh (cortex of receptacle), 5% in the core (pith of receptacle 1 pericarp 1 seeds), 5.6% in spur stem, 5.4% in the source leaves, and 40.8% was respired and exported from the spur. Of total amount of initial 10033;C labelled at 108 DAA, at harvest, the proportion of 10033;C translocated to flesh, core, stem, respired, and remaining in leaves was 61%, 6.1%, 3.0%, 24% and 5.4%, respectively. Photosynthates fixed by the spur early in the rapid growth stage of the fruit contribute more to the formation of starch and structural materials and less to solublecarbohydrates in fruit than do those fixed later. 相似文献

Three physiologically distinct forms of the same genotype of Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’, all derived from adult budwood, were identified following the growth of severely-pruned hedge plants grafted onto juvenile seedling rootstocks. Only explants from the form displaying the juvenile-like characteristic of over-winter leaf retention were capable of establishing sustainable cultures in vitro, although growth was not as rapid as those from a two year old seedling source. Pruning to release correlative inhibition of buds low on the scion framework produced vigorous shoot growth, but explants from these failed to show sustained growth in vitro. Withholding light from stockplants reduced excessive phenolic oxidation in explants taken from flushing unripe shoots, however, despite a beneficial effect on culture initiation, later growth was dependent upon the juvenile- or adult-like physiology of the original explant. A new medium was devised for this subject, which in addition to promoting growth generally, also stimulated the flushing of shoot apices. The relevance to in vitro culture of expression of juvenile habit in the stockplant is discussed. 相似文献

SummaryOrchards displaying calcium (Ca) deficiency are a common phenomenon worldwide, despite the presence of sufficient Ca in the soil and the plant. A 3-year trial was conducted between the 2007 – 2008 and 2009 – 2010 growing seasons to evaluate the contributions of soil and foliar Ca applications to Ca concentrations in ‘Braeburn’ apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) fruit. Ca(NO3)2 (Calflo; Yara Africa, Fourways North, South Africa) was applied as six separate foliar sprays until run-off. Applications were made at 1-week intervals between approx. 21 – 70 d after full bloom (DAFB) at 6.75 ml l–1. Soil applications of Ca (TropicoteTM; International ASA, Oslo, Norway) at 300 kg ha–1 were applied at fruit set, or after harvest, according to standard practice. Mineral analysis was conducted to assess the soluble Ca concentrations of whole fruit (without pips and stalks), to quantify the contribution of foliar sprays or soil-applied Ca. Fruit Ca concentrations were maintained at satisfactory levels (4.5 mg Ca 100 g–1 FW) at harvest by applying a series of six foliar sprays early in the season (for all seasons) during the trial period. Fruit Ca concentrations at 80 DAFB were highest in the treatments with foliar applications of Ca. In 2009 – 2010, Ca concentrations in apple fruit were lowest (8.38 mg 100 g–1 FW) for soil application of Ca at fruit set. Ca applications to soil after harvest in the previous season, and soil applications shortly after fruit set in the current season, did not significantly increase Ca concentrations in current-season fruit, providing soil Ca levels were above the minimum requirement for apple trees. A possible explanation is that apple trees regulate their uptake of Ca through the roots when soil Ca is available in sufficient quantities. This confirms the importance of active root growth for efficient Ca uptake by apple trees when applying Ca to the soil. 相似文献

SummaryA field experiment was conducted on mango (Mangifera indica L.) to study the effects of farmyard manure (FYM) on soil organic carbon (SOC) content and on the build-up of fertility over three growing seasons (2006–2007, 2007–2008, and 2008–2009) at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India. Five treatments, including the application of FYM at 5.0 kg plant–1, 7.5 kg plant–1, or 10.0 kg plant–1, the recommended dose of a chemical fertiliser (RDF; N:P:K=75:20:60), and a non-fertilised control, were evaluated in a randomised block design. The results indicated that SOC contents increased significantly in the FYM-treated plots. The highest SOC density (554 g m–2) and stock (5.55 Mg ha–1) were recorded in the treatment with FYM at 10 kg plant–1. The rate of increase in SOC density was highest (193 g m–2 year–1) with FYM at 10 kg plant–1, and lowest in the untreated control (15 g m–2 year–1). Regular addition of FYM had a positive effect on the build-up of soil fertility. However, the greatest increases in soil N, P, K contents were in the 7.5 kg plant–1 FYM treatment (means = 319.9, 19.1, and 270.8 kg ha–1 for N, P, K, respectively). Farmyard manure significantly influenced the growth parameters of mango trees over the three seasons. There was a positive and linear relationship between increasing rates of application of FYM and trunk cross-sectional area. 相似文献

Cultural services of the landscape contribute to a higher quality of life. The provision of these services differs along the urban–rural gradient, as does their appreciation by local residents. This paper investigates residents’ preferences for cultural services along the urban–rural gradient through a map-based survey in and around the Dutch city of Maastricht. We focus on the importance of location in explaining these preferences, distinguishing the location of residents (relative to the preferred landscape units) and the location of landscape units (relative to their positions on the urban–rural gradient). The study shows that residents prefer nearby locations for all distinguished cultural services. Locations’ valuation along the urban–rural gradient, however, differs by service type: for cultural heritage locations near the city centre are preferred, while outdoor recreation and sports and passive enjoyment of green landscapes are enjoyed more in rural areas. When considering the spatial distribution of the land-use types that provide these services, we further find that people prefer green areas closer to the city for outdoor recreation and sports and passive enjoyment of green landscapes. The results illustrate the heterogeneity of people’s preferences for cultural services along the urban–rural gradient beyond the distance from their residences. We recommend policy makers to take the urban–rural gradient into account when valuating landscape units, and in particularly the importance of green landscape units close to the city for different cultural services. 相似文献

SummaryPolyploid plantlets, including triploid, tetraploid, and mixoploid, were induced from the European pear (Pyrus communis L.) cultivar ‘Fertility’ by in vitro colchicine treatment of leaf explants. The leaf explants were incubated in 0.4% (w/v) colchicine for 24, 48, or 72 h, then transferred to adventitious shoot-induction medium. Regenerated shoots were pre-selected according to their morphological characteristics when compared to control shoots from untreated shoot proliferation cultures. Shoots with putative polyploid morphological characteristics were maintained and proliferated. The ploidy levels of all putative polyploid individuals were analysed by flow cytometry and identified by chromosome counts of shoot tip tissue squashes. Polyploid shoots were rooted, and the resulting plantlets were transferred to the field. Polyploid plantlets had a higher specific leaf mass and larger stomata than those of diploid plantlets. 相似文献

In this study, a new chlorophyll measurement tool, the delta absorbance (DA) meter, was used to develop an optimal harvest maturity model for ‘Ambrosia’ apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) fruit. Fruit from four commercial orchards in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada, were sampled (25 fruit from three or four trees per location) over nine consecutive weekly harvests during the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons, and 8 weeks in the 2013 season. At each harvest, five fruit from each orchard site had their index of absorbance difference (IAD) values, firmness, mass, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids content (SSC), red skin colouration and internal core ethylene concentrations measured. Following approx. 3 months of storage at 3.5°C, 20 fruit from each site were removed and assessed for the incidence of disorders such as senescent breakdown, cortical browning and coreflush. Chlorophyll concentrations in the epidermis were strongly and positively related to IAD values in the same tissue (P ≤ 0.001), confirming the assumption that chlorophyll was the basis for the DA meter IAD signal. In addition, IAD values declined significantly during fruit maturity and were negatively related to harvest week (P ≤ 0.001). The optimum harvest period was identified by aligning all ‘at harvest’ IAD values, fruit quality measurements, and ‘post-storage’ disorder data with the corresponding harvest week. IAD values associated with harvests having the highest commercial fruit quality then delineated the optimal harvest boundaries. The upper boundary IAD value of 0.47 was defined as ‘when to begin harvest’, while the lower boundary IAD value of 0.28 was considered to be ‘when to end harvest’ for long-term storage. The use of a DA meter and its IAD value to define the optimal harvest boundaries may be applicable to all commercial apple cultivars, but should be developed for each cultivar and growing region. 相似文献

Leaf mineral composition as affected by different rootstocks, cultivars, training systems and their combinations was measured during 1987 and 1988. Trees on M.7 had significantly higher concentrations of N, P and Fe, whereas those on MM. 106 maintained higher values of K, Ca, Mg and Mn during both years. Between cultivars, Red ‘Delicious’ showed greater accumulation of N, P, Mg and Fe but K and Cu levels were found to be more in Starking ‘Delicious’. All mineral nutrients except Ca and Mg accumulated more in spindle-bush trained trees than those under modified central leader system. The Mineral composition of Starking ‘Delicious’ grafted on M.7 rootstock and trained as a spindle bush produced the best yield efficiency and fruit quality, and fell within the normal range. 相似文献

A trial at the Grove Research Station, southern Tasmania in 1989-90 examined the thinning of mature ‘Golden Delicious’ apple trees. High-volume sprays were applied at 6,0001 ha-1 as air blast or vertical boom using NAA at 10mg l-1 4d after full bloom (AFB) and 18 d AFB. Carbaryl at 1,000 mg l-1 and thiram at 1200 mg l-1 were also applied as combined sprays, 30 and 38 d AFB. These high-volume sprays were compared with unsprayed controls and Micron and Micronair low volume sprayers at 200 and 1,1000 l ha-1. The dosages of the low volume applications were equilibrated to apply the same rates of chemical per hectare as the high-volume sprays, and the timing was the same. All spray treatments reduced crop load to acceptable levels when compared with the overcropped controls. There were no consistent differences between treatments for number of fruit per cm2 limb area except that the lowest volume Micron spray thinned significantly less than most other treatments. Considering the number of fruit per 100 blossom clusters the airblast spray was the only treatment to be significantly better than the Micron at 2001 ha-1. These numbers were reflected in mean fruit weight with the control fruit being significantly lighter than any sprayed fruit. The air blast treatment produced significantly heavier fruit than all other treatments, apart from the other high volume treatment. Fruit size distribution (FSD) showed significant differences between the control and all the spray treatments. The airblast treatment produced significantly more fruit in the 80 mm or larger category than all treatments, apart from the vertical boom application. These preliminary results suggest that although low-volume sprays can thin apple trees, the use of ultra low volumes (ULV) should be explored using machines capable of controlled droplet application (CDA). This may ultimately lead to less chemical being applied per hectare. 相似文献
