Summary Heterosis and inbreeding depression for total fresh and dry weights were studied over two seasons in 15 crosses of six cultivars of forage rape (Brassica napus L.). Some of the hybrids exhibited considerable heterosis over both mid-parent and better parent; followed by depression in the F2. The cross Windal × Canard had 62% and 25% greater dry matter yield over the best cultivar used in this experiment in 1978 and 1979, respectively. Possibilities of the utilization of this hybrid superiority are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Yield components and yield were studied in F1 barley hybrids produced by hand pollination or male sterility. Grain number exhibited only partial dominance but grain weight showed dominance or overdominance and contributed to the heterotic situation particularly in 2×6-row crosses. For the commercial exploitation of heterosis it is essential that hybrids should be found which show greater dominance for high grain number.  相似文献

Summary Genotype-environment interactions in F1 hybrids between a selection of current commereial varicties as male parents and a balanced tertiary trisomic male-sterile female were investigated. Sixteen environments were employed, comprising eight treatments in each of two seasons. Hybrid stabilities in terms of yield response to changing environments, were found to be very similar to those of the parents, however hybrid yields exceeded parental yields in all but one instance. A heterotic effect for plant height was also observed.  相似文献

Summary F5 seeds from six highly heterotic F1 hybrids were produced to determine whether the superior performance of F1 hyrids could be fixed in pure-line derivatives of pea (Pisum sativum L.). For each cross, 24–31 F5 lines derived from single seed descent were compared with F1 hybrids and their parents in two environments. The F1 hybrids out-yielded the best parent by up to 11%. All crosses produced F5 lines which were as high in yield as the F1 hybrids indicating that pure-line derivatives equivalent in yield to the heterotic F1 hybrid could be developed by conventional breeding. Heterosis of the F1 hybrids over the best commercial cultivar was thus a useful indicator of the future performance of the pure-line derivatives. These results indicate that overdominance was not an important component of heterosis in peas.  相似文献

Summary Yield and yield components of F1 hybrids were studied in three experiments at 30×30 cm spacings and in one experiment at 15×15 cm spacings. In the 30×30 cm experiments, 10 of the 41 hybrids tested significantly outyielded their high parents. However, only 2 hybrids significantly outyielded the best cultivar: one hybrid yielded 23 % and the other 16 % more than their respective check cultivars. The four hybrids in the 15×15 cm experiment yielded only 59 to 92% as much as their high parents. In areas where rice is transplanted at relatively wide spacings, the observed levels of F1 heterosis in selected hybrids may be sufficient to warrant production of hybrid rice, if enough hybrid seed can be produced. For direct-seeding at the high rates normal in the USA, the relatively small levels of heterosis and the difficulties of hybrid seed production preclude use of F1 hybrid rice cultivars at present.None of 19 bulk F2 and F3 hybrids in two experiments yielded significantly more than its high parent. Similarly, none of the 12 mixtures included in one experiment yielded significantly more than its high parent. On the basis of yield alone, using bulk F2 or F3 or simple mixture populations is not merited.Contribution from the Western Region, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Agronomy and Range Science, University of California, Davis, California 95616.  相似文献

The phenomenon of mutant heterosis was studied in barley using F1 hybrids developed from crosses involving two mutants derived from the same parent variety (067AR× 032AR), or from crosses of mutants with their parent varieties (Diva × 228DV; 437MG × Mg 4170). The agronomic performance (plant height, tillers per plant, kernel number and weight per plant) of F1 hybrids was evaluated in relation to the corresponding parent variety used for mutant development. Wide-space sowing (0.O6 m2/plant) was applied to allow the full expression of hybrid vigour. The hybrids significantly exceeded their parent varieties in various yield parameters in each year of the experiment, Depending on the cross, the level of heterosis ranged from 39.45% to 82.1% for kernel number and from 44.45% to 91.2% for kernel weight, as an average of observations over three years. The increased yield of hybrids was accompanied by an increase in spikes/plant, without significant changes, in most cases, in yield components such as kernels/spike and 1000 kernel weight. The height of F1 plants remained similar to the corresponding parent variety. Doubled haploicls (DH) were developed through anther culture from three F1 hybrids to determine whether the heterotic effect could be fixed, even partly, in homozygous lines. Twenty-eight, 42 and 68 DH lines per cross were produced, and evaluated in the field, space-planted at 0.06 m2/plant, together with hybrids and parent varieties. The best-performing DH lines were evaluated again the following season in a conventional field trial. We were able to select 1.5 -14.3% of‘F1,-performing’DH lines per hetorotic cross combination, which, in two years of studies, reached the yield of heterotic hybrids and significantly out-yielded the parent variety in plot. The yield potential of DH lines was better expressed under a wide sowing density, but even under normal growing conditions, the yield of the best selected DH lines surpassed their corresponding parent varieties by 17.77ndash;30.1%.  相似文献

Summary Five parents from each of four race groups of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were hybridized to produce five crosses within each group. Also, five crosses were made for each of the six possible combinations among four groups. Parents, F1 and F2, and parents, F2 and F3 were evaluated for seed yield in 1990 and 1991, respecitively, at two locations in Colombia.Yield of parents belonging to Middle American races and crosses among them was higher than that of races of Andean origin. Positive correlations were found among the mid-parent value, F1, F2 and F3. Also, the mid-parent value predicted the mean seed yield of all possible lines that could be derived from the F-generation in 42 out of 47 crosses. Four crosses, all between common bean races of Andean and Middle American origin, indicated a possible loss of favorable epistatic parental alleles. On average, mean yield of interracial F1 hybrids was higher than that of intraracial ones.Positive heteroris (26.4%–123.8%) over the mid-parent in 31 crosses, and F1s yielding higher (23.7%–91.8%) than the high parent in 20 crosses and yielding higher (22.1%–53.2%) than the highest control among all parents (MAM 13) in 12 crosses, were found. Heritability, estimated by the parent-offspring regression, ranged from 0.42± 0.07 to 0.49±0.04. Expected and realized gains from selection (at 20% selection pressure) ranged from 10.3% to 21.0% over the mean of F1 hybrids and F2 and F3 population bulks.  相似文献

Hot pepper is the most important worldwide grown and consumed spice and vegetable crop. Though hybrid breeding has been proposed for genetic improvement in the crop, but there is lack of information on heterosis in crosses among crop genotypes in Ethiopia. Twelve genotypes (nine Asian and three Ethiopian parents) of hot pepper were crossed in 2003 cropping season in a half-diallel fashion to fit Griffing’s fixed effect model analysis. An open field experiment was conducted in 2004/2005 to investigate heterosis for fourteen traits in 66 F1 hybrids grown together with their 12 selfed parents. Highly significant genotypic differences were observed for all the traits except for leaf area. Variance component due to specific combining ability (dominance) were larger than that due to general combining ability (additive) for each of the studied traits with few exceptions. Broad sense heritability (H b2) for fruit traits were more than 60% and with wide gap from narrow sense heritability (h n2) for most of the important traits like number of fruit per plant (H b2 = 88.3% and h n2 = 46.0%), days to maturity (H b2 = 87.2% and h n2 = 23.1%) and dry fruit yield per plant (H b2 = 72.6% and h n2 = 14.6%). Maximum heterosis over mid-parent and better-parent, and economic superiority of hybrid over standard check were recorded, respectively for dry fruit yield per plant (163.8, 161.8 and 92.1%), number of fruits per plant (104.4, 79.6 and 136.4%) and days to maturity (−29.8, −31.5 and −23.6%). These observations suggested a possibility of utilizing dominance genetic potentiality available in diverse genotypes of the crop by heterosis breeding for improving hot pepper to the extent of better economic return compared to the current commercial cultivar under production in the country. Low narrow sense versus very high broad sense heritability for days to maturity and dry fruit yield per plant could be a sign for achievability of earliness and high fruit yield using heterosis in hot pepper. The maximum heterobeltiosis were recorded either from F1s obtained from Ethiopian and Asian crosses or from within Asian crosses, suggesting the possibility of maximizing heterosis by considering genetically diverse parental genotypes. The manifestation of highest heterosis in hybrids from among Asian lines indicated existence of genetic diversity among Asian genotypes and the potentiality for improvement of hot pepper using genotypes from different regions of the world along with elite inbred lines from local cultivars.  相似文献

Summary Genetics for speed of plumule emergence was studied using six generations (P1, P2, F1, BC1(P1), BC2(P2) and F2) in three crosses. Two of the crosses which had parents of different emergence speed were controlled by two genes with duplicate epistasis. The third cross which involved parents of little difference for speed, indicated incomplete dominance for one gene of bit fast parent over the slow one. In all the crosses F2 segregation pattern was confirmed by the segregation pattern of back crosses. The gene symbols were designated as Sp1Sp1 Sp2Sp2 for fast speed parents: sp1sp1 sp2sp2 for slow parent and sp1sp1 Sp2Sp2 for the parent with bit fastness for speed of plumule emergence.  相似文献

Approaches are needed to broaden the genetic base and improve earliness and yield potential of large-seeded beans under sustainable cropping systems. The objective of this research was to develop adapted dwarf bean populations having a commercial seed quality and yield suitable for the production in the South of Europe. The original base populations were produced from crosses between genotypes within each Mesoamerica, Nueva Granada and Peru races, and between Peru and Nueva Granada, and Mesoamerica and Nueva Granada races. Visual mass selection for plant performance was practised in the F2 and F3 generations. In the F4 and F5, single plants were harvested under two cropping systems (sole cropping and intercropping with maize). From F4, selection was based on precocity, combined with seed yield and seed commercial type. The F4:7 selected lines from each original population were compared with their parents and five checks at four environments and two cropping systems. Differences among environments, populations, parents and checks were observed for all traits. Under intercropping with maize, there was a 50% reduction in seed yield. Yield of parents and checks belonging to Andean South American races, intraracial (Nueva Granada × Nueva Granada) and interracial (Nueva Granada × Peru) populations, was higher than that of those of Middle American origin. Intraracial crosses within large-seeded Andean South American (Peru race) and Middle American gene pools (Mesoamerica race) did not produce lines yielding more than the highest yielding parent. Only two large-seeded lines selected from crosses between small- and large-seeded gene pools out-yielded the best parent and check cultivar.  相似文献

Tef is a staple cereal of Ethiopia in high demand by consumers. In order to cope up with this high consumer demand, productivity per unit of land must increase through the development and use of high-yielding varieties. To this effect, the National Tef Research Project has long been striving towards the development of high yielding varieties through direct selection from germplasm and concentrating favourable alleles through hybridization and selection, despite the tedious crossing technique. The objective of this study was to assess the degree of genetic variation in F2 populations of tef as a basis for improving grain yield. F2 populations from 12 crosses and their parents were grown at the Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Center, Ethiopia, and assessment was made on eight traits on individual plant basis. Eleven of the 12 crosses showed substantial genetic variation for grain yield and its components, indicating the potential for improvement through selection. Moreover, grain yield, plant weight and yield related traits showed moderate to high heritability values (17–80%). In all the crosses, tiller number, panicle weight, yield per panicle and panicle length showed significant (P ≤ 0.05) and positive association with grain yield. Considering the degree of genetic variation and heritability values, emphasis should be given to selected crosses in an effort to developing high-yielding tef varieties.  相似文献

Summary Yields of F1 hybrids averaged 22% more than the mean of their heavier-yielding inbred parents, and the advantage of hybrids over composite populations varied from 3 to 18%, more in winter than spring beans. From estimates of cost/benefit ratios that included the possibility of poor seedset on male steriles, on average 1 year in 10, it was concluded that hybrid seed might cost more than twice that of conventional varieties, but a 10% increase in yield on a 4t/ha crop would cover this extra cost of seed. Thus, hybrids could still be the more profitable type of variety provided seed rates are low and yield levels high. It is therefore still worthwhile to pursue the goal of stable cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and/or a control of the rate of increase in revertants. Some methods are suggested whereby it might be possible to reduce revertants, improve pollination or exploit heterosis other than with CMS.  相似文献

Summary The possibilities to transfer important traits and in particular resistance to the beet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii, abbrev. BCN) from Raphanus sativus to Brassica napus were investigated. For these studies B. napus, R. sativus, the bridging hybrid ×Brassicoraphanus (Raparadish) as well as offspring of the cross ×Brassicoraphanus (Raparadish) ×B. napus were used. Reciprocal crosses between B. napus and R. sativus were unsuccessful, also with the use of embryo rescue. Crosses between ×Brassicoraphanus as female parent and B. napus resulted in a large number of F1 hybrids, whereas the reciprocal cross yielded mainly matromorphic plants. BC1, BC2 and BC3 plants were obtained from backcrosses with B. napus, which was used as the male parent. F1 hybrids and BC plants showed a large variation for morphology and male and female fertility. Cuttings of some F1 and BC1 plants, obtained from crosses involving resistant plants of ×Brassicoraphanus, were found to possess a level of resistance similar to that of the resistant parent. These results and indications for meiotic pairing between chromosomes of genome R with those of the genomes A and/or C suggest that introgression of the BCN-resistance of Raphanus into B. napus may be achieved.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between the genetic distance of parents and both the heterosis of F1 hybrids and the variance of F5 lines was investigated in 72 crosses of pea (Pisum sativum L.). The genetic distance between each pair of parents was estimated, using isozyme (GDi), morphological (GDm) or quantitative (GDq) markers and finally a combination of isozyme and morphological markers (GDi+m). GDm was poorly correlated with the other measures of genetic distance, which in turn were strongly correlated with each other. Genetic distance was moderately correlated with the level of heterosis for yield over midparent in the F1 generation, with the highest correlation obtained from GDi+m. GD was not significantly correlated with heterosis for yield over the better or best parent but it was significantly correlated with all three measures of heterosis for pods per plant and hundred seed weight. There was no correlation between genetic distance and the level of heterosis for yield and total dry matter in the F2 generation, but GDi, GDi+m and GDq were predictive for the level of inbreeding depression in grain yield and total dry matter. When parents were high in genetic distance, crosses produced highly transgressive segregants for basal branches per plant, hundred seed weight, harvest index and onset of flowering. Genetic distance between parents was thus a useful measure for predicting a portion of hybrid performance and also of the variance of derived inbred lines. It was concluded that when choosing parents for a cross, consideration should be given to their genetic distance as well as their overall adaptation and their yield. There is considerable potential for optimising choice of parental combinations in the development of improved pea cultivars.  相似文献

Summary A number of reports have indicated differences in reciprocal families of Solanum tuberosum when intergroup hybrids were studied. Questions have been raised concerning the potential magnitude, frequency, and genetic basis for such differences. In this study, exact reciprocal crosses were made using parents characterized by different maturities and having different cytoplasmic sources within Solanum tuberosum in order to substantiate previous claims of reciprocal differences and to clarify the nature of such differences.Field trials revealed reciprocal differences which were large and highly significant. Reciprocal yield differences of up to 115% were observed when parents of opposite maturities were used. In seven crosses, the higher-yielding reciprocal always had the higher-yielding parent as the maternal parent. Significant reciprocal differences for flowering and vine maturity were also observed between some families. The F2 populations were generated for one set of reciprocals and the reciprocal differences in the F2 generation seemed to be substantially reduced relative to the F1 generation. It is concluded that the occurrence of large reciprocal differences seems to depend more upon having parents of opposite maturity than upon the taxonomic origin of the parent's cytoplasm. This, in conjunction with the reduced F2 reciprocal differences, suggests that observed differences may be due to very persistent maternal effects or a type of dauermodification, rather than true cytoplasmic inheritance.Cooperative Investigation of U.S. Department of Agriculture, Science and Education Administration. The F 1 and F 2 generations of a twenty parent fractional diallel cross of opium poppy (P. somniferum L.) were analyzed for combining ability for ten quantitative and five quality (alkaloids) traits. The results indicated significant differences among the parents for combining ability for all the traits. The GCA and SCA components of variances were significant for all the characters. However, the SCA component of variance (δ 2s) was predominant indicating the preponderance of non-additive gene effect for all the traits except for leaves/plant and papaverine in F1 hybrids. The average degree of dominance (δ 2s/δ 2g) was more than unity indicating over dominance and also confirming non-additive mode of gene action. Among the parents IS-16, IS-13 and NBRI-1 for early flowering, BR226 and BR241 for branches/plant, capsule weight/plant, seed yield/plant and husk yield/plant, BR227 for leaves/plant, UO1285 for capsule size and opium yield/plant, NBRI-5 for husk yield/plant, morphine, codeine, and thebaine and ‘Papline’ for plant height and papaverine content were found good general combiners. Parent ND1001 was good combiner for codeine and narcotine content. Inclusion of good general combiners in a multiple crossing program or an intermating population involving all the possible crosses among them subjected to bi-parental mating may be expected to offer maximum promise in breeding for higher opium, seed yield and alkaloid contents.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids from cross incompatible relatives of sweetpotato   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Hybrids were obtained from Ipomoea interspecific crosses through ovule culture. The hybridity of the progeny obtained from I. triloba × IitI. trifida and (I. triloba × I. lacunosa) × I. batatas (4x) crosses was established by comparisons of floral morphology and analyses of peroxidase and esterase isozymes. The hybrids displayed the inflorescence type and sepal shape and texture of their male parents, while corolla size and anther and nectary color tended to be intermediate to their parents. The isozyme banding patterns of the hybrids contained bands present in the patterns of each of their parents. Pollen grain viability, measured by aceto-carmine stainability, was 44.1%, 92.3% and 82.4%, respectively, for the I. triloba × I. trifida hybrid and the (I. triloba × I. lacunosa) × I. batatas (4x) hybrids, H1 and H2. A controlled pollination study revealed that the I. triloba × I. trifida, and the (I. triloba × I. lacunosa) × I. batatas (4x) hybrids, H1 and H2 were partially self fertile with 6%, 70% and 13%, respectively, of the pollinated flowers producing viable seed. Success in backcrossing and sib-mating varied with the cross combination.  相似文献

Two sets of tropical maize inbred lines, one derived from the BR-105 population and another derived from the BR-106 population, were assayed for Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism's (AFLP) and for Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR), in order to investigate genetic distances among lines and their relationship to heterotic group assignment and single cross yield performance. Genetic distances were on average greater for interpopulation than intrapopulation crosses for both AFLP and SSR. Cluster analysis was in agreement with the original assignment for heterotic groups. Inbred line 16, derived from BR-106, was assigned to the BR-105 set, in agreement with single cross yield performance from intra- and interpopulation crosses. However, the same pattern was not observed for SSR where another two lines from BR-106 were also assigned to the BR-105 set. Correlation coefficients of genetic distances (GD) with F1 grain yield and heterosis were high for BR-106 ×BR-106 crosses (0.91** and 0.82** for AFLP and SSR, respectively), moderate for BR-105 × BR-105 crosses (0.52* for AFLP and SSR) and low for BR-105 × BR-106 crosses (0.29 and 0.16 for AFLP and SSR, respectively). The lower correlation at interpopulation level was due to the smaller range of GD caused probably by a previous selection for combining ability. General results showed that the AFLP molecular marker is efficient in assigning maize lines to heterotic groups and that AFLP-based GD is suitable for predicting the maize single cross performance for intrapopulation crosses of broad-based populations. The efficiency of SSR in assigning lines to heterotic groups and for predicting single cross performance was smaller than AFLP. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Triticale is generally treated as a self‐pollinating crop and line breeding is practised. Hybrid breeding has been discussed for some time, but there is little information for winter triticale. This study investigated heterosis for eight agronomic traits in F1 and F2 hybrids grown together with their parents as drilled plots in three environments. On average, grain yield heterosis was 12.5 dt/ha (a relative 10.5%) compared with the mid‐parent value for F1 hybrids, and 6.2 dt/ha (5.0%) for F2 hybrids and withawide range of 4.4–17.1 dt/ha for F1 hybrids. A positive contribution to the heterosis of yield was made by kernels/spike and 1000‐kernel weight, whereas spikes/m2 showed negative heterosis. Hybrid plants in F1 and F2 were taller than mid‐parents (8.3 cm and 5.3 cm, respectively), with a tendency to earlier heading. The negative heterosis for falling number in F1 and F2 hybrids could be a problem for commercial production of triticale hybrids. By selecting parents for combining ability and the identification of heterotic patterns, grain yield heterosis of 20% appears feasible.  相似文献

Summary Two crosses between Glycine max (L.) Merr. and G. soja Sieb. & Zucc. parents were used to study the association between isozyme marker loci and agronomic and seed composition traits in soybean. The parents possessed different alleles at six isozyme loci for Cross 1 (A80-244036 × PI 326581) and at eight isozyme loci for Cross 2 (A81-157007 × PI 342618A). A total of 480 BC2F4:6 lines from the two crosses was evaluated for 13 traits in two environments. Lines were grouped in locus classes from 0 to 5 according to the number of loci homozygous for the G. soja alleles that they possessed. Within each locus class, each isozyme genotype was represented by five random lines.Selection for G. max alleles at the isozyme loci was not effective in recovering the recurrent parent phenotype in either cross. In cross 1, however, BC2F4-derived lines in the 0- or 1- locus class more closely resembled the G. max parent than lines in the 4- or 5- locus classes for most of the agronomic and seed composition traits evaluated. Significant associations were found between particular isozyme genotypes and every trait analyzed. The estimated effect of genes linked to the Pgm1 locus was a delay in maturity of 6.0±3.4 days. In cross 1, the Idh2 locus was associated with a significant effect on linolenic acid content. The percentage of variation accounted for by the models of estimation varied according to the heritability of the trait. The R2 was high (up to 78%) for maturity, lodging, and vining, and low (up to 21%) for seed yield. Most of the variation was associated with the BC2F1 family from which the lines were derived. There was little evidence that digenic epistasis was an important source of variation.Journal Paper No. J-13505 of the Iowa Agric. Home Econ. Exp. Stn., Ames, IA, Project 2475.  相似文献
