Modulation of physiological and biochemical defensive responses against downy mildew (DM) of pearl millet induced by raw cow milk (RCM) and five amino acids is reported in this paper. In vitro conditions, none of the inducer treatments showed inhibitory action on DM pathogen. Significant enhancement of seed germination and seedling vigor was observed in RCM and amino acids treated seeds. Under greenhouse conditions, significant protection against DM was provided by l-phenylalanine (68.6%), l-isoleucine (66.5%) and l-proline (55.7%) treatments. Among the RCM treatments, the 10% dilution proved to be the best by offering disease protection of 35%. Spatio-temporal time gap studies indicated that seed treatment with l-phenylalanine increased disease resistance four days after inoculation. Seed treatments with RCM and amino acids also enhanced the vegetative and reproductive growth parameters of pearl millet when compared to the control. A similar trend in protection against DM was evident in the field trials. At the biochemical level, defense related enzymes such as phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), peroxidase (POX) and β-1,3-glucanase showed an increased activity in RCM and amino acids treated seedlings than in sterile distilled water control seedlings. The highest PAL activity was recorded in RCM (10 and 20%) whereas in case of amino acids, the highest activity was observed in l-proline and l-phenylalanine treatments. The highest activity of β-1,3-glucanase was recorded in RCM (20%) and l-phenylalanine.  相似文献

Increasing awareness of drought tolerance in pearl millet [Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke.] has stimulated research into pearl millet as a potential U.S. crop. Objectives of this study were to compare yield and yield components of pearl millet and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and evaluate pearl millet response to a range of grain sorghum environments.Yield and yield component comparisons were made using 24 millet hybrids and six grain sorghum hybrids at seven Kansas locations, from 1980 to 1982. To compare pearl millet production in grain sorghum environments, millet hybrid mean yields were regressed on sorghum location means. A desirable millet hybrid would have a high yield and a regression coefficient not significantly different from 1.0.Average grain sorghum yields were greater than millet yields in all three years. Millet hybrid yields ranged from 350 to 5400 kg ha−1. Over all locations and years, millet yield averaged 63% of sorghum yield. In unfavorable environments, pearl millet yield and response to changing environments were not significantly different from those of grain sorghum. As environmental conditions improved, sorghum significantly yielded more than millet. Lower millet yields could be attributed to significantly smaller seed size and head sterility. The small seed also reduced plant establishment; however millet's tillering ability compensated for reduced population.  相似文献

In order to reduce pesticide use in vineyards, we propose a bioeconomic model to evaluate different fungicide treatment strategies. This model estimates the development of the downy mildew Plasmopara viticola for a given year's weather on a grapevine plot, and predicts the damage done, the yield loss, and the resulting partial gross margin, depending on the chosen protection strategy.Grapevine growth and phenology are simulated with the STICS grapevine crop model according to the year's weather; fungal components quantify downy mildew development; damage onto leaves and fruits is characterized as a percent reduction of potential leaf area and yield; the effect of fungicide treatments is simulated as a partial protection against infection; the economic result is calculated at plot level, taking into account simulated yield, local economic conditions and costs of observations and sprayings. The model parameters were estimated using three sets of experimental data from vineyards in the French wine-growing region of Bordeaux. Using these parameter values, the model was used to evaluate the following five protection strategies: 3 systematic fungicide spraying strategies with 2-, 3- or 4-week intervals, the “Mildium” adaptive strategy, which includes field observations and decision rules, and a control untreated strategy. Yield losses and the resulting partial gross margins were calculated for 23 annual weather examples for each strategy and the statistics of these strategies were compared. The adaptive strategy was found to be slightly less protective on average against downy mildew than the 2-week systematic spray strategy. However its low variability ensures sustainability in terms of grower's income, while reducing by one third the number of sprayings. The model hypotheses and simulation results are discussed, in relation to the particular economic context of the “Bordeaux” protected designation of origin with the objective of reducing pesticide use in vineyards.  相似文献

Whole grain flour of one variety (HC-4) of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum L. Leeke) after giving different treatments (defatting, butylated hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid and thermal) was stored in earthen pots at prevailing room temperature (28–34°C) and relative humidity (70–80%) for 30 days. The flour samples were evaluated for protein quality using rats. Storage of flour for 30 days markedly reduced the protein quality. The values of protein efficiency ratio, true digestibility, biological value, net protein retention and net protein utilisation were significantly (P<0.05) higher in fresh and treated flour than untreated flour. Among treated flours, defatted flour showed best growth followed by butylated hydroxyanisole, thermal and ascorbic acid treated flour.  相似文献

Potassium phosphite for control of downy mildew of soybean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Downy mildew of soybean, caused by Peronospora manshurica, is widely spread throughout Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of potassium phosphite to control this disease. Field experiments were conducted during the growing season of 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 in the state of Parana in southern Brazil. The experimental design consisted of completely randomized blocks in a factorial arrangement (4 × 2) with four replications. Four rates of potassium phosphite (0, 375, 750 and 1500 g P2O5 + K2O ha−1) were applied at two growth stages, V6 (fifth trifoliolate leaf) and R2 (full flowering), followed by one or two applications of pyraclostrobin and epoxiconazole (66.5 + 25 g a.i. ha−1) at R3 (pod development) or R2 and R5.1 (10% of pod filling), mainly for the control of Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) and powdery mildew (Microsphaera diffusa). Field experiments were conducted to quantify the severity of downy mildew on leaves, nutrient content in leaf tissue (N, P and K), leaf area index (LAI), yield and seed weight. The maximum severity of downy mildew was observed at a growth stage of R5.3 (50% of pods were ripe), with 14% and 46% of the leaf area affected in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008, respectively. Also it was detected some effect of phosphite on Asian rust control but it was mostly in the trial of 2007/08 when the epidemic was very low (9.7-21.8% of severity). There was a linear reduction in the severity of downy mildew and a significant improvement in the LAI with an increase in the rate of phosphite applied. During the 2006/2007 growing season, a significant yield improvement was observed due to the application of the highest rate of phosphite. Two fungicide applications following phosphite application significantly improved the control of Asian soybean rust and powdery mildew, yield and seed weight when compared to a single fungicide application.  相似文献

Market samples of pearl millet flour and bread from Saudi Arabia were analysed for chemical composition and nutritional quality. Pearl millet flour contained, on a dry weight basis, 17.4% protein, 6.3% fat, 2.8% fiber and 2.2% ash. Lysine was the most limiting essential amino acid with a chemical score of 53 (FAO/WHO, 1973). Linoleic acid (44.8%), oleic acid (23.2%) and palmitic acid (22.3%) were the dominant fatty acids in millet oil followed by stearic acid (4.0%) and linolenic acid (2.9%). The invitro protein digestibility (IVPD) of millet flour was 75.6% and the calculated protein efficiency ratio (C-PER) was 1.38 in comparison to ANRC casein values of 90% and 2.50, respectively. Baking at 300°C for 15 min had only little effect on the proximate and fatty acid composition of the bread but decreased the arginine, cystine and lysine contents by 31.3%, 15.8% and 13.8%, respectively. The IVPD was not affected but the C-PER decreased by 18% on baking.  相似文献

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is cultivated across a wide range of environments ranging from extremely stressful to favourable. The objective of this research was to compare methods to identify productive cultivars for stress and non-stress conditions. Thirty pearl millet cultivars were evaluated at 22 locations that were grouped as stress, non-stress, or intermediate environments. Five selection indices viz., arithmetic mean (AM), geometric mean (GM), AM (standard units), stress susceptibility index (S) and drought response index (DRI) were calculated for each genotype to determine correlation between selection indices and yield under stress (YS), non-stress (YNS), and average conditions (YAV). Both cultivars and locations were significant sources of variation. Phenology of cultivars had different influence on yielding ability in contrasting environments. While earliness was advantageous for stress conditions, cultivars with longer duration tended to yield more under non-stress conditions. YS was only moderately determined by YNS. Both AM and GM were suitable indices for selection of cultivars that would perform well across stress, non-stress, and intermediate environments. Stress susceptibility index (S) was negatively correlated with YS (r=−0.62**) but should only be used as a selection criterion in combination with yield under stress (YS) to identify cultivars adapted to stress environments. DRI was positively correlated with YS but had no association with YNS. Results indicated that DRI might be useful for identifying cultivars with high performance under stress particularly when days to flower differ considerably among test entries.  相似文献

The susceptibility of different varieties of Vitis vinifera and other Vitis species to downy mildew (caused by Plasmopara viticola) in field, greenhouse and laboratory tests was compared over a period of three years. Different degrees of susceptibility were detected. The most susceptible V. vinifera varieties were ‘Treixadura’ and ‘Albariño; ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, ‘Mencía’ and ‘Chasselas Doré’ were the least susceptible. The non-vinifera varieties showed no symptoms of downy mildew in the field. Surprisingly, in laboratory and greenhouse tests, the rootstock 110-R was much more susceptible to infection than S04. No relationship was seen between susceptibility and berry colour, or the time of sprouting or fruit ripening. Neither was any correlation seen between susceptibility and the condition of being a traditional or introduced variety. Better knowledge of the susceptibility to downy mildew of different varieties would allow for growers and breeders to select those that are more resistant.  相似文献

Basil downy mildew, caused by Peronospora belbahrii Thines sp. nov., is a devastating foliar disease of fresh-cut basil first discovered in the U.S. in South Florida in 2007. Since then the pathogen has been found in over 20 U.S. states and has become a major threat to sweet basil production. In this study, acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM, Actigard 50WG), DL-3-aminobutyric acid (BABA), isonicotinic acid (INA), salicylic acid (SA) and sodium salicylate (SS) were evaluated for their potential to control basil downy mildew in the greenhouse. Efficacy of these systemic acquired resistance (SAR) inducers varied in control of basil downy mildew depending on the rate, method and timing of application. Foliar sprays of ASM applied pre-, post- or pre- + post-inoculation at rates ranging from 25 to 400 mg l−1 significantly (P = 0.05) reduced disease severity compared to the non-treated control in all experiments. ASM sprayed at 50 mg l−1 three times on a weekly basis starting 3 and 7 days post- inoculation resulted in a 93.8 and 47.1% reduction in disease severity, respectively. Six weekly foliar sprays of BABA as pre- + post-inoculation at rates equal or higher than 125 mg l−1 significantly suppressed downy mildew compared to the non-treated control. Foliar treatments of ASM or BABA followed by one or two post-inoculation sprays of a mixture of potassium phosphite (Prophyt) and azoxystrobin (Quadris) significantly improved efficacy for disease control. Sporangia counted on ASM treated leaves were significantly lower than leaves sampled from the non-treated control. ASM and BABA at concentrations lower than 1.0 mM did not inhibit sporangial germination in vitro. The effect of INA, SA and SS on disease reduction was generally inconsistent and not significant compared to the non-treated control.  相似文献

Mixed culture fermentation of pearl millet flour withSaccharomyces diastaticus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactobacillus brevis andLactobacillus fermentum brought about an improvement in its biological utilisation in rats. Protein efficiency ratio, feed efficiency ratio, apparent protein digestibility, true protein digestibility, net protein utilisation, net protein retention, protein retention efficiency and utilisable protein values in case of pure culture fermented pearl millet four were higher than the control. Feeding of the fermented products did not bring about physiological, histopathological and haematological changes in rats.Chapaties and cutlets prepared from the fermented products were organoleptically acceptable.  相似文献

Agricultural intensification through the application of mineral fertilizers, the recycling of crop residues and animal manures and through plant breeding are the only means to increase food supply in the poverty ridden West African Sahel, where pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) is the dominant staple. Research on the effects of soil amendments on the quality of millet straw and grain is scarce, comparative studies of possible quality differences in traditional landraces versus improved varieties and hybrids are lacking. This paper reports results from 22 landrace populations, 22 improved varieties, six inbred×variety hybrids (IVHs, fertile inbred×open-pollinated varieties) and four topcross hybrids (TCHs, male-sterile line×open-pollinated varieties), whose grains were analyzed for protein concentration and amino acid composition, macro- and micronutrients (total and phytate P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu), metabolizable energy (ME), fat and β-carotene. At similar yield levels, landraces showed a 2.9 and 3.5% higher protein concentration compared with improved varieties and hybrids without a detrimental effect on protein quality as determined by the relative amount of lysine and threonine. Landrace populations also had the highest fat concentrations and the largest micronutrient densities. However, in-vitro digestibility and ME were (79.8% and 12.2 MJ kg−1 respectively) larger for both groups of hybrids. The concentration of β-carotene was (0.13 μmol kg−1) highest in the improved varieties, but appeared overall too low to significantly contribute to vitamin A nutrition in local diets. While the results of this genotype screening need to be verified in replicated multi-location trial studies, they underline the potential of including landraces in breeding programs to concurrently improve grain yield and grain quality in this area of the world.  相似文献

A forecaster of onion downy mildew, referred to as DOWNCAST, was evaluated under field conditions to determine its validity and effectiveness for timing fungicide sprays. DOWNCAST utilized criteria for predicting sporulation and infection by the downy mildew pathogen, Peronospora destructor. The criteria were based on quantitative and temporal relationships of temperature, rain, high humidity, rate of dew deposition and dew duration with the infection cycle of the pathogen. DOWNCAST correctly predicted sporulation incidence on 111 of 119 nights during two growing seasons. Refinement of a temperature criterion was needed to predict sporulation correctly on the remaining eight nights. Indirect evidence showed that DOWNCAST correctly predicted infection incidence. Sequences of weather conditions were used to predict ‘sporulation-infection periods’, when the pathogen sporulated, survived and infected the onions, and to identify infection cycles. Fungicide programmes of Ridomil-MZ, Sandofan M8, Bravosan, Vinicur M-SC, Manzate 200 or Bravo 500, begun on the sixth or eighth day of the first infection cycle, did not usually reduce sporulation incidence early in the second infection cycle. However, all of the programmes except Bravosan and Bravo effectively restored disease management a few days later. Programmes of Ridomil-MZ begun in the second infection cycle usually were less effective than those begun in the first cycle. Relative effectiveness of the various fungicide programmes was reflected in increased yield and size of the onions. It was concluded that fungicide programmes should start at about the time of the first sporulation-infection period.  相似文献

Downy mildew of field pea (Pisum sativum) caused by Peronospora viciae f. sp. pisi has become widespread in the main field pea production areas of central Alberta. Field experiments were conducted at naturally-infested field sites over several years to assess the effect of seeding depth, seeding date, seed treatment and foliar fungicides on downy mildew incidence and severity, and to estimate the relationship between severity and yield loss. Downy mildew was shown to cause substantial yield loss on field pea. Even a moderately severe infestation reduced pod numbers by 65% and seed yield by 75%. The loss (pod number or seed yield) was best explained by a linear model (y = −2.3114x + 10.086; R2 = 0.9441 and y = −2.5165x + 10.378; R2 = 0.9533, respectively). Depth of seeding (range 3–7 cm) did not affect downy mildew. Similarly, seeding date (early, mid and late May) did not have a consistent effect on disease levels. Late seeding occasionally reduced downy mildew, but always resulted in low seed yield. Several seed treatment fungicides reduced downy mildew, and metalaxyl-based products produced the highest yield. Several foliar-applied fungicides, including pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin and metalaxyl, reduced downy mildew severity, but the results were not consistent across years. We conclude that cultural practices may not be sufficient for effective management of downy mildew, and that metalaxyl-based fungicides applied as seed treatments or foliar sprays could represent the best control option until downy mildew resistant pea cultivars become available.  相似文献

Cereals including millets are consumed in India as a staple with wide variety of pulses and vegetables in varying proportions. Trace mineral contents of pearl millet are two to ten times higher than that of rice. Comparative performance of pearl millet based (PM) diets as against rice based (RB) diets in terms of trace mineral bioavailability was studied, based on the prevailing dietary patterns in India. In vitro percent dialysability of zinc, iron, copper and manganese under simulated gastrointestinal conditions was considered as indicator of metal bioavailability. Dialysable zinc and iron were estimated using 65 Zn and 59 Fe as tracers, while dialysable copper and manganese were measured by Atomic absorption spectrophotometer for 20 food items and 15 RB and 17 PM diets prepared from these items. Results indicated that percent dialysability of zinc and copper was higher for RB diets than PM diets, while that of iron and manganese were comparable. Total dialysable iron, copper and manganese in PM diet was 2 to 4 times higher than RB diet.  相似文献

Pearl millet grown at two different locations in the U.S.A., pearl millet A (PMA) and pearl millet B (PMB), were analyzed for chemical composition and nutrient content and compared to corn. The two samples of pearl millet and corn were incorporated into diets and fed to 24 growing pigs in a metabolism trial to determine nitrogen and mineral balance and digestibilities of energy, fat and amino acids. Pearl millet (PMA and PMB) was found to be richer in crude protein, gross energy, ether extract, acid detergent fiber, amino acid profile and mineral content than corn. However, digestibilities of dry matter (corn, 86·8%; PMA, 80·5%; PMB, 82·0%) and energy (corn, 85·3%; PMA, 78·8%; PMB, 80·5%) were higher (P<0·05) for corn than either of the pearl millet samples. Fat digestibility was much higher in pearl millet than corn. Although nitrogen intake and absorption were higher (P<0·05) for pearl millet, the digestibility of nitrogen was similar for pearl millet and corn. Net protein utilization was lower (P<0·05) in pearl millet when compared to corn (corn, 44·8%; PMA, 34·6%; PMB, 39·9%). Digestibilities of the essential amino acids, arginine, threonine, valine, isoleucine and lysine were higher in pearl millet than corn. Phosphorus retention, expressed as a percentage of intake and absorption, was higher in corn than pearl millet. Calcium intake and absorption were similar for pearl millet and corn. Intake and absorption of magnesium and managanese were also similar in pearl millet and corn. Zinc and copper retention, when expressed as a percentage of intake, were higher in corn, but absorption for both minerals was similar in corn and pearl millet. Pearl millet was found to supersede corn in nutrient content and amino acid digestibility.  相似文献

Drought is the primary constraint in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) production in the drier semi-arid and arid regions of south Asia and Africa. The traditional landraces from drier regions are good sources of drought adaptation but often lack high yield under near-optimum growing environments. The objective of this paper was to assess whether crosses between landrace populations and elite germplasm can produce hybrids with better grain yield under favourable conditions than landraces, without compromising grain yield under drought. The research evaluated 20 crosses and their nine parents (consisting of landrace-based populations and elite composites) under drought and non-drought conditions. Drought response index (DRI), based on flowering and grain yield measured in drought and non-drought environments, was used to assess drought tolerance. Landrace populations yielded significantly more grain under drought stress than elite composites and crosses and had the highest mean DRI (3.99). In contrast, composites showed maximum sensitivity to drought with significantly negative DRI (−3.64). Adaptation to either drought or high productivity conditions appeared to be associated with different plant types: higher panicle number, lower grain number per panicle, and smaller seed size were associated with drought adaptation; low tillering and greater number of large-sized seeds per panicle were favoured for optimum growing conditions. Crosses yielded significantly better than composites under drought, better than landrace populations under non-drought and had a wide range in drought sensitivity. Around 40% of crosses produced on average 23% higher grain yield than the best landrace under favourable conditions, without compromising grain yield under drought. The results illustrate that hybridization of landrace populations with elite composites can produce germplasm that combines drought tolerance of traditional material with high production potential of elite genetic material.  相似文献

Lipids in pearl millet meal showed a rapid hydrolytic decomposition during storage. The magnitude of such degradation was influenced significantly by the nature of the storage container used, the temperature and heat treatments given to the seeds. The hydrolytic breakdown of lipids was significantly low in the meals stored in polyethylene bags, plastic boxes and under refrigerated (5±2 °C) conditions. Hot water blanching at 98 °C for 10 sec and dry heating of seeds at 100 °C for 120 min were found to be most effective in minimising the undesirable changes in lipids of the meal during storage.  相似文献

During a five-year trial (2007–2011), the efficacy of azoxystrobin (Quadris, 250 g a.i. L−1, Syngenta) in two doses (187.5 g a.i. ha−1 and 250 g a.i. ha−1) and chlorothalonil (Bravo 720-SC, 720 g a.i. L−1, Syngenta) at a rate of 1.44 kg a.i. ha−1 was tested for the control of cucumber downy mildew (CDM). Cultivars that were susceptible or resistant to CDM (Regal and Haros, respectively) were tested for their response to fungicide applications. Differences in both disease severity and yield of the cultivars among resistance levels and fungicide treatments were observed. A highly significant and negative correlation was obtained between AUDPC and yield. Higher yields can be achieved by planting more resistant cultivars in combination with lower doses of fungicides. This is an indication that CDM contributes significantly to yield losses in cucumber production in Serbia. While monitoring the degradation of azoxystrobin residues, a decrease in residue levels to 1.0 mg kg−1 below the maximum residue level (MRL) was observed at the end of the pre-harvest interval (PHI).  相似文献
