Thyroid status is compromised in a variety of acute and chronic infections. Conversion of thyroxine (T4) into the metabolically active hormone, triiodothyronine (T3), is catalyzed by 5′-deiodinase (5′D) mainly in extrathyroidal tissues. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of protozoan parasitic infection (Sarcocystis cruzi) on hepatic 5′D (type I) activity and plasma concentrations of T3 and T4 in placebo- or bovine GH (bGH)-injected calves. Holstein bull calves (127.5±2.0 kg BW) were assigned to control (C, ad libitum fed), infected (I, 250,000 S. cruzi sporocysts per os, ad libitum fed), and pair-fed (PF, non-infected, fed to intake of I treatment) groups placebo-injected, and three similar groups injected daily with pituitary-derived bGH (USDA-B-1, 0.1 mg/kg, i.m.) designated as CGH, IGH and PFGH. GH injections were initiated on day 20 post-infection (PI), 3–4 days prior to the onset of clinical signs of the acute phase response (APR), and were continued to day 56 PI at which time calves were euthanized for liver collection. Blood samples were collected on day 0, 28, and 55 PI. Alterations in nutritional intake did not affect type I 5′D in liver. Treatment with bGH increased (P<0.05) 5′D activity in C (24.6%) and PF (25.5%) but not in I calves. Compared to PF calves, infection with S. cruzi reduced 5′D activity 25% (P<0.05) and 47.8% (P<0.01) in placebo- and bGH-injected calves, respectively. Neither nutrition nor bGH treatment significantly affected plasma concentrations of T4 and T3 on day 28 and 55 PI. However, plasma thyroid hormones were reduced by infection. On day 28 PI, the average plasma concentrations of T3 and T4 were reduced in infected calves (I and IGH) 36.4% (P<0.01) and 29.4% (P<0.05), respectively, compared to pair-fed calves (PF and PFGH). On day 55 PI, plasma T3 still remained lower (23.7%, P<0.01 versus PF) in infected calves while plasma T4 returned to control values. The data suggest that parasitic infection in growing calves inhibits both thyroidal secretion and extrathyroidal T4 to T3 conversion during the APR. After recovery from the APR, thyroidal secretion returns to normal but basal and bGH-stimulated generation of T3 in liver remains impaired.  相似文献

Treatment of bovine calves 10-16 days old with an anthelmintic which is effective against immature Toxocara vitulorum killed the parasites, there was no new infection and recontamination of the environment was precluded. When the management of the program was delegated to the livestock officers, approximately 3% of calves scheduled for treatment developed patent infections. The prevalences of toxocarosis on the different farms were correlated with annual rainfall, probably because the longer dry periods associated with lower rainfall killed infective eggs in the environment. The treatment schedules prevailing before the study commenced were ineffective. The prevalence of toxocarosis in the bovine calves on farms in the area with an annual rainfall of about 1000 mm was lower than that in buffalo calves studied previously in the same area.  相似文献

In a two-year trial involving successive batches of 36 autumn-born steers on two adjacent sites in Hertfordshire, calves treated with ivermectin at three and eight weeks after turn out contaminated pastures much less than untreated control animals. Each year dry summers prevented the larval challenge on the control pastures from building up to high levels until about the time of autumn housing. Atypical outbreaks of parasitic gastroenteritis were recorded in May and June of the second year in both groups of control calves. Clinical and parasitological aspects of these outbreaks are discussed in the context of the epidemiology of the disease. It is concluded that the application of measures to control gastroenteritis can bring benefits in the early part of the grazing season as well as later in the year.  相似文献

The Strep-Zym identification system, a combination of 23 enzymatic tests, allowed a rapid biochemical characterization of Streptococcus uberis. The biochemical profiles of the S. uberis cultures clearly differed from those of S. agalactiae and S. dysgalactiae. Serological grouping of S. uberis revealed polysaccharide antigens of groups E, G, P and U. Some cultures of S. uberis demonstrated CAMP-like synergistic hemolytic activities on sheep blood agar and reacted specifically with the lectins of Helix pomatia and Dolichos biflorus. The occurrence of group polysaccharides, CAMP-like reactivities, and the lectin agglutination reactions were obviously not related to each other or to any of the biochemical properties. These reactions, possibly of importance as virulence factors, might serve as epidemiological markers.  相似文献

A field experiment is described which evaluates the use of an experimental albendazole pulse release bolus (E-bolus) on gastrointestinal parasitism. The bolus was administered at turnout to 9 first-season grazing calves and 9 animals were kept as controls on a separate pasture. Dry summer observed. The E-bolus introduced at the start of the grazing season provided moderate control of gastrointestinal parasitism. The beneficial effect of the treatment was demonstrated by lower strongyle egg counts and significant differences in ELISA extinctions for Ostertagia, Cooperia and Dictyocaulus. However pepsinogen values were elevated in the bolus-treated group, probably because of the long interval (31 days) between the pulsed treatments. Although not significant there was a trend for the bolus-treated group to gain more weight than the controls.  相似文献

Eighteen field isolates of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae were studied biochemically and serotyped using the complement fixation test (CFT), agglutination test and the immunodiffusion test. Three biochemical tests (V-dependency, CAMP-reaction and urease activity) were found to be very useful for the biochemical characterization of the H. pleuropneumoniae. Haemolysis on blood agar plates, although present, was not sufficiently pronounced in all cases to warrant absolute dependence on this characteristic. Serological typing revealed the isolates belong to Serotypes 1 and 5. The immunodiffusion test proved to be the most serotype specific, while a marked cross-reaction was observed with the CFT.  相似文献

Over a 2-year period involving a total of 168 Angus cows and their calves, 2 studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of once-daily suckling on cow reproduction, calf growth, and gastrointestinal parasitism. Experiment I compared 2 restricted suckling (RS) groups with 1 normal suckling (NS) group. Each group consisted of 24 cows with their calves (24 cows-calves/group = 24 cows and 24 calves/group). In the RS groups, suckling by the calves was restricted to once a day for 45 days, and then the calves were allowed to suckle normally throughout the remainder of the experiment. In the NS group, the calves suckled normally throughout the experiment. Experiment II compared 2 groups of RS cow-calves (24 cow-calves/group) with 2 groups of 24 NS cow-calves/group. In experiment I, there were no differences (P less than 0.05) in pregnancy rate or in the average number of nematode eggs/g of feces (epg) between the cows from the 2 treatment groups. The RS calves consistently had higher epg counts than did the NS calves during the 45 days of RS (169 vs 62 epg, P less than 0.05) and from the time of their return to pasture until weaning (266 vs 186 EPG, P = 0.27). The RS calves also had a higher average coccidia oocyst count during the RS period only. In experiment II, RS cows had a higher pregnancy rate (87.6% vs 66.0%, P less than 0.05) and a shorter postpartum interval (83 vs 101 days, P less than 0.05) than did NS cows.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
