Summary Potato tuber glycoalkaloid content was measured in response to nitrogen fertilizer rate, storage temperature, length of storage period and cultivar. Cvs Gemchip, Norchip and Russet Burbank were grown with applied nitrogen fertilizer rates of 0, 168 or 336 kg/ha and then stored at either 4.4 or 10°C. Total glycoalkaloid content was determined one month before harvest, at harvest, after three months of storage and after nine months of storage. Higher rates of nitrogen, higher storage temperature and a period of storage all resulted in significantly (P<0.05) higher concentration of glycoalkaloids. The cv Norchip had higher glycoalkaloids than cvs Gemchip or Russet Burbank. Only the storage period had more influence than the environment (difference between years). Significant (P<0.05) two-way interactions were detected for year x cultivar, year x nitrogen, storage period x cultivar and nitrogen x cultivar. Most interactions were due to the unique responses of cultivars.  相似文献

The relationship between chip color, dry matter, sucrose, reducing sugars, ascorbic acid, protein, and storage temperature of commercially grown and stored Russet Burbank, Norchip, and Kennebec potatoes was investigated. Multiple correlation analysis of data, collected over a period of three years, demonstrated that while dry matter, reducing sugars, sucrose, and tuber weight were significant in determining chip color of freshly harvested potatoes, reducing sugars, tuber temperature, and sucrose were important in determining chip color of stored tubers. The relative importance of each parameter varied with the age of the tubers, year in which the potatoes were grown and stored, and cultivar. The multiple correlation coefficient among chip color, dry matter, sucrose, reducing sugars, and tuber weight was 0.901 for fresh Russet Burbank, 0.839 for fresh Norchip, 0.909 for fresh Kennebec, and 0.790 for the three cultivars combined. Similarly, the multiple correlation coefficient among chip color, reducing sugars, sucrose, and tuber temperature was 0.866 for stored Russet Burbank, 0.731 for stored Norchip, 0.914 for stored Kennebec and 0.790 for the combined stored material. Regression equations varied from cultivar to cultivar and from one season to another. This indicates that the quantitative relationship between the factors assayed was not sufficiently stable to serve as a general measure of prediction.  相似文献

Trials were conducted in Alberta with Norchip, Norland, and Russet Burbank and in Ontario with Kennebec, Russet Burbank, Norchip, and Superior tubers to determine their response to short-term exposure to air temperatures of 0, ?1, and ?5 C and to long-term exposure to ?1, 0, 1,2, and 3 C. Exposure of seed tubers to ?1 C from 6 hours to 5 days did not affect growth characteristics or tuber yield of any of the five cultivars studied. Long-term (October–May) exposure to ?1 C in one study severely reduced emergence and tuber yield of Norchip (P<0.05). While the marketable yield of Russet Burbank was also reduced (P<0.05) by this treatment, Norland was not affected. Tubers of all cultivars exposed to air temperatures of ?3 or ?5 C for longer than 24 hours were severely injured and were not planted in the field trials at either location. In Alberta exposure of seed tubers of Norchip, Norland, and Russet Burbank to ?5 C for 6 and 12 hours caused a reduction (not significant) in yield. In Ontario, long-term storage at 1, 2, and 3 C and in combination with short-term (2 weeks) exposure to 0 or 10 C had no effect on growth or marketable yield of Norchip, Russet Burbank, Superior, and Kennebec seed tubers.  相似文献

Cultivars were harvested biweekly for yield, weekly for sucrose determinations, and stored for chipping. At the last harvest Crystal was highest in total and marketable yield. Specific gravity was higher in Lemhi, Russet Burbank, and Norchip than in Kennebec, Crystal and Dakchip. Storage tests showed Norchip had superior chipping color to other cultivars. Dakchip had better color after short rather than after long-term storage, while the opposite was true for Kennebec and Russet Burbank. Lemhi and Crystal were marginal in color throughout storage. Sucrose (mg sucrose/g fresh tuber) expressed as a sucrose rating (SR) ranged from 1.2 to 11.9 among the various cultivars and harvest dates. Correlation between SR’s and tuber size within cultivars ranged from ?.91 to ?.97. Variability in sucrose content of immature tubers explained 70% of the variability in chip color among cultivars after storage from four to six months. Sucrose levels may be used to predict relative chipping quality of various cultivars after moderate to long-term storage if measured during early tuber development when differences in sucrose concentration are greatest among cultivars.  相似文献

Yellow-fleshed potatoes, Yukon Gold, Red Gold, Sag-maw Gold, Augsberg Gold, and AO82283.1 were compared to white-fleshed cultivars, Russet Burbank and Norchip, in relation to flesh color and sugar content during long-term storage. Yellow-fleshed cultivars had higher hue angles (h°) and chroma values (C*) compared to the white-fleshed potatoes. These values were consistently higher at all storage temperatures. Chroma values were maximum for most yellow-fleshed tubers when stored at 8.3 C for 84 days. As expected, lower concentrations of sucrose, glucose, and fructose were observed in tubers stored at 10 C compared to those stored at 3.3 and 8.3 C. After storage at either 3.3 or 8.3 C, Saginaw Gold, Augs-berg Gold, and AO82283.1 accumulated lower amounts of glucose or fructose compared to Norchip, Russet Burbank, Yukon Gold, and Red Gold. Although the yellow-fleshed clones accumulated up to 7.4 mg/g glucose or fructose when stored at 3.3 C, Saginaw Gold and Augsberg Gold responded well to reconditioning.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted in Alberta and Ontario with Norchip, Norland, Russet Burbank, Sangre and Superior potato cultivars to determine response to short-term exposure of seed tubers to below freezing temperatures in the fall. Exposure of the dormant seed tubers to ?-1 C for up to 48 hours did not affect the yield or growth characteristics of the cultivars. However exposure of seed tubers to ?-5 C temperatures for 6 or 12 hours caused marked (P < 0.05) reductions in marketable yield, marketable tuber number, maturity and vine size. Exposure to ?-5 C for periods longer than 12 hours resulted in severe freezing damage and subsequent decay of most of the tubers.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in 1995, 1996, and 1997 at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Harrington Research Farm to assess the effect of whole seed tuber size and pre-plant seed storage conditions on processing yield (> 51 mm dia.) of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv Russet Burbank). Following commercial storage, seed tubers were stored at 4.4 C then subjected to one of three pre-plant treatments: (1) planted directly from storage, (2) held at 10 C for 3 wk before planting, or (3) green-sprouted for 3 wk before planting. Five sizes of whole seed were used (28, 42, 56, 70, and 84 g) with a variable size cut seed treatment added for comparison. Plots were harvested 138,134, and 131 days after planting in 1995, 1996, and 1997, respectively. Cut seed produced a higher yield of tubers > 51 mm diameter in comparison to all whole tuber seed sizes, with the exception of the 28 and 56 g sizes. In terms of total yield, the 28and 42-g whole seed tubers yielded significantly less than all other seed sizes examined. Warming or greensprouting seed tubers prior to planting did not increase tuber yield. The larger whole seed tuber sizes tended to result in greater numbers of stems and tubers per plant. To maximize marketable yield of Russet Burbank planted from whole seed tubers, it is recommended that the seed be between 28 and 42 g in size. Accepted for publication 25 May 2004.  相似文献

The hill to hill variation in tuber yield and mainstem number was studied on 18 potato farms. There were up to 14-fold differences in the tuber yield per hill among plants of Norland, Russet Burbank, Norchip, Carlton and Alaska Red. The mainstem number was more variable than tuber weight per hill in Norland, Russet Burbank and Alaska Red. However, the opposite was true in Norchip and Carlton. In nearly all comparisons, the number of tubers per hill was less variable than tuber weight and mainstem number per hill. The total variation in tuber weight found in about 50% of the samples could be explained by the variance of hills within rows. Even in samples where an added variance component due to differences among rows was present, relatively more variation occurred within than among rows. The correlation coefficients between the number of mainstems and tuber weight per hill were positive but significant (P&< 0.05) only in Norland and Norchip. The correlation coefficients between the number of mainstems and number of tubers per hill were also positive but slightly higher and significant (P<0.01) in all 5 cultivars. The coefficient of determination values indicated that variation in cut seed piece weight explained only about 10% of the total variation in tuber weight harvested per hill. At a spacing of 30 cm within the row, a major proportion of hill to hill variation in tuber yield had to be explained by factors other than the seed piece weight.  相似文献

Pomerelle Russet is an early maturing fresh potato variety, which produces moderately high early-season (95–110 days after planting) yields of long tubers with brown-russet skin. It is notable for its very attractive, smooth tubers and resistances to internal and external defects with a high percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. Fresh merit ratings for Pomerelle Russet in trials conducted in Idaho, Oregon and Washington were consistently higher than Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah. Early harvest yields for Pomerelle Russet are generally comparable to Russet Norkotah with a higher percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. Compared to Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah, Pomerelle Russet has greater resistance to Potato mop-top virus, soft rot, corky ringspot and tuber infections from late blight. It also has higher protein and vitamin C concentrations than Ranger Russet, Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah, indicating that it can provide an enhanced level of dietary protein and vitamin C relative to these standard potato varieties. Pomerelle Russet has moderate specific gravity and good resistance to sugar ends. It also has moderately long dormancy, about 30 days shorter than Russet Burbank. Average post-harvest processing ratings for Pomerelle Russet were similar to Ranger Russet and greater than Russet Burbank. Pomerelle Russet also has maintained acceptable fry color for about 180–200 days in storage at 8.9 °C, indicating potential for processing out of mid-term storage, with improved fry color uniformity relative to industry standards. However, its primary use appears to be as a high quality, early fresh variety.  相似文献

Payette Russet is a full season, russet-skinned potato cultivar notable for its cold-sweetening resistance and associated low acrylamide formation, making it ideally suited for processing into French fries and other potato products. Low asparagine and reducing sugar concentrations in Payette Russet tubers contribute to an 81 % reduction in acrylamide content in French fries relative to cultivars Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank following eight months storage at 9 °C. In three years of evaluations in the Western Regional Potato Variety Trials, average yield of Payette Russet was intermediate between Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank, but Payette Russet had the highest U.S. No. 1 yield when averaged across all eight trial locations. Acceptably low tuber glucose concentrations (<0.10 % glucose FWB) were maintained in Payette Russet following up to nine months storage at temperatures as low as 5.6 °C with consistently acceptable French fry color scores obtained (USDA value ≤2.0). Reducing sugars are also maintained uniformly throughout Payette Russet tubers, resulting in a low incidence of sugar ends and reduced mottling in French fries relative to standard processing cultivars. Long tuber dormancy also benefits long-term storage for processing. With its russet skin, Payette Russet could also be used for fresh-pack, and its assemblage of disease resistances makes it especially suitable for organic production, or for use by growers and companies seeking greater sustainability in their production. Payette Russet is resistant to foliar and tuber late blight, common scab, and has extreme resistance to PVY conferred by the presence of the Rysto resistance gene. Payette Russet also has a moderate level of resistance to Verticillium wilt, early blight, and corky ringspot. It is susceptible to Fusarium dry rot (F. sambucinum), therefore production and storage management guidelines are provided to minimize tuber infection. Payette Russet displays a low incidence of second growth and growth cracks, especially relative to Russet Burbank, and is intermediate between Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank for incidence of hollow heart/brown center. Blackspot bruise expression for Payette Russet is similar to Russet Burbank and reduced relative to Ranger Russet. Payette Russet was more susceptible to shatter bruise, internal brown spot, and tuber weight loss in storage relative to the industry standard cultivars. Payette Russet was released in 2015 by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and is a product of the Northwest (Tri-State) Potato Variety Development Program.  相似文献

Changes in ascorbic acid levels were followed in apical and basal portions of Russet Burbank and Kennebec tubers during growth and development. Influence of nitrogen fertilization during growth and short-term storage on ascorbic acid level of the tuber was also studied. Changes in ascorbic acid content during growth showed two distinct phases, the first phase being characterized by an increase in ascorbic acid content with growth and development of the tuber, followed by a second phase which showed a decrease in ascorbic acid content with increasing maturity. The shift from the first phase to the second phase occurred earlier for Kennebec than for Russet Burbank. Increased nitrogen fertilization resulted in a delay of this shift from the first to the second phase. The apical portion of the tuber consistently showed higher ascorbic acid content than the basal portion. Kennebec tubers were higher in vitamin C content than tubers of Russet Burbank cultivar. High nitrogen fertilization resulted in less ascorbic acid content during growth. Storage of tubers for four weeks at 5.5°C also resulted in a marked decrease in ascorbic acid content of tubers. Nitrogen fertilizer rate during growth had no influence on the decrease in ascorbic acid content of tubers in storage.  相似文献

The cultivars Atlantic, Belchip, Denali, Monona, Norchip and Russet Burbank were harvested at weekly intervals from early August to early October in 1980–81 and analyzed for the following attributes: 1) sucrose rating (SR) (mg sucrose/g fresh tuber) 2) specific gravity (Sp.G.); 3) total yield and 4) chip color. At the final harvest, samples of each cultivar were stored and analyzed for color to determine chipping ability after storage. All varieties achieved a SR below 1.0 by 145 days of growth. Higher nitrogen levels reduced the total yield for early harvests but had no significant effect for later harvests. Changes in sucrose levels as tubers matured were helpful in evaluating the chemical maturity of more recently developed cultivars in relation to established chipping varieties.  相似文献

During growth of Russet Burbank tubers from less than 100 to over 250 g, thickness of parenchyma cell walls nearly doubled (1.9X) to slightly over 1 μ. Although affecting cell size at harvest maturity, different levels of N fertilizer and soil moisture had little influence on wall thickness. Wall thickness in Kennebec and Norchip increased to 0.9μ (1.7X), and in White Rose to slightly under 0.8 (1.2X). During the same growth, cell size nearly doubled in Russet Burbank. Cells of Kennebec, Norchip and White Rose averaged smaller than those of Russet Burbank at harvest maturity. Wall thickness and cell size showed similar relationships in foreign cultivars. Wall thickness in European varieties Bintje and Pimpernel was comparable to that of White Rose. Thickness in Atjimba closely approached that of Russet Burbank, and in Kamarz was similar to that of Norchip. Among South American cultivars, Doré had unusually thick walls (1.36μ), whereas those in Fruitella and Papa Bianca were between those of Norchip and White Rose. Bintje was comparable to domestic cultivars in tuber size, but all other foreign cultivars studied had medium to small tubers. Doré had unusually large cells for a small tuber. Differences in wall thickness may be due to differences in amounts of cell wall material, to differences in hydration properties of pectic components, or to combinations of both. Independently of wall thickness, the many primary pit fields in parenchyma walls may be a limiting factor in wall strength. The very thin pit membranes consist mainly of cellulosic microfibrils formed early in cell growth.  相似文献

Millennium Russet is a medium-late variety with long tubers having light russet skin and white flesh. It has potential as a fresh market and processing (french fries) variety. The tuber type of Millennium Russet is similar to Russet Burbank, but with better external and internal quality. The marketable yield, tuber set, and specific gravity are higher than Russet Burbank. Tubers show good fry color when processed from cold storage (7.2 C). Millennium Russet has a bland flavor and is less mealy and discolored than Russet Burbank. Chemical maturity of Millennium Russet occurs at approximately the same time as Russet Burbank, but it has lower sucrose levels in the bud and stem end. The glucose levels of Millennium Russet were 50% less than Russet Burbank throughout the first 4 months of storage at 10 C. Low glucose levels in the stem end of Millennium Russet when processed out of storage suggest tolerance to stress and low vulnerability to sugar end. Millennium Russet is resistant to common scab and corky ring spot, moderately resistant to dry rot, pink rot, and black scurf, and moderately susceptible to Verticillium wilt, bacterial wilt and brown rot. Millennium Russet is more sensitive to blackspot bruise than Russet Burbank, but more resistant to shatter bruise. Tuber yield of Millennium Russet was less responsive to nitrogen rates when compared with Russet Burbank, but tuber size distribution was more responsive to increases in in-row spacing.  相似文献

Solids content and amylose/amylopectin ratios were determined in different parts of tubers of White Rose, Red La Soda, Kennebec, Russet Burbank, Norchip and Lenape at harvest, after storage at 7 C for 2 and 4 mo, and after reconditioning at 20 C for 3 wk following each storage period. In all cultivars, solids content was greatest in stem-end, lower in bud-end and lowest in core tissue. The relationships for distribution of solids among the different parts of the tubers was not changed by storage treatments in any of the cultivars. Amylose/amylopectin ratios were similar in all parts of the tuber. Both the solids content and amylose/amylopectin ratio were changed by storage, but not uniformly in all cultivars.  相似文献

Teton Russet is an early-maturing, medium-russeted, potato cultivar with high merit for both fresh-pack and processing. In early harvest trials in the Pacific Northwest, Teton Russet had total yields similar to Russet Norkotah, and higher than Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank. Marketable yield of Teton Russet in the early harvest trials was also comparable to or higher than Russet Norkotah in Washington and Oregon, and higher than Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank at these sites, as well as in Idaho. In full-season trials, while total yield of the earlier-maturing Teton Russet tended to be lower than Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank, marketable yield was generally higher than Russet Burbank across the majority of sites due to its higher percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. Teton Russet is suitable for processing, with acceptable fry color following up to 8 months of storage at 8.9 °C. Uniformity of fry color was also very consistent. Teton Russet has shown lower levels of the amino acid asparagine relative to Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank which may contribute to lower acrylamide levels in French fries and other processed potato products. Teton Russet is notable for having resistance to common scab (Streptomyces spp.) and Fusarium dry rot, and is moderately resistant to tuber net necrosis. Analyses have also shown Teton Russet to have significantly higher protein levels than Russet Norkotah, Ranger Russet, and Russet Burbank, as well as higher vitamin C content than Russet Norkotah and Russet Burbank. Teton Russet was released in 2011 by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and is a product of the Pacific Northwest Potato Variety (Tri-State) Development Program.  相似文献

Potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum) from genotypes differing in chemical susceptibility to the physiological disorder blackspot bruise (TXA 763-5, Atlantic, Ranger Russet, Russet Burbank, and Lemhi Russet) were stored for eight months at 3 C. Protein extracts from each cultivar were assayed for proteinase and chorismate mutase (CM) activities. During cold storage, three of five genotypes tested increased in their ability to develop melanintype pigments responsible for blackspot. Concurrent with this were increases in either endopeptidase, aminopeptidase, or CM activities or combinations of enzyme activities specific to genotypes. These increases in enzyme activity may be responsible for the increase in levels of the melanin precursor tyrosine, associated with cold storage of potato tubers.  相似文献

The incidence of tuber decay in rail car shipments of potatoes from the State of Washington was determined from 1965 to 1969 inclusive. Reinspection certificates revealed that 7.9% of the rail cars of potatoes shipped during this period were rejected due to tuber defects; tuber decay accounted for 63% of these rejected cars. Percentage of rejections due to tuber decay was greater for Russet Burbank than for Norgold Russet potatoes. Temperature, moisture, and oxygen levels influenced development of bacterial soft rot in freshly harvested potatoes and in potatoes stored for 3 months at 35 F (2 C) previous to treatment. When tuber surfaces were kept dry, no soft rot developed in 11 days over ranges of 50–70 F (10–21 C) and 2–20.5% oxygen levels. Freshly harvested tubers partially immersed in water did not rot when cooled to 40 F (4.4 C) in < 24 hours and held for 8 days under either 20.5 or 4% oxygen levels; however, tubers, rotted when stored similarly but at 50 F or higher temperatures. Partially immersed tubers incubated for 1 day or longer at 70 F developed soft rot in a low oxygen (4%) when later stored for, 8 days at 40 F. When rot occurred, the amount was always greater under lower oxygen levels irrespective of storage temperature. Of various cooling methods tested in rail cars loaded with 100 lb (45.4 kg) sacks of potatoes, prechilling of tubers and icing of cars prior to loading lowered floor temperatures most rapidly. Icing cars after loading lowered floor temperatures the slowest. In a carton shipment, the temperature remained above 68 F (20 C) in cartons after 8 days in transit, even though the wall and floor temperatures had cooled to near 55 F (12.8 C) by the second day. Oxygen level surrounding, tubers in the center of car loads of 100 lb sacks of potatoes was approximately 20.5% after 8 days transit.  相似文献

The source of raw potato tubers and the tubers’ duration of storage have a significant effect on color and texture of french fries. Controlling these variations is crucial to ensuring a consistent, high-quality end product. Russet Burbank and Shepody potatoes grown at two sites in Manitoba, Canada were stored for 9 and 11 months in 1994, and for 1 and 3 months in 1995, to determine the effects of short-term storage period, cultivar, and two tuber-growing locations on fry color and texture. French fry texture was measured by a puncture test, and peak force and peak deformation used as indices of textural quality. Large peak forces and deformations were assumed to be indicative of improved textural quality. Hunterlab L (lightness) value was used to determine fry color, higher values being associated with improved color quality. Fries processed from 11-month-old tubers had improved color and textural quality compared to those processed from 9-month-old tubers. Fries processed after 3 months tuber storage were darker in color but firmer in texture than fries processed from tubers after 1 month of storage. Differences in texture and color between the two cultivars were more evident with prolonged storage; fries processed from Russet Burbank potatoes were superior in texture and lighter in color than fries made from Shepody potatoes. With respect to site, fries processed from potatoes grown at Portage had better texture but darker color than those processed from Carberry potatoes. It was postulated that the calcium content of the soils may be responsible for both these results.  相似文献

The Green Mountain cultivar was used in field tests to determine the effects of inoculating potato plants at various times with the potato leafroll virus (PLRV) on development of internal necrosis of tuber tissue. Viruliferous apterae of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulz.), were placed on each stem in all hills to be inoculated in each 3.0 m single-row plot. Planting and inoculation dates were varied in all field experiments and, in one, several vine-killing dates were also included. All harvested tubers were stored for approximately four months at 10°C to enhance development of internal necrosis prior to examination. Similar but smaller greenhouse studies involving both apterous and alate green peach aphids were also conducted using Green Mountain, Irish Cobbler, and Russet Burbank cultivars. All results showed that as inoculation was delayed relative to plant development, more net necrosis (NN) occurred. Conversely, when plants were inoculated early, stem-end browning (SEB) rather than NN predominated. A high percentage of naturally occurring SEB tubers (cv. Russet Burbank) were found by ELISA to contain PLRV. Plants produced by these tubers only rarely developed leafroll symptoms. These findings suggest a previously unsuspected causal relationship between SEB and PLRV. Implications of this apparent relationship on the epidemiology of potato leafroll in Maine are discussed.  相似文献
